West Hartford Chamber of Commerce:

Where Community Meets Means Business

The West Hartford Chamber is not just a business organization but a vital part of the community, driven by its Community Engagement Committee. Through a series of well-organized events, the Chamber connects local businesses, residents, and leaders, enhancing community bonds. Here's a closer look at some key events that highlight the Chamber's role in shaping West Hartford.

MAYOR’S STATE OF THE TOWN ADDRESS

Every March, the Chamber hosts the Mayor’s State of the Town Address, a crucial event where West Hartford's Mayor reviews the previous year's achievements and outlines future plans. This gathering attracts political figures, town employees, business leaders, and engaged residents, all invested in the town’s progress.

The event provides an open forum for discussing the town’s most pressing issues, allowing attendees to reflect on successes and challenges while networking with influential community members. It’s a must-attend event that offers valuable insights into the town's direction and fosters strong connections among those shaping West Hartford’s future.

WEHA WELLNESS: HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR

In May, the Chamber’s WeHa Wellness Health & Wellness Fair takes center stage at Blue Back Square. This annual open-air event reflects the Chamber’s commitment to promoting health and well-being within the community by bringing together a diverse group of health and wellness providers.

The fair offers residents access to a variety of services, including medical professionals, spa and salon services, fitness centers, nutritionists, mental health counselors, and non-profits focused on health and wellness. It’s an event where the community can explore the latest health trends, receive expert advice, and connect with local resources that support a healthier lifestyle. WeHa Wellness is more than

just a fair; it’s a celebration of community well-being.

ANNUAL MEETING & SPOTLIGHT AWARDS

June marks the Chamber’s Annual Meeting & Spotlight Awards, an event that celebrates the outstanding contributions of its members. The evening begins with the election of the new Board of Directors and Executive Committee, setting the course for the Chamber’s future.

The event then transitions into a celebration of the past year’s successes, honoring businesses and individuals who have made significant impacts on the community. Awards include the prestigious Noah Webster Award for exceptional community commitment and the Elizabeth Gustin Basil Women’s Leadership Award, recognizing outstanding women leaders. Entertainment by students from West Hartford’s School of Rock adds a lively touch, making the evening both inspiring and enjoyable.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Chamber’s annual Golf Tournament is a highlight for those who enjoy combining business networking with a day of leisure. Held at one of the area’s beautiful golf courses, this event is the Chamber’s largest fundraiser of the year, supporting its programs and services.

Participants enjoy a full day that begins with a breakfast buffet, followed by 18 holes of golf. On-course games add excitement, and the day concludes with a cocktail hour, afternoon barbecue, and a teacup auction. The Golf Tournament is more than a fundraiser; it’s an opportunity to build relationships and enjoy a day of camaraderie within the community.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Every October, the Chamber hosts the Economic Development Update, where the Town’s Economic Development Department presents the latest on West Hartford’s growth. This event provides a detailed overview of new, ongoing, and

future development projects, offering valuable insights into the town’s evolving economic landscape.

This update is essential for business leaders and residents who want to stay informed about West Hartford’s economic progress and future plans. It’s a forwardlooking event that highlights how the town is growing and adapting to meet the needs of its community.

HOLIDAY STROLL

The Chamber’s Holiday Stroll, held annually the Thursday following Thanksgiving, is one of West Hartford’s most cherished events. This free, familyfriendly celebration transforms Blue Back Square and West Hartford Center into a festive wonderland, drawing thousands of attendees.

The Holiday Stroll features a variety of activities, including visits with Santa & Mrs. Claus, delicious treats from local restaurants, a Menorah Lighting, and performances on multiple stages. Victorian carolers, fire truck tours, and other holidaythemed activities add to the charm of this event, which attracts 5,000-8,000 people each year. The Holiday Stroll exemplifies the Chamber’s commitment to fostering community spirit and celebrating the diverse cultures that make West Hartford unique.

