Blueboys play for flag glory By Mike Hast HASTINGS Football Club’s seniors have a shot at premiership glory after beating Dromana in the preliminary final on the weekend. The Blues meet their nemesis Sorrento in a do-or-die grand final at Frankston Park on Saturday afternoon on a predicted warm day of about 25 degrees. The Sharks have beaten Hastings three times this season by narrow margins, but good judges say the two best Nepean League teams are through to the grand final and it will be a crackerjack game. It’s the first shot at a flag in 16 years for Hastings, the Mornington Peninsula’s most successful club with 21 premiership pennants (see box). The Blues thumped the Tigers at R J Rowley Reserve in Rye on the weekend, winning 12.13-85 to 7.8-50 with Tim Churchin leading the way with seven goals. The win gives them another shot at Sorrento, which fell over the line against Hastings at Rosebud the week before in the semi-final. Former club president Kevin Miles said the key to victory over Dromana on Saturday was outscoring the Tigers in the first quarter two goals to one when Dromana kicked with a 4-5 goal wind. “We used the wind well in the second and booted five goals to one to set up a handy lead and then kept them at bay for the remainder of the game,” he said. Mr Miles said the long and narrow Frankston Park ground would not bother the Blues on Saturday. “We carry the ball as well as anyone.” He said every player should be right. “We’ll train hard on Tuesday and then for about an hour on Thursday.” Blues legend John Watson, a triple premiership player, said he was confident the Blues could win the flag. “Each time we’ve played Sorrento this year we’ve been in a winning position,” he said.
