EDITOR’S NOTE
FIT FOR A KING I’m sure many of you will be watching and enjoying the Coronation of His Majesty the King, King Charles III, this month, and it got me thinking about how we treat our Westies. They rule our little palaces, they demand our attention (and their walkies), and they have us all jumping to attention at the first sign that they are about to be sick – how many times have you leapt out of bed because your bestie is making a strange but all too familiar noise? This edition is all about doing things better to help our Besties live the longest and happiest life possible.

The London show will take a break in 2023 due to the pandemic, cost-of-living crisis
T
he Kennel Club has announced that the London Discover Dogs event will not be taking place in 2023. It will take a break for a year, with the aim of bringing it back with a refreshed and reinvigorated new look in 2024. Discover Dogs has been a feature at Crufts since 1991 and will continue to be so. In 1996 it was brought to London as an additional event in its own right. The event grew in numbers and popularity over the years and moved location from Earls Court to London ExCel in 2015. In more recent times however, numbers attending the London event have declined and regrettably it sustained a significant financial shortfall in 2022. Both at Crufts and in its standalone format Discover Dogs is very much seen as an important information tool for The Kennel Club – helping to educate prospective dog owners to find the right breed for them and also promoting responsible dog ownership and dog health, as well as showcasing pedigree dogs. Mark Beazley, Chief Executive at The Kennel Club, commented: “It has been a tough decision to

rest Discover Dogs in London for 2023, however, the pandemic and cost of living crisis has meant the event has suffered significant financial loss in recent years and it is therefore important for The Kennel Club to take the opportunity to look at the event and its objectives to see if there is a better way to meet these in the current financial climate. “As always, we are indebted to the breed clubs that have supported the event with their enthusiasm and very much look forward to ensuring that Discover Dogs at Crufts continues as a showcase for the many benefits owning a pedigree dog brings. Visitor feedback consistently demonstrates that meeting the many different breeds of dogs and talking to experts is the main reason to visit the show. It goes without saying that we will be talking to the breed clubs and volunteers, who are central to the event, very soon regarding plans for the event going forward to gauge their views.” The Kennel Club is delighted that all agility competitions – including the Crufts Medium ABC semifinal, Crufts Large Novice ABC semi-final, Crufts Intermediate Novice ABC semi-final, as well Westies & Besties - May 2023
as The Kennel Club Starters Cup and Discover Dogs Small/ Mixi Pairs final – which have been previously held at Discover Dogs, will be held at The London International Horse Show in December 2023. This event already hosts The Kennel Club Agility Stakes finals. Simon Brooks-Ward, Show Director of The London International Horse Show said: “The Kennel Club Dog Agility has been a part of London International Horse Show for many years, and we are delighted to be able to welcome the additional agility classes to our programme. In 2023 the London International Horse Show is expanding its activity and the agility classes will be taking place in the new London Arena. Dog Agility is a firm favourite for our 70,000 plus audience and I know that this will only add to their enjoyment of visiting the preChristmas show.” Further announcements on The Kennel Club Junior Warrant semifinal, National Junior Handler final and Scruffts heat that normally take place at Discover Dogs will be made in due course and news about Discover Dogs 2024 will be released later this year.

You Eat…... And So Is your
PDSA Nurse on signs your dog can afford to lose a few pounds
P
DSA Vet Nurse, Shauna Walsh, shares expert insight into some of the UK’s popular dog breeds and how to know if your four-legged friend is carrying extra weight around the edges.
“It sounds obvious, but dogs who eat too much and don’t exercise enough, get fat! If you feed your dog a lot of treats as well as their normal food, most of the extra calories will turn into excess inches.” “It can be easy to dismiss any extra weight on your dog, especially if their fluffy coat hides the excess pounds! With images of plump pooches - tubby terriers or rotund retrievers being increasingly showcased and viewed as ‘normal’, it can be difficult to know what a healthy shape is for your dog.”
Dogs come in all different builds and sizes depending on their breed-type, but a healthy shape is the same for every dog. Your dog’s body shape will help to give you an idea of whether they’re carrying too much weight. The veterinary term for this is ‘Body Condition Scoring’ (BCS), and it is simple and easy to do at home with your canine companion: • Run your hands along your dog’s sides. The skin should move freely over the ribs, which you should be able to feel with a light touch. • Run your hands along your dog’s back. You should be able to feel the spine and hipbones under the skin without being able to see them they shouldn’t be sticking out. • Gently feel the base of your dog’s tail, there shouldn’t be a build-up of fat where the tail joins the spine. • Feel under your dog’s tummy, it should go in, not bulge out. • Look at your dog from the side and from above. You should be able to see a waist. If not, your dog may be overweight.

