FINANCIAL AID MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS western.edu/cost
Immediately upon acceptance at Western, every student is considered for a Merit Scholarship worth between $2,000-$4,000 per year for in-state students and $4,500-$7,000 for out-of-state students. The amount is based on college GPA - see chart below. Merit scholarships for transfer students are renewable for up to three years.

RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS western.edu/aid
A maximum of six semesters of eligibility will be awarded to transfer students. To continue receiving a Merit Scholarship, students must: • Enroll and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours each year. • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 for the Advantage awards and a 3.0 for the Scholars and Phi Theta Kappa awards. • Meet satisfactory academic requirements.

Under the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) and Central Plains (CP) programs, students from certain states pay just 150% of Western’s total in-state tuition. For 2021-22, the discount is valued at $4,146. Students from neighboring states who demonstrate financial need are considered for an extra $1,000-per-year grant, assessed annually.

(Fee waivers from the ACT, SAT or counselor statements are acceptable.)
Steve Otero As an Air Force veteran looking to further his education after serving 12 years, including combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Steve Otero wasn’t sure a traditional university was right for him. “I was admittedly afraid of going to a [campus-based] university. However, after speaking with a number of professors on campus, I decided to take the leap and go to school in person rather than online,” Steve said. “The professors are truly investing in me and my future success.”

After entering Western with a number of transfer credits from his time in the Air Force, Steve decided to double major in Psychology and Recreation & Outdoor Education paired with a minor in Exercise & Sport Science. Combining these interests, Steve teamed up with a professor to research hormone changes in wounded military veterans exposed to nature-based activities.
