Editor’s letter
Dear Westfield Shopper,
Photograph by Brian Doben.
elcome to the premier edition of Westfield Style! I’m SO proud to be the Editor-in-Chief of this new publication for Westfield shopping centers across the United States. I like to think of Westfield Style as a road map to help you cross shop the various Westfield retailers and find a look that is perfect for you: the perfect pieces, the perfect fit, the perfect trend for YOUR personal style. So I call this publication a “mag-ual”: part gorgeous magazine with pretty pictures and great interviews, and part informative manual to help you shop easily, wisely, and stylishly. It’s a guide to show you the trends and how to build outfits from them. We’ve got your essentials covered for your body type, occasion, lifestyle, even… ahem... age. We’ve filled it with all the tips and tricks you expect from me on TLC’s What Not To Wear, but with one very big difference: everything—every piece of clothing, every accessory—is available at Westfield retailers RIGHT NOW. We’ve got all the “merch” so you can go from what you see on the page to shopping at your local Westfield instantly. Keep this “mag-ual” with you throughout the season whenever you shop. Bring it with you if you have questions for me during the nationwide Westfield Style Tour this fall. On the Tour, I’m dispatching an amazing “army” of stylists, whom I’ve personally trained, to help guide you—it’s a FREE service during the Tour—to make the best and most flattering purchases for you. Shopping should be fun! Shopping should be easy! Westfield Style is meant to make your shopping experience just that. No more buyer’s remorse. Strategize your purchases. Always feel like you’re dressed your best. I hope you enjoy the guide as much as we enjoyed creating it for you, but let us know what you think at https://www.surveymk.com/ westfieldstyle. Tell us what you’d like to see more of in our next edition. With your feedback, we’ll continue to make this your go-to shopping guide every season. Don’t “shut up!” ;) I used to say “Work Hard, Dress Right,” but with Westfield Style, you won’t have to. Check out the inside back cover of this book for all the details on the Style Tour and the cities I’ll be hitting this fall. Can’t wait to see you!
Tank, $14.95, and blazer, $29.95, both H&M. Earrings, Loft, $29.50.

Q&A
Taylor Made Ann Taylor has long been the go-to brand for chic clothing for the working woman. Here, creative director Lisa Axelson talks about marrying style and comfort, the season’s must-have pieces, and embracing bold color, faux fur, and luxurious lace for fall. As creative director of Ann Taylor, what do your duties entail? It’s my responsibility to create seasonal concepts—or “stories” as I like to call them—that inspire the team to build the next collection and fulfill the needs of modern working women. I oversee all of the product and design for apparel and accessories. My duties range from researching ideas and new fabrics to styling looks, fitting garments, and getting to know what our clients love. What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of the job is working with my design team. The energy that builds as we all begin a new season is contagious. It’s such fun to work in a truly creative and collaborative environment where we all inspire one another. Do you have a design philosophy? To design from the inside out. The new Ann is all about addressing the needs of modern working women, and a big part of that is how style and comfort connect. That’s why we’ve created what I call the “Perfect Pieces,” those go-to pieces in your closet that make you look great and feel great every day. They are designed with stretch fabrics, built with the finest construction, and are cut to flatter. It’s so much easier to put your best self forward if you feel comfortable and confident. We’re a company of women who understand women. Who is the Ann Taylor customer? The Ann Taylor client is a woman
of confidence, character, and style. She’s a working woman with a rich, full life beyond her career. She is modern and uses fashion to say she’s smart, current, and in-the-know. She’s authentic and courageous. What are your favorite trends for this fall season? Bold color. I think it’s so modern to wear bold color with sophisticated neutrals. I love it blocked with neutrals like camel and black. Fur. I am obsessed with faux fur, it’s the perfect luxe layer for any fall look. Lace. It’s so chic and so feminine, and a great way to add some feminine interest to a tailored look.
From top: Lisa Axelson; Ann Taylor’s chic fall collection includes this sleeveless trench, colorful cropped pants, and animal skin tote.
What can we expect to see from Ann Taylor this fall? The fall collection is inspired by women of substance and style. It’s all about American style reinterpreted through a chic, modern lens. It’s about dressing with confidence and joie de vivre with a focus on the elongated silhouette inspired by the ’70s, and simple, beautiful layering pieces and lots of texture. You’ll see bold colors in oranges, reds, gold, and jade, set off by sophisticated neutrals and checks. If you had to choose one item from the fall collection for yourself, and only one, which piece would it be? The new sleeveless trench. It’s a stylish new take on a timeless fashion essential. It’s the perfect “wear now and layer later” piece. I wore it to our Fall 2011 press preview at Beauty and Essex in New York City! n WE ST F IE L D ST Y L E