Knowing your pet’s body condition score helps you to know if they need to lose some pounds, but it’s also important to know your pet’s current weight – use both together to work out what their ideal weight should be. Weighing them regularly means you can quickly spot any changes, and then tweak their diet and exercise to correct it. You can visit your vet to weigh larger dogs, and small dogs can also be weighed at home quite easily using bathroom scales. Maintaining a healthy weight is down to feeding the right amounts of a balanced diet, as well as appropriate levels of exercise. Shauna advises: “All dogs need daily exercise, but how much they need depends on lots of factors, including their age, breed, fitness level and any health conditions they may have. Every dog is an individual, so it is very important to consider your dog’s specific needs when exercising them – young dogs won’t need as much exercise as they grow, and that may be the same for some senior dogs, who could benefit from resting their aging paws! For dogs with health concerns, the levels of exercise they need will be best discussed with your vet and adjusted appropriately. “Unless your vet advises otherwise, all dogs need at least one walk a day for their physical and mental health - some dogs prefer a long leisurely walk, and others prefer multiple shorter walks split up throughout the day. You can also incorporate games and playtime into your dog’s daily routine to keep things fun in-between walks.”

Unless your vet advises otherwise, all dogs need at least one walk a day for their physical and mental health - some dogs prefer a long leisurely walk, and others prefer multiple shorter walks split up throughout the day. You can also incorporate games and playtime into your dog’s daily routine to keep things fun in-between walks.”
Your dog’s breed plays a large part in their natural energy levels, which affects how much exercise they need. Some high-energy breeds need significantly more exercise than others, as well as mental stimulation throughout the day. Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, and Shih Tzu’s still need exercise, but often struggle to breathe due to the shape of their face so they need extra consideration to not over-exert them during walks and playtime. Very high-energy breeds These breeds are ideal for active owners who will take them out on adventures and make sure they have plenty to do all the time. They need plenty of varied exercise opportunities every day and we recommend spreading these across the day in several walks to have a good sniff around, with off-lead time on top. As well as keeping their paws active, you want to keep their brains busy, too! Make sure you have plenty of time to play with your dog, have training sessions and create some games that will really challenge their minds to prevent them from getting bored. Popular very high energy breeds include Labradors, Siberian Huskies, Border Collies, German
Shepherds, Dalmatians, and Golden Retrievers. High-energy breeds Whilst these breeds still require plenty of exercise opportunities, they may want a little more downtime than the very highenergy breeds. They will still want daily varied exercise, on top of some brain games to provide mental stimulation, however, will also appreciate some time to relax and rest their paws, more than breeds with more energy to burn! Popular high energy breeds include Whippets, Poodles, French Bulldogs and Cocker Spaniels. Moderate-energy breeds Although these breeds aren’t known for bouncing off the walls with energy, they will still require a good amount of exercise in order to keep them fit, active and healthy. All dogs, regardless of energy levels still require exercise, as well as mental stimulation to avoid becoming a couch potato! If your dog prefers a gentle plod over a run around, be sure to offer plenty of brain games for them to participate in. Popular moderateenergy breeds include Miniature Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers, and King Charles Spaniels. www.westiesandbestiesmagazine.com
Being a healthy weight and shape will improve your pet’s quality of life, as they can enjoy walks and activity, which in turn improves their mental health, and can delay the onset of long-term diseases, helping them to live longer. Shauna added: “it can feel like a big challenge to get a pet to lose weight or keep off the pounds, but trust us, it’s worth it for the long term – we all want our dogs to be in our lives for as long as possible! When your dog is their ideal size and shape, they will be healthier, happier, and more active. They will also have the best chance of living a long, healthy life. If you are struggling with your pet’s weight, contact your vet for help and advice.” PDSA launched the PDSA #WeighUp Pet Weight Loss Support Group, for fellow pet owners to join, share their progress and access exclusive tips and content, including weekly Q&As with PDSA vets and vet nurses, all to help each pet owner with their pet’s weight loss journey. s canine medicine becomes more researched and well-acknowledged, the information available about nutrition for dogs is now advanced. A healthy raw diet complimented with a range of other beneficial foods can really set your dog’s health on the right track. In pursuit of the right diet for your dog, you may have come across some common food supplements such as prebiotics and probiotics, but what exactly are these and should you include them in your dog’s regular diet? To understand these terms, you must have a basic understanding of your dog’s digestive system. Just as humans, dog’s need food to survive for their basic energy needs to be able to function and complete their everyday tasks. Every function that happens in your dog’s body requires energy and dogs gain their energy from food. Dogs use fat as their primary source of energy, unlike humans; we use carbohydrates (sugars) as our primary source of energy.
The fat from what your dog eats is converted into energy and used to power cells in their body. Dogs do not chew their food, they swallow whole, and this food is passed down the oesophagus into the stomach. Your dog’s stomach acid is likely to produce up to 100 times the amount of acid than that of a human stomach. [1] The acid breaks down the food in the stomach and the vital nutrients are absorbed into your dog’s bloodstream. Natural bacteria Prebiotic fibres in food are not digested in the stomach, instead they are passed down to the large intestine where the trillions of natural bacteria are there awaiting the prebiotic fibres to ferment and use them for growth. Prebiotics are essentially the food for the natural bacteria in your dog’s gut and both are vital for your dog’s immune system. When your dog has a good balance of natural bacteria in their 1 https://vetericyn.com/blog/the-dogdigestive-system/

