Precision agriculture tools help producers make the most from their least Imagine converting the poorest areas on the farm into the highest producing acres. Wade Mitchell doesn’t need to imagine it. He did it four years ago as a small-scale experiment on his 2,500 acre farm in east-central Iowa. Mitchell says his real time kinetics equipped scraper scooped eroded topsoil from field drains and spread it uniformly on the tops of eroded knolls. Although he tried the technique on two different fields, one with a pair of knolls showed the greatest improvement. Each knoll measured 3.6 acres and had traditionally averaged only 16.5 bushels of soybeans per acre. The lowest yield was 5.15 bu., with the highest being less than 20 bu. They are designated as areas 4 and 5 on a coloured field map. Overall average for the whole field was 26 bu., with the best areas hitting 34.5 bu. After moving eroded soil from the surface drains to the eroded knolls, the soybean yield for the knolls exceeded 35 bu. “We started thinking about doing this experiment after looking at some aerial photos of the farm taken in the 1930s and the 1950s,” said Mitchell. “Those old photos showed thin areas that matched the low yields we’ve been seeing on our combine’s yield monitor. We wanted to see if there was something we could do about it.” Mitchell pulled a number of soil samples, from eight inches down to 16 inches, creating an accurate soil profile of the two knolls. He also sampled the soil that had moved into

their surface drains. This soil came from the central drain, designated as area 6. The results were not surprising. The knolls were less than two percent organic matter. Area 6 was 4.2 percent organic matter. Cation exchange capacity was under 10.6 for the knolls and 23.1 for the good soil. Mitchell calculated how much good soil he needed to haul to the knolls. The soil lower in the profile on the knolls was poor quality, but he figured if he added six inches of good topsoil, he might bring areas 4 and 5 up to the field average. w w w . p r o d u c e r . c o m

“Think about it. It’s the very best topsoil that ends up in the drains. It’s that way on any farm. “Soil in the drains has so much organic matter and so much water holding capacity. Moving it from the drains to the knolls totally changed the way those two spots behaved. “They went from the very lowest yielding parts of the (field) to the very highest yielding parts of the field. It worked far better than we would have ever guessed.” Mitchell said he plans to use the technique on other spots. While fixing 3.6 acres may not seem significant to farmers in Western Canada, land prices in Iowa are about $6,000 per acre. Study the maps and farmer aerial photos to see if there are spots you can fix. It has a lot to do with how much you should pay for land.” Mitchell’s ancestors homesteaded the farm in 1871. He thinks the knolls could have been eroded before that, adding that soil erosion isn’t necessarily the man-made catastrophe many people make it out to be. It’s a natural occurrence on the Great Plains. “The Plains used to burn off with those giant prairie fires. The surface had no protection. If there was a big rain or a big wind storm right after a fire, the soil would erode easily.” Even with a combination of no till and strip till, Mitchell knows that a catastrophic amount of rain can haul a lot of his best soil down the Mississippi River. As a preventive measure, all the surface drains have a thick grass base to catch the soil before it runs into the creeks and rivers. The Western Producer

Autosteer planter Mitchell began intercropping in 2005. He alternates a 30foot wide strip of corn with a 30-foot wide strip of soybeans that get planted a week later. The benefits were obvious. Nonintercropped corn on the Mitchell farm averaged 200 bu. In the fields where corn strips were interspersed with soybean strips, the corn averaged 225 bu. But the scheme demands extreme accuracy from the tractor and planter. If planting isn’t perfect, running a 30-foot header in the fall becomes a real nightmare. Mitchell said many machines will drift in the field. To meet the need for better row accuracy, he installed steering tires on the planter he uses for corn and beans. “A lot of potato growers use John Deere or the Trimble True Tracker GPS steering systems on their planters. Putting steering on the planting machine gives you a tremendous advantage, not just for row croppers, but also for broad acre crops seeded with an air drill. “There’s no reason you can’t have automated steering on your tractor, commodity cart and your drill or planter.” Mitchell also installed a steering coulter on his anhydrous applicator. The coulter mounts on the hitch and steers hydraulically. “This prevents it from wobbling. And it keeps the tanks on the controlled traffic lane between the rows. “Some tractor manufacturers have started offering steering hitches that do the same thing. I think you need implement steering if you’re doing controlled traffic.” Mitchell began converting to controlled traffic in 2000 when he bought his first GPS autosteer system. Since then, every implement on the farm has been outfitted with autosteer. The traffic patterns require two distinct lanes, covering about 17 percent of the arable land. No machinery is allowed off the lanes. “We had one field that had been in total traffic control for

