Falling tree strikes car A PLANNED mid-afternoon swim to escape Monday’s heat turned into a nightmare for Linda Wilde when her car was hit by a falling tree. “I’m still in shock. I was terrified,” Ms Wilde, of Hastings, said on Tuesday morning. Alone in her 2005 Nissan Pulsar, Ms Wilde was helped from her car by two men and Balnarring Foreshore Parks and Reserves ranger Mark Dunball. The mature banksia had been growing on a nature strip near the milk bar in Balnarring Beach Rd. “I was trying to stop but all I could see were leaves; it made a terrible banging and scraping noise on the roof of my car,” Ms Wilde said. “I couldn’t wait to get out. Something needs to be done. I could have been killed if the tree or its branches had come through the windscreen.” Pictures: Yanni
Siren sounds on Warriors By Mike Hast WESTERNPORT Warriors Football Club has folded after failing to find a welfare agency partner. The Warriors played in Reclink Australia Victorian Football League as a standalone club, but Reclink tightened the rules last year and demanded all 13 clubs find an agency or disband. Club founder Andrew Brady said “despite the club and community’s best efforts, the club was not able to
find a support agency with the football expertise to take on the responsibility of coordinating the team”. “The club has been a fantastic concept for Hastings and one that will be missed,” he said. “The team has motivated many players to find employment, start businesses and, in some cases, even a place to live. “The Warriors have always been a win-win outcome for Hastings and the young men who played in the team.”
The club was started in 2005 by Mr Brady, then a sergeant with Hastings police. It had an immediate impact in the league, losing the grand final by just one point. In 2006, the Warriors won every match and lifted the premiership cup. “The Warriors gave many young men in the Hastings area the opportunity to play football,” Mr Brady said The club helped break down barriers between police and unemployed youth,
“some of whom had been in trouble with the police”. He said playing football “gave people hope, a sense of meaning, new friends and networks, and the opportunity to develop as people”. “It is a credit to the dedication of all those who have been involved at the Warriors that the club has been able to give so much back to the community.” Well-known retired footballers who helped inspire the club included Garry
Wilson, Don Scott and Peter “Spida” Everett. Eight times world kickboxing champion Stan “The Man” Longinidis was a team patron. The Warriors received wide support from the community with two of the biggest sponsors being David Vanderuit of Tall Trees in Balnarring and Mick Loveridge of LW Marine of Hastings. Continued Page 2

Mr Brady, who left the police force five years ago, said the club had experienced a stellar eight years. “The club was run by volunteers who willingly gave their time to ensure the ongoing viability of the club,” he said. Mr Brady coached and coordinated the team, and his work was rewarded when he was named Mornington Peninsula Shire’s 2008 citizen of the year.

Reclink Australia is a charitable organisation that provides sport and arts activities to help people experiencing disadvantage. Reclink footy had its genesis in 1988 when Peter Cullen of Sacred Heart Mission used recreation as street outreach. Kick to kick sessions became a fourteam league in 1991. Last year, Reclink Victoria state
manager Joe Rotella told The News: “Teams needing an agency is all about creating sustainable programs. “We’re trying to become more professional in the way the league operates. We need to satisfy OH&S requirements.” He said other teams had support from agencies such as the Brotherhood of St Laurence and Odyssey House.

Soft landing for prop-less plane A PILOT who made an emergency landing on tidal mudflats near Tyabb on Friday afternoon crawled out of the mangroves unharmed. The plane was forced down within five minutes of taking off from Tyabb airfield on a flight to Inverloch. In what Peninsula Aero Club president Peter Bernardi described as “a textbook emergency landing”, the single-engine Jabiru 430 was forced down about 6pm after its propeller fell off midflight. “It just skipped to a stop on the mudflats,” Mr Bernardi said. At the controls was a Qantas pilot from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs who did not wish to be identified. He said the landing was “as uneventful as an event like that can be”. “It could have been a lot more dramatic. As long as I was safe, the airplane was a secondary consideration,” he said. The man alighted from his aircraft unscathed and made his way to safety. There were no passengers. Passersby gave the pilot bottles of water to help him cope with the punishing heat until he could be rescued. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority will investigate the incident. Water police later retrieved the propeller from the mudflats. It is understood bolts holding the propeller to the engine showed signs of being sheared off. Hastings police said the pilot of the single-engine Jabiru J430 was forced to land near mangroves about 1.5km southeast of Yaringa Boat Harbour and 4km short of the airfield. The aircraft came to rest on the
Man hurt in bike ‘blue’ A SOMERVILLE man has paid a high price for confronting a group of youths riding trail bikes near his home. The man was rushed to hospital with facial injuries when he was struck in the face with a bottle thrown by one of the youths. Sergeant Rob Chisholm of Hastings police said the group of about 15 young people had fled by the time police arrived at the reserve near the end of Callum Ave on Friday 8 March. He said the injured man had gone to speak with the gang about their rowdy behaviour and riding motorbikes in the reserve when a glass bottle was thrown at him at about 9.30pm. Sergeant Chisholm said that police would increase patrols in the area. “The neighbours are telling us this sort of thing is an ongoing problem,” he said. Anyone with information can contact Constable Scott West at Hastings police on 5970 7800. Jo Winterbottom