gut then they will have a strong functioning immune system and naturally be able to defend harmful pathogens and disease. Dogs are prone to eating something outside that didn’t agree with them or they may contract a common virus, if your dog doesn’t have a good immune system then they will be more challenged to fight off disease. There are many ways to keep your dog’s natural bacteria in balance and it first begins by ensuring their diet is as natural as possible. A raw diet is best for dogs and if you are not sure what this means, then head to your local raw pet shop to learn some of the foods and brands available to support your dog’s diet.
Fibrous foods Aside from eating raw, dogs should eat certain fibrous vegetables. These prebiotic fibres found in the vegetables are passed down to the bacteria in the large intestine to help the friendly bacteria multiply in numbers. It’s important to note here that not all vegetables are good for dogs and not all of them are considered prebiotic either. Consider including dandelion, chicory root, flaxseed, amongst others. These fibrous foods should be given raw, as heat can alter the fibre content within them. This is important, do not be fooled by brands that claim a product is a prebiotic. If it has been processed with heat, then the fibres will have changed and there will be little to no health benefit.
Fermented foods Now we’ve covered prebiotics, let’s take a closer look at probiotics. As previously mentioned, probiotics are natural bacteria usually given
16
in the form of certain foods or supplements. Natural bacteria grow and multiply when they go through a process of fermentation. Fermented foods are a wonderful natural source of probiotics and can provide your dog everything they need to keep their gut microbiome in balance. If your dog has taken medication such as antibiotics, then probiotics are essential to support your dog’s natural gut microbiome. Antibiotics are amazing at killing infection, but antibiotics do not have the intelligence to kill only the harmful bacteria. Often, they will destroy other bacteria, particularly in the gut. Therefore, giving your dog fermented foods daily when they are taking antibiotics can support the balance of the natural bacteria, and fungi in your dog’s digestive system. Some of the best fermented foods are sauerkraut, kefir, yoghurt, and kimchi (homemade where you can, otherwise chose a reputable brand to buy from). It’s important to note here that heating fermented foods will kill off all the bacteria. We know that heat kills bacteria, because that’s what naturally happens when we have an infection (our body temperature raises to kill the bacteria), so please do not cook or heat your fermented foods. Gut health is a vital part of your dog’s wellness, so please do not ignore it. By choosing to feed your dog the right foods mean your visits to the vet will be less, and therefore costing you less. Prevention is always better than cure, so ensure that you include prebiotics and probiotics regularly in your dog’s diet. Don’t wait for them to be unwell before you take action.

Benefits Bone BY ANNA BAIN
Bone broth has been a nutritional staple in humans’ diets for centuries. However, research also suggests it’s an invaluable dietary component for man’s best friend. According to experts, bone broth is a perfect addition to any dog’s diet; it is incredibly nutrient dense and has been seen to support dogs who are transitioning to raw feeding, recovering from injuries and illness, joint issues, or suffering from digestive ailments. Meanwhile, bone broth is a great source of sustenance for picky eaters.

