First held in 1982, the Western Canadian Crop Production Show has become Western Canada’s foremost showcase for our highly diversified grain industry. With an exclusive focus on the grain industry and the grain production cycle, a variety of exhibitors are present to share the latest information on technology, machinery, products and services for crop farming.

Last year, over 17,000 people attended the four-day event, setting an all-time attendance record. This year, Saskatchewan’s strong economic climate, an outstanding harvest, and high world demand for our grains have set the stage for another worthwhile and successful event.

Welcome from the President

Western Canadian Crop Production Show “Growing with you for 30 years” In December 1982 a group of individuals discussed the concept of a “Chemical, Fertilizer and Seed Show”. By January 1984 the first Western Canadian Crop Production show was in the books and the conclusion of the committee was “there is a positive attitude toward this show and with the right type of promotion the Crop Production Show should be very successful”.

Now in its 30th year, the success of the Crop Production Show is evident with another sold out trade show; additional special events; increasing number of attendees and the ability of Prairieland Park to facilitate growth by ongoing improvements to our facilities.

Since its inception, the focus of the show has remained very clear with both exhibitors and attendees appreciating the fact that the Crop Production Show is the only one of its kind in Canada, focused exclusively and entirely on the crop production cycle.

While the industry has changed dramatically over the years the Crop Production Show committee has maintained its commitment to present an extensive showcase of products, equipments and machinery for crop farming along with informative and interactive seminar programs to discuss different issues and challenges of the farming sector and plan strategies for solving them We invite you to be part of this 30th annual event and the celebration of success that is the Western Canadian Crop Production Show.

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to the 30th WCCP show! This year is a terrific milestone that all of us at Prairieland are very proud of. For 30 years we’ve offered producers a great start to their crop year planning.

Our mandate is to focus on “Chemical, Fertilizer and Seed”, as it relates to grain production, and we’ve been true to that for 30 years. However, the shows evolution has been in step with prairie farmers needs as well. Our exhibitors are offering products and services that are the most advanced on earth. Our facility has expanded to accommodate these advances in equipment and technology. And we’re anxiously awaiting the next 30 years.

Managing Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Dr. Jeannie Gilbert obtained her PhD from the University of Manitoba in 1988 and has since worked as a Research Scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Presentation Summary:

Fusarium head blight (FHB) has been a constant threat to cereal production in Manitoba for more than two decades. The Red River Valley epidemic of 1993 caused losses in wheat and barley of over $100 million, and since then total annual losses have been estimated at over $1 billion. Since 1993, the Canadian Grain Commission has reported a steady westward occurrence of FHB. Economically damaging levels of FHB were first reported in eastern Saskatchewan in 1997 and 1998 and the situation has worsened in this region over the last two years. Though not at significant economic levels, FHB has been found in wheat and barley in Alberta.

Fusarium graminearum is a fungal pathogen and, in general, is the predominant cause of FHB in Canada. However, other Fusarium species are also found in Saskatchewan. FHB infection results in economic losses throughout the grain industry: producers suffer yield reduction and grade losses, mills refuse shipments of grain with high levels of deoxynivalenol (DON), the major toxin

produced by F. graminearum, and export markets have very low tolerance of Fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK) in the grain. While poultry and cattle may safely ingest feed rations with up to 5 ppm DON, hogs refuse feed with as little as 1 ppm DON, and pregnant sows suffer gestation abnormalities.

Although our understanding of the pathogen has greatly improved, the industry still lacks cultivars which effectively resist FHB. Resistance to the disease is multigenic and has proven a difficult target for breeders. Furthermore, the emergence and steady increase of a different strain of the pathogen might have a major impact on the industry as a whole. The new strain produces more mycotoxin. National and international limits on DON and Fusariumdamaged kernels (FDK) severely limit marketability. Finally, the price obtained for FHB-affected grain limits opportunities for western Canadian farmers and Canada to be competitive in the world market.

The presentation will provide a background to the problem of FHB in the Prairies with an emphasis on the pathogen: its survival, dispersal, and mode of infection. There will be discussion on disease symptoms in barley, oat and wheat and an examination of the best management practices to deal with the pathogen, including choice of the most tolerant varieties, rotation, and most effective fungicides.

