Tourism revival plan By Mike Hast A NEW group is being formed to revive Western Port tourism. Western Port Tourism Inc disbanded in 2009 “due to lack of interest” said Mary Ann Drysdale, who was treasurer and later secretary of the group. Ms Drysdale, who with her husband John runs Freshfield Alpacas in Somerville, is among a group reviving the tourism promotion body. They include former area councillor Brian Stahl and Max Bryant of Western Port Oberon Association, which owns HMAS Otama, the submarine anchored off Crib Point jetty. Tourism operators will meet at Peninsula Aero Club in Tyabb tonight (Tuesday).
Mr Stahl, who will chair the meeting, said Western Port Tourism was still listed on the Mornington Peninsula Tourism website “but we are not represented on the tourism body”. “Western Port has always struggled for promotion,” he said. The key was getting an information centre staffed by volunteers. “You can get pamphlets and brochures from Pelican Park [aquatic centre] in Hastings, but it’s not manned. You need people to tell visitors what’s on offer; we have a good mix of attractions.” Mr Stahl listed Western Port highlights as wineries, horseriding, B&Bs, the Dolphin Research Institute in Hast-

ings, reception venue Summerfields Estate in Bittern, the hotel and restaurant at Woodman Estate in Graydens Rd Moorooduc, golf at Devilbend, Royal Bembridge and HMAS Cerberus, Peninsula Aero Club and the Old Aeroplane Company in Tyabb, Ms Drysdale said the region had many top attractions including Moonlit Sanctuary in Pearcedale, the animal farm Rain, Hayne and Shine in Balnarring, French Island and antiques centres in Tyabb. Max Bryant said: “We have to work together to get anywhere.” He said the meeting was to see if there was enough interest to restart a tourism body. “If there is, we’ll form

a caretaker committee and have formal elections later.” Western Port was not on a recognised tourism route, he said. “The Port Phillip side of the peninsula gets all the attention and promotion.” In a letter to former members of WPT, Mr Bryant stated Western Port “desperately needs a tourism forum to discuss problems associated with our particular area”. “It is imperative that the operators of tourism facilities around Western Port focus on the immediate needs of the Western Port area. “You can expect little if any support from other similar groups around the peninsula; all are concentrating on
their own particular locations. “To be successful we must band together and promote ourselves.” He said it was time for a “back to basics campaign to clean up the area, which includes getting rid of graffiti, hoons off the roads, and ensure the shire council keeps streets clean and tidy to make it a place you would like to visit with your family”. Mr Bryant said area attractions included the marinas at Yaringa and Hastings, Moonlit Sanctuary, the aero club, the submarine and its museum in the nearby heritage-listed former BP administration building at Crib Point, Cape Schanck lighthouse, and Flinders and its shops.

Gala night to help charities DISADVANTAGED young people in Hastings, Crib Point and Rosebud West look set to benefit from money raised at this year’s Mayoral Charity Gala Dinner. Foundation 59 is one of two charities chosen by the mayor Cr Frank Martin to receive money raised from the dinner. The foundation’s website says it “works to support at-risk or chronically disadvantaged young Australians on the southern peninsula in all areas of education, personal welfare, personal safety and emotional and physical wellbeing”. The other beneficiary is the Mornington Peninsula branch of the Disabled Surfers Association, which has already received $5500 from the shire. Foundation 59 says a survey has shown Hastings, Crib Point and Rosebud West “as being among the 20 most disadvantaged postcodes in Victoria”. “Rosebud West now has the dubious honour of being in number two position. So many kids from Dromana use the telephone counselling service Kids Helpline that it puts the Dromana and Safety Beach area as number four on their list. That’s fourth over five states.” Foundation 59 sees Hastings and its environs and Rosebud as the “hot

spots” in greatest need. “This has long been the case and will come as little surprise,” the foundation’s website states. “The new surprise is the back of Mornington where, in the sprawling housing development, there are young families with children with almost no community infrastructure. “All these communities can also report significant numbers of families who have been living off welfare for up to three generations.” Cr Martin described the DSA as “a great local volunteer group that assists people with a disability to get involved in surfing, and supports the development of accessible equipment and facilities”. Money from the dinner will be used to buy equipment for disabled surfing events and a wheelchair-accessible toilet at Point Leo Surf Life Saving Club. “We are all about promoting year-
round access to our stunning beaches for everyone, and need more than $30,000 just to get started on this mission,” DSA president Gary Morton said. “A beach wheelchair costs $4500 and this is just one example of our many set-up costs.” Cr Martin urged people to book tables for the dinner “and raise muchneeded funds for our charities at the same time”. The dinner will be held at Mornington Racing Club and includes entertainment by Ray Johns and his Red Hill Baker Boys swing and jazz band and MC Tony Barber. There will be live and silent auctions, pre-dinner drinks and canapés followed by a three-course meal and drinks. Tickets are $110 a person or $1000 for a table of 10. Donations sought for Rio trip Councillor wants to ‘educate and inspire’ By Keith Platt MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire councillor Reade Smith has launched a public campaign to raise $5000 to attend two environment themed conferences in Brazil. Donors will be able to tell “friends & associates that today you have personally contributed to reducing the negative human impacts on this planet”, Cr Smith states on the website Funding 4Learning. The website, run by Spanish-based 4People Media, gives instructions on how to raise money “destined to finance an educational venture”. While there is no charge to list a campaign on the Funding4Learning website, it will charge five per cent if Cr Smith succeeds in raising $5000. On Monday, with 32 days left, he had received $159 from six donors. Cr Smith is no stranger to overseas conferences, having attended the third World Conference of Biosphere Reserves in Madrid, Spain, in 2008 and, with Cr Tim Rodgers in 2009 the United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen and its “global civil society counterpart”, KlimaForum09. It cost ratepayers $10,000 to send the two councillors to Copenhagen. Cr Smith extended his trip to include
a “self-funded study tour of submarine tourism and national galleries in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris and Barcelona as well as the Port of Rotterdam”. In his request for donations on the Funding4Learning website, Cr Smith says he is a volunteer facilitator and trustee with the Australian-based environment and social change organisation Be The Change and “hosting” the development of a Transition Towns network on the peninsula. The Transition Network – based in the UK – describes 2006 to 2010 as “a period marked by the failures of Copenhagen, an increasing sense of continuing economic contraction and further reports from highly influential sources on the threats from fossil fuel depletion”. On their return from Copenhagen, Cr Smith and Rodgers, among other things, recommended the shire set vehicle fleet targets, install energyefficient street lighting; set greenhouse emission reduction targets; establish a renewable energy target; increase renewable energy use; and protect biodiversity. Cr Smith, the councillor for Cerberus Ward, is a director of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere

He has announced he will not seek re-election in October, but will run an internet campaign to keep an eye on
candidates and the election. Cr Smith served three terms in Mt Eliza Ward before moving to Tyabb and winning Cerberus Ward where he is completing his second term. On the Funding4Learning website Cr Smith said a $1 contribution would receive “a big, warm, honest thank you”. “I am passionate about the impor-

tance and need to create an environmentally sustainable, socially just and spiritually fulfilling human presence on this planet and am driven by the need to help others to find their passion to be the change they want to see in this world,” Cr Smith states. “This is why I wish to attend at both the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives World Congress in Belo Horizonte in Brazil and the Earth Summit in Rio in June. “Both events will bring together many experts in the climate, environment and social justice arena and therefore the learning opportunities are vast.” Cr Smith says he is frustrated by “the current Australian consumption driven culture … hindering our ability as a nation to make any cultural and behavioral changes that will reduce our impacts on the environment”. Describing his occupation as a farmhand at Peninsula Aqua Growers (a commercial hydroponic business owned by fellow councillor Anne Shaw and her husband Chris), Cr Smith says he is saving toward his planned trip to Brazil. “I do hope that, with the information and knowledge I gain at these events, I can educate and inspire people with the same passions and desires to create a better future for our children and grandchildren. “I also hope that you are as equally passionate to help me to achieve this fundraising goal.”

