Hastings clean-up POLICE, traders and Mornington Peninsula Shire are joining forces to clean up Hastings. Included in the battle plans is the closure of a troublesome laneway and reinforcements in the ongoing eradication of graffiti. The footpath facing closure runs between Mirabella Court and FrankstonFlinders Rd. Shire officers have spoken to nearby residents about a trial closing of the footpath. “Concerns have been raised about inappropriate behaviour occurring in this Mirabella Court pedestrian link involving vandalism, littering, unauthorised use by motor vehicles on the walkway, noise and general unsociable behaviour,” a news release from the shire said. “As such, Mornington Peninsula Shire is proposing a trial closure via fencing off this pedestrian link to reduce the occurrence of inappropriate behaviour for the affected residents.” Written submissions on the trial closure should be sent to the shire before the 28 June. For details call 5950 1030.

Meanwhile, the fight against graffiti has been given a boost with a $500 donation from Kmart. The money will go towards trial program developed by the shire, Hastings police and Western Port Chamber of Commerce. The program is aimed at reducing graffiti through “key educational messages around graffiti prevention”, the need to report graffiti and “taking pride in your community”. According to the shire the trial program will see local groups pledge to undertake strategies to minimise graffiti, monitor and report instances of graffiti and to maintain a graffiti “hotspot” for a year. Cr David Garnock said anti-graffiti strategies could be also involve a mural, urban landscape or signage. “The program will give local groups an opportunity to develop creative strategies that work towards removing and preventing further graffiti damage at identified locations,” he said. “It is hoped that this will create a sense of ownership and community pride in Hastings.”

‘Bad guy’ teaching the right moves ACTOR Steve Bastoni does a good job of playing a bad guy. A familiar face on both the big and small screen, Bastoni is also an accomplished stage performer. He’s a tough bikie gang leader in Drift, the surf-based movie now showing around town and in upcoming films is going to a United States army colonel and an ex-cop.

His roles are diverse but to the pupils at his Peninsula Acting School, he’s Steve, their famous teacher who can show them how to draw a crowd. Last week he took a surprising role, explaining to a public forum that he was once addicted to gambling. See “Reality a bonus to actor’s sketch” Page 8

Mayor’s subdivision on the market By Mike Hast THE shire’s mayor Cr Lynn Bowden and her husband Ron Bowden have put their five-lot subdivision in Somerville on the market. The proposal required two appeals to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, including last year when a neighbour objected to the position of the lots. Mornington Peninsula Shire had previously refused a permit and Ron Bowden appealed the decision in the tribunal. The subdivided land of about 5.3 hectares (13 acres) is in the triangle formed by Frankston-Flinders and Grant roads. The shire granted a permit to subdivide on 29 December 2011. Four vacant lots are on the market for $440,000 (0.44 hectares, 1.1 acres), $460,000 (0.55 hectares, 1.36 acres), $480,000 (0.73 hectares, 1.8 acres) and $600,000 (1.9 hectares, 4.68 acres). The prices work out to about $360,000 an acre. A price for lot 4 with its four-bedroom house and large shed has not been listed. The Bowdens intend to build a new house facing east on part of their land. The subdivision is called Bowden Rise. Their plan to subdivide was revealed at a candidates’ meeting in Tyabb before the 2008 council election, when Ms Bowden was asked by neighbour Andrew Burdett why she was subdividing in the green wedge zone. The Bowdens’ property is in a low density residential zone but abuts the green wedge zone.

Rise up: A board on Frankston-Flinders Rd, Somerville, advertising the sale of land owned by Mornington Peninsula Shire mayor Cr Lynn Bowden, top right, and her husband, former state MP Ron Bowden, right, pictured at Relay For Life in March.

There is no love lost between the Bowdens and Mr Burdett, son of Bill and Pearl Burdett, founders of the Burdett’s sand, gravel and gardening supplies empire. Andrew Burdett was an objector at the two VCAT hearings in May 2011 and last year. Ron Bowden objected when Mr Burdett wanted to build a house, stables and “associated works”. Lynn Bowden declared a conflict of interest when the matter was before the council and left the council chamber, as she had when Bowden Rise came up at council.

Last year, VCAT upheld the council’s decision over the Bowden subdivision. Mr Burdett had objected to the lot density, configuration and associated building envelopes. The tribunal said there was an “adequate buffer [between] the low density residential zone [the Bowden property] [and] the abutting green wedge zone [the Burdett property]. Shire planner David McPherson reported to the council: “The applicant’s appeal resulted in an amended permit with the deletion of a vehicle access condition.”

Watsons provides town planning, urban design, surveying, civil engineering and project development services for land developers. Advertisements and internet listings

Online care: Emergency nurse Queenie Menchavez using tablet scanner to access her patients’ information at Frankston Hospital.

Emergency leads the digital way FRANKSTON Hospital’s emergency department is the first in Australia to introduce digital e-prescribing and medication management. The hospital is also one of the first health services in Australia to use the National E-Health Transition Authority’s standardised Australian medicines terminology (AMT). The information system uses technology to implement electronic medication management and e-prescribing facilities in the emergency department. It also allows patient information, medications and pharmacy needs to be streamlined into one process.

“The introduction of this new technology means that prescribing is now much more streamlined and eliminates the need for hand written scripts,” clinical director of emergency medicine Dr Helen Hewitt said. “The use of electronic drug charts will enable clinical staff to easily read patient’s medication histories in a much clearer and a more functional format.” Dr Hewitt said clinicians and pharmacists could access and record patient information “at the touch of a button”. The technology was accessible at every bedside with the 39 electronic

devices which included washable keyboard and barcode scanners. The emergency department also had 23 portable workstations equipped with barcode scanners to read identification wristbands. Emergency nurse Queenie Menchavez says the e-prescribing system had made a big difference. “It’s a lot easier now to access and administer patient medications. Everything is simpler to use and only requires a few touches of a button rather than a pile of paperwork.” Frankston is one of three health services in the state trialling the system.

Shire ‘no’ to project delay liability By Keith Platt MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire denies any responsibility for delays and costs associated with a $6 million affordable housing project on contaminated land at Hastings. The shire issued a planning permit for 20 houses to be built at the corner of Marine Parade and Church St but says it was up to the applicant, Low Cost Housing Pty Ltd, to say if there were any problems with the site. “It is incumbent on the permit applicant to submit all information relative to the proposed development including information about the existing conditions of the land in order to allow a full and proper assessment of the planning scheme by council officers,” the shire’s statutory planning manager Angela Hughes said. “The plan submitted to council showing the existing conditions did not show (the alleged) fuel tanks in the ground. “In addition, the planning controls that applied to the site then (and now) did not indicate that the site had previously been used in a way that may have caused contamination.” The land was previously been used as a service station and the remains of fuel tanks and corroded underground metal piping were only discovered after the houses were nearly completed. Workers have been removing old plumbing and contaminated soil from the site. Brett Wake, state manager for Community Housing which owns the houses, said last week that lawyers were investigating if any legal action could

be taken to recover compensation for delays and extra costs faced by the project. Mr Wake told The News on Friday that the shire had contributed $200,000 towards buying the land which was selected as a site for low cost housing by the Frankston Peninsula Carers Group. “We’re just looking at where we stand. We were not around when all that happened [the site was chosen], only after all procedures were in place.” Community Housing had become involved “after council and the carers group had already entered an unconditional contract” to buy the land. “There was no information available about the land’s previous history,” Mr Wake said. He said Community Housing had been given two reports about the property “and we relied on one which, clearly, was not correct”. “We could never get a copy of the first one which was more accurate and we are investigating if we can be compensated.” Ms Hughes said Community Housing “will need to get relevant approvals from the Environment Protection Agency, and potentially through their building surveyor, to deal with the site appropriately”. She said there would be no repercussions for the shire, which issued the permit. “The planning permit was assessed against the planning controls that applied to the site,” Ms Hughes said. “This assessment and our decision to grant a planning permit remains valid,

regardless of what has later been discovered on the site. “There may be repercussions on the developer to do more work to the site to get it to the standard at which the development can proceed and/or occupancy certificates be granted.” Ms Hughes said no action could be taken by the project’s owner “against council under the planning and Environment Act”. Mr Wake said it was hoped the EPA would initially “clear” six of the units at the corner of Church and King streets for occupation.

