Colourful cover up HASTINGS Community House is buzzing with nimble-fingered knitters as members of the craft group prepare for a “yarn bombing”, a secret and surprising subversive act to brighten the suburbs. The community house knitters are also preparing for the Western Port Craft Fest from 10am to 4pm on Saturday at Hastings Uniting Church Hall, corner of Marine Pde and Hodgins Rd. There will be demonstrations and workshops, and sale of craft goods and materials. Entry is by gold coin. See ‘Knitters in a knot over ward money’ on Page 8. Sign of the times: The Hastings Community House sign has been covered in knitted items to promote a coming “yarn bombing” event.

Sale plan to pay for port Picture: Yanni

By Mike Hast THE state government could sell the Port of Melbourne for $2.4 billion and four water authorities to fund five priority infrastructure projects including development of the Port of Hastings. The other four projects are the eastwest tunnel (linking the Western Ring Rd and the Eastern Freeway), rail links to Avalon airport, duplication of major freight highways, and a rail tunnel from Caulfield to Footscray.

Last financial year the port paid a dividend of $13.4 million to the government and earned an after-tax profit of $39 million. Melbourne’s four water authorities are Melbourne Water, City West Water, South East Water (which services the peninsula) and Yarra Valley Water. The revelation of the government’s plans for possible asset sales has already drawn criticism from disparate sources including award-winning eco-

nomics and public policy commentator Ken Davidson and environmentalists. Mr Davidson wrote on Monday that it was “silly to prioritise the port at Hastings while Australia’s number one port at Melbourne has serious problems that inhibit Victoria’s development”. Industry groups, including the Australian Peak Shippers Association, have warned the Port of Melbourne would face major bottlenecks from

2015 onwards as it reached capacity. This has seen the government, led by Ports Minister Denis Napthine, to promise fast-tracking of Port of Hastings development (‘New port start five years away’, The News, 31/1/12). In January Mr Napthine and Port of Hastings Development Authority board chairman Yehudi Blacher told The News Hastings was well suited to become Victoria’s second container port within 10 to 13 years.

“Container movements are estimated to quadruple over the next 30 years and it is critical that we begin planning for this growth now,” Mr Napthine said. But Mr Davidson says development of Hastings could wait until 2035 when Melbourne’s population was expected to be five million. Until then, the Port of Melbourne could be improved by redeveloping the Swanson/Dynon precinct, he said. Continued Page 2

Asset sale plan to pay for port Continued from Page 1

Other suggestions have included developing Webb Dock. The pressure on Port of Melbourne has further increased following claims by government sources, port figures and shipping and automotive industry groups that the government is set to abandon its plan to move all automotive shipping from Melbourne to the Port of Geelong. Port of Hastings has been touted as an alternative port for exporting and importing vehicles, especially with the closure of BlueScope’s hot strip mill, which saw the Iron Monarch bringing slab steel from Port Kembla weekly. The Iron Monarch’s last voyage of slab cargo arrived at Western Port on Tuesday 4 October and the BlueScope jetty is underutilised. Selling the Port of Melbourne and developing Hastings was about catering for Premier Ted Baillieu’s pet projects for Gippsland – exporting from Western Port brown coal, woodchips and coal seam gas, Blue Wedges Coalition president Jenny Warfe told The News on Monday. Ms Warfe said it was insulting the government valued the Port of Melbourne at only $2.4 billion. “Taxpayers recently spent about $1 billion on channel deepening and subsequent maintenance dredging to ‘prepare the port for the future’, as port authorities claimed, she said. “The current estimate to develop the Port of Hastings – a project recently identified by the government as urgently

needed infrastructure – is $10 billion. “Taxpayers have invested in the Port of Melbourne for more than a century and now we are expected to support its hand over to the private sector and then pay again to build Hastings port? “It’s time to join the dots. Dumping the Port of Melbourne and developing Hastings is about the premier wanting to export from Gippsland brown coal, woodchips and coal seam gas, if he can find it. “With massive trains hauling this cargo through our green wedges to Hastings – and Ports Minister Denis Napthine’s proposed driverless trucks trundling up the Western Port Freeway from the Port of Hastings with assorted imports – we are approaching dystopia indeed. The government last month introduced laws forcing the Port of Melbourne Corporation to pay an annual $75 million ‘’licence fee’’ that would increase each year with inflation and generated about $1 billion over the next decade. The Port Licence Fee will add $8000 to $10,000 to the cost of bringing a ship into the Port of Melbourne. The fee cuts both ways as the Victorian Farmers Federation says it will add $10 million to the cost of exporting Victorian farm produce. It has dubbed the fee a “tax on trade. Melbourne has the last publicly owned major port on the eastern seaboard following the Queensland government’s sale of the Port of Brisbane for $2.1 billion and a NSW government plan to privatise Port Botany.

IN the week that selling the Port of Melbourne was mooted, attention again focused on the number of empty containers being exported from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane – a million a year, with food a distant second. Huge numbers of imports have overwhelmed exports, with masses of containers unloaded and then shipped back overseas empty, reported the Weekly Times, one of the nation’s top agriculture publications. For Jenny Warfe of Blue Wedges, it was back to the future: “We’ve known about this since Blue Wedges first looked at export and import data in 2004 when the Port of Melbourne conducted trial dredging in Port Phillip before the channel deepening project of 2008-09, she said. “Our biggest export is empty containers – thin air – and it has been for many years. The Port of Melbourne exported 383,852 empty containers in 2010-11, well above containers of food (256,000) and manufactured goods (168,000). In 2009, the Port of Melbourne exported 292,033 empty containers and 289,841 containers of food. Sydney Ports exported 540,823 empty containers in 2010-11. Next biggest exports were chemicals (49,925) and cereals (45,452). In Brisbane, 98,878 empty containers were exported, ahead of food and fibre (90,000). Mike Hast

Show time

IT’S hard to see, but we reckoned the ferrets racing downhill through plastic pipes were probably holding out their front legs trying to slow down. Of course the winner was first down the chute, so any enterprising owner would clip the nails on the front legs of their ferret, minimising any chance of them slowing down. Perish the thought, all the attractions, competitions and displays at Saturday’s Red Hill Show were above board. The ferrets were pushed head-first into the darkness of the plastic pipes without fuss or manicure. Elsewhere, grown men were being thrown from the back of a mechanical bull while cowboy-hatted farmers walked ribboned live versions around the main arena. Noisy two-stroke motors were gunned as darting young men turned motorbikes into flying machines and older men with muscles chainsawed big logs into sawdust. Noise and activity created its own momentum, and hunger. The crowd meandered around the Red Hill Showgrounds, gazing at farm animals and then grazing on fine fare at one of many food stalls. No one seemed to mind the fact that some of the fare may have originated from similar animals to those being combed and covered with ribbons and clapped as they joined the parade. Kites flew, musicians played and kids bounced in a jumping castle. One of the most popular attractions was the children’s playground – the permanent one that’s free to all-comers every day. Inside the showgrounds buildings, owner-led alpacas held their heads high as judges discussed their stature, wool and bone structure. The oversized pumpkins made us wonder if they ever end up in an oven, saucepan or soup dish. More thought-provoking was the creativity needed to pin mixed vegetables with toothpicks (or glue?) to represent animals and faces. Baskets of vegetables were beginning to wither by day’s end, but the variety and glowing health was a credit to the many greenthumbs who toiled to make such wholesome produce. The photographic exhibition showed the observational and creative promise of many youngsters, with animals, friends and holiday journeys providing a major source of inspiration. Mornington Peninsula Shire’s parking patrol outside the gates was a bit unnerving to anyone who had parked roadside, but once inside, the magic of the show dispelled any thoughts of pink tickets under windscreen wipers. Dolphins’ winning ways THEY may not know it, but the dolphins of Port Phillip are winners. Two Sorrento-based “swim with the dolphins tourism operators have received major business awards. Polperro Dolphin Swims was joint winner of the 2012 Melbourne’s South East Business Awards – Environment and Sustainability Award (shared with Clean TeQ Ltd of Dandenong) while Moonraker won the Ecotourism section of the National Tourism Awards Moonraker was one of three Victorian operators to win a national award. The South East Business Awards recognise success from businesses in the participating local government areas – Mornington Peninsula, Frankston, Cardinia, Casey, Greater Dandenong, Kingston, Knox, Maroondah, Monash and Whitehorse. Polperro Dolphin Swims is owned and operated by the Muir family.