mudflats north of the Esso fractionation plant and LPG loading terminal, off Denham Rd, Tyabb. The plane was tied down to prevent it being washed away by the incoming tide and retrieved the following day by a crane on a barge. The airframe was put on a truck at Western Port Marina in Hastings and is now being repaired at Tyabb airfield. Salt water has leaked into the fibre-
glass aircraft, damaging fittings and the engine. Peninsula Aero Club member and DKM Transport operator Mal Mathers transported the plane to Tyabb airfield where it was inspected by insurance assessors. “The plane was not damaged by the crash at all, apart from the propeller crank shaft, which had already broken off,” Mr Mathers said.
Sergeant Rob Chisholm of Hastings police said a police marine unit attended the landing but there were no suspicious circumstances and it was referred to CASA. The pilot said he would reassess plans to sell the plane. It was listed on an internet aircraft trading site in November for $80,000. The advertisement reads, “Engine like new...Nil accidents”. Call to cut shire debt by $30m By Mike Hast THE structure of Mornington Peninsula Shire’s finances and its future direction could be radically changed following Tuesday night’s council meeting. Cr Hugh Fraser, a commercial and property law barrister elected last October to represent the southern peninsula, has issued a challenge to the council and senior shire officers by calling for debt to be cut from almost $48.2 million this year to $20 million by mid-2017. He also has called for: The suspension of planning for the $38 million Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre (SPA) at Rosebud and a report about less expensive options to revitalise Rosebud’s foreshore. A report on the loss-making Pelican Park Recreation Centre in Hastings about whether its operation complies with National Competition Policy and if the shire should be running the pool and ancillary facilities. A plan to speed up building of public toilets, new or renovated sports pavilions, footpaths and traffic management measures. A better way to manage and raise funds for the shire’s superannuation black hole (a $10.8 million liability was revealed last year, part of Victorian councils owing more than $400 million). A better way to manage rising shire employee costs (up 7 per cent a year). The reports would inform the preparation of the shire’s four-year plan currently under preparation. Cr Fraser’s proposal has lit a bonfire
under current shire practices and could usher in a new era of accountability. Before Tuesday’s meeting, he told The News the shire had to “demonstrate a capacity to reduce debt”. “We need more control and better management before we can move forward,” he said. Cr Fraser is arguably the most financially literate councillor the shire has had since councillors were first elected in 1997. He has been practising commercial and property law since 1981, and was elected by the Victorian Bar to the Legal Services Board, which he served from 2007-10. He was a member of its finance and investment committee, which managed $608 million of investments. Cr Fraser says there is no plan “for present and future provision” of the shire’s superannuation liability. He said payments to the state’s local government employee super scheme Vision Super “will continue to be a huge burden” on the shire. Of the $76 million borrowed since 1999, 40 per cent had gone to unfunded employee defined-benefit superannuation. “I have talked to councillors from other councils in my role as the shire’s representative on the Municipal Association of Victoria and many say longterm planning is difficult until the superannuation issue has been resolved,” he said. Last July, The News reported the $10.8 million shortfall was the third call on the Vision Super fund in the past decade, with the shire previously
being asked to pay about $17 million. Cr Fraser said spending on capital works had not increased at the same rate as rates and charges. “Ratepayers have a reasonable expectation that increased rates ought to be reflected in increased capital works.” Rates and charges had risen by an average 8.36 per cent between 2008-
12, but spending on capital works had only risen by an average 4.15 per cent. “This council ought not to accept the view expressed in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 annual reports that ‘financial performance is not council’s primary objective’,” he said. The council had a continuing obligation to maintain essential services; “contain the unreasonable increases
in rates and charges collected from ratepayers”; accelerate reduction of debt; and accelerate long-term capital programs for public toilets, footpaths, sports pavilions, streetscapes, public parks, traffic management and other capital works before “embarking on a new, controversial, costly and risky ... Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre”.
Where your millions went HUGH Fraser has analysed shire annual reports from 2008-09 to 2011-12; the shire’s borrowing history between 1999 and June 2012; anticipated borrowings to July 2013; and the history, location and rising cost of the proposed Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre. “Council’s debt and liability position has deteriorated over the past four years,” he states in his report presented to the council on Tuesday night. “Total liabilities of $45.412 million at 30 June 2008 have increased to $48.198 million at 30 June 2012.” This included the $10.8 million superannuation black hole, which had to be paid by July. The deterioration had occurred despite a substantial increase in rates and charges by an average 8.36 per cent a year from $83.6 million in 2007-08 to $115.3 million in 2011-12. The cost of borrowings had averaged almost $2.8 million a year and there had been new borrowings of $6 million over the same period. Between 1999 and 1 July 2013, the shire had borrowed $76 million and repaid almost $28 million.

Woman ‘critical’ after hit by car By Jo Winterbottom A BAXTER woman remains in a critical condition after being hit by a car on Sunday. Police have released few details about the incident that occurred on Sunday evening, but yesterday confirmed that the woman was not crossing the road at the time she was hit. A police statement issued on Monday said a silver Ford utility was travelling east along Baxter-Tooradin Rd when it hit the woman just before 6.30pm. The 52-year-old woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken
to The Alfred hospital, which yesterday described her condition as “critical but stable”. Police yesterday said they would wait to interview the woman before releasing further details about the crash. The driver, a 48-year-old Baxter man, was “assisting police with their enquiries”. Police from Hastings highway patrol unit attended the crash and the investigation has been taken over by detectives from Hastings and the major collisions unit. They appealed for witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au

At the screening were Yassah Zarwue, Petronia Nzirubusa, Lilliana Garcia, Alia Sultana, Luz Restrepo, Anna Penna (with one-year-old Joseph), Zakia Baigi Hazaya, Maria Barumbanze and Dana Bevilacqua. The women will be in Frankston on Saturday as part of the Ventana street festival. Women from the group will join the parade and then sell their products. Picture: Yanni
MORNINGON Peninsula Shire councillor David Gibb wants to attend a company directors course being run by the Municipal Association of Victoria. The six-week $7000 course is being run by the MAV in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Councillors are allocated $4000 a year to attend conferences and seminars and Cr Gibb has spent $357 of the $16,000-a-term allocation. Council must approve any amount over $1500 being spent by a councillor and Cr Gibb was hoping that his request to undertake the course would be
backed by his colleagues at last night’s (Tuesday) meeting. The company directors course has 10 modules, including the role of the board and directors and practices in contemporary governance; key responsibilities of directors in private, public and not-for-profit organisations; a board’s role in developing a risk culture appropriate to the business and overseeing risk management to ensure improved performance; key financial statements from a director’s perspective; legal and compliance obligations; and decision-making.

Hot long weekend brings Link delays By Mike Hast MOTORISTS returning to Melbourne on Peninsula Link experienced delays over the Labour Day long weekend. The continuing heatwave saw tens of thousands of Melburnians head south to Mornington Peninsula beaches to escape high temperatures but getting home was easier said than done with stop-start traffic testing the patience of day-trippers and weekenders. The worst congestion was at Frankston on the north-bound off-ramp leading to EastLink tollway where two
lanes becomes one. On Sunday afternoon and evening, traffic at times was at a standstill as far south as Moorooduc, 12km from the Frankston exit to EastLink. One driver messaged The News from Moorooduc: “Stuck in a car park not a freeway; what a joke.” Delays were similar or worse on Monday evening as families headed home after the hot long weekend. Several motorists who contacted The News criticised the Peninsula Link–EastLink interchange, saying the off-ramp
and on-ramp should have two lanes. Even motorists heading south on Sunday morning said traffic speeds dropped to below 80km/h in several places due to the high number of cars on the 27km freeway, which opened on 18 January with much fanfare. Similar complaints were received on Monday 28 January as travellers returned to Melbourne after the Australia Day long weekend. Meanwhile, the testing of six speed cameras on Peninsula Link has not yet been completed.
The cameras were installed in late January at the Loders Rd flyover, the Eramosa Rd West flyover and the Mornington-Tyabb Rd off-ramps. It was reported the cameras could not be installed before the freeway opened in January due to the road builder restricting access. A Department of Justice spokesman said an announcement about the switch-on date would come later in the year and drivers would be given notice via roadside signs indicating when enforcement would begin.
Police would continue to patrol the freeway to catch speeding drivers. Peninsula Link has nine grade separated interchanges connecting 11 existing roads including three freeway-tofreeway connections. Its construction involved 45 separate bridge structures, three million cubic metres of earthworks, 380,000 tonnes of asphalt and the planting of 1.5 million trees and plants. The project includes a 25-kilometre walking and cycling trail.
Baxter tourism rail line closer to reality
Morning magic: Balnarring Beach’s dolphins and their interactions with people and horses are inspirational to Mornington Peninsula artist Vicki Sullivan. Thursday dawned with a clear sky and warm glow as Sullivan walked the beach, taking pictures of swimming horses that she would later interpret in oils on canvas. The “magical” bonus came when the dolphins joined the parade. “There was just one dolphin who seemed to love the horses and swam up and down beside them,” she said. “Some of the horses walked through the water and some had a canter along the beach. Magical.”
THE building of Peninsula Link freeway was a boon for Mornington Railway Preservation Society. Department of Transport officials requested the freeway builder construct a bridge to carry the freeway over the disused section of rail line between Moorooduc and Baxter. About 250 metres of track was repaired by Abigroup after the bridge was built. Concrete sleeper were used. The society’s long-term aim is to use the 5.2-kilometre Baxter section to run trollies for tourist. Members have been clearing vegetation on and beside the track, and the society has bought timber sleepers from Western Australia. Ultimately it would like to have a
second line behind Baxter station so its trollies could run when Frankston to Stony Point line passenger trains were operating. It also would like to access the main line at Baxter, enabling heritage trains to run to Frankston and beyond. VicRoads is currently installing traffic lights at the intersection of Moorooduc Highway and Eramosa Rd West for the shared walking and cycling trail. Malcolm Swaine of the society said it was not impossible to imagine steam trains running from Baxter station to Yuilles Rd, Mornington, crossing Moorooduc Highway where the lights are being installed. Shire seeks ‘insight’ ABOUT 400 residents and ratepayers of Mornington Peninsula Shire will decide the council’s rating at the annual community satisfaction survey. People will be selected randomly for the telephone survey, which will yield results at the end of the year. Last year’s results have just been made public with the shire scoring an approval rating of 60, the state average. Frankston Council scored 62 and top of the table was 71 for Monash Council in the southeastern suburbs around Glen Waverley area. One of the peninsula’s three state MPs, David Morris, a councillor and shire president of the former Shire of Mornington, said the Local Government Services Report “provides valuable insight as to how well residents believe the shire is performing”.

