Itchy Skin? It could be house dust allergy Up to 80% of allergic dogs have an allergy to dust. Symptoms include red, itchy skin and scratching that can lead to secondary skin infections. Although insecticidal environmental sprays can help kill dust mites, proteins in the dust mite faeces and on the bodies of the mites can still cause an allergic reaction in sensitive pets. Allergone Spray is a unique environmental spray that coats dust particles that include the mites and their faeces. By doing so it alters the chemical structure and helps inactivate and neutralise allergens found in house dust, helping to reduce the symptoms of house dust allergy.

To find out more about Allergone and other products that help manage the symptoms of allergy go to www.nextmune.com

The innovative microcapsule technology helps bind the dust particles together into larger particles that don’t float in the air, making it easier to remove them when cleaning. Westies & Besties - May 2022

We had so much fun looking at all the fantastic Dirty Dawg photographs this month. It proved far too difficult to choose just one winner, so we decided to have several winners for this competition instead! If the word, Winner, is underneath your photograph, please email us your postal address and we’ll send out your prize. You’ll also notice that we’ve tried to keep any information about you and your Westie to a minimum so that we don’t risk highlighting important details to any potential thieves.

Publisher – Westies & Besties Ltd Fidlas Road | Cardiff | CF14 5LZ

For those of you that don’t know, the Dirty Dawg competition came about because one of our readers, Jackie Rodgers, asked us why we always use photographs of very clean Westies. We thought this was a really good point (our Westie, Buffy is usually caked in mud!) …so, for this month only, you’ll find this edition contains mainly your Dirty Dawgs! Thanks Jackie!

Ukraine Donations Reach £228,000 Thanks to The Kennel Club Charitable Trust AROUND £130,000 HAS ALEADY BEEN SENT TO HELP DOG OWNERS AND THEIR PETS

I

n response to the tragedy in Ukraine, at the start of March, The Kennel Club Charitable Trust and The Kennel Club launched a fundraising campaign to support dogs and their owners affected by the conflict. Bolstered by two £25,000 donations, one from The Kennel Club and one from The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, the campaign went from strength to strength and had raised an amazing £120,000 by the end of Crufts on 13 March. Since then, gifts have continued to flood in from dog lovers around the UK. From breed clubs and dog shows to dog grooming salons, schools, community groups and dog loving individuals wanting to help, there has been a huge upswell of support. Amazing support has also been given by the Championship Dog Shows, Dog Show Committees and Societies who between them have donated over £15,000 to the appeal. The campaign received a further boost last week with a phenomenal gift of $100,000 (approximately £76,000), from renowned philanthropists and long-term supporters of the Trust, Vernon and Shirley Hill. Mr Hill said: “As dog owners ourselves, to our beloved Yorkshire Terrier,

This amazing act of generosity means the total raised for the Trust’s Appeal for Ukraine now stands at an incredible £228,000, £130,000 of which has already been sent to Ukraine and is being used to make a difference on the ground immediately. Buoyed by the level of support to date, The Kennel Club Charitable Trust is now pushing to reach the £250,000 milestone

and hopes that the dog loving public and will continue to get behind the campaign. “We are overwhelmed with the support so far,” says, Trustee, Rose Smart. “Vernon and Shirley’s gift is the epitome of philanthropy, and along with the thousands of other donations we have received, collectively, we will make a real difference to dogs and their owners affected by the conflict in Ukraine.”

Sir Duffield, we are heartbroken to see the terrible pictures of dogs and their owners escaping the terrors in Ukraine - pictures that show that amid the worst times, the love and loyalty people feel for their pets, endures. We want to make a difference and try to support dogs and their owners at this difficult time, and we encourage others to join us.”

The Trust is encouraging any individual or organisation who wants to support the Appeal for Ukraine to get involved and do what they can. Further information can be found on the Trust’s website: www.kennelclubcharitabletrust.org along with details on how to make a gift.

Vets Solve Puppy’s Ingestion Problem SPECIALISTS MOVE FAST TO SAVE HIS LIFE

T

hree departments at Davies Veterinary Specialists (Davies) in Hertfordshire, demonstrated multi-disciplinary efficiency with an emergency foreign body ingestion case last month. Within two hours the poorly puppy had been admitted, diagnosed, operated on, and recovered from surgery. Teddy, a 10-month-old miniature Australian labradoodle puppy with a penchant for scavenging had been vomiting and lethargic for four days. His local practice suspected foreign material was present which prompted emergency referral to Linnaeus-owned Davies Veterinary Specialists.