By Keith Platt THE direction of promoting tourism on the Mornington Peninsula is about to get a shake-up, with more emphasis being placed on drawing visitors to Frankston. Mornington Peninsula Shire has backed the establishment of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism Board in partnership with Tourism Victoria and Frankston Council. The board’s 11-member committee would be headed by a part-time “executive chairperson and financed by $25,000 a year from each of the two municipalities and $50,000 from Tourism Victoria. The board will be given two years to draw up a five-year “strategic tourism industry development plan and a “viable funding model. The shire also wants the new board to have stronger links to the Western Port Biosphere Foundation and the peninsula’s marine industry. The shire’s economic development manager Shane Murphy said Tourism Victoria was behind changes to the structure of local tourism boards. He said Mornington Peninsula Tourism and 10 local tourism associations had been “highly successful as illustrated by the number of awards won by and visitors to the peninsula’s tourism attractions. Mr Murphy estimated the peninsula tourism industry at $850 million a year, with four to five million visitors a year. In a report to council’s 13 March meeting, he described tourism as “a major propulsive sector for the local economy. He said there was “more to be done in increasing turnover and efficiency, saying the current MPT

board was mindful of not throwing “the baby out with the bath water if the system was restructured. MPT staff would remain employed by the shire and under his control and its board would become a regional marketing committee. However, the new “skill-based Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism Board would “more likely to secure a greater involvement from Frankston as it evolves into a central activity area. “A wider range of opportunities (investment attraction) will arise for the greater region (Mornington with Frankston), Mr Murphy stated in his report. “An example of this may be the establishment of a regional conference bureau, where Frankston acts as the commercial centre and Mornington Peninsula as the nearby lifestyle and accommodation provider. “This process would obviously take time, however it is an area of future opportunity that may not be fully exploited under existing arrangements. Mr Murphy said the new board would be abolished if it did not successfully produce a five-year strategic plan and new financing plans within two years. “There is more perceived upside than downside to the proposed ‘regionalistic’ approach, Mr Murphy wrote. “Finally, it is important that the 400 tourism industry members are supportive of the proposed changes. There is a strong level of support for the proposed developments at the industry executive level and an information program is planned in March/April to ensure all members are appropriately informed.

Knitters in a knot over ward money By Jo Winterbottom A KNITTING row has erupted in Hastings as the generally mild-mannered purveyors of the ancient craft plot a colourful revenge on a Mornington Peninsula Shire councillor who they say snubbed them in favour of a Frankston-based knitting cooperative. Hastings Community House is abuzz with the clickety-clack of nimblefingered knitters as members of the 40-strong craft group construct scarves and sculptures for a clandestine “yarn bombing raid in Hastings next month. Their work is tumbling out of the office of community house coordinator Lisa Glover. There is a snake of many colours 376 metres long, riotous sculptors and tubes of stocking that would make Knitting Nancy proud. All this and more will be strung up and strewn around Hastings during the wee hours of one day in April. The News cannot reveal the exact day because no one is talking. The whole point of a yarn bomb, according to Ms Glover, is that it is secret and surprising, a subtly subversive act to brighten the suburbs. She said the noses of Hastings knitters were put out of joint when Cr Reade Smith declined to back their attempt at knitting the world’s longest woollen snake (1.5km in length) in favour of the Knit-A-Holics, who he had arranged to visit Western Port to teach the people of

Hastings how to knit. The Hastings knitters, who held a tea cosy extravaganza earlier in the year, knew they were more than capable of yarn bombing their own town and told Cr Smith they would love to be involved following completion of their Guinness record attempt. On behalf of the craft group, Ms Glover told Cr Smith of their displeasure when they discovered he was proceeding with the Hastings yarn bomb by the Frankston knitters, and helping finance it with Cerberus Ward funds. Cr Smith’s response on his Facebook page – which made its way to the KnitA-Holics’ Facebook page on Friday 16 March – suggested the local knitting sisterhood was somehow responsible for corrupting the youth of Hastings. “Today I discovered that members of the local craft movement are just as pathetic as marauding vandals! With adult role models like this, no wonder the kids are running amok! he posted. He threatened to move the yarn bombing event to another town. “I am writing an email to the Bittern and Crib Point residents I know to see if they will support it, he wrote, before suggesting he was the target of “a local anti community politician. He went on to name a Rosebud community activist, who he called “one of the local loony tunes [sic]! The person named was not in any

way involved in the tiff and, as far as The News can ascertain, is not a knitter or crafter. Crafters are a close-knit group and Cr Smith’s approaches to Bittern and Crib Point quickly made it back to the Hastings knitters with promises of solidarity from their knitting neighbours. The News has been unable to contact Mornington Peninsula Shire cultural planner Andrea Ebsworth, who has attempted to resolve the dispute, but it is understood the Knit-A-Holics event has been cancelled and Hastings crafters will hold their own yarn bombing. However, it appears the rift may have had wider consequences for the crafters of Western Port. Some weeks ago, the organisers of the Western Port Craft Fest contacted Cr Smith requesting a contribution from his ward discretionary fund to support the event, to be held in Hastings on Saturday. Cr Smith replied to the group by email saying he did not have time to fill in the necessary paperwork. Cr Smith had not returned calls from The News before the deadline. ď Ž Western Port Craft Fest runs 10am4pm on Saturday at Hastings Uniting Church Hall, corner of Marine Parade and Hodgins Rd. There will be demonstrations and workshops, sale of craft goods and materials; entry is by gold coin.

Authorities battle diesel spill after trawler sinks By Mike Hast GOVERNMENT authorities including Parks Victoria rangers from the Mornington Peninsula are battling a massive diesel spill from a fishing trawler that sank in The Heads early on Saturday morning. The clean-up started on Sunday as diesel leaked into Port Phillip and was pushed toward the southern peninsula’s beaches by a strong southwesterly. Clean-up operations aimed at contain the fuel leak from the trawler were continuing when The News went to press on Monday night. It was reported that the Environment Protection Authority was investigating whether charges would be laid over negligence or pollution. Portsea back beach was littered with fish boxes and nets from the ill-fated fishing trawler Lady Cheryl on Sunday morning. The trawler hit a mystery object near Point Nepean at about 1.30am on Saturday. Six crewmen were rescued by a Port Phillip Sea Pilots boat. Surfers checking out the break at Portsea early on Sunday morning spotted the flotsam and jetsam of the trawler. The 27-metre Lady Cheryl was heading out of Port Phillip to go fishing for five days and was carrying 30,000 litres of diesel fuel as well as 500 litres of hydraulic oil. The captain allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading over the legal limit, police said. Police questioned and released the 42-year-old captain without charge but will make further inquiries. A diving company operator told The News a swell of seven metres had been coming through The Heads on Friday and early Saturday, and had caused a container ship to nearly run aground on Corsair Rock off Point Nepean. He said the waves were so big that the ship’s props were out of the water at times. The diver speculated a container below the surface may have holed the fishing trawler. “Presumably there will be a Transport Safety Victoria investigation into the two incidents,” he said. Marine and coastal project officer Simon Branigan of the Victorian National Parks Association reportedly said he was extremely concerned about the nearby marine park, which had critical natural habitats such as sea grass meadows.

Authorities are battling to stop diesel fuel leaking from the vessel, which was heading out to fish for five days with 30,000 litres aboard.

New home a touch of teal for U3A By Peter McCullough HASTINGS branch of University of the Third Age (U3A) has moved to new digs at 13 Teal Court in the West Park section of town. U3A has had a variety of homes since formation in October 2007, including Hastings Community Hub on Frankston-Flinders Rd (formerly the town’s sports and leisure centre) and the former Community Information and Support Centre in King St. Publicity officer Ursula Fenwick said the new accommodation would allow the branch to continue growing. “We have about 200 members and offer about 50 courses,” she said. Not all courses are conducted at 13 Teal Court; the group also uses Hastings Uniting Church, Hastings Library, Wallaroo Community House, other halls and members’ homes. Courses and activities include book clubs, a square dancing group, cycling, and quaffers. All courses are conducted by unpaid volunteers and there is a waiting list for some such as computer courses. The group is financed by U3A Network, a parent body that provided funds for computers and screens, and last year Mornington Peninsula Shire provided $3000 for a website. Ms Fenwick said local organisations and businesses had been generous with the most recent donation being $500 from Hastings Lions as well as money from the Bittern Market. University of the Third Age is a volunteer learning organisation for retired or semi-retired seniors. (The “first age” is childhood, “second age” is the time of employment and parental responsibility, and “third age” refers to the years of active retirement.) The movement is worldwide, but every group is autonomous and there are no entry criteria for courses. The first U3A was founded in Toulouse, France, in 1972. It started in Britain in 1981 and in Melbourne in 1984.

