Batoche National Historic Site: Visitors to Batoche National Historic Site viewing the North Saskatchewan River.
In 2011, Parks Canada Agency invites you to join in the 100th anniversary celebrations being held across the nation. The national parks service, the first of its kind in the world, was created in 1911 to protect what would become today’s impressive network of 42 national parks, 167 national historic sites and four national marine conservation areas.
4
Saskatchewan’s Prince Albert and Grasslands national parks and Batoche, Fort Battleford, Fort Walsh and Motherwell national historic sites will showcase some of the best that Parks Canada has to offer this summer. Prince Albert National Park is located within an hour’s drive of Prince Albert and made up of two diverse ecosystems: aspen parkland with native fescue grasslands and boreal forests full of lakes and wetlands. You can take a wagon or trail ride by horse and view free-roaming plains bison or paddle a canoe along the scenic Narrows and camp under the stars. If speed is your preference, boating is allowed as well as catch and release fishing. The Park is home to the only fully protected white pelican nesting colony in Canada, one of only two free-roaming plains bison herds in North America and arguably, one of the more colourful and controversial conservationists known- Grey Owl. Englishman Archibald Belaney pretended to be a First Nation man and went by the name Grey Owl. He became famous in the years after WWI when he turned in his trapping gear for a fountain pen, publishing books and lecturing around the world about saving the wilderness. Beaver Lodge, Grey Owl’s cabin, still stands in

the park and can be reached by hiking trail or canoe. You can explore a replica of his cabin in The Friends of the Park Bookstore if a day at the beach and in the village of Waskesiu with its shops and cafes is more your style. At Grasslands National Park, journey into prehistory with a walking tour of the Rock Creek Badlands and Wood Mountain Uplands where fossil beds still hold the remains of dinosaurs and ancient teepee rings are found. In the Frenchman River Valley on the west side of the park, keep a watchful eye for endangered species such as burrowing owls, short-horned lizards, sage grouse, plains bison and the most recently reintroduced animal- the black-footed ferret. Created in 1981, Grasslands is one of Canada’s newer parks. Located in south-western Saskatchewan, you can reach the East Block of the park via highway 18 near the town of Glentworth. To enter the West Block, head to the town of Val Marie and have a chat with our park staff at the visitor centre for recent updates on park activity. government forces and the Metis led by Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont. Situated along the South Saskatchewan River, a visit to Batoche will find you singing and jigging, beading, finger weaving and rug making. Also enjoy hiking, bird watching and canoeing. Fort Battleford National Historic Site is along the Yellowhead highway just south of the Town of Battleford in central Saskatchewan. This North West Mounted Police post was the base for the Canadian Governments military operations during the 1885 Conflict and was involved at the battles of Duck Lake, Cut Knife Hill, Fort Pitt and Frenchman Butte. The fort provided safety for 500 settlers who fled inside its protective walls. You can dress up as either a prisoner or a Northwest Mounted Policeman during your visit then try out all of the 19th century chores and training drills that people did when Fort Battleford was active. You can even fire a canon (age restriction)! Ghost tours are a popular activity at the Fort and are scheduled once each month throughout the summer. Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site is a small working farm one hour east of Regina preserved to highlight the life and times of Saskatchewan’s first Minister of Agriculture, W.R. Motherwell. Come and watch as an old-time crew harvests the crop with a 1911 Hart Parr tractor and a 1920’s Case thresher. Then, head in for a delicious homemade meal and live musical entertainment. Fort Walsh has a rich policing history. This is where the internationally recognized image of the RCMP riding mounted on black horses first became a tradition and where Canadian law was introduced in the West. This fort in the Cypress Hills was also a gathering place for First Nations, fur and whiskey traders and Métis. Through diplomacy and conciliation, the Northwest Mounted Police and local First Nations avoided much of the violence that often characterized other frontiers. For fun, children can arrest their parents and then take part in a mock trial. Watch historic weapons demonstrations, working horses, eat fresh baking at the cook tent, or go geo-caching, hiking and horseback riding. As Parks Canada celebrates its 100th year of national parks service, we invite you to visit us and experience the many outdoor and family-fun activities that each park and historic site has to offer. Moose Jaw - The former Joyner department store was the western distributor of Levis jeans. The stock would sometimes exceed one million dollars. It had been reopened as a Gift/Craft/ Souvenir store. Tragically, this store and several nearby historical buildings recently burned down. This store also owned the largest Cash Cable Car system (over 1000 feet length) that was still operational. The only other one in working order is in Europe or China and is between 600 and 700 feet. Disney had offered the Joyner family $600,000 for the system so they could put it into their Euro-Disney complex, but the family honoured the wishes of the original store owner that the system remain in Moose Jaw. 10

Eco-tourism
Destinations Offer Adventure, Relaxation
Forest House Wilderness Lodge: Spectacular views of nature may be seen in every direction at the Forest House Wilderness Lodge.