Budget a fine way to treat peninsula COMMENT By Mike Hast THE state government’s austere budget has provided very little for the Mornington Peninsula – or for the rest of Victoria. The most unpopular item will be $9.6 million for speed cameras on Peninsula Link freeway, expected to open later this year, ahead of schedule. The pretence of speed cameras to maintain safety would appear to have been dropped as the new road will be the safest in the region. And if it’s not safe, how can the government know before it opens? Increasing fines and fees is a key part of revenue generation for the government’s budget, released last Tuesday by state treasurer Kim Wells. It is relying on a massive increase in fines to bolster its promised surplus of $155 million. The Baillieu government will gain about $110 million a year after upping various fines by up to 15 per cent. Police on-the-spot fines will go up 25 per cent. Speed camera fine revenue will jump 20 per cent to $306 million, including presumably drivers caught speeding on Peninsula Link. Oddly, southern peninsula-based MP and Education Minister Martin Dixon described the freeway cameras as being “emergency/security cameras”. A nice bit of spin. Perhaps he means the state government’s finances are in an emergency situation? Speaking of emergencies, the budget allocates $40 million for redevelopment of Frankston Hospital emergency department, the biggest item for the region. Other items for or that will benefit the
peninsula include: Rosebud Primary School will receive $190,000 to complete its planning and tender documentation for its $3 million modernisation. $67 million toward the Eastern Treatment Plant upgrade to produce class A water, started by the Labor government and locked in years ago. $14 million for Boneo treatment plant improvements, also locked in by the previous government. $4 million for planning of an expanded Port of Hastings, which is expected to cost at least $10 billion over the next 25 years. All three of the peninsula’s Liberal MPs – Martin Dixon (Nepean electorate), David Morris (Mornington) and Neale Burgess (Hastings) – were singing from the same book in their press releases issued on Wednesday. Here’s a sample: “The budget is shaped by the economic challenges of the present, but its focus is on securing the future. Global and economic factors have resulted in a softer economy and significant reductions in government revenue,” Mr Dixon said. “These forces are placing real pressure on local businesses and families and on the government’s capacity to meet community needs. “This budget sets out a clear plan to meet these challenges and positions Victoria to take full advantage of current and future opportunities.” “This budget sets Victoria on a sustainable financial path, which will allow the state to provide the services, facilities and capital works required by our growing population,” Mr Morris said. Looks like it’s time to invest in cruise control if you plan to use Peninsula Link. Set it on 99.96km/h and enjoy the sylvan views out of the corner of your eye.

Weedy ways: Volunteers are briefed by DSE about the importance of the weeding in protecting native plants and animals.
ABOUT 75 volunteers and staff from Parks Victoria and Mornington Peninsula Shire have removed invasive weeds at McLarens Dam on Arthurs Seat. The community working bee was part of a state government program to control weeds on public land in Melbourne’s outer urban areas. “Members from around 15 volunteer groups across the peninsula came along on the day [Saturday 14 April], so it was wonderful to see such a large number of groups helping to support this important program to protect the native bush at Arthurs Seat,” Parks Victoria ranger Georgia Kerr said. “The weeding was quite physical and the work was certainly hard going, but the group was so enthusiastic they were reluctant to stop for lunch
and demanded to keep going.” The group cleared about one hectare of boneseed from around the dam. Shire conservation officer Matt Stahmer said the working bee was a “major boost” to the ongoing program to manage weeds in the area. “Invasive weeds, such as boneseed, are a major threat to the native flora and fauna at Arthurs Seat,” he said. “Boneseed grows quickly and reduces the regeneration of native trees and shrubs.” The DSE has allocated $550,000 to the Arthurs Seat project with the shire contributing $120,000 to the four-year project for follow-up work. Further weed work is planned in the Waterfall Gully and Cook St and Kings Falls areas.

Buyer beware of rats, rot and rogues By Arthur O’Bryan STUART Bitters’s workplace sometimes resembles an episode of Man vs. Wild with Edward Michael “Bear” Grylls with tales of hair-raising adventure and the odd dangerous encounter. While trying to give the thumbs-up on properties his clients considered buying, Mr Bitters has had a redback spider up his leg, disturbed rat nests, been sandwiched in a four-inch subterranean cavity and had a roof’s supporting beam disintegrate “almost bringing the whole thing down on an old seaside bungalow a client was about to put a deposit on”. Following years of drought and, more recently, two years of rain deluge, some older houses are starting to show the effect of our unpredictable weather. Mr Bitters has been a carpenter and property inspector on the Mornington Peninsula for more than 25 years and can’t remember a time when the natural elements have conspired so greatly to reduce the foundation capacity of bayside homes. He lists three things that cause unease: wild weather, increased vermin and rogue building inspectors. “It’s unprecedented. Most houses expand and contract marginally, but sometimes I’ve been under a house and found significant shifts in the foundations. This invariably leads to leaky water pipes, cracks and unstable walls.” Over the past summer, from Flinders to Seaford, Mr Bitters’s company South Metro Inspections has found significant water leaks caused by drought and rain. “Houses are moving all the time. Water stains on ceilings and around skirting boards, especially in basements, have led us to excavation work that reveal sometimes multiple leaking pipes and occasionally unstable
Dodgy building inspectors could spark claims

foundations. Rising damp and mould are other issues of concern. I had one family forced out of their home near the beach in Shoreham by mould that required a month-long renovation to eliminate. “It had got to the point where the owners felt constantly sick – making the house virtually uninhabitable. “Leave these things unchecked and they become big problems.” Across the region, it’s not just cracking that is the worst scenario. “I’ve been under the floor and discovered nests of sometimes over a dozen rats. Rats are invading houses as changing weather conditions lead to rising numbers of rodents. “Biologists are now talking about a plague, yet most people remain ignorant. There are definitely heaps more vermin around these days.
“When I show a client a video or photo from under their home they are quite traumatised by what they see.” Mr Bitters says dodgy building inspections are another thing on the rise. “When you feel things just aren’t right, it is so important to have an inspection done by people you can trust. I’ve had clients experience trouble after having one of these ‘cowboys’ look over their property. “They ring me and are invariably shocked to learn that literally anyone can do a building inspection with no need for any qualifications, no experience and no insurance or building fault knowledge.” Across the peninsula there are concerns with construction work on new homes approved by inexperienced inspectors who don’t have adequate knowledge to see faults or potential
problems. “The seriousness of this should not be underestimated,” Mr Bitters said. “An insurer may be able to deny cover in circumstances where work has been carried out by an unregistered person simply because of the fact that legislation requires them to be registered.” Mornington Peninsula Shire has an environment protection unit within its building planning department. While it does not have a building inspection register, it does recommend residents and potential home buyers conduct a careful check before they employ anyone. There are rogue operators out there and it is important to do your homework to ensure your most valuable asset is inspected by someone well qualified.
THE latest allegations about Victorian surveyors using unregistered building inspectors is unlikely to have major implications for warranty insurance policies, according to a commercial litigation specialist. Slater & Gordon associate Robert Auricchio said any disputes between homeowners and their warranty insurers could result in the insurers making claims against surveyors’ professional indemnity policies. He says that under the Building Act, a registered surveyor has to have professional indemnity insurance. “Their insurer would probably have exclusions about using unregistered or not properly qualified inspectors,” he said. “In a dispute, the building warranty insurer could sue or join the surveyor directly if they had used an unregistered inspector.” Mr Auricchio says the homeowner can have recourse to sue the surveyor as well, but these cases can be expensive and the decision about whether to join the surveyor to an action will vary from case to case. “We would probably look at various types of claims against the surveyor if there were issues on the inspection of the building and defective work,” he said. The Victorian Building Commission has been advised that several surveying firms are using unregistered inspectors and it has taken some disciplinary action against surveyors in recent years. Rare transit of Venus next month VENUS will pass across the face of the sun next month, the last transit for 105 years. Dr Nick Lomb, former Sydney Observatory curator of astronomy, says Venus will transit on Wednesday 6 June between 8.16am and 2.44pm. Dr Lomb, author of Transit of Venus: 1631 to the present, said there had been six transits since the phenomena was recognised – 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and the most recent in 2004. “The 6 June event is our last oppor-
tunity to observe a transit of Venus, as the next one is on 11 December 2117. I encourage people to see it with their own eyes, but you can’t look directly at the sun.” Two websites for more information are www.sydneyobservatory.com.au and www.transitofvenus.com.au A transit occurs when a planet passes directly between the Earth and the sun. Transits can only occur with planets with orbits between the Earth and the sun – Mercury and Venus. Mercury
transits about 13 times every century. Transits of Venus occur in a pattern that repeats every 243 years with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by gaps of 121½ years and 105½ years. Venus and the Earth are aligned in the same direction out from the sun about every 584 days, but a transit does not occur each time as Venus’s orbit is usually above or below the sun in the sky. Venus will travel in a straight line across the sun, but because the sun appears to rotate as it crosses the sky, Ve-
nus will appear to move in an inverted “U” shape. The 1769 transit has a vital historical connection to Australia. Captain James Cook was dispatched to Tahiti on HMS Endeavour to observe the transit. After a successful observation he was directed to search for the “great south land” thought to exist in the South Pacific Ocean. He “discovered” and charted the east coast of Australia and claimed the continent for the British in 1770.
Geoffrey Wyatt’s photo of Venus crossing the face of the sun in 2004. Next month’s transit is the last for 105 years.