U3As provide mental and physical stimulation, enlarge personal horizons, knowledge and skills, and provide social activities. Hastings U3A started with 24 members and 12 courses in 2007 following a survey by Hastings Neighbourhood Renewal. Membership is $25 a person with a fee of $2-$3 is charged for most classes, to cover costs such as rent and electricity. The office hours at 13 Teal Court are 10am1pm on Monday and Tuesday, and 1-4pm on Thursdays (closed during school and public holidays). Visitors are welcome to drop in for a cuppa and a chat. Pool to drown us in debt CHEZ Emu has been silent these past few days, apart from muffled explosions, expostulations and exultations from behind the door of Mrs Emu’s study. She has been listening to recordings of the latest council meeting – at work, at play and at war, she tells me in breathless intervals when she puts QuickTime player on pause to sally forth with the latest. Council meetings, she tells me, are now being recorded, and this is the first one. She has downloaded the proceedings from the shire website* and is obviously listening intently. Alas for Emu, she is taking notes and engaging him in discussion about them. Emu wouldn’t know a motion of dissent from a steep incline, but his bride is positively fizzing. So he must listen, to make semi-intelligent noises in reply. After all, the meeting is our steeply inclining rates at work. It appears the recordings are being posted online for the benefit of those who can’t get to the live event. Or you can buy a CD of the meetings, she tells me. Mrs Emu is enraptured, although she wonders about the blank sections in the recordings. “They are being so rude to each other,” she enthuses. “One has accused another of trying to rush this swimming pool thing through without much discussion. And apparently this pool is going to cost nearly $30 million. “They’re saying that will double the shire debt. Where’s the money coming from, some councillors want to know. And so do I – don’t we?” She glares. Emu sort of nods. Now she is describing the pro-pool councillors as “Wets” and the anti-pool ones as “Dries”. “Then another one, a Dry, said he had asked for a written document, and someone – it might have been the chairman, who seems to be a Wet – said ‘You’re not getting it’. I was very surprised by that. It didn’t seem fair. Why couldn’t he have it in writing? Can’t they print things out at council? “Then there was a Wet woman who seemed to be seconding everything, who made the same little speech two or three times – three, I think, and she seemed to be reading it – which seemed a waste, even though it was interesting the first time.” In and out of her study she goes, while Emu struggles to get a few pages further on in his latest Angelique novel. The sultan is getting quite amorous and has poor Angelique cornered in the harem. Bodice ripping appears imminent. “Now they’ve said the architect, who apparently cost us a lot of money, did drawings of this pool which they can’t let us see because apparently they’re not all that good. ‘Why not,’ one Dry councillor has asked. ‘Didn’t we pay for them?’ There must be something in them that needs to be kept secret. I’m starting to wonder about this council,” Mrs Emu said. Emu has been wondering for some time about the proposed two-storey pool, the Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre, which would be built on the Rosebud foreshore. While emus, Dromaius

novaehollandiae, the only member of the family Dromaiidae, are not renowned swimmers, they don’t mind getting their claws wet on a hot day, and the Rosebud foreshore around the Village Green is a lovely picnic place. This may well be the favoured spot for the pool, he ponders. It has long been suggested as the best site. Emu wonders if the architect’s drawings show this as the place for a splash, and this might embarrass the shire and the mayor, Frank Martin, who publicly said the “size and function” of the Village Green would not be affected. And he wonders that an architect as renowned and awarded as Daryl Jackson would produce indifferent work. Mrs Emu is back. Sigh. Book lowered, Emu waits. “They’ve just shown a slide of what will happen to the foreshore when the sea rises – the pool will be surrounded. You’ll have to swim out to it!” Mrs Emu is hopping with either rage or enthusiasm; it’s hard to tell. “And the Rosebud shopping centre will be under water.” Now she, a keen shopper, is suddenly serious. “But it will be all right, they said. They will build a great big wall to keep the water out. We’ll be like Holland. Won’t that be fun?” This captures Emu’s attention. Will the wall have steps for those who want to climb over to shop in Rosebud, then carry the bride’s shopping back up and down stairs? After Mrs Emu has padded off to mahjong for the afternoon, Emu goes and has a listen. He hears warnings from a Dry that rates and charges will have to go up and that large parts of shire borrowings for the next eight years will go to building the pool, at the cost of other infrastructure spending – a pool at the cost of potholed roads and unpainted or unbuilt pavilions, presumably. He is interested to hear that Wet councillors don’t favour telling ratepayers any more than is necessary about what is proposed. It might, one Wet councillor argues, allow opponents to campaign against the pool for political purposes in the lead-up to the October council election. Well, that’s all right, then, thinks Emu. Obviously the Wets don’t plan to campaign in favour of the project – the biggest single spend in the shire’s history, he heard someone say. Can ratepayers afford it? Meanwhile, back in the harem ... * The recordings are at www.mornpen.vic.gov. au/Page/page.asp?Page_Id=1443&h=0  Send news tips and rumours to the Emu at emutips@yahoo.com.au Confidentiality assured.

Fire fears over gas tank dumped near houses SOMERS Fire Brigade’s gas support unit was called to deal with a leaking gas tank in Mt Martha last week. The CFA has urged people to regularly check car LPG tanks and barbecue gas bottles and never attempt repairs or modifications on these appliances after the leaking tank was discovered on the front lawn of a house in Mt Martha. Mt Martha CFA attended the incident

last Thursday after neighbours smelled gas and discovered an abandoned LPG tank at a house in Fairbairn Ave. Mt Martha brigade captain Travis Hutchins said the Somers brigade was called to conduct a flare off to disperse the gas. Mr Hutchins said any leaking gas cylinder was potential dangerous and anyone finding a discarded cylinder

should call 000 straight away. “The risk factor was very high with this case so we were fortunate to get to the gas tank in time before a potentially deadly incident occurred, he said. “People should also seek professional advice before attempting any repairs on tanks that contain a flammable substance.

Get together for ‘call girls’ who knew it all By Joe Paris Lee BEFORE automatic phone exchanges, callers were connected manually by telephonists. In the case of Mornington and district, the mostly women telephonists were at the PostmasterGeneral’s Department (PMG) exchange behind the old Mornington Post Office at the bay end of Main St, now the Mornington and District Historical Society. The exchange closed in 1964, but telephonists meet every year and held their annual reunion at Steeples earlier this month. They call themselves the ‘Call Girls’. At its peak, the exchange had more than 3500 subscribers, with 17 telephonists handling a huge volume of calls on the busiest shifts. “Our shifts were staggered from 7am to 11pm. Then there was just one man on his own from 11pm to 7am, one of the ‘girls’, Mitzi Akers, said. Some of their anecdotes would have caused some red faces if they had “leaked. “What we didn’t know about Mornington wasn’t worth telling, she said. Late one evening one of the women got a call from the local policeman. It was in the days of 6 o’clock closing and he had called to say “If you need me, I’m at the pub. The police, directly opposite the exchange, figured in another story as well. One of them owned a particularly nasty dog that must have got bored with police work one day. The door had been left open at the exchange and the women on duty were forced jumped up onto their desks when the bad-tempered brute wandered in. Ms Akers said the women forged a special bond working in such a vital role in the community. She pointed out Arlie Kellick, the longest-serving telephonist at the exchange (1947-55). “There’s Arlie, who finished up more than 50 years ago and she hasn’t missed a reunion. It seems there’s no stopping the ‘Call Girls’ of the Mornington telephone exchange. “Putting you through now.