There’s an old folk story about a fellow who searches the world to find diamonds, only to be disappointed in his quest. Returning home, he discovers them in his own back yard.
14
That story could well relate to those of us who live in Saskatchewan. You don’t have to leave the province to find a rare vacation gem – they’re here in abundance. Start by visiting some of the amazing eco-tourist sites we have right in our own back yard.
Forest House Wilderness Lodge
Forest House Wilderness Lodge (877-511-2726), situated in the Boreal forest eco-system, is a secluded getaway that requires use of a boat or aircraft to get there; it’s about 130 kilometres north of La Ronge and is open in the summer and fall months. The owner says it’s so remote you may not see another person once you’re there, other than the Wilderness Lodge staff. What you will see is the natural beauty of the Boreal forest, teeming with unique plants and wildlife, and several pristine lakes ready to explore. With little development in the area, you can literally lose yourself in nature, and feel the same
See Scenic Saskatchewan
sense of awe felt by the first people who set eyes on this beautiful part of Saskatchewan. There are lakes for canoeing, and wildlife to view in their natural habitat in the approximately five kilometres of hiking trails through the forest. Arrange an interpretive walk with the staff at Forest House; bring out your wildlife reference books and make a list of the plants and animals you find. You may be lucky enough to spot a bald eagle or a loon, and many species of ducks. There are also black bears, woodland caribou, deer, moose, and wolves that travel through the area – but be careful not to get too close to these majestic, wild creatures. A small unnamed lake is only a stone’s throw away from the main lodge and two cabins that make up Forest House. There’s an interesting story that goes with the name of the lodge. About 30 years ago, original builders Deb Peters and Rick Kolstad had an idea to build a vacation getaway without damaging the precious ecosystem of the area. They decided to make

the buildings from lumber harvested from the local forest. The new owner says the accommodations are charming and welcoming, and can host 10-12 people in total. Eco-friendly features include power derived from solar collectors and a self-composting septic system. The mail lodge includes two bedrooms and a bathroom. The kitchen, living room/library and dining room have picturesque views of the garden and lake. A large deck and sauna by the water provide more places for relaxation. Being out all day in such beautiful surroundings, taking in the sites, is certain to make you hungry. Fresh and satisfying meals are included with your stay at Forest House. There is an organic garden on location that supplies the fixins’ for the salads, and the surrounding woods provide wild blueberries, cranberries and saskatoons. Much of the food prepared is indigineous to the area – steak, fish, lamb, chicken, wild rice and a local favourite – cattail soup. The staff will help you gather fruits and vegetables for your meal if you’re interested.
Land of the Loon Resort and Conference Centre
Another great eco-tourist destination in the boreal forest is Land of the Loon Resort and Conference Centre (306-982-4478),
which is about a 2.5 hour drive north of Saskatoon. Here, where nature is the star attraction, you will shed your stress much like the tamarack trees shed their needs in autumn. On Anglin Lake, the mournful call of the loon, the rustle of moose in the brush, and the cry of the bald eagle will clear your head of the noise of modern life. Deer have been known to wander through the resort grounds, and in the winter you may spot wolf tracks on the snowcovered lakes. Land of the Loon is only a few feet from the shore of Jacobsen’s Bay. There is ample space between the white spruce cabins to make you feel you are immersed in the wilderness. The owners of the resort love to share their extensive knowledge of the area and its attractions. There are daily boat tours of Anglin Lake, which is actually a chain of six lakes that cover 3,791 acres along the southeastern corner of Prince Albert National Park. Among North American lakes of its size, Anglin Lake has the highest population of nesting loons. If you listen and watch closely, you can hear their distinctive call and see their incredible diving and flying skills. There are many recreational actvities to enjoy at this unspoiled wilderness destination. Canoeing, bike Continued on page 16

riding, hiking (on your own or with a guide), wildlife viewing, fishing (walley, northern pike and perch) and lake swimming are only a few of the choices. In winter, add cross-country skiing, dog sledding, ice skating, snowmobiling and snowshoeing to the itinerary. Across the lake, Prince Albert National Park is home to abundant wildlife. Nearly 166 km of backcountry trails thread through prime bird watching terrain; close to 200 species populate the area in the summertime. Within the park are more than 350 archeological sites and 12 federal heritage buildings – so plan to stay in the area for at least a week or two to take in all of the sites.