“This is a good opportunity for people to make their views known on four main areas: council’s overall performance, community consultation, advocacy, and customer service,” he said. “It’s important that councils have this data to make any necessary improvements.” Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said last year’s survey showed nine per cent of respondents rated their councils as very good, 40 per cent as good and 36 per cent as average. Nine per cent rated their councils as poor, four per cent as very poor and one per cent had no opinion. Ms Powell said rate increases remained a community concern. Regroup at the army camp THE Army Apprentice Association Australia is calling on all former associates of Balcombe Barracks in Mt Martha to attend a reunion marking the military and historic role of the barracks. “The reunion will involve a welcome and registration night on Friday, an unveiling of historical interpretive signs installed by Mornington Peninsula Shire at Balcombe Grammar School on Saturday followed by the formal reunion dinner at Mornington Racecourse, and a commemorative march and service at the war memorial in Mornington,” said Major (ret) Frank Maloney, Balcombe commemoration manager for the Army Apprentice Association. The commemoration is open to all units and personnel who served at the barracks: Apprentices, Signals, Survey, Music, US Marines, WRAAC and civilian staff. “We hope the activities will attract many old
boys and girls of Balcombe and we’ll have opportunities throughout the weekend for the community to get involved as well,” Major Maloney said. Balcombe was a base for military personnel and units throughout Second World War and was used as a base for the Army Apprentice School, School of Signals, School of Military Survey and School of Music after 1945. The barracks closed in 1983 and much of the land sold for private homes. Register for the weekend at: www.austarmy apprentice.org or call Frank Maloney on 0418 728 181, email frmal@bigpond.com The public is invited to the unveiling of a Balcombe Barracks sign at Balcombe Grammar School at 2pm on Saturday 4 May and to attend the march and service from 9am on Sunday 5 May at Memorial Park, Barkly St, Mornington.

A village lifestyle VILLAS at Mountain View, a lifestyle village in Leongatha, are available from $139,500. “Display homes are open to inspect, the weather is amazing and the location is incredible. There are different times and seasons in life and each season requires a fresh look at plans, and a way to enjoy the coming seasons of life,” Trevor Davis of Mountain View said. “Mountain View Leongatha provides the opportunity to embrace a lifestyle with fresh purpose with the opportunity to buy into a purposeful and exciting future. “The first stage of the Mountain View lifestyle village is creating incredible interest with expressions of interest and sales being made. “Prices for the first stage have been set to encourage early buying with some villas available for immediate occupancy. “The site provides ‘wide open’ views across the township, the dairy and the countryside, which all add to the relaxed environment. “The heated pool is great for swimming,
relaxing and doing exercises with high pressure water jet creating pressure for water aerobics. The bowling green provides a relaxed setting for casual bowls or for competition with friends, family or club. “The community centre is a great asset for the village and is used for dining, lounging about, celebrations, movie screenings, weekly gettogethers, art and crafts or discussion groups. A ‘flexi’ room is included for other activities. “There are only 45 villas in this boutique village. No crowding or large numbers of residence competing for the same facilities. What a dream. “There are two financing options available for buying into this amazing lifestyle village in a sought-after Gippsland location.” Inspection is by appointment. Call Trevor Davis on 1300 306 255 to arrange an early viewing to plan for a timely transition into ‘purposeful living’. www.mountainviewleongatha.com.au

Expert help for painful feet and legs They’re at the end of our bodies and often at the bottom of our priorities. But whilst most of the time we don’t give our feet a second thought, when something goes wrong with them it can be debilitating. Our feet are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most of our physical activity, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common. What many people aren’t aware of is that our feet can affect and cause problems in the rest of our bodies including; ankles, knees, hips, backs and necks. Bad foot posture can continually pull our bodies out of alignment, so any foot or leg pain should not be ignored. Problems left untreated almost always get worse but there is often a simple solution, if you get the right advice and treatment. A sports podiatrist who has expertise in musculoskeletal issues and biomechanics is the best person to help with any foot and leg pain or discomfort. Dr. Paul Dowie, one of Australia’s foremost Sports Podiatrists and founder of Foot + Leg Pain Clinics says, “People often endure painful conditions for far too long. They assume nothing
can be done, but in fact most conditions are extremely treatable. Even patients that have been told, there is no solution or that surgery is their only option, we are treating with great success. Recent medical advances are enabling us to treat most foot and leg problems quickly, easily and effectively.“ Foot + Leg Pain Clinics keep up-to-date with the latest in medical research and treatments and take a personal and holistic approach to ensure patients get results. Dr. Dowie explains, “I know from personal experience what it’s like to suffer from foot and leg pain but you don’t have to put up with it, you just need the right diagnosis, treatment and advice from a practitioner that treats the cause not just the symptoms. That’s where we can help.” If you’re suffering any foot or leg discomfort, bunions, heel pain, injuries or adolescent growing pains call Foot + Leg Pain Clinics. Clinics are located across Melbourne including Mt Eliza and Berwick. Get $50 off initial consultations when you mention this offer. Call 1300 328 300