By Mike Hast THE Johnny Famechon statue project is being revived by the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame president Brett McCormick met Frankston MP Geoff Shaw earlier this month to seek his support. Mr McCormick was accompanied by Johnny Famechon Statue Committee members Rob McCarthy, Gary Luscombe and Arnold Thomas as well as the man himself, world boxing champion Johnny Famechon, who now prefers to be called John. “Fammo” lives in Frankston with his wife Glenys. The champ achieved worldwide fame after his epic title fights with Fighting Harada of Japan.

Born in France in 1945, Fammo has called Frankston home since 1970. He has been actively involved in the community, including helping police run the Frankston Blue Light Boxing Club for young people. He became WBC Featherweight World Champion in 1969 after defeating Cuban Jose Legra on points at Albert Hall in London. He twice defended his crown against Fighting Harada during brutal battles. With a career record of 56 wins (20 by KO), six draws and five losses, Fammo was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in Los Angeles in 1997 and the Frankston Hall of Fame in 2008. The life-sized bronze statue was first

proposed in early 2011 when Rob McCarthy and Sydney sculptor Stephen Glassborow offered Frankston Council the $150,000 statue free of charge. The project lapsed when a report from council officers said it would cost $45,000 to erect “Fammo” at the preferred site in Ballam Park. Councillors decided not to spend more than $10,000. The cost was based on what Baw Baw Shire paid to erect the Glassborow statue of Lionel Rose in his home town of Warragul, which included a granite base (or plinth) and extensive landscaping. Other Glassborow statues include legendary cyclist Sir Hubert Opperman in Rochester, Victoria, and champion footballer John Coleman in Hastings.

Relax with reiki HASTINGS residents are being offered free 15-minute reiki sessions. Trained volunteers offer the traditional Japanese relaxation technique reiki at Hastings Community House on Wednesdays during school terms between 2pm and 4pm. Reiki master Jim Frew said the modern form of reiki originated in Japan about 90 years ago, “but the practice we know today has its origins around 2500 years ago in the cultures of central Asia”. Reiki involves a practitioner’s hands being placed over the head and upper body using light passive touch. “The experience is often deeply relaxing even though the sessions are quite brief and people who maybe find their lives stressful and can’t relax would benefit,” Mr Frew said. A gold coin donation goes towards running the community house. To book a reiki session call 5979 2918 or contact Mr Frew, 5983 9971.

Skate park comp Slow development: The Communitu Housing project at Hastings is facing delays because of soil contaminated when the site was used as a service station.

He said the office of housing within the state Human Services Department had helped finance soil checks. When completed, the “affordable” homes will offer secure long-term rental accommodation to senior citizens, families on low incomes, and people with intellectual and physical disabilities who can live independently with support. Dubbed the “Hastings model”, the project is being built with money from state and federal governments as well as the shire and Frankston Peninsula Carers.

THE South Eastern League skate and BMX competition will be held at the Sorrento skate park on Saturday 1 June. The event is a competition for skaters and BMX riders and includes a free barbecue. It is heat 11 of the series and registrations for BMX are at 11am. The first competition for BMX starts at 11.30am. Skate registrations are at 2pm with the competition starting at 2.30pm. Divisions include 12 and under; 16 and under; open male, and open female. Details: www.skatepark.ymca.org. au

The Famechon statue will be paid for by the sale of 15 maquettes, or statuettes, of the original for $12,000 each. The statue cost has risen to $180,000 since 2011. The statue committee aims to raise the money over the next 12 months by selling maquettes, replicas of the plaque that will be displayed at the base of the statue, and at a fundraising dinner next month. Fammo was badly injured when he was hit by a car wile jogging in Sydney in 1991, sustaining horrific injuries. In 1992 he started a radical and demanding rehabilitation program to improve his acquired brain injury. After three months he took his first steps. He now walks with the help of a

walking stick and his speech and memory have improved. At his Frankston home, Fammo works out for several hours every day to keep his body going. He has also trained with exercise coaches and swims two or three times a week. In June 1997, Fammo walked down the aisle at his wedding to long-time girlfriend Glenys, fulfilling a promise he made to her four years earlier that they would marry but not till he could walk unassisted.  The Johnny Famechon statue fundraising dinner is at 6.30pm on Wednesday 19 June at Frankston RSL. Tickets cost $90 a person and include a threecourse meal and drinks at bar prices. Book with the RSL on 9783 2288.

Flower-inspired island walk UNDETERRED by the rain, 32 members of the French Island Landcare group earlier this month went for a wildflower walk at the former McLeod Prison. The group drove five kilometres past the gates of the former prison to Albions Point on the island’s northeast coast. The first three kilometres of the walk passed through messmate forest and heath where botanists Clive and Fay Gordes pointed out the early orchids in flower: tiny gnat orchids and green hoods that first appear as flowers with leaves following later. Other orchids without flowers were seen as well as three species of springflowering flax lillies (Dianellas). The forest trail ended at a saltmarsh and then a coastal walk led the group to the broad, white sandy beach of Spit Point. The return walk along the coast

to Albions Point passed mangroves, orange cliffs, a small beach and the remains of the jetty and concrete boatshed of John Albion. “Albion got tired of prisoners from McLeod stealing his boat, so he built a sturdy concrete shed with a strong iron gate to keep it in,” Landcare group member Chris Chandler said. “The group was very impressed with the thousands of young mangroves that have grown up along the coast and the untouched nature of this forgotten corner of French Island National Park.” Anyone interested in walks on French Island can call Judith Metcher on 5980 1215 or Chris Chandler, 0407 705 450.

Heritage awards for Merricks House, Crib Point memorial By Mike Hast TWO places in the Western Port region have won gongs at this year’s Mornington Peninsula Heritage Awards. The event was held on Friday evening in the Mornington Park Pavilion, which itself won an award last year. Merricks House at 3460 FrankstonFlinders Rd, Merricks, won one of three awards in the “Creative reuse of a heritage place” category. The former general store, built in 1924, is now a cellar door, bistro and wedding venue. Judy Walsh, president of National Trust’s Mornington Peninsula branch, said the creative re-use category rewarded “owners who have adapted their businesses around the building, retaining the original fabric and appearance”. Crib Point RSL’s war memorial won “Excellence in heritage interpretation” along with Friends of Collins Settlement Centre’s historic site interpretative signs in Sorrento. Ms Walsh said it was pleasing “to receive nominations covering a wide area of the peninsula this year as well as the diverse range of heritage aspects, indicating that people are making heritage considerations in tandem with development and restoration options”. This was the third heritage awards, a joint venture of Mornington Peninsula Shire and the National Trust’s peninsula branch. Twenty-two awards were presented by Mornington Shire councillor Bev Colomb and Julie Del Pra, of the National Trust Victorian chapter.