“I knew Teddy was deteriorating by the hour and had voiced my fears that if we didn’t get specialist help, he wasn’t going to make it,” said Teddy’s owner Gemma Geddes. “I’ll be forever grateful I pushed for Davies’s help. Within five minutes of arriving, I knew he was in competent and safe hands when they confirmed they’d already established where the blockage was and were preparing him for surgery. “Davies were professional, caring, communicative and allowed my husband and I to ask a multitude of questions without ever feeling we were taking up their time. Most importantly I never felt like Teddy was just a ‘patient’ to them, they understood how important he was to us.”

Teddy was admitted by the on-call Soft Tissue Surgeon. The radiologist identified a foreign body in the small intestine. The anaesthetists were able to simultaneously stabilise Teddy and prepare him for surgery. The surgical team then got to work to remove the culprit and check for any damage or infection. “The longer a foreign body remains lodged in the intestines, the greater the risk of fatal consequences such as septic peritonitis,” explained said Rufus Hammerton, Resident in Surgery at Davies. “As a multi-disciplinary practice, we were able to manage the case very quickly and efficiently. Smooth teamwork between the departments meant we could effectively treat Teddy and avoid potentially fatal consequences.”

I knew Teddy was deteriorating by the hour

Teddy recovered well and was discharged two days later. He is now back to being a normal, happy bouncy labradoodle puppy.

How to Find the Right Practitioner for your Westie RAMP IS A REGULATORY BODY FOR OSTEOPATHIC, PHYSIOTHERAPY, AND CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSIONALS WORKING WITH ANIMALS

hen it comes to finding the correct professional to help take care of your dog’s health, many dog owners are nervous because they aren’t sure where to turn. Finding a highly qualified practitioner that has experience and knowledge can be quite a daunting task and it’s essential that you find registered professionals that you can trust. As mentioned previously, I sit on the council for the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP). What can you expect from RAMP? RAMP is a regulatory body for osteopathic, physiotherapy, and chiropractic practitioners all working with animals. RAMP is primarily tasked with protecting the general public/owners and their animals/pets. As with any regulatory body, they will investigate any complaints fully and remove practitioners from the register if deemed appropriate. RAMP sets a minimum educational standard, (degree level or higher) and professional standards that must be met by all practitioners

10

and maintained in order to be on the register. The register is a comprehensive list of practitioners where you can search for someone in your area, it is made public and can be viewed on the website, www.rampregister.org Expectations Any RAMP registrant must keep up with their continual professional development and must possess the appropriate indemnity insurance which is set to a level recommended by RAMP. This is checked upon registration and renewal of membership each year. It is the belief of RAMP that all animals should have access to musculoskeletal care and that animals deserve the same level of care as humans. RAMP have been working with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and is permitted to use the following statement: “Constructive discussions with DEFRA about how we work within the current legislative framework

With that in mind, all practitioners should always communicate with yourself and your veterinarian and always work within the legal framework (the Veterinary Surgeon’s Act) by seeking consent to treat an animal unless for competition (a general loosening treatment in order to compete at a better level) or maintenance (pre-diagnosed arthritis/old age) care for a healthy animal. Simply Sardines THIS SMALL OILY FISH HAS NUMEROUS HEALTH BENEFITS FOR YOUR WESTIE

BY SUE MAKEPEACE

T

his little silvery fish packs a big punch in the nutrition stakes. They might look a bit ugly and have a strong not-so-welcome smell, but they are absolutely packed full of yummy goodness. For instance, the high Omega 3 content helps with inflammation, and this little smelly oily fish is an excellent source for your Westie. So if you are looking to add an omega 3 to your Westie’s diet, then the simple sardine is a far superior source than an oil or a capsule. This tiny fish is the whole package when it comes to beneficial goodness that you can add to your Westie’s food. They are dense in Protein and Minerals, such as iron, phosphorus, calcium, potassium and magnesium, Taurine, Vitamins D, B6, B3, B12, Co-enzyme Q10, Trace minerals including zinc, manganese, iodine, copper and selenium. Feeding sardines regularly may help to fight cancer and heart disease, including cardiovascular function.