HISTORY
A dangerous intersection By Ilma Hackett IN the 1920s, the general store at Balnarring at the junction of BalnarringMornington Rd and the Hastings-Flinders Rd was called the Six Ways Store and operated by Ern and Annie Stone. The railway line to Red Hill passed not far from the Stone’s Store Corner and there was great concern about the dangerous intersection. Records show Balnarring Progress Association pushed to have something done to improve the safety of the intersection. In August 1932 a letter was written to the council pointing out the dangerous state of the sixways crossing at Stone’s Store. By the time of the association’s next meeting, a reply stated that the Country Roads Board had been approached to provide funds for alteration and improvement of the dangerous corner but the board considered other works more necessary. The association was incensed by the attitude taken by the board “as there is a great number of men at present unemployed and in need of work in this district, we can see no excuse why there should be any further delay. The response led to a series of letters written to different authorities by the association’s secretary, Mr J Cavanagh. A letter was sent to the National Safety Council and another to the Peninsula Developmental League, seeking to affiliate with it and use its support to have immediate action taken before the traffic
reached its seasonal peak. A letter was also sent to Mr Kirton, MLA for Mornington. 17 September 1932 The Secretary, The National Safety Council, Melbourne. Dear Sir, We take this opportunity to bring to the notice of Your Council the fact that a dangerous crossing at Balnarring, known as Stone’s Corner, exists without any warning signals to road traffic. At this corner the following roads meet:The main Flinders Road Balnarring Mornington Road Stumpy Gully Road Railway Crossing leading to Balnarring Beach Road, and Palm Beach Road Although the Railways traffic is light, Motor traffic is considerable, especially at weekends and holiday periods, and, as an additional element of danger, the Flinders Road takes a sharp bend at this corner and the road is narrow. If your Council could see its way to provide the necessary warning signs such help would be greatly appreciated by the district. Suitable signs for the approaches to the Balnarring State School, which is on the Mornington Road, would be appreciated also. Yours faithfully, Hon. Secretary
In the letter to Mr Kirton, the secretary of the progress association stated: “The tourist season will now shortly be upon us and the usual summer congestion of traffic will be felt not only at Balnarring, but further afield down the Flinders Road to Flinders itself. While we hope that larger number of cars than ever will pass through Balnarring to the benefit of Peninsula holiday resorts we do not want to feel that the good advertisement of Peninsula scenery may be marred by the bad advertisement of Peninsula neglect. Shire of Flinders offered its continued
support to expedite a decision; the National Safety Council promised to follow up the issue at the next meeting of its traffic committee; the Peninsula Development League assured its support on the matter. Mr Kirton promised to ask that the state of the intersection be deemed an urgent matter by the Country Roads Board. A letter written to Mr Kirton from the Country Roads Board informed him than an inspection of the crossing would be made by one of the board’s engineers. Presumably work was carried out. No
further mention of the crossing is made in the minutes book covering that period. The Six Ways Corner still presents similar summer congestion 80 years on, although there is no longer a railway crossing to add to the danger. ď Ž Ilma Hackett is the research and information officer at Balnarring and District Historical Society, which can be contacted on 5983 5326 or via email balhist@optusnet.com.au The society’s history room at the Balnarring Hall is open most Monday mornings from 10am-midday.
Dangerous crossing: The intersection as seen from Stone’s Store, circa 1922. Over the following decades the amount of traffic rose rapidly and the intersection is again being considered for major work.

Wind, rain and flood: why I love Easter By Stuart McCullough FOR me, Easter means one thing – wet camping. While Christmas is a season promoting goodwill and charity to others, Easter is all about a grim determination to make the absolute most of a couple of public holidays and a commitment to the family camping equipment, come hell or high water. While “hell or high water” is often just a turn of phrase, when it comes to Easter it is a simple statement of fact. Tired of renting onsite vans that housed a multitude of arachnids, our family bought a campervan. The genius of a campervan is that it collapses to a more manageable size for towing. In its compact form, it resembles one of those mini-caravans used for transporting greyhounds. But on arriving at your destination, it transforms into something that looks like the love child of a site office and a circus tent. But whether collapsed or expanded, it’s difficult to fit five children and a couple of parents into a campervan, so we also had an annex. The annex hooked onto the side of the campervan like a leech. It was here that my brother Cam and I were sent. Uniquely, the annex failed to keep the cold out, while simultaneously trapping the heat. When the temperature plummeted, it was not uncommon to wake up with an icicle hanging from the end of your nose. When the mercury soared, the annex acted not only as a shelter but also as an alternative oven, able to bake a loaf of bread or slow roast a chicken. Cam and I had bunks. Even though this was the pre-IKEA age – when the
very suggestion that you should assemble a piece of furniture was greeted as if it was a declaration of madness – camping furniture was an exception. Whether it was because space was at a premium or, rather, that the very act of assembly was returning you to your primal outdoor roots is debatable. What was crystal clear is that the need to construct anything – no matter how
basic – left me at a distinct disadvantage. Luckily, I had a younger brother who had a blackbelt in Lego construction and could assemble the bunks with his eyes closed. In retrospect, I suspect he assembled our beds this way to make me feel more incompetent than I already did. If, indeed, that was possible.
Worse still, he would show off by making the metal equivalent of balloon animals out of the steel framing before finally revealing a bunk. Eventually he would make quite a production out of it, even wearing a cape and declaring “abracadabra” before unveiling the assembled bunks. Back then, you needed very little to face the world and all its challenges. One of the key pieces of equipment to get through life was, without doubt, a good quality sleeping bag. These items always came with a promise that they could guarantee a comfortable night’s sleep in even cold conditions. This, of course, ignored the fact that, when camping, there is no such thing as a comfortable night’s sleep. But despite this, it was always reassuring to know that your sleeping bag could withstand freezing temperatures, even if you couldn’t. We were determined to make the most of Easter, even when the weather was against us. Perhaps in defiance of the elements, we chose to camp at Glen Cromie in Gippsland. Apparently, the northern Indian village of Mawsynram holds the world record as the wettest place on earth. Clearly, the record-keepers have never been to Glen Cromie, where rain always seemed to be the default weather. This made setting up a challenge. Expanding the campervan and assembling the annex was difficult at the best of times. Add persistent sleet and you have an experience about as pleasant as being water-boarded. Trapped in a confined space for days on end, we would pass the time with gentle pur-
suits such as snap, backgammon and whining. Of course, one of the things about being away for Easter was the fear that the Easter Bunny may not be able to locate us in order to deliver the awesome payload of chocolate we believed was our rightful due. Despite my pleas, my parents didn’t leave so much as a note back at our house. We never put Father Christmas through the wringer like this. It seemed to be tempting fate. Despite my concerns, on Easter Sunday we would awake – icicles on our noses – and find the Easter Bunny had come good. This extraordinary attention to detail would, nowadays, be most likely regarded as stalking. Indeed, when I think about it, the only way the Easter Bunny could know our location was if he followed us. Like Max Cady in the movie Cape Fear, I imagined the Easter Bunny attaching himself to the underside of the family Tarago as we travelled from Tyabb to Glen Cromie, all the while waiting for his chance to strike. Perhaps it was all the time in the annex that caused my imagination to run riot. As the wind and rain held us hostage, discussions would soon begin between my parents as to whether we should head home early. It was always something of a relief when we were given the order to dismantle the bunks. Without fail, as we pulled out of the camping ground, the first fingers of sunshine would begin to claw at the sodden earth. Proof, if it was needed, that our Easter was at an end. www.stuartmccullough.com