By Jo Winterbottom PADUA College has announced plans to build a new campus in Tyabb as demand for places at the Catholic college far outstrip supply. The campus will draw students from Tyabb, Somerville, Hastings, Bittern, Crib Point and Balnarring and the Catholic primary schools in the area – St Brendan’s in Somerville, St Mary’s in Hastings and St Joseph’s in Crib Point. Padua is the only Catholic church secondary school on the Mornington Peninsula. The closest alternative is John Paul College in Frankston. The Tyabb site at the intersection of Western Port Highway and Frankston-Flinders Rd will be Padua’s third campus. The school declined to comment on the news, which was announced in a recent newsletter sent to families, saying it was awaiting official sanction from the Catholic Education Office in Mel-

bourne before revealing more details. Last week, Padua staff met with parents of children attending St Brendan’s Primary School. A public meeting to discuss the new campus will be held at Tyabb Hall on Tuesday 8 May at 7.30pm. In the newsletter, Padua board chairman Noel Davis told parents the Tyabb campus would offer three year 7 classes in 2014. It is understood later year levels would be added as that group of students progressed. Mr Davis said in 2006 the Catholic Education Office purchased 16 hectares in Tyabb “to give us an option to build a third campus should the college student population continue to grow. “This has now eventuated, with enrolment applications well in excess of positions available [and] forecasts indicate this trend will continue well into the future, he said. Like the school’s Rosebud campus, Padua Tyabb will be a junior campus offering years 7 to 10. Students will transfer to the Mornington campus for years 11 and 12. Padua House Preparatory School for Little Boys was opened in 1899 by the Sisters of Mercy at their convent in Tanti Ave, Mornington. It became Padua College in the 1940s and moved to Oakbank Rd in Mornington in 1977, leaving the Tanti Ave site to the use of the convent and St Macartan’s Primary School. St Macartan’s moved to a new school in Bungower Rd, Mornington, two years ago and the Tanti Ave site has been developed for housing. Padua College is a large school by any measure, with a total of about 2000 students. The Oakbank Rd site has a junior and secondary campus with a total of about 1500 students. A junior campus opened in Rosebud in 1987; it now has 460 students and most will go on to attend the senior campus at Mornington. Mr Davies said the Tyabb plans were yet to receive formal approval from “a number of educational and government authorities. “There is a still a lot of work to be done, he said.

Stop smoking to drawback surgery risks SMOKERS waiting for elective surgery on the Mornington Peninsula are being encouraged to quit smoking to reduce their risk of infection and time in hospital. The soon-to-be-launched ‘Stop before the op’ program will provide every Peninsula Health elective surgery patient with information on the negative effects smoking has on surgery recovery. It also provides referral resources to Quitline and Peninsula Health Quit services. Peninsula Health is the only Victorian health service to systematically give patients this kind of advice as well as provide support and referral services. ‘Stop before the op’ was piloted in 2011 by Dr Ashley Webb, a specialist anaesthetist at Frankston Hospital. The study identified the need for a system to advise smokers on the elective surgery waiting list of the health risks of smoking before surgery and providing them with quit resources. “When we undertook the study on our own patients, we also looked at what other Victorian public health care providers were doing,” Dr Webb said. “Not one of them had active systems in place to assist every smoking elective surgery patient to quit.” The pilot program provided quit help packs to 650 patients, which resulted in 12 per cent seeking referrals to Quitline. Dr Webb has now received funding to launch the project across the peninsula to reduce the number of smokers on the elective surgery list. “Quitting smoking four or more

weeks before surgery can have an amazing effect on a patient’s recovery,” Dr Webb said. “By giving up smoking, patients reduce their risk of problems during and after surgery. “They are much less likely to devel-

op potentially severe wound infections and their recovery time is likely to be significantly reduced.” Each year about 6000 elective surgery waiting list patients will be given the ‘Stop before the op’ information. “We provide patients with a bro-

chure outlining the benefits that quitting smoking can have on their recovery from surgery, as well as a Quitline referral form and reply paid envelope so that they can start their smoke-free life as soon as possible,” Dr Webb said. Smokers are encouraged to have a

meeting with a Peninsula Health “quit educator”. “On average, patients who don’t smoke spend less time in hospital following their surgery. This will mean better patient flow on our surgery wards and more beds available.”

West Park to get taxi rank HASTINGS MP Neale Burgess said that access to taxi services will be boosted with the establishment of new taxi ranks in Hastings and Mornington. The construction of the new ranks, which will be overseen by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, is the result of a $112,547 state government grant announced by Transport Minister Terry Mulder. “Taxi services are a critical part of the transport mix in both Hastings and Mornington so this is a big win for sage and convenient transport services on the peninsula,” Mr Mulder said. Mr Burgess said “safety and comfort at both ranks will be paramount with seating, CCTV surveillance, upgrade lightning, more prominent

signage and better separation of pedestrians and traffic”. The funding will also boost accessibility with the Hastings works providing disability access to the community centre and shops for the first time, Mr Burgess said. He said the government was “building stronger communities through better transport infrastructure”. The Hastings rank would be in West Park at the Wallaroo Community Centre, near the Wallaroo Place shops. “The funding was awarded to the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council through the third round of the $4 million Taxi Rank Safety Program (TRSP), announced by Minister Mulder in October,” Mr Burgess said. Mr Mulder said the TRSP was making

improvements to taxi rank safety and amenity all over Victoria. “So far the Taxi Rank Safety Program has allocated more than $1.5 million to councils across the state. “For this round an extra $840,000 has been allocated across 12 municipalities. “The TRSP is part of the government’s commitment to building better taxi services for passengers, taxi drivers and the local community.” The Taxi Rank Safety Program is administered by the Victorian Taxi Directorate. Under the program, councils can apply for grants to improve safety through such works as the installation of CCTV system, upgrade lighting or the provision of shelters and seating.

PENINSULA Health has been forced to apologise after clients and volunteers at Hastings Community Health Centre received notices warning them to apply for a parking permit. Contractors from Wilson Parking distributed the “courtesy parking notice” to every car in the car park at the High St site on Wednesday 14 March. Since last July, all Peninsula Health employees have been required to pay to park at all Peninsula Health sites in Frankston, Hastings and Rosebud. But the Hastings site is also home to Hastings Community House and Western Port Community Support, so every employee, volunteer and resident attending the public services, as well as Peninsula Health clients, received the “courtesy notice”.

WPCS manager John Fraser said he was “outraged” when he found out the notices had been put on every car. “I rely on 45 volunteers to help me run by business and I was not happy to hear they had all received a parking notice,” he said. The notice reads: “You have received this notice because your car is parked in a staff car park without a valid parking permit being displayed” and asks car owners to complete a “parking request form”. “Staff who have been complying with the policy by paying for car parking are, understandably, complaining to site management that their colleagues are continuing to breach this policy” it reads, before concluding “If you have received this notice in error please ignore this advice”.

But Mr Fraser is afraid that parking fees will be extended to all people using the High St site. Nearly all his clients were on very low incomes and could not afford to pay for parking. “Overall, the suggestion that a parking fee be levied on tenants, clients, volunteers and other users is outrageous,” he said. Peninsula Health responded to his concerns in a letter offering an apology and committing to “trying to ensure this doesn’t happen again”. The deputy general manager of community health, Margaret Martin, said there were no plans to extend parking charges or install boom gates at the Hastings site. Jo Winterbottom

The electrical storm on Thursday 15 March was almost finished before it began, according to The News’s resident lightning chaser, photographer Yanni. Not content with staying at home and watching the pixilation of his digital TV screen, Yanni jumped in his car for the clearer vantage point of Rosebud pier. Peace of mind

WITH an ornamental pond at the front and a dazzling in-ground pool at the rear, you can take your pick where to relax and enjoy this peaceful location. A two-lane driveway, with solar-powered gates, arcs past the colonial-style homestead with its high ceilings. A striking timber kitchen has a real touch of character with a wood stove as well as gas hotplates and oven. There are two large living zones – the front lounge has an open fireplace and the family room adjoins a covered deck area that overlooks the pool and gardens. The pool area features a cabana and shade sails. Everything will have its place in the huge shed of almost 112 square metres – about as a big as a small house. Hard to beat for value, this lovely family home has four bedrooms and the main bedroom has an ensuite.

SPOTLESS in presentation and with a thoughtful, modern design, this home can be adapted to suit the larger family. Approximately 233 square metres in size, there are the three established bedrooms, all with built-in robes, and the main bedroom has a large ensuite. The second living room at the front with its own external door could easily double as a large fourth bedroom. The interior has been richly furnished and includes porcelain tiles and high-quality carpets throughout. The large kitchen has ample bench space and cupboards as well as stainless-steel appliances including a dishwasher. The adjoining family area has gas ducted heating and air-conditioning. The home represents fantastic value for money and gives added peace of mind for first home buyers with several years still remaining on the builder’s warranty. Situated on a 600-square metre (approximately) allotment, the grounds have been well landscaped and there is a double garage.

Packed to the rafters

FROM the upstairs verandah of this classic double-brick home, you can gaze across a rural vista to the waters of Western Port Bay. This grand home is big on scale with four large bedrooms, all upstairs, including the main bedroom with ensuite. Built on a heated concrete slab there is approximately 180 square metres of living space downstairs with a neat kitchen, lounge with open fireplace and two air-conditioning units. For the greenthumb there are some established trees around the home and an expansive lawn area, but there is plenty of scope to dig in and improve the surroundings. Set on 0.975 hectares (2.36 acres), there are some fenced paddocks. The price guide has been very reasonably set, given the size of the property, and it is relatively close to town.

