Waft the news, ye mountain breezes,
Spread from sea to sea
All the glories of our college, W.S.C.

Academic Traditions Faculty Marshal Since students graduate from a university only upon the recommendation of the faculty, the ceremonial chief of the proceedings is a senior member of the faculty. Today’s Marshal is Professor of Communication Arts Dr. Paul Edwards, who has served Western State Colorado University as a faculty member for 29 years. Professor Edwards is accompanied by two Assistant Faculty Marshals and three students, who were selected by virtue of their leadership and outstanding academic achievement.
The Faculty Marshal’s Mace Since medieval times, the mace — a ceremonial representation of the ancient weapon of war — has served as a symbol of the authority associated with the bearer’s office. The mace at Western was sculpted from native aspen by the late James Irwin, Emeritus Associate Professor of Industrial Education.
Academic Procession There is wide variation in customs concerning academic processions. At Western, the procession is led by the Faculty Marshal, followed by the Assistant Faculty Marshals. The commencement procession is usually composed of the following divisions: • t he speakers, trustees, administrative officers, and other members of the platform party; • the faculty; and • c andidates for degrees, with candidates for advanced degrees in the lead and others in groups according to the degrees for which they are candidates.
Academic Costumes The academic costume — consisting of cap, gown, and hood — originated in about the 12th century. Initially worn primarily for warmth, the material of the gown, the color, and the shape of the hood later came to represent economic, social, and academic status. In the United States, the great majority of the academic costumes now worn are designed in accordance with the general provisions of the Intercollegiate Code of 1895. Under this code, the bachelor’s gown is made with pointed sleeves; the master’s gown is made with long closed sleeves with an arc near the bottom; and doctoral gowns are made with round, open sleeves. Usually gowns are black although some American and many foreign universities use other colors. Bachelors and masters wear untrimmed gowns. Doctoral gowns are trimmed down the front with velvet and feature three velvet bars across the sleeves. The velvet facing and bars may be black, or they may be the color of the field of study. Hoods are also black. The doctoral hood is four feet in length; the master’s is three and one-half feet. Hoods are lined with official colors of the college or university. The velvet hood identifies the field of study to which the degree pertains. At Western, light blue borders represent master’s degree recipients in Teacher Education, brown ones are worn by master’s recipients in Creative Writing, and gold are worn by master’s recipients in Environmental Management. The black mortarboard cap is standard in the United States. Doctors wear a gold tassel. Usually other tassels are black. Persons who have received collegiate degrees wear the tassels on the left quarter of the cap. During graduation ceremonies, caps are customarily removed only during prayers and the singing of the national anthem, and then by men only.
Our Mission Western State Colorado University fulfills its statutory mission by promoting intellectual maturity and personal growth in its students, and graduates citizens prepared to assume constructive roles in local, national, and global communities. Western helps its students to develop the skills and commitments needed to continue learning for the rest of their lives and strives to elucidate the connections unifying academic domains which have traditionally existed separately: the sciences, the liberal arts, and professional programs. The University provides students with a solid foundation of skills in written and spoken communication, problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity. Our programs encourage a breadth and depth of knowledge, which will serve as a foundation for a professional career or graduate study, and an appreciation of values appropriate to a liberally educated individual. Western’s distinctive character emerges from its unity among academic and professional disciplines, its high standards of scholarship, and its unique environment in the mountains of western Colorado.
Our History Western was established in 1901. It was the first college on Colorado’s Western Slope and is the fourth-oldest public college in the state. The institution actually opened for classes in 1911 as the Colorado State Normal School. Originally a preparatory college for teachers, Western’s role changed when it became Western State College of Colorado in 1923. Though for many years Western was known for its graduates who became teachers, it was, in fact, the first Colorado college designed to teach a primarily liberal arts curriculum, and the liberal arts have remained at the core of Western’s academic mission ever since despite increasingly graduating students from the professional fields. Governor Hickenlooper signed HB1331 in June 2012, officially changing Western’s name to Western State Colorado University. The name change took effect on August 1, 2012. Entering its second century of service, Western continues its tradition of providing a high quality education of value while addressing new initiatives. Throughout its history, Western has been a source of innovation and excellence, which is reflected in the quality of its programs and in the successes and achievements of its graduates.