THE Mornington Peninsula is an exciting place in summer and early autumn with many festivals and concerts including Peninsula Summer Music Festival, Red Hill Country Music Festival, RAW Family Music Festival, Rosebud Kite Festival, Ventana Fiesta and more. It was disappointing for me as a local radio journalist and music writer to not be given access to the Between the Bays Festival to review and catch up with friend Troy CassarDaley. There are moves on for a new music festival on the peninsula in 2014 with a focus on local talent. More news on this in the coming weeks. Now in its seventh year, the Ventana Fiesta promises another colourful burst of Latin American, Portuguese and Spanish cultures during March. Music, food, art, craft and more as you enjoy the Latino culture and experience that is Ventana. More info www.thefac.com.au *** MORNING Star Estate is going through some major changes in 2013. The estate where Judy Barrett planted more than 75,000 roses of more than 600 varieties in what were once paddocks overlooking Port Phillip has become the peninsula’s premier restaurant and function venues. Set amid 22 acres of exquisite gardens and 30 acres of vines, the 19th century mansion Morning Star has panoramic views of Port Philip stretching from the Bellarine Peninsula to Melbourne. More news to come on music concerts, new dining packages and a website. www.visitmorningtonpeninsula.org *** ERIC Clapton gave up his career as a designer of stained glass windows to concentrate on blues guitar. His first breakthrough came in 1963 when he joined the Yardbirds. It was short-lived and he left the band the following year to be replaced by Jeff Beck. He went on to play with John Mayall and before long Eric’s flashy guitar playing gained him cult status in the UK. Eric then teamed up with Peter (Ginger) Baker and his best friend Scotsman Jack Bruce to form Cream with the help of Robert Stigwood and released the hits White Room, Badge, Layla, Sunshine of Your Love, Strange Brew, Crossroads and I Feel Free.
On the heels of a sold-out Crossroads Guitar Festival and the announcement of a major world tour, Eric Clapton releases his 21st studio album Old Sock (Universal) his first album since 2010. The album, produced by Clapton and friends features two new original songs, Every Little Thing and Gotta Get Over. The album is a collection of some of Clapton’s favourite songs spanning from his childhood to the present day that highlights his vast appreciation and knowledge of music. Clapton has always had a remarkable ability to recognise great songs and a gift for knowing how to uniquely interpret them, as he does on Old Sock. The album explores romantic standards of the 30s, reggae, soul, rock, and includes a stand-out playful collaboration with Paul McCartney, to create an experience that is quintessential Clapton. Clapton assembled a band for the recordings consisting of long-time collaborators Steve Gadd (drums), Willie Weeks (bass) and Chris Stainton (keyboards) along with some surprise guest additions. JJ Cale joins the song Angel for backing vocals and guitar, Chaka Khan joins as backing vocalist for Get on Over, Steve Winwood on the Hammond B3 Organ on Still Got the Blues, Paul McCartney on bass/vocals on All of M, Jim Keltner on drums for Our Love is here to Stay. Old Sock is out 15 March. *** SHOCK has released the ground-breaking documentary series AFP: Australian Federal Police on a two-DVD set taking you behind the scenes with the men and women of Australia’s AFP. The documentary was produced over more than two years and filmed in more than eight countries including Colombia, Russia and the Philippines. Running time is 227 minutes and in widescreen. www.shockdvd.com.au *** SOME great new CDs released this month include a special three-CD set Songman (Festival) from the late Jimmy Little featuring remastered and previously unreleased tracks and a bonus never-before-heard concert recording at the Sydney Opera House in 2001. It features Royal Telephone, Stand by Me, Cattle and Cane, Under the Milky Way and Black Fella/White Fella. Tim McGraw releases Two Lanes of

Songs include Spicks and Specks, Wine and Women, Cherry Red, Big Chance and more. *** AS Victorians eagerly await the Melbourne premiere season of the international awardwinning Broadway and West End hit Legally Blonde the Musical , the producers have announced an exciting hometown return of a beloved local lad. SEBASTIAN called in to get advice for what is becoming a popular trend– the use of hyphenated names when people marry or cohabit and produce offspring. Sebastian has a hyphenated surname and is very worried because his eldest son Hubert is getting married. Sebastian’s surname is Ivor-Gottar. Once upon a time, just to make things easier for everyone, when people married, the wife would take the husband’s surname, relinquishing her maiden name. This made it easy for departments of births, deaths and marriages all over the world. I think the aristocracy in England started the craze of hyphenated names so the family silverware would be passed on to the rightful heirs. They also suffered the delusion that a hyphenated name sounded more important. I think the only people they were fooling were themselves. There are other names for them, but this is a family newspaper. Some of the hyphenated surnames have to be seen to be believed. Names like Foote-Smelle, Parson-Wind, Argus-Tuft, Dogge-Barken, Eize-Water, and the stupidity of Smith-Smith are among the many noted. Hubert’s fiancee Kayla is a “modern woman”, a feminist and a member of Emily’s List (look it up on the internet). She wants to retain her surname so she does not have to defer to her husband as she is equal in every way. Hence a hyphenated surname is her answer. She is not worried about later generations or that all the bureaucratic forms will need half a page for the surname alone. One thing for sure is her adamant decision to call her first-born son John, a family tradition. Tradition is important to Kayla. Hubert has no choice but to go along with this. Kayla’s surname is Cilli-Naim. Hence their son will be known as John Ivor-GottarCilli-Naim. Sebastian is beside himself (and me at the moment). Poppy’s solution I don’t want to upset the two feminists who read this column, but Blind Freddy can see that by breaking with, dare I say it, “patriarchal tradition”, this whole hyphenating of surnames will become a nightmare. If something isn’t broken, don’t fix it, I say. I got a stubby for Sebastian and myself, then told him the only solution I could see was for him to buy a boat, go fishing and try to put this out of his mind. I did sort of suggest Hubert might be “spirited away” on the day of the wedding as another solution, but left that up to him. Sebastian left muttering about Haines Hunter boats, outboard motors, changing names by deed poll, kidnapping techniques and the need to restock his bar fridge.
A Grain of Salt IT’S the heatwave. My brain was frazzled, the threads barely visible. Try Cliffie. Write anything ...“Knowledge brings power to people!” Where do we acquire this knowledge; Mount Sinai? Innovative ways of involving different sections of the community in matters of obesity? Psychological reasons for implementing programs in the workplace? Can it work, impact? Healthy dads and mums, healthy kids, the importance of living together as a family, eat together. A meaningful conversation between parents and children (USA study) works out at 3.5 minutes a week. Enthusiastic PT teachers, workplace power, a blokey program; evidence based. Information sessions, DVD presentations. It’s all about equality of life; a new language. Listen up! Vague but it’s the best I can manage. *** FOLLOWING on, the NHMRC (these names? National Health Medical Research Council; read “control freaks”) official new dietary guidelines for the evening meal suggest up to 100 grams of fish (don’t drop it or you’ll never find it) rice and a small boiled potato with a glass of water. And that’s for men! For the lovelies it’s a cup of pasta, small beef mince, kidney beans and half an onion; resulting in a race of healthy skeletons. If anyone out there is forced to try this (by a hoodwinked partner or parent) I suggest an unob-
PAGE 36
trusive visit to your local pie shop. Skip the sauce; it smells. *** ON the internet: Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what is known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. See? It’s not us, it’s the bloody doors. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale. Phew. *** DERRYN Hinch: “With my new found health I want to spend my remaining years focussing on my career.” Derryn mate, devote what remains to obscurity. Renounce all concern for name and glory. Among other gratifications give up the one which comes from other people’s approval. It’s a waste of your now valuable time. Try Chelsea, or New Zealand. *** TEDDDY knocks off $600 million from the health budget then screams because Julia did likewise with $107 million; Julia pays up but Health Minister David Davis still screams fowl. As a not so avid listener of numerous hospital stories at my local RSL I’m intrigued by the permanency of complaints. My personal experiences oppose these views. Rosebud and Frankston hospitals (including one overnight in a passageway) have al-
Western Port News 12 March 2013
ways been friendly, professional and downright nice. We are lucky with our terrific hospital system, in spite of politicians. *** I COULD never warm to Wayne Swann, his skill at sticking with the strength outweighing his knowledge of the multiplication tables. His words about Julia on television “many would agree is the toughest warrior for Labor values in our history?” His shadow, if Joe Hockey could ever be described as such, is surely his equal, either rubbishing something outright and misleading the voters or claiming it as his idea in the first place; a mind change on the flip of a threepenny bit. Both without courage and much bluster and both appear to hide an inferiority complex suggesting (to me at least) they could well be a threat to the public interest. Surplus, surplus and nothing else. Well, not for Wayne anymore; a false figure anyway, a doctored bottom line. A decent-size deficit would surely get things up and running again. Most of the good things done in Victoria were built on deficits. No real damage for now I suppose, both being such glorified “yes” men. *** ON the surface it appears Ben Zygler, with his dual citizenship, was an Israeli secret service spy (as in spying on us) but decided on a bit each way with ASIO. Then Moses (the Mount Sinai lawgiver) found out and into prison
and eventual (suspicious) suicide. No surprises there. The Israelis, like the Board of Control for Cricket in India with ABC commentator Jim Maxwell, are a law unto themselves. Bob Carr and Stephen Smith’s comments suggest it will all blow over. Kevvy Rudd had a go at forged passports by Israel some years back, howled down by many. How is Julian Assange travelling Bob? Check both matters out with Barack O before you answer. *** “SINCE [narcissists] deep down feel themselves to be faultless, it is inevitable that when they are in conflict with the world they will invariably perceive the conflict as the world’s fault. Since they must deny their own badness, they must perceive others as bad. They project their own evil onto the world. They never think of themselves as evil, on the other hand, they consequently see much evil in others.” (M. Scott Peck). I immediately think of the AFL, a giant money ship full of leaks and super self- important people supposedly of substance and Matt Rendell and the Melbourne Football Club and no Tassie team and money, lots of money. Why is that? Does money corrupt? Nah, well, only if it’s coming your way. Oh, and Mossad. *** According to Pope Benedict XV1 God told him to devote himself to quiet contemplation; me too ... I’m all for