Reality a bonus to actor’s sketch By Keith Platt ORGANISERS of a gambling awareness forum got more than they bargained for when they hired actor Steve Bastoni to do a sketch. “They got the real deal; it’s something I fell pretty strongly about,” he says. Bastoni, who lives in Rosebud with his wife Bianca and their three young children, knows all about gambling addiction: “When I reached 16 I started working professionally as an actor and started making some real money, which all went into the machines.” The sketch he wrote and performed for Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (20-26 May) at Seawinds Community Hub in Rosebud was drawn from his own experiences. It involved him playing a man at a pokie machine, machine that the gambler feeds and talks to; a machine that takes his cash, forcing him to lie to his wife. Recording sound effects for the sketch forced Bastoni to again feed a machine. Against all odds, the $5 it cost to get the sounds that see gamblers respond like Pavlov’s dogs almost magically earned him $100. Instead of being put back into the machine, the “winnings” have been donated to charity. After Wednesday’s sketch, Bastoni gave the audience a frank account of his past gambling addiction. He says gambling is regarded as a quintessential Australian pastime. “A good old punt” is something that goes with a few beers. Two-up on Anzac Day is “about as good as it gets –

unless you happen to be a gambling addict”. Bastoni gambled as a youngster, graduating from pinball machines to pokies by the time he was 14. In those days he was frequenting cafes in Carlton and recalls seeing a man losing his car on a $20-a-hit machine. Success in acting brought him a taste of fame and money. “I remember having huge fights with my agents, who couldn’t understand why I needed money so soon after I had been paid,” he told the Hub audience. “In retrospect, I can see that they were trying to look after me but at the time I saw it as a gross invasion of privacy and an unwanted threat to my independence. “I was a pretty wild kid at 16 and was in a hurry to be an adult and demanded to be treated as such, especially because I was earning twice as much as my mum’s paltry wage as a teacher. “But for me gambling wasn’t about the money, it was about escape.” Bastoni’s burgeoning career saw him move to Sydney. “I was partying pretty hard at this time.” That was on the outside; the real Steve Bastoni was “desperately unhappy and lost – I was living a nightmare”. Problems caused by gambling “disappeared” while Bastoni played the machines. At night in bed “the images and music of the machine burned in my mind”.

Acting life with an audience

Steve Bastoni

Playing the pokies was not about winning cash; the addiction was the actual playing of the machine. His biggest win, $12,000, was lost within a day. “It was nothing for me to lose a few thousand dollars in under an hour.” Bastoni says he hasn’t gambled in more than four years and, despite the losses, believes people should have the freedom to do what they want with their money. He says the images and music of pokie machines are designed to mesmerise. “These are all techniques used in hypnosis to capture the subconscious mind.” He admits addicts lose the “freedom” he so strongly defends and feels “deeply for those who are enslaved by

STEVE Bastoni is a familiar face on the small and big screen. An actor since his teens, Bastoni has been in sitcoms (Neighbours), dramas (Police Rescue, Stingers, Wildside, Underbelly) and features (Matrix Reloaded) and most recently in the surf-based Drift. It seems more often than not that his characters are bad boys, villains or cops. He cheerfully admits “spending a lot of time in Kings Cross” gave him a good insight into how to act the part, from both sides: “same guys, different hats”. “It’s fun to step into others’ shoes,” he says. “But in real life I wouldn’t be like that.” In Drift he plays a bikie gang leader threatening the stability and viability of a struggling family business. The film has had mixed reviews and Bastoni says it “doesn’t need a flashy story with such a great surfing background”. The six weeks he spent filming Drift on location at Margaret River in Western Australia enabled him to indulge his own love of surfing as well as taking his family there for a while. Bastoni lives in Rosebud with his wife Bianca and their children, aged five, three and 10 months, and runs Peninsula Acting School. He is also the mainstay behind the annual Peninsula Short Film Festival, scheduled for 1 February next year. He has an agent in Sydney and sees the obligatory auditions as “not my favourite thing in the world”. His next role is playing a United States army colonel in The Half Dead, an action sci-fi feature being made by his friend, producer-director Tim Boyle. After that, he will be an ex-cop in a road warrior thriller set in Adelaide. “I’ll be a husband, a good guy.” Bastoni also offers his services to several social awareness causes, including Lifeline and White Ribbon. Last week he acted out a self-penned sketch to raise awareness of problem gambling.

the disease of addiction to gambling or any other substance”. Bastoni ended his talk with the conundrum faced by a society that sustains itself on losses.

“Pokies generate huge amounts of money for the clubs that have them and even more tax dollars to our state governments but the damage they do to our communities is immeasurable.”

LETTERS Speed camera set up on quiet road at 5am

Western Port News 28 May 2013

TODAY I received a speeding ticket for doing 64km/h in a 60 zone. I admit the offence and will begrudgingly pay the $176 fine. However, there is a major issue with where and when the speed camera was set up. The government and our police chiefs are always publicly saying that speed cameras are not for revenue raising and are set up in black spot and high accident areas to reduce the number of accidents. They seem to be a bit cavalier with the truth. The camera that detected me was set up in Stony Point Rd, Crib Point, at 5am on a Monday morning. The traffic was virtually non-existent at that time of the day, the weather was fine and dry and visibility was good. As anyone who has travelled along the section of Stony Point Rd near Symonds St knows, the road is more than twice the width of many roads, it is straight, flat and I have never seen an accident there in all the times I have driven along it. It is obvious the camera was there at that time of the morning to raise revenue. I used to be a member of Victoria Police when it operated the cameras and we were instructed to set them up in the best locations for catching offenders. There was never any mention of black spot or high accident areas. One of the main reasons I resigned from the police force was the continual pressure to raise revenue. Obviously nothing has changed. Surprised by RSPCA’s annual walk for dogs ARRIVED at work on Sunday 19 May to find there was virtually no parking available. The

Hastings foreshore was buzzing with people and dogs. What was happening? After some investigation I realised it was the RSPCA’s annual walk for dogs. What a wonderful event but then frustration set in. There had been no posters around the town, no information sent through to the Western Port Chamber of Industry and Commerce and nothing received by the Western Port Tourist and Visitor Information Centre. There were several concerns here: 1. As an information centre we were unable to pass on details of the event to our locals and visitors who had been coming through our doors asking what was on or happening over the weekend. The information centre, which is in Salmon St and open to the public as a service to the community and has 22 proud volunteers, would have been extremely disappointed that we are not recognised in these important events to promote Hastings and the Western Port region. 2. From a chamber perspective, we are extremely disappointed not to have had the opportunity to notify our members and shopkeepers to get involved, or consider opening that day so as to give the public an opportunity to see our town at its best. 3. We as the public and those of us who are representatives of various groups and associations in the community have a responsibility and obligation to inform everyone of any future events so we can promote Western Port and our township, Hastings, which in turn will further encourage business to want to occupy our vacant shops. There is no better way to showcase and express your pride in your town. Looking forward to being bombarded with info and brochures in the near future. Ceiling White All anxieties aside: Nic Hope Denton, left, and Maddy Kelly star in the stage adaption of the book Go Away Mr Worrythoughts! Picture: Yanni

Nerves stay backstage for Worrythoughts STAGE fright has taken on a whole new meaning for Maddy Kelly. As someone who managed to conquer anxiety, she now stands in front of audiences playing three roles centred on the troubled thoughts of a young boy. Kelly plays the boy’s mother, teacher and best friend in the stage adaptation of Go Away Mr Worrythoughts!, the children’s book written by Nicky Johnston to help her own son overcome his fears. “It was not until I was auditioning that I realised how much I could relate to it,” the 21-yearold former Woodleigh School student said. “Dealing with anxiety had been a big struggle for me but I have ways of dealing with it. On stage I still get nervous but then the adrenalin kicks in.” It seems as though Kelly’s anxiety has led her to take on challenges that draw attention, rather than hide with inner thoughts and worries. When not acting, she can be found on various stages around Melbourne performing with her sister Memphis in the duo Wishful. Kelly de-

scribes their music as “folksy, lots of harmonies, whimsical”. When auditioning for Mr Worrythoughts!, Kelly performed a song she had written to help cope with her own anxiety. The play is directed by Kaarin Fairfax, of Mt Eliza, and stars Kelly and Nic Denton. The key figure is Bayden (Nic Hope Denton) who worries so much and about so many things it is like a monster following him everywhere and stealing his fun. Over time, Bayden learns he can beat the worry thoughts through visualisation and works out how to stop the thoughts creeping back into his mind. Maddy plays the roles of Bayden’s mum, teacher and his best friend Tara. Go Away Mr Worrythoughts! is at Frankston Arts Centre at 6pm Wednesday 5 June. Tickets are $8. Suicides double road toll figures THE Coroners Court of Victoria, the University of Melbourne and beyondblue will examine 1000 suicides to try to save the lives of people who may be at risk in the future. On average, 550 Victorians commit suicide each year, almost double the Victorian road toll in 2012. The study into suicides between 2009 and 2010 will identify the frequency and nature of any contact people had with health, housing and other services such as police, ambulance and health professionals before they died. “Any suicide is a tragic event and we know that in the lead-up to their deaths, many people who take their lives often have contact with services or other agencies that act as pathways to health services,” beyondblue CEO Kate Arnell said. “For the first time, we’ll be able to get vital information on the pathways that people were on before they died. “Understanding these pathways means agencies can help improve outcomes for at-risk people who often experience depression or anxiety.

