JEWISH HOLIDAYS Jewish holidays begin at sundown the evening before the date listed
_______________________ SHEMINI ATZERET Celebrated the day after Sukkot and thus sometimes considered an extension of the holiday. Marks the first time Tefillat Geshem (prayer for rain) is recited; a practice that continues until Pesach. 22 Tishrei October 10, 2020 _______________________ SIMCHAT TORAH Celebrates the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle. After finishing the last sentence of the book of Devarim (Deuteronomy), congregants joyously parade the Torah around the synagogue seven times. The new cycle begins immediately with a reading from Beresheit (Genesis). 23 Tishrei October 11, 2020 ______________________ CHANUKAH Chanukah — Hebrew for “dedication” — commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army, and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The miracle of Chanukah is that only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day, and yet it lasted for eight full days, which we celebrate with the lighting of a chanukiah. 25 Kislev-2 Tevet December 1 1-18, 2020
10 | 2020 ALL THINGS JEWISH ®

Some also fast on the day before Purim to remember the fast by the Jews of Persia at Esther’s request. 14 Adar February 26, 2021 _______________________ PASSOVER An eight-day holiday celebrating the liberation of the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. At the seder, the Haggadah is read and symbolic foods are eaten. Jews refrain from eating leavened products to remember how the Israelites hadn’t the time to let their bread rise before fleeing. 15-22 Nisan March 28-April 4, 2021 (first seder, March 27)
_______________________ YOM HASHOAH HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY Day chosen by the Israeli Knesset to mourn the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. It also marks the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem which culminated in the city’s destruction. 17 Tammuz June 27, 2021

Congregation B’nai Israel in Bridgeport, was evacuated — and no bombs found — on Oct. 25, 2019, while police investigated two bomb threats. The threat came two days after the first anniversary of the attack on Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.
We asked our kids...
what’s in it for them? Tyler C. replied: “... My Bar Mitzvah connected me to my spiritual side...As I studied, I learned that opening yourself up to Judaism can really change your life!...I’m ready now to give back to my community...” Come discover what it means to you & your kids to celebrate Judaism in our open, friendly, family & community oriented synagogue. In April 2020, Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford launched a free and confidential emotional support hotline. JFS ONCALL is not a crisis line, nor is it a replacement for therapeutic telehealth appointments. Rather, JFS ONCALL is an outlet for community members to express their worries, be heard, and gain support — an essential service anytime, but especially during the stressful pandemic. “JFS is on the forefront of responding to persons impacted by this pandemic in many different ways and we are prepared to provide the requisite services as the needs increase,” said JFS President Pia Rosenberg Toro.

Rabbi Yarchi bringing Israel to Bi-Cultural 8th grader Jason Kwalwasser. Just as the graduating class at Stamford’s Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy was gearing up for the annual 8th-grade trip to Israel — COVID-19 happened. And, just like that, what should have been the trip of a lifetime was abruptly cancelled. Students were devastated. And so, although nothing could take its place, teachers came up with a virtual Israel Experience trip that helped soften the blow. The school’s "Israel Zoom Experience” kicked off in early May with a social distancing visit to each student by Rabbi Ofir and Adi Yarchi, the school’s shlichim (Israeli emissaries), who came bearing Israel-themed gift bags. For the next 10 days, students enjoyed a host of online Israelrelated activities in every subject — from Hebrew language to science to history and art. Rabbi Tzachi and Morah Elana, the teachers who conceived and coordinated the online ‘trip,’ summed up the experience, saying, “We would never attempt to actually replace the Israel trip with a Zoom call! Rather, we sought to find solace through uniting as a class and engaging with the history, culture, and land of our people.”
During an examination of Southern Israel, BCHA science teacher Christopher Graseck conducted a science lab on salinization and the Dead Sea that gave them an understanding about the importance of water in Israeli policy.
The experiences of Lone Soldiers in the IDF — including Massachusetts native Noah — were highlighted during the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces (FID) National Gala, held virtually in September 2020.

