OUR MISSION: To provide financial leadership and support of the Western State Colorado University vision while offering an ever-improving and remarkable learning environment.
Sandra Lee Mark was born Nov. 28, 1931 in Ashland, Kan. and died Feb. 13, 2016. She was the only child of James Joseph and Fred Mae Smidl, both prior residents of Gunnison. James served in both WWII and the Korean War which caused the family to move in and out of Gunnison. The family returned to Gunnison after his service and James took over the newspaper. She graduated from Gunnison High School in 1949 and started at Western State College. She met Leon Gilbert (Okie) Mark, a fellow student, at a dance in Almont in 1949. Okie proposed on their first date and they married on Aug. 6, 1950. Okie and Sandy left Gunnison when he began what turned into a 31-year career in the United States Air Force. This was the beginning of an odyssey that caused them to move 29 times in support of his career as an USAF officer. During those years she lived in nine different states and three foreign countries; England, Russia (formerly USSR) and Germany. She was a dedicated wife and devoted mother to Mike and Stacey with a special way of creating a home no matter where the family lived. Tragically, Mike was killed in 1978 in an F-15 accident. Sandy and Okie moved back to Gunnison after they retired from the USAF. At that time she enrolled in Western and graduated in 1987 at the age of 56. She lost her beloved Okie in 1996. Mark was a tireless worker in her community. Some of her past affiliations include the Gunnison Council for the Arts, the Gunnison Home Association, and the Gunnison Valley Hospital Board of Trustees. She is also a past president of the Western State College Foundation Board of Directors, and a former member of the Western Board of Trustees. She is survived by her loving daughter, Stacey, who currently lives in North Carolina with a house full of fur children and was by her side when she died. Sandy was one of the best friends a person could have. She is remembered for her sense of style (never being seen without her lipstick), her way with words, her quick wit and turn of phrase, her love of animals and as an encourager to all. We mourn. MARK
SVEN
Western State Colorado University and the rest of the skiing world lost a legend on July 5, 2016. Legendary ski coach and Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame inductee Sven Wiik passed away at the age of 95 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado of natural causes. Sven was a member of Western State Foundation’s Board of Directors in the Foundation’s early years. “Sven Wiik’s contributions to Western and the international skiing community are beyond measure,” Western’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Brad Baca said. “Western and the Gunnison Valley were fortunate to have him as a coach to our students, a mentor to our faculty and staff as well as an engaged community member.” Wiik was a member of the inaugural class for the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in 1995, and has been inducted into the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame (1979) and the National Ski Hall of Fame (1981). He received the Halsted Memorial Trophy (the highest award given by the Rocky Mountain Division of the United States Ski Association) in 1970, the Blegan Award from the United States Ski Association in 1974 for outstanding service to the sport of skiing, and the Tony Wise Award American Birkebeiner in 2010. Over his 19 years at Western, Wiik coached 12 Mountaineers who went on to Olympic and FIS competition, and coached U.S. teams at the World Championships in Finland (1958), the Squaw Valley Olympic Games (1960) and the International-University Competition in Italy (1996). He also served on the NCAA Ski Rules Committee, the USSA Nordic Competition Committee, the USSA Olympic Ski Games committee, the US Ski Education Foundation Board of Trustees, and was part of the organizing committee for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Games. Along with coach Marty Hall, they designed the course of the Birkebeiner — North America’s premier ski marathon from Cable to Hayward, Wisconsin. “I always wanted to be like (Wiik) as a coach, teacher and person,” Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame inductee and Western professor Dr. Duane Vandenbusche said. “Sven was the father of nordic skiing in the U.S. and really put Western on the map.” Wiik was also a professor of health and physical education at Western, earning Emeritus Professor honors in 1984. Along with introducing the Gunnison community to gymnastics and crosscountry skiing, Wiik was at the forefront of teaching swimming lessons when the Paul Wright Gym Natatorium opened. Wiik helped teach the Gunnison youth, as well as certifying lifeguards. Wiik was born in Solleftea, Sweden, on Feb. 27, 1921, and competed in the demonstration sport of gymnastics in the 1948 Olympics in London. He came to America the next year, landing briefly in Chicago. Wiik had an offer to coach at Lake Placid, New York, but Gerry Groswold, who would later become the president of Winter Park Ski Area, urged the young man to contact Western. After leaving Western, Sven and his wife, Birthe (Bitte), moved to Steamboat from Gunnison where they built the Scandinavian Lodge. Later, they established the Steamboat Ski Touring Center on a golf course not far removed from Steamboat Ski Area. Their daughter Birgitta Lindgren and granddaughter Kajsa Lindgren are continuing the family tradition at the touring center. Wiik remained active in skiing competition throughout the National Masters Ski Program and was a 1987 and 1992 member of the National Masters Ski Team. He competed in 15 World Masters Championships from 1992-to-2011. Gunnison Country Times
WIIK
Prior to going to press, we learned of the passing of Mabel Musgrave, a friend of Western and the mother of alumnus and former Foundation Board member, Jim Musgrave ’64 and the late Frank Musgrave ‘68. Mabel supported the Foundation with generous scholarship gifts in Frank’s memory, which touched the lives of many students. We will miss Mable dearly. She was 101.