“If the data reveals a pattern among at-risk people of accessing certain services, we can help ensure staff at those agencies intervene if they notice other people on similar pathways.” State coroner Judge Ian Gray said the study would provide crucial information for coroners investigating suicide deaths. “The role of coroners is to reduce preventable deaths and suicides are the second leading cause of deaths resulting from external injuries in Victoria and indeed Australia,” Judge Gray said.

Neighbourhoods will be scored based on results and census data, which will help form the Metropolitan Planning Strategy, the state government blueprint for development in the next four decades. 100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...

Mystery fire claims Chelsea cottage, Frankston railway employee injured Compiled by Matt Vowell From the pages of the Mornington Standard, May 31st 1913. A FIRE occurred at Williams Grove, Chelsea, at midnight on Sunday when a four-roomed cottage, owned by Mr T. Johnson, of Murphy Street, South Yarra, and a detached kitchen owned by Mr Scott, were totally destroyed. The cottage was let to a party of week enders, but they had left during the evening for Melbourne, so that the time of the outbreak the house was unoccupied. The fire was first noticed by Mr John Gideon, who gave the alarm, but by the time the fire brigade arrived, the flames had a firm hold, and nothing could be done to save the houses already alight. The brigade, however, considering the primitive means at their disposal, did good work, and it was owing to their efforts that a bungalow alongside the burning building, and occupied by a party of young ladies, was saved. The cause of the fire is unknown. *** AS we were going to press, word was received by us that the Mentone railway station had been burnt down. The fire occurred in the early hours of this morning but no particulars are yet to hand. *** WE are compelled to hold over til’ next week the report of the address by Rev. Joseph Nicholson, on the Scripture Referendum, which was delivered at Frankston on Wednesday evening and at Mornington on Thursday evening, and other interesting items. *** WE have made arrangements that all available election returns be sent to

us this (Saturday) evening. The telegrams, as they are received, will be posted up by us at our office, so that Frankston residents will have an idea as to how the voting is going. *** THE Naval Base is rapidly improving the Crib Point district and it is growing by leap and bounds. *** MR D. Edelsten, optician, will visit Mornington on Monday, June 2nd, and may be consulted at Tait’s pharmacy from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. *** THE Anthem, “Seek ye the Lord,” will be sung by St. Paul’s Church choir on Sunday evening next, 1st June. Mr W. G. Jennings will take the solo part. *** THE annual meeting of the Frankston Tennis Club will be held at the Mechanics’ Hall on Wednesday evening, 11th June. *** MISS Florence Vines, a pupil at the Somerville State school, was awarded second prize for a map of Africa by the Victoria League of Victoria in connection with Empire Day. *** DENTISTRY – F. N. Fairs wishes to notify his patients that, in future, he will visit Somerville every Monday, also that no visit will be made on King’s Birthday, June 8th. *** THE wholesale confectionery firm, Messrs Allen Burroughs and Co., of Melbourne, donated a large box of choice lollies to the Frankstou Empire Day committee. The lollies were distributed amongst the children, and were much appreciated by them. ***

MESSRS Brody and Mason will conduct a gigantic sale at their rooms, Bay Street, Frankston, on Wednesday, 4th June, when they will offer furniture, implements, poultry, carts, etc., on account of various owners. This sale will commence at 12 o’clock sharp. *** MR E. Pound, an employee in the signal box at the Frankston railway station, met with a painful accident on Sunday. He was attending to one of the semaphores, when by some means he lost his footing on the ladder, and fell heavily to the ground, with the result that his ankle was sprained. He will be unable to attend to his duties for some time, and during his absence his place has been taken by Mr G. Spendlove, who was stationed in the box some time ago. *** ELABORATE preparations are being made by the Mornington Loyal Celebration League, for the celebrations to be held on King’s Birthday, June 9th. A very interesting and amusing programme of sports will be held in the park in the afternoon, and a bioscope entertainment (free to children) in the evening. A procession of all school children from Mornington, Moorooduc, Osborne and Mt Eliza, will also take place prior to the sports. *** THE transfer of the State School from Golden Point to Crib Point appears to have been well advised and with the ample room provided in the new Crib Hall, as now leased to the Education Department by Miss Peterson, the school attendance has rapidly increased to over 50 children, and there are more to follow. Last Tuesday the parents and scholars met, in response

to the teacher’s (Mr Keogh) invitation, and elected a new school committee of seven, to replace the fomer committee, which resigned in a body as a protest against what was said to be discourtesy on the part of the Education Department. The new committee consist of Mrs F. Vincent and Messrs Vincent (president), Osterland (treasurer), Woodger (correspondent), Lyel, Wilson, and Miller. A vote of thanks was recorded the old committee, and responded to by the retiring president. Athough time was short, the new committee soon got to work and made some effort to celebrate Empire Day. On Friday afternoon, at the invitation of Mr Keogh, the National Flag of Australia was hoisted by the president’s wife (Mrs Vincent) amidst the cheers of the assembled school children and parents, and after the formal saluting of the flag, sweets were distributed amongst the children, and an adjournment made till the evening, when the hat, kindly lent, by Miss Peterson was lighted, and games for the children and dancing for the adults was indulged in until well after 10 o’clock. The proceedings were enlivened by music – the new piano – another kind loan of Miss Peterson’s - being availed of for the occasion. Songs (patriotic and otherwise) by the children, and solos by Mr Williamson, helped to keep the enjoyment going, and after a little light refreshment the proceedings terminated. All appeared well pleased with the day’s outing. *** THE need of a resident medical officer is a pressing necessity, and the expected appointment by the Naval Department is anxiously looked forward to. ***

A VIGILANCE Committee for this part of the Peninsula is also needed, as the sanitary condition and hygienic arrangements for the new settlement of Luna Park will soon need adjusting and an epidemic forstalled. *** HIS Natural Life (illustrated), the only complete and original text of Marcus Clarke’s famous Australian story, is a feature of the June issue of The Australian Journal, which is a notable example of the general improvement in Australian publications, both as to artistic and literary excellence. The first instalment of this vivid story of the convict days of Victoria opens in this issue. Also in the serial section, is the commencement of a smart and attractive novel, entitled Phillip Steere a pleasing romance of the north-west frontier. Among novels to be included in the near future is an Australian work from the pen of Henry O’Donnell. Another novel and pleasing feature is the gratuitous issue of Gordon’s copyright prems, a completevesion in monthly parts with artistic illustrations, the June issue containing the “Roll of the Kettledrum.” The short stories are, as usual, excellent as to themes and construction, and the ladies’ pages, dealing with fashions, dress, and household matters, will be found both useful and entertaining by the feminine members of a family circle The now coloured cover is particularly attractive, and the extension of the contents to 92 pages evidences the increasing popularity of the. oldest Australian monthly publication.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT

Performance I HAVE been fortunate enough to see Rod Stewart in concert three times. For a performer in his late sixties, Rod is still strutting and prancing on stage, he is still the quintessence of a rock star in concert. Although he claims to be from Scotland, Stewart was born and bred in North London and actually went to school with Kinks lead singer, Ray Davies. Rod Stewart has completed his first album of new material in almost 20 years. The landmark new album, titled Time marks Stewart’s longawaited return to his songwriting roots and features 12 tracks, 11 of which he wrote and produced and has hit No.1 on the charts. Stewart’s first two singles, She makes Me Happy and The Finest Woman, have been released to radio worldwide. Stewart is over the moon at scoring his first UK No.1 album since 1979. Rod admitted he was very proud to be back at the top of the charts with Time, his first album of originals for over 20 years. It is his first new studio album to hit No.1 since A Night on the Town in 1976. The single from that album Tonight’s The Night was No.1 for eight weeks. Other hits singles from the album included The First Cut is the Deepest and The Killing of Georgie, a ballad of the senseless murder of a homosexual friend. Time is a landmark release in Stewart’s career, born from a burst of inspiration from which he rediscovered his voice as a songwriter and rekindled his gift for writing the honest, nervetouching narratives that have been the cornerstone to the first three decades of his career. Since 1991, Stewart, the lyricist and melodist behind such staples as Tonight’s The Night, You Wear it Well and the indelible Maggie May, had simply lost his songwriting muse. But, beginning in 2011, during the period he began working on what would become his internationally

best-selling autobiography, Rod, it returned. Said Stewart, “Something about that process of reviewing my life for the book reconnected me and that was it: I was away. Suddenly ideas for lyrics were piling up in my head. Next thing I knew, I had a song called ‘It’s Over’ about divorce and separation. And now I was getting up in the middle of the night and scrambling for a pen to write things down, which has never happened to me. I finished seven or eight songs very quickly and I still wasn’t done and it became apparent that I would eventually have a whole album of material to record, which had never happened before.” The album was produced by Stewart and co-produced by Kevin Savigar (Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Peter Frampton). Time by Rod Stewart in stores now.

*** “NEVER thought that I’d ever sing again. But hearing the first three songs, I just couldn’t say no!” With these words, one of popular music’s most recognisable, celebrated names of the past 40 years. Agnetha Faltskogs signals her return to the spotlight. The ABBA singer has returned with a new album, A (Universal) released this month, preceded by a curtain-raising track, When You Really Loved Someone which is now available internationally as a single to buy. Max Hole, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Universal Music Group International, added: “You can imagine the excitement that all of us felt at the prospect of Agnetha making new music. So we were determined that she would choose Universal to bring that music to the world, and

we are gratified that she did. This is a dream project for so many people inside our company, and for Agnetha’s fans around the globe.” Agnetha has been working with renowned, Grammy-nominated songwriter/producer Jorgen Elofsson – who has been responsible for hits by Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion and Westlife, among others – and acclaimed producer/ arranger Peter Nordahl on her brand new album. “She wanted to make music again,” says Elofsson, “We could feel that. She had been thinking about it. Basically, she’s a musician, a songwriter/singer who hasn’t done that for a while. We saw her open up, become much happier, with music again in her life.” The album features one of Agnetha first co-writes in many years: “I hadn’t written any music for a long, long time,” she says. “But I sat at the piano, and suddenly it was there.” Anticipated by millions of ABBA fans worldwide, Agnetha’s brand new material is now available on A. Max Hole, CEO, Universal Music Group International, added: “You can imagine the excitement that all of us felt at the prospect of Agnetha making new music. So we were determined that she would choose Universal to bring that music to the world, and we are gratified that she did. This is a dream project for so many people inside our company, and for Agnetha’s fans around the globe.” Best tracks When You Really Loved Someone, Back on Your Radio, Dance Your Pain Away, I Should’ve Followed You Home (featuring Gary Barlow) and The One Who Loves You Know. *** A GUITAR played by Beatles pair John Lennon and George Harrison has sold for more than $417,500 at a New York auction. The meaning of existence (and other short stories)

‘Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry’ By Stuart McCullough I AM good. In fact, I am nice, I am kind and I am thoughtful to others. You could go so far as to say that I am just one big ball of wonderful, a ray of sunshine that heats a solar cell that provides crucial electricity to needy orphans and the abandoned penguins they just rescued. Yes siree, I am nothing short of a beautiful, splendid, awesome human being twenty-four hours a day, seven days per week and three hundred and sixty five days per year. Except, of course, when I’m driving. Something goes terribly wrong when I get behind the wheel of a car. Like Bill Bixby, I find myself suddenly transforming into Lou Ferrigno without a moment’s notice. This includes turning green and ripping my shirt. It’s a transformation that I can’t even begin to comprehend. There is something about driving in traffic that I find inherently infuriating. I am sure that the expression ‘driven to an early grave’ is more than a mere turn of phrase and accurately depicts the toll that the everyday commute can take. It’s no good being judgmental in this life. People should be largely free to live as they wish. But as admirable a philosophy as this is, I abandon it the moment I turn the ignition. As soon as I’m on the road, I am constantly eval-

uating other drivers. This begins with an assessment of their driving technique and quickly devolves into the most brutal of character assessments. Changing lanes without indicating becomes so much more than a mere oversight or miscalculation but character flaw of such awesome dimensions that it defines the other driver entirely. In my mind there is no doubt that a person who fails to indicate suffers the kind of moral turpitude that causes them to flat-out refuse to sort the rubbish from the recyclables and wear socks made from baby seal fur whilst dining on endangered monkey meat using rhino horn for a spoon. That said, I realize that this could be

something of an over-reaction on my part. Traffic is, perhaps, the quickest reminder that not everyone thinks the way you do. That others routinely defy your expectations as they merge, break the speed limit or zip in and out of lanes tells you we are not all alike. In theory I believe that we are all individuals, entitled to freedom of thought, feeling and allegiance but, that said, if everyone else could simply see it my way when driving, it would be greatly appreciated. Sadly, I don’t always keep my thoughts to myself. From time to time, language borrowed from gangsta rap’s finest has passed my lips, requiring me

to not so much wash my mouth out as eat an entire bar of soap upon returning home. There has even been the occasional song composed on the spot that, given the contents, is best left forgotten. Suffice to say, the lyrics and melody of ‘The Brown Camira’ are not something I plan to share with anyone soon. Then, perhaps most shamefully of all, there have been hand gestures. Lots of them. There is, so I am told, a video game called ‘Angry Birds’. Sadly, for me this term is not a reference to a timewasting phone app as it is a description of my entire driving career. Other drivers could not be blamed for thinking I only had one finger, such is my propensity for whipping out a single digit. It’s as though I am suffering some form of Tourette’s Syndrome that has taken hold of my middle finger. I can console myself with the fact that such appalling conduct only occurs when I am driving and at no other time. But despite my propensity for bad language, rude hand gestures and musical improvisation, I am a reluctant user of the car horn. It was Shakespeare who famously once said, ‘To beep or not to beep: that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the minds of men to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous lane changes and by opposing end them. To sleep,

to drive, no more.’ For a guy that drove a Ford Focus, Shakespeare sure had a way with words. There’s an art to using a car horn. There’s the light touch I refer to as a ‘bip’. Generally speaking, it’s used as part of a farewell or to wake a fellow driver at a set of traffic lights. Something less than a full beep, in this age of distraction it has become increasingly necessary to deploy the bip. In contrast, the long horn is a tool of anger. The longer the honk, the more infuriated the person sounding it has become. There is a sense, sometimes, that the entire driving experience has become less collegiate and more like an episode of Gladiators. By that, I don’t mean extremely difficult to watch but simply more confrontational. Nowadays I find myself reluctant to deploy so much as a wake-up bip, even when the green light is staring me right in the face. It’s the fear of being misunderstood. That, for some, any horn may be regarded as a horn too far. Once, people gladly displayed bumper stickers that invited others to ‘Honk if you love Danish Blue Cheese’ or whatever and people would gladly join in. Not now. Beware the horns of war. Beep beep. www.stuartmccullough.com Western Port News 28 May 2013