Eco-Village
Much further south in Saskatchewan is an interesting eco-site. Situated across the highway from the town of Craik is the Eco Village and its star attraction, the Eco Centre. Tours of the Eco Centre (306-270-5316) will help you discover more about this unique structure. Made of straw bales, the Eco Centre is heated geo-thermally and has an air exchange unit that uses special earth tubes to heat the air. Its many architectural features have been designed to take advantage of passive solar power in a very unusal way. Listen to the tour guide speak of the many green
16
See Scenic Saskatchewan
features at the site, and you’ll begin to appreciate the importance of becoming eco-friendly in your own choices. Inside the Eco Centre is the Solar Garden, which is well known for making tasty bison burgers. The new owners are revamping the menu so that more and more local produce will be used that is organic and free-range. Tours are available year round. Take in some of the other sites nearby, such as the bird reserve, golf course, swimming pool, and Craik and District Regional Park with camping and tenting.
Rosefield Church Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast
Turning our eyes to another part of the province, you will find eco-friendly accommodations at Rosefield Church Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast (306-298-2030), right on the edge of Canada’s world-class Grasslands National Park. Drive from Regina to Swift Current, head south to the US border to Val Marie (a village of about 150 people), then continue south about 35 kilometres and you’ll reach the hamlet of Rosefield - the bed and breakfast is very close by. The owners live in an old church on the grounds; a guest house for two people is available to rent on a daily, weekly or monthly basis from April to October/November, depending on demand.
ROSEFIELD BED & BREAKFAST: The church and guest house at Rosefield Bed and Breakfast - note the solar panels on and near the buildings.
This is a tourism destination that may, at first glance, look short of attractions, but actually there’s plenty to see and do. Most of the people, who visit from all over the world, are photographers, birdand star-watchers, and those seeking the “peace of the prairies.” Several artists have moved to the area due to the inspiring views of nature. It’s very remote, but that’s what makes it so desirable. Here you can remove the mantle of stress and replace it with a much lighter garment. It’s a peaceful place to explore – and an effective medicine for the fast-paced world we live in. In the summer months, the area’s population grows as scientists from all over the world visit here, intrigued by the only patch of native prairie in North America. Spanning 500 square kilometres in1333 size, Generic the grasslands host an incredible number of plants and Riderville 7.125x4.75 2/22/07 9:43 AM animals indigeneous to this region. Snow owls, buffalo and black
footed ferrets are exclusive to the area, along with several prairie dog colonies. Look up and around you and see golden eagles, Swanson hawks, meadowlarks and “everything from pelicans and cormirans” that inhabit the dugouts and lakes, depending on water levels. There is work underway to make Grasslands National Park part of a huge buffalo range that will wind down to a world heritage site in Missouri. If you make time for exploring, you’ll be treated to teepee rings and medicine wheels, wagon tracks and old weathered abandoned homesteads. Hiking, biking and tenting are optional past times. About an hour’s drive away are Eastend and Gravelbourg, with more to see. The dinosaur interpretive centre in Eastend’s rugged badlands has a rare collection of dinosaur species on display. The cathedral in Gravelbourg will amaze you with its grand architecture. Gravelbourg has been called a “rare cultural gem” and begs to be explored. The entire Rosefield Church Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast operation is run off the grid – with the owners making electricity using solar and wind power. When the sun goes down, this area holds the honour of having some of the darkest skies in the country; Grasslands National Park has been designated a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Society of Canada. Imagine the star-gazing that can be enjoyed on a clear night. Expect to hear the coyotes howling in the distance. Drink up the fresh air and just “be.” Can you imagine it? This is just a partial list of eco-friendly destinations in Saskatchewan. Dig up your own gems by scanning the Internet or phoning your local tourism office to see what other adventures lay just around the corner. See Scenic Saskatchewan
