Big pay day for state MPs By Mike Hast VICTORIAN politicians will earn more than $150,000 a year under legislation introduced on Thursday. MPs will get an expense account of more than $11,000 and superannuation for those elected after 2004 rises from 9 to 15 per cent. For the first time, MPs defeated at an election will receive a “resettlement allowance” of $70,000, equal to six months of basic pay. The allowance also applies to MPs who have been disendorsed by their
parties before a poll. Politicians elected before 2004, who have a generous defined-benefits scheme, will not be eligible for the allowance. The increases have the support of both major parties. In exchange for the increase, some perks would be scrapped, including free entry to the MCG, interstate train travel, free entry to Melbourne Zoo and free airport parking. Last week the state government refused to say how much the changes would cost taxpayers but it has been reported that the new deal could
cost more than $1.8 million a year. The pay rise has angered sections of the community with calls to talkback radio on Friday best summed up by one comment: “This makes my blood boil; no wonder we are so cynical about politicians.” Others said the rises were an insult to police, teachers and nurses who were forced to run long campaigns to win extra pay from the government. But MPs have defended the rises, saying the legislation would break the connection between Victorian MPs and federal politicians.
Under the current system, state MPs are paid the same as federal MPs, less $5700. Last year the federal pay tribunal paved the way for big increases for federal MPs. This would have resulted in a $47,000 rise for some state MPs on 1 July. Hastings MP Neale Burgess said the new legislation would severe the link between state and federal pay rates. “My Coalition colleagues and I will vote to break the link with federal MPs and refuse the almost $50,000

increase,” he said. “For many years the income of state MPs has been linked directly to that of their federal counterparts. “Instead state MPs will receive a 2.5 per cent increase this year and 2.5 per cent next year.” Frankston’s rebel MP Geoff Shaw reportedly said he would welcome a pay rise. People thought MPs were overpaid and underworked but this was not the case, he said. Nepean MP Martin Dixon and Mornington MP David Morris did not respond before our deadline.

Cash for cop shop By Mike Hast SOMERVILLE has $14.3 million for a police station with the money in the state budget released last Tuesday. The 24-hour station will be built on the corner of Eramosa Rd West and Coolart Rd. The $2 million to buy the land as well as start the design process was allocated in the 2011-12 budget. In September, then Police and Emergency Services Minister Peter Ryan and Hastings MP Neale Burgess visited the site to publicise the first step. Mr Ryan said no date has been given for the opening of the “$10 million 24hour police complex”. He described the land as “the perfect location and size to support a 24-hour police complex”. “Once completed, the community will benefit from a centrally located police station that provides easy access to Somerville, Moorooduc, Hastings, Tyabb, Pearcedale, Baxter and Langwarrin South,” Mr Ryan said. “The 2500-square metre station will accommodate a uniform branch, highway patrol unit, management, special tasking unit, administration and warrants personnel.” Mr Burgess said the central site would “take the pressure off the Hastings police station. Hastings will retain
its contingent of officers but have a smaller area to cover”. The Mornington Peninsula fared far better in Tuesday’s state budget than last year. Other big ticket items for the peninsula included: $110 million for the Port of Hastings (announced on 4 April). $2.8 million for Rosebud Primary School. Money for South East Water to continue works at Mt Martha and Boneo sewage treatment plants. Last year the budget provided little for the region. The biggest item was $9.6 million for speed cameras on Peninsula Link freeway which have yet to start operating (see Page 5). Last year the Port of Hastings received $4 million. In this year’s budget, neighbouring Frankston fared better than the peninsula with $100 million to upgrade the Frankston train line, $13.8 million to upgrade Frankston station, $8.1 million for Mt Erin Secondary College and $2.5 million to remove silt from Kananook Creek. Mr Burgess said he was “delighted” with the budget and that “the electorate of Hastings, including communities in the Western Port and Langwarrin areas, have been a big winner”.

Entertaining couple open academy A NEW children’s song and dance academy in Hastings has been set up by former child star Jamie Redfern. Mr Redfern is best remembered as a member of the television show Young Talent Time in 1971 when he was 14. Now in his 50s, he has had a wide-ranging international career in showbiz that has come full circle in recent years. There have been guest appearances with children’s entertainment outfit The Wiggles and his show on Foxtel community TV channel Aurora, Jamie Redfern’s Superkids.

With his wife Judy Ward Redfern, a dancer, Mr Redfern established the Star Quality Performing Arts Academy about 10 years ago. It is based in Hoppers Crossing. The Hastings school, to run from a church hall, is the first of a planned expansion to several venues throughout the Melbourne area. Mr Redfern will teach singing and acting and Ms Redfern, a classically trained ballerina, will teach dancing. Wendy Clair will also be involved. “People just love getting their kids into song and dance because it is so healthy for them,” Mr Redfern said.
With the unflagging enthusiasm of an entertainer who has seen more than his fair share of success, Mr Redfern outlines future plans that include more television and stage shows. “We’re looking to move into developing characters and children’s shows,” he said. The Starmaker Song and Dance Studio is based at Hastings Uniting Church hall, corner Hodgins Rd and Marine Pde. For details call Jamie Redfern on 0421 720 932. Jo Winterbottom

Space open for comment MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire has commissioned a master plan for the management and development of Flinders Park and the Cook St open space in Flinders. “We’d love to hear from the community about how they currently use these open spaces and what they would like to see in the future,” Cr Frank Martin, right, said. He gave examples of the sort of suggestions that could be made such as more picnic tables, more open areas, improvements to play facilities at Flinders Park or how best the open space at Cook St could be used. He said Flinders Community Association had been active in promoting ideas for the improvement of the village centre, including preparation of concept plans for Flinders Park. He wanted the community to become involved in the project and it was important the community had a say in the planning.
“All comments will be considered in the preparation of the long-term master plan for the area and we look forward to keeping you up to date throughout the process.” Comment on Flinders Park and Cook St open space at www.mornpen.vic.gov.au/Whats_On/ Your_Say, or call the shire on 1300 850 600 or 5950 1000, email: strategic.admin@mornpen. vic.gov.au

Link speed cameras yet to click By Mike Hast PENINSULA Link freeway opened on 18 January but its six fixed speed cameras are still not working, depriving the state government of revenue and forcing police to patrol the road and book speedsters. In last year’s Budget, the government allocated almost $10 million for the cameras but they were not installed before the road opened because freeway builder Abigroup restricted access as it rushed to complete the freeway on time after more than two years of above-average rain. On Tuesday, a Department of Justice spokesman told The News the cameras had been installed but “were being commissioned”. “A vigorous and comprehensive testing regime under live traffic conditions will take place before any camera is switched on,” the spokesman said. “Testing will begin once the commissioning phase is complete. “The road safety cameras will be switched on when, and only when, Victoria Police and the Department of Justice are completely satisfied the system is ready.” In late February, the department reportedly said drivers would be given notice via roadside signs. “An announcement about the switch-on date will come later in the year.” The six cameras on the 27-kilometre freeway between EastLink tollway in Carrum Downs and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Mt Martha are in pairs, all in Moorooduc – one in each direction at the Loders Rd flyover, Mornington-Tyabb Rd off-ramps and Eramosa Rd West flyover. The cameras will function as instantaneous cameras as well as point-to-point units. Installed by Melbourne-based company Redflex, the point-to-point cameras photograph a vehicle’s number plate as it passes the first camera, which is then compared with the plate of the vehicle as it passes the second camera. The average speed is calculated and any ve-