FOUNDATION PRESIDENT
GERRY SHEAR Dear Western Alumni and Friends, “Because of you” is the grateful theme of this year’s Annual Report of Appreciation. In my final year as President of Western State Foundation, I want to make sure you know that because of you, the world is a better place. That may sound like a lofty statement, but I know it is true. We all want to make a difference in the lives of others, and to be a force for good for our families, friends, communities, and the causes we care about most deeply. I assure you that because you give to Western’s mission, that you are doing exactly that. Because of you and your generosity, the Foundation was able to invest more than $6 million in the students and programs of Western last fiscal year alone! One of the things that trills me most is that, unlike at other large and impersonal institutions, life at Western is different the day after you make your gift than it was the day before. Careful stewardship, great appreciation and commitment to continuous improvement at Western ensure that. And that’s all made possible because of you. Because of you, $845,000 in privately-funded scholarships were awarded to Western students, many of whom would otherwise not have been able to pursue a university education. Others are top scholars or athletes who are at Western because of a scholarship, enhancing our community and inspiring others to reach higher than they ever before aspired. Behind every scholarship is the life of a precious and promising student, whose life and future impact on the world is elevated…because of you. Western is not done yet. After 115 years, Western is still becoming, advancing, growing into an ever greater force for good. And it’s because of you. You and I do many things that leave us wondering, “Did I really made a difference?” Rest assured that in regard to your selfless investment in the lives of our students through the unique University we love, you have indeed made a difference, touched lives, brought hope, inspired service, and changed the world. And I’m grateful to be able to say that it’s “because of you.” Thank you.

MONICA NEWMAN. PRESIDENT 1953-2015. WESTERN
GREG SALSBURY Fiscal year 2015-16 was another challenging but overall positive year of change for Western. I am pleased to report that Western’s overall health has improved yet again. Our marketing efforts were magnified significantly; our selectivity as an institution was enhanced; new academic programs were launched; we launched a number of new student engagement programs; and our fiscal condition improved. Driven largely by more recruiting presence and activity on the Front Range, targeted advertising, and digital media campaigns we saw sharp increases in our number of applications, admissions, preview day visits, and campus visits. Correspondingly, we saw another boost in headcount and FTES, 5.5% and 6.5%, respectively. Perhaps due in part to this improved profile we were named for the third year in a row to Forbes Top 100 Colleges of the West – and moved up a few notches. We ranked number five for schools advocating Environmental Science; and we were named a “Top Adventure School.” We also saw significant improvements and/or additions to our academic programs. We approved new programs in Wildlife Biology and Finance, while significantly updating the Energy Management program [formerly PLRM] as well as the Educational Administration emphasis. We also finalized plans for our ICEHouse project and building pending subsequent funding. The inaugural class of our Masters in High Altitude Performance Physiology matriculated and we added a new graduate program in Master in Gallery Management and Exhibit Specialization which welcomed its first class this fall. Our athletic teams saw another year of impressive performances. We improved our rank in the national Learfield Directors Cup, moving from 48th to 39th out of over 250 Division II institutions and had the third highest finish among 14 RMAC institutions. The women’s cross-country team had another top ten finish in the national finals and our wrestling team finished with the academic national championship.
Best regards,
We continue to invest in one of our most important assets – our beautiful campus facilities. The $26 million Quigley Hall renovation was completed. Western’s composite financial index landed in the “strong” range for the first time in several years.