Single row yield comparisons on the Mitchell farm have revealed that corn yields can vary as much as 100 bu. per acre within a 12-row strip. Although traffic may not be the only factor in this discrepancy, row-by-row yield checks help define compaction and the other causes of yield loss. Wade and his son, Clay, regularly conduct field trials to fine tune their farming operation. The list of in-field studies includes soil density, plant populations, plant spacing and fertilizer placement. “We want data from individual rows. If you come in with a big combine that does 12 or 16 rows, all your variations get thrown together. “By using a single row monitor, we can find out what works

and what doesn’t.” One big lesson the Mitchells have learned is to check the anhydrous knives at least once a year. “We’ve had brand new anhydrous knives that have a 50 percent variation from one to the other. They’re new, right from the factory, and they’re plugged up.” He said it’s pointless to think about precision farming until these details have been addressed. Another of those details is the accuracy of your GPS. Mitchell said that the north-south lines on the John Deere system converge to follow the curvature of the earth. “The John Deere lines hit the North Pole dead centre. “But the Trimble lines run straight. They don’t converge. They follow a cylindrical projection of the earth’s surface called the Mercator projection, like those flat cut-out maps of the earth. “You can standardize your own farm with one system or the other, but if you hire a custom operator for seeding or spraying or harvest, his maps won’t match your maps.” He said that on the typically small fields in the cornsoybean belt, producers can work around the minor discrepancy if they’re aware of it. But on the Prairies where farmers often have a two or three mile run, the divergence can be significant. “It’s something that needs to be resolved. We need a standardized criteria that every manufacturer follows. If we’re going to do precision farming, then we need to be precise.” The Mitchell Farm is more than just an efficient, high performance farming operation. Wade and Clay, both engineers, also view it as a giant research project. They are continuously exploring new technology that will help them, and other farmers, become more productive.

The new Veris MSP3 simultaneously measures electrical conductivity, soil pH and organic matter while logging the data on a GPS map. It does all this on the go at six m.p.h. Dubbed by some as a soil lab on wheels, the MSP3 had its first public showing at the InfoAg precision farming workshop in Springfield last month. Veris representative Paul Drummond said advances in soil analysis technology have allowed the company to turn its original single purpose EC cart into a micro, multitasking mobile soil lab. “We’ve blended three distinctly different technologies into one field unit,” said Drummond. The new model is an extension of the electrical conductivity (EC) mapping machine Veris has sold to agronomists and researchers since 1997. “MSP stands for mobile sensor platform. When we designed the original cart, the idea was that we’d gradually add more sensors as technology evolved. “The coulters still measure EC on the go, but we’ve added onthe-go soil pH and organic matter (OM). As you travel across the field, the system geo-references the exact spots where all three readings are taken.” Drummond said data from all three sources can be blended The Western Producer

later into a map that provides a highly accurate picture of the field, thus allowing more precise management. However, in most cases the pH map is a standalone used strictly to make lime recommendations in regions where that is a normal practice. Most MSP operators travel at five to six m.p.h., but Veris says accurate measurements can be taken at speeds as high as 12 m.p.h. for EC and OM mapping. Mapping for pH must be done at five to six m.p.h. so core material doesn’t fly out the back of the machine. Drummond said the massive quantity of data collection points produce a crisper field map than a four or 2.5 acre grid system. “With typical 2.5 acre grid sampling, cores are pulled once every 330 feet and software fills in the gaps with what it thinks should be there,” he said. “But university studies in Iowa show that pH within a 2.5 acre grid can vary as much as it does across the entire field.”

Soil pH According to the Iowa study reported in theAgronomy Journal, soil pH varied from 5.4 to eight over 480 feet in most transects.

When it’s at work in the field, the fully automated Soil Manager references the pH information to the exact spot the sample was taken, allowing the agronomist the opportunity to manage low or high pH areas differently from the rest of the field.