Sardines also contain EPA and DHA which is linked to improving mood. Research has also shown that sardines may help in preventing allergy symptoms. They can also help reduce inflammation of the skin. Sardines can be fed with a raw diet to help balance the fats in chicken (chicken is high in omega 6), they can be fed with a home cooked diet, or even as a topper on processed food. Sardines can also be used to entice fussy eaters to eat, or as a snack. Sardines are a cheap way to add so many beneficial things to your Westie’s diet. You can feed them raw, (just remember they need to be frozen for around three weeks to kill any potential parasites), or canned, (you can buy sardines in oil or spring water) or even use them to make treats. Littermate Syndrome NOT ALL SIBLINGS GET ALONG WRITES JUSTINE SHONE

L

ittermate syndrome occurs when two puppies from the same litter living together develop such a strong attachment to each other that it interferes with their ability to interact in a normal manner with people, other dogs, or any situation where they are not together.

inter-dog aggression, especially among the same sex siblings. Fighting can become severe and even dangerous as they reach maturity. Because many sibling pups are only socialised with each other, they may also develop aggression or fear towards other dogs.

It is important people know about this information and are informed before deciding to get two puppies from the same litter. In some cases, this can work out perfectly fine. The idea of adopting littermate puppies can seem an adorable and fun idea. They will play with each other; keep each other company and they are guaranteed to get along and make life easier. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and you should think twice about adopting littermate puppies.

The signs of littermate syndrome This can include excessive crying, whining, and destructive behaviour when siblings are separated from each other, as well as lack of interest in playing or interacting with other people or pets in the household, fear of unfamiliar people, places, or noises. Puppies may avoid interactions with new people, become very still and quiet when people approach them, bark, growl, and snap when presented with new situations. They may have high anxiety when separated from the other puppy, the siblings may whine, bark, pace, pant, or exhibit destructive behaviour when they are separated from their littermate. They may have the unwillingness to eat alone. Puppies experiencing littermate syndrome may only want to eat if their siblings are present. You may find it difficult with your basic training with two puppies from the same litter and this could take longer than expected because puppies are so distracted by one another.

Littermate syndrome can affect dogs of any breed and it may also affect unrelated puppies who are adopted at the same time and raised together. Training and socialising and caring for two young puppies can be more difficult than one can imagine. Littermate puppies can quickly become attached and unable to cope without the presence of the other puppy. Often one pup suffers from this more than the other puppy. If this happens, you will see frantic, panicked, fearful, or even aggressive behaviour when the pups are separated. Littermate syndrome may even cause

Most commonly puppies can develop separation anxiety due to hyper attachment because puppies with littermate syndrome dominate each other’s attention.

with littermate syndrome dominate each other’s attention. Your puppies may fail to learn how to communicate, play and socialise with other dogs. Over time this can result in fear and aggression when exposed to other dogs. Gradually separate your pups, use separate crates, slowly spaced farther apart until they are no longer in site, feed them in separate rooms, take them outside at different times and practice your training separately. Socialise them each with other dogs, also take them for separate play sessions with other pups, as your puppies adjust to their new normal, use treats and praise for staying calm when they are apart from each other.

If you are considering adopting two puppies at the same time it is important to consider the challenges that may come along with this decision, so that you can devote the time and energy to positive reinforcement training. Remember that both puppies are individuals, they have unique personalities, they may be motivated differently, and may have different energy levels and characters. Bond with your puppies individually so they can focus on you and you solely without your puppies just relying on each other. The easiest way to prevent littermate syndrome in puppies is not to adopt two puppies at the same time. Justine Shone is a dog behaviourist and can be found at JP Holistic Nutrition www.jpholististicnutrition.com

It is also important for your littermate puppies to spend some supervised time together. Although you should maintain separate training, play sessions, and walks with your puppies. You will also want to take some time for them to play together to help your puppies to bond nicely for their future well-being.