Income, the great divide By Keith Platt RESIDENTS in the Mornington Peninsula’s richest suburb have more than three times the income of those in the lowest paid area. Taxpayers in Portsea earn an average $150,771 while those in Rosebud West receive $45,751. The figures are contained in the latest statistics from the Australian Tax Office grouped in postcodes. The proportion of income paid in tax by residents in Portsea is higher, but the remaining disposable income is still nearly three times that of those in Rosebud West. The towns may be within 16 kilometres of each other, but the lifestyles available to their residents are poles apart. Portsea is defined by having some of the most expensive real estate in Australia, with clifftop mansions valued in the tens of millions of dollars. Secluded properties are owned by the influential and wealthy, politicians and business tycoons. While Portsea’s bay beaches are open to the public, access and parking can be hard to find. At Rosebud, there are relatively few beachside properties, and even those are separated from the beach by a wide foreshore and public footpath. The foreshore camping ground fills to capacity each holiday season, with residents sharing the beach with thousands of visitors. This large amount of public land

also means its future is open to public debate, exemplified by the latest controversy over Mornington Peninsula Shire wanting to use a slice of it for an aquatic centre. Privately owned land behind the foreshore reserve at Portsea virtually deals out any shire interference except for building and planning permits. Elsewhere on the peninsula differences in personal income are not so marked, although Flinders, where average taxable incomes are $125,562, comes a close second to Portsea. It too has beachside clifftop homes, this time facing Western Port, which also pose an access problem for those not fortunate enough to live in one. After Flinders, average incomes drop rapidly, with Merricks, Arthurs
Seat and Sorrento residents falling in the $80,000-plus bracket for taxation purposes. The latest data available from the tax office covers incomes for 2009-10 and shows Mt Eliza ($76,143) is the only peninsula town in the $70,000 bracket, although Tuerong and Moorooduc come close with incomes of $69,195. Balnarring Beach, Red Hill, Merricks North, Mt Martha and Somers all fall within incomes of $60,000. Both sides of the peninsula have a share of towns with incomes of below $50,000: Hastings ($48,979), Crib Point ($47,524) and HMAS Cerberus ($46,208) in Western Port, and Rosebud and Boneo ($47,641), Rye and Fingal ($46,710) and Rosebud West ($45,751) on the Port Phillip side.

Creating a business by stopping the rot By Keith Platt SCIENTIST Chris McEvoy hasn’t sat back to relish the success of a business based on a timber preserving product used in power poles throughout Australia. He has since developed a vertically integrated timber operation, from plantations and milling to marketing products. Now, he has helped build a luxury resort in Lesotho, southern Africa, which is helping to finance schools and community centres for surrounding villages. Each of the seven million timber poles carrying power and communications lines throughout Australia have a limited life span: they rot and are expensive to replace There are drawbacks to replacing them with concrete poles or running the cables underground. Cost is a significant factor. More than two decades ago Chris McEvoy and his friend and work colleague Chen-Woo Chin recognised that timber poles were here to stay and that there was money to be made by anyone who could stop the rot and prolong their usefulness. The entrepreneurial scientists were working for the CSIRO at Highett researching timber preservation when they decided to take a chance to profit from their findings. The research was not quite finished, but they did a deal with the CSIRO, which allowed them to start a private company and hire their former employer to complete refining and proving the product in return for five years’ royalties once it hit the market. The rest is history: the two partners invented a relatively benign substance that can be placed in a hole drilled into the poles. The “stick” resembles a piece of chalk and the chemicals are only activated when the moisture content in the pole reaches the critical level when rot would begin to take a hold. The preserving chemicals then spread evenly through the timber. The two scientists also created the equipment to make their product. Because it is unlikely there will be a drop in the
number of poles in Australia and the treatment has to be redone at regular intervals, the income stream from the original Preschem company in Cheltenham is assured. It all sounds so simple, and in some ways it is, but McEvoy and Chen-Woo were the brains behind the research and in the right place at the right time. Not all entrepreneurs are so lucky, certainly not all scientists, but McEvoy has an inquisitive mind and, it seems, has always been open to the pursuit, development and expansion of new ideas. Now the sole owner of the IP (intellectual property) of Polesaver Rods, McEvoy, a Mt Martha resident, is using proceeds from their continuing success to fund other enterprises, both business and philanthropic. On the business side he has developed wood finishing products; bought a sawmill; established timber plantations; and operated holiday villas in Bali. The Bali venture led to the idea of building a five-star tourist lodge in a national park in southern Africa for the benefit of surrounding villages. His sense of social responsibility also spurred him to arrange for teachers from the Mornington Peninsula to spend time teaching in these villages. McEvoy is also turning his attention to reducing the high infant mortality rate in the nation where the incidence of HIV/AIDS infection is estimated at 20-30 per cent. McEvoy has vertically integrated his timber businesses – from growing trees to milling and selling (Radial Timber Sales at Dandenong and Yarram) as well as manufacturing and selling remedial wood presevatives and clear timber finishes (Preschem in Cheltenham). His radial sawmill at Yarram in south Gippsland is the only one in the world and, he says, creates less wastage and a more stable product. The mill was started by Andy Knorr, described by McEvoy as “a typical greenie” who decided

that rather than protesting he would find a more efficient way of producing sawn timber. Knorr’s method to make rectangular boards from circular logs involves cutting to the radius and then either parallel or at right angles to the growth rings. McEvoy said Knorr was “a bit before his time” but sees a bright future in the radial saw process once more plantation hardwood is available. In a May 2009 submission to the Victorian Timber Industry Strategy, McEvoy claimed the existing strategy was misleading in that it stated that Victoria had the largest plantation industry in Australia with 46 per cent being devoted to hardwood, although, in fact, it was all destined for woodchips. “Something must be done now to ensure that significant hardwood sawlog plantations of the right species are established in commercial quantities. I could wait no longer and have started establishing these myself.” McEvoy predicted there would be “no timber industry in Victoria” unless others followed his lead. “Timber is a renewable resource, no way is it finite,” he said. “And they’re never going to find a large undiscovered resource of native forest from which timber can be harvested.” Although he has plantations that will supply hardwood for radial milling, he admits “30 to 40 years is a helluva business plan”. McEvoy believes his Heartwood Plantations is probably the biggest hardwood plantation owner in Victoria, “but even that’s not really very much” when it comes to satisfying demand. He says it is “quite a science” to get timber growing straight and healthy, involving genetics and soil quality. Heartwood’s ongoing research and development has shown the benefits of growing a combination of trees, including nitrogen-fixing wattles. Heartwood Plantations’ general business manager Jon Lambert founded the non-profit Christian organisation Beyond Subsistence, which is undertaking several timber growing projects in Africa. “I like the idea of being in charge of my own destiny and business,” McEvoy says, “but the two didn’t go hand in hand at CSIRO. “Scientific boffins usually have no business sense.” McEvoy describes how he and Chen-Woo listened to other CSIRO scientists talking about the day they would “get out”. “Some of them had been there 50 years. We had the initiative and enterprise to leave. ” He believes the royalties earned by the CSIRO “made it 10 times more than if we had paid for the work”. The two partners were the only employees at the first Preschem factory in Cheltenham, knocking on doors and doing their own marketing to fill a niche. “It was the best decision I ever made, but some days it also seemed like the worst. It was hard stuff. There were setbacks and roadblocks, but we had a belief in the technology and the product. We had developed a very simple oil-based formula, including a moldicide. It started selling from day
one. We were the only ones. It was a specialist market, but we didn’t realise how big.” Fifteen years later McEvoy is still dealing with many of those early customers. The big break came when they created a treatment for the power poles that did not involve dangerous substances such as creosote. “We made a pre-measured, easily placed capsule that did not require the wearing of protective gear.” Sales to the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria soon led to interest from power companies in other states. McEvoy says there are about 150,000 concrete power poles in Australia, but they come at four times the cost of timber and have their own problems: heavy to lift; prone to damage; their steel reinforcing creates “concrete cancer” and its conductivity prevents them being placed near telecommunication pits. Since the introduction of their preservative, annual replacement of timber poles in Victoria has dropped from three per cent to 0.25 per cent. “There was no Eureka moment, it was all trial and error,” McEvoy said, adding that competitors had come and gone, including a couple of large international corporations. While the product has been accepted throughout most of Australia (South Australia doesn’t have timber poles), New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and Brazil, attempts are continuing to break into the United States where 200 million timber poles present a tempting market. Political lobbyists (“hidden protectionism”) and requirements continually being asked of Preschem have created obstacles but McEvoy is unfazed: “We know there are opportunities there so it’s worthwhile to keep trying.” The global financial crisis created few problems: “Our market doesn’t necessarily go up or down. Every utility in Australia uses wooden poles.” Preschem has had few price rises, preferring instead to absorb cost increases by becoming more efficient. “I’m still amazed at how little people know about decay and rot in timber; they think it’s an animal. “Termites are a problem, but decay causes five times more problems in homes than termites.” In Bali more than a decade ago McEvoy liked the villas where they were staying in Legian and called the owner in Perth and the two became partners, building another two. This enterprise led to a more expansive plan for a lodge in Lesotho, an independent kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa. Grander in scale and more uncertain of success, McEvoy teamed up with an old school pal, Nick King, “who I’d always spoken to about building an upmarket place”. King, a builder, had been working in South Africa for some years and agreed “tourism needed the higher end”. Since opening Maliba Mountain Lodge, McEvoy and his partners have established a community trust with the idea of using profits from the lodge to help the Basotho people in nearby

