Falling tree strikes car A PLANNED mid-afternoon swim to escape Monday’s heat turned into a nightmare for Linda Wilde when her car was hit by a falling tree. “I’m still in shock. I was terrified,” Ms Wilde, of Hastings, said on Tuesday morning. Alone in her 2005 Nissan Pulsar, Ms Wilde was helped from her car by two men and Balnarring Foreshore Parks and Reserves ranger Mark Dunball. The mature banksia had been growing on a nature strip near the milk bar in Balnarring Beach Rd. “I was trying to stop but all I could see were leaves; it made a terrible banging and scraping noise on the roof of my car,” Ms Wilde said. “I couldn’t wait to get out. Something needs to be done. I could have been killed if the tree or its branches had come through the windscreen.” Pictures: Yanni

Siren sounds on Warriors By Mike Hast WESTERNPORT Warriors Football Club has folded after failing to find a welfare agency partner. The Warriors played in Reclink Australia Victorian Football League as a standalone club, but Reclink tightened the rules last year and demanded all 13 clubs find an agency or disband. Club founder Andrew Brady said “despite the club and community’s best efforts, the club was not able to

find a support agency with the football expertise to take on the responsibility of coordinating the team”. “The club has been a fantastic concept for Hastings and one that will be missed,” he said. “The team has motivated many players to find employment, start businesses and, in some cases, even a place to live. “The Warriors have always been a win-win outcome for Hastings and the young men who played in the team.”

The club was started in 2005 by Mr Brady, then a sergeant with Hastings police. It had an immediate impact in the league, losing the grand final by just one point. In 2006, the Warriors won every match and lifted the premiership cup. “The Warriors gave many young men in the Hastings area the opportunity to play football,” Mr Brady said The club helped break down barriers between police and unemployed youth,

“some of whom had been in trouble with the police”. He said playing football “gave people hope, a sense of meaning, new friends and networks, and the opportunity to develop as people”. “It is a credit to the dedication of all those who have been involved at the Warriors that the club has been able to give so much back to the community.” Well-known retired footballers who helped inspire the club included Garry

Wilson, Don Scott and Peter “Spida” Everett. Eight times world kickboxing champion Stan “The Man” Longinidis was a team patron. The Warriors received wide support from the community with two of the biggest sponsors being David Vanderuit of Tall Trees in Balnarring and Mick Loveridge of LW Marine of Hastings. Continued Page 2