or Westies in particular, bone broth can truly be transformative, helping to ease allergy and intolerance symptoms such as itchy skin and digestive issues. Although, its benefits are often underestimated. My name is Anna Bain, and I am a dog nutrition specialist at ProDog Raw; to help you better understand bone broth’s many benefits, I’m sharing some ways this diet-enriching food can support your dog’s health and happiness. Bone broth is made from the bones and connective tissues of animals, creating a nutrientdense stock that supports dogs’ wellbeing in an abundance of ways. You can make bone broth using bones from almost any animal; however, when it comes to dogs, chicken, beef, and lamb options are ideal, whilst pork, turkey, venison, and fish can also be used. Bone broth truly is a superfood powerhouse for your dog. If your dog is feeling a little under the weather or struggles with gut imbalances, skin irritations, or even joint mobility issues, then bone broth is a perfect addition to their regular diet. It contains various properties, including collagen, glycine, glycosaminoglycans, magnesium, and calcium, which support the following areas of dogs’ wellbeing, to name just a few:
1
Joint health. Glycosaminoglycans are molecules found in all
20
connective tissues that help to keep our joints healthy. Hyaluronic acid, glucosamine, and chondroitin are the most common forms of this. Bone broth also contains calcium, magnesium, and several amino acids which support joint mobility and a healthy inflammatory response. It is fast becoming a go-to remedy for professional athletes following an injury and a popular form of preventative joint care for this very reason. Fortunately, our canine friends are no different and reap the same rewards; bone broth will protect and lubricate their joints, even helping to reduce symptoms associated with arthritis.
2
Liver health. The liver is the master organ of the body, in charge of eliminating toxins from your system – a process known as detoxification. The liver relies on the availability of an amino acid called glycine to operate efficiently, and, unsurprisingly, this is found in bone broth. Your dog’s liver works tirelessly every day to process the toxins their body absorbs from the environment, cleaning products, treatments on carpets and upholstery, processed foods, flea and worming treatments, pharmaceutical medicines, and so much more. As such, the liver can become overloaded, with bone broth offering invaluable support.
Westies & Besties - May 2023
3
Kidney health. The kidneys are responsible for removing toxins and waste from the body, whilst filtering nutrients and controlling fluid levels. Bone broths are fortunately exceptionally hydrating for dogs, and full of electrolytes, therefore supporting kidney health by minimising the demands placed on them. In addition, select herbs can act as diuretics and be added to bone broth. For example, ProDog Raw’s dandelion and nettle-infused bone broth for dogs provides extra nutritional support for the kidneys and their detoxing process.
4
Digestive health. It’s no secret that gut health is of optimum importance to overall health. An unhealthy gut can lead to poor nutrient absorption and an imbalanced immune response, in turn leading to systemic inflammation in the body and various other health conditions. Gut imbalance is the root of many health issues in both humans and dogs. Imbalanced gut flora and damage to the lining of the gut can occur through stress, poor diet, and certain medications, amongst other things. The result is a compromised gut environment
Rebalancing the gut is an important first step in improving overall health, and bone broth is a fantastic aid for this. Bone broth is a tonic for the digestive system because it contains collagen, which forms gelatin when cooked down. Gelatin contains amino acids such as glutamine, which works to strengthen the integrity of the gut lining, promoting a healthy gut environment that can resume functionality to support whole-body health. If you’re a Westie owner with any of these concerns regarding your dog’s health, or simply want to ensure they’re enjoying
all of the nutrients they need as part of a rich, healthy diet, then bone broths are certainly worth considering. Fortunately, bone broth isn’t difficult to make. You will need 1-2kg of bones (chicken, beef, pork, venison, fish, or turkey), 1-2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar, and water – that’s it. Place all of your ingredients in a pot or slow cooker, cover them with water
and a splash of apple cider vinegar to draw out minerals, bring to a boil, reduce to simmer, and cook for 12-24 hours. Then, cool the mixture, remove the fat floating on top, strain any solids from the broth, and it will be ready for your dog to enjoy. Although, it is important to note that you should only refrigerate bone broth for approximately three days; otherwise, freeze and defrost as needed.

with Joint Supplements Images supplied by Pets Purest
Dog owners everywhere will be increasing their dog’s exercise by going on more walks as we head into spring. However, while physical exercise can heavily improve the health of dogs’ joints, the overall function of pets’ joints can also be influenced by what goes into their dinner bowl. Whether they are a puppy or a senior pooch, adding supplements to the diet provides endless benefits including reducing inflammation, boosting energy levels, and easing joint and hip pain. To help dog owners across the UK maintain or increase their dog’s level of activity, Pets Purest have rounded up some of their bestselling supplements.
100% Natural Premium Turmeric Curcumin (£10.99 for 60 capsules) Turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can be useful when looking at joint health in pets. The Pets Purest 100% Natural Premium Turmeric Curcumin capsules are packed full of curcumin, the primary substance found in turmeric. But before dog owners go reaching in their spice rack, it’s important to be aware that Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, rapidly metabolised and quickly expelled from the body, meaning the full benefits of this ingredient cannot be appreciated. That is why the Pets Purest capsules are paired with Bioperine — the major active component of black pepper. When turmeric is combined with curcumin, absorption rates increase up to 2,000%. As a natural anti-inflammatory, turmeric curcumin will help dogs maintain flexibility and mobility of their hips and joints while also soothing joint and hip pain in ageing dogs.