East Central Saskatchewan is also bursting with history. Every small town as well as our cities offer museums and historical sites to suit all interests. Kamsack and area is every history buffs dream with it’s numerous historical sites and museums such as Fort Livingston, Verigin’s National Doukhobour Heritage Museum and Kamsack’s Powerhouse Museum – just to name a few. And don’t forget Yorkton’s Western Development Museum which hosts the Threshermen’s Show and Seniors’ Festival - July 30 and 31. At Humboldt visit The Original Telegraph Site - the first known building in the area was the Humboldt Telegraph Station which became an important communication link in the development of western Canada. The significance of the land is multifaceted, as it played an important role in the national story of communications, transportation, 1885 Resistance (Louis Riel), First Nations relations and the settlement of western Canada. If vintage vehicles spark your interest – we have two shows for you to attend this summer.
On Father’s Day Weekend visit Melfort’s annual Back to the 50’s Show and Shine at Memorial Park located in the city centre. Later in the summer, Watrous hosts their 19th Annual Fun Run Auto Show and Shine – July 24, 2011 which attracts 140 vintage and theme vehicles including antique tractors as well as family entertainment – for all ages and interests.
Art and Unique Displays
Watrous and Manitou Beach is enriched because of the many talented artists in the area. The Gallery on 3rd provides tourists and locals opportunities to enjoy wonderful art; another strength in the Watrous, Manitou Beach area. The Gallery on 3rd showcases local artists and touring exhibitions, while the adjoining Art Shoppe is where one can purchase art. Speaking of art, check out Melville’s silhouette collection while in the area. There are 17 different silhouette displays throughout the city and area – just try to find them all.
Festivals and Events
Don’t forget about the thrills and excitement of attending one of our annual events. Whether it be Preeceville’s Western Days July 15 – 17, 2011 which includes Gymkhana, Chuckwagon and Chariot Races, children events, slo pitch and fast ball tournaments and an open air dance, Yorkton’s Painted Hand Pow Wow - June 4 and 5 at the Gallagher Centre or their Canadian Professional Chuckwagon races, June 1012 and Tractor Pull Competition August 20th at the exhibition grounds you will be sure to be on the edge of your seat cheering on the competitors.
Golf Courses and Tournaments
If a challenging round of golf is your game, we have many options. Nipawin, known for its fabulous fishing spots, also is home of the beautifully landscaped but challenging Evergreen Golf Course. How about a little fishing and golf? If that sounds like fun you may want to participate in the Fins and Skins Two person team combined fish & golf tournament Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Rolling Pines Golf and Country Resort and Tobin Lake. Another golf tournament of interest is Pasquia Regional Park and Golf Course’s Race for The Ace -July 23rd. This hole in one golf tournament offers prizes between $5000-$10000 per hole.

1800s by the Russian military that is similar to horseshoes, but ankle bones of horses are used instead of pegs. Bunnock, or “bones”, was adopted by Germans living in Russia, and they brought the game with them when emigrating to Canada. The World Championship Bunnock Tournament with over 320 teams is held at Macklin Lake Regional Park during the August long weekend. This weekend has something for everyone in the family—in addition to the tournament, there are a variety of activities including live bands, juggling, face painting, food booths, children’s games, a Saturday night dance and Sunday pancake breakfast.
Westridge-GMC-Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Finals – Lloydminster
August 17-21 If you’re looking for serious action, you want to be in Lloydminster. An aggregate Champion will be declared after the first four days of heartstopping chuckwagon racing. The top four drivers in the CPCA standings after day four will
tangle for the sudden death CPCA Championship in the final race. Nearly 15,000 people pour into the Exhibition Grounds to cheer on as many as 40 wagons from Alberta and Saskatchewan as they compete for the CPCA finals. Come and enjoy the cabarets, beer gardens, pancake breakfasts, and outside displays. Camping is readily available.
