YOM HAZIKARON ISRAEL MEMORIAL DAY

25 Kislev-2 Tevet December 11-18, 2020

A day to remember those who sacrificed their lives defending the state of Israel, as well as those who lost their lives as a result of terrorist attacks. The sound of a siren brings the entire nation to a two-minute standstill during which all traffic and activities come to a halt.

TU B’SHVAT

4 Iyar April 14, 2021

Biblical in origin, a holiday with environmentalist and Zionistic themes that celebrates spring-time renewal and growth. Traditions include eating fruit and planting trees.

YOM HA’ATZMAUT ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE DAY

15 Shevat January 28, 2021

On May 14, 1948 Israel was declared an independent state. Jews the world over celebrate with parades and festivals.

PURIM

5 Iyar April 15, 2021

A joyous celebration that commemorates the rescue of the Jews by Queen Esther of Persia and her righteous uncle, Mordechai, from the evil Haman. The Book of Esther is read. Traditions include costume parties, mishloach manot (gift-giving), and eating hamentashen. Some also fast on the day before Purim to remember the fast by the Jews of Persia at Esther’s request.

LAG B’OMER

The Ten Days of Repentance begins on Rosh Hashanah and culminates on Yom Kippur.

1-2 Tishrei September 7-8, 2021

YOM KIPPUR Holiest day of the Jewish year. Through fasting and prayer, Jews reflect upon their relationships with God and other people and atone for their sins. The fast ends with the blast of the shofar.

SUKKOT

28 Iyar May 10, 2021

A day that celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem during the Six Day War.

SHAVUOT Commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Israelites at Mount Sinai, as well as the spring harvest. The Ten Commandments and the Book of Ruth are read. It is traditional to eat dairy products.

Commemorates the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring the Israelites to the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering. Many build a sukkah, a temporary structure modeled after the huts constructed in the desert. Also celebrated with the blessing of the lulav and etrog.

15-21 Tishrei September 21-27, 2021

SHEMINI ATZERET

6-7 Sivan May 17-18, 2021

Celebrated the day after Sukkot and thus sometimes considered an extension of the holiday. Marks the first time tefillat geshem (prayer for rain) is recited during services, a practice that continues until Pesach.

FAST OF TAMMUZ

22 Tishrei September 28, 2021

Day chosen by the Israeli Knesset in 1951 to mourn the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. Often commemorated with the reading of names and testimonials by survivors. In Israel, the blast of a siren signals a collective minute of silence in memory of those lost.

Fast from dawn until dusk commemorating the day Moses broke the first Tablets of the Covenant because the Israelites made the Golden Calf. It also marks the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem which culminated in the city’s destruction. The mourning period known as “The Three Weeks” begins, ending with Tisha B’Av.

14 Adar February 26, 2021

Celebrates the liberation of the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. At the seder, the Haggadah is read and symbolic foods are eaten. Jews refrain from eating leavened products and eat matzah for eight days to remember how the Israelites hadn’t the time to let their bread rise before fleeing.

TISHA B’AV

SIMCHAT TORAH Celebrates the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle. After finishing the last sentence of the chapter of Devarim (Deuteronomy), adults and children joyously parade the Torah around the synagogue seven times. M

iriam Schreiber was just six years old when World War II began. When the Nazis invaded, she and her family made their way from their small village of Długosiodło in Poland to Russia seeking safety. Several of Schreiber’s childhood years were spent in a Siberian work camp, where her older relatives were forced into hard labor, and suffered from freezing cold temperatures and malnutrition. Not freed until a year after the war ended, Schreiber and her family made their way to a displaced persons camp in Germany, then finally, to the United States. After more than 50 years in West Hartford, where Schreiber, who is now 88, and her late husband Saul raised their two sons, the great-grandmother of three still has one big regret – that she was never able to go to school and did not receive a high school diploma. Schreiber finally got that kavod on Sunday, Aug. 16 when the New England J ewish Academy (NEJA) presented her with her very own honorary high school diploma. A small crowd of family and friends – masks on and socially distanced – gathered for an outdoor ceremony at the West Hartford school to witness NEJA graduate Shoshana Olkin present Schreiber with her honorary diploma on Sunday, August 9.

Don’t spend another winter alone.

Come meet new friends while being well taken care of and staying safe.