Turbo-Charge Your Westie’s Recall PRACTICE EQUALS IMPROVEMENT IN A DOG’S BEHAVIOUR

Above:Jarvis Clothier

BY JARVIS CLOTHIER

W

est Highland White Terriers are one of the loveliest breeds in the world. If you ever meet a fellow Westie owner there is an instant connection. You know you have met a friend. Everyone who adores these characterful little dogs will know the joy they bring to our lives every single day. I for one, am no stranger to the unparalleled love of a West Highland White Terrier. My Westie Experience Although I am now a Border Collie fanatic my last dog was a Westie. His name was Pablo (affectionately known as “Doggy” in his golden years). He came to me at the age of two from Lord Whisky Animal Sanctuary in Kent after being abandoned in an empty house. Thankfully the RSPCA, (with help from the Kent Police) were able to rescue him and find a forever home who would truly cherish him. And my goodness - he was so loved. That little dog arrived at my door completely untrained. A total scoundrel with energy in droves. He had no concept of living with people or dogs - recall was the least of our problems. Life was nothing short of chaos. He was my biggest

38

project. Those first few months saw him go from delinquent teenager to the most charming dog I have ever known. As I always tell my clients, consistent training is a magical journey. We chipped away at behaviours every day until that little dog flourished. I believe that given the chance, all dogs can be fantastic at obedience. Dear little Doggy became the greatest asset to my dog training career and life. He assisted hundreds of puppies in learning how to be calm and develop splendid recall right until Covid-19 saw us face an unprecedented time in all our lives, a global lockdown. Doggy was our primary comfort in times of uncertainty, just as the thousands of dogs across the world brought their owners inner peace as the shape of or lives changed forever. For many, this meant puppy training hit a brick wall and recall went out of the window. Since then, I have supported hundreds of puppy owners achieve the obedience training they needed, to allow dogs to live freely. These are some of my best training secrets to help you get there too.

The design and type of your dog’s harness, leads, or collar, can also greatly impact your success in training

39

B E H AV I O U R

Recall Training 101 1. Choose a specific command for recall Dogs need a specific cue to recall successfully, their name alone won’t cut it. A command provides the dog with context. For example, we would call “Pablo, come!” And ensure the dog could see the food in our hands.

Play is a fantastic way to build your relationship, but furry tug toys allow your dog to fully exercise their hunting capabilities in an appropriate setting. It is often the highest value reward available.

As soon as your dog returns, lure them in close to your feet and immediately give them the food or toy you have ready for them.

With a tug toy in your hand, you will find they can hardly keep their eyes off you during walks! This focus is ideal for training consistently.

This is how the dog learns to come back to you and enjoy the process. The faster they return, the bigger the handful of food should be. Most dogs cotton onto that trick double-quick.

3. Tools matter The design and type of your dog’s harness, leads or collar can also greatly impact your success in training.

Start at home in your house or garden before progressing to a low-distraction environment. Dogs need gradual steppingstones to reach your goal of perfect recall.

I have always been completely against extendable leads, even with small dogs. There are hundreds of reasons behind it (I’ll spare you the horror stories of garrotting innocent bystanders). Ultimately, they damage training progress for most people.

Always remember to “release” your dog from your request with a phrase such as “go sniff” when you are happy for them to walk off again. This verbal marker allows them to fully understand the beginning and end of recall. 2. Motivate your dog This brings us onto the most important part of dog training. What is your dog’s reward? It needs to be something really special that only comes “out” during recall practice. Everyone likes to get paid for good work and dogs are no different. Dogs must consistently receive a reward for coming back to your feet. Every single time. Always leave the house with some kind of incentive to help them understand you will give them heaven in exchange for recall. Be “treat heavy” on your walks (reward them every few steps) and you will see a huge difference in your dog’s attention span. Fading out rewards should not be on your agenda at this stage. If you’re struggling with a fussy eater, try engaging prey drive with a toy that will keep their eyes on

40

the prize. At Jarvis Dog Whisperer - Boarding and Training we are very keen on utilising rabbit or faux fur tug toys. Terriers in particular love to “catch” and shake them.

Extendable leads encourage the wrong type of rapport during dog walks (one where the owner does not trust the dog and the dog has made an association that they don’t have to listen anymore). They know they are on lead and will be aware of the sheer panic you feel should that cord fail. This is not a healthy walking relationship. Instead, I much prefer a long line - walking my dogs as if they were a horse lunging in a sand school. The long line provides slack (the weightless feeling of being off lead) and allows for the dog to roam and sniff whist also being called back successfully. They are fantastic “seat belts” in an emergency should the dog try to tear off towards a distraction. It takes one or two walks to master holding the slack and reeling it in, but when you can work a dog on a long line their recall can make great leaps and bounds towards a bombproof return. 4. Practice makes improvement It’s easy to become impatient with recall. However, if your dog has spent time ignoring your calls, they will need time to undo that training error.