Blueberry Festival – St. Walburg
August 27 If you think you’re passionate about wild blueberries, you need to commune with the folks in this community of almost 800, where they just can’t get enough of them. More than one tonne of wild blueberries are sold within the first two hours of the day, so don’t sleep in. This huge street fair that draws over 5,000 folks starts with eating, and ends with eating, but there’s a lot more. In between the pancake breakfast (blueberry, of course, with blueberry syrup) and the evening dinner, the street is busy with over 100 craft and food booths, a stage of musical entertainment, a Blueberry Tea (with elegant blueberry desserts), games for the whole family and a show and shine vehicle show.

A small town called Saltcoats, (16 miles south of Yorkton) has been titled the salamander capital of Canada. The town is nestled on the side of Anderson Lake which is where thousands and thousands (varies from year to year) of salamanders also call home. On rainy nights they can be seen making their trek from the water to land. It is a crazy sight to see so many lizards running across the roads.

Looking for a city bursting with not only opportunity but fun? Look no further than Regina. This summer Regina will play host to a number of returning annual events, festivals and attractions that are sure to be a hit for all residents and travellers alike! Regina invites you to experience the numerous amenities that give it a big city feel while maintaining small town hospitality. Start your visit to the Queen city early this year and take in some unique shopping. For six days in May starting on the 21, the unique Cathedral Area district will be jam-packed with the best in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, literary arts, and crafts. The Cathedral Arts Festival has something for everyone! Be sure to also stick around for the street fair that takes place on May 28. As the region becomes more and more diverse so does the offering at the annual celebration of food and culture, Mosaic. Running June 2 – 4, Mosaic presents unique foods and flavours, sights and customs of participating cultural groups packed into a pavilion setting. Experience the tastes, feel and sound of this dynamic event. Sporting enthusiasts can take in a variety of activities that are happening in and around the city this summer. Regina will play host to Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On!. This event has been touted as Canada’s most amazing street hockey tournament. Play On! 2011 will take place June 11-12 in the

parking lots of the Southland Shopping Centre. Don’t miss out on Canada’s largest dry land farm technology shows, the Western Canada Farm Progress Show held at Evraz Place on June 1417. This show attracts 40,000 visitors annually from around the globe – you could be one of them! If it is the Canada Day Celebrations on July 1 or another event that brings you here, be sure to visit the heart of our city, Wascana Centre. This incredible park features 2,300 acres of green space centered around the prominent Saskatchewan Legislative Building. From the eight km paved multi-use trail running along Wascana Creek to its nearly 300-acre man-made Wascana Lake, cyclists and joggers are among the many outdoor recreation enthusiasts who take full advantage of Regina’s sunshine and ample open space. The park is also home to the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Saskatchewan Science Centre and Kramer IMAX Theatre. The Saskatchewan Science Centre and Kramer IMAX Theatre feature over 150 permanent exhibits, hands-on activities, live stage shows and one of the tallest indoor climbing walls in the country. It’s a must for kids of all ages! The lovely backdrop and greens of the park make it the ideal location for taking in attractions and events. exhibitions. Bazaart, Saskatchewan’s biggest and best outdoor arts and crafts sale featuring Saskatchewan artisans, takes place at the MacKenzie Art Gallery on June 18. Off Axis presents the SaskTel Summer Invasion in Wascana Park taking place July 8 -10 and features skateboarding, wakeboarding and motor cross competitions, as well as live music. If you are lucky enough to be in the city from September 2 -5 stop by the park and watch the Regina Dragon Boat festival take place on the lake. While touring the park, don’t forget to visit the award winning Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM). Travel through the province and two billion years of Saskatchewan’s geological and early natural history; discover 