Dishonourable disregard IT TOOK years of negotiations for Somerville to finally getting a new avenue of honour and just minutes of senseless vandalism to tear it down. The vandals struck last Friday night, uprooting trees and pickets planted along Station St less than a month before. Cr Lynn Bowden expressed “disgust and disappointment” and called for witnesses to contact Hastings police. On Saturday, members of Hastings RSL helped Cr Bowden replace the trees that had been in the ground since 16 May. “It was very distressing to find out that a number of the trees and pickets

had been ripped up and strewn around the area,” Cr Bowden said. “Fortunately I was able to get the support of Hastings RSL members who came out early on Saturday morning to help me tidy up and replant the trees. Cr Bowden hoped the culprits would be caught, so that “the significance of the avenue of honour could be explained to them”. “You have to wonder if they even know what the avenue of honour stands for,” Cr Bowden said. “It’s despicable to think someone could vandalise such an important reminder of the sacrifices Australians

made in war to protect the freedom we enjoy today. “If anyone noticed any suspicious activity in the area on Friday night, I would encourage them to contact the Hastings police station.” The original avenue was planted in 1917 and stretched about 600 metres from the roundabouts, past the primary school and down to Alfred St, which runs through to Guelph St. Plane trees were also planted in Station St, on the other side of the railway line. Some still exist. Under each trees was a plaque honouring the 82 Somerville men who served in the First World War.

When Eramosa Rd East was widened and “modernised” for the growing shopping centre in the early 1970s, the Shire of Hastings removed the plaques and chopped down the trees. Cr Bowden said the avenue of honour would start at the corner of Station St and Eramosa Road West, extending along Station St into Jones Rd to the corner of George St.