Situated in a quiet and private court, the brick home has four bedrooms, including the main bedroom with a walk-in robe and ensuite, as well as a separate study. AROUND THE PENINSULA

Homeward bound for Arnhem girls By Keith Platt FOUR Aboriginal students from Arnhem Land have left for home after spending a week at Dromana Secondary College. The four – Saravina Lalara, Lorita Munur, Maggie Nunggarrgalu and Tiana Roberts – came from Numbulwar, a small community on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory. Numbulwar’s population of just over 1000 people is close to the number of students at Dromana Secondary College (970). This second annual visit by students from Numbulwar was arranged by school council president Murray Turner and his wife Carol, who billeted the students at their house in Point Leo. The Turners are related through marriage to Numbulwar residents, which allows the community “to open up and speak with us about what they want”, Mr Turner said. He said the community was isolated and accessible only by air for five months of the year so coming to the Mornington Peninsula was “a big adventure”. Seven boys were in the first group of students to visit last year and Mr Turner said plans were being made for staff from Dromana secondary to visit Numbulwar. He said life in Arnhem Land community was vastly different to that of the peninsula. “There are 15 people to a house and three kids to a bed. “They speak three languages, and English is last on the list. When they’re

here, they see what it’s like to speak English all day and participate in all of Dromana’s mainstream subjects.” Permanent settlement began at the community in 1952 with the founding of the Rose River Mission by local Aboriginal communities and the

Church Missionary Society. The mission operated until the 1970s when community control passed to the Numbulwar Numburindi Community Council. The community has a general store, a police station, school, an engine repair

shop and post office. Mr Turner said students chosen to come to Dromana attended school regularly. “It’s a reward,” he said. In June, students from Dromana secondary will go to Numbulwar where

they will teach first aid to Aboriginal children. “It’s the first time anything like students teaching students has happened there,” Mr Murray said. “This really is community helping community.”

AROUND THE PENINSULA

Simon’s year of living famously SIMON MCKEON wears many hats. He’s executive chairman of Macquarie Group’s Melbourne office; chairman of the CSIRO; chairman of Business for Millennium Development; former chairman of the Point Nepean Community Trust; on the board of World Vision Australia; works with Global Poverty Project and Red Dust Role Models; and is a yachtsman who holds world speed records. Here he speaks with KEITH PLATT about 2011, when he was Australian of the Year. What did being Australian of the Year mean to you? For me as someone who is interested in a range of different causes, it was an amazing opportunity to spend a year with a giant megaphone permanently attached to my mouth. Did you enjoy the experience? Yes, it was an enormous privilege. I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t point out that I was very tired towards the end of the year simply because of the number of commitments to speak and participate in various events and the fact that it involved continual travel all around the country. What were the highlights of your year as Australian of the Year? Where do I start? I could say that perhaps it was meeting the Queen and having the opportunity to tell her how she played a critical role as a human guinea pig in the development of Aerogard for the CSIRO in one of her earlier visits to this country – all true! But actually, the highlights were generally away from the big events and capital cities and into urban and regional Australia. This is where I met the thousands of Australians who work in the engine room of our great nonfor-profit sector. Hearing their stories, of the way that they have transformed lives, whether they work or volunteer in the disability sector, with our indigenous people or showing our juvenile offenders a different future – these were the highlights of my year. And, while preparing and giving more than 250 speeches and crisscrossing the country was tiring, I always came away uplifted when I was able to meet with these folk. Was there anything in particular you were able to achieve that might not have been possible without being chosen? This is a really hard one, because while I felt I had this “giant megaphone”, the reality is that in relation to every cause that I am involved in, I am merely one voice – part of a team and invariably neither the most eloquent or certainly

the most knowledgeable or expert. It was a great year in relation to some of the areas that I am interested in. For example, the announcement of a National Disability Insurance Scheme, the establishment of an Australian Charities and Not For Profits Commission, the announcement by the Foreign Minister of initiatives to bring AusAid and the Australian business community closer together – 2012 was terrific for all these reasons. But I did take more opportunities to talk often and consistently about the need for philanthropic leadership to be taken up by our wealthiest. This has been occurring in the United States for a long time and, particularly in recent years where, as of today, more than 70 US billionaires and their families have committed to giving away more than half their wealth. This has not yet started to take place in Australia, but at least the debate has well and truly started. I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had during 2011 to push this. What were you required to do during the year? Interestingly, there is very little that the National Australia Day Council formally asked me to do. During the middle of the year the Young Australian of the Year, Jessica Watson, and I did undertake a schools’ tour for several days. And there were perhaps one or two other things that the NADC were hopeful that I would agree to do. But largely it was simply a matter of responding to thousands of requests coming in from all around the country to speak at and participate in various events. What was your reaction when told you were Australian of the Year? I was genuinely dumbstruck when I first became Victorian Australian of the Year and then, of course, when I was announced as Australian of the Year. And, for me, this was simply because I’m actually a very ordinary per-

THE 2011 Australian of the Year Simon McKeon and his youngest son Sam visited the Aboriginal community at Areyonga, a six-hour drive west of Alice Springs. The November 2011 visit was arranged by Red Dust Role Models, a not-for-profit organisation working with remote Aboriginal communities. “It typically trains and then organises for elite sportspeople and other role models to spend time in these communities. A narrow but effective focus, especially when one sees how the kids in particular receive messages about good nutrition, no sniffing petrol, respecting parents and attending school from the likes of Jimmy Bartels and Tom Lonergan from Geelong Football Club who came on this trip. Indeed, my chauffeur out to Aereyonga was James Hird.”

son who just happens to have become passionate about various causes and who has been so privileged to be connected with a range of organisations that have been relatively effective. When I strip it all away, there is nothing particularly special about me. And, frankly, there are thousands, indeed hundreds of thousands, of people like me in this wonderful country. I will go to my grave wondering why I happened to be selected. What I do know is that it was a wonderful opportunity, for 12 months, to spread a message of getting involved in our extraordinarily diverse non-forprofit sector – the sector that does everything that neither business nor government is equipped to do. And which,

on a daily basis, is saving so many Australians from otherwise slipping between the cracks. In what ways did you have to rearrange your life to carry out the duties of being Australian of the Year? Literally, from the moment of the announcement on the eve of Australia Day 2011, I was inundated with so many requests to be involved in various activities. I knew it was for just one year and accordingly we did what we could to accept a sizeable number of invitations and to take the wonderful opportunities that they presented to advocate for causes close to my heart. So there were many things that didn’t happen last year – we didn’t do much sailing. Macquarie Group didn’t see

too much of me. But there were other things that could not be compromised and, for example, I would like to think that my commitment to CSIRO was unaffected. Were you changed by the experience and, if so, how? There is obviously an intoxicating aspect to it. One receives many “A list” invitations. I think there were times when I did allow my head to swell a little – but I hope these were fleeting and, in particular, I hope that they didn’t take me away from the important causes that need promotion. Looking back, I didn’t want to change who I am and I think largely I haven’t. But perhaps that is for others to judge.

YouTube clip inspires skater pilgrimage MT ELIZA Skate Park has opened and is attracting skaters from around Melbourne, thanks to a YouTube video posted by Mornington Peninsula Shire. Skater Ricky Davidson, left, made the hike to Mt Eliza from his home in Beaconsfield after seeing the clip. So enticing is the new bowl and ramps that Mt Eliza Ward councillor Leigh Eustace (pictured front) hopped on a board for the first time in 35 years. “It is absolutely stunning,” he said of the long-awaited facility. He joined hundreds of skaters

PAGE 36

who converged on the park last weekend. The first major event will be a meeting of the Skate and BMX South Eastern League on Saturday 26 May. The $400,000 park was completed ahead of schedule by contractor Convic and the shire has now begun landscaping the area. “The next step is to get a footpath from the village down Wooralla Dve,” Cr Eustace said. He also aims to create a friends group to help maintain the skate park. Picture: Keith Platt

Shire to borrow $12m for pool By Mike Hast MONEY to pay for the multimillion dollar Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre (SPA) will come from five sources including the shire borrowing $12 million. More than 100 residents and ratepayers attended an often rowdy meeting at Peninsula Community Theatre in Mornington on Monday night last week at which mayor Cr Frank Martin warned people in the public gallery several times for interjecting, clapping and booing. It was the first meeting of councillors to discuss the aquatic centre since Environment Minister Ryan Smith in late February gave the shire consent to build the 25-metre pool on the foreshore at Rosebud. The shire has been trying to get foreshore permission for seven years and it took a change of government for this to occur. The proposed foreshore location has been criticised by five of the 11 councillors, ratepayer groups, Upper House Labor MP Johan Scheffer, conservationists and some bureaucrats within the Department of Sustainability and Environment. At the marathon meeting that was 10 minutes short of four hours, councillors and ratepayers were told money for the pool complex would come from five sources – rates, contributions, government grants, asset sales and loans. A report from the shire’s manager of strategic planning, Allan Cowley, stated “the best available estimate at this time is $28.4 million” for the aquatic centre. This is $10 million more than the estimate made in 2006. The report states money for the pool would be “a small component” from rate revenue. “Local businesses and residents with the capacity to support the project both financially and