WELCOMING THE STRANGER You shall not oppress a stranger, since you yourselves know the feelings of a stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Exodus 23:9). That universal message was the theme of “Under One Roof: Welcoming the Stranger,” an innovative art exhibit that was on display at the Mandell JCC in West Hartford last fall. Spearheaded by the JCC, the exhibit featured artwork created by the clients, staff and members of 47 Greater Hartford agencies and organizations – Jewish agencies, houses of worship, social service organizations and other non-profits. Each work represents what “Welcoming the Stranger” means to each agency or organization. The Mandell JCC’s own piece was a canvas awash in tiny hand-prints of all colors. When you turned the doorknob on an actual mini-door inserted in the center, you came face to face with a mirror. “The 90 individual squares and hands fit together creating a unique and cohesive canvas representing the Mandell JCC’s vibrant and diverse community – people of all backgrounds and at every age and stage of life,” the JCC explained in a note accompanying the piece.

Miriam Schreiber was just six years old when World War II began. When the Nazis invaded, she and her family made their way from their small village of Długosiodło in Poland to Russia, seeking safety but finding herself imprisoned at a Siberian work camp instead. Freed a year after the war ended, she and her family made their way to a displaced persons camp in Germany before her journey took her to several countries, including Israel, and finally, to the United States. After more than 50 years in West Hartford, where Schreiber, now 88, and her late husband Saul raised their two sons, the great-grandmother of three still has one big regret – she was never able to go to school and did not receive a high school diploma. “It’s been a real dream of mine for all my life, because I never got a diploma from any school – not from kindergarten, not from grade school and not from high school,” she says. “I have never had reunions; I have never had schoolmates. I have never had the kavod – the honor — to get a diploma.” Schreiber finally got that kavod on Sunday, August 16 when family and friends
gathered at the New England Jewish Academy (NEJA) in West Hartford to witness the Holocaust survivor receive her own honorary high school diploma. It all came about after NEJA students, together with NEJA Upper Division principal, Dr. Richard Nabel, sat down with Schreiber at her home to hear her tell her story. When she was done, NEJA’s senior class voted unanimously to present Schreiber with a diploma at their 2020 graduation. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 that ceremony was ultimately cancelled in favor of a virtual graduation held online in June. But the class was determined, and so, on Aug. 16, 2020, Schreiber was presented with her diploma at a special ceremony. Schreiber was thrilled to receive her high school diploma — but she was even happier to tell her story. “I want people to understand what we went through — it was an unbelievable horror,” she said. “I want people to understand each other a little bit more and be more courteous and loving. You will accomplish a lot more with kindness than with hate.”

On June 2, 2020, Hebrew Senior Care in West Hartford opened the doors of its newly expanded behavioral health hospital, which specializes in the care and treatment of older adults who are experiencing mental health issues. “Connecticut’s geriatric population continues to grow, while there is a critical shortage of psychiatric services that meet their specific needs. By expanding our capacity, we are now the largest behavioral health hospital in Connecticut dedicated to the care of seniors,” said Denise Peterson, RN, FACHE, president and CEO of Hebrew Senior Care (pictured here with several new board members at the agency’s recent annual meeting.

For years now, a group of women living in The Towers, an assisted-living complex in New Haven, have been knitting and crocheting blankets that they then donate to the New Haven and Hamden police departments, who keep them in their cars for trauma-tized children. When the pandemic hit this spring, the women ramped up their produc-tion to help those in need, says The Towers Volunteer Coordinator Sarah Moskowitz — who showed off some of the group’s handmade blankets.
Times such as these add support to our belief that home care is safe care. For the last 15 years, Companions for Living has helped people remain in their own homes, safely and independently. Now more than ever, we are adhering to strict protocols to help ensure the safety of our Clients and Caregivers.

When the pandemic began, Samantha Renzulli worried about how it would affect her elderly friends at Jewish Senior Services in Bridgeport, whom she had met through Better Together, a Jewish intergenerational program. So she and her classmates at Merkaz Community High School for Judaic Studies organized a weekly "erev shabbat" car parade around the facility in long caravans of decorated cars, as residents and staff look on from balconies. They’ve also delivered more than 130 bouquets of flowers to residents, and a trove of books, toys and toiletries for staff.
Imagine the peace of mind knowing your family member has our help at home.
Trusted companionship, friendship, and assistance with a commitment to our clients that was born out of necessity and has evolved into a personal mission to provide independence, security and comfort to seniors & their families.

