Join the ‘stars’ for the Record A POP-UP night club opened in Hastings on Friday. Despite the months of planning and attention to detail, The Broken Record has a limited life, with just three more chances left to experience it. The Broken Record is a play by Madeleine Collins, performed by the Pelican Theatre Company and features a whole bunch of stars in bars. The show is the first of Pelican’s three productions for the year, and sees the transformation of Hastings Hall into a night club. The musical includes a singalong and karaoke, all served up with spiders and milkshakes. Members of the audience are being urged to get into the spirit by dressing in styles from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. The Broken Record is at Hastings Hall, 3 High St, at 7.30pm this Friday and 2pm and 7.30pm on Saturday. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 concession. Bookings: 5979 3202. Record cast: Alex Watson, Phillip Maisey, Talia Michelle-Hall and Tristan Cleary acting up at Hastings Picture: Yanni

Red tape delays heritage fix By Mike Hast MORE than a dozen large windows in the heritage-listed former BP refinery administrative building in Crib Point have not been replaced after vandals went on a rock-throwing spree late last year. Repair has been delayed because the building is on the Victorian Heritage Register and the site’s maintenance contractor, Chris Barber of CAB Contracting, has had to apply for an ex-

emption before repair work can start. There was also a process to gain approval and money from the budget of Crib Point Terminal Pty Ltd, a joint venture between Shell and ExxonMobil that bought the property bounded by Woolleys Rd, The Esplanade and Disney St from BP. The BP refinery was closed and dismantled in 1985 when the British company rationalised its refining activities in Australia.

The vandalism has led the building’s architect, Don Hendry Fulton, to call for security to be beefed up. “There should be CCTV, more powerful security lights and a fence around the building,” the 88-year-old Brighton architect told The News. Mr Fulton, who consults for a Melbourne architect part-time, said Shell had told him several years ago it would build a security fence “but nothing has happened”.

“The building owner has a corporate responsibility to maintain it for the community,” he said. Mr Fulton inspected the damage in early April and notified Mr Barber the building was heritage listed. Police have been unable to find the culprit or culprits, Mr Barber said. Replacement of the windows was expected to start in about a month. A local contractor would take two weeks to do the work.

Mr Barber said the design of the building meant it was not a standard job. The heritage register states the “building features a brick ground floor mounted on a low plinth, a cantilevered glass curtain wall on the first floor overhung by cornice-like eaves and an enclosing colonnade. It was awarded the 1966 RVIA Victorian Architecture Medal”. Continued Pages 10 and 11