‘in kind’ will be approached. “Council would be eligible for the state government Better Pools funding of up to $3 million. There is also the ability to source funding from the federal government Regional Development program. “Council has the ability to generate funding through the acceleration of the strategic property review and various larger property holdings currently being prepared for sale.” The report stated the shire had reduced its debt from $45.8 million in 2005-06 to $37.3 million and this would be cut to $26.5 million by the end of 2013-14 “if we don’t borrow in that year”. This would give the council the ability to borrow $12 million, $6 million in each of 2014-15 and 2015-16. “The precise costs and funding sources for SPA will [be] clarified as the project is progressed, however on the basis of known projects/commitments … council should have the capacity to fund and operate SPA.” On Monday, councillors voted 6-5 to approve six points to advance SPA:  The location at the carnival and memorial hall sites (the hall will be part of the ground floor of the complex).  A proposed planning scheme amendment.  Finding design consultants and architects.  Including environmentally sustainable design elements in the plan for efficient use of water and energy, resisting impacts of climate change and potential sea level rise, and indigenous landscape design.  Referring all funding to the budget process. The shire wants three aquatic centres – at Hastings (opened in December 2003), Rosebud and Mornington.

Linebreaker: Craig Alexander was first across the line in Sunday’s ironman event run, swum and cycled from Frankston.

Clear run for ironmen THE going may not have been so easy for motorists in Frankston, but ironman world champion triathlete Craig Alexander, of Sydney, posted his first sub-eight-hour time to claim victory in the inaugural Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship. Frankston was gridlocked for much of the Sunday while hundreds of competitors in the ironman event swam at Frankston, cycled along EastLink tollway and then ran to the finish in St Kilda. The event was Alexander’s first ironman win in Australia. Second placegetter Cameron Brown described the race as the “hardest” of his life. Alexander crossed the finish line in 7 hours 57 minutes 44 second. New Zealander Brown came home in at 8:00:12 with Belgian triathlete Frederick Van Lierde third in 8:01:26. Alexander rated the win as one of his most painful after a poor showing in the 3.8km swim. Australian Clayton Fettell lead the elite men’s field out of the water, covering the 3.8km course in 45 minutes 59 seconds. Fellow Australian Luke McKenzie was second (47:11) with Estonian Marko Albert third (47:13), ironman debutant Greg Bennett (47:18) fourth and Victorian Luke Bell (47:22) fifth. Fettell, contesting his second ironman, extended his lead in the early stage of the 180km cycle and was around 3min 40sec ahead at the 63km mark of the race.

At the midway point of the bike leg, Fettell held a four-minute lead on Joe Gambles with the chasing pack, containing all the pre-race contenders, less than five minutes off the pace. Fettell’s time at the front came to an end around 153km into the bike leg when he was caught by the peloton. Alexander, who had not raced since winning his third crown in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, last October, was well positioned to take the race when he entered the bike-to-run transition as a frontrunner. Alexander entered the transition in eighth place, 33 seconds behind Bell, the first man to hit the run course. At the 10m mark, Alexander, Brown, Llanos and van Lierde were ahead of the field as spectators gathered at the St Kilda Sea Baths finish. In the women’s section Switzerland’s Caroline Steffan posted the second-fastest ever time (8.34.51) to beat the UK’s Rachel Joyce and Australian Mirinda Carfrae. Results Men: Craig Alexander (Aust) 7:57:44; Cameron Brown (NZ) 8:00:12; Frederik Van Lierde (Bel) 8:01:26; Eneko Llano (Esp) 8:02:23; David Dellow (Aust) 8:04:19. Women: Caroline Steffen (Sui) 8:34:51; Rachel Joyce (GBR) 8:46:09; Mirinda Carfrae (Aust) 9:04:00; Joanna Lawn (NZ) 9:06:53; Gina Crawford (NZ) 9:11:16.

TV or not TV – that is the question By Stuart McCullough TO the best of my knowledge, I have been on television exactly three times. The first was during a school excursion to Churchill Island. A camera crew from Channel Nine turned up at the same time and they took footage of us, promising to use it in the resulting story. In an instant, it seemed my destiny was carved well and truly in stone,. Surely my image on television would be an event too magnificent to ignore and Johnny Young would shortly be on the blower, inviting me to become a permanent member of the Young Talent Time team. Like all my friends, I watched the morning show eager to see myself on the box. True to their word, they used the footage of my classmates and me. What the television crew had been careful to avoid promising, however, was the extent of our exposure. Our image flashed across the screen for the best part of a second and a half before cutting to a bunch of cows standing in a paddock. But while our appearance had been barely a notch above subliminal advertising, the camera then lingered on the bovine interlopers for ages. It seemed so unfair. Needless to say, Johnny Young did not invite me to join the cast of YTT or offer me a scholarship to the Johnny Young Talent School. That said, the show subsequently featured a performance by a Friesian heifer doing a knockout version of Men Without Hats song The Safety Dance. It should have been me. The second time I was on television

was part of a promotion by Channel Seven in support of that year’s football season. Mike Brady’s Up There Cazaly was considered something of an unofficial football anthem at the time. It was commonly used as an accompaniment to slow motion footage of the game’s elite players taking spectacular marks. Some bright spark in the marketing department decided that rather than show reels of the game’s best and brightest, it would be fun to show

10-year-olds fumbling around instead. There was always an expectant buzz in the team changerooms before a game. This was not so much in anticipation of the looming contest as the result of discount cans of Coke from the kiosk. Sugary soft drinks aside, there was another element to add to the already heady mix of excitement – Channel Seven would be filming our game. Given that I was holding down the glamour position of half-back flank/

interchange bench, it was inevitable that the camera would find its way to me much as the sun finds the horizon. Finally, I would be catapulted from obscurity and onto the TV screens of a grateful nation. There was just one problem – it was pouring with rain. I don’t know if it rained every Sunday we had a match, but I certainly remember it that way. The greatest contest at the home ground of the Tyabb Junior Football Club was often between the players and the elements rather than each other. On this particular occasion the heavens really outdid themselves, sending rain down in such great volumes that several parents left the oval to go home and start building an ark. Despite the inhospitable conditions, the camera crew from Channel Seven arrived, wrapped themselves in Glad Wrap, and took up a position on the wing. Those who nurse some hostility toward the national game often seek to belittle it by using the term ‘aerial pingpong’. On a wet Sunday afternoon in Tyabb, nothing could be further from the truth. After a few minutes, trying to kick the ball was like attempting to drop kick a bar fridge. The only thing to hang in the air was our breath as it turned to frost. Such games are more a form of advanced mud wrestling than anything remotely airborne. The disappointment of the camera crew was apparent in the resulting commercial. It never occurred to me that ours would not be the only game filmed. As the strains of Up There Cazaly

filtered through the television speaker, there were images of 10-year-olds leaping into the air. Then it came to us. For a full two seconds, torrential rain filled the screen. The more observant of viewers may have noticed the slightest smudge of maroon falling over. It was like one of those magic eye puzzles but with too little time for any clear image to emerge. Whether the maroon blotch was me or one of my teammates was impossible to tell. My third and final television appearance occurred after I had won a public speaking competition. I was invited to reprise my award-winning address on an educational television program on SBS. Before unleashing me on the cameras, I was dropped into the makeup chair and smeared with enough foundation makeup to make me look like an extended Oompa Loompa. I immediately regretted my decision to wear white overalls and shoes with curled up toes instead of my school uniform. Today’s kids play video games as if their lives depend on it. For us, it was television. Despite cataclysmic warnings that our eyes would become squared, we devoured everything it dished up to us. But that affection has proved somewhat one-sided. Perhaps most great passions are unrequited. So it is with television and I. It can treat me as a runner-up to a photogenic cow or make me look like an unemployed chocolate factory worker, but in spite of myself I love it still. www.stuartmccullough.com

Performance TWO events occurred in the life of Australian songwriter Allan Caswell on 9 March – he turned 60 and released his first children’s album, Just Kidding. Not that he is new to children’s music. During the 1990s he co-wrote and co-produced a series of successful children’s albums with Don Spencer. Just Kidding contains several muchloved Caswell–Spencer classics including Bob The Kelpie, Please Don’t Call Me A Koala Bear and Aussie Mossie (although the performance is definitely Allan Caswell) as well as new songs that Caswell (pictured) wrote with Drew McAlister (Hands), Kaylee Bell (the duet Australia and New Zealand) and Mick Hamilton (I’m An Aussie Shark). The delightful Joey the Barbecue Blowie was written by Caswell, his wife Marian and youngest daughter Georgia. The first single off the album is the very funny Skin. “Most people think children’s music is a separate genre, but I see it as quality songs for really intelligent people who just happen to be eight years old. I write country music and I am as proud of these songs as any I’ve written.”