formula feeding babies; allows me to get a good night’s sleep ... If Peter Ryan wants interlock devices for .05 I’m against it; dictatorial fascism … White night in Melbourne; bugger, I missed it ... A $500,000 fine for the Melbourne Football Club; surely a book figure ... Jeffrey Kennett says the good story of Teddy’s Liberals is not being communicated. I’m all ears Jeffrey, leaving aside teachers, TAFE and massive cuts to Peninsula Health ... By day five of the heatwave I was ready for the coffin; makes you realise how courageous our fire fighters are ... Bee Gees Barry Gibb reflecting on the passing of another brother “There are a lot of things I didn’t see before. I don’t know why but I’m seeing them now.” Too true Barry...Who is Ringo Starr? Hooroo. cliffie9@bigpond.com

It’s Old Boys v Sorrento grand final PROVINCIAL By IT Gully PENINSULA Old Boys will tackle Sorrento in the MPCA Provincial grand final this weekend. The Sharks were runners-up to Baxter last season and the Old Boys were champions in 2010-11. While Sorrento enjoyed a comfortable victory against Mornington, POB played a thriller against old foe Baxter. The sides have had some ding-dong battles over the years and Saturday and Sunday of last week was no different. Baxter came into the semi with the better form. On their day, Peninsula Old Boys are powerful and couldn’t be discounted. The Old Boys won the toss at Baxter Park and chose to bat. Dale Irving and Adrian Mack took the new ball for Baxter and struck early, dismissing both openers before the score had reached 30.
The dangerous Dylan O’Malley was run out, and Brandon Lawler was caught by Travis Sawers off the bowling of Mack for 6. Eivion Bowen batted at three and helped to get things back on track with 33. Wade Pelzer helped to get the score near 100 with a well-timed team-high score of 49. Jonny Forrest has been in sensational form for the Old Boys and scored a useful 25. The Old Boys needed the tail to wag but unfortunately it was limp with the last five wickets falling for just 46 runs. Marc Uccello was the chief wickettaker for Baxter with 3/28, while Sam Wolsgrove claimed 2/26 and Adrian Mack snared 2/36. Against Baxter, 176 didn’t look sufficient from the Old Boys. Baxter opener Shane McComb blasted a quickfire 39 and Daniel Warwick hit 37 to have the home side cruising.
When Ben Matters went for just 6, Baxter was 3/73 and the match appeared to be evenly balanced, but it went pear-shaped for the home side. Dale Irving offered some resistance with 42, but the wickets kept tumbling. After bowling POB out in the 72nd over, Baxter had 78 overs to get the required runs. Adrian Mack went for a duck when the score was on 158 and Marc Uccello (14) went without the team adding to the score. Number 11 Sam Wolsgrove joined Daniel Lanati at the crease with 19 runs to win and no wickets in hand. Lanati hit his way to 14 and Wolsgrove hit 4 to get Baxter to within one run of a draw and two runs of a win. But Dylan O’Malley, the man who dismissed Irving, claimed Lanati also in the 73rd over to give his side a famous victory. Zac Fillipone was the best of the
Peninsula Old Boys bowlers with 4/63. At the other end of the peninsula at Sorrento, it wasn’t quite as exciting at David MacFarlan Reserve in the Sorrento versus Mornington semi. The Sharks batted first after winning the toss and made 210 in 74.1 overs. Liam O’Connor batting at three made 38, but it was 41 from the number eight, veteran campaigner Nick Davern, that set up the win. The last four wickets yielded 85 runs. At one stage the Sharks were 6-125 but finished on 210. The Doggies used eight bowlers, the best being Luke Popov with 4-33. In reply, the visitors looked great at 4/153 after Matt Foon (37), Jack Haseltine (43) and Popov (24) took control but Sharks’ bowler Anthony Blackwell then ripped the game apart. He finished with figures of 6/28, taking five of the last six wickets. The Doggies lost 5/13 to be all out
for 166 in the 65th over. When the grand finalists last met Sorrento hosted Peninsula Old Boys in round five this season, in November last year. Sorrento won the toss, batted first and Nick Jewell put on a show. The former state player played a number of big innings at the start of the season but has been far less dominant since Christmas. The Sharks put on a massive 8/326 with Blackwell scoring 61 to be the second-highest scorer after Jewell. Jon Forrest and Glenn Prendergast each claimed two wickets. In reply, POB was not discgraced, bowled out for 234 in 68 overs. Eivion Bowen top-scored with 46, Prendergast got 40 and Lawler 37. A J King claim d 3/74 for the Sharks and Blackwell picked up two wickets.
Langy, Somie through to ‘big show’ DISTRICT By IT Gully LANGWARRIN will play Somerville in its third grand final in as many seasons after thrashing Baden Powell in the MPCA District semi-final. Somerville also had an easy path to the grand final with a convincing win over Carrum. Langwarrin won the toss and decided to bat against Baden Powell, a side it thrashed in the home and away season at Lloyd Park. Openers Simon McEvoy (35) and Mark Cooper (43) got the team off to a good start with an opening stand of 52. Danny Weare then made 46 batting at four and Andy Johnston came in at five and smacked six 4s and two 6s on his way to 87. Mal Coutts was a handy player to come in at nine and worked the ball around for 20 to get his side to 8/273 in its 75 overs. Rhys Elmi, Nathan Rice and Julian Pharaoh picked up two wickets each for the Braves. In reply, the visitors were never in the hunt. Captain Mal Coutts opened the bowling with off-spinner Dwayne Doig. Doig finished with 5/56 from 23.5 overs, while leggie Ben Wells chimed