PROPOSED TRIAL CLOSURE OF FOOTPATH LINK BETWEEN MIRABELLA COURT & FRANKSTONFLINDERS ROAD, HASTINGS Mornington Peninsula Shire has been in discussions with local Hastings residents from Mirabella Court and surrounding streets regarding the pedestrian link at the end of Mirabella Court. This short section of footpath between Mirabella Court and the Frankston Flinders Road footpath currently acts to provide connectivity for residents into the housing area located adjacent to this section of Frankston-Flinders Road. Concerns have been raised about inappropriate behaviour occurring in this Mirabella Court pedestrian link involving vandalism, littering, unauthorised use by motor vehicles on the walkway, noise and general unsociable behaviour. As such, Mornington Peninsula Shire is proposing a trial closure via fencing of this pedestrian link to reduce the occurrence of inappropriate behaviour for the affected residents. The Shire is interested in hearing views from the wider community about the trial closure. Written submissions regarding this proposal will be considered by Council in accordance with Section 223 of the Local Government Act and should be sent to the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, Private Bag 1000, Rosebud 3939 or via email to Edward.Pocock@ mornpen.vic.gov.au. These submissions should be provided to the Shire before the 28th June 2013, after which date the fencing will be erected for a six month period. For more information, please call 5950 1030.

Slow out of the blocks, Nepean come back to win NEPEAN LEAGUE By Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly NEPEAN League overcame a slow start to win its very first stand alone match against Heathcote & District Football League on Saturday. After a four hour bus trip to Bendigo on Saturday morning, Nepean League was slow to get out of the blocks, allowing the opposition to kick the first three goals of the match. However, on the wide open spaces of the QEO Bendigo Oval, the visitors were able to work their way back into the contest to trail by just three points at the first change. Coach Gavin Artico told his players during the break to utilise their speed and running ability and move the ball quickly through the corridor. Artico was also looking to change things up by switching play and creating space before bringing the ball back through the middle of the ground. The team followed instructions to the letter in the second quarter and set-up the win with a six goal to two term. At half time, Nepean League led the home side 11.9.75 to 7.8.50. Early in the third quarter, the visitors lost Hastings’ full forward Tony Mirabella to an eye injury. It is nothing that will keep him out of the Hastings team this week, however, his vision was impaired after getting a poke in the eye. He kicked two goals before going off the ground. The second half was an arm wrestle. Heathcote & District League was hell bent on shutting down the space of the Nepean League, pushing numbers back and restricting the opposition’s dominance when entering their forward half. Heathcote & District League sent five coaches down to the Peninsula two weeks ago to have a look at the Sorrento v Rosebud and Dromana v Rye matches. They walked away knowing that they were up against a squad that was going to run the ball. “They (Heathcote & District FL) did their homework on us. We obviously move the ball very quickly in our league and this was a concern of theirs,” coach Gavin Artico said. “In the second half they were able to slow us down but the damage was done in the second quarter,” Artico said.

It was seven goal to six second half, Nepean winning by 33 points, 18.17.125 to 13.14.92. Artico said he couldn’t be more pleased with the efforts of his charges. “They were a really great bunch of blokes, as well as being very talented footballers,” Artico said. “The group was really motivated and really wanted to represent their league – that was important and the key to us winning the game. “It was a real pity that all of the clubs didn’t get behind it (Interleague football), however, hopefully the success that the boys had on Saturday will turn that thought process around next year.” Artico said he was worried when the opposition kicked the first three goals of the game. “Look, we tried to get the guys up and going as best we could but the reality was that they were all up very, very early and then spent a long time on a bus to Bendigo. “The home side kicked with the wind in the first quarter and it took us a little while to get going, however, when we did get going, we played some really good football. “We really opened the game up in the second quarter and we should have been further in front at the break. “Rhett Sutton and Justin Farrelly were getting their hands on the footy first in the midfield and our forwards looked dangerous. “Colin McVeigh and game medallist Jason Bedford played on wings and kicked goals for us, while the likes of Daniel Waddell, Tony Mirabella and Leigh Poholke looked dangerous when the ball went in. “We had 11 goal kickers for the match, so it certainly showed that we had great ability to kick goals. “In defence, we were fantastic too. “Guys like Darren Booth, Jay Neratzoglou and Rikki Johnson dominated down there and really did set up a lot of ball movement through the middle. “Taylor Stratton got a lot of it through the middle and Frankston Bombers players Jay Reynolds and James Degenhardt were really good for us over four quarters,” he said “It really was a fantastic effort by the guys to fight it right to the end.”

Peninsula League account for Ovens and Murray and book a place for top spot match PENINSULA LEAGUE By Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly PENINSULA Football League will play Geelong Football League for the number one title in Victorian country football after beating Ovens & Murray by 45 points on Saturday. Played at the home of Carlton Football Club at Visy Park, Peninsula League opened the game up in the second quarter and went on to win in comfortable fashion, 15.10.100 to 7.13.55. The last time Ovens and Murray journeyed south was to play a combined Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League at Frankston Park in 2011. The MPNFL won in a thriller in what is still described as one of the all-time great games of football. It was as a result of this win over Ovens & Murray that the MPNFL was split into three different Interleague sides. It is alleged that the Ovens & Murray League wrote a letter to the Victorian Country Football League following their 2011 loss, calling for them to be split because they were too strong as a combine. On Saturday, Peninsula League had a point to prove.

Many believed that the selected side was a ‘second string outfit’ considering there were big name players who were forced to withdraw either through injury, club pressure or being disinterested. To tackle one of the best leagues of all time, without the support of Casey Cardinia and Nepean League players, was a tough ask. However, Peninsula League coach Steve Ryan was confident in his charges. Peninsula League started with a squad of 60 players. With players struggling from injury or not committed to interleague football, he selected a squad of 23 that “were desperate to represent their league”. This was changed at the 11th hour when skipper Anthony Barry (calf), Mt Eliza’s Josh Norman (hip) and Mornington teenager Jackson Calder (corky) were forced to withdraw. This brought in emergency, Chelsea’s Fia Tootoo, along with Edithvale’s Brent Bowden and Pines’ Guy Hendry. Pines skipper and league medallist Jimmy Messina replaced Barry as captain.

Ovens & Murray have 23 ex-AFL footballers running around this season, including the likes of Brad Ottens, Jason Akermanis, Brendan Fevola, Karl Norman, Chris Hyde, Dean Polo and Kane Pettifer, however, the only two that played on Saturday were Craig Ednie and Steve McKee. Peninsula League kicked the first three goals of the game, before allowing the O&M back into the contest with the next three goals. Peninsula played ordinary football in the second half of the first quarter and were lucky to hold a slender one point lead. Ryan told his charges during the break to run and spread, hopeful that the leg speed he and assistant Troy Shannon selected would come to the fore. They were right. Peninsula opened the game up, completely outran the O&M in the second term and booted five goals to one to go in at half time 23 points in front. Ryan said he knew that the O&M would go into the match with bigger bodies and the trump card he had was speed on the open spaces of Visy Park. “When we came in at half time, we were all very confident in our chances of going on with it,” Ryan said. “I reminded them that no-one expected us to win and that we were perhaps the second string side, given the injuries. “I knew we wouldn’t lose at that point. They had a resolve and a belief about them. “We outscored them again in the third quarter four goals to two and then again in the last, three goals to one. We totally outclassed them.