10,000 years of First Nations history in Saskatchewan and learn about the dynamic balance of nature and how the human “ecological footprint” is affecting this balance. While here, you also have the opportunity to take in one of the top ten events in Canada – the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Sunset Retreat Ceremony, held Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. from July 1 to mid-August, which allows visitors the chance to view Canada’s national icon, the Mountie, wearing the traditional red serge. The well-known and well attended Craven Jamboree will take place from July 14-17 and will play host to some of today’s biggest country stars. “Rascal Flatts is bringing their huge stadium show, which will blow our fans away, but when you add top acts like Sugarland, Darius Rucker, Big and Rich, Johnny Reid and Ronnie Dunn, and the rest of the lineup, we know this is going to be one of the best shows ever!” said Kim Blevins, Director of Marketing for the Craven Country Jamboree. Enjoy a weekend of international talent, art and culture in an intimate setting. The Regina Folk Festival will take place from August 5 to 7 in downtown Regina. Victoria Park will come alive with the sounds of Regina’s best alternative to mainstream music. The 2011 festival lineup features an incredible blend of musical styles, cultural influences and above all, some of the world’s best talent. With free daytime concerts and workshops, a children’s area complete with music and crafts, an artist’s market, outdoor rock garden and soul nourishing edibles, the festival is a full on experience. While downtown, take advantage of the great shopping, numerous restaurants, pubs, daytime spas and more. If gaming is your pleasure, you’ll find plenty of action at Casino Regina located in downtown Regina. Housed in the historic Union Train Station, a National Heritage Site, you’ll find 793 slot machines, 35 table games and even a Vegas-style show lounge. Places to Discover
A well placed beach chair provides an excellent view of a Saskatchewan sunset.
Take a trip in beautiful South East Saskatchewan this spring! As the snow begins to melt away, be inspired to explore new areas and discover some truly remarkable places.
As the temperature begins to rise, people start searching for things to do outside the house… and we have just the thing! Take a trip in beautiful Southeast Saskatchewan. Dust off the golf clubs and practice your game at one of the numerous courses in the Southeast. If you prefer an 18-hole course try Golf Kenosee, White Bear Lake Golf Course, the Scottish links-style course at Mainprize Regional Park near Midale, the Estevan Woodlawn Golf Club, Weyburn Golf Club, Last Oak Golf and Country Club on Cowessess First Nation or Echo Ridge Golf Course just outside Fort Qu’Appelle. If 9-holes is your cup of tea, the Qu’Appelle Valley is also home to the best 9-hole golf course in Saskatchewan, Katepwa Beach Golf Club is located between the village of Katepwa Beach and Lebret. Dig out your camping gear and fishing rods, the provincial parks officially open on Thursday, May 19. There are five provincial parks in the Southeast – Moose Mountain, Crooked Lake, Katepwa Point, Rowan’s Ravine and Echo Valley. Moose Mountain Provincial Park offers a full range of camping facilities, cabins, deluxe
resort hotels and condominiums. Kenosee and White Bear lakes and the nearby Kenosee Superslides offer great family recreational opportunities. Bear Claw Casino & Hotel also offers a variety of year-round entertainment. While you’re in the area make the 15 minute drive to Cannington Manor Provincial Park, which opens Victoria Day weekend between the hours of 10:00am to 5:00pm. This village site introduces the people who came to the prairies in the 1880’s and created a Victorian society in this area. Reconstructed buildings and artifacts allow costumed staff to bring this history to life and an interpretive pathway around the original house tells the story of the past owners. Call 306-577-2600 for more information. There are countless things to do in the Southeast, whether you enjoy camping, shopping, golfing, historic sites, or walking trails… you will find it here!

the Hospitality and Culture
SOUTHWEST: Cypress Hills Inter Provincial Park is located at the border of Saskatchewan.
Experience the hospitality and diversity of Southwest Saskatchewan and its people... dive right in to the history and culture that makes Southwest Saskatchewan so unique... Make some these events part of your vacation itinerary.