Gerry A. Shear (’92) President, Western State Foundation
When I first arrived, I analogized our challenge at Western to a car being stuck in a ditch – with the first priority being to get the car out of the ditch. As we begin my third year I feel confident that the car is nearly out, and that our new strategic plan can begin to focus more on where we might want to drive it.
We would not have been able to make this progress without the generosity of key Western alumni and friends who contributed not only to traditional university pursuits but to more abstract concepts such as advertising, marketing, and recruiting. These investments have turned out to be critical for Western’s survival and success. Sincerely,
Greg Salsbury President

PIERCE ESTATE GIFT INVITES YOU TO NAME
AN ENDOWMENT Maxine M. (Schindler) Pierce (’74) and David Pierce have been relentlessly generous in supporting Western and its students through the Foundation, and they want to make sure that their support continues long after they are no longer here to provide it directly. So, they have made designations in their estates to give more than $1.5 million to the Foundation for unrestricted use. “Maxine and David are consummate philanthropists and very dear friends. Their legacy of blessing will continue at Western in beautiful ways. I appreciate them more than I can express,” said Tom Burggraf, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Their desire to make their gift unrestricted is powerful and will enable the greatest needs and highest opportunities to be met and seized in perpetuity.” “We have enjoyed supporting the School of Business, the Mountain Sports Team, the Athletic Bus and the University Advancement Campaigns, among others. But we cannot anticipate the needs of Western generations in the future, and keeping our gift unrestricted will allow the Foundation’s leadership to respond to them as they become apparent.” Maxine knows how to respond to needs and opportunities, having served on the Foundation Board of Directors for six years, most recently as Secretary.
Your photo could be here!
Their gift will establish the most exceptional and selfless name of an endowed fund at the Foundation: “The Your Name Here if you give A LOT of money to this Unrestricted Endowment Fund.” This is intended to inspire a significant gift from a donor who wants the naming opportunity by making a gift of at least $1 million to add to Maxine and David’s gift for unrestricted endowment. “We have a greater desire to be memorialized by the good we can do for Western and its students than we do for our names. So, we will allow someone who has the same desire and ability to title the fund with their name when they follow our example.” In addition, through the Topper Foundation, Maxine and David will provide perpetual variable annual grant revenue to fund the Western School of Business. Each annual grant to Western State Foundation from the Topper Foundation shall be directed 35% to a scholarship to be named in memory of Maxine’s parents 35% to the existing Business Dean’s Discretionary Fund 30% Maxine and David Pierce Faculty Support Fund “The number of Western students and programs that will be strengthened and elevated because of Maxine and David’s generosity is beyond description. As is our gratitude for their selfless giving,” Burggraf said. Someone reading this may be in a position to name this powerful endowment. If you’d like to explore the possibility, contact Tom Burggraf at tburggraf@western.edu or 970-641-2237.

MAKING A CHARITABLE BEQUEST
CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENT AND
TO WESTERN
SUSTAINABILITY
Including Western State Foundation in your Will or Estate Plans Your will is a written testimonial of your concern for your family, loved ones, and the causes most dear to you. It is a way to show others what you value most in life, being especially generous with the people and organizations that matter the most to you. There are many ways to include a charitable bequest to Western in your will.
The Simplest Form:
The Center for Environment & Sustainability at Western State Colorado University asks a basic question: How can academic understanding serve community sustainability efforts and how can those community efforts expand the classrooms of academic learning? Our Center explores this question in three ways:
1 Academic Programs.
We offer a B.A. in Environment & Sustainability (ENVS) and a Master in Environmental Management (MEM).
You could simply state:
• B.A. in ENVS: this program is an interdisciplinary program that blends environmental biology, environmental physics, environmental policy, environmental economics, and environmental ethics to understand the complexity of natural systems, the human impacts on those systems, and sustainable solutions for those impacts.
“I give to Western State Colorado University Foundation Inc., 909 E. Escalante Drive, Gunnison CO 81230 (Tax ID: 84-0709935) the sum of [_____%] residue, or [$_____ (fixed dollar amount)] of my estate to be used for ________________ (either a specific purpose; or Unrestricted, at the discretion of its governing board).”