“Our run and carry was better, our desire was better and our skill level was far better. “We had 16 blokes who were playing their very first interleague game and every one of them was sensational. “There was not one player in the team that didn’t contribute to the win.” Ryan said Langwarrin rover Dan Wehner’s performance in the middle of the ground was first class. “Wehner’s grunt work was just a highlight of the match. “Our back six were fantastic too. Young Kallum Searle destroyed their full forward Adam Prior, who has been dominating at local level. Searle beat him in the one on one contests and ran off him all day. Timmy Mavric was also very good in defence too.” The best man on the ground was Seaford star Brayden Irving. “This bloke can seriously play,” Ryan said. “He played his centre half forward

role to perfection. He has wonderful hands and he really should be playing a higher standard of footy. “Ricky Ferraro and Shane McDonald were all class and our rucks in Dylan Jones and Beau Hendry were just too mobile for their big blokes. “We weren’t beaten in any part of the ground,” Ryan said. That also went for the all-in-brawl in the third quarter. “Suffice to say that there were a few blokes who enjoyed the opportunity to have a crack – in fact, it was a lot more than a few,” Ryan joked. “We certainly don’t condone that behaviour but it proved to me that we had the right 22 blokes representing our league. “The feeling after the match and the genuine excitement from the group made the day even more special. “I certainly know who the first 22 players selected will be next year,” Ryan said.

Hastings Football Club – The earliest years By Lance Hodgins Part four IN 1896 Hastings had a new president, GC Clauscen, who was a major furniture manufacturer and retailer in Melbourne. He had bought Steed’s general store in Hastings and “retired with his family to a large property on Hanns Inlet, where Cerberus naval base stands today. DJ Ham stayed on as patron, Thos Knox was secretary and W Sposito the treasurer. The captain was Daniel Sheehey who had returned from prospecting in Western Australia and was doubtlessly hardened by his experience there. It was Sheehey’s turn to speak up in favour of a football association. A premiership could hardly be determined when some clubs meet four times and others only once. Independent umpires were essential for fairness and as a control over rough play by being able to report such to the association. Three other clubs responded to the Hastings call and a meeting was set up. On Friday 8 May at Moorooduc State School, the Mornington Peninsula Football Association announced that six peninsula clubs had committed to the competition. The draw for the first round of premiership matches on 23 May was Dromana v Hastings, Frankston v Shoreham and Mornington v Somerville, on the ground of the first named club. Further fixtures were set down for 6, 13 and 20 June, 11 and 18 July, 8, 15 and 22 August, 5 and 12 September. Hastings travelled to Dromana to play the first match under the new association. The team of 20 was Sheehey (captain), T & C Knox, Watson, McLaughlin, Forte, Incigneri, Cusworth, A, T & J Mentiplay, Carey, E Davis, T Yorke, T Quirk, McGrath, S Orsino, E Clauscen and W & F Sposito. The team’s late arrival, however, meant that the game did not start until 4 o’clock and the match ended in darkness. The wet ground prevented good play and neither side scored until McGrath kicked a goal for Hastings in the second quarter. Scores were levelled in the third term, and when J Mentiplay dribbled a lucky goal through in the last quarter, Dromana responded with an equaliser. The game was drawn Hastings 2-3 to Dromana 2-2. Best players for Hastings were the two Spositos, McGrath, Quirk, Cusworth, Sheehey, C Knox and Davis. The first round had just been com-

pleted when Somerville announced that it would fold. The club had struggled to field a full team for its 45 point loss to Mornington and so wisely decided to abandon the rest of the season. On 6 June Hastings hosted Mornington to a hard fought game. Scores were level at half time with a goal apiece, C Knox having scored for the Blues. Then Hastings played all over Mornington, notching four quick goals, and by the final bell the score had blown out to Hastings 7-9 to Mornington 2-1. Goalkickers for Hastings were T Knox (2), Davis, C Knox, Quirk, Kennedy and Carey. Best were A and T Mentiplay, Sposito, Knox, Sheehey, Watson and Kennedy. A couple of weeks later the return match was played on Mornington’s new ground in Main St. Sheehey, the Mentiplays, Cusworth and Kennedy played well for Hastings but a draw was the result. Neither side scored a goal, such was the evenness of play. A late start meant that the game finished in semi-darkness. Scores were Mornington 0-5 to Hastings 0-1. Hastings Football Club’s concert served to at least temporarily draw everyone’s attention away from the on-field rivalries. Following some musical items given by Misses Devescove, Hodgins, Clauscen and Unthank, two little girls drew a raffle for a painting done by the president’s daughter, Lena. Several tickets had to be drawn before a winner who was present could be found. The raffle not only raised 5 pounds for the club but also the ire of some onlookers when the winning ticket was claimed by none other than the president himself GC Clauscen. The bona fides, even the legality, of the raffle were questioned in an anonymous letter to the local press in which the motives of the generous Mr Clauscen were questioned. When Dan Sheehey and Tom O’Reilly sprang to the defence of the club and its president, their actions were ridiculed as favouritism and fawning. There was clearly dissension and animosity in the ranks of the club and the very public to-and-fro continued for weeks. Finally, Mr Clauscen was publicly praised by Daniel Sheehey on behalf of all of the Hastings Football Club, who demonstrated a show of solidarity for him. With no association match on 4 July, Shoreham and Hastings played an extra match at Balnarring. A strong wind meant that kicking was inaccurate,

and teams were content to score with the wind for a quarter and then defend most vigorously in the next. The game ended with a win for Shoreham 1-7 to 0-3. Prominent for Hastings were the Mentiplays, Knox, Sposito, McLaughlin, Sheehey and Orsino. The following week Hastings beat Frankston in a manner which shortened its odds as premiership contenders. Hastings then enjoyed a social game against Somerville, who were able to field a full team and take the “honours from Hastings one goal to nil. By mid-August Hastings was a strong contender for the 1896 premiership. On 20 August, thanks to the existence of the Peninsula Football Association, the first “official ladder of peninsula football was published: Frankston 18, Hastings 16, Mornington 14, Dromana 14, Shoreham 14. These totals allowed four points for each match scheduled with Somerville, which had disbanded. Another footnote added that Mornington and Frankston were one match short, due to the accident to the Mornington carriage on July 18, and that it had been re-scheduled for September 19. A win at home against Dromana, 3 goals to nil, drew howls of protest about the umpire and Dromana officially reported him to the association. The accusation was that, in the second half when the scores were fairly even, he did not allow several marks within kicking distance for the visiting team. The Dromana protest was dealt with and Hastings was ordered to replay the match. In the meantime, Hastings thrashed Mornington at Hastings to lead the table by two points. It then had to withstand another protest, this time from Mornington who were emboldened by Dromana’s success. At its next meeting, the association also upheld Mornington’s protest against the bias of the central umpire, stripped Hastings of its win and ordered that it replay that match as well. Highly frustrated and feeling quite victimised, Hastings travelled to Frankston where it suffered yet another loss. Foul language flew as fist fights broke out around the ground and even a knife was produced in one spectator melee. Frankston supporters were scathing about the “disorderly scenes which have become the life of the Hastings club. The fledgling association was accused of allowing “drunken men to go onto the field threatening to knock the stuffing out of players, and boldly cursing umpires.

