2011 CROP PRODUCTION SHOW
Lori Cates The 28th Annual Western Canadian Crop Production Show will showcase leading-edge technology, services, and products in Prairieland Park’s world class trade and convention facilities, encompassing over 220,000 square feet of indoor space and expanded outdoor space. Previous years’ exhibitors realize the importance of this show, requesting additional space to launch new products and equipment. Industry groups appreciate the newly renovated state-of-the-art conference and meeting facilities. These factors combine to offer an event that is larger than ever before. Produced by Saskatoon Prairieland Park, with the assistance of a volunteer committee the show continues to attract an audience from a wide geographic base. Our commitment to maintaining an event that is focused on crop production has proven successful - evident by our many long-time exhibitors and the continual attendance of qualified patrons. The industry as a whole has embraced Saskatoon each January. The Western Canadian Crop Production Show, in conjunction with Crop Production Week’s in-depth information and industry meetings, has created a week of activity that attracts the true leaders in Canadian grain production.
On behalf of our entire staff, I hope you enjoy your visit to Prairieland Park, and that your experience at the Western Canadian Crop Production Show is both interesting and informative.

Welcome to the 2011 Western Canadian Crop Production Show!! Thank you for spending your important time with us, we’re sure you’ll find tremendous value again at this year’s show. Each year we present the most advanced equipment, technology and suppliers to help you successfully manage your farm operation. We are again pleased to offer several timely and interesting topics at the Bayer CropScience Information Theatre including discussion on micronutrients, herbicide resistant weeds and specific crop diseases that may be more evident due to the unusually wet conditions this year. Building on last year’s success, the Combine Clinic is now running two days and is sure to sell out. This event was an over whelming achievement last year, and will again provide producers with some terrific information about operating and adjusting their combines efficiently. New for the show this year is more dedicated and specialized meeting and conference space. Watch for events hosted throughout the building, as companies offer on site training and seminars. The Western Canadian Crop Production Show attracts large crowds each year, offering the agriculture industry tremendous opportunities to view the latest advancements in products, and technology, and farming methods. On behalf of the show committee, Prairieland Park, it’s staff and all our volunteers, thank you again for attending the show.

PRESENT & FUTURE TRENDS
The incidence of herbicideresistant weeds in Western Canada is continually increasing. The most prevalent cases of resistance include Group 1- or 2-resistant wild oats, Group 1-resistant green foxtail, and a number of Group 2-resistant broadleaf weeds, including kochia, wild mustard, cleavers, among others. Resistant populations of Group 1 wild oats in Manitoba, Group 2 spiny annual sowthistle in Alberta, and Group 2 kochia throughout the Prairies now outnumber susceptible populations. Reliance on these two herbicide
groups in Western Canadian cropping systems has resulted in a high selection pressure for resistance in weed populations. The introduction of new herbicides with new modes of action has slowed considerably over the past 25 years. Therefore, farmers should not expect another new herbicide to be just around the corner to solve their resistant weed problem. We all have to utilize the currently available tools as effectively as possible. The current status of glyphosate resistance in Canada and around the world will be discussed, and ways we can best preserve this important weed management tool. In addition, best management practices will be outlined to assist farmers to delay or manage herbicide-resistant weed populations.

Micronutrients in Western Canada
2011 CROP PRODUCTION SHOW
Micronutrients From the exploratory surveys in the late sixties to the flurry of research activities in the early and mid eighties in response to a systematic introduction of micronutrient products in western Canada and continuing on to the present, micronutrients are constantly becoming an integral part of farmers’ fertilization plans. The initial focus on identifying areas of micronutrient deficiencies was shifted to identifying suitable products and has culminated in drawing appropriate micronu-
trient fertilizers practices. Today, although the issue of suitable micronutrient products has for the most part been resolved and although there are a lot of “real” micronutrient deficiencies throughout western Canada, the problem remains in the form of unjustifiable application recommendations based on unsubstantiated fertilizer practices. A review of the scientifically established soil and plant testing criteria to identify micronutrient deficiencies in western Canada and the appropriate fertilizer practices will be presented adhering to the 4R nutrient stewardship principle (Right Source applied at the Right Time, Right Place and at the Right Rate).

Either way you look at it, Certified seed opens the doors to new opportunities for success. Efficient use of inputs, quality assurance, new markets – it all starts with Certified seed. Why settle for less?