hicle with an average exceeding the limit will receive a fine. The government’s website Cameras Save Lives states the Peninsula Link cameras “encourage safe driving behaviour for the length of the freeway”. “In 2011, the Auditor-General found that crashes on freeways are likely to have serious road trauma consequences, due to large traffic volumes and high speed. “Road safety cameras on Peninsula Link, and those in operation on other main highways ... ensure drivers comply with speed limits and prevent unnecessary trauma on our roads. The road safety cameras on Peninsula Link, along with direct policing, support safer roads and safer driving behaviour – ultimately, saving lives.” A police spokesman said patrols would continue to enforce speed limits while the cameras were being tested.
Redflex is a South Melbourne-based company founded in 1997. It provides vehicle monitoring and enforcement services to government, police and traffic departments and operates primarily in Australia and the United States. It makes fixed multi-lane, multi-sensor red light and speed enforcement cameras, mobile radar and laser speed enforcement systems, and infringement processing software. The US division of Redflex has been embroiled in a corruption scandal involving the City of Chicago over alleged improper payments to a city transportation official since late 2010. Its market capitalisation has been reduced by more than 50 per cent since October 2012. Redflex blames the alleged corruption on its US subsidiary and its employees without the knowledge or involvement of staff at the Australian parent company.
Freeway bridges ‘safe’ CLAIMS three Peninsula Link bridges are unsafe have been rejected by freeway authorities Southern Way and Linking Melbourne Authority. Total Building Construction managing director Chris James said he warned the two bodies that large blue metal decorative panels had not been correctly attached to at least three bridges over the new freeway including where it goes over EastLink tollway. Mr James, who claims he is owed $1.5 million by freeway builder Abigroup, said some panels had a “high probability of a collapse”. But Linking Melbourne Authority said there was no safety risk to drivers. All bridges had been inspected and signed off by an independent reviewer prior to the freeway’s opening in January this year, the authority said. Big blue: Bridges over the freeway with their decorative panels.
On wing for 29th bird show A BIRD society founded on the Mornington Peninsula 30 years ago is holding its annual bird sale and expo later this month. It will be the 28th annual show by Mornington Peninsula Avicultural Society. It is on Sunday 26 May at KCC Park (State Dog Centre), 655 Westernport Highway, Skye. Society president David Renshaw said the show would feature a wide range of avicultural products for expert and amateur bird fanciers with more than 100 Victorian and interstate breeders selling birds. “It’s the state’s premier bird sale and expo and one of the largest in Australia,” he said. “In the trade section we will have pheasants and waterfowl, aviaries, carry boxes, display cages, birdfood, vitamins and bird toys.” Mr Renshaw said the trade area opens to the public at 9.30am and bird sales start at 11. Birds on sale will include exotic types as well as Australian varieties such as parrots, finches, quails, doves, budgies and canaries. Bird specialists would provide advice and tips to people starting out. The society was founded in 1983 and is seen as one of the strongest and most active in the state. It meets in the New Peninsula Church lounge, 370 Craigie Rd, Mt Martha, on the third Monday each month at 8pm. implementing biodiversity protection works in central Victoria. A “connectivity map” produced by the workshop captures “important biodiversity assets and opportunities across the broad landscape”. “The interest shown by the community in the workshop and the detailed feedback provided will greatly enhance the outcome of the final plan,” Western Port Biosphere project coordinator Chris Chambers said. The biosphere’s executive officer Cecelia Witton said the workshop was a significant step in bringing to fruition years of hard work by all people involved in the biosphere. “The information gathered will be invaluable in future planning and implementing of works across the biosphere for years to come,” she said.
THE Western Port Biosphere is a step closer to producing a plan to “protect and enhance biodiversity” across the region for the next 20 years. Seventy participants at a workshop on Friday 3 May included reprentatives from the community, local government and government agencies, including the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, Parks Victoria and Port Phillip and Western Port Catchment Management Authority. The workshop was part of the biosphere’s Growing Connections project to develop a 20-year plan for the region, which includes the municipalities of Mornington Peninsula, Bass Coast, Cardinia, Casey and Frankston. Doug Robinson, a conservation biologist working with Trust For Nature, outlined his experiences and outcomes when planning and
CAFES and restaurants on the Mornington Peninsula are being urged to let diners and customers know if the food they order contains ingredients likely to cause an allergic reaction. Provision of the information is one of the criteria the shire uses for food businesses to be listed in its Best Bites Good Guide. Environmental health officer Peter O’Brien said food allergens must be labelled in accordance with the Food Standards Code and information about eight allergen groups made available to customers on request. “We also encourage that they put symbols or notes on their menus for common allergen groups such as gluten and lactose.” Mr O’Brien said one in 10 babies born in Australia will develop a food allergy and the shire has added allergy awareness as a compulsory part of its Best Bites assessment program for food businesses. “A food allergy is an immune system response to a food protein that the body mistakenly believes is harmful. When a person eats food containing the protein, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, triggering symptoms that can affect a person’s breathing, gastrointestinal tract, skin and/or heart,” he said. Symptoms of food allergy included hives; swelling of the lips, face and eyes; swelling of the tongue; breathing difficulty; abdominal pain; vomiting or a sudden drop in blood pressure. Mr O’Brien said businesses could call the shire for a free CD containing

Sign up to ‘like’ the police POLICE hope Frankston residents will “like” their new Facebook page and help them solve crimes. The force has rolled out the Eyewatch program in the Frankston area after trialling the project in Geelong, Hobsons Bay, Darebin, Yarra Ranges and Brimbank. Eyewatch enables police to list crimes and share information, including showing photographs of missing or wanted people. Acting Deputy Commissioner Stephen Fontana said Eyewatch, backed by Neighbourhood Watch, provided a way for social media to be used by the public to communicate directly with police. “Police can post photos of people who may be able to assist with inquiries into investigations in the hope that members of the community will recognise them and police can also analyse any intelligence collected on the page and take action,” Mr Fontana said. Transit Safety Police have been using an Eyewatch page on Facebook since February last year with information provided leading to the arrest of
two people for criminal damage on the Frankston line in August 2012. Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells said social media can help residents make their communities safer. “A number of crimes have been solved as a direct result of information gained from the public through Eyewatch,” he said. Frankston police will also use its Eyewatch page on Facebook to give details about alleged crimes. Rumours about crimes that have not occurred
are often spread online via social media including Facebook, creating unnecessary fear in the community. Acting Senior Sergeant Danny Dobell used the Eyewatch page on 7 May to confirm “rumours of a possible abduction” in Langwarrin were false. The police air wing was helping ground crews searching for a missing person, who was eventually found. View the Eyewatch Frankston area page at www.facebook.com/eyewatch frankstonpsa Neil Walker
Coffee time: Wally Rachid has signed his Coffee King cafe up to the Suspended Coffee movement.
Coffee is something to ‘shout’ about
Champion riders RIDERS from Hastings and Balnarring were part of a three-person team that won this year’s Pony Club Association Victoria’s grade 3 dressage championships. Jessica Laughlin of Hastings Pony Club riding Sharinga Silkn Satin, Katie Slocombe of Balnarring Pony Club on George and Jocelyn Martin of Dingley Pony Club on Acacia Park Picasso won the event for Southern Metropolitan Zone at Yarrambat Pony Club. The three riders and their horses, from left, Katie Slocombe, Jocelyn Martin and Jessica Laughlin, with Sue Muirhead, centre, represented the Southern Metropolitan Zone.
THREE cafes in Hastings have joined the Suspended Coffee movement. The cafes invite customers when buying a coffee for themselves, to buy another to go on hold for someone in need. The movement is also known as “pay it forward”. Suspended Coffee began in Italy and has been spread around the world through social media. Suspended Coffees Melbourne now has 36 cafes listed, with more coming in daily. In Hastings Ebony and Ivory, 59 High St; Coffee King, 75 High Street, and Moo’z, 28 Victoria St, already have receipts in their Suspended Coffee jars. Posters have gone to local businesses seeking support from
staff members and to agencies such as Hastings police, Community Information Service and Community Health Centre for referrals. Business owners say they know who among their customers are in genuine need. Pam at Moo’z already had a list of coffees bought by generous customers for others. The system is not likely to be abused, as any cafés not passing on the prepaid hot drinks can be ‘outed’ on social media with customers checking regularly. Suspended Coffees are an ideal way for people who may not have the ability to be more generous, to help others for about $3.50. For more information: www. suspendedcoffeemelbourne.com Fran Henke
Ceremonies, films mark reconciliation MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire is holding a community dinner including an Aboriginal smoking ceremony, dancing and didgeridoo playing as part of its lead-in to this year’s National Reconciliation Week. The dinner will be part of Mornington Peninsula Shire’s 27 May meeting and follows a talk by Dolphin Research Institute executive director Jeff Weir and an “update” on The Briars Park management plan. The smoking ceremony will be performed by the shire’s Aboriginal cultural heritage officer Adam Magennis with a traditional welcome from Boon Wurrung elder Carolyn Briggs. Djarren Wilson-Blow and friends will play didgeridoo and dance. The night at New Peninsula Church in Craigie Rd, Mt Martha, will also hear from former councillor Brian Stahl, who last year was awarded the Tjaegan Wilson-Blow Award for having worked toward reconciliation

on the peninsula. This year’s award will be presented in July during NAIDOC Week. The mayor, Cr Lynn Bowden, said council adopted its commitment to reconciliation in 2008 and organised events and activities such as council presentations, film screenings, NAIDOC Week activities and flagraising ceremonies to raise awareness of Aboriginal culture. Anyone wanting to attend the dinner can call Kylie Osborne on 5950 1137. Three days after the dinner, the shire will launch and screen a documentary about Ms Briggs by Mt Eliza filmmaker Tim Purdie. In Womindjeka, Ms Briggs tells about her connection with country. The Recognising Reconciliation night will also feature a screening of Bush Law, a documentary on Aboriginal and mainstream law working together to reduce crime. It was produced by Danielle Loy. There will be indigenous arts and

Womindjeka came after meeting Ms Briggs. “I was mesmerised by her storytelling. She shared with me some of the indigenous history of the Mornington Peninsula, an area where I grew up and now live,” he said. “It left me questioning why this was
the first time I had heard these stories. I felt that it was important that they continue to be told and shared.” Celebrating Reconciliation starts at 5.30 on Thursday 30 May at the shire’s Mornington office. Entry by gold coin donation or call 5950 1685.