Westies & Besties - May 2022

That’s a big ask of any dog and falls into the category of advanced training.

B E H AV I O U R

Most dogs need thousands of “dress rehearsals” in different places before being set free in public spaces. Before coming off the long line, all dogs should be 100% reliable around all distractions. It’s our responsibility to ensure our dogs will not invade the space of people or dogs who do not consent to their approach.

Recall can also feel more challenging if your dog is between six and 18 months of age. Hormones, prey drive, fear phases, scenting ability, and new places can all impact your dog’s ability to process recall. If your dog is relapsing in recall, remember that they need time to practice. Stay consistent and ride the wave of learning as a team. Your recall will improve in no time.

Caring for Canines

GILLIAN THOMAS-JONES EXPLAINS THE ETHOS BEHIND HER RANGE OF NATURAL PET PRODUCTS

When did you start your business and what inspired you to launch it? Mountain Garden Botanics started in September 2020. As a keen gardener and wildlife enthusiast we had not long moved to a plot of land on Esclusham Mountain in Wrexham, North Wales. The first Spring we quickly learnt that the midges and other biting insects were more intense and evening gardening or even just enjoying the sunsets were a challenge. I remember one weekend literally pouring fly repellent on me used within the equestrian trade, but they were back within five minutes. I purchased a jungle formula shampoo; however, the scent wasn’t fantastic, and I knew with my botanical knowledge and research I could make something myself. This was the first product I developed, a human shampoo bar, Lavender, Lemongrass with Neem Oil. My hair took a few weeks to transition and get use to the cold process shampoo bar method however I had amazing results not only with being bitten less but other benefits such as quicker hair growth and lighter in colour. Tell us about your range of natural pet products. How did this come about? Being an animal lover, it was only a matter of time until I worked on a pet range. I have always had pets in my life, to me they are one of the biggest pleasures you can have in life, a

bond that can’t be broken. I developed six Pet Shampoo Bars based on the human range but adapted them to be pet friendly. I handmake in small batches all the bars using an artisan process with our own recipe. As we use this process and not a melt and pour base, we have a finished bar with over 58% conditioning oils meaning there is no need for a separate conditioner. Our shampoo bars have the same signature base recipe but are adapted for the needs of the pet. We only use pet-friendly pure essential oils and use other hair and skin superfoods such as nettles, calendula and argan oil. Argan oil is an expensive oil, but we think pets deserve the best and we do not shy away from this in the quality of the ingredients. To complement our shampoo bars, we also developed three deodorising mists. These condition the coat while leaving a refreshing scent between bath times. Our most popular scent is Jasmine, but our personal favourite is Forest Walk as this reminds us of our favourite walks with our girl Misty (Misty is our 14-yearold Weimaraner). Working within the pet industry for several years before starting my own business I could see the pet market had many spritzes or colognes which are synthetic using overpowering fragrance oils. We developed this range to be gentle for canine noses.

I have always had pets in my life, to me they are one of the biggest pleasures you can have in life, a bond that can’t be broken

Q & A

I have always had a huge passion for animals, and I really do think that they deserve the best as they are not given a choice, it is us that decides for them.

Our paw and nose range are packed with superfoods and nourishing oils. For crusty noses, cracked paws and protection against the elements we have our hemp or calendula balms. These balms are also perfect for minor scrapes and soothing bug bites. I often use this on my own hands before bed to rehydrate my skin after a busy day. Our Paw and Wrinkle Balm isn’t just for the wrinkly dog breeds. This balm is an easy way to remove built-up grime gently. Weimaraners and spaniels have big ears, and this wipes away the dirt on the outer ear skin. This is also good for paws at this time of year with Spring grass mites as it has neem oil in it. Our Aloe Vera Paw Relief is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory spray for paws to keep them clean with the botanical benefits. Pet bedding is becoming more and more less washing machine friendly which is why we created a natural pet bedding mist to deodorise and calm before bedtime. This can be used on your own bedding if you are like me and share your bed with your pet. I have slept on a mattress downstairs for the last 18 months as my old girl can no longer do the stairs, yes, I am a crazy pet mum. Our natural calming mist using lavender and chamomile essential oils and CPD free hemp can be used on your pet’s skin or within your home and car. One of our top tips is to spray your leg on which side your dog walks while out of the house too to help with walking anxieties.