NYC’s Celebrate Israel parade is canceled for the first time By Shira Hanau (JTA) — Among the many signs of summer that the coronavirus pandemic silenced: the annual parade that draws tens of thousands of supporters of Israel to New York City’s Fifth Avenue. Instead, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, which organizes the Celebrate Israel parade, that had been scheduled for June 7, quickly coordinated a virtual event, “We’re saddened by the necessity of canceling this parade,” said Michael Miller, the council’s executive vice president and CEO. “Its absence on Fifth Avenue will be notable, but its absence in the hearts of New Yorkers, Jewish and non-Jewish, who support Israel is incalculable.” The Celebrate Israel parade was first held in 1965 on Riverside Drive. In recent years, the parade has marched up Fifth Avenue. Approximately 40,000 people march in the parade each year, according to the organizers, including thousands of Jewish day school students. In announcing the decision to cancel the event, along with all other non-essential events scheduled for June, including the Pride Parade and Puerto rican Day Parade, Mayor Bill de Blasio (seen here marching at the 2017 Celebrate Israel Parade) said, “They will be back. That joy and that pride that all of these events bring will be back.”

INSERTION INFORMATION:
Wedding invitation of Lubavitcher rebbe discovered at National Library of Israel By Marcy Oster (JTA) — An invitation to the 1928 wedding of the seventh and last Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, was discovered at the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem. Schneerson popularized the Chabad-Lubavitch hasidic movement and became of one of the most influential forces in the Jewish world. The discovery of the invitation came just days before the 25th anniversary of his death on June 12, 2019. Several versions of the invitation were prepared for the wedding of Schneerson and Chaya Mushka, the daughter of the sixth Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak. The invitation at the National Library, discovered in the archive of Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, a cousin who moved at a young age to Palestine, was sent to invitees who could not physically be present at the event but encourages them to celebrate from afar. While the groom was then a student at the University of Berlin and the bride lived with her parents in Riga, the wedding was held in Warsaw because it was a central location and not under Soviet rule. Soviet authorities prevented Schneerson’s parents, who lived in Yekatrinoslav, Ukraine, from traveling to Warsaw to attend the wedding. They held a celebration at their home for hundreds of guests. “At this early date, it wasn’t at all clear that Rabbi Menachem Mendel would eventually succeed his father-in-law as the Lubavitcher rebbe,” said Rabbi Dr. Zvi Leshem, head of the Gershom Scholem Collection for Research in Kabbalah and Hasidism at the National Library of Israel. “In hindsight, we see that not only did he

become the rabbi of Lubavitch Hasidism, but without a doubt one of the most famous Hasidic and even Jewish figures known throughout the entire world.” Schneerson’s cousin Levi Yitzchak also was born in Russia. When he moved to Palestine he became a member of the NILI underground organization, serving as a liaison between its operatives and British intelligence during World War I. Following the war, Levi Yitzchak Schneerson reported on Arab affairs throughout what is today Israel, Jordan and Syria. He composed poetry, mostly in Russian, and published two books: an autobiography about his time in the NILI underground, and an early history of the northern Israeli city of Hadera. The archive was recently reviewed with a grant from the Leir Foundation.

By Ben Sales (JTA) — Aboud Dandachi isn’t Jewish. Or Israeli. Or Italian. Or sick with coronavirus. He’s a Muslim from Syria living in Canada. But when he read the Jewish Telegraphic Agency story about an Italian boy whose bar mitzvah was curtailed because of the rapidly spreading virus, Dandachi responded in a way he figured Jews might appreciate: He donated $18 in honor of Ruben Golran to the Canadian branch of the Jewish National Fund to plant a tree in Israel in the teen’s honor. “This is what I know how to do,” said Dandachi, 43, of Toronto. “I’ve had friends in Canada, Jewish friends who have children, and they seem to appreciate it. That’s how I know how to commemorate such an occasion.” This is far from Dandachi’s first encounter with Israel. After fleeing Syria as a refugee in 2013, he has been an outspoken supporter of Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Dandachi, who moved to Canada in 2017, even supports Netanyahu’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank. An IT specialist by profession, Dandachi founded an organization called Thank You Am Israel in appreciation of Israeli efforts to aid Syrian refugees. Ruben’s bar mitzvah in Milan last February was supposed to have 600 guests. But Milanese authorities banned large public gatherings due to the spread of COVID-19, so the celebration became much smaller. His father, Elia, told JTA that he has been moved by the response to his son’s predicament. In addition to Dandachi’s gift, Golran heard from a Jewish person in New York who plans to send a painting to the family in honor of the bar mitzvah. “I was in tears next to my computer,” Golran said. “To see that there’s a Muslim from Syria who donated a tree in our land, you understand that this is something special, special, special.”