Just Kidding was originally intended as an album for Allan and Marian’s first grandson, Parker. Since the recording started they were told two more grandchildren are on the way, so a sequel is definitely on the cards. Caswell wrote On the Inside, the theme of the successful TV series Prisoner. He has had more than 1000 songs published and more than 500 recordings of his songs made worldwide. He has collected a swag of awards including Golden Guitars and from ARIA and APRA. Just Kidding is on Shoestring

Productions include Julie Taymor’s family-friendly The Magic Flute, Graeme Murphy’s much-loved production of Turandot, with Rosario La Spina’s spine-tingling Nessun dorma; the comic talents of Dominica Matthews, Conal Coad and José Carbó in The Barber of Seville (to be recorded for cinema broadcast); and a new production of The Merry Widow with Hobson and Amelia Farrugia. Turandot opens at the State Theatre on 10 April. Tickets 9685 3700 or online www. opera-australia.org.au *** THE peninsula’s community station Radio Port Phillip has a new website following its relocation from the Moorooduc Coolstores to new studios in Wilsons Rd, Mornington. The website has peninsula news, weather and a full program guide. RPP broadcasts to the Mornington

Peninsula and Frankston, with a potential audience of about 300,000, but can be heard further afield courtesy of the station’s whizz-bang new equipment. The station features a variety of programs including Healthy Body on Monday, The Voice of Sport on Saturday, Sunday Late Brekky Show (with the legendary Bob Phillips and Judy Banks), Jazz Time Traditional, Country Magic, the Environment Show, and Stage, Screen and Theatre just to name a few. Station manager Brendon Telfer, a former ABC Sport producer, has brought a great deal of experience and professionalism to the station. RPP broadcasts on 98.3 and 98.7 FM and also streams online from the website. There are two domestic (60c)

she let Simon Crean, Wayne Swan and others viciously attack Kevvy’s character before the vote? Then the victory walk, real school bullying “up you for the rent” sort of thing followed by Julia waxing lyrical about the manner in which Kevvy accepted the vote. Lastly Bob Carr as Foreign Minister, an unelected MP? It’s been done before, but it’s ugly. I can’t vote for Tony or Bob, so move on again. *** “BOYS and girls come out to play happy and well the Laxette way.” The combination of the first line of that old nursery rhyme and Laxettes is most appropriate with Rupert Murdoch running at around 70 per cent and Gina Rinehart bidding for the rest. Neil Mitchell says it will not change his line of thinking, or words to that effect; very funny Neil – why would you? And Tony, he couldn’t be happier, at the moment anyway. They all barrack for Carlton no doubt. Does a tsunami approach? *** STUDIO Sorrento Players is doing a pantomime called The Wanderer, written and produced by Ngaire Johansen and starring Cody Watts, Siobhan Turner, Isabella Carlson, Justin Gardam, Angela Comben, Niki Ellen

and Ngaire Johansen. It’s on at the Sorrento Activities Centre (the seniors’ hall) on the corner of Melbourne and Queens roads, Sorrento, from Saturday 7 April till Tuesday 10 April at 5pm. Tickets ($10) at the door; enquiries 5984 5176. Children under 16 to be accompanied by an appropriate adult. Friends who see enough of me should stay away, but I recommend they come and see the delightful rapport that has developed between the five young people aged from 11 to 16 and the three young-at-heart, 60-plus veterans who make up the cast. *** CAN Mzzz Melody’s Party win the 2013 election? Yes, if the lady decides to tell us her vision, assuming she has one. Nobody was in doubt about Hawke, Keating or Howard’s vision. Perhaps scrap Greg Combet, Bill Shorten and Wayne Swan doing those rehearsed prop-up speeches. There’s no doubting her ability as a backroom operator, but she needs to shed that cloak and lead from the front. The old Julia may well get the job done but to win the vote she must be seen to lead. Half a chance thanks to Tony. The last word on poor Kevvy: “We Queenslanders are made of sterner stuff.” Bad enough he

choked us smokers with his outrageous tax without the silly Queensland tag. *** I WAS working at a provincial race track circa 1990 for the TAB when the suits arrived. Seemingly intelligent, but way out of their comfort zone. “How was the turnover looking?” As in how much money were we taking at that particular meeting in relation to the same meeting the previous year, which had attracted a big crowd with a healthy turnover. On this day it was raining; the crowd was down. “Not happy Jan.” A catastrophe! The clowns departed with long faces. Take this a step further and we read of the banks or whoever being down or up on profits, always related to their previous measuring stick. The ANZ (or whoever) make 20 million a month, so they sack 1000 people, perhaps hire overseas at cheaper rates to make 21 million a month. Why? What was wrong with the 20 million a month? Extend this to the other banks as well as Coles and Woolworths, and there you have it. Good for the bosses, good for the shareholders but far from good for our pockets. Greed is good. *** PETER Leahy, director of the National Security Institute: “Soldiers,

By Gary Turner stamps, depicting the radjah (or raja) shelduck and the pink-eared duck, and two international stamps ($1.65 and $2.35) with the Australian shelduck and the plumed whistling duck. Pope acquired a love of wildlife growing up in regional South Australian towns. The stamp issue is his fourth commission for Australia Post, having illustrated Cocos (Keeling) Islands visiting birds (2008), Songbirds (2009) and Australian kingfishers (2010). Australia is home to 28 species of ducks, of which 10 are endemic. The stamps are available from Australia Post outlets, by mail order on 1800 331 794 or online www.auspost. com.au/stamps Australia Post has given MP News Group some Australian waterbirds packs for readers. Simply send your name and address on the back of an envelope to Stamps Giveaways, PO Box 588, Hastings 3915.

A Grain of Salt WHAT is plan A? Well, pretty obvious really: all running smoothly with my children, grandchildren, relations, friends and my health. An extra quid always adds icing but the horses don’t listen. So Plan B? Powerball of course! 10 million will just about do it. I already have the envelopes, stamps, a new chequebook, credit card, pills and laptop. A taxi to town to claim, a telephone call to the ‘Gestapo’ (Centrelink) and first class flight to a Paris five-star hotel for three months. Incognito. Keep in touch, seemingly from Daylesford, send discreet cheques after eight weeks. Read online newspapers, post my column. Perhaps not Daylesford; too many female friends there. Rockhampton? Neil Young: “Keeps me searching for a heart of gold. And I’m getting old.” Hahaha. *** IT’S no secret I support the Australian Labor Party, but my loyalty is being tested. I was never happy about the Prime Minister’s deputy organising an overnight coup on the man who toppled John Howard, but I moved on, as we do. Then we arrive at Kevvy’s challenge and this is where it got sticky. Surely Mzzz Melody was confident about the voting; so why did

Joke!!! A MAN goes on a holiday to the Holy Land with his wife and mother-in-law. Halfway through their trip, the mother-in-law has a fatal heart attack. An undertaker explains that they can ship the body home, but it will cost $5,000. The alternative is to bury her in the Holy Land for $500. “We’ll have her shipped home ,”says the sonin-law. “Are you sure?” asks the undertaker. “That’s an awfully big expense. And I assure you we do a very nice burial here.” “Look,” says the son-in-law, “two thousand years ago they buried a guy here, and three days latewr he rose from the dead. I just can’t take the chance.”

SPORTS DESK

It’s Hawks v Pies at ’G and Tigers v Blues 19 disposals a game. For the Suns a question is can they step up in the absence of Nathan Bock and Danny Stanley. This match will be a blowout in favour of the Crows. Adelaide by 36 points.