Western Port News 14 May 2013
100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Miss Joyes qualifies as a teacher and planning for Empire Day celebrations Compiled by Matt Vowell From the pages of the Mornington Standard, May 17th 1913. AS announced in our advertising columns, the Deaf, Dumb & Blind Entertainers intend visiting this district shortly, and will give entertainments at Somerville, Flinders, Balnarring, Hastings, Mornington, Dromana, Tyabb, and Frankston on May 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 21, and 27 respectively, and as most of us are already acquainted with this unique and talented Company, something good may be expected. Mr Tainsh, an old favourite, will be heard in some of his best items, whilst his illustrated songs are always a feature of the programme, especially “The Fireman,” with moving picture illustrations. Mr Anderson, a master of the violin and piano, will give selections on these instruments, and his musical sketch, showing what can be done with the piano in case of emergency, is in itself worth the price of admission. As is usual with this company, they keep thoroughly up to date, carrying with them one of the finest bioscopes, and some of the latest films will be exhibited, including modern picture dramas, fascinating picture comedies, industries of the world, and some pleasing comic slides, the star film, “After Fifty Xears,” or “The Golden Wedding,” having been awarded First Prize in the Cinematograph competition. We can heartily recommend this company to the public, not only for the reason that these afflicted are so creditably helping themselves, but on account of the high merit of the entertainment. Mr S. Croad will sing at the Choral Society’s concert to-night. ***
ON Wednesday next, Mr A. H. Gregory and Mr W. Gregory sail in the ‘Canberra’ for Brisbane. Their many friends will wish them a pleasant voyage. *** THE secretary of the Frankston football club acknowledges with thanks the following donations:-Mr Schultz £1 ls, Mr Sage 14s, Dr Maxwell, Mrs Gregory and Mr H. Bray 10s 6d each, Mr S. Sherlock 5s. *** QUITE a stir is caused through the announcement that Australia’s Harry Lauder, Mr Arthur Douglas, will entertain the audience, with his Scottish impersonations at the Mechanics’ Hall to-night. *** MISS M. V. Joyes, of Dromana, who for the past twelve months has been on the temporary staff, has passed the necessary examination, and is now a duly qualified teacher. *** LADIES desirous of joining the dressmaking class organised by Mrs G. Ward, of Mornington, are requested to hand in their names on or before the 20th inst. For full particulars see our advertising columns. *** MERCHANT’S Royal Pictures will be shown in this district during next week on dates as advertised in another column. The proprietor has made arrangements with Spencers’, and a high class programme of pictures will be shown. The star subject next week will he ‘Shamus O’Brien,’ founded upon the famous poem by Samuel Lover. *** MORNINGTON councillors were fa-
vourably impressed with the proposal of Cr Campbell, to erect a dam near his property for a water supply for Mornington. Crs were conveyed to the site in Cr Campbell’s motor before the meeting, and at the meeting Cr Grover asked that his motion be deferred until full particulars of Cr Campbell’s scheme could be obtained. This was agreed to, and Cr Campbell promised to supply all the information possible by next meeting. *** THE death occurred at Frankston on Tuesday last of Jessie Beronice Shave, daughter of Mrs C. O. Shave, of Frankston. The deceased, who was 13 years of age, had been ailing for about a fortnight, and was under the care of Dr Maxwell, but medical skill was of no avail, and she passed away as stated. The burial took place quietly at the Melbourne General Cemetery on Thursday. Wreaths were sent from St. Paul’s Choir, from St. Paul’s Day School, from the State School Scholars and Teachers, from Mrs Shave’s employees, at Webb’s Buildings, Melbourne, and from numerous friends. Mrs Share has the heartfelt sympathy of all the residents in her sad bereavement. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s, Frankston, on Sunday morning next. *** THE Frankston Empire Day celebration committee has accepted with pleasure the offer of Mr J. B. Jolly, of Frankston, of a gold medal annually to be the prize for a championship 100 yards race, open to all boys attending the Frankston State school. The title of champion will be held each year by the winner of this race, and it is expected the competition will be keen.
*** THE President of the Choral Society desires to acknowledge the following donations towards the presentation to Mr W. G. Pettit and Miss Rae Picking:-Mr Hy Masterton £1 1s, Mr G. V Williams 10s, Mr H. Robertson 5s. This presentation will be made at the Choral concert this evening. *** EMPIRE Day celebrations will take place at Frankston on Friday next. In the morning, parents of children attending the local State school, and others, will attend the school and patriotic addresses, songs, etc, will be given. In the afternoon a sports programme for the children has been arranged, and they will be ‘treated’ at a three o’clock tea. Negotiations are also in hand by the committee to try and arrange for a picture show in the hall in the evening, to which the children would be admitted free, but nothing definite in this direction has yet been decided. Given fine weather, a pleasant and instructive day is assured. *** THE proposal to establish refreshment rooms on the Frankston foreshore, which was recently opposed by a deputation of residents, has not received the approval of the Minister of Lands; but a compromise has been suggested. Mr McKenzie visited Frankston on Thursday of last week to look into the matter for himself, and has not reached a decision. In support of the proposal it was urged that the nearest refreshment rooms were situated at some distance from the picnic reserve, and the new establishment would be welcomed by visitors. The council was prepared to grant the application, it was added; but Mr McKenzie cannot
see his way to ratify the proposal. He expresses himself as willing to give permission to erect refreshment rooms on the reserve, and to lease them for three years, but on the understanding that tenders be called for their occupancy. The building is to be at least 100 yards away from the foreshore. *** A MEETING of the Loyal Celebrations League was held in the Mechanics’ Institute, Mornington, on Tuesday evening last. Mr E. Ferber, who presided, said it gave him great pleasure to see such a large and representative gathering of ladies and gentlemen, and after briefly explaining the object of the meeting, business was proceeded with. After a good deal of discussion it was unanimously decided, on the motion of Cr Male and Mr Bates, that King’s Birthday celebrations be held on Monday, 9th June, on the same lines as last year, with a picture show (free to children) in the evening. The amount expended last year was £22, and the treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance of £17 10s 9d. Cr Male, Mr Bates and Mr R. Ford kindly donated £1 1s each, making a grand total of £20 13s 9d. The following collectors were then appointed:-Cr Male, Moorooduc; Mr Sherlock, Osborne; Cr Stephens, Mount Eliza; and Cr Alston and Mr Biles, Mornington. Sports committeeMessrs Jenkins, Cavil. McArthur, Harrap, Male, Crosbie and Dickenson. Refreshments were, as usual, left in the capable hands of the ladies. After a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, proposed by Mr J. E. Jones, the meeting adjourned till Tuesday, 27th inst.