villages. The five-star lodge’s website says that “providing employment and upliftment of the local people” were “driving influences in establishing a world class tourist lodge”. The lodge was built using mainly local labour, with many now trained and staying on as barmen, security, house staff, gardeners and maintenance men. One local is a manager. McEvoy says that although Lesotho has the highest literacy rate in Africa, its low gross national product sees little money spent on public health or hospitals. “It’s estimated 30 to 40 per cent of people have HIV/AIDS, which is placing a tragic stress on families and the health care system. “Young girls are giving birth to babies without the help of their mothers. “You hear horror stories of their treatment in hospital when for thousands of years babies were born at home.” McEvoy, who sponsors annual visits by Australian teachers, would like to extend this model by bringing midwives to Lesothu. Mailiba lodge is within the 5600-hectare
Ts’ehlanyane National Park and offers spa treatments and massage therapy. Guests are urged to get involved by offering time or money to help with the school donation program, a “community forest” and projects for farming bees, craftwork and growing free range chickens. “I want Maliba to be something that puts back into the community,” McEvoy said. “I see it as a legacy from high end tourism in a country that really has nothing but disease and pestilence.” Since opening in September 2008, the lodge has produced the cash to rebuild four schools and open the first of two planned community centres that can be used to run adult education courses. “Schools are bringing students to the lodge to see what we do and boys who normally drop out to become goat herders are realising there are other opportunities for them. “These attitudes flow on to the parents. School pass rates are going up. It’s really encouraging”. Reprinted courtesy BusinessTimes www.businesstimes.net.au

Art and history: Heather Crabtree organised Japanese-style flower arrangements in rooms at Coolart homestead in Somers. Picture: Yanni
Flowers make cool art THE ancient art of Japanese flower arranging has graced the rooms of the historic Coolart Homestead in Somers. Ikebana is a disciplined art form based on linear perfection, colour harmony, space and form. In Japan, decorative flower arrangements are seen as being on a level with paintings and other art objects. Ikebana is reputed to have been bought to Australia by Melbourne-born Norman Sparnon, who spent 12 years living in postwar Japan where he studied under the great masters of ikebana. The Coolart exhibition featured the “traditional and sculptural” arrangements of Sensei Carlyn and teachers of the Victorian Sogetsu School of
Ikebana. The origin of ikebana in Japan dates from about the seventh century, when the custom of offering flowers to Buddha entered Japan from China and Korea along with the introduction of Buddhism. Ikebana is seen in homes, offices, conference rooms and hotel lobbies. The Sogetsu School was founded in 1927 by the late Sofu Teshigahara, who believed ikebana should be both enjoyable and creative. He developed the Kakeiho method, which combined several styles, spreading the art form throughout the world, as well as staging exhibitions of his own ikebana-based sculptures.

Multi-level car park start at hospital
Award for volunteer worker ROSEMARY Birney’s work for the environment has been recognised with an “outstanding achievement award. Ms Birney, of Somers, received the Victorian Coastal Council award on Thursday 26 April. The award was made for the more than 12 years in which “she has contributed countless hours to the protection of the foreshore as a member of the Somers Foreshore Committee and more recently as a member of the Friends of the South Sea Somers Foreshore Reserve Committee. About 250 members of volunteer groups, management committees, government departments, MPs and municipal mayors were at the annual awards night held at Melbourne Museum. Wurundjeri elder Colin Hunter made a welcoming speech and the awards were presented by Environment Minister Ryan Smith. The evening was compered by Western Port Biosphere chairman Rob Gell. Each nomination in the six categories was followed by an audiovisual clip showing the achievements. Categories included: Building and Design; Community Action; Natural Environment and Planning. More information about the awards night is at the Victorian Coastal Council website.
THE first stage of Frankston Hospital’s long-awaited multi-storey car park is scheduled to start on 12 May. The $11.3 million project is designed to provide 568 parking spaces at the hospital, bringing the total spaces to 1586. The work means about 55 spaces in the car park outside the hospital entrance will be temporarily closed. Extra visitor spots will be created in the adjoining car park and staff will take up off-site parking. The new car park will be built in two stages over the existing visitor car park and the former helipad. The first stage is scheduled to be finished this year and the complete job by mid-2013.
“The construction plan has been purposely split into two stages so that minimal disruption will be caused to hospital staff, patients and visitors, executive director of planning, infrastructure and information technology Simon Brewin said. “We recognise that the temporary closure of spaces may cause some parking difficulties for visitors and patients, particularly during peak times such as visiting hours. Mr Brewin urged patients and visitors to “plan ahead. Once the car park is completed, the temporary helipad at Delacombe Park will be replaced by a permanent helipad on the roof of the new car park.

Builder’s own best buy
Breath of fresh air
BE sure to benefit from the remarkable quality of this builder’s own home. Constructed to exacting standards, external and internal living zones seamlessly merge to create a warm and spacious living and entertaining area. For the chef of the family there is a magnificent modern kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and stone benchtops with a handy bifold servery window to the undercover area. The master bedroom has a walk-in robe and ensuite, with built-in robes in three more bedrooms. The rear garden has an inbuilt playground and at the front is an exposed aggregate driveway providing off-street parking in addition to the double garage, which has rear access for trailers and long vehicles.

First home value
Picture perfect
THIS is a lovely brick-veneer home set in a quiet part of ever popular Tyabb, close to schools and shops. The maintenance factor is very low with all living areas well-furnished with good quality carpets and drapes. A nice bathroom and kitchen have been well-tiled. The large lounge room has a vaulted ceiling and leads to the kitchen, which has a wall oven and dishwasher as well as an adjoining dining area. Step outside to a small pergola area with built-in spa. There is a double garage and single carport.
PRESENTING in as-new condition throughout, with shiny tiled floors and good quality carpets that create an excellent impression as you enter, this three-bedroom home is sure to suit the trendsetting first home buyer. Walk through to the modern kitchen, complete with stainless-steel appliances including dishwasher, under-bench oven and gas hotplates. A lounge room, positioned at the rear of the home, overlooks the timber decked outdoor area and garden. The home has been designed with some very smart inclusions for the tech savvy and security conscious. It has keyless entry, not unlike most hotel rooms where you use a card. To screen visitors at the door there is a monitoring system. Still under builder’s warranty, this is an impressive, modern home.