Scuttellaria Biacalensis — a flowering plant that has been widely used as medicine in China to help alleviate joint discomfort and reduce stiffness. 100% Natural Pure Scottish Salmon Oil (£11.99) Salmon oil contains powerful antioxidant qualities, including a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 acids are an important component of healthy cell membranes as they reduce inflammation, which causes pain and discomfort in joints. In addition, Omega-3 acids have also been shown to support skin, heart, and immune system health — nourishing your dog from the inside out.

In addition to all the benefits of turmeric, Pets Purest 100% Natural Joint & Hip Pro also contains:
circulation, and even helping to slow the progression of cartilage damage. These ingredients collectively help to support and manage joint and hip mobility throughout all stages of a dog’s life. And with dogs being pros at spitting out tablets or sniffing out unwanted extras in their meals, the 100% Natural Joint & Hip aid has been designed with this in mind. All owners need to do is simply drop the liquid directly into their dog’s mouth using a practical no-mess pipette or mix it into their food as the concentrated formula makes it hard for even dogs to detect.

And that’s not all! Salmon oil can help strengthen the connective tissue around a dog’s joints, helping puppy owners promote healthy joints and senior dog owners ease comfort and protect against damage. All dog owners need to do is pump a small amount onto their dog’s meal and the hard work is done. The oil has a natural, delicious taste that is highly palatable.

As a result, many pet owners are eagerly anticipating more regular walks with their furry companions.

To ensure your pet stays happy and healthy this Spring, Dr Emma Scales-Theobald, PhD, a Dog Behaviourist at Pooch & Mutt, shares her top tips and advice for your bestie, including:
• Walking your dog at least once a day for 30 minutes • Monitoring your dog’s behaviour before walks • How to spot your dog ‘asking’ for a walk • Sticking to a routine to form a schedule • Importance of exercise for your pet

Dr Emma Scales-Theobald, PhD, Dog Behaviourist at Pooch & Mutt, comments on Springtime walks: ‘Walks are very important for dogs, as they provide physical exercise and mental stimulation. Dogs need physical exercise to stay healthy, maintain their weight, and prevent boredom and taking your dog for a walk is a great way to provide them with the exercise they need. Depending on the breed, age, and health of the dog, the amount of exercise required will vary. However, all dogs need some level of exercise every day. Walks provide dogs with a variety of sights, sounds, and smells that stimulate their minds. Dogs are naturally curious creatures, and a walk can be a great opportunity for them to explore new environments and engage with their

surroundings. A lack of regular walks can lead to a range of issues, such as obesity, boredom, and behavioural problems. Therefore, it’s important for dog owners to make time for regular walks to keep their furry friends happy and healthy.’ Dr Emma’s Springtime walking top tips: 1. Walk at least once a day for 30 minutes The frequency and duration of walks for a dog will depend on several factors, including age, breed, size, health, and individual needs. Generally, dogs should be walked at least once a day for 30 minutes to an hour. However, some dogs may require more exercise, and others may be content with less. In addition to regular walks, dogs also benefit from playtime,
interactive games, and other forms of exercise. It’s important to provide them with a variety of physical and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. 2. Monitor your dogs’ behaviour It is very common for dogs to “ask” to go for a walk through specific behaviours to indicate that they want to go for a walk, such as bringing their leash to their owner, sitting by the front door, or even whining. These behaviours can be a form of communication between the dog and their owner, indicating that the dog is ready for a walk and wants to spend time outside. Many dogs will naturally develop a routine where they know when it’s time for their daily walk, and they may become excited and show signs of anticipation when they see their leash or hear certain words www.westiesandbestiesmagazine.com
associated with going for a walk, such as “walk,” “outside,” or “leash.” It’s important for dog owners to pay attention to their dog’s signals and respond appropriately. If a dog is showing signs of wanting to go for a walk, it’s usually a good idea to take them out for some exercise and mental stimulation. This can help keep the dog happy, healthy, and well-behaved. 3. Stick to a routine Dogs can develop a sense of routine and may come to expect walks at certain times of the day. Dogs are creatures of habit and often thrive on predictable schedules. It’s important for dog owners to be consistent with their dog’s routines and schedule walks at regular intervals. This can help establish a sense of structure and predictability for the dog, which can reduce stress and anxiety. 27

An open-minded vet will appreciate your questions, concerns and research and will understand that you have your Westie’s best interests at heart. To this end, the majority of openminded vets will choose to work in partnership with you to help you on the journey of protecting your pet’s health and wellbeing.