With September here and new merchandise hitting the shelves, how do you figure out which items are really going to last you more than one season? We’ve done the legwork for you and put together five not-so-basic basics to add to your wardrobe this fall. Not only will your outfits get new life with these items, but we’ll also show you how to maximize your investment by showing you a few different ways to dress each piece!
CARDI-WRAP As it gets colder, it’s essential to have a multi-use layering item that can take you from the office to dinner without worry. We love this wrap not only because it’s super-comfy to shrug on over a casual weekend outfit, but it can also add sophistication at the office when thrown over a dress or blouse. CROPPED PANT This might look like just another black pant, but it’s cropped—a big trend for the season, and also classically timeless. Wear it to work with heels and a jacket, to brunch with flats and a sweater, or dress it up for evening with a sexy top. Remember: The pant should hit at or just above the ankle to achieve the most flattering silhouette. Left: Pant, Express, $69.99. Make the most of these pants by alternating your tops. Wear it with printed neutrals and bright colors.
I love light-colored platforms with black opaque tights, but if you have shorter legs stick with black heels to make them appear longer.
ANIMAL PRINT Despite its reputation as “loud” or “hard to wear,” an animal print is one of the easiest ways to create visual interest in an outfit, and one of the most versatile items a woman can have in her closet. Treat it as a neutral and it will become your best friend! We’ve dressed this sweater three ways—’60s mod, trendy, and sophisticated—and each look utilizes the flexibility of the print. Q&A
Fashion Forward Season after season, retail giant H&M is consistently on trend. US public relations manager Jennifer Ward gives us the inside scoop on the company’s history, its hugely anticipated line with Versace—and exactly what’s in store for fall. Tell us the history of the H&M brand. H&M’s founder, Erling Persson, began as a businessman in Västerås, Sweden. During a trip to the US in 1947, Persson became interested in a new kind of clothing store that combined a high turnover of garments with low prices. Upon his return home, he opened the first Hennes retail store in Västerås, the date was September 13, 1947. It was called “Hennes”—the Swedish word for “hers”—because at the time it exclusively sold women’s clothing. Hennes expanded steadily during the 1950s and 1960s, and when the company opened in Stockholm in 1968, Persson acquired Maurtiz Widforss, a hunting and gun store. The acquisition included the store’s stock of men’s clothing, and Persson later changed the company’s name to Hennes & Mauritz. Today, H&M has more than 2,200 stores in 40 countries on four continents. Who is the H&M customer? The H&M customer is anyone interested in fashion. Our collection consists of everything from the latest fashion trends to quality basics for men, women, and children. There is something for every age and personality. What is H&M’s design philosophy? H&M gets inspiration from trade shows, music, art, and street fashion. We start designing our collections up to 18 months in advance, and always focus on giving our customer high fashion at affordable prices. We have over 100 in-house designers, and travel around the world to bring our customers the latest trends.
What are your favorite fall trends? This fall the trends are simple, modern, and elegant. There’s a return of ladylike elegance with an edge. We’ll see earth tones and shades of navy, mustard, and camel. I love this color palette, which is a drastic change from this summer’s bright colors. My favorites are the tweed jackets, blouses, and pencil skirts—I can’t wait to channel my inner Jackie O! There’s also a ’70s influence this season, so we’ll see longer skirts and wide trousers paired with blouses and chunky knits. The collection is very grown-up, but also very easy to wear. Versace for H&M will be available on November 19th! What can you tell us about the collection? The power of Versace is that it has always produced clothing that combines provocative glamour with impeccable design. Versace for H&M is a celebratory collection that will offer customers some of the brand’s most iconic pieces. It’s the first time that Versace has looked back into its past, making this collection one of the year’s biggest fashion events, and an exciting chance for a whole new audience to wear Versace. It’s an unexpected choice for H&M, and much different from our past collaborations. The collection will include roughly 40 pieces of apparel and 20 accessories for women, and 20 pieces of apparel and 10 accessories for men. And for the first time in an H&M designer collaboration, we’ll also include select pieces for the home. The collection will be available at H&M’s upper price bracket because of the fantastic materials, beautiful details, and excellent finishes. n

Q&A
Department Store Chic With fashion and beauty events, designer collections, and trends galore, Nordstrom is bringing the cool factor back into the department store experience. Fashion Director Gregg Andrews talks trends, shopping strategy, and can’t-miss gift items. As Fashion Director of Nordstrom, what do your duties entail? I support our fashion office, which is a national team that produces all of our live fashion events across the country. This team coordinates everything from trunk shows to designer personal appearances to charity fashion shows and gala store openings. I partner with our event and visual teams on conceptualizing these events to ensure that we are offering our customers the best and most unique experience possible. I also work with our visual stylists to bring our monthly fashion messages to life in our windows and throughout our stores. Our goal is to feature the most important trends and items of the season in a way that’s inspiring and relatable to our customer. What is your favorite part of your job? I love showing our customers amazing designer looks hot off the runway—it’s like giving them a ticket to the collections, and it makes them feel like a real fashion insider. I enjoy showing women how to use the runway like a compass to determine the direction fashion is going, and then use that as inspiration to update their wardrobes and create looks that express their own personal style. What kinds of events can shoppers look forward to at Nordstrom this fall? There is always something going on in our stores, but our Cosmetic Trend Shows are a huge hit with our customers. We bring in professional models and make-up artists from all the major cosmetic lines to
show women how to update their look from head to toe. We’re also very excited about launching celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe’s new collection in select stores. She has all the must-have pieces for fall. Everything is very wearable, but they still have her signature touch of red carpet glam. Any other new designers coming to stores? Yes, in addition to the Rachel Zoe collection we’ll have Cut 25, Carven, Catherine Deane, Zadig & Voltaire, and Acne. When shopping at a department store with so many choices, what strategic advice would you give to your customer to find her look? Start by knowing three things: What type of occasion are you shopping for? Is it for work, weekend, a night out, or a special event? What are your best features? Those are the things you want to play-up and draw attention to. What are your fit challenges? You know… those little problem areas you want to disguise. Next, look to an expert to make your shopping experience as easy as possible. What are your favorite fall trends? There’s a retro-feminine trend that draws inspiration from the 1940s, ’60s, and ’70s. The looks are chic and sophisticated, and with beautiful fluidity. After seasons of embellishment and decoration the move toward minimalism looks very fresh. Is there a can’t-miss gift that every woman should have? A soft, bow-front blouse is the perfect holiday gift because it
works in any woman’s wardrobe. A real fashionista might wear it with winter shorts and boots, while another woman might give it a ’70s feel by pairing it with wide-leg pants or an A-line skirt. A more classic woman could use it to add a touch of femininity to a tailored jacket. n Above: A look from Rachel Zoe’s fall/winter collection, which will be launched in select Nordstrom stores. Right: a look from Nordstrom’s fall catalog.