Performance DURING the 1990s, Canadianborn Wendy Matthews was hailed as one of Australia’s finest singers with extraordinary crystal clear vocals which also displayed a hint of soulfulness. Two thousand and thirteen looks set to be an exciting year. It marks the beginning of a new era for Wendy Matthews the singer/songwriter with a new recording deal with Fanfare Records and her new album The Welcome Fire, (her first album of all original material in 12 years) which is due for an August release. This time Wendy has written or co-written every track on the album, a first for her. Other writers include Josh Pyke, Megan Washington, Mark Sholtez, Rod McCormick, John Castle, Kim Richey, Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci. The Welcome Fire is produced by John Castle of Megan Washington, The Cat Empire, The Drones and Dan Parsons fame. There are few artists in Australia that can come close to Wendy Matthews and her stunning credentials; seven Arias, a massive 19 singles, seven top-selling albums and most of all the love of her fans. Her career-defining album Lily sold more than 500,000 copies and more than 300,000 singles of her now signature song Day You Went Away when released in the mid-90s. Wendy says of the signing: “I’ve had the luxury of taking a couple of years to write with some fantastic and diverse people for the first original album for me in 12 years, so I’m thrilled to have found a home with the Fanfare label. The last record was on my own little label and I learned much but this feels like a true partnership and an exciting and new way of doing things.” As an artist she has an expressive voice that never fails to move those who hear it. Her music is an unhurried journey of clean melodies, infectious energy and simple grace. In an age when grunge is thought
to be hip and cynicism an attribute, Wendy has proven that commitment to beauty is still not only valid but applauded by the public ear. This is exemplified by the fact Wendy’s music is now in more than a million Australian homes – all her albums have multi-platinum status. She has an immense talent and capacity to capture and define a diverse range of styles in her music. She takes songs from every genre and makes them her own, from jazz to blues, from rock to gospel, from soul to outright infectious pop and then, of course, there are the beautiful ballads Born in Montreal, Canada, Wendy joined her first band and left home as a teenager, busking her way across the USA to Los Angeles where she met Glenn Shorrock who invited her to tour with him in Australia in 1982. She immediately became an indemand session singer, appearing on many commercial jingles and backing vocals for the likes of The Models Out of Mind Out of Sight and became a semi-permanent member of the band. She also sang on albums by Jimmy Barnes, Tim Finn, Richard Clapton and Icehouse. In 1987, Wendy collaborated with Kate Ceberano on the ABC-TV soundtrack for the series Stringer. You’ve Always Got the Blues was
released the next year reaching the Top 5 national charts. She then contributed to the Rockmelons and Peter Blakeley’s respective albums. She helped form Absent Friends and sang on the number one hit Don’t Wanna Be With Nobody But You and the album Here’s Looking Up Your Address. To support The Welcome Fire Wendy will embark on an extensive promotion tour followed by a national concert tour 2013/2014. www.wendymatthews.com *** THIS spring will see another chapter unfold in the life of Wings, the UK rock group formed by Sir Paul McCartney after the break-up of The Beatles and one of the most successful bands ever created. For the first time a DVD will be released of the live concert film Rockshow which was shot in 1975 and 1976 when Paul McCartney and Wings undertook the epic Wings over the World tour which was the largest-scale tour they would ever undertake as a band. Packed with all the classic Wings hits, plus some of The Beatles’ and Paul’s solo classics – the film is released on DVD and Blu-ray formats. Although filmed on this tour at the enormous Kingdome in Seattle, Rockshow, originally a cut
down version of the concert, was not premiered until November 1980 in New York and April 1981 in London. It was originally released on Betamax (later on laser disc) but it’s only now that the complete full-length concert is being made available fully restored from the original 35mm film and with restored and remastered sound, including a 5.1 mix for the first time. Wings are one of the most successful acts the UK has ever produced, achieving 14 US Top 10 hits and 12 Top 10 hits at home, including Mull of Kintyre which with more than two million sales remains the biggest-selling non-charity single of all time over their 10-year career. Rockshow (Shock), the documentary of the band’s Wing’s Over the World will be available on DVD & Blu Ray 10 June. www.shock.com.au www. paulmccartney.com *** PAUL Dainty, chairman of Dainty Group has announced dates for the Australian leg of the Bon Jovi Because We Can – The Tour which kicks off in Melbourne on Saturday 7 December at Etihad Stadium.Tickets for the Australian tour will go on sale on Monday 20 May at noon. Ensuring there is something for every fan, Bon Jovi is offering a range of tickets starting at $35 (plus transaction and credit card charges where applicable). Tickets can be purchased from www.ticketmaster.com.au In this spectacular new show fans will be treated to an unforgettable night of Bon Jovi’s huge arsenal of hits, as well as new tracks from the band’s latest album What About Now which debuted at No1 on the Australian charts. The new video for the single What about Now can be viewed here http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=S-88lY2GlxE. *** Dirty Farmer’s Daughter is the latest single from the acclaimed Hunter Valley raised, Nashville-based singersongwriter, Kirsty Akers.
By Gary Turner Already a popular playlist addition to Dallas’ KHYI the Range (America’s highest rating Americana station) the song is accompanied by a provocative and stylishly intense video which was directed, edited and produced by the talented songstress. “This song is my favourite to perform off the album,” says Kirsty. “It has a lot of dynamics, both vocally and melodically. I am a really big fan of shows like American Horror Story and True Blood and one of the things I love are their sound tracks. The music is really rootsy and dark so that probably influenced me a little with this song.” Described as “one of the rising stars of the Americana scene” Kirsty recently performed for the cast and crew of the Golden Globe nominated TV show Nashville. She returns to Australia in late June for a series of shows including the Broadbeach Country Festival and The Gympie Muster. www.kirstyleeakers.com Top 10 Albums 1. The meaning of existence (and other short stories)
Mr Man and Superman: Battles of an Ubermensch By Stuart McCullough SUPERMAN, Spider-Man, Batman: they meant nothing to me. As for the likes of Iron Man, the Green Lantern or Daredevil – I could trip over them in the frozen food aisle at the supermarket and still not recognise them, in spite of the costumes. I realise that superheroes are all the rage right now. Indeed, I wouldn’t be surprised if the sequel to Best Exotic Marigold Hotel starred Thor. Barely a movie goes by without some preposterous champion strapping on some totally outrageous duds with the inevitable promise to combat evil. There’s something a little clichéd about superheroes. For the most part, they’re reluctant to nail their colours to the mast and insist on cowering behind an alternate identity. It’s as though they were invented by the witness protection program. It’s a convention that suggests a heroic identity can emerge precisely when the need arises. It’s little wonder that most of the decent superheroes were invented during World War II. Not that they don’t have their problems. Almost invariably, heroes are deeply flawed individuals who harbor a tragic past. This may include being orphaned (as with Batman, Spider-Man and
Superman) or, in the case of the Green Lantern, the indignity of having been portrayed by Ryan Reynolds. Also, to be a decent superhero you’ve got to have a point of weakness. There’s little point being invulnerable – it would make the contest with super villains hardly worth watching. The Man of Steel is hopeless against Kryptonite, although it always seemed
a bit odd that he should be allergic to his home planet. Aquaman can’t be out of the water for more than an hour which is probably fair enough. The Green Lantern, oddly enough, has an aversion to the colour yellow. Which means he could, if push came to shove, be taken down by one of the Wiggles. As for Wonder Twins Zan and Jayna, their key weakness was simply the fact that they were incredibly annoying. That and the fact they had a monkey called ‘Gleek’. With the exception of Superman who is powerful on account of being an alien, there’s almost always some weird story about how they came to get their particular power. SpiderMan got his abilities after being bitten by a radioactive arachnid and the Flash inhaled hard water vapors, whereas Captain America chose a more contemporary path by simply opting for performance enhancing drugs (although they politely called it a ‘serum’). Rightly or wrongly, I’ve always struggled to take these guys seriously. Maybe it’s the whole underwear on the outside thing – which never really denoted special powers to me so much as it did special needs – or perhaps I just couldn’t find it in
myself to identify with them. Forget your Justice League, X-Men or Super Friends, my heart belonged to another group of less celebrated super beings who defined my childhood namely, Roger Hargreaves’ Mr Men. These guys always resonated with me in a far more profound way. For starters, they never mucked around with secret identities. Better yet, their strengths and weaknesses were nearly always declared in their names. Mr Greedy, Mr Nosey and Mr Mean were all exactly as their monikers suggested. The moment you picked up a copy of Mr Fussy, Mr Happy or Mr Sneeze, you had a pretty good idea of what you were dealing with. The inhabitants of Misterland have the kind of powers that ordinary folk can aspire to. For example, the power of extreme rudeness (as in the case of Mr Fussy), the ability to tell a joke (Mr Funny) or the overwhelming need to be punctual. Granted, there may be a case for arguing that Mr Rush’s insatiable desire to be on time means that he would, by today’s standards, be diagnosed as suffering obsessive compulsive disorder. The point is this: I will never be faster than a speeding bullet, nor will I leap tall buildings in a single bound but, like Mr Daydream,
I can certainly tune out when the mood strikes me. In a market cluttered with superhero movies, one group is yet to get the Hollywood treatment they so obviously deserve. Indeed, there’s no time like the present for producers to start lobbing fistfuls of cash at a big screen adaptation of the Mr Men series. But with so any to choose from, where to begin? The answer is obvious. Mr Messy – the Movie would be the kind of blockbuster that has people queuing up around the block. It would be so great a spectacle that spotted teenagers would refrain from illegally downloading it and shell out their parent’s hard-earned money to see it. I see Nicholas Cage as Mr Messy. Only he can properly bring to life the tortured psyche of the character. As is the way with such films, it would be a journey into darkness. Horribly disfigured in a laboratory accident, our hero is transformed into little more than a pink squiggle who fights crime. Or, if not crime, then at least the urge to tidy up. That I can relate to. Perhaps by refusing to bow to convention and not being neat and tidy, Mr Messy is doing something truly heroic. Shazam! www.stuartmccullough.com