These events are just a few examples of how the West Hartford Chamber strengthens both the business community and the town’s social fabric, making it a key player in enhancing the quality of life in West Hartford.

Fall into Cleanliness: Your Essensial Fall Cleaning Checklist

As the leaves begin to change and the air becomes crisp, it's time to transition your home from the carefree days of summer to the cozy comforts of fall. In this article, we'll share a comprehensive fall cleaning checklist to help you prepare your home for the autumn season ahead.

DEEP CLEANING FOR A FRESH START

Dust and Vacuum: Start by dusting and vacuuming your home from top to bottom, paying special attention to areas that may have been neglected during the summer months. Dust light fixtures, ceiling fans, baseboards, and window sills, and vacuum upholstery and carpets to remove dirt, dust, and allergens.

Clean and Declutter: Declutter and organize each room in your home to create a clean and clutter-free environment. Donate or discard items you no longer need or use, and find storage solutions for seasonal items to free up space and create a sense of openness. Since you will be spending more time indoors.

Kitchen and Bathroom Deep Clean: Give your kitchen and bathrooms a thorough deep clean to remove grease, grime, and soap scum. Scrub countertops, sinks, and appliances, and clean and disinfect toilets, showers, and tubs to ensure a hygienic environment for your family.

SEASONAL MAINTENANCE AND PREPARATION

Inspect and Seal Windows: Check windows and doors for drafts and leaks, and seal any gaps or cracks to improve energy efficiency and keep cold air out. Consider installing storm windows or weather stripping for added insulation during the cooler months.

Service Heating System: Schedule a

professional inspection and maintenance service for your heating system to ensure it's in good working condition for the upcoming season. Replace air filters, clean vents, and check for any signs of damage or malfunction.

Clean and Store Outdoor Furniture: Clean and store outdoor furniture and accessories to protect them from harsh weather conditions. Wash cushions and pillows, and store them indoors or in a dry, ventilated area to prevent mold and mildew growth.

COZY

TOUCHES AND SEASONAL DECOR

Add Warmth with Textiles: Incorporate cozy textiles like throw blankets, cushions, and area rugs into your home decor to add warmth and comfort. Choose rich, autumnal colors and textures to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that reflects the beauty of the season.

Embrace Seasonal Scents: Infuse your home with seasonal scents like cinnamon, pumpkin spice, and apple cider to evoke the essence of fall. Use scented candles, essential oil diffusers, or simmer pots to fill your home with delightful aromas that will delight your senses.

Decorate with Fall Accents: Enhance your home decor with fall-inspired accents like pumpkins, gourds, and autumn foliage. Create a festive centerpiece for your dining table, adorn your mantel with seasonal decor, and incorporate touches of nature throughout your home to celebrate the beauty of fall. Retirement Seen Through Your Eyes

RESTAURANT REVIEW

How do you picture your future? Some see retirement as a time to start a new career. Others see it as a time to travel. Still others plan to spend more time with family and friends. With that in mind, here are some things to consider.

What do you absolutely need to accomplish? If you could only get four or five things done in retirement, what would they be? Answering this question might lead you to compile a “short list” of life goals, and while they may have nothing to do with money, the financial decisions you make may be integral to pursuing them.

What would revitalize you? Some people retire with no particular goals at all. After weeks or months of respite, ambition may return. They start to think about what pursuits or adventures they could embark on to make these years special. Others have known for decades what dreams they will follow ... and yet, when the time to follow them arrives, those dreams may unfold differently than anticipated and may even be supplanted by new ones.

In retirement, time is really your most valuable asset. With more free time and opportunity for reflection, you might find your old dreams giving way to new ones. Who should you share your time with? Here is another profound choice you get to make in retirement. The quick answer to this question for many retirees would be “family.” Today, we have nuclear families, blended families, extended families; some people think of their friends or their employees as family.