Q&A
Sole Survivor As senior line builder at Aldo, Colleen Bradish is a key figure behind the brand’s always-stylish footwear, accessories, designer collaborations, and splashy ad campaigns. Here, Bradish explains how seasonal trends and big ideas go from concept to completion.
Colleen Bradish. Below: An image from Aldo’s Fall/ Winter 2011 ad campaign featuring Lily Donaldson with Criminal Minds star Matt Gubler.
As senior line builder, what do your duties entail? I build the lines for the Aldo ladies’ collection by helping identify what the collection should consist of, and allocating styles for each category. Additionally, I work closely with our product development division (to build a well-balanced collection season after season), our suppliers (for outsourcing), our in-house designers (on developing styles and color stories), and finally, with our visual presentation team (on merchandising strategies). I oversee and provide input throughout each step, from conception to the shoes on your feet. How do you go about monitoring trends? And how do you translate those to your designers? I think when you’re in fashion you catch trends almost through osmosis; it’s not that we seek or analyze, it’s more that we live and breathe them. It’s not all from runways and designers—it can come from a book, an exhibition at the Met, or one of the Biennials. All trends are about listening and paying attention. I definitely get most of my inspiration from styles I see on the street. As for translating this to the designers, they live it like I do. We’ll often have meetings and discover we have the same inspiration. How do you keep up with the Aldo customer and what she is looking for? It’s simple—I am the Aldo customer. We also all lock ourselves in a conference room every week and carefully review sales reports, analyzing which trends and looks
within our current collection are the strongest amongst our customers. How important are other accessories—like handbags, sunglasses, necklaces, earrings, and hats—to the Aldo brand? We’re all about those final touches that make the outfit. I believe that shoes and handbags are a match made in heaven. For us it’s all about creating that complete look. What are your “must-have” items from the fall collection? “Ugland,” a statement-making wedge that’s great for parties and going out; “Killion,” great smoking slippers—a big trend right now; and “Laughhead,” because I live in riding boots during the fall and winter and these make me feel instantly sophisticated, even if I’m wearing jeans and a white shirt. How did Aldo get involved with creating collections for up-and-coming designers for Fashion Week? Every season designers create these incredible collections, and by the time they have to show at Fashion Week it’s a mad panic for shoes. We finally just told our designers, “Okay forget about what exists in our collection, if you could have any shoe to complete your vision, what would that shoe look like?” And with that our Fashion Week collaborations with designers was born. For Spring/Summer 2012 we’ll be collaborating with the likes of Preen, Cushnie et Ochs, Libertine, J.W. Anderson, Faster by Mark Fast, and Christian Cota. These designers are incredibly talented, so to be able to support and nurture their vision is a real gift. n

If you have a straight rather than hourglass frame, volume really works to create curves. Look for pieces that do cinch the waistline, so you never look like you’re drowning in your clothes. Deep V-necks and backless pieces are great for evening if you have a smaller chest!
To camouflage a tummy, a fitted jacket that hits at the hip will be your best friend. Look for one with an inverted hem that narrows the entire midsection. A higher-waisted, slightly bootcut jean locks and loads the tummy while lengthening your leg line for an easy way to slim your entire body.

Try V-necks to elongate your neckline and blouses in stretch fabrics that hug your curves without pulling at the bust. Always wear a supportive, well-fitting bra to keep the “girls” up and high. Look for lighter-colored bottoms with visual interest and darker matte tops to balance a larger top half.
A flared skirt or dress that accentuates your natural waistline helps camouflage a wider hip. Wear a sling-back heel or classic pump and stay away from an ankle strap or clunky shoe to keep your bottom half looking as long as possible. Pull the focus upward with statement earrings or a bold necklace. WE ST F IE L D ST Y L E