Recent projects: • Monitoring leafhopper populations and phytoplasma diseases (oilseed and cereal crops, vineyards, small fruits).

• Phytoplasma detection, identification and characterization in plants and insects using molecular and electron microscopy techniques.

• Detection and identification of microbial symbionts in leafhopper vectors of phytoplasma.

• Study of novel approaches for phytoplasma disease control.

Presentation Summary:

Aster yellows (AY) diseases are caused by phytoplasmas, bacteria-like pathogens that live in the plant sap and are transmitted by sap-feeding insects, mostly leafhoppers. The main AY vector is the migratory leafhopper Macrosteles quadrilineatus that is blown in every spring with southern winds coming from the USA. A local population of M. quadrilineatus and other leafhopper species are also known to transmit AY but their abundance, geographical distribution and role in AY outbreaks are not known.

AY phytoplasmas can infect more than 200 plant species and are therefore the most widespread and common phytoplasma in Canada.

Depending on the plant species, AY phytoplasmas can induce chlorosis, phyllody (flowers transformed into leaf-like structures), witches’ broom and dwarfism. AY phytoplasmas are also known to modify the biology and behavior of their vectors, such as longevity, fecundity and feeding habit. The mechanisms by which phytoplasmas induce changes in plants and insects are not fully understood.

AY epidemics in Western Canada have increased in frequency and incidence over the past decade. Previously recorded outbreaks occured in 1957, 2000, 2007 and 2012. The 2012 AY outbreak has been the worst so far, with losses in seed production and quality expected to be very high in many crops. Phytoplasmas are difficult to control, as there are currently no chemicals that can kill the pathogen directly, no cultivars are known to be resistant and spraying to control the vector population is rarely an economical option. Also, because the epidemiology of AY is not fully understood, economic threshold or early warning systems are not available to producers.

This oral presentation will summarize information about phytoplasma biology and life cycle and will present some of the mechanisms by which phytoplasmas spread and modify plant and insect physiology. The latest results on the 2012 AY incidence in crops and vectors will be presented. Potential reasons to explain the increase of AY incidence and outbreak frequency during the past decade will be presented and discussed. Existing and potential control methods and present and future research projects will also be outlined.

The Nature of Soil Compaction and Remedy Dr. Jeff Schoenau is a professor of soil fertility in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan. He holds the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Soil Nutrient Management Chair in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

He was born in Saskatchewan and completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. His research, teaching and extension activities deal with soil fertility management, conservation and nutrient cycling. He also owns and operates a grain farm with his wife Lynne near Central Butte in south-central Saskatchewan.

Presentation Summary:

Soil compaction results from breakdown of soil aggregates and pores under load. Reduced porosity and increased density of soil can impede root growth and reduce water infiltration. In Saskatchewan, the many freeze-thaw and wet-dry cycles we experience help to naturally break up compacted soil. Implements can also be used to break through and loosen a compacted layer of soil, a process often termed “sub-soiling”. The effect of sub-soiling irrigated and dryland soils in a research project in south-central Saskatchewan is also covered in this presentation. Sub-soiling reduced soil density and increased water infiltration, with variable effects on final crop yield depending on site and environment. Wet conditions were not conducive to persistence of the effect of the sub-soiling operation.

The College of Agriculture & Bioresources is an associate member while a rep from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture sits on the Crop Production Week Committee in an advisory capacity.

Note that the Saskatchewan Ag Grads Association (SAGA) will once again be holding their events at TCU on Saturday, January 5.

Most of the Crop Week meetings, including the 2013 Special Session are being held at the Saskatoon Inn. Exceptions include the SAGA program centered at TCU Place and the SaskPulse agenda which includes events at both Prairieland Park and the Saskatoon Inn. Please note that the Tuesday session of Pulse Days is live at the Saskatoon Inn with a live video feed to Prairieland Park.

The meetings are designed to provide useful information on agronomics, the market outlook and policy issues. The agendas are included in this insert, but the individual association websites and cropweek.com are the best way to keep track of any updates.