How much do you anticipate spending? We can’t control all retirement expenses, but we can manage some of them. The thought of downsizing your home may have crossed your mind. One benefit of downsizing is that it can potentially lead to no mortgage or a more manageable mortgage payment.

Could you leave a legacy? Many of us would like to give our kids or grandkids a good start in life, but leaving an inheritance can be trickier than many realize. Tax laws

are constantly changing, and the strategies that worked years ago may have more limited benefits today.

Keep in mind this article is for informational purposes only and is not a replacement for real-life advice, so make sure to consult your tax or legal professional before modifying any part of your overall estate strategy.

How are you preparing for retirement? This is the most important question of all. If you feel you need to prepare more for the future or reexamine your existing strategy in light of recent changes in your life, conferring with a financial professional experienced in retirement approaches may offer some guidance.

A Match Made in Connecticut: Rebecca Yungk and Michael Fallon A Love Story Blossoms in the Nutmeg State

In the heart of Connecticut, amidst the charming towns and rolling hills, a love story unfolded between Rebecca Yungk and Michael Fallon. Their journey began in the world of politics, where their shared passion for public service ignited a connection that would blossom into a lifelong commitment.

Rebecca, a native of New Britain, grew up surrounded by the love and support of her parents, John and Rosemarie Yungk. Her father, a seasoned professional at Aetna, instilled in her a strong work ethic and a passion for technology. Her mother, a dedicated caregiver at New England Home Care, taught her the importance of compassion and empathy.

Michael, hailing from Higganum, was raised by his parents, Frederick and Deborah Fallon. His father, a seasoned professional in the nonprofit sector, instilled in him a sense of social responsibility and a commitment to making a difference. His mother, a long-time employee at Connecticut Light & Power, taught him the value of hard work and perseverance.

Their paths crossed in 2019 when

Rebecca was working as the Deputy Campaign Manager for Middletown Mayor Ben Florshiem. Their friendship evolved into a romance, fueled by their shared values and mutual respect.

On a romantic weekend getaway to New York City in April 2023, Michael proposed to Rebecca in the picturesque Garden of St. Luke's. The proposal was a culmination of months of planning and a heartfelt expression of his love.

On August 16, 2024, Rebecca and Michael exchanged vows at the Delamar Hotel in West Hartford, a venue that held special significance for them due to its convenient location and elegant ambiance. Their ceremony was officiated by their dear friend and neighbor, Devonna Dionne, a Justice of the Peace.

The reception was a celebration of love, laughter, and good times. The couple's first dance was to "Lover" by Taylor Swift, a heartfelt song that perfectly captured their love story. The DJ from Fox Haus Events kept the party going all night long with energy and lively music.

Rebecca and Michael's honeymoon was a relaxing getaway to Secrets Moxche Resort in Rivera Maya, Mexico. They spent their days lounging by the pool, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and enjoying the beautiful scenery.

As they embark on their journey as a married couple, Rebecca and Michael are excited to continue building their lives together and making a positive impact on their community. Their love story is a testament to the power of connection, passion, and shared values.

First Stop on Our Rhone River Tour: Arles

After our time in Nice and Monaco, it was time to take the coach over to our river cruise ship – the Emerald Liberté in Arles, France at the mouth of the Rhône. The Rhône starts in the Alps and runs through Lake Geneva and southern France, to the Mediterranean Sea. Our sailing would take us north to Lyon.

We got to settle in on the first evening and walk around the town of Arles. The following day we had a very fun and knowledgeable guide share his stories with us. Within a short distance, we were in front of the Arles Amphitheatre, a 2,000-year-old structure where thousands of spectators once watched chariot races. We meandered through the hallways and sat out in

the sun to see where the races took place, while imagining the liveliness, as described by our host, before age and neglect took its toll on the structure. I also visited various small shops in the area that specialized in local products: lavender, rice, salt, and French cloth. There were other UNESCO World

Heritage monuments, including the 1st century Roman theater and a 12th century church.

Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles, and it was in Arles that he painted “Starry Night Over the Rhône”. The beautiful “Café Terrace in the Evening in Arles” was painted here as well, and the building

he depicted still stands today. This is also where Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin tried to work together, but their relationship failed, which was followed by van Gogh cutting off part of his ear, and then admitting himself to the local hospital. Van Gogh painted the courtyard of the hospital, which looks the same as it did during his stay.

An extra bonus was visiting Les Baux de Provence. Considered one of the most beautiful villages in France, it also has a spicey history. Human settlement here dates to 6,000 BC; the village’s dominating position on a high plateau was an asset to later inhabitants such as the local warrior clan in the Middle Ages. Later the village became known as a mecca for troubadours from all of Europe, only to win a different sort of fame through the ghastly goings-on under its ruler known as “The Scourge of Provence”, Raymond de Turenne! Strolling around the historic monuments and charming shops was a wonderful way to finish up our day discovering Arles, France.

The evening was topped off with a Provençal dinner on the Liberté hosted by Fabien Morreale, the Top Chef France finalist. What a way to start this part of the journey – the chef remembers learning how to cook with his grandmother, and that experience is the basis for his creations. Fabulous clean flavors from local markets, combined to perfection!

Second Stop on Our Rhone River Tour: Avignon

Our second city stop on our Emerald River Cruise was the town of Avignon. This town is known for its UNESCO World-Heritage site of the Palais des Papes, built over two decades by the Popes who resided there during most of the 1300s, having been forced to relocate there from Rome by the French king. It is one of the largest medieval buildings in Europe and has a beautiful exterior. The original Old Palace was constructed on a stone outcropping, and you can see where an addition was made later on. In addition, there is a beautiful church that can be visited and from the steps of which you can look out over the Rhone River. We had a wonderful tour guide who also shared some of the palace’s more modern history with us. The Palais des Papes is the cornerstone for the square where exhibitions and festivals take place in the region. Outside of the square is a busy town where you can stop to get lunch, buy pastries, and local goods. I did all three!

After the visit to the palais, I took the coach bus to see the Pont du Gard, a bridge 160 feet high, built by the Romans in the first century as part of an aqueduct. The aqueduct was used for about 800 years. The Pont du Gard was easy to climb up to go across this masterpiece of Roman engineering. If you look at a 5-euro banknote, you will see that the back has a view of the Pont du Gard.

Finally, I had the opportunity to go to a classical concert. It was amazing! After dinner we walked over to the concert, which was in a small Provençal city church that had been reimagined as a concert venue with seating for about forty people. The calm inside the former church, as well as the acoustics, allowed for a beautiful, focused performance. Three local musicians offered classical music that brought us through a swirling wave of emotions. Bravo! Another wonderful day in the south of France.

GARDENING

Autumn is a New Start in the Garden

Ithink many of us, whether we have children in school or not, think of September as a new start--almost as a second new year. Certainly, for those who celebrate the Jewish high holy days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, September or early October literally is the start of a new year!

And we are blessed to live in a place where autumn is the most beautiful season as well with its changing leaves, bright days and cool crisp nights.

Our gardens too relish change from whatever summer has brought. They seem to take on a renewed glow. Many perennials and shrubs have a smaller, second bloom before winter sets in.

The palette of colors in the garden shifts from vibrant, bright colors to muted ones that harmonize with the changing leaves.

So, what should we, as gardeners, do to help our gardens this fall--while still giving ourselves time to enjoy all that our beautiful state has to offer?

While many traditionalists still “clean up the garden,” as it is called, a newer approach is to leave much of the garden in place until springtime to assist over-wintering pollinators and beneficial insects.

Don’t leave leaves on the lawn, because it can’t tolerate that.

But in the garden, let the leaves fall and remain. Then, to keep them in place, so they don’t blow around all winter, keep the stems of your perennials standing all winter. If there’s nothing holding the leaves in place, they will blow all over your neighborhood all winter and get your neighbors angry. And that’s not helpful for the garden, and not what you want for neighbor relationships.