Pies account for Demons, get 2013 back on track NEPEAN LEAGUE By Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly IT’S game-on for a spot in the top five in Nepean League. Just three rounds ago, results appeared to show that the five was set with Sorrento, Frankston Bombers, Dromana, Rosebud and Rye. Fast forward three rounds and the race is on. Rye now looks to be in serious danger of losing touch with the top five after going down to Crib Point in Round Six of Nepean League football on Saturday. After getting away to a solid start this season, winning two of its first three games, the Demons have now lost three on the trot and have slid out of the top five. Over the next two weeks, Rye has matches against Sorrento and Dromana. Even at their best, the Demons cannot beat either of these teams. On Saturday against the Magpies, inaccuracy in front of goals cost them dearly. The home side booted 1.8 in the third term to Crib Point’s 3.5, allowing the Magpies a three point buffer at the final change. In the last quarter, Crib Point proved too strong, winning 15.14–104 to 12.21–93. While Rye’s season seems to have gone off the rails, Crib Point is back in the hunt for a spot in the five. Pies coach Dave Lawson was exceptional on Saturday with five goals while Luke Herrington (four goals) and Jon Flack (three goals) were at their best yet again. Lawson told Mornington Peninsula News Group last week that his team’s season would be well and truly back on track should it knock over Rye. In successive weeks now the Pies have knocked over Rosebud and Rye; two finals aspirants. With Devon Meadows and Somerville in two of its next three games, the Pies can really consolidate. It also has Frankston Bombers in Round 8, which will be timely given they will want to test their good form against a top side. Waide Symes continues to be a standout for the Pies while Matt Jackson played his best game for the seasono after a breakout year in 2012. Rye’s leaders in Rhett Sutton and Leigh Morse were great contributors for their side while Darren Booth and Matt Sibberas continued their excellent form. Devon Meadows won its first game of the season when it overcame a poor second quarter to beat Somerville. Playing in ideal conditions at Glover Reserve, the Panthers and Eagles went toe to toe in the opening quarter with six goals each. However, with the wind in the second term, the Eagles booted seven goals to three and opened up a 21 point lead. The second half was a cracker. Through the likes of Callum O’Hare, Ash Adams, Daniel Watson and Steve McInnes through the middle, Alex Doria, Andrew Oldmeadow and Pat Harmes down back and Troy Aust and Heath Black in attack, the Panthers were able to respond with the aid of a two-goal breeze in the third term. The home side booted five goals to none for the quarter and edged in front by 10 points at the final change.

The last quarter was a thriller. Somerville booted the first goal to reduce the margin to three points before Troy Aust, who finished the afternoon with four goals, extended the margin back to 10 points at the 17 minute mark. With 13 seconds on the clock, the Eagles reduced the margin to three points. The Eagles then got the clearance and kicked it to full forward, only for the siren to sound one second before Luke Rowe took the mark 20 metres in front. The final score was 15.14–104 to 15.11–101. Understandably, the Panthers were thrilled with their first win of the season. Justin Farrelly was clearly the Eagles’ best, while Caleb Cox, Jed Sutton, Ben Sedgewick and Paul McDonald were very good across four quarters. Sorrento’s Leigh Poholke booted nine goals in the second half against Tyabb and finished with 10 for the afternoon in his side’s 119-point win. Just four goals separated the sides at half time after the Yabbies really put up a fight against the ladder leaders. However, the Sharks kicked eight goals in the third quarter and another 12 in the last to crush the opposition, 28.14–182 to 10.3–63. Steve Baker and James Hallahan booted three each for the Sharks while Kayle Stringer-Morris continued his purple patch of form. Ryan Jeffrey and Scott Cameron also dominated in the big men department for the visitors. The only blight for the winners was the hamstring strain to Ben Schwarze, who came from the field early in the opening quarter. Matty Dimkos was back and firing for the Yabbies, Ash Waterstone booted three goals and Steve Conlan and Nick Waterstone also tried hard throughout. Dromana got the job done against Rosebud on Saturday at Olympic
Park, winning by 33 points, 18.12–120 to 13.9–87. After back-to-back 100-point plus wins, this was always going to be a test for the Tigers to see how they would respond to better opposition. After a tight first quarter, the Tigers were able to give the opposition the slip in the second term and set-up the win with an eight goal to three term. This was the difference in the end, Rosebud going goal for goal with Dromana after half time. Toby Banks booted four goals for the Tigers while Daniel Waddell, Anthony Bruhn and Dan Gormley booted three goals each. Matt Neratzoglou was sensational down back for the Tigers, as was Shaun Clarke. Terry Wheeler provided plenty of run on the open spaces of Olympic Park. Matty Payne and Greg Bentley were stand-outs for the ’Buds while Sam Krumeich is having a wonderful season playing down back. Despite the loss, the ’Buds maintained their position in the top five. Frankston Bombers remain undefeated, beating Hastings by just 11 points. The Blues went into the game mixing things up from what we have seen in the first five rounds. As a result, the home side played with more spirit and passion and some of the moves clearly paid off. Colin McVeigh was sent forward against one of the best defences in the competition and responded with eight goals in a near best on ground display. Kain Stratton had a run-with role through the middle and he was exceptional while Daniel Wishart played his best game for the season. At the end of the afternoon, however, the Blues did go down 14.14–98 to 16.13–109. The Bombers always had the answers, largely due to the form of Jay Reynolds, who finished the afternoon with four goals. He was exceptional,

while coach Duncan Proud and Nathan Lonie really led from the front. The third quarter was the game breaker, when the Frankston Bombers booted four goals to two to open up a match winning 25 point lead. In the final game, Pearcedale consolidated its place in the five with a hard fought six goal win over Red Hill, 15.11–101 to 8.17–65. Again, it was the third quarter that proved to be the difference in the match. Trailing by five points at half time
after Red Hill squandered a lot of opportunity in front of goals (3.9 to 2.2), the Dales came-out in the third and kicked 8.2 to 1.2 to seal the match. Pat Heijden kicked seven for the winners to give him 28 for the season while Pat Cadd, Dean Janssen and Adam Avard dominated through the middle of the ground. Luke Murray and Matt Smith gave plenty of drive from the back half. Jake Mitchell and Ben Black were among the best for the Hillmen.