• MEM: this program is a professional program dedicated to preparing students for environmental careers. There are two MEM tracks. One track in Integrative and Public Land Management prepares students for careers with public land agencies like the US Forest Service, the National Parks Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, as well as careers with land trusts. The other track in Sustainable and Resilient Communities prepares students for careers in sustainable community development, focusing on sustainable food, energy, waste, and water systems and climate action planning. As a management program, the MEM focuses on entrepreneurial skills, unlikely partnership building, and environmental organizational development. Our first group of MEM graduates in 2016 enjoyed a 90% placement rate with environmental jobs.
It really is that simple. If you are including Western in your estate please, please let us know about your decision, so we can plan on and celebrate your gift, and provide helpful resources. For additional ways to include Western State Foundation in your charitable plans, please contact Tom Burggraf, Executive Director, 970-641-2237, tburggraf@western.edu
Free Resources for you:
2 Community Events.
Our Center provides three major community events per year, allowing community members to benefit from our expertise and exposing students to the wisdom of national and global experts.
• Headwaters Conference: now in its 27th year, this event is free to the public. In 2016 we dedicated the event to celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service.
Our website contains a wealth of updated financial information for gift planning, with many free e-brochures and even a free estate planning kit available. Visit us at www.WesternFoundation.MyLegacyGift.Org
• Spring Environmental Symposium: now in its 22nd year, this event is free to the public. In 2016, we held a major Sage Grouse Summit with experts from across the US addressing challenges facing the threatened species.
We even have free resources for your professional advisor to help you see how each option will benefit you and Western.
• Colorado Water Workshop: now in its 42nd year, this event convenes water professionals from across Colorado to discuss major water plans for the State and across the West.
“It takes a noble person to plant a seed for a tree that will someday give shade to people he/she may never meet.”
Our students and faculty provide a wide array of research and service projects for community environmental organizations. Undergraduate students begin their service projects from the first day, when ENVS 100 students participate in projects led by Juniors partnering with local organizations. Seniors must complete a major project, which through the years has led to solar energy and an organic farm for campus, a free ski bus for students, and a backcountry management plan for Black Canyon National Park. On the graduate level, MEM students must each complete a 600-hour project for an environmental organization. Recent projects have included efficient stove production in Kenya, a sister parks program for Costa Rica, and energy efficiency planning for the cities of Aspen, Montrose, and Mount Crested Butte.
- D. Elton Trueblood
BECAUSE OF YOU... ...I will be the first in my family to obtain a degree 12
3 Service and Research.
...I will go on to serve others
Generous donors have supported all aspects of the Center, from scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, to funding for our community events, to backing for student projects. More recently, as the MEM program tripled our faculty, the Center has raised $650,000 for an expanded physical space in Kelley Hall. Construction is to begin in May 2017. None of the above programs would have been possible without the 2016 gifts of Butch Clark, Margie and John Haley, Ken and Jeanne Levy-Church, Michael and Kathleen Aune, the Boettcher Foundation, and the El Pomar Foundation.

CELEBRATION OF GIVING
BANQUET This evening I want to talk with you briefly about Gifts and Treasures.
cannot begin to cover in this talk but I will try to give you a flavor of what is so special to me.
GIFTS: Things we share or give to one another to show our appreciation or to celebrate an event…like a birthday, anniversary, other special occasions.
It obviously begins with my Dad (Dr. Hugo Ferchau). Duke University…..Wofford College (born in Spartanburg, SC, lived there three years moved to Gunnison in 1962)….teaching at Western State. After 30 Years of teaching, research and mentoring his students, Dad died of cancer in 1993. We shared a lot throughout the years and it was generally on campus if we were going to get some of Dad’s time…plant trees on campus with him, washing his test tubes, grading papers, in the classroom, the list goes on.