2011 CROP PRODUCTION SHOW
White Mold The 2010 season was a challenge for growers in Saskatchewan, with various issues arising from the excess moisture. Observations by growers and agronomists as well as during basic disease surveys conducted by Saskatchewan Agriculture and collaborators, and submissions to the Crop Protection Laboratory in Regina, back up the view that wet seasons bring an increase of plant diseases. Reports of isolated cases and/or widespread incidence plant diseases in 2010 included the ascochyta complex on pea
crops; ascochyta blight, anthracnose, sclerotinia stem rot (white mould), botrytis grey mould, and stemphylium blight on lentil crops; sclerotinia stem rot on canola crops; fusarium head blight and leaf spotting diseases on cereals. In this presentation, we will discuss the resulting potential impact on pathogen levels and disease risk for next year and the ongoing importance of integrated pest management. Crop rotation, variety selection, seed quality, seedling health, crop scouting, and cultural and chemical control measures will be important in 2011 – as with any other year. As always the weather will be the primary determinant of the disease forecast for the coming season.

perfect opportunity to begin this process. . . . in early January. Visitors can speak with seed distributors, crop protection and fertilizer representatives, and grain marketers to assist them in making their planting decisions as well as purchase the equipment technology required for the coming year.

2011 Edition of Crop Production Week
January 8 - 15 in SASKATOON Crop Production Week 2011 begins January 8. The 2011 edition of Crop Production Week will run from Saturday, January 8 to Saturday, January 15 in Saskatoon. All of the main cropbased commodity organizations in the province have meetings and they cooperate to hold a Wednesday evening Special Session. A new organization has joined Crop Production Week – the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association, which will hold its meeting on Thursday, January 13. It should also be noted that the Saskatchewan Fruit
Growers meeting has been changed from two days to just Saturday. Most of the Crop Week meetings, including the 2011 Special Session are at the Saskatoon Inn. Exceptions include the Saskatchewan Ag Grads program centered at TCU Place, the Pulse agenda which includes events at Prairieland Park and the Saskatoon Inn, and the Saskatchewan Canola Growers Association meeting which has been moved to Prairieland Park. Please note that the Tuesday session of Pulse Days is live at the Saskatoon Inn with a live video feed to Prairieland Park. This year, Hall A at Prairieland Park is being utilized. Since this is a somewhat smaller space, registration for the Prairieland location will be more limited than in previous years. Pre-registration is advised.
The organizations participating in Crop Production Week 2011 include: w Saskatchewan Agricultural Graduates Association
w Saskatchewan Seed Growers Association
w Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission
w Saskatchewan Mustard Development Commission
w Saskatchewan Winter Cereals Development Commission
w SaskCanola
w Canaryseed Development Commission of Saskatchewan
w Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association
w Saskatchewan Pulse Growers
w Canadian Wheat Board
w Saskatchewan Oat Development Commission The meetings are designed to provide useful information on agronomics, the market outlook and policy issues. The agenda is included in this supplement, but the website is the best way to keep track of ongoing changes. Some of the meetings have pre-registration, but for most you just register at the door. Registration information is posted on the website. Just click on the “Registration” button. For 2011, the Wednesday evening Special Session returns to the Saskatoon Inn. The session features Drew Lerner on World Weather, Inc. of Topeka, Kansas presenting Weather Outlook 2011. Drew’s weather forecasts have gained quite a following on the Canadian Prairies. A 2011 subscription to World Weather, Inc. growing season forecasts will be the door prize for the evening.
32 CROP PRODUCTION WEEK
w Saskatchewan Canola Growers Association w Saskatchewan Fruit Growers Association The Special Session will start at 7:00 pm. There’s no charge to attend and after the formal presentation and questions have concluded, there will be complimentary refreshments and dainties along with a cash bar. The Western Canadian Crop Production Show runs in conjunction with Crop Production Week. This industry leading trade show goes from January 10 to 13 at Prairieland Park. For the latest information on both events, check out www.cropweek.com. From this common portal, you can find information on the Crop Week meetings or the Crop Show exhibitors. As you read through all the Crop Week meeting agendas on the following pages, hopefully you’ll find many topics that are relevant and useful to your operation. See you in Saskatoon.