Stonecats continue their roll with a 10 goal win over Tigers PENINSULA LEAGUE By Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly FOR many years, we have been longing for an even competition in Peninsula League. Every year, it seems the final five is set before the first ball is bounced for the season. That isn’t the case in season 2013. While Frankston YCW is still proving to be the benchmark, undefeated and two games clear on top of the ladder, the competition is wideopen, from second place Bonbeach to eighth place Mt Eliza. YCW coach Tony Barry told Mornington Peninsula News Group that he was surprised that his side was still undefeated. “Our personnel changed a lot in the pre-season and we went into 2013 without more than half a dozen of our premiership players from the year before,” Barry said. “With opposition sides recruiting well over the pre-season, I didn’t expect to be in the position we are in.” However, after six rounds of footy, the Stonecats are yet to be beaten. Remembering that their reserves won the flag last season and the under–18s were a force, there is a winning culture at the Stonecats. There is also an expectation that all players learn the game-plan that is implemented by Barry and his assistants. “Every player in the senior club is well aware of the style of play we adopt and that includes the under–18s. It is important for them to understand the way we play our football and when they get their opportunity, and they
will, we want them to fit straight in and not feel lost,” Barry said. YCW always has a senior player coach the under–18s, which assists in that transition. It’s much like the culture at Geelong in the AFL. Football followers revel in the ability of the inexperienced players at the Cats to make the jump and fit right in. No different at YCW. On Saturday, Frankston YCW was thrown another big challenge against Seaford, who had won four on the trot. Tigers coach Craig McIndoe said his side was looking forward to the challenge. “We come into the match in good form and I think we’ll enjoy the wide open spaces of Jubilee Park,” McIndoe said prior to the match. By Saturday night, the Stonecats had completely dominated the Tigers and whipped them by more than 10 goals, 17.24–126 to 9.8–62. Thankfully the home side was wayward in front of goal, or the result would have been a lot worse. Again, a fascinating result. It was boys against men stuff in the second half and although starting OK, the Tigers just couldn’t sustain the pressure in the second hour. The Stonecats have done this a number of times this season. Mornington went toe–to–toe for a while but couldn’t keep it up and Bonbeach did the same. YCW shared the load again, 10 players kicking goals. Kyle Hutchison the best of them with three, while Scott Macleod played his best game since crossing from Chelsea. Byron Barry and Riley Hodson were also first rate. Tom Shaw booted four for the Tigers
while Aaron Turner was his team’s best player. Chelsea came from eight goals down at one stage in the second quarter to beat Langwarrin by four points in a thriller, 13.9–87 to 12.11–83. The home side led by 38 points at quarter–time kicking with the aid of the breeze, however, the Gulls got back into the contest with the last four goals of the second–quarter to reduce the deficit to just 24 points. Langwarrin, with the aid of Dan Wehner through the middle and Aaron Shaw up front with four goals, was able to maintain the break in the third and go to the final change with a 26-point buffer. However, led by skipper Ryan Stewart, Richard Jaroszczuk, the young and exciting talent of Toddy Gardener, the work rate of Ryan Dyer and ruck work of Jack Gaze to give his teammates first use, the Gulls were able to storm back in the last quarter, booting five goals to three behinds and snatch victory. There were emotional scenes after the match for the Gulls, who lost their first five games of the season. We are also talking about a club that lost 16 of its best 22 players in the offseason, including the likes of Gary and Sam Carpenter, Steve Harrison, Anthony Lewis, Luke Damon, Nigel Carmody, Luke Stokell, Scott Macleod and Chris Worner. It’s been tough going for new coach Paul Carbis. “I was appointed late in proceedings and I guess the rumour–mill got around that this player was leaving and that player was leaving,” said Carbis.
“When it got time for me to start talking to players to see what their intentions were for the season, they had already made up their mind that they were leaving. “We obviously needed to get some recruits, which we were able to do late, however this year was always going to be about getting games into the kids and trying to remain competitive. “I think every week we get better and as long as there is continued improvement from individuals and teams, then I’ll be happy.” After three straight losses, Edithvale-Aspendale was able to bounce back and take a big scalp in Karingal. The Eagles have struggled in recent times, especially with the lack of height up forward with the loss of Matt Kremmer. With him back in the side, it was always going to assist the likes of Brad Tagg and Brent Bowden. Having the three-pronged attack up– front was going to challenge the Bulls’ defence. It proved to be the case with Kremmer kicking four goals and Bowden and Tagg two each as the Eagles steam–rolled the Bulls 16.15– 111 to 10.7–67. Edithvale is now just nine percent out of fourth place. Jeremy Heys continued his superb season while Nick Connellan was again a general in defence. Michael Burke with five goals was clearly Karingal’s best. Pines maintained its touch with the top five with a strong four-quarter performance against Mt Eliza, winning 13.14–92 to 10.10–70. The Pythons led by eight points
at quarter time, trailed by a goal at the major interval and stretched the margin to 16 points at three–quarter time. Anthony Craddock was a surprise packet in attack with three goals while Beau Hendry once again announced that he is one of the most important big men in the caper. His work in the middle with skipper Jamie Messina, who booted two goals, is worth going to the footy to watch. Josh Norman and Rick D’Orazio were among the best for the Redlegs, along with skipper Jimmy Clayton and Sam Gill. Bonbeach and Mornington was expected to be a sensational game of football and it lived up to all the hype. These two sides will feature prominently come finals time and we got a taste of it on Saturday. The Dogs opened in sensational fashion and looked to white–wash the home side in the first quarter with five goals to none in the first 30 minutes. The Sharks bounced back in the second to get within five points at half–time, before the Dogs kicked away again with the wind in the third to lead by 10 points at the final change. With the likes of Jason Gumbleton, Shaun Foster up front with four goals, Shane McDonald and Matt Batten working tirelessly in the final term, the Sharks were able to come from behind and record a 15-point victory, 13.14– 92 to 11.11–77. Kallum Searle and Adrian Speedy with three goals were the best of the Doggies, while Warwick Miller and Anthony Simpson were also able to perform well.
Strong second quarter gives Dromana a five goal win By Casey Franklin Last Saturday in front of a packed house Dromana fended off a spirited Rosebud outfit. On paper this was the match of the round with 3rd placed Dromana and 4th placed Rosebud each vying for a top two spot. Rosebud came flying out of the blocks with captain Ryan Spooner kicking a goal in the opening minute. Rosebud continued to attack but Dromana’s defence kept them to two goals by the 20 minute mark. It was then the Tigers broke through to score two late goals, the latter was from a Matt Neratzoglou contested mark in the goal square. The margin was tied at two goals four at quarter time, Matt Payne and Brenton Payne were Rosebud’s best and Daniel Gormely was the Tigers’ best. In the second quarter Dromana significantly lifted their intensity and got their game plan flowing and their players found plenty of space through the midfield. Early on the lead changed three times, but at the eight minute Dromana opened the flood gates kicking six of the next seven goals, Anthony Bruhn was vital kicking three of them. The highlight of the quarter was a coast to coast goal from Dromana which resulted in a simple goal to Daniel Waddell. It wasn’t all sweet for the Tigers though, Jarrad Wood went off late in the half and sat the remainder of the match out with a heavily iced ankle. Dromana’s backline resembled a brick wall, no matter how many inside 50s Rosebud had, their defence through discipline and team work continued to restrict the Rosebud forwards for a high percentage of the match. The second half the Buds needed to respond and despite looking overwhelmed by the Tigers they really got themselves back into the game. Greg Bentley opened the half
with a 50 metre bomb to bring the margin back to four goals. For the remainder of the quarter it was a very high scoring and level contest with both sides kicking five goals a piece . Tigers small forward Toby Banks was lively kicking and setting up his fair share of goals and Daniel Gormley was a force to be reckoned with, for the Buds Matthew Baker and Jackson McRae were best that quarter. With the margin at a healthy five goals in favour of Dromana, the Tigers would be expecting to run away with the game. It did look that way when Daniel Waddell kicked an easy goal to take the margin out to 36 points. However the home side with the support of the crowd got themselves back into the game with three quick goals. The Tigers seemed to be fatigued and if it wasn’t for their backline, Rosebud would have steamrolled them. With six minutes to go Rosebud’s Aaron Rose snapped a goal out of the pack to bring the margin back to 13 points. Eventually Dromana proved what a class act they are by kicking the last three goals of the game from their stars Daniel Gormley and Toby Banks. Final score: Rosebud 13.9.87 def by Dromana 18.12.120. Best: Rosebud: M Payne, Krumeich, Bentley, B Payne Dromana: Gormley, Banks, S Clarke, Waddell, Bruhn, M Neratzoglou Goals: Rosebud: Spooner 3, Rose 2, Schultz 2, McRae 2, M Payne 1, Dew 1, Stephens 1, Bentley 1 Dromana: Banks 4, Waddell 3, Bruhn 3, Gormley 3, Slocombe 2, M Neratzoglou 2, Minchington 1
Hastings hosted the Bombshells: Both teams were splashed in pink raising awareness and much
needed funds for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. C grade was goal for goal in the first quarter, Bombshells leading by two goals at the first break. After a good talking too by coach Tanie Stickland the Blueys came out firing and took hold of the match lead by great defence pressure on the ring by Zara Haycroft and accurate shooting by Tash Green. Blueys defeated Bombshells 24-16. B grade saw Tanie Stickland making her debut against old club Frankston. Ash Lowe stepped into the Centre and provided the Blueys with much needed direction. The goaling combination of Tanie Stickland and Amy Goodacre were again on song, the girls accurate from all over the ring to secure the win. 47-41. HFNC raised just over $1500 for BCNA. Hastings Football Club – the earliest years By Lance Hodgins Part two IN 1892 the lights were dimmed on peninsula football before the season had really begun. Annual general meetings had been held, office bearers elected, and hopes were high for the various clubs across the county. By May, practice games were in full swing. Mornington even played the breakaway Rovers team in a contest that seemed more like a friendly scratch match. After its win, the Mornington Club arranged to play at Mordialloc on 21 May. For something different, the players voted to travel by sea on board a teammate’s nine-metre fishing yawl. The match ended in a draw. It was about 5.30pm and nearly dark, so within half an hour the boat was ready to leave for the two-hour journey home. Near Pelican Reef, barely seven kilometres from home, it was hit by a sudden squall which either broke its mast or snapped the halyard which dropped the sail. Since most of the men were sitting to one side as ballast, the boat capsized in seconds. Men scrambled in sudden confusion in the dark, cold water. Many tried to get rid of their clothes and swim for shore. In the light of day the boat was finally found and towed to shore. Scratches on the hull told a terrifying story of the desperate efforts of drowning men. When the stricken vessel was righted by the waiting crowd, it yielded the body of one lad – partially clad, intertwined with the rigging. Only three other bodies were found, washed ashore a week later. Among the lost were three sons of the Presbyterian minister, Rev Caldwell. Four of the victims were married men with young families. The stricken town was referred to as “Mourningtown” and locals wondered if they would ever recover. The entire football community on the peninsula, and indeed the nation, was in mourning. The following Sunday, Hastings players gathered in the Holy Trinity Church where Rev Greenwood conducted a funeral service in memory of the victims, many of whom were family, friends or simply sporting rivals. Eventually, they would have to take the field for the 1892 season and their opening game was at Somerville. Playing shorthanded, the locals were no match for a strong Hastings side. Watson, Devlin, Jones and Sheehey played well and Hastings ran away easy victors 5-5 to 0-6. A month later Somerville struggled to field a team for its return match. Similar travel difficulties were experienced by Cranbourne who, after beating Hastings at home, couldn’t muster a team willing to travel to the Blues for a return match. The following week, Hastings brought about Dromana’s first downfall of the 1892 season in a three goals to one win on neutral ground at Balnarring. A fortnight later the Blues at home thrashed a hapless Frankston team. Players and supporters alike wondered whether they had found the secret to football success. Many had played in the Battery Minstrel troupe at Flinders the night before, and the genial host of the Flinders Hotel had done all in his power to make them comfortable afterwards. Those playing football travelled all night in the pouring rain to arrive home at 5am. Of course, Frankston had a ready excuse in the condition of the ground. It was a “veritable mud heap” and the