TREASURES: Things that find their way deep in our heart and soul that we cherish for a lifetime…like our family, special friends or a unique experience. Please take the hand of the people you are sitting next to at your table: Tonight we are celebrating the exchange of gifts. Many of you are receiving the gift of a scholarship and you should feel honored. What I want you to realize is that you are holding the hand of someone who tonight is celebrating a treasure. That donor, right now, deep in their heart and soul is remembering a very special person or a very special event in their life. They are celebrating their treasure by giving you a gift. To all you donors, thank you very much. I know what an honor it is to be able to recognize your treasure. I would like to recognize a few of my treasures here tonight…my wife of 35 years, Beth. My sister Angie Hart and my mom, Mary Ellen Ferchau. Tom Burggraf, this is a great event and tradition! We look forward to attending ever year, listening to your prayer and heartfelt messages, and I would like to thank you and all your people. President Greg Salsbury and the Cabinet... Thank you for your leadership and commitment to advance Western, despite the challenges that face higher education. The challenges of higher education are great and we cannot take for granted the existence of Western in Gunnison: Higher Costs, Limited State Funding, Advancement of Technology, Changes in Value Proposition…all of these as well as the competition among Universities represent the challenges we face. We all know it takes a great team of faculty and administration to make this all happen and I want to thank them for their time, their passion for their subject matter and their dedication to the students. Thank you all very much. Let’s talk about our treasures…Western State Colorado University and Gunnison Colorado. My treasure is a bundle of people and experiences that I

Erich Ferchau Western Trustee Celebration of Giving Banquet Speaker October 25, 2016
First stop was Beckwith Hall (faculty housing)…now gone but offered the gift of new friendships…Violett, Tredway, Dorzweiler, Bouchard, Starkebaum, Hatcher, etc. Hurst Hall…of course, that was Dad’s office location. We horsed around the hallways while he worked in his office. We would take the toilet paper and run it down the hall with the tip in the toilet then flush and watch the paper get sucked down the toilet. What we do for fun as kids! Kelly Hall…observation class room for WSC students… teaching methods, student behavior…classic obnoxious kid… we spent 3rd and 6th Grades on campus. Student Union…a popular hangout for Dad, a smoke and coffee with students, 5 cent Cokes…Dormitories, Taylor Hall, the Library…there are stories to tell about all of them. Even the dumpsters on campus have a special place in my life. When we were kids we would go “dumpster diving” to find all the hidden treasures that were being left behind by the college students. My brother attended Western in 1970 and then joined the Air Force. My sister Angie started Western in 1976 and I followed the next year. So, once our brother returned from Vietnam we were able to all share the college experience together. Vandenbusche had me tutoring athletes, I ran the math lab on campus and participated in intramural sports with the VETs club. For over 15 years, Western State was a big part of my life and a treasure to cherish. The Gunnison Community was no different to me. When I was 6 years old my brother, then 12 years old, went to Germany with my Grandparents to learn about the “old country”. I inherited my brother’s paper route which started
my first job. For the next 6 years I delivered the Denver Post every day on my bicycle to my customers. I would take my $20/month profits downtown to the Savings and Loan bank and make my deposit…visiting the bankers and shop owners along the way. That was back in the day when you could still ride your bicycle on the sidewalks! I treasured this town. Fast forward to 2000: I had transferred to UGA as a “premed” student. Reflecting on that, I would have been better prepared for Medical School had I stayed at Western. Small classrooms, excellent professors…but, as fate would have it, I moved, fell in love, married, finished a graduate degree in Business and lived happily in Georgia. Beth and I were in Atlanta, Georgia and had talked about moving home for 20 years. I was getting tired of the corporate job at The Coca-Cola Company and we decided to move back to Gunnison and open a Real Estate office. We now own RE/MAX Community Brokers in Gunnison and Crested Butte. Naming our business “Community” Brokers was a very deliberate word choice. We realized in Gunnison you don’t just represent real estate…you represent the community. From the beginning, we wanted to give back to the Community. We had already established a scholarship to honor Dad. Beth and I wanted to create a Re/Max scholarship and help encourage the local high school graduates to attend Western. And tonight, we celebrate that gift with our recipients. Moving forward…Gunnison in one hand and Western in the other…the university and community need each other. I am not sure who coined the phrase, but I like it, “Gunnison without Western State is like Olathe without Sweet Corn.” Western, in my opinion, is the cornerstone of our economy and our community. The character of our town and the foundation or our economy rests right here with Western State. As for Western Students, they come here for an education. They leave here with an education, a broader experience and an emotional response to the Community of Gunnison and Western State.