44

How important do you think it is that dog owners are educated on the products they buy their pets? This is a huge factor for me as my Misty has many skin and food allergies. I understand firsthand what it is like to see your pet have a skin reaction to the extent a steroid injection has been the only option. We list our ingredients making it easy for owners to see what they are using on their pet’s skin along with any allergies within the essential oils used. It is also about the consumers eco choices. For example, we are proud to be a 100% palm oil-free company but many beauty and food products on the market contain palm oil, however, this is listed as another ingredient as it is a by-product. Can people order your pet products online? Yes, we are available through a number of pet specialist online retailers and shops. You can also buy our full range along with the human and natural home range on our website www. mountaingardenbotanics.co.uk What makes your pet products different to your competitors? I have always had a huge passion for animals, and I really do think that they deserve the best as they are not given a choice, it is us that decides for them. I source all my raw ingredients responsibly and only work with cruelty-free suppliers. I use quality superfoods within my range that would typically only be used within the human category due to costs. I use recycled packaging and packaging that can be curb recycled easily or upcycled within the home. Our jars and bottles are made from tough glass and aluminium. We do not use any fragrance oils within our range as these are synthetic and can be overpowering compared to pure essential oils. All products are handmade in small batches ensuring the highest quality and artisan craft. Are there any specific products you would recommend for Westies given that they are hypoallergenic breed and can sometimes be prone to allergies? For the perfect Westie pamper we would recommend our Lavender, Chamomile and Calendula Pet Shampoo Bar with our Lavender & Chamomile Deodorising Mist. For the go to cupboard have our calendula paw and nose balm for skin flare ups and our Aloe Vera Paw Relief to keep the paws clean through the year.

Shampoo bars are so eco-friendly as they last twice as long as a bottle of shampoo. They are easy to travel with for petcations. As we use natural oils to create the bubbly lather in our pet shampoo, this also rinses out really easily compared to a liquid shampoo that perhaps would use a foaming agent or surfactants. Coconut is the number one ingredient in our shampoo bars.

About Gillian Gillian is from Wrexham, North Wales, and lives with her husband Siôn and her pet family. Gillian has a 14-year-old Weimaraner called Misty and rescue cats Merlin and Norbert, as well as rescue bunnies Bobtail, Cotton Tail and Seren (who live in a 40ft x 9ft enclosure as she doesn’t believe in cages). Her bunnies are eight years old, and Gillian also has six ex-battery hens and one rescue cockerel.

Q & A

Will you expand on your pet product range in the future? Yes, for sure! We have an activated charcoal shampoo bar launching shortly along with other natural grooming products. If you would like to sign up for our newsletter you can do this via our website.

Good Night’s Sleep

NOT HAVING ENOUGH REST CAN HAVE A DAMAGING EFFECT ON HEALTH AND WELLING SAYS LOUISA ALESSANDRA PINI

A

good night’s sleep is not just great for beautiful skin; it’s a foundation for good physical, mental and emotional health.

Living in a world that’s switched on 24-7, always connected, on demand, you may find it hard to switch off. Noisy neighbours, barking dogs, hormones, snoring and so many other factors can also get in the way.

their brain activity after one normal night of sleep compared with 24 hours of deprived sleep. After each session brain reactivity was monitored whilst the participants were shown an emotionally evocative film. Those who were sleep deprived had more activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain that deals with fear and anxiety and they had less activity in the medial frontal cortices, which help control emotional reactions.

On top of this, the ongoing uncertainty and troubling world news that’s being broadcast daily just adds to the list of things to keep us awake at night! Why sleep is so important Sleep is vital for good health and wellbeing. This is simply because during sleep your body is regenerating and replenishing itself. Your heart and blood vessels are literally being repaired and your skin cells are renewing themselves. In a nutshell, sleep helps to boost your immune system and allows your body to heal itself. Sleep and anxiety A recent study by the University of California at Berkeley revealed how just one night of sleep deprivation triggered a 30% increase in anxiety. They took 18 young, healthy adults and measured

If you have felt particularly emotional after a bad night’s sleep this explains why. A good night’s sleep lowers our anxiety and helps balance our emotional reactions. Uninterrupted Zzzzzzzzz In case you were wondering a good night’s sleep is usually between six and a half and eight hours... and is uninterrupted. The good news is that there are many things you can do that will help you, even if you are in circumstances beyond your control, to notably improve the quality of your sleep. For example, if you are a carer for someone who wakes a lot in the night, use some of these strategies to help you make the most of the sleep you are getting.