“The sooner other clubs take measures to wipe the Hastings Club out of existence by boycotting them, the sooner will the good old game be cleansed and purged of the disrepute it has lately gained. On Friday 11 September, Hastings footballers met to consider the future of their season. They all agreed that, in light of the successful protests against them, any appeal to the association would be a waste of time. The other delegates appeared to have a “set against them. Furthermore, it was unanimously decided not to re-play the protested matches. In the eyes of the Hastings club, those two games against Dromana and Mornington had been fairly played and clearly won. Frankston was declared the premiers and the 1896 season was over. In early 1897 a well-attended meeting at O’Reilly’s hotel considered the best way of re-organising the Hastings club and regaining its reputation. An energetic secretary, E Davis, and an influential committee were chosen to carry on the “new club, which was determined to have no connection with the “old one. GC Clauscen remained as president but there were many new faces among the office bearers. Vice presidents were Cr Ham, Cr Perrott, P N Jenkins, JJ Denton, R Spencer, J Hodgins and Rev PJ Edwards. The committee members were R Davis, L Clauscen, T O’Reilly and R Watson, who was also named as the delegate to the association. Len Devlin was elected captain with J Burns as his deputy. The year began with much public criticism of the football association’s performance in the previous year and some people wondered if it might not be a survivor in 1897. It would certainly need to be given more teeth. At least Hastings, Shoreham and Mornington bothered to send delegates to the first association meeting. This meeting was adjourned to a later date when, with the Hastings delegate in the chair, the secretary’s report highlighted the improvements made by the association last season, in particular having a fixture of matches under a recognised body with specified rules. Not everyone agreed with his assertion that formalising a premiership had certainly encouraged a more keen and friendly competition. When the discussion turned to rules, the debate floundered. When the question of umpires arose, no decision could be reached. Delegates were dissatisfied with the association’s lack of

firmness, especially in its treatment of the protests late in the season. In return, it was argued the clubs needed to give the association more support. By early May 1897, the delegates voted to disband the Mornington Peninsula Football Association. Football on the peninsula seemed to be back where it had started, with club secretaries left to arrange matches on an ad hoc, opportunistic basis. The football season did finally open for Hastings when it played host to Shoreham. Halfway through the game, the ball was impounded and incinerated by an angry neighbour. An old ball was found and Hastings went on to win by two goals to one. Two weeks later, the return game at the new Shoreham ground started at 4 o’clock and finished in the dark. Hastings played short-handed and Shoreham won 5-8 to 2-3. The new 10-yard rule for a mark caused some confusion. Len Devlin was best on ground, followed by Burns, Knox, Davies, Mentiplay and Carey. With Hastings offering a limited number of games, Devlin moved to the Frankston team as it seemed to be the only one with regular fixtures, mostly against the suburban teams. Midway through the year, however, he left the district entirely to join the growing colony of Hastings men searching for gold in the west. By July 1897, many people realised that things were not going well for football on the peninsula. Shoreham was unable to raise a team for away games. When Hastings and Frankston admitted they had the same difficulty, it was suggested that perhaps all clubs should hold meetings and consider disbanding. Dromana and Mornington did just that. Match choices were now even more limited. One afternoon, Frankston was delayed at Hastings on its way to a game at Shoreham. Hastings and Somerville happened to be playing a friendly game, so the Frankston boys joined in. Mornington arose from the ashes and played at Somerville for a win for the first time under a new scoring system in which behinds were counted in the total score. Mornington 4 goals 5 behinds (29 points) beat Somerville 0 goals 8 behinds (8 points). A return match took place a fortnight later. And that was it for 1897 !!! Things looked no brighter in 1898. Mornington found it hard to maintain interest amongst its young men, and a writer in the local press predicted that

WESTERN PORT scoreboard “… football is likely to be dead on the peninsula this winter.” At least Frankston held an annual general meeting and declared a balance of a whopping seven pounds. A motion was carried that the Frankston Football Club be continued. Their first game on 26 May saw a loss to their old Brighton friends. Matches against the “Shipping Clerks”, Cheltenham and also Mornington followed. The Mornington-Frankston match at the Frankston Oval saw a win for Mornington 2-5 to 1-3. A return match was also won by Mornington 4-3 to 3-8. There was no record of a Hastings Football Club throughout 1898. By May of 1899, practice games were in full swing across the peninsula and a revival of football was being anticipated. The local Tyabb footballers were in training. Their program from June to September involved four matches against Hastings and Mornington, and two against Frankston. Hastings journeyed to Mornington on 3 June with a team comprising Knox (2), McGrath, Incigneri (2), Cusworth, Sposito (2), Whitehead, Carmichael, Mentiplay (3) Clauscen, Yorke, Kearns, Ward, Kenna, Byrne, Riley, Anderson and Dooley. Mornington took the initiative from the opening bounce, making use of the wind to score a goal which was eventually answered by Cusworth in the second term. The third quarter was a scrambling affair with several solid encounters, the play bottled up with neither side able to score. Shortly before the final change Mornington potted another goal. The last quarter was rough and tumble due to the leniency of the umpire. Mornington won 3-11 (29) to 1-3 (9). Both sides reportedly showed a lack of practice using “kick-and-trust-to-luck” methods. Best for Hastings were Kearns, Mentiplay, Knox and Cusworth. A return match was planned for Hastings but cancelled due to the weather. On 1 July 1899, Hastings journeyed to Frankston. The players were ankle deep in mud, which was most unusual for the Frankston Park

but this suited Hastings who were by far the heavier team. From the bounce, Quirk kicked an early goal which was quickly answered by Frankston. At the first change heavy rain set in and lasted the entire match. Kicking the ball off the ground became the order of the day and both sides scored a goal. At the half time interval Hastings were 2 points up. The third quarter was evenly contested. With the players covered in mud, a supportive cheer went up when the ball was bounced for the final term. Three quick goals and Frankston had sealed the win. Final scores were Frankston 5-8 (38) to Hastings 3-1 (19) The following Saturday, 8 July, was an important game for Tyabb as it was playing its first home match against Hastings. The club hoped to avenge the earlier defeat but the Hastings kicking for goal was more accurate and it ran out winners 3-5 (23) to 0-3 (3). Goals came from C Knox, W Sposito and T Mentiplay and other good players were J Incigneri, Cusworth, Gabbett and Carmichael. The following week Hastings hosted Mornington and managed to avenge its earlier defeat by winning a close game 4-8 (32) to 3-6 (24). Hastings was not as well represented as usual, while the visiting team was strengthened by some Shoreham players. Mornington had most of the play in the first half and then the locals drew level at the final change. McGrath, Mentiplay and Knox led a final-term rally for Hastings, ably assisted by Sposito and Neaves. On 22 July 1899 and Hastings hosted Tyabb on a fine day with a good ground just perfect for football. Hastings startled its opponents with a goal in the first minute of play and by half time was ahead 4-8 to 0-1. Hastings ran out easy winners 6-12 (48) to 0-2 (2). Best were McGrath, Knox (2), Whitehead, J Mentiplay, Kearns, Kenna and F Sposito. Goalkickers were Carey (2), McGrath, Anderson, Whitehead and G Mentiplay. On 5 August Hastings hosted the unbeaten Frankston team. Kicking with the wind in the first quarter, Whitehead and C Knox scored goals

to put Hastings up 2-4 to 0-0 at the first break. During the second quarter Hastings successfully bottle up Frankston’s use of the wind along the boundary and at half time the Blues led 2-4 to 0-3. With their confidence running high, Hastings added two more goals in the third quarter, then held on in the final term to score a well-earned win. Scores were Hastings 4-7 (31) to Frankston 1-7 (13). C Knox ended up with three goals and was clearly best on ground. Other Blues to shine were McGrath, Whitehead, Cusworth and J Mentiplay. Good service was also rendered by T Mentiplay, Neaves, Kinna and Kearns. By now Hastings felt it could have predicted Frankston’s reaction to its first loss of the season. The team grizzled about the umpire, saying that he was worth 10 men to Hastings and that it had been on the point of walking off the ground on several occasions. The next week’s encounter with Mornington

was a great tussle of strength in a friendly atmosphere. Play was rough but the kicking was accurate and Mornington won by a point. In an extraordinary start to the game, Mornington ran up its entire score by quarter time. From this point, however, the home team was not in it and Hastings kicked one goal in the second quarter, two in the third, and one in the final. All to their opponent’s nil. The final scores were Mornington 4-1(25) to Hastings 4-0 (24). Many in the Hastings camp thought that this was a fitting way to finish the 1800s. Football on the peninsula was up and running again, Frankston was always vulnerable and easily upset and Mornington could still be relied upon to provide a tough, fair and enjoyable game of football. To many it was a case of “bring on the twentieth century”!