Growing enrollment! We are growing our enrollment. We need to grow our enrollment. At the same time, our community will grow and find ways to better accommodate the University. Are we making progress? I think so. Western has taken the initiative with the State to secure much needed internet reliability for the community. The community is exploring creative ideas to facilitate the change of our downtown from just a shopping center to a shopping and social center. I know that President Salsbury and others at Western are having regular discussions with community leaders about opportunities to work together. Can we improve? Of course we can. Sustained growth will depend on expanded airport service, health services, a more stable economy and industry diversification. We at Western need to make sure the community understands what we need to succeed. How is the student experience? I think it is good. Perhaps we the community need to ask that question more often. Our student affairs people do an excellent job with campus community, not just providing a service, but building relationships. We have a beautiful campus and state of the art buildings. The incredible natural surroundings are a God-given resource to all of us. If these students are not accustomed to outdoor adventure, they will be before they leave. Can we improve? Of course we can. As we grow, there will be opportunities to expand social and recreational offerings in town. Thriving businesses can employ more students. We will continue to raise student awareness about our community and surroundings. What is the end goal? When we are successful in providing the quality education and rewarding experience, we will succeed in making the emotional connection. Our students, our university and our community will have something to treasure! Nights like this are a really good beginning for all of us. We give gifts in hopes of creating treasures. Thank you.
We must anticipate and plan together, as a University and a Community, to make the student experience as rewarding as possible. The education part is what happens up here on the hill, and I think we do a great job with that. I mentioned before the outstanding faculty who teach with great passion and love for the students. Our classroom size is small and students are connected. We are a small institution and students can be involved at many different levels. Can we improve? Of course we can. Education is an ever-changing business and we will continue to evolve. Ferchau family and recipient, Camilla Alarcon.

Energy Management Installs Solar Panels in Peru
Dr. Jessica Richards, Energy Management faculty, and senior Energy Management student, Allie Huizenga, partnered with Texas Tech and the World Energy Project and traveled to Peru this summer where they installed basic solar power systems to homes in developing villages where electricity is not available. The World Energy Project trains in system design, micro-finance, and solar powered system installation. Richards and Huizenga arrived in Lima, Peru for their training, then traveled throughout the high country of the Andes Mountains to rural communities. They spent the majority of their time in the Province of Huancasancos in Ayacucho, Peru, setting up solar panel light systems and battery packs to bring basic electricity to those previously off the grid. The World Energy Project installed a total of 25 power systems on this trip. “The families themselves pay for the system,” Richards explains. “It comes with lights and a charging station intended for small electronics. It was amazing. A lot of them had cell phones without electricity. They would walk down to the villages to borrow someone else’s electricity to charge their phones and walk all the way back home. Now they can actually do work at home and have the ability to communicate and be more connected with their new electricity.” Huizenga says, “The biggest takeaway for me is the impact that the electricity has on quality of life. As we drove away, it was amazing to look back and see the homes lit and the happiness on their faces. Electricity in the United States is something we take for granted.”

DO YOU LOVE YOUR FAMILY AND WESTERN MORE THAN THE GOVERNMENT? Here’s a way to redirect your taxes to benefit your family and Western State’s mission… Do you want to benefit from the tax savings that result from supporting Western State Foundation, yet you don’t want to give up any assets that you’d like your family to receive someday? You can have it both ways with a charitable lead trust! How? You give assets to a trust that pays Western State Foundation set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the gift tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer assets to family members at a minimal cost. There are two ways charitable lead trusts make payments: A charitable lead annuity trust pays a fixed amount each year to Western State Foundation and is more attractive when interest rates are low. A charitable lead unitrust pays a variable amount each year based on the value of the assets in the trust. With a unitrust, if the trust’s assets go up in value, for example, the payments to Western State Foundation go up as well. Potential Scenario: George would like to support Western State Foundation and provide for his children. Following his advisor’s recommendation, George funds a charitable lead annuity trust with assets valued at $800,000. George’s trust pays $56,000 (7 percent of the initial fair market value) to Western State Foundation to fund Business scholarships, each year for 15 years, which will total $840,000. After that, the balance in the trust goes to his children. His gift tax deduction is $698,488* against the $800,000 of assets. Therefore only the difference ($101,512) is subject to gift tax, which is offset against his lifetime gift tax exclusion. After that, the remaining trust assets and all of their growth will pass to his family at zero additional cost in gift and estate taxes. Had George given the $800,000 outright to his children, it would have been a taxable gift. George benefits Western and its students, his children, while substantially reducing taxes.
YOUR IRA: A POWERFUL, TAX-SAVING WAY TO HELP WESTERN STATE FOUNDATION See Your Generosity in Action
If you are 70½ years old or older, whether you need the income or not, you are required to take a distribution from your IRA causing a taxable event that you may wish to avoid. You can take advantage of a simple way to benefit Western State Foundation and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money. This law no longer has an expiration date so you are free to make annual gifts to our organization this year and well into the future.