If you have any perennials that had disease—and you know the ones I am talking about, the usual culprits like phlox, bee balm or peonies—cut those back and discard those stems.

Click here to listen to Karla on our On The Scene Podcast

skins so you’re not advertising that you just planted a feast.

Of course, we still have neighbors and we don’t live in a vacuum—so if this approach of leaving fallen leaves in the garden beds would be too disruptive to your neighbors (or even to you! Not everyone can tolerate the look of wild messiness over the winter), then by all means, don’t do it.

But perhaps you can tolerate the look of the forest floor in your garden beds—because that’s what we are trying to simulate. The garden might resemble a woodland off the path of a hiking trail.

But generally, leaving the stems of perennials standing until spring will not harm anything so long as they are disease free, and it will protect the crowns of the plants.

So now we have saved you from raking out the garden beds and cutting back any perennials that are not diseased. You have time to go to the garden center and take advantage of those wonderful sales that they have this time of year!

Autumn is the best time to plant—it’s even better than spring—because the soil is already warm. Just be sure to water if we are not getting adequate rainfall (and that means at least an inch a week for perennials, more for trees and shrubs.)

You may want to add some bulbs as well. I know we have terrible critter problems here in town—you don’t have to tell me! My trail cam shows a parade of critters on my property. It’s a wonder I can grow anything!

But the way to grow bulbs successfully is to remember two things: first, bulbs have a distinct scent. We can’t smell them, but squirrels and chipmunks can. So sanitation is key. Clean up the bulb

After you plant, stamp down on the ground as hard as you can. Even if the squirrels and chipmunks don’t smell the bulbs, they know that it’s easier to dig where you just dug because you have nicely loosened the dirt for them. Don’t make it easy!

Since voles tunnel up from beneath, this is a different issue. You can plant the bulbs in little cages, or surround them with something sharp—some people suggest chicken grit, or aquarium gravel, or even kitty litter—just something that the little tunneling voles are not going to want to dig into! But it’s labor intensive. You might want to dig a “bulb trough,” where you line the whole bottom of an area that you dig out with sharp material, plant all your bulbs in one area, and then fill in with more gravel randomly as you backfill. Yes, you will only have bulbs in one area, but at least you will have bulbs!

So those are just a few thoughts on how to do a bit less work in the garden this fall—and then you can go out and enjoy everything that our lovely region has to offer!

Happy gardening!

MENS FASHION

CLOTHING IN NEW ENGLAND: From Sheep to Street Style

Ah, New England—if you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes! One minute you're basking in a warm autumn glow, and the next, you're bracing for a nor'easter that could blow your beanie right off your head. But while the weather may be unpredictable, one thing has always been certain: New England knows how to dress. And this mastery of layering didn’t happen overnight—it’s woven (pun intended) into the very fabric of our history. Let’s take a look at how New England’s rich textile past continues to influence our wardrobes today.

THE WOOLY BEGINNINGS: SHEEP, LOOMS, AND MILL GIRLS

Long before fast fashion, New England had slow sheep. Yes, sheep—those wooly wonders were the OG influencers of New England style. Back in the day (think early 1600s), our Puritan ancestors were all about practicality, and wool was their fabric of choice. It was warm, durable, and didn’t require importing fancy silks from Europe. Plus, who doesn’t love a sweater that feels like it’s giving you a warm hug?

By the 1800s, New England had become the epicenter of the textile industry, and the mills were booming. Places like Lowell, Massachusetts, and Manchester, New Hampshire, were the Silicon Valleys of their time—except, instead of tech geniuses, they had mill girls cranking out fabric. These women worked long hours spinning cotton and wool into textiles, and their hard work helped establish New England as the birthplace of American manufacturing. They also unknowingly set the stage for flannel to become a regional icon. Thanks, mill girls, we owe you one (or several).