AROUND THE PENINSULA
‘Rebel’ pool meeting draws 250 By Mike Hast MORE than 250 people packed Rosebud Memorial Hall on Friday night for a passionate discussion about the shire council’s proposed aquatic centre on the foreshore at Rosebud. People came from all over the peninsula to voice their opinions about the controversial $28 million project, including a large group from the Western Port side. It was the first meeting about the Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre (dubbed SPA by the shire) since the shire was given permission to build on the foreshore by state environment minister Ryan Smith. The shire had been trying since 2005 to get government permission to build on the foreshore, but had been blocked by the Department of Sustainability and Environment supported by various
environment ministers. The meeting was organised not by the shire, but by two rebel councillors on the Port Phillip side, Graham Pittock whose ward is based around Dromana and Tim Rodgers of Sorrento Ward. Against the wishes of the shire’s executive, they decided the people should be heard on SPA after a majority of councillors in March voted to not have public meetings about the project. More than 50 people had their three minutes on the microphone, perhaps the most comprehensive display of people power ever seen in Mornington Peninsula Shire since its formation in 1994. A big majority said it was good to have the chance to express their views and praised Crs Pittock and Rodgers. The meeting was recorded and speeches were gathered by the two
councillors, who will present a report to the council. Speakers were required to register prior to Friday night, and more than 40 did so, but Crs Pittock and Rodgers received a large number of requests just before the meeting started and handed out numbered tickets. Everyone who wanted to speak got the chance to. When the meeting started, Cr Pittock looked at the full seats and people standing around the edges and said it was community grass roots at work. Cr Rodgers said it was gratifying to see so many people. “This is one of the biggest issues of the next 10 years [in the shire]. It’s not often this council spends $30 million.” He said he had put up the motion to conduct a roadshow that had been rejected by six of the 11 councillors. It was important for all peninsula resi-
dents to find out about the project, he said. After the meeting, Cr Rodgers said more than 70 per cent of speakers were opposed to the foreshore pool site. Pro-foreshore speakers said Rosebud had been promised the pool seven years ago and the town needed an iconic seaside tourism drawcard to revive the area. Rosebud was a struggle street town, one speaker said, and it would help to have the pool near the shopping centre. It was only a small part of the foreshore “which is there to be used by people”. Another said SPA would help solve unemployment and keep young people in the area. Rosebud was a dowdy town, said one Rosebud resident; the ugliest place on the peninsula and it needed a spark; a place of high visibility on the foreshore to attract tourists who would use
it during summer only. Other speakers said the pool would be a great asset for health and fitness. Many anti-foreshore speakers, including environmentalists, said the site selected by the shire would be subject to inundation due to the effects of climate change. Public buildings should no longer be erected on precious foreshore given what we know about storm surges, one said. The coastal strip, beaches and reserves were the shire’s most precious assets, said another. Other speakers questioned the cost of the project, estimated by the shire to be $28 million. Would it cause rates to rise and other projects to be put on the backburner? The shire is working on plans for SPA and they will go on public exhibition, although no date has been provided.
Community relishes sweet taste of democracy COMMENT By David Harrison LATE at the Rosebud pool meeting on Friday night, a new mood emerged as locals spoke, many without notes, of their devotion to Rosebud, their lament about what they saw as its down-atheel appearance, its poverty, its unemployment, its long neglect by the shire. They accused “you” and “they”, in the audience and in the well-appointed shire council offices at Besgrove
St in Rosebud, of snatching away the dream of their very own aquatic centre, SPA, the vision splendid that had been promised them, a beacon on the foreshore that was now in danger of dimming and dying. They had imagined, despite lack of any plans or final government permission, their own grand swimming and wellbeing palace, inviting visitors to call in as they arrived in town or travelled through. It was poignant and unsettling. Who
would want to snuff out the dream? In their yearning for it – or, it seemed, for any dream that would boost their civic pride – they were ready to ignore facts, such as the laws that protect foreshore areas, so precisely detailed at the meeting by Labor MP Johan Scheffer. Who could blame them? One sensed a reluctant concession among some that most of the “you” and “they” at the meeting were not opposed to the pool, but to the foolishly chosen location.
One speaker asked: if it’s illegal to build it on the foreshore, what are we here arguing about? He was right. Foreshore site supporters, Cr David Gibb at their head, have for well over half a decade brushed aside this formidable barrier as a trifle. It is not. The shire must still make a case that the pool is coastal dependent – and produce drawings, costs and a business plan for it. As Johan Scheffer said, we live under a set of rules that must not lightly
be set aside, by any level of government. Mr Scheffer was the only MP to attend. Local MP Martin Dixon and Federal Coalition frontbencher Greg Hunt sent apologies and letters, which were read to the meeting. Mr Hunt showed a canny ability to lay smoke and retreat from his previous position. He now says the SPA location “is a matter for the council” and that the proposed site “is not on the foreshore as some claim”. Continued next page.

AROUND THE PENINSULA
Community relishes sweet taste of democracy Continued from previous page.
By strict legal definition – Mr Hunt is a lawyer – he is right. “Foreshore” is the area between high and low tide marks. Governments and councils all over Australia, including this shire, disagree with this definition. But Mr Hunt is in no degree right in his assertion about sea level rise and he is uncharitable in arguing that climate change “should not be misused to prevent community projects”. Who does he accuse of doing that? Politicians cannot resist an opportunity to throw mud. To settle the canard that the pool is not on the foreshore, consult your Melway. Or read the Coastal Management Act, which defines coastal Crown land as “any land reserved ... for the protection of the coastline” and “any Crown land within 200 metres of [the] high water mark of ... the coastal waters of Victoria ...” Or read the Mornington Peninsula Planning Scheme – which, like the Bible, can be quoted by Satan to support an argument – which declares (21-08 Foreshores and Coastal Waters) that a “precautionary approach” must be applied when considering new developments, including “an assessment of vulnerability to climate change effects”. It goes on to warn against “the construction of additional structures on the foreshore except where substantial net benefits to the community and/or coastal environment are clearly demonstrated” (my emphasis). The shire and pool proponents prefer to omit the adjective “substantial”
from the phrase “substantial community benefit” because it would require a far higher standard of proof in gaining government approval for the pool. Pool proponents have largely switched their argument from the unarguable “coastal dependent” to “net community benefit”. VicRoads rightly prefers “substantial” to be included in the benefit test. The shire planning scheme also advocates that foreshore policy should be developed “in full consultation with the local community”. It goes on to state that “[The shire] must consider ... the degree to which the proposed development is dependent on a coastal location”. Local community? Surely for a project of this magnitude – the biggest and most expensive in shire history – the entire peninsula community is entitled to be consulted. We’ll all be paying for it. But pro-foreshore pool councillors voted against such consultation. They see their case best served by keeping the wider community as uninformed as possible about the spending of $30-40 million. This tedious analysis needs to go one last step: what precisely has been decided about SPA’s location? Not much, actually, despite the popping of champagne corks among the David Gibb faction. Environment Minister Ryan Smith, ignoring his department’s rules that an applicant must provide extensive details – plans, costings and so on – with a request to build on the foreshore, consented to “the proposed use of the
Rosebud foreshore reserve for the location of [SPA] at the site of the existing memorial hall”. That is, he has given only in-principle approval. Mr Smith now requires the information that should have been supplied with the application – plans, costings, evidence of net community benefit, evidence of “broad-based” community support, a “coastal hazard vulnerability assessment”, a detailed traffic assessment, and a business case. But no mention of coastal dependency, the keystone of his coastal policy – that foreshore development must be coastal dependent. The minister has apparently been heavied and has succumbed. Did local MP Martin Dixon lean on him? Mr Dixon would rather realise his election promise than lose face. Most pollies are similarly sensitive about their faces. The shire says it has already supplied Mr Smith’s department with evidence of broad-based community support and net community benefit. When will it release this material to the community for analysis? Back to the meeting. Among a number of impassioned speakers was one from a former Sale councillor now resident on the peninsula who expressed concern about the general performance of councillors and senior shire staff. He announced he plans to stand for council in the coming poll. He received a warm reception. New blood! They liked the thought of it. Through all three hours of the meeting, the degree of ill temper and inter-

jection was pleasantly subdued. Most people were there to listen, not disrupt. Afterwards, audience members stayed back to help stack the chairs. They had been given their right – their right – to speak, to express their views. This meeting should have been a shire initiative to inform ratepayers, one of a series, supported by all councillors. It should not have been left to two councillors who oppose the foreshore site to organise it, in the face of hostility from some councillor. Many who attended were puzzled by local ward councillor David Gibb’s petulant and inaccurate accusation that the meeting had been organised behind his back and held while he was away. Is only the dog on the dung heap entitled to bark? One hopes all councillors, Cr Gibb included, will now agree to grant communities across the shire that right to listen, and to speak, on this huge – and hugely expensive – project, which will
directly affect their household budgets through the annual rate bill. And through the charges the shire imposes on us through fines and fees, which will also go up to pay for SPA. Cr Gibb and his pro-foreshore pool colleagues, and senior shire bureaucrats, should support this proposal in the interests of openness and transparency. And democracy.

Market’s $20,000 THE state government has given $20,000 to Mt Eliza Farmers Market. The grant was announced by Mornington MP David Morris last week. He said the market “was an incredible success right from the start”. “I welcome the decision of Rural and Regional Development Minister Peter Ryan to … assist the expansion of the popular market.” He said the market was an excellent local institution and “a great outlet for
peninsula produce”. “While we have a great variety of produce right across the peninsula, there are not many places you can go where it is available in one space – not all of it, but a good representation of it.. Mr Ryan said the $20,000 would pay for market research, the introduction of new market-day activities, recruiting and training of stallholders, market promotion, improvements to site infrastructure and business improvements.”

Twitter: how I loathe you By Stuart McCullough FOR people who genuinely believe in their heart of hearts that Twitter is important and a legitimate part of our broader social fabric, look away now – for no earthly good can possibly come from reading any further. If you think the “Twitterverse” is greatest thing to happen since people stopped eating sliced bread, pack up your eyes and take them somewhere else without delay. Shoo! Shoo, I say to you! For everybody else, huddle up, come close and listen – I think Twitter is a colossal waste of time that threatens to undo much of the good work evolution has done up until now. It’s stupid, it’s nasty and it’s narcissistic. It’s a medium that not so much pitches itself to the lowest common denominator as plunges headlong beyond zero and deep into negative territory. Phew! There is no way on earth that I could have gotten all that out in only 140 characters. Or, if I did, I’d have to sacrifice a whole bunch of perfectly innocent vowels and end up with “twttr, u sck” or something equally horrifying. Not for me. I much prefer to say too much than to risk saying too little. When it comes to writing, give me rolling hills of unedited rambling in which I can hike for hours and moun-
tains of prose as dense as the person who wrote it. Anger needs plenty of room to operate and I’d much rather enjoy my hatred in all its unedited and splendid glory. That said, despite the ubiquitous nature of all that is Twitter, I deeply suspect that I don’t really know what it is. I’ve no idea if it’s something you get on, like a bike or Facebook or, for that matter, a morphine drip; or if, instead, it’s not something you choose so much as it chooses you. Whether, much like the priesthood, it is less a choice than it is a calling. Perhaps that’s why they have “followers” on Twitter. For me, it remains a process so mysterious that I have found myself starting to resent it. It now seems that I have reached a stage in my life that something apparently
so vital to the rest of humanity has left me wholly untouched. Despite my Twitter-free existence, I otherwise manage to lead a fairly normal life. Or as normal as is reasonably possible under the circumstances. I get up, go for a run, eat breakfast and go to work. The next day, the whole carnival repeats itself. At no time do I find my text finger beginning to itch or become gripped with the desire to find out what happening in the Twitterverse. I don’t think I like the term “Twitterverse” much. It sounds like a galaxy of idiots. But the term is simply one of many corruptions of the term Twitter, all of which are designed to make it sound much more important than it actually is. There are tons of variations – tweets