irstly, what we need to take on board is a vet is a very special person. Not only do vets have a love of animals, but they are also highly educated, dedicated to the profession, compassionate about the health and wellbeing of your pet, and in some cases open minded. To achieve their qualifications, a lot of hard work takes place over several years and on top of this they have signed up to a huge financial commitment too in order to follow their career path which for the majority is a vocation. Vets deal with worried, anxious, distraught, and stressed pet owners on a daily basis. They must be equipped to deal with people and try to keep a level head when an owner becomes emotional or upset. A good vet will try to keep an owner focused, and keep the situation calm and relaxed for the benefit of the pet and the owner. Most vets work long hours starting early in the morning until late evening, sometimes they are on call 24 hours a day. On a daily basis they face challenges such as coping with aggressive or highly stressed pets or having to give an owner devastating or heart-breaking news. They have to be empathetic, sympathetic and treat an owner with kindness when their pet has made their final journey. At the end of the day a veterinary career can be incredibly rewarding but incredibly stressful at the same time. Try to remember that vets are human, just like you and me, we are all equal, and they truly believe that the advice and treatment they offer for your pet is in the best interest of the animal and that they are suggesting a safe and correct course of action. 31
Pet owners are becoming more educated feature
These days pet owners are becoming more and more aware that vaccines, flea and worm pesticides, early desexing, prescription diets, dry food and long-term drugs (although essential in some cases) are not always the best answer for some pets. Owners are doing their own research into diet and nutrition, titre testing, natural flea and worm treatments and leaving a dog until it’s sexually mature before getting desexed. More and more owners are educating themselves on alternative therapies and remedies, they also appreciate that a good open-minded vet is essential when providing any necessary or emergency treatments. This is where we can occasionally hit a bit of a brick wall and you can come across the vet bully, that will quote unintelligible words, show pompous expressions, and try to make us feel guilty that we are hurting our precious pet with our choices etc. However, with a few simple skills it is possible to build a supportive partnership with your vet, and to keep the health care of your dog on an even keel. This will, or should, cut down on the stress you might have when visiting the vet if they are not as open minded as you would like. No one wants to get upset and be in an awkward position and end up having an argument. Remember a good vet is an educator not a dictator.
Do your research Firstly, we need to talk about Out of Hours Care as this information could be critical for you if you have a very poorly animal out of hours i.e. after 9.00pm. Probably the first question you will be asked is “are you insured?”, if the answer is ‘no’ you must ask what the cost is likely to be as this could be upwards of £290 plus any treatment is on top of this. You also need to know how many vets there are on call at any one time, especially if you are using a very large veterinary chain. Sometimes there may be only one, plus one vet nurse and one receptionist. This small team could be responsible for up to 18 practices in a 25-mile radius. They will also be responsible for the care of any critical inpatients at the same time. You need to be aware that if this does happen, it’s the system. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) clearly state that you have to be told this information. I suggest you check and double check this information, they have to tell you, as you are the customer. Chances are you could arrive at a surgery with your critically ill pet to be told the vet is unavailable and with another animal and can’t see you immediately and the consequences could be devastating.
32
Why do we sometimes find ourselves in that awkward position of either arguing, or caving in on something we really don’t want to do? One word covers this, UNPREPARED! Make sure you are prepared before your visit. So you need to find the most open-minded practice you can possibly find. To do that call and keeping calling. Call every practise you can find and don’t be afraid to enquire about who is the most open-minded vet, as this is the one that you want and need. Once you’ve done this, make a check list and stick to it, don’t be intimidated. For example, if you do not wish to vaccinate your dog and you prefer to do a titre test instead, ask the vet if they offer this service. If you feed your Westie a species appropriate diet/fresh food/raw diet, yes it’s balanced, yes you have done your research. Take a pack of the food with you to show the vet the ingredients. Tell your vet you feed yourself a fresh wholesome diet, you feed your family the same and you want the same for your dog. If you give your Westie natural flea and worm treatments following your own indepth research, then perhaps consider printing off your research to show your vet so you can both have an informed discussion about it. Don’t’ be afraid to always stay in the room and hold your pet if they have to have bloods taken as it would be better for you to observe (unless there really is a reason why you can’t). A scary situation at the vets where your pet can’t see you can knock your dog’s confidence for any future visits and these future visits can become a real issue for your dog, they can possibly smell stress and fear in the waiting room from sick dogs who were there previous to your visit. If your Westie should need drugs of any type, ask for a list of the side effects and what to look out for. (Many vets don’t know this information so it’s worth asking them to look it up.) This is your precious pet, and you need to know this information before agreeing to drugs. Remember if you are given a human medication for your pet, this comes under the Prescription Cascade, and you must sign a form understanding this and the side effects. You also have absolutely no obligation to sign up to any monthly care plans that cover vaccines, pesticides and check-ups. You have the right to say no! You are the customer, and you are attending with your pet and your pet is your responsibility.