in with 3/9 from seven overs. Elmi top-scored with 26, Adam Landry made 25 and only one other Baden Powell batsman in Pharaoh (11) scored double figures.
The visitors were rolled for 105, with the innings including two runouts. In the other semi-final, Carrum was bowled out for 143 by Somerville in the final over of its innings.
Opener Matt Donegan top-scored for the Lions with 46, while Shaun Foster was next best with 37. Russell Wilkes was on fire for the Eagles opening the bowling and send-
ing down 32 overs. He finished with 4/46. Aaron Kaddatz bowled 18.3 overs and took 3/29. Jack Kennedy helped himself to 2/23 from eight overs. In reply, the Eagles were never in trouble, despite losing six wickets on the way to the win. Somerville finished at 6/144 off 46.4 overs. Ben Delaney top-scored with 48 and his brother Sam hit 23. Dean Polson with 2/34 was the only multiple wicket-taker for the Lions. When the grand finalists last met Somerville hosted Langwarrin at Somerville Reserve in round five starting on 24 November. The Eagles won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 216 in 70 overs. Keith Burdett opened with 66, Sam Delaney scored 40 and Brenton Alp 32. Doig was the chief wicket-taker with 4/39 off 29 overs for the Kangas, while Mal Coutts snared 3/48 from 12 overs. In reply, Langwarrin scored 7/268 before bringing its innings to a close with eight overs to spare. Andy Johnson scored 94, David Ross got a half century and Jarryd Amalfi 53. Kaddatz was the chief wicket-taker for the Eagles with 3/52 off 20 overs, while Wilkes claimed 2/43 from 14.
Red Hill, Seaford into final after shock wins SUB-DISTRICT By IT Gully SEAFORD Tigers and Red Hill will meet in the MPCA Sub-district grand final after shock wins in their semifinals on the weekend. Balnarring and Rosebud came into the semis as raging hot favourites after strong performances during the season. However, while Balnarring has been in top form since Christmas, Rosebud limped into the finals but the quality on the list was expected to ensure it got to the grand final. It wasn’t to be, Red Hill getting the job done against the Buds to make yet another grand final.
The Hillmen were beaten by Pines last season in the big show. This year, they have a slightly easier task in Seaford Tigers. Seaford almost beaten in a reverse outright against Balnarring. After the home side was dismissed for 108 in 40 overs, the Tigers then made 187 in 45 overs. There were still 65 overs left in the match after both teams batted. The star in the first innings for the Tigers was Corey Hand who snared 6/18 off 16 overs. Tyler Wilton has bowled just 72 overs this season and his skipper Luke Chapple threw him the ball on the weekend. He responded with 4/7 from
four overs to help dismiss the Tigers for 187. Ash Mills scored 52 and his former Ballam Park teammate Gavin Gardener-Smith was next best with 45. Balnarring went for quick runs in the second innings and it paid off, with the side scoring 7/182 in just 31 overs. Brendan Saker top-scored with 64. The Tigers needed to bat out the final 34 overs of the match and they made it but not before losing nine wickets in a nail-biter. Brad Arnold claimed 5/34 from 17 overs in the second innings. In the other semi-final, Rosebud batted first and was rolled for just 109 in 39 overs by Red Hill.
Greg McCann top-scored with 37 and Darren Kerr had second-best score with 27. Glenn Collett (3/35) and Simon Dart (3/16) were the best of the Red Hill bowlers, while Ross Corfield snared 2/29. The Hillmen battled hard for victory. At one stage, Red Hill was 3/29 with Dart back in the sheds. However, Collett (37) and Nick Esipoff (23) ensured the Hillmen reached the ordinary total. Red Hill finished on 8/141 off 60 overs. Scott Clark was the pick of the Rosebud bowlers with 2/20. When the grand finalists last met
Red Hill and Seaford Tigers met in the first two-day game after Christmas in round 8. In a low-scoring and uneventful match, the Hillmen batted first and scored 146. Matt Merifield top-scored with 33 and Esipoff also hit 33 to be the best two Red Hill bats. Dave James was the best of the Tigers’ bowlers with 5/48, while Tom Sinclair picked up 3/32. In reply, the Tigers slumped to 4/14 and were eventually bowled out for 93 in 44 overs. Tom Burgdorf top-scored with 29. Collett claimed 4/20 and Dart 3/21 for the Hillmen.