The Southwest portion of Saskatchewan is as geographically varied as its people. As a result, the vacation opportunities throughout the south west region encompass a vast cross-section of operators ranging from 5 star resorts to rustic accommodations – from unique urban attractions to natural grasslands. As the Executive Director of Saskatchewan Southwest Tourism Association, a non-profit, membershipbased marketing organization, I’ve been blessed to experience many of these tourism gems across this beautiful part of Saskatchewan. Windscape Kite Festival in Swift Current certainly places its own distinct imprint on the skies south of Swift Current each June! This is one event that you truly have to attend to grasp the grandeur of having the skies filled with gigantic mermaids and squid and, yes, maybe even flying elephants! All kites, of course, but magnificent and breathtaking and stunning and amazing as if they really were real flying mermaids and squids and elephants. This annual event draws guests from all over Canada and parts of the United States. Admission to this uniqueto-Saskatchewan event is free, allowing unlimited access to any who are fortunate enough to take it in. It is totally suited to children of all ages – from 1 to 100. Do take in this event – you won’t regret it! Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia is one of Saskatchewan’s secrets that must be shared. Bill Shurniak amassed a collection of original artwork from around the world and is delighted to present his treasured collection to all who visit his gallery – and with no admission. I am admittedly not a connoisseur
of art – I don’t dislike it, but I’m certainly not cultured in that area. However, each tour through the Shurniak Art Gallery leaves me slightly more of an appreciator of all things artistic. This collection leaves me quietly reflective and pondering the experience I’ve just had each and every time I choose to tour the Gallery. I’ve not yet seen Bill’s entire collection as it is too large to be contained in one showing. Over 500 pieces rotate through this stellar facility, approximately 200 per showing. With pieces from the Group of Seven, as well as pieces from a multitude of many other acclaimed artists worldwide hanging in the Shurniak Art Gallery, you will not regret your experience at this unique and worthy facility in Assiniboia. Grasslands National Park of Canada lies right here in beautiful SW Saskatchewan – and we are so proud to call it our own! Comprised of two main sections – East Block and West Block – this stunningly and vastly different geographical tract of land will leave you a little richer for having visited it. Both blocks offer vistas unparalleled to anything you will expect. From buttes to badlands; from colonies of Prairie Dogs to Plains Bison; from unique flora and fauna to ranchers’ homesteads – there is much to see and learn from park edge to park edge. Take a tour by vehicle following the signs along the Eco-Tour Trail. Or, you can get a closer experience by hiking the many kilometres of trails marked out for visitors. Also possible is to tour the park on horseback – bring your own or tap into one of the available operators in the area who offer these services to the public. Join Continued on page 36

the park staff for their “Cowboy Coffee” tour where you will ride in a mule-drawn wagon and be regaled with stories of the history of the park lands. The status of the re-introduced Black-Footed Ferret in 2009 is being monitored constantly by park experts. Inquire about the status of this adorable little at-risk animal at either of the visitor centre locations. Grasslands National Park of Canada – truly another ‘Don’t Miss’ attraction of the SW Tourism Region! The people of the SW region have always had a natural grit and determination and Ogema is a prime example of this. ‘Coming Soon!” is the slogan that is ‘sticky-noted’ across ads associated with the planned 2012 launch of Southern Prairie Railway Tourist Train. The locomotive and a passenger car have been secured and the logistics of shipping them to Ogema is now being worked through. Once they arrive, work will commence immediately on readying them for opening in early spring of 2012 as a Tourist Train. Offered will be themed and guided train tours via a section of track running west out of Ogema. Travelling over approximately 20 miles of breathtaking scenery, guests will be waiting with bated breath to see what vista awaits them ‘round the next corner of the track. Samples of planned themes include Star-Gazing tours after sunset; Wine & Cheese Tours for those seeking a more refined experience; and yes, there is maybe even the possibility of being robbed by masked bandits on horseback whilst enjoying your train ride, as another themed tour. Be sure to keep your ‘ear to the track’ and listen for the arrival of what will be Saskatchewan’s first and only Tourist Train! These are just a few examples of the types of unique and exciting vacation opportunities that SW Saskatchewan’s tourism operators work hard to provide you with. For more suggestions, or for further information on vacationing in SW Saskatchewan, call 1-800-670-1093 and start planning today!

In the 20s Moose Jaw’s (AKA ‘Little Chicago’) River Street was the home of gambling, prostitutes and the bootleg centre of booze running Into the States. The tunnels under the streets there connect the various businesses and were used by various gangsters, including Al Capone. The tunnels were believed to have been dug years earlier by Chinese immigrants as a way to escape. (Canada had Chinese concentration camps although no one ever brags about that!)