You and your vet should be a partnership, you are an integral part of his/her health care team, so try and get on first name terms. If you work with a holistic vet too then make sure this is documented on your dog’s records. The vet should be very interested and should interact with your pet at all times. My vet always gets on the floor with my dogs, he knows their names and who is who. Take your own treats for the vet to give to your pet. Unfortunately, the stuff in the surgeries is not always the best quality with the best ingredients.
Medical files Finally, make sure your preferences are documented on the front of your dog’s file, and then you don’t have to go through it all again if and when you need to. If you are ever made to feel uncomfortable you can either discuss with the practise or find another vet. I know some pet owners are nervous about attending appointments because of the choices they make for their pets, and they can feel judged, but this should not be the case. Just be prepared before you go. The best way to promote good health is through education and understanding. Being a veterinarian is one of the most demanding professions in the medical field and most vets deserve the utmost respect. We need to be thankful for their dedication to animals, for their commitment and compassion to their profession, and we should take the time to say thank you. An open-minded vet will appreciate your questions, concerns and research and will understand that you have your Westie’s best interests at heart. To this end, the majority of openminded vets will choose to work in partnership with you to help you on the journey of protecting your pet’s health and wellbeing.

aunched in 2022 by Sam Cartwright and Xavier Warburton, Tangle is a premium, sustainable dog brand on a mission to raise awareness around the issue of ghost nets being dumped in our oceans. Both lifelong dog lovers, Sam and Xavier first met whilst working with different startups in central London and bonded over their joint passion for sustainability and a desire to make a tangible difference in the world. The idea for Tangle was born out of their shock at the impact ghost nets had on ocean life combined with the realisation that approaching the problem sustainably with the help of man’s best friend was a great way to also raise awareness. With a mission to make a real difference to global ocean life preservation, Tangle’s range of premium dog accessories made from recycled fishing nets, prevents these nets from entering the marine ecosystem. Every Tangle product sold also supports Ghost Fishing UK, a charity dedicated to removing abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear from UK waters. counteract the ghost net problem in an innovative way, repurposing old fishing nets into long-lasting dog products for environment conscious dog owners. Tangle Co-founder Xavier Warburton explains: “For 2023, we’re on track to stop 526 tennis courts worth (137,800 sqm) of fishing nets becoming ghost nets. We’re all aware of the impact of plastic bottles and straws, but in reality, ghost nets make up nearly half of all ocean plastics and they’re far more deadly. By creating our beautifully made dog products from recycled nets, we’re helping animal lovers save the oceans without compromising on quality, function, or design.” The Tangle Dog Lead has all the benefits of a fishing net, newly recycled with a strong 4ft dog lead, it’s conveniently lightweight, waterproof, non-stink, strong and chewproof. Each product features a padded cork handle, easy carry clip and safe and secure fastening. Available in two sizes 10mm and 12mm depending on the size of your dog. £39 including P&P. About Wave Sustainable brand, Wave, consists of three friends trying to encourage the change we want to see in the world, one biodegradable phone case at a time. Growing up in a small seaside town in the Northeast of England, they have seen first-hand the devastating effects plastic pollution has had and is having upon our oceans. They decided to act and created Wave. Their first product, Wave Case, was designed as a stylish yet biodegradable phone case made from wheat straw. Afterall, if you’re going to protect your phone, make sure you protect the planet too!
S
pring has sprung, which means it’s time for the big spring clean.
The crew at Wave are on a mission to help people find eco-friendly alternatives that make a small difference to your lifestyle, but a big difference to the planet. That’s why they’ve partnered up with Mahira Kalim, Founder and CEO of Spruce, to share top tips on how to do a big, eco-friendly spring clean.
What is ecofriendly cleaning? Eco-friendly cleaning, or ‘green cleaning’, is when you use products that are not harmful to the environment. Instead, you use products made of natural ingredients for a more environmentally friendly clean.
How harmful are chemical cleaning products? Mahira explains how the concoction of toxic chemicals found in cleaning products impacts our health and the planet: “For decades, we’ve trusted cleaning brands to keep us safe. But here’s the truth:
40
regulations for what can – and can’t – be added to these products haven’t changed at all.
Why should I switch to eco-friendly cleaning?
Traditional cleaning products contain a cocktail of toxic chemicals, such as VOCs, pesticides, phthalates, ammonia, and chlorine bleach, just to name a few. Because of products like these, the air inside our homes can be up to five times more polluted than the air outside!
The most obvious reason is because it is a lot better for you and for the environment. The elimination of harmful chemicals in cleaning products reduces pollution and improves your health.
This indoor air pollution is harmful to the planet and our health, often contributing to serious health concerns like hormone disruption, infertility, breathing difficulties and even cancer. A study, spanning over 30 years by Harvard University, found that using bleach just once a week could increase the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by 30%. Furthermore, a more recent Norwegian study suggests exposure to cleaning products has the same effect on the lungs as smoking 20 cigarettes a day. That’s why it’s so important to switch to a non-toxic eco alternative.”
Mahira explains: “Most cleaning brands rely on single-use plastics, synthetic fragrances (known as carcinogens and endocrine disruptors), palm oil, petroleum, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals in their formulations. Plus, it’s estimated that 468 million plastic cleaning spray bottles are thrown away in the UK every year, with less than 9% of plastic being recycled. Instead, it ends up polluting our waterways and soil, causing ocean acidification, threatening marine life, and even ending up in the food we eat. Choosing to switch to a refillable and single-use, plastic-free option is far better for the planet, and your health. Just this simple