Frankston lads “could not mark, run or kick, while the locals shone in every department of the game”. In a rough game, Len Devlin was brilliant for Hastings. The score line read Hastings 5-12 Frankston 1-0. Two weeks later, on a beautifully fine September day, Frankston could have their revenge in front of a large crowd at Frankston. In a game that was fast from start to finish, Hastings ran fast and kicked long but they could not control Frankston’s rucks and short passes. Score were level at half time and then, in the third quarter, Hastings ran loose. Devlin goaled, then McKnight, and the Blues were up by two goals at the final change. A quick Frankston goal at the start of the last quarter led to a tidal wave of enthusiasm and the Frankston players poured on four more to win easily 6-10 to 3-8. Best for Hastings were McKnight, Irvine, Sheehey, Devlin, Denham and Watson. After the game there was the usual public dispute in the pages of the press. Frankston objected to the number of Hastings players who had arrived by train from the City, particularly Fred McKnight and “Dug” Irvine, two well-known professionals who also played for South Melbourne’s first 20. Frankston’s high moral ground
was quickly taken away when it was pointed out that those two men were as much members of the Hastings Club as were the three Hastings men who had played for Frankston in the past! A week later Hastings played its final game for 1892 defeating Dromana five goals to two, with Len Devlin kicking three. On the next Saturday night, at a grand dinner given by Mr and Mrs Nolan at their Royal Hotel, club president DJ Ham praised the team on its behaviour and manner of playing and pointed out that it had more right to the premiership than any other team on the peninsula. This position was strongly contested, however, by Frankston. After their defeat, Dromana had added to the chorus against the Hastings “ring-ins” and this drew a sharp response from Hastings’ honorary secretary Daniel Sheehey. “I wish to state that on no occasion has the Hastings Club played with a more local team, every man lived in Hastings with the exception of one who resides in Somerville, is a member of our club, and has played with us from the start of the season”. “I may add that Hastings claims the county premiership, if there is such a thing. Frankston may dispute this, but we have both defeated each other,
and as Frankston declined to arrange another match, they have thus left us victors.” Early in 1893, and in anticipation of another good year for Hastings, Club secretary Sheehey suggested that the clubs of the county should buy a premiership cup for the competition. Two delegates from each club would meet, perhaps at Hastings, to decide upon the rules for the competition. By the end of April, DJ Ham felt that interest in a cup was lagging so he repeated the proposal. The call was for Frankston, Mornington, Dromana, Flinders, Hastings and any other local club to enter, for a fee of two guineas. The cup would become sole property of the season’s winners. A local association would set rules to address the matters of biased umpires, paying of players, and playing men from other clubs. If those rules were broken, sanctions would be imposed. Frankston were only lukewarm to the idea. In a relatively naive statement, it was suggested that they did not want to be bound by a complicated set of “semi-professional” rules and that the relevant captains could surely reach agreement on important points such as player eligibility. Hastings were determined, however, to set the ball rolling and Cr Ham and
Mr John Jones were chosen as their two delegates. Club office bearers were also in place for 1893. DJ Ham was again in the chair but there were some new faces. Vice presidents were Greenwood, Moss, Minnis, Kippe, Heaney, Dowsett and Ingamells. The committee comprised Munday, Sheehey, Watson and Whitehead. The secretary and treasurer was William Jones. For 1893 the Blues’ player list read as Carey (2), Devlin, Cusworth, Denham, Elliott, Ham (2), Harboard, Irvine, Johnson, Jones (2), Kearns, Kerr, W and S Mentiplay, Sposito, Watson, R Davis, F Ingamells, A and T Mentiplay, Noble, Howell and Knox. For the opening match against Frankston clouds had given way to clear by noon. A telegram was received from the Frankston secretary to say that they would not be coming because of the weather. As it was not yet one o’clock, and the Frankston team had been ordered to gather by then, Hastings telegrammed that the weather and ground were both fine for play. The reply simply read “The Frankston team had scattered”. Hastings was incensed. Only last year it had been too wet for the Frankston lads. “We are firmly of the belief that clean booted and kid gloved gentry