“In some sections, soil pH varied about two pH units over a 40 foot distance,” it said. The Veris Soil Manager takes 10 seconds from the time a core is pulled until it provides a pH reading. The MSP operator continues to drive the GPS controlled field pattern while this is happening. “Soil Manager first came to the market in 2003 as an on-the-go sampler mounted to the MSP,” Drummond said. “It has only one moving component.” The parallel linkage is hooked to a hydraulic cylinder. The controller automatically sends a message to the cylinder, which pushes the sampler shoe down into the soil to a predetermined depth. The core is delivered to the analysis instrument through a two-inch tube. The sample comes up and pushes against two ion selective electrodes, but they don’t determine pH directly,” he said. “What they do is measure hydrogen ions in the soil. By knowing the hydrogen ion level, we extrapolate soil pH. That’s because pH is really nothing more than a measure of the presence of hydrogen. All this is taking place in the field, on the Mobile Sensor Platform, while you’re driving the field.” The water tank mounted to the MSP3 is necessary because high-pressure nozzles must wash all residual soil off the electrodes before the next core arrives. More EC and OM readings are collected than pH readings, but Drummond said the system still collects eight to 10 pH samples per acre. “That’s far better than the one pH reading every 2.5 or four acres you get with a conventional grid system.” He said pH readings are geo-referenced to the spot where the core was pulled rather than the spot where the chemical analysis was completed. “The pH Soil Manager is designed so consultants can do a better job of capturing the true pH variability in the field. It’s geared more toward areas of low PH,” he said. “But at the same time, even in areas of typically high pH, there can be some low pH areas, and vice versa. Certainly the last thing anyone wants to do is to apply lime in high pH areas of the field. The Soil Manager can help avoid this.”

Organic matter Drummond said the OpticMapper, which measures organic matter on the go, is the latest innovation from Veris. The concept behind OM on the go is similar to normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) imagery taken from satellites, except OM images comes from within the Earth instead of from above. It’s based on the fact that soil colour correlates with organic matter. The ability to measure light absorption and light reflectance is the key, whether the operator is measuring vegetative density or soil structure. The instrument uses visual (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) reflectance. The data is then processed by a spectrophotometer developed by Veris to convert soil reflectance into a value that is logged on the field map. Veris says spectrometers are used in milling, rating forages, meat processing and other food related processes. “Soil with strong CH (carbon-hydrogen), NH (nitrogen-hydrogen) and OH (oxygen-hydrogen) bonds absorb more light, which is why wet soil and soil with high organic matter looks darker, even to the naked eye,” says Veris’ website. “ And VIS-NIR spectral data is more powerful than the human eye.” Drummond said it’s merely a matter of mounting a module beneath the surface, facing down, and pulling it through the soil like a hoe type opener at six m.p.h. Just as NDVI images tell us about vegetative variability on the w w w . p r o d u c e r . c o m

surface, the subterranean images can be extrapolated to give an accurate reading on organic matter in the soil. Veris puts the OpticMapper where the opener would normally mount on a single row corn planter. It’s a parallel linkage unit that provides accurate depth control and uses the regular coulters and trash managers to remove surface residue. Drummond said consistent depth is critical to avoid incorrect readings caused by soil moisture. Also, the OpticMapper needs to run deep enough that the light sensor isn’t affected by sunlight. It must be like a photo darkroom. The optic module is mounted in a steel plate that travels as deep as three inches underground. The light points straight down. The unit also has a sapphire window to protect the optics as it is dragged through the soil. Veris shines two different wavelengths through the window into the soil mass: VIS and NIR. The optic sensor measures the reflectance of the light and sends the data back to the console. The percentage of light absorption has now been logged at specific spots throughout the field. “We know that lighter coloured soils have high reflectance. They don’t absorb much light. These are the sandier and lighter soils with lower organic matter content,” Drummond said. “And the darker coloured soils have low reflectance. They absorb more light. These are the soils with higher organic content. We go to the geo-referenced points with the highest reflectance and pull cores for the lab. Then go to the geo-referenced point with the least reflectance and pull cores.” When the results come back from the soil lab, the operator