FLANNEL: THE MVP OF NEW ENGLAND FASHION

You can’t talk about New England clothing without giving flannel its due respect. What was once the go-to for lumberjacks and grumpy grandpas has now become a wardrobe essential for everyone. Flannel is like the Swiss Army knife of fabrics— warm, comfortable, and perfectly suited for chopping wood or sipping a latte at your local coffee shop.

The reason we love flannel so much is that it embodies New England’s rugged yet cozy spirit. And thanks to the region’s

historic mills, some of the best flannel in the world still comes from these parts. Shout out to the woolen mills that keep us looking sharp (and toasty) every winter.

MODERN NEW ENGLAND FASHION: THE PAST MEETS THE PRESENT

While we New Englanders love our classic staples, that doesn’t mean we’re stuck in the past. Today’s New England style is a perfect blend of heritage and modern trends. Brands like LL Bean and Timberland (both hailing from the region) have taken traditional materials like leather and wool and given them a fresh, contemporary twist. Whether it’s a sleek pair of Bean Boots or a tailored wool coat, the region’s fashion is all about combining form and function.

And let’s not forget the rise of local, sustainable fashion brands. New England’s history as a textile hub has inspired a new generation of designers who are committed to ethical, ecofriendly fashion. The result? Clothes that not only look good but do good.

CONCLUSION: DRESSING THE PART IN NEW ENGLAND

So, whether you're bundling up for a snowy trek through the White Mountains or dressing in layers for a day in Boston, remember: New England style is about more than just looking good—it’s about surviving the elements with a little bit of flair. From the hardworking mill girls of the past to the trendsetting locals of today, our region has always known how to stay fashionable in the face of whatever Mother Nature throws at us.

And if all else fails, just throw on some flannel and call it a day.

Stay warm, New England!

Brio Westfarms: A Brunch Destination

If you’re on your way to Westfarms on a weekend morning, you now have a brunch option on Saturdays and Sundays to fortify your shopping experience! The popular restaurant has recently added their brunch menu to the lineup on Saturdays, (previously only on Sundays), offering a variety of flavorful dishes to fuel your day. Both outdoor and indoor dining is available beginning at 11 AM on the weekends.

While Brio has always been known for its upscale Italian dining, the new brunch menu adds delicious options with their traditional Tuscan flair.

The chefs have devised sunny egg scrambles by incorporating different combinations of Italian meats and Mediterranean veggies. All were flavorful and accompanied by small sautéed potatoes. Bistecco Alla Romano, a delicious twist on steak and eggs, was a big hit with our crowd. It consisted of well grilled tenderloins of beef topped with thick tomato slices encrusted in Romano cheese. Crowned with eggs and frosted with hollandaise sauce, it might remind you of the leaning Tower of Pisa.

The Very Berry French Toast was a sweet and indulgent treat! The dish was laden with strawberries and raspberries and had a luscious layer of cream cheese in between slices. It was served with very elongated, very thin strips of bacon, which my companions enjoyed after slathering with syrup!

A Children’s Menu is also available. While limited to three items, it seemed sufficient when talking with nearby diners with little ones. The portions were perfect for young diners and accompanied by fresh fruit.

Straying from the Brunch menu, we also enjoyed the Beef Carpaccio which was artfully presented in a pyramid shape. The entire lunch menu is also available during Brunch hours.

For those looking to enjoy a beverage with their meal, the restaurant features a variety of Italian-inspired cocktails, including Spritzers and Sangrias. Along with Italian style coffees, Brio serves well-crafted cocktails including a full range of Spritzers and Sangrias. The Peach Bellini almost brought me back to sitting in a little bistro in St. Mark’s Square in Venice.

Whether you're a regular at Brio or looking to try something new, the brunch menu is definitely worth checking out. So the next time you're heading to the mall on a weekend, make sure to stop by and enjoy a delicious meal at Brio Westfarms.

That’s it for now, we’ll be back in the next issue with another yummy review!