Make your bedroom a warm and cosy place, somewhere you go to retreat, to relax and unwind. That means no screens or phones. If you have do have a television in your bedroom cover it with a beautiful material before bedtime. If you need some inspiration look up the Danish tradition of ‘hygge’. Think snuggle, pillows, soft textures.

2

Get into a routine of going to bed at the same time every night and try to wake up at roughly the same time, even at weekends

3

Use some soothing essential oils like Lavender or Frankincense to help you relax or invest in a bedtime pillow mist containing relaxing oils to get you into a calm mood and to unwind before getting into bed.

4

Avoid caffeine four to six hours before bedtime. If your sleep is particularly poor I would recommend to gradually reduce your intake and eventually cut out caffeine from your diet altogether

5

Limit alcohol and heavy meals just before sleep as this can all of a sudden wake you up later on in the night due to increased blood sugar levels

6

Turn off the tv before you go to bed & read a book instead. Research shows that eye movements from watching television has a stimulating effect whereas the eye movements during reading are more conducive to sleep

7

Exercise regularly as this is excellent at reducing effects of stress hormones and boosts circulation & blood flow to your skin and body as a whole, but not in the evening close to when you are going to sleep because the adrenaline will keep you awake!

8

Increase your comfort. Have really comfortable nightwear, pillows and bed linen. Make the experience of sleeping as inviting as possible

9

Interruptions If your Westie wakes you up earlier than you like, value your sleep and keep them out of your bedroom during sleeping hours. You have plenty of other hours in the day to show them how much you care, and a good night’s sleep equals a better mood and more quality time with your dog.

Try massage. I see a lot of clients who have suffered with sleep issues and often a good aromatherapy massage later on in the day or in the early evening is wonderful at promoting a good night’s sleep. It is also helpful in breaking the cycle of not sleeping. Alternatively pop a drop of lavender oil into the palms of your hands and give yourself a 5-minute foot massage half an hour before bed. Foot massage is very grounding and soothing for the whole nervous system.

Spend 3 minutes becoming aware of what sleep means to you. Does it mean stress? Mind chatter? Interruptions? Or perhaps escapism? My only alone time? End of the day? Exhaustion? Try and listen out for your negative mind chatter that could be perpetuating a poor night’s sleep. Acknowledge it, explore it and replace it with a positive word or phrase. For example: “Sleep for me means rejuvenation, repair, peace and tranquillity”. Louisa is a Holistic & Clinical Aromatherapist and is the creator of the Just Be Natural Collection

Lavender oil is one of the best essential oils for insomnia because it is soporific, which means it induces sleep.

WE ALL LOVE OUR WESTIES BUT DO YOU KNOW THE SIGNALS THAT THEY LOVE YOU BACK?

2

50

ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING If your pooch keeps rolling on his/her back for a belly rub or tends to sleep on his back with his paws up in the air then it’s odds on that your Westie feels relaxed, content, and trusts you with his/her life KISS ME Our Westie actually kisses us when we say, ‘kissy’, but if your dog suddenly gives you a lick after taking him for a walk or after having his dinner/play time then it’s fair to assume he’s saying thank you!

FOLLOW THE LEADER Every Westie owner knows who the real boss is (it’s not us humans!) but if your canine companion follows you absolutely everywhere it could be because your furry friend wants to spend every minute of every day with the person he loves most – YOU!

IT’S CHRISTMAS EVERY DAY Do you keep receiving unexpected gifts? Whether it’s dug-up flowers from your lovely garden, the poor local sparrow, or the little mouse that dared to tread on your Westie’s turf, little gifts from your Westie all add up to displays of affection

DOES YOUR WESTIE STARE INTO YOUR EYES? If you’re at home relaxing with your Westie and your pup starts staring into your eyes lovingly you can happily stare back as this is said to create an even bigger bond between you and your best pal (this is different to staring if your dog is angry, however!)