assigns the correct OM designations to the two extremes and all grades of variability in between. Correlations to the lab results are extremely high. If the lab says the highest OM is four percent and the data shows this reading at 100 points on the field, then the MSP3 operator assigns that four percent value to those specific points. At the other extreme, if the lab says the 100 points with the lowest reading have only two percent OM, then those points are assigned a two percent OM. All the other readings fall into place between the two extremes. Drummond said the triple tasking machine accomplishes two things for agronomists and their customers: it reduces the number of samples that must be sent to the soil lab, which saves time and money, and it provides more data collection points in the field. “You get what we call dense data. The whole field is blanketed with data collection points, so your maps have better accuracy.” Many Veris clients also add RTK topography mapping by installing an add-on RTK console that can be programmed to take elevation readings at the points where other readings are recorded. That means one trip across the field can create four layers of data, creating an attractive package for producers who are serious in their precision farming endeavors. The fully equipped MSP3 with EC, pH and OM carries a list price of $34,000 US. The unit that most prairie agronomists buy eliminates the Soil Manager pH sensor, which lowers the price to $24,700. Tool intertrets soil salinity While Kansas-based Veris Technologies gets the agricultural attention, few people know that a Canadian company was the first to manufacture a soil electrical conductivity instrument. Geonics Limited of Mississauga, Ont., manufactured its first electromagnetic induction geophysical instrument in 1962. It was the EM15, and since then the EM series has become the staple tool of researchers and soil scientists worldwide. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s played a vital role in understanding salinity on agricultural soil, but Geonics representative Mike Catalano said agriculture has actually been a small fraction of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business over the past half century. Other uses include mineral and petroleum exploration, measuring thickness of sea ice, forensics, metal detection, locating brine in oil fields and military applications. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Through the 1960s and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;70s, many of our instruments were mounted on aircraft,â&#x20AC;? said Catalano. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The device wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even close to the Earth surface. But in the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;70s and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;80s, we began to evolve to ground based devices. The more popular EM38 came out in 1980. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The advantage of electromagnetic induction is that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even need to have the circuits contact the soil. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need steel coulters.â&#x20AC;? Catalano said the EM38-MK2 can be mounted to an allterrain vehicle, pulled on a small cart or carried by the handle. Eliminating the need for soil contact makes horsepower requirements minimal. Circuitry employed in the EM series is different from the technology that Veris uses. Electromagnetic induction employs a transmitter coil that sends a current into the soil and a receiver coil that measures how much current made it through the complete circuit. Saline soil serves as a better electrical conductor, so the receiver gets a stronger signal, which is de-coded into a salinity rating.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois — The new RapidProbe soil sampling machine pulls twice as many cores per hour as a man on a quad. RapidProbe is the latest high performance soil sampler from Ag-Robotics, the company that produces the tracked on-the-go AutoProbe soil sampler. “AutoProbe was developed for large input dealers and suppliers who have a big footprint that requires sampling,” says AgRobotics chief executive officer Jeff Burton. Capable of pulling 20 cores per minute on the go, the original Auto-Probe is unchallenged as the top performing soil sampling unit. Burton said once AutoProbe was on the market, the company saw a rapidly growing demand for soil sampling machinery that would be more efficient than units on four-wheelers and pickups. “RapidProbe is still a stop and go machine. It doesn’t keep rolling like the rubber track AutoProbe. But it still pulls about half as many cores per hour as our AutoProbe,” says Burton. “The important point is that it pulls twice as many cores per hour as a man on a four-wheeler with a conventional probe. So it fits almost exactly in the middle of the market.” At a cost of $49,500, Burton says RapidProbe is aimed at large farmers, consultants and smaller input dealers who don’t sample enough acres to justify the lease/licence arrangement for AutoProbe. A unique feature of RapidProbe is that it pulls two cores simultaneousl y, one from the left side of the machine and one from the right. Once cores are pulled, the auger mixes the soil for each sample as that soil travels forward to the cab. The auger delivers the sample directly to the operator and automatically drops it into the waiting bag. The operator only needs to seal and label the bag. RapidProbe is fully GPS compatible, so all samples are georeferenced. The Kubota four-wheel drive RTV easily adapts to autosteer to ensure accuracy of the sample points. The RapidProbe RTV is equipped with GPS and autosteer so it drives itself to the right location to draw the sample. It stops momentarily while the twin left and right side probes take their core samples, then it proceeds to the next prescribed spot. Meanwhile, the RapidProbe has blended the sample, dropped it into a paper bag and geo-referenced the spot where the probes entered the soil.