WHY CONSIDER THIS GIFT? • Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making. • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. • If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. I’ve already named Western State Foundation as the beneficiary of my IRA. What are the benefits if I make a gift now instead of after my lifetime? A. By making a gift this year of up to $100,000 from your IRA, you can see your philanthropic dollars at work. You are jump-starting the legacy you would like to leave and giving yourself the joy of watching your philanthropy take shape.
Q. I’m turning age 70½ in a few months. Can I make this gift now? A. No. The legislation requires you to reach age 70½ by the date you make the gift. Q. I have several retirement accounts—some are pensions and some are IRAs. Does it matter which retirement account I use? A. Yes. Direct rollovers to a qualified charity can be made only from an IRA. Under certain circumstances, however, you may be able to roll assets from a pension, profit sharing, 401(k) or 403(b) plan into an IRA and then make the transfer from the IRA directly to Western State Foundation. To determine if a rollover to an IRA is available for your plan, speak with your plan administrator. Q. Can my gift be used as my required minimum distribution under the law? A. Yes, absolutely. If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution, the IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. Contact your IRA custodian to complete the gift. Q. Do I need to give my entire IRA to be eligible for the tax benefits? A. No. You can give any amount under this provision, as long as it is $100,000 or less this year. If your IRA is valued at more than $100,000, you can transfer a portion of it to fund a charitable gift. Q. My spouse and I would like to give more than $100,000. How can we do that? A. If you have a spouse (as defined by the IRS) who is 70½ or older and has an IRA, he or she can also give up to $100,000 from his or her IRA. It is wise to consult with your tax professionals if you are contemplating a charitable gift under the extended law. ARTHUR JOSEPH NORRIS
Arthur Joseph Norris was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Nov. 12, 1917, and passed away in the early hours of April 7, 2015 at his home in Gunnison. He was preceded in death by Beatrice, his beloved wife of 62 years. Art and Bea were lebenkunstlers — artists of life. Together, they created a life filled with great food, music, wine, skiing, hiking, travel, books and friendships. They will be long remembered for the many gatherings they hosted, which invariably ended on a high note, with everyone singing the old standards accompanied by Cal Queal at the piano. Among Art’s favorites were “Back to Sorrento” and “Oh Sole Mio,” but he wasn’t above singing old Polish ditties from his childhood, and even after 90 years, never forgot the words. Art retired from 20 years of teaching in the Division of Business at Western State College in 1986. His students benefited from his first career as a representative for McGraw Hill in Europe as well as his stint as the owner of a small ad agency in Switzerland. Once Art and Bea moved down valley to Gunnison, he became involved in efforts to create a lively, vibrant downtown and worked with individual businesses to help them survive in a difficult economic environment. In retirement, Art continued to stay active, skiing into his 80s, hiking and golfing. Crippled by rheumatoid arthritis upon his return from WWII’s European theater, he spent a year recovering, learning how to walk again. After his release from the military hospital in Hot Springs, Ark., he never let a day go by
without some kind of physical activity. In his last years, when he could no longer walk on his own, he trekked the one-eighth mile to the mailbox and back, supported by a walker and spotted by a caregiver, with his devoted dog, Mizzou, at his side. Art is survived by his daughter, Barbara Norris (Mark Mundy) of Dallas, Texas; his son, Ronald (Bré) Norris, who works in various locations overseas, and his grandchildren — Joseph and Sarah Jacobs, Justine Norris, and Tariq.

REXFORD PETERSON, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Rex was gifted with intelligence, integrity, curiosity, creativity, generosity and compassion. In 1942, Rex was student body President at Western State College in Gunnison, CO. At a dance, he met Dorothea Dell McCrory, during her “Senior Sneak Day” visit, and immediately said, “I’m going to marry that girl.” They were wed in 1945. During WWII, Rex served as a flight instructor in the Army Air Corps, and after the war, he and Dell returned to Western State College where Rex received the education that set him on a path of achievement as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Phoenix, AZ. He gained an international reputation as an innovative surgeon whose scientific presentations to his peers told the truth about the benefits of new procedures, as well as, possible complications. He reached the pinnacle of his field when he was elected President of The American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. An exceptional teacher, he founded and directed an accredited residency program that gave significantly more direct surgical involvement than programs offered by many very prestigious universities and clinics. Fifty-six plastic surgeons were graduated from Rex’s program and they went on to practice in13 states and 3 foreign countries. The Arts were Rex’s passion. While serving on the board of the Heard Museum, he was an early champion of artists Charles Loloma, Fritz Scholder, and Allan Houser before they became famous. He also admired and supported the works of artists Paul Dyck and James Turrell. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, his three daughters, Tia Peterson, Marta Peterson, Lisa FitzGerald, and his son-in-law, Dan FitzGerald, who loved him and will miss him forever.