Many golfers are unaware, the public can play the Royal Regina Golf Club, the birthplace of golf in Saskatchewan. For $75 a round, golfers can wile away an afternoon in the heart of the city and practise their water shots crisscrossing Wascana Creek. If you’re short on time and want to get in a quick game in, there’s the city-owned Joanne Goulet Golf Course in northwest Regina. hole track for novices and seniors that sports a great clubhouse, RV facilities,a night-time practice facility, and good dining. Twenty minutes from Regina in the scenic Qu’Appelle Valley, the challenging Deer Valley Golf & Estates has established itself in just a few years as one of the most beautiful and challenging natural prairie tracks anywhere. Deer Valley’s reputation was set a few years ago when The Globe and Mail newspaper rated the par-3 second hole as the fifth best in all of Canada. A new clubhouse overlooking the course opened a few years ago where you can sit on the deck and nurse a beer or coffee. And there’s no better place to spend a day than chasing the ball around a pretty prairie river valley at the devilish Long Creek Golf & Country Club south of Regina near Avonlea. The nervewracking par-5 signature hole is renowned among golfers around the province. Another good bet in the region is Katepwa Golf Course, about 40 minutes away, a wonderfully groomed nine-hole course that winds its way along the hills of the famous Qu’Appelle Valley. This course offers scenic views of the valley lakes and a good cardio workout if you walk. From the expansive views of the Qu’Appelle Valley at Katepwa or priairie valleys of Long Creek

and Deer Valley, to the urban charm of Saskatchewan’s capital, the Regina district is a must-stop destination. Off-course highlights in Regina are endless and include the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Kramer IMAX Theatre, the Norman MacKenzie Art Gallery and the new RCMP Heritage Centre, Casino Regina, and everyone’s favorite football team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
SASKATOON & REGION
Next stop is down the road in Saskatoon where you can tee off at one of the district’s 18, 27 or 36-hole target, links or rolling linksstyle golf courses. You’ll discover one of the top Saskatchewan public courses at the Willows Golf & Country Club which offers a championship 36-hole dunes-style track complete with an island green. Both facilities and dining are upscale, and the course geared to everyone from the novice to the accomplished golfer. Moonlake Golf and Country Club, 15 minutes southwest of the city, also follows the links-style tradition with water hazards, heavily mounded fairways and long native grass roughs. This 27hole links-style championship course offers a wee bit of Scotland and a clubhouse in a cosy, restored turn-of-the-century railway station. Opened for play in 1979, the scenic 18-hole Greenbryre Golf and Country Club offers rolling fairways bordered by many beautiful birch, maple and ash trees. This course gets top marks for offering a friendly and casual round of golf. The marquee city-owned track can be found at the Holiday Park Golf Course, comprising a full-length 18-hole plus a ninehole executive course. While conditions may vary, there are some beautiful tree-lined fairways. Continued on page 40

TOR HILL GOLF COURSE: A perennial favourite in Regina.
Saskatoon’s newest, high-end golf course is Perdue Oasis Golf and RV Resort located 33--minutes west of the city on Highway 14. The track is located between the eastern flank of the Bear Hills and Lake Vanscoy, just west of Perdue. The clubhouse and facilities are among the best in the province, and while the trees are still growing, the golf conditions are memorable. There’s no better place to spend a day with your family than at the regional park and its newly expanded 18-hole Valley Golf and Country Club at nearby Rosthern. You may need to book early if you want to tackle The Legends at Warman, a few minutes north of the city off Highway #11. Even though it opens for the first time in May, it’s already made a very positive impression by attracting the best amateur golfers in the province at the 100th Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur in July. And just south of Saskatoon, several First Nations teed up to build the heralded Dakota Dunes Golf Links, a links-style
championship facility with imposing sand dunes. Since opening in 2004, the Dunes has piled up the honours - including the coveted Best New Course in Canada (2005) by Golf Digest Magazine and established itself as one of the best courses in the province. If it’s windy take along a few extra balls and dollars for the new casino. While in Saskatoon visit the 400 acres of riverbank trails and parks along the Saskatchewan River Valley, the Western Museum, the 6,000-year-old sacred ground at the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, or take in a summer jazz festival or theatre extravaganza. If you want to save a few dollars, check out Tourism Saskatchewan, Tourism Regina and Saskatoon, along with SaskGolfer.com for the latest in stay and play golf vacations.