(noun), twittering (verb), etc. But despite this, those who participate in Twitter are not referred to as “twits”. I would have thought it was obvious. And incredibly accurate. Perhaps I’m the wrong person to ask – I have never been that quick to adapt to technology. After all, I still eye the microwave with suspicion and regard the internet as a form of witchcraft. Not since I got burned by the whole laser disc debacle of the mid-1990s have I been able to trust new technology (thanks for nothing, DVD!). In fact, technology is a cruel mistress – the kind that boils your rabbit in crystal clear high definition in a tragically redundant format, but a cruel mistress nevertheless. Let’s face it, I belong to a generation that gleefully disregarded vinyl records in the belief that they were as useless as a mouthful of marbles in favour of getting our hands on as many compact discs as we could, only to find 20 years down the track that long-playing records are treated with a reverence more befitting a relic of a lost Incan civilisation while CDs are – once they’re loaded onto your iPod – only good for landfill. So perhaps I can be excused if I’m a little bitter, a little gun-shy. Technology has made a fool of me
before, and I am yet to forgive it. Perhaps that’s why I despise Twitter so much. I find it deeply ironic that so many musicians are devoted to Twitter. Lady Gaga has more than 10 million followers on Twitter, but is yet to release a decent single. Or, at least, one that doesn’t sound eerily like Madonna’s Express Yourself (which is itself a pretty weak-at-the-knees facsimile of Respect Yourself by the Staple Singers). For those who love Twitter – who tweet and retweet, who await news of trending hashtags with all the breathless anticipation of an asthmatic trumpet player, I would gladly apologise if I thought any of you were able to get this far with your tragically depleted attention spans. No doubt by now you’ve been distracted by a bottletop or a passing car or have asked the question unique to those cursed with far too little to do: I wonder what Nicky Minaj is up to? Let me put it this way – what use is it? Exactly. For me, I continue to resist. I don’t want to be anyone’s follower. If you disagree, please let me know. In fact, feel free to tweet me at “#i don’t particularly care what you think”. After that, go and get a book. www.stuartmccullough.com

HISTORY
Long-lost Hastings statues unearthed in Mt Martha
Stately grounds: Statues lined the driveway of the Gold homestead. Most of them were dropped down a well and lie buried under modern-day Hastings.
By Peter McCullough IN July 2008 The News published ‘Bungunyah – the home of Harriet and Frank Gold’. It was written by Yvonne Perret (nee Smith) who, with her uncle Keith Smith, had just completed a nostalgic visit to Bungunyah. Yvonne is a great granddaughter of Harriet and Keith is a grandson. The Golds were a fascinating couple and a brief pen-picture of each is printed in this paper. The original accounts can be found in the excellent Hastings – People and Places series published by the HastingsWestern Port Historical Society. The three volumes are available from the society or from Hastings Newsagency and are essential reading for anyone interested in the early days of Hastings In her reminiscences, Yvonne mentions the white marble statues that were placed along the drive which “... gave the impression of an elegant and stately way of life”. Toward the end of her story she refers to an unsolved mystery: what happened to the Italian statues? When I visited Roy Flood at his home in Mt Martha late in 2011 to compile a series on the Flood family, I couldn’t help noticing two large statues in the front garden. I asked about their origin and unwittingly found the answer to Yvonne’s query. Roy and his late wife Jean visited Bungunyah in about 1960 just after the new
owner, Ray Greenway, had moved in. Ray had a young family and was concerned about the danger of an old well near the house. Ray’s solution to the problem was to fill the well with the old statues and he asked Roy to give him a hand. Jean intervened; she thought they were too good to be dumped down the well. The new owner offered her as many as she would like but they could only fit two in the back of Roy’s van; the other three or four went to their final resting place. For about 40 years the surviving statues stood peacefully in the garden of the Flood property in Boes Rd, Tyabb, although the male statue lost his left arm when struck by lightning. When the Floods moved to Mt Martha, so did the statues. But where did the statues come from prior to their installation at Bungunyah? With the assistance of Don and Lance Hodgins I discovered that the statues originally graced a property named Triton near Hanns Inlet. Once owned by the furniture retailer G C Clausen, Triton and several adjoining properties were bought by George Stacey in 1911 and then sold to the Commonwealth in the following year for the proposed naval base. Although its official name was Triton, the property was known by locals as Statue Farm.

Bungunyah facts ROY Flood has memories of Mrs Gold being driven around Hastings in the chauffeur-driven Rolls and suggests that she was probably the only local to get about in that manner. Mrs Gold’s chauffeur for many years was Richard Osterlund, the father of Hastings resident Noelene Thornell. The Rolls was the model where the chauffeur sat in the front and the passengers sat in a sort of glass box. Noelene recalled that Mrs Gold insisted her father look the part: cap, gloves, uniform and highly polished shoes. Mrs Gold had a white carpet in the Rolls, which had to be kept in pristine condition. Mr Osterlund was always concerned his highly polished black shoes might leave a mark. The Bungunyah statues originally came from Triton, a farm where present-day Cerberus is situated. It was known to locals as Statue Farm (pictured left). The property was owned by George Stacey for a year before he sold the land to the Australian government in 1912. (Pictures from Mooradoo About Nothing by Arthur Woodley and Bruce Bennett.) The remnants of the Golds’ property are guarded by two lion statues in present-day Pinewood Drive (pictured below). The stables and a section of the house remain.
Interesting facts
Frank and Harriet Gold, Hastings ‘royalty’ John Daniel Wilkinson aka Frank Gold John Daniel Wilkinson was born in Leicester, England, son of John Thomas and Caroline Wilkinson. He married Rhoda Kirk and they had seven children. He came alone to Australia in the 1880s and soon after arrival began to use the name of Frank Gold. He invested in various properties in Melbourne and bought Bungunyah in Hastings. Rhoda died in England in 1913 and he married Harriet Smith (nee Hall) in 1921. Harriet was well known in Hastings for her charity work and being driven by a chauffeur in a Rolls-Royce imported in 1923. John died in 1924 aged 78 and Harriet died in 1948 aged 92. – From Hastings – People and Places Vol 1.
and garden parties and other fundraising events. Harriet was a generous benefactor, donating the equivalent amount of money that was raised. She established the Younger Set dances that were held monthly and organised hospital balls over many years. A larger-than-life figure, she was chauffeur-driven in a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. It was rumoured she kept a bag of coins in her car to hand to local children. Harriet died at Bungunyah in November 1948 aged 92. – From Hastings – People and Places Vol 3.
Harriet Gold Harriet Hall was born in Norwich, England, and married George Smith in 1874 in England. They migrated to Victoria in 1888. Harriet and George had two children, George William and Kathleen Isobel. Kathleen in later years married Percival John Gaskin. George Smith died in 1895. Harriet, as a widow, met Frank Gold (John Wilkinson). Harriet and Frank were married in Melbourne and lived at Bungunyah homestead, which stood in what is now Pinewood Drive, Hastings. Their land was bounded by Watts Road (now Frankston-Flinders Rd), Hodgins Rd, Victoria St and Cool Store Rd, about 35 hectares (87 acres). Some of the buildings including the servants’ quarters and some of the pine trees survive. Their wealth came from a barbed wire and nail manufacturing business that Frank had in Richmond. Frank’s roof nail – made by a machine that could produce the nail, shank and head from one piece of metal – proved popular. Harriet took an active interest in the development of Hastings Hospital. She was the first president of the Hastings and District Bush Nursing Hospital Auxiliary and the first life govenor. Most of the committee meetings were held at Bungunyah. By Frances Cameron WE had some glorious weather in early autumn, but now it seems as if the cold of winter has arrived. Deciduous trees are losing the chlorophyll from their leaves as they don’t require it anymore, which means the trees are adorned in their red and gold autumn finery until the wind makes them bare. Dreary days can give us an excuse to sit inside and plan for the rest of the gardening year, but there is always something to be done; there are plenty of things that can be pruned at the moment. If anybody is lucky enough to still have hydrangeas in their gardens after the extraordinarily long, hot summers of recent years, you can start to think about when you want to prune them. The most commonly planted Hydrangea is the mop-head hydrangea (H. macrophylla). The large, rounded heads of four petalled flowers can be found in a large variety of colours ranging from the ubiquitous blues and pinks to creamy greens and burning reds. The beauty of these flowers is that over time the colours will change, as a result you can have one bush with an array of different coloured flowers. Leave the bush alone until all of the flowers have faded and the leaves have begun to drop before you prune; this can be done any time from late autumn to winter. There are a couple of ways that you can prune these plants; older, less bushy plants can be cut back really hard to just above a healthy bud to allow for them to grow back with a better, more bushy shape. The drawback is that you may not get flowers
for an extra year. However, this may not always be the case. My father-in-law treats his hydrangeas with an uncaring abandon at pruning time, and they flower beautifully every year. Another, more gentle way is to firstly cut out all the old, woody canes to the ground, then taking each stem that has flowered, cut at a point where there are two fat buds starting to form. These buds will often be about a third of the way down the stem. After you’ve cut off the old flowers, take a step back and check which other stems need to be cut to get a nice rounded form and cut them back to a point where you think they should be. As with most plants, pruning hydrangeas need not be an exercise in precision; the most important thing is to make sure your secateurs are clean and sharp to avoid messy cuts as most plants are able to recover from a “bad” pruning. Another plant to pay attention to now is Sedum spectabile or showy sedum (S. Autumn Joy is very popular). Cut the old, yellowing stems down to their basal leaves and remove any other dead foliage to allow for air circulation and drainage. The clumps at the base of the plant can be divided and moved to any area that is fairly sunny and well-draining or be put into pots to share. Have a look around your garden to see what other plants have dead flowers and stems and clean them up, simply getting rid of the unsightly dead elements of your garden will go a long way towards making it a more pleasant space. Keep deadheading roses and patrolling for aphids and other pests and weeds. Summer grasses such as kikuyu have slowed down but not stopped and the pesky winter grass (Poa annua) will pop up absolutely anywhere.