Hyland on top again after Bonaria victory
Nine Tyabb Tennis Club teams in finals NINE out of 10 Tyabb Tennis Club junior teams have made it to finals in the summer season of the Peninsula Tennis Association. The finals will take place across the peninsula on Saturday 16 March with winners progressing to the grand final the following weekend. Tyabb has nine teams entered in the coming winter season and Mornington Peninsula Shire has granted approval for an additional two courts to be built, increasing available courts from four to six. Contact head coach Travis Williams with any junior coaching enquiries on 0407 541 083.
AGE is certainly not wearying veteran Cranbourne trainer Pat Hyland. Now in his 72nd year, Hyland enjoyed another feature race success when Bonaria scored an upset victory in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday. “It is always good to win a feature race and this has been a good meeting for me,” Hyland said after the win. “I won the Kewney Stakes five years ago with a filly called Zarita, who went on to Group 1 success.” Although not in the class of the best females he has trained, Bonaria is certainly very capable when ridden behind the leaders. “I have always wanted her to be ridden patiently and with Tim Clark following the instructions, she showed what she can do,” Hyland said. Since beginning his association with racing as an apprentice jockey in the mid-1950s, Hyland has had an exceptional career. Among his outstanding achievements is to be one of few jockeys to win the “grand slam” of the nation’s four most prestigious races. Hyland had just turned 24 when he won the first – the Cox Plate – at Moonee Valley in 1965. Four years later he won the Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill on the brilliant performer Vain, who was prepared by Hyland’s long-time mentor Jim Moloney. In 1984 he again combined with Moloney to capture the Caulfield Cup on Affinity. This was followed in 1985 by his victory in the
biggest race of them all, the Melbourne Cup, on What A Nuisance, who was raced in partnership by another close friend, super rich owner Lloyd Williams. It was Williams who persuaded Hyland to become a trainer after the jockey won on another Moloney-trained runner, Proud Of It, at Moe in December 1989. Hyland won his first Group with the three-yearold filly Saleous in the VRC Oaks at Flemington in 1995. She won the Group 1 Ansett Stakes at Rosehill the following year. In more recent times he had success at the elite level with three-year-old filly Zarita who went on to become top class. After her Kewney triumph, she was successful in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks and Group 1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville in 2008. At age four, her efforts included fourths in the Group 1 Australian Cup and Cox Plate, and the following year she took two Group 2 races to lift her earnings to more than $1 million by the time she retired. Horses at the Flemington meeting on Saturday that are worth following include Anatina, Saturn Rock, Dazzler, Great Esteem, Wall Street, Petite Diablesse, La Zuma, Aeronautical, Mr Moet, Storm Burst, Goldoni and Sanagas. Thirds into final after thrilling win HASTINGS CRICKET By Greg Bradshaw HASTINGS Thirds finished in fourth spot on the ladder and had to take on ladder leader Balnarring in a rematch from the previous week. The game was played at Somers on a very slow ground and in hot conditions. As in the previous game, Balnarring won the toss and sent Hastings in to bat, maybe with an eye on the Blues’ previous performance. Pat Foy and Greg Bradshaw opened the batting and got off to a watchful start before Foy nicked one and was out for 6, 1/17 in the 7th over. Nick Guest came in at three and looked a little out of sorts and when he was
bowled for a duck, Hastings was 2/32 after 12 overs. When Bradshaw, who had done the bulk of the scoring, played on for 26, the Blues were in trouble at 3/36. The Balnarring bowling was tight and the Hastings batsmen couldn’t handle the swinging ball as Glenn Jansz came and went for 8, Jay Austerberry 3 and Jaysen Bradshaw 4 and the Blues were 6/56 and in strife. The Matts, Foy and Sawosz, then added 17 valuable runs before Foy was caught behind for 11 and Sawosz was out for 14 to leave Hastings at 8/89. Enter big Luke Gibbons who showed some clean power hitting as he smashed 41 not out in the last 6 overs, which included four 6s.
He and Gavin Doig (2) put on 35 runs for the last wicket to give Hastings 126 runs from its full 40 overs. Hastings was buoyed by Gibbons’ innings and took the momentum on to the field when it was Balnarring’s turn to bat. Gibbons and Doig bowled a treat, strangling the openers, which caused a runout thanks to a direct hit from Kayne Lewis, 1/7 after 7 overs. At the drinks break Balnarring had reached 2/21 with Sawosz taking a wicket with his fourth ball. After drinks Gibbons then gave a great Jobe Watson impersonation as he dispensed of his lunch, afternoon tea and drinks all at once before completing his last two overs to have fig-
ures of 10 overs, 6 maidens, 0/9, a sterling effort. The pressure built again as the next pair took the score to 3/68 before Guest pulled off another great runout. At the last drinks break Balnarring needed 56 runs from the final 60 balls with 7 wickets in hand. Kayne Lewis had already bowled a couple of overs but had to keep his nerve as the Balnarring batsmen attacked in the final overs. He claimed a wicket in each of his next 5 overs to finish with 5/27 off 7. Sawosz had bowled his leg spin without much luck up the other end and took 1/33 off 10 tidy overs. Guest also had the job of bowling at the death and took 2/14 off 3 overs as Balnarring
fell 12 runs short to be all out for 114. Austerberry took the final catch, one of three for the afternoon, and sparked loud celebrations on and off the field. The fielding was a highlight for a change with all Hastings players contributed to an exciting victory. Next week Hastings plays Red Hill for the premiership cup. Last Friday the club hosted a sportsmen’s lunch that was well attended. Guest speaker Damien Fleming had the crowd going with his stories and views on Australian cricket. Brett Ryan organised the function. Coming events: Junior presentation night, 5.30pm Friday 15 March. Senior presentation night, 6.30pm Saturday 23 March.

Wallace Memorial Cup all set for Langy By Craig MacKenzie LANGWARRIN soccer club will host the inaugural Steve Wallace Memorial Cup at Lawton Park on Saturday 23 March. The round robin event will feature eight local teams split into two groups and commemorates the contribution to the sport of muchloved peninsula soccer icon Steve Wallace. It also will serve as a fundraiser for the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s intensive care unit where Wallace was treated. Langwarrin, Frankston Pines, Seaford United and Baxter are in Group A while Mornington, Cranbourne, Peninsula Strikers and Skye United are in Group B. The first three rounds will consist of 20-minute halves with a 10-minute half-time break. The final is scheduled for 3.30pm and will be contested over two 30-minute halves. The tournament starts at 10am and all teams are expected to be at the venue for 9.15am to access the change rooms and conduct prematch warm-ups. Stephen William Wallace was 54
when he died on 19 July 2011. He was a former Langwarrin player, coach, president, life member, club council representative and Bayside League referee. “Big Wal”, as he was affectionately known, strode the soccer stage on the peninsula with aplomb for three decades. He arrived in Australia from Rathcoole in Newtonabbey in Northern Ireland in the early 1980s. His brother-in-law Eddie Donald introduced him to Langwarrin Soccer Club. It was the start of a relationship between Wallace and the club that quickly turned into an obsession. Wallace was an inaugural member of a council liaison committee formed a few years ago to represent every soccer club in Frankston City. He could have been excused for being parochial by simply concentrating on promoting his own club’s ambition but Wallace saw the big picture and understood the power of collective bargaining. The liaison committee played a pivotal role in some serious council and state government money being
approved for ground and pavilion improvements throughout the area, none more so than the $1.2 million grant given to Baxter Soccer Club that transformed its old pavilion into impressive clubrooms. Wallace also was co-founder of the Bayside sub-junior leagues along with Baxter president Colin Nicholson. “Overall it’s all about getting the local clubs together and just participating in the name of a man that meant so much to the peninsula soccer leagues,” Wallace’s daughter Tanya said. “We plan to run the cup every year at about the same time and hope the local clubs will continue to participate and show their support. “The response we have received for the inaugural event is really encouraging and we want to thank all the clubs for taking part. It means a lot to us.” Meanwhile local clubs start their league season on Saturday 6 April and the opening round of matches will be previewed in the next edition. There has been a major league
restructure during the off-season that has resulted in the Provisional Leagues being scrapped. There is now one State League One, two State League Two divisions (southeast and northwest), two State League Three divisions (southeast and northwest), four State League Four divisions (south, north, east and west) and four State League Five divisions (south, north, east and west). The revamp has seen Seaford United and Skye United placed in State League Four South and Baxter in State League Five South. All four champions in State League Four will gain automatic promotion to State League Three. The runners-up will feature in play-offs involving the tenth-placed teams in both State League Three divisions.