WESTERN PORT scoreboard who call themselves footballers are more fitted for parlour games. The sooner the Frankston team eradicate these sort of men from the team the better for themselves. If they expect all sunshine and are afraid of soiling their immaculate ‘rig out’ they are unworthy of the name of footballers and fit to be classed with the dudes of the day”. Hastings ended up playing a scratch game instead, after which John Watson was elected as the season’s captain, a position he had held since the team was formed. The following Saturday Hastings hosted the newly-reformed Mornington team. Both teams were a bit short and three Frankston players appeared in Mornington colours. Down two goals to nil at half time, Hastings looked finished until Devlin (two goals), Sheehey, Kerr, McDonald, Mentiplay, Ham, Watson and Cusworth all lifted their game for a brilliant victory 6-8 to 2-5. The bigger men of Hastings had proven better with the wet ground and slippery ball. The following week Hastings hosted Cranbourne for a big win 17-22 to 1-1. Devlin and Wally Ham each kicked four goals in what was little more than a practice run for the Blues. Frankston now demanded a “senior” umpire before they would travel to Hastings, which the Blues thought an unnecessary expense. The Victorian Football Association was contacted but no reply meant that no city umpire would come. In a casual manner, Frankston arrived late and the full time could not be played. To make matters even worse, a recent downpour had made the ground very sloppy and scientific football was to be out of the question. Woe betide
the player who slid into the fence along the western boundary, as it had barbed wire on it. Hastings won the toss and kicked with the slight breeze. Devlin, Ham and Sheehey bombarded the goals and Hastings led at half time by three goals to one. Frankston grizzled as they slid along the ground and waded through the mud. Their characteristic drop kicks and running plays were impossible. Not even a few fights could turn the game and Hastings ran out victors four goals to one. Best payers were Wally Ham, Devlin, Jack Jones, Kerr, Sheehey, Denham, Cusworth, Mentiplay and Noble. Incidentally, both sides agreed that Hastings’ Jim Jones did a good job as umpire. Mornington at Mornington was played under better conditions and the Blues suffered their first defeat of the season 2-5 to 4-8. In a fast and furious final quarter, with the game tied up at two goals each, Mornington notched two goals in quick succession. As captain of Hastings, John Watson appealed against the first of the two goals but was refused by both the central and goal umpires. Confusion reigned a spectators rushed the ground and mingled with the players. Watson called his men off the ground – an action which lit up controversy for weeks to come. The same field umpire was roundly criticised the following week by Dromana. Mid-season in 1893, Len Devlin, John Watson and Wally Ham were chosen to represent the peninsula in a match against the Richmond first twenty. The city boys were far too fast and accurate and outscored the locals 14 goals to two. Hastings were proud that Devlin and Watson kicked the two peninsula goals.
Hastings journeyed to Cowes for a one-sided practice game. The first boat from Hastings had only eight players and they took the field until they were joined by the other six at half time. Nonetheless the final score had Hastings well ahead 26 goals 9 behinds to nil. The main goal kickers were Ham (5) Devlin and Sheehey (4 each), Cusworth (3) and Jones (2). Hastings had to find substitutes the following week for their match against a good Dromana team at Balnarring. They were without the services of Elliot, McDonald, Johnson and Harboard. Dromana arrived with a full complement and men to spare, but were beaten 3-3 to 1-3. Goals were kicked by Devlin, Knox and Carey. Kerr, who had come over from Dromana at the start of the year, was the man of the match. Rumours circulated that the game against Mornington would have to be played at Somerville or Frankston due to the poor state of the Hastings ground and concern was expressed over the inconvenience of having to travel to a home game in another town. Since many of Hastings’ upcoming matches were to be away games, the club’s meagre resources would be strained. A general meeting considered the financial position of the club and decided to hold a minstrel and variety evening as a fundraiser. A troupe was immediately formed and rehearsals began in earnest. The concert was a resounding success and managed to clear the outstanding debts of the club. The audience loudly applauded the minstrel songs and sketches with DJ Ham as the “centre” and the Jones boys as “corners”. After interval the entertainment was provided by an accomplished musician and singer, Mr W
Wilson, from Melbourne. In the meantime, Hastings played a memorable match at Cranbourne. Two carriages left the Royal Hotel at the early hour of 10 o’clock in order to cope with the sorry state of the roads and still arrive on time. A shorthanded Blues team won handily, five goals to nil. It was a particularly spiteful game, however, made worse by a “howling pack of youthful barrackers” who continually urged the local boys to “plug him” or “lay him out”. The atmosphere was so unpleasant that a return match seemed most unlikely. It was a much friendlier game for the return match with Dromana at Balnarring. With both teams at full strength, the Hastings team surprised themselves with a solid win 9-3 to 1-3. Goals were kicked by Watson, W Carey, Noble, Devlin and D Carey. Best players were John Jones, Devlin, Baker, Kerr, Cusworth and Sheehey. And then, for the first time in its history, the Hastings players were in danger of breaking an engagement. Several footballers were in the Battery and a parade for examination by their colonel clashed with the Mornington match date. A request was made for postponement, to which Mornington agreed, and on the 9 September the two met for their final match of 1893. Devlin played a sterling game with brilliant marking, running and passing, ably supported by Sheehey, Carey and Watson. But they were not enough to prevent a brilliant win for Mornington 7-4 to 0-1. The two teams had played four times in 1893, for two wins each – every win being on a home ground. A fifth game in neutral territory might decide who was best. Frankston saw things differently.
The club had only played four games compared to Hastings’ five and Mornington’s seven. Of these it had won two and drawn one, giving it 10 “premiership” points. Hastings had three wins gave it 12 points. Surely the match between Hastings and Frankston the following week would decide the premiership of the county, winner take all. It was a sadly depleted Hastings team which took the train to Frankston. Eight players had already left the district during the latter part of the season. Several of their best players had been selected to represent the Battery in Sydney and were required for drill that Saturday. A further two or three were notorious absentees from away games anyway and this was to be no exception. Astonishingly only 11 Hastings players made the journey to Frankston to search for substitutes and fight for the premiership. From the outset the result was a predictable win for Frankston 10-9 to 4-5. Devlin’s admirable play showed why he was widely regarded as the best footballer on the peninsula. He was ably assisted by Watson, Jones (2), Kerr, Sposito, Mentiplay and Sheehey. The final thoughts for the 1893 season came from DJ Ham who lamented the inability of the delegates to come together at the start of the season to govern matters such as umpires, local players and game fixtures. “There is not a team in the district which has not had its grievance about some matter. This would have been regulated by an association.” He urged that it was not too late to form a district football association for 1894 which would put an end to the bickering between players and clubs. Third pennant flag to Balnarring lawn bowlers IN one of the hardest fought lawn bowls games ever played on the Mornington Peninsula, Balnarring Bowls Club men’s section won the grand final pennant flag, the third pennant flag the club won in as many weeks. It was a chilly day with light rain at commencement of the game, and the Balnarring men were after a pennant flag, something they had not been able to win for 15-years. Balnarring was leading comfortably up to half time, but in the space of four ends the margin was reduced and it was well and truly game on. Heavy rain fell and the umpires called a brief halt to the game, and on return it was on for young and old. After being a few shots back the Balnarring team skipped by Laurie Grindrod saw the overall score at 25 all. With one end left to play and steady rain falling “Charlie’s Angelsâ€? team skipped by Charlie Burgess came to the fore and Balnarring was only one shot down. Tension was high and progress scores were being phoned to Balnarring club where their recently purchased defibrillator was at the ready in case of heart attacks. At the last end a bowl by the Rosebud skip was a close miss, and then bowls by Balnarring’s Charlie with his usual confidence saw the game over with Balnarring winning by two shots up. Balnarring had won with massive cheers from the many club supporters who attended. A highlight of the match was the youngest and oldest Balnarring players. Braidon Johnson is 13-years old and is the club’s youngest player and with John Dillon who is 82-years old both played a great game. Braidon’s father Adrian is also a Balnarring club coach and an umpire and was very proud of his son’s effort in a pennant grand final. Balnarring men’s section President, Rod Bell congratulated the team on their win saying they had worked hard all season to achieve a much sought after pennant flag. “The teams and selectors must be congratulated on their efforts, but it doesn’t stop there. We will be back again next season looking for yet another pennant flagâ€?, he said. Balnarring Bowls Club always welcomes new members. Young people are welcome to learn as well as older folk and if you would like to learn more about lawn bowls contact Charlie Burgess on 59 83 9794
Celebration as 200 up for Jason By Victor Jeremiah, HFC historian WHEN popular Hastings footballer Jason Kestle ran out on May 4 to play his 200th senior game, he became only the 11th footballer in the history of the club to achieve this milestone. Jason began his football career at the HFC in season 1994 when, as a 10 year old, he became a permanently established youngster of the HFC junior under–12’s. He continued to develop in junior football in the following two years and further progressed in under-16’s in 1997-1998. Season 1999 saw Jason playing in the under18’s competition and midway though year 2000 he was selected by coach Leigh Carpenter for his first game of senior football. He quickly became firmly established at senior level and played every game of the following two years. In season 2006 Jason won the HFC’s “Most consistent player award and also the clubs “Highest goal-kicker award. Further honours came in 2011 when he was chosen to represent the MPNFL Sharks in interleague competition, and also as selected as a member of the Nepean League “Team of the year. Further Nepean League honours were awarded in season 2012. Throughout his entire football career Jason Kestle has proven to be a naturally gifted footballer who can play equally as well at either end of the ground and a classic example of his overall versatility was displayed in his 200th game when playing as a defender, he won the ball, ran half the length of the oval, and kicked an inspirational goal for his team. Over the past 20 years he has also proven to be a respected and valued servant of the HFC with his overall loyalty and commitment having been most admirable. At all times Jason Kestle has conducted himself in a very sportsman like and professional manner and he can feel extremely proud of his latest honour in now becoming a member of the Hastings Football Club 200 Club.

Directory winner: Geoff Neems of Frankston has won the MP News Group Golf Course Directory competition featured in The Times in March. Mr Neems, a keen golfer, said he was over the moon after receiving a call telling him of the win. He won a custom-fitted set of Exotics irons supplied by Centenary Park Golf Course. His clubs are five years old and he was looking at updating them. “The prize has come in very handy, he said. Mr Neems, centre, is with Steve Montgomerie, left, and Warren Young of Centenary Park Golf Course.