People with old galvanised iron roofs with paint that has been on for a long time don’t have to replace their roofs – just fix them and it will save them thousands. Peeling of paint on galvanised metal could be from inadequate cleaning of metal prior to painting, the use of the incorrect primer or just weathered paint. Here’s some important tips on salvaging your roof. What you’ll need: scraper, wire brush, heat gun or pressure cleaner; paint stripper; sandpaper; galvanised metal primer and quality paint. Step 1 Remove all peeling paint by scraping or by
using a heat gun or paint stripper. If peeling is extensive, consider using a pressure cleaner. We hire these units. Step 2 Sand or wire all traces of white or red rust and spot prime with suitable metal primer. Step 3 Thoroughly clean surface with detergent and water. Rinse off and allow to dry. Step 4 Apply the right primer. Ask Hastings paint shop for advice. Step 5 Apply two coats of a suitable water or oil-based roof paint. Somie’s first win, Tigers thrash Blues By Toe Punt SOMERVILLE coach Leigh Stewart enjoyed the “best night’s sleep” he has had on a Saturday night for a month after his side celebrated its first win of the season. The Eagles won a thriller against the previously undefeated Rye, 9.12-66 to 8.12-60, and is just one game outside the top five. It’s incredible to think that despite losing its opening three games, the Eagles’ season is back on track. Things only get better for Somerville with the news that Aaron Rose, Josh Collie, Glenn Boyd and Aaron Murray are all likely starters against Hastings this weekend. On Saturday, Somerville was in control during the entire match. Stewart told The News he always felt his side had the upper hand. “It was one of those games where we thought we were well in control, but the scoreboard always had the game closer than that,” Stewart said. “We were four goals in front at one point, but Rye kept coming back.” Stewart said it had been a tough fortnight for the club. “Dropping those blokes was hard and it hurt us but the guys took it very well, responded well and it makes us all stronger.” (Somerville dropped players who did not attend a recovery session after the loss to Frankston Bombers.) “Other than a very poor performance against Frankston, we haven’t been too bad,” Stewart said. “We had our chances to beat Sorrento and kicked 10.21 against Pearcedale with a number of players out. “We were good for four quarters against Rye and now head into our match against Hastings full of confidence. “Justin Allsop was sensational on Rye goalkicking machine Justin Van Unen, restricting him to four goals while also

being a rebounding defender. “Chris King and Sammy Adams were also very good for us on Saturday, along with the likes of Sedgwick and Bitters. “It’s unbelievable to look at the ladder and see that we’re just one game out of the five. Making it is all going to come down to percentage and at the moment, ours isn’t too bad.” Dromana showed yet again on Saturday it is becoming a powerhouse by beating Hastings 23.9-147 to 8.10-58. Ryan Hawkins booted six and Paul Minchington and Tony Banks three each as the Tigers completely dominated the Blues. Jay Neratzoglou was again dominant in the backline, along with Ryan Worn. Ryan Slocombe led from the front through the middle and Rikki Johnston and Adam Hunter continued their dominant form. Hastings was never in the contest – it was undisciplined,
ran forward of the footy, didn’t follow team rules and lacked structure. It is a far cry from the side that almost won the 2011 grand final. Blues coach Glenn Michie wouldn’t use injuries as an excuse. “There were a few out (Mulheron, Pike, Deveraux and Martin), but everyone had players missing from their best side. Our depth is good also, so I won’t use injuries as an excuse for playing the way we did,” he said. “We talked during the week about the way we wanted to play and we just didn’t respond. “We were unaccountable and showed little leadership. “We’ve come to the time when we need to find out who is committed and who is not. “The opposition followed instruction to the letter on Saturday and we didn’t. “It might be time to start
changing things a bit,” Michie said. Dromana coach Gavin Artico said he wouldn’t be “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” just yet if he was coach of Hastings. “It’s not for me to tell others what to do and how to do it but ‘Mouse’ [Michie] is a good mate and his side went extremely close to winning a grand final last season,” Artico said. “Our boys were good on Saturday and we have been building to that four-quarter effort for a while. It was one of those games where we knew we were in control, but couldn’t believe the scoreboard. “We were super impressed with the way they went about it, but there are still areas that we need to get better in.” David Hull and Mick Agnello were the best of the Blues, while Andrew Hurst did a good job in defence. On Saturday, Frankston Bombers was smashed by the previously winless Devon Meadows. “It was embarrassing,” Blackford said after the game. “We had our most inexperi-
enced side in for the year but to get beaten by almost 100 points was shocking. “Before the game, we talked about what we needed to do to win – we needed to bring our A game. What we dished up was E grade.” Frankston Bombers players were second to the footy and did not put their heads over it. The Panthers were outstanding, winning 24.12-156 to 8.11-59. Scott Young and Ash Adams booted six goals each and Daniel Velardo kicked four. For the second week in a row, Andy Oldmeadow was dominant. An undisciplined Ben Shultz almost cost Rosebud the game on Saturday against Red Hill. Buds coach Mark Hustwaite said he was happy to escape with a draw, 10.8-68 to 9.1468. In the third quarter, with Rosebud in control, Shultz was reported and sent from the field for striking. This allowed the Hillmen to boot four goals to one in the third and take control of the match. The Buds hit back in the last and led well into time-on, but a
Red Hill snap from 20 metres locked up the scores and the siren sounded. Rosebud went into the game without stars Daniel Giarusso (ankle) and Greg Bentley (wedding), and back-up ruckman Rhys Woods (wedding) was also unavailable. Hustwaite said considering where the team was at threequarter time, the two points for the draw “was a bonus”. “It was an awful third quarter for us and I was happy to take the draw,” he said. Tom Baker booted four and Sam Krumeich and Ryan Spooner picked up votes for the Buds, while Ben Maguiness, Sean Holmes and Mitch LaFontaine were outstanding for the Hillmen. Sorrento completed the expected and knocked over Pearcedale, 18.14-122 to 5.1444. For the winners, Leigh Poholke kicked five and Tyrren Head three while Cayden Beetham was best on ground in his first match for the season. Trav Sauer, Ben Mitchell and Chris Fortnam were the best of the Panthers. Results on next page.

Langwarrin under pump after hat-trick of losses By Craig MacKenzie LANGWARRIN goes into Saturday’s State League Division 2 clash against Diamond Valley United at Lawton Park desperate to revive its championship hopes. Three straight losses are a rarity during coach Gus Macleod’s 14-year reign and he’s keen to ensure it stays that way after successive defeats. “It’s my responsibility and it’s my job to fix it. We’ll definitely be looking to improve the side,” said Macleod. “There will be a couple of positional changes on Saturday and it’s obvious that Caleb [Nicholes] needs a hand up front.” Macleod is hopeful midfield linchpin Fatih Akdogan will be available after missing the past two games through injury and new signing from Southern Stars, midfielder Daniel Fotopoulos, is a likely starter. Langy’s shock 2-1 defeat by Noble Park United on Saturday came courtesy of a stunning first-half freekick and a low 20-metre shot in the second half. Alan Pratt’s well-taken goal late in the game was little consolation.