Thursday March 24 Richmond v Carlton, MCG 7.45pm Traditional rivals meet in the regular round 1 blockbuster on Thursday night at the home of football. Interestingly these teams couldn’t have had more different pre-seasons with Richmond upsetting the likes of Hawthorn and Geelong, and Carlton losing all five matches. Luckily for the Blues the preseason counts for very little. In previous years this game has been a blowout in favour of Carlton, but Richmond look poised to challenge the Blues all the way to the final siren. After injuring his hamstring in February, Tiger Brett Deledio played his first game two weeks ago and impressed with 33 disposals. Richmond will be improved, but Carlton has more experienced men and should get over the line. Carlton by 19 points. Friday March 25 Hawthorn v Collingwood, MCG 7.50pm Two of the league’s heavyweights kick off their campaigns in the match of the round. Last time they met, Hawthorn outplayed the Pies for three quarters, but failed to finish them off. It’s fair to say we can expect a game of similar intensity, but the result could be a little different. For the Magpies the main question is who will play on Lance Franklin? It was Chris Tarrant last time, but he’s had an injury interrupted pre-season. The Hawks had a stellar pre-season, winning four of five games, but with injuries to Roughead and Bailey, they have no experienced ruckman. Collingwood’s midfield will prove to be pivotal. Collingwood by 1 point. Saturday March 26 Melbourne v Brisbane, MCG 1.45pm After the death of club legend Jim Stynes, the Demons will be playing like it’s a grand final. New skipper Jack Trengove will break the record for being the youngest captain in AFL/VFL history at age 20. Mark Neeld will coach his first game and explosive forward Mitch Clark will play his first official match for Melbourne against his old club. The Lions last year travelled poorly, winning just one of 10 interstate games. It will be interesting to see who Brisbane plays at full-forward in the absence of Jonathan Brown. Melbourne will be psyched up to win. Melbourne by 33 points. Gold Coast v Adelaide, Metricon Stadium 4.45pm With their first year resulting in a wooden spoon, the Suns’ redemption starts now as they play the ever-improving Adelaide. The Crows enter the game after snagging the NAB Cup where they won all five games. Emerging superstar Rory Sloane played a stellar tournament averaging more than

Fremantle v Geelong, Patersons 4.40pm The Cats’ 2012 premiership defence begins on Saturday in Perth against an unknown quality in the Fremantle Dockers. It will be interesting to see how Aaron Sandilands fares in his first game since a toe injury put him out for most of last season. He will be rucking against the inexperienced Trent West and Orren Stephenson. Last time the Cats played in the west, they were beaten by the Eagles in a thriller. Geelong should have no problems defeating the Dockers but a the Cats will have a fairly young team. Geelong by 12 points. North Melb v Essendon, Etihad 7.40pm In another great match-up, these two middle-ofthe-road teams will be looking to start the year with a bang. For North Melbourne they have put in a solid pre-season campaign, finishing off in style by defeating Carlton. The Kangaroos could have a surprise return in Nathan Grima, who injured his knee in the NAB Cup. The Bombers have positives with the return of Courtenay Dempsey and Jason Winderlich, who missed the majority of 2011 with knee injuries. This should be a ripping match. Young players to watch for are Mullet of North Melbourne and Michael Hibberd of Essendon. North Melbourne by 11 points. Sunday March 27 Western Bulldogs v West Coast, Etihad 1.10pm After being runners-up in the NAB Cup, the Eagles are looking in fine form. They have the best ruck duo in the comp with Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui, who will be more than a match for Will Minson and Jordan Roughead. For the Dogs, the match will most likely be the beginning of good careers, with Clay Smith and Tory Dickson capable of making the team. It will be interesting to see how Brian Lake goes when he plays on either Josh Kennedy or Quinten Lynch. Overall the Eagles will be too strong for the inexperienced Bulldogs. West Coast by 56 points. Port Adelaide v St Kilda, AAMI Stadium 4.10pm To cap off a big round of footy, St Kilda will go west to take on last year’s cellar dweller, Port Adelaide. The Power have slid under everyone’s radar during the pre-season, beating accomplished teams such as Carlton, Fremantle and Melbourne. In more positives, Port will play four new recruits in Brent Renouf, John McCarthy, Chad Wingard and Darren Pfeiffer. The Saints will want to welcome their new coach Scott Watters in style, but they can’t afford to get complacent as Port is a lot better than many people think. Last time these teams met St Kilda won easily in the wet. St Kilda by 8 points. Follow Casey on Twitter at FootballTragic9

Within reach: Kelly Smetham in action for the Hastings Football and Netball Club at a practice match against Seaford. Picture: Andrew Hurst

Of nags and chooks OVER the years the Hastings Football Club has had a number of trainers, some of them real characters. I have already mentioned Charlie Gresham in my Red Hill story. “Rainbow”, as he was affectionately known by the boys, owned a few acres of land on the foreshore of Western Port, with about enough feed on it to run one rabbit to every three acres. So what does he do? He buys a horse to ride down to training. Eventually it starved to death and Rainbow was left with the problem of getting rid of it. He decided it would be much easier to get rid of it a few pounds at a time rather than dig one big hole so he cut it up and had bits of it all over the farm, much to the delight of the foxes.

We also had Sid Whitewick who was about five feet tall and built like a gorilla. Sid had done a fair amount of wrestling and, as well as being our trainer, he often filled a vacancy on the field. On one such occasion we were playing Sorrento, which also had a wrestler in the team and, by some mischance, Sid found himself playing on this bloke. The game hadn’t been in progress for long when they were right into it with aeroplane spins, Indian deathlocks and the works. It took about eight blokes to separate them. Sid had a couple of fingers missing from his right hand,

and this landed him in trouble in Frankston one night after a game. We’d all had tea at “Sloppy Joe’s” and were walking back to the bus, parked down the road near the pub, when Sid emerged from a gateway with four chooks, two in each hand. The two he had in his good hand were nice and quiet – he’d choked them – but he was having trouble with the other two. They were flapping their wings and making so much noise they could have been heard in Chelsea. We got Sid, chooks and all onto the bus and out of town as fast as we could. Hastings Fourths grab D Grade premiership By Greg Bradshaw HASTINGS Cricket Club’s Fourths have won the grand final against Mornington, but it was heartbreak for the Thirds, who went down to Rosebud in a close game. In the Fourths match, Mornington chose to bat first and Shaun Manby claimed a wicket in his second over. The next pair added 27 runs before Jason Manby found his line and length, and knocked over both batsmen, 3/37. Colin McVeigh and Jason Kestle bowled very good spells each taking two wickets, reducing Mornington to 7/49 and in deep trouble. Shaun Manby returned to bowl his last two overs with good effect, leaving Mornington at 8/51 before the ninth wicket pair dug in and batted 13 overs to take the score to 9/91. The final wicket pair added another 24 runs to give Mornington a total of 115 off 37 overs. The bowling and fielding was great and restricting Mornington to 115 was an excellent effort. The Manby brothers took 2/7 and 2/9, Kestle 2/10, McVeigh 2/12 and Chris Lehmann 1/21. Hastings opened with Greg Bradshaw and David Hull, but lost two early wickets to be 2/20. Hull was batting well and a couple of hook shots for six were brilliant and kept the score ticking over. Again two wickets fell in quick succession to leave Hastings on 4/50 before Hull and Jason Manby put on a 46-run partnership, but were dismissed in successive overs, 6/104, with Hull making 48 and Manby 25. Grant Masterson and McVeigh restored order and reached the winning total. Hastings finished with 6/117 and finally a D Grade premiership after three years of trying.

It was great playing with a young, enthusiastic group who didn’t take things too seriously but were there to win for each other. Hastings Thirds travelled to Rosebud with neither team having played each other during the regular season. Hastings batted first on a lush Rosebud ground, getting away to a slow but steady start. Pat Foy, Stuart Burrows and Morgan Darrer all reached double figures but failed to go on with their innings; Hastings 3/62. Glenn Jansz 35 and Chris White 31 put on a valuable 60-run partnership and with Andrew Finn hitting a quick 22, Hastings reached 8/161 off 40 overs. Rosebud lost an early wicket thanks to a straight ball from Finn, while Stephen Lewis toiled hard, taking 2/20 off his 10 overs. At the 30-over mark the game was evenly poised with Hastings needing four wickets and Rosebud 60 runs. One of their players decided it was now or never as he tried to smash his team home. In the end his 44 runs were invaluable, but three dropped catches gave him the chance to make the runs and take the game away from Hastings. Rosebud scored the winning run with three balls to spare; a great game down to the wire but a heartbreaking loss for Hastings who did well to make the grand final. Rosebud finished on 8/164. Kayne Lewis again showed promise taking 2/22, Kevin Watson 1/32, Finn 1/45 and Marsh 1/19. Senior presentation night is at 6.30pm on Saturday 31 March at the Hastings Club. Book with Scott at the club on 5979 1740. The club’s major raffle will be drawn and sold tickets can be left Hastings Club reception.