Refillable cleaning is also often a cost-effective solution later down the line. For example, at Spruce, once you have the refillable bottle, our refills can be purchased for as low as £1.75 per full bottle of cleaner. Eco-friendly cleaning products also contain no toxic chemicals, and are instead made with safe, natural, ethically sourced ingredients. By switching to eco-friendly alternatives, you can prevent indoor air pollution in your home and reduce your chances of ingesting and inhaling toxins which contribute to serious health concerns.”
What are the best pet-friendly cleaning products? According to Mahira: “The best eco-friendly cleaning ingredients that are safe for pets are those that are non-toxic and chemical free. This is because it’s very easy for animals to come into contact with these chemicals through their paws or by licking surfaces. Ingesting or inhaling these chemicals can cause a range of health problems for pets, including respiratory issues, skin irritation, poisoning, and even organ damage. You can utilise safe ingredients with natural antimicrobial properties that are already lying around your home. Vinegar, lemon, and bicarbonate of soda are must-haves for pet-friendly households!
You can try the Spruce nontoxic refillable cleaning products, which are made with safe, non-toxic ingredients and fragranced with natural organic essential oils. With no harsh chemicals, it means your fourlegged-friends – and you – can breathe clean.”
What eco-friendly cleaning products should I use? The eco-friendly cleaning market is continuing to grow and there are plenty of sustainable products you can use to switch to green cleaning. Try and opt for products that are made from natural, vegan-friendly ingredients and avoid anything with harsh chemicals in. Products like plastic-free spray bottles, bamboo brushes and reusable cloths are also great items to own.
How to make your own cleaning products One way to clean ‘greener’ is to make your own products from natural ingredients you can find at home. It’s cheaper and a lot better for the environment and will leave your home spick and span. A great alternative to bleach is a mixture of lemon juice, vinegar, and borax, whilst tea tree oil is also another effective solution. Mahira adds: “When it comes to making your own ecofriendly cleaning products, a few simple ingredients like bicarbonate of soda, lemon, white vinegar, and essential oils, will be your best friends. Natural and organic essential oils are not only a safer

alternative to synthetic fragrances, but they also have natural antimicrobial and antiviral properties, which can be good for disinfecting surfaces naturally. Citric acid is also great for cleaning purposes, whether it’s formulated in a product or used as a stand-alone ingredient. It’s effective at tackling soap scum, hard water stains, calcium deposits, lime, and rust, and it can help kill bacteria, mould, and mildew. It’s great for general disinfecting and cleaning without harming your health or the planet.” Oven cleaner “Spruce Multipurpose Cleaner Spray: This natural but powerful multipurpose spray is perfect for cleaning your oven without any harsh chemicals ending up in the very place you cook your food. Formulated by scientists to be highly effective against grease and grime without harsh chemicals.” Carpet cleaner “Bicarbonate of soda is a great natural carpet cleaner for general use and stains. Sprinkle baking soda lightly all over the carpet or stained area, rub in and let the baking soda sit on the carpet for 30 minutes, before vacuuming the carpet as you normally would.” Fridge deodorizer “One of my favourite ecofriendly cleaning hacks you can easily do at home is to make your own fridge deodorizer from bicarb and essential oils. Simply add half a cup of bicarbonate of soda and 5-6 drops of your favourite essential oil to a small jar and place in the back of your fridge to warn off any nasty odours it works every time.”