It was a winless weekend for the Frankston City area with Peninsula Strikers being swamped 4-1 by Springvale City, Frankston Pines going down 3-1 at home to Monash University, Skye and Seaford drawing 2-2 and Baxter having to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Noble Park. The injury list at State League 3 outfit Strikers is mounting. Star forward Josh Thompson has been battling a hamstring injury for weeks and other hamstring victims are Dogan Dagli and Gladwyn Roberts. Defender Alex Van Heerwarden is trying to overcome a knee injury in time for Saturday’s trip to Fairfield Park to take on Fitzroy City while last year’s best and fairest, Alex Calder, comes into the squad for the first time this season. The weekend’s heavy defeat doesn’t reflect the amount of possession that Strikers had or the chances created. Pines went into last weekend’s Provisional League 1 clash without five first team players and two send-offs did little to further its cause. This Saturday it squares up to Riversdale and coach Danny Verdun

changed his formation at the interval and transformed the game. His side hit back 10 minutes into the second half with a low angled shot into the far corner from Djuro Mirkovic, and Roberts completed the comeback by smashing the ball home in the 76th minute. “They’re a well-drilled, well-organised side and will give sides plenty to think about this season,” Seaford coach Kevin Taylor said. Seaford’s Chris Sibson is available for this weekend’s away game against Caulfield United Cobras while Shaun Martin returns to the Skye United squad for the trip to Shipston Reserve to face Bayside Argonauts. Although Skye is third bottom on five points, it is just two points away from the league leader after four rounds. Bomber sights on Eagles in match of round Round 7 Previews Friday 11 May Melbourne v Hawthorn, MCG, 7.50pm To kick off round seven, the winless Demons take on the resurgent Hawks. Melbourne faced an impossible challenge at Geelong but put up a good fight. Power forward Mitch Clark was the best, kicking four goals after bouncing back from a neck injury. The Hawks needed a win desperately and got it against St Kilda. It was a great night for the forwards with Cyril Rioli kicking six and Lance Franklin five. The Demons may have to wait a few more weeks for a first win. Hawthorn by 67 points. Saturday 12 May GWS Giants v Gold Coast, Manuka Oval, 1.10pm The two newcomers of the competition face off in their first match and both will be confident of winning. The Giants took it up to Carlton for three quarters before being overrun in the last. The Suns played their best game of the season by nearly beating Fremantle. Harley Bennell was amazing, notching up 37 disposals and kicking three goals.
Nathan Bock breaking a leg will be a massive loss especially with experienced players Ablett, Rischitelli and Harbrow also missing. This will be a close game, but the Suns have looked the better team. Gold Coast by 20 points. Adelaide v Geelong, AAMI Stadium, 1.15pm The Crows go into this match full of confidence after beating the undefeated Swans. Patrick Dangerfield has had an amazing start to the season, providing plenty of speed and skills through the midfield. Full-forward Taylor Walker has come a long way from the man who got dropped midseason in 2011; he has kicked 20 goals so far. The Cats have slipped under the radar by just doing just enough to win games. Their forward combination of Tom Hawkins, James Podsiadly and Steve Johnson has been a focal point. This is really good match-up and if the Crows can play like they did on the weekend they will win. Adelaide by 13 points. Richmond v Sydney, MCG, 4.40pm The Tigers go into this game after a good away victory against Port Adelaide. Shane Tuck has been an impressive addition to the Tigers’ midfield this year after being on the fringe for a long time. Jack Riewoldt answered his critics by kicking four goals and had plenty of opportunities
to kick more. The Swans had their first loss of the season on the weekend. Adam Goodes went down with a hip flexor injury after kicking five goals. Josh Kennedy has nearly been the best player in the competition, winning many contests. The Swans will bounce back and win comfortably. Sydney by 37 points. Essendon v West Coast, Etihad Stadium, 7.40pm In the match of the round, Essendon play to end West Coast’s unbeaten run. The Bombers cruised to an easy win against the Brisbane Lions, but a knee injury to Stewart Crameri is another addition to a long injury list. Brent Stanton was back to his best with an excellent 39-possession game. The Eagles held the Kangaroos at bay for a hard-fought 25-point win. A worrying sign is their injury list with Josh Kennedy joining LeCras, Embley and Nicoski on the sideline. This is a big match for both but it will take more than injuries to stop the Eagles. West Coast by 4 points. Brisbane v Collingwood, Gabba, 7.40pm After losing two of their first three games, the Pies have bounced back winning three in a row. They have started getting some big names back in the side and there’s a good chance Dale Thomas, Darren Jolly, Alan Didak and Jarryd Blair will return from injury. The lesser lights
have proved they can fill the void with Lachlan Keefe, Ben Sinclair and Martin Clarke playing every game this year. The Lions struggled against a superior Bombers side. Jack Redden was the best for Brisbane with 30 touches. He has played all 60 games since debuting in 2009. The Pies will be too strong in Brisbane. Collingwood by 44 points. Sunday 13 May North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs, Etihad Stadium, 1.10pm The Kangaroos dropped out of the eight after losing in Perth on the weekend. They were in the game for three quarters but were unable to hold off the Eagles in the last. Midfielders Andrew Swallow and Ben Cunnington were best for the Kangaroos. The Bulldogs put up a gallant effort against Collingwood. Ryan Griffen played a pivotal role in keeping them in the game with Daniel Giansiracusa chipping in with three goals. The Bulldogs have a massive hole in their forward line with tall forwards Liam Jones and Jordan Roughead struggling to have an impact. This is a must-win for North Melbourne and they will prevail. North Melbourne by 24 points. Fremantle v Port Adelaide, Patersons Stadium, 4.40pm This game allows the Dockers to retreat to their fortress after nearly
going down to Gold Coast. Freo never looked dangerous and if it wasn’t for players like Matthew Pavlich and Tendai Mzungu, they would have lost. The Dockers will most likely have their giant ruckman Aaron Sandilands back. The Power are in even worse shape after losing five in a row and failing to play four consistent quarters of footy. In the absence of Jay Schulz, young gun John Butcher was overwhelmed and never looked in control. Port haven’t travelled well all year and this will be no exception. Fremantle by 57 points. Monday 14 May St Kilda v Carlton, Etihad Stadium, 7:40pm In the usual Monday night fixture, the Saints look for their third win as the Blues try to cement a spot in the top four. The Saints fought hard all night but weren’t able to keep up the intensity in the last quarter and let Hawthorn overrun them. Justin Koschitzke played a great match after initially being dropped and kicked five goals. The Blues looked sloppy against the Giants. They rested a few players but the effort didn’t appear to be there. They made amends in the last quarter by kicking six unanswered goals. It’s obvious the Blues are a better side with Chris Judd and Jarrad Waite playing. Carlton by 44 points. Twitter: FootballTragic9 Total tips: 44
Warriors sink Wynbay Power
The big time: Nicole Fisher and Natasha Fraser of Crib Point Tennis Club represented the Mornington Peninsula region in the 12 and under Alicia Molik Cup on 24 and 25 March at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. The girls said they enjoyed the challenge of playing higher ranked players in their age group.
By Andrew Brady THE Westernport Warriors continued their scintillating start to the RecLink season with an impressive 23.15-153 to 4.4-28 victory over the Wynbay Power in near perfect conditions on home turf at Crib Point on 2 May. The Warriors proved yet again there is life after the retirement of club icon Marty “Dobbo” Dobson with a few mumbling ‘Marty who?’ The club was quick to hose down speculation that the Collingwood Football Club had been in touch to ask how the Warriors had so successfully overcome the loss of their huge forward in anticipation of Travis Cloke’s departure. There is a new kid on the block who goes by the name of Tim “Buddy” Churchin who slotted through an amazing 12 goals against the Power. Club historians have ploughed through the books and have confirmed that 12 majors is the most kicked by anyone wearing the Warriors’ colours. Buddy has 18 goals for the season and has shot well clear of the competition. Power was well and truly “robbed” with all three Robb boys (Joey, Kyle and Steve) repre-
senting the mighty Warriors for the first time. Brodie “Ovada” Hill dominated across halfback and worked brilliantly with mate Jake “Lleyton” Hewitt who took ownership of the wide expanses of the Crib Point wing. Ash “Naughty” Norton showed glimpses of his best with towering pack marks and Jake “The Flying Dutchman” Van de Nesse ruled in the big man department. It was a team effort from the Warriors who ran the ball coast to coast with precision passing and a real desire to run, link up and use the ball. Certainly the signs are there that they have a group with the talent to go all the way in the 2012 season. The Warriors are at home again in two weeks’ time when we take on the Western Storm from Footscray on Wednesday 16 May with the game starting at noon. Where would we be without our supporters? A big thank you to our number one man, Mick Loveridge of L W Marine and the Heritage Tavern, John and Leah of Westside Laundrette and Alf and Bev of Hastings Dry Cleaners.