THE BENEFACTOR’S CLUB ($100,000 to $999,999)
A retained life estate. Perhaps you like the tax advantages a gift of real estate to Western would offer, but you want to continue living in your personal residence for your lifetime. You can transfer your personal residence, farm or ranch to Western State Foundation but keep the right to occupy (or rent out) the home or property for the rest of your life. You continue to pay real estate taxes, maintenance fees and insurance on the property. Even though we would not actually take possession of the residence until after your lifetime, since your gift cannot be revoked, you receive an immediate federal income tax charitable deduction for a significant portion of your home's value. This is a powerful way for you to make a transforming gift with great tax benefits, with no change in your current lifestyle, which will help Western in ways you may have never dreamed possible! The tool pictured to the left is just one of many free resources provided on our website for you to explore the possibilities of making a tax-wise gift to Western State Foundation. WESTERN STATE
RESURGENCE!
FOUNDATION
(L to R) Pam Johnston (Financial Manager and Annual Fund Officer), Debbie Johnson (Staff Assistant), Kenzie Conradson (Foundation Intern), Catherine Lopez (Major Gift Officer, Denver), Tom Burggraf (Executive Director).
IMAGINE, 3,000 STUDENTS AT WESTERN! W3000 is an effort to elevate Western’s enrollment to 3,000+ students. The thrilling news is today, Western has 2,908 students! Western had the highest percentage growth—6.8%— of all four-year Colorado public institutions between fall 2015 and fall 2016! Keep the momentum going! Your gift to W3000 will provide: Scholarships, Digital Marketing, Support Programs for new students, Retention Efforts to uplift struggling students with peer and faculty mentors, and more!
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A MORE CRUCIAL TIME TO SUPPORT WESTERN THAN RIGHT NOW!
CONTACT US: Western State Colorado University Foundation Post Office Box 1264 Gunnison, CO 81230 (970) 641-2237 phone (970) 641-2239 fax tburggraf@western.edu
Your gift to W3000 will be matched 1:1 by the Western State Foundation! Whether you give $30, $300, $300, $3,000 or more, your gift will have TWICE THE IMPACT! Your gift will lift Western, our students and the Western Nation to their rightful place...the mountaintop! Please give today: Go to www.western.edu/give. Thank you!
Our newest team member, Catherine Lopez, comes to us with 20 years of fundraising experience in higher education and health care, most recently as Senior Director of Advancement for University of Colorado, Denver. Catherine began in her new role as Major Gift Officer for Western on September 1, 2016 and is based in Denver as part of a new front range fundraising initiative. With over 6,000 alumni in the Denver-Metro area alone, Western has a large constituent base that Catherine is engaging for major gifts. In addition to individual giving, she will be grant writing and working on corporate and estate gift planning. “I am humbled and very enthusiastic to be a part of this dynamic team that garners support to strengthen the educational experience for present and future generations at Western” Lopez says. “I look forward to hearing the many wonderful stories about people’s time at Western and what inspires them to give.” If you would like to meet with Catherine to explore how you might enjoy making a difference in the lives of Western students, email her at clopez@western.edu.
THE FOUNDATION WOULD LIKE TO THANK the generous lead donors who, as “Power of 10” investors, committed $100,000 to the Advancement Campaign (of which W3000 is a part): Sean Markey, Gerry and Jenny Shear, Maxine and David Pierce, Ken and Barbara Moffitt, Luftseben, Tom and Carolyn Corbett, and Kathy Kregel and Jim Smith.

Meet Catherine!
The Foundation bids a grateful and affectionate farewell to Deborah Hoskins, Associate Director for nearly 18 years, who served our donors with great care and warmth. She has moved on to spend more time with her family, and is greatly missed.
