Ceremony to Recognize 562 Seniors KATELYN SMITH NEWS EDITOR
In the 31st Annual Commencement Ceremony, the Class of 2009 will graduate 562 seniors on Thursday, June 11 at 5 p.m. at the Warrior Stadium. After the WHS Band performs the Processional and the National Anthem directed by Band Director Brian Peter, senior class president Austin Walker will welcome all graduates and their families to the special occasion. A Class Act will perform “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” followed by a speech
titled “Giving Thanks” by Brandon Hagy. Bryan Lazar will follow Hagy’s speech with his performance of “Stop This Train.” Assistant Principal of Instruction, Steve Lepire, will then present the nine valedictorians. Meryl Press’s speech “Our Time” will follow, along with a duet of “My Time with You” featuring Miko Shudo and Max Miletich. The Class of 2009 will first be presented by Principal Ron Lipari, and then accepted by Timothy Stephens, President of CVUSD Board of Education. Walker will accept diplomas, and the
Alma Mater will be performed by WHS Band. The Recessional will follow, and the PTSA will host a reception for the graduates. The addition of the jumbotron to the WHS football field, will allow videographers to capture each individual student graduating and receiving their diploma. The Baccalaureate Ceremony will be held on Sunday June 7 beginning at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, which is located on the corner of Westlake Blvd. and Hampshire. A rabbi and a pastor are scheduled
to speak at the ceremony, along with Conrad Wilton with his speech “Inevitable Change.” Students who want to participate in the ceremony, are expected to wear their caps and gowns, and arrive at 1:30 p.m. for check in. The Class of 2009, “distinguished themselves in every aspect of school, from academics to athletics and visual and performing arts,” said Lipari. He would like to leave the class with an English Proverb he feels embodies his dreams for their futures: “ A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner.”

This year’s graduating class presents nine valedictorians—all bright and well-rounded students who stand out from the rest. For the past four years, these students have not only managed to receive at least 4.65 indexed GPA, but also balanced school work and outside activities. Valedictorians share that their secret to success is “time management,” said Ray Zhang, and “multi-tasking” said Kim Bielak. Lynne Qiu swears by “repetition, redundancy, and review. “ All of these skills are must-haves with the busy lives that this year’s valedictorians lead. The activities they participate in range from dance team to Advanced Anatomy. “It gets crazy trying to keep a balance between an academic life, a social life, and sleep. Not to mention dance team,” said Bielak. Next year, all nine valedictorians are heading to top schools—Duke, UC Berkeley, Dartmouth, UCSD, and Pomona College. “I applied to a lot of schools and I just hoped that I would get into at least one, so I’m ultimately happy with my choice. Visit the colleges you are applying to and above all, pay attention to the people who are there. If you feel like you could belong there, then that school would be a good choice for you,” said Tim Pang. Some of them even admitted that they in fact are not perfect and that getting perfect grades was a struggle. Jennifer Fang said she got a B in World History AP her freshman year and “struggled to keep A’s in English every year that timed essays were involved.” Bielak said she almost got a B in Math Analysis and Carol Yu said she had trouble in Spanish 4AP. “I got a B in first semester of Math Analysis and struggled to make an A second semester. Shocker, right? Not really. I often find myself struggling with math,” said Qiu. Unlike most other seniors, second semester of senior year is not a time to relax for valedictorians because they still need A’s to secure their spots. “The hardest part was keeping my GPA high during senior year because everyone else could slack off and I couldn’t, said Wesley Wong. ““Luckily I never really felt like I had to give up anything but the hardest part is probably balancing school activities and school,” said Faryar Ghaemi. Many valedictorians have a passion for learning as
evidenced by their exemplary grades. “I would say the point is not to be valedictorian, but to learn to love what you are learning. Like Mark Twain said, ‘I never let schooling interfere with my education.’ The rest will fall into place,” said Bielak. Jeff Semigran attributes his success in school to the influence of his father who “got me into enjoying school rather than dreading it because it can be difficult, boring and time consuming. His attitude in life is really inspiring and he’s just really been a good friend.” And although they are usually laden with school work, all valedictorians still make time to relax. “I think I would have driven myself into the ground, if [my friends] hadn’t forced me to take some time off and relax every now and then. Their humor helps me smile, even when I’m feeling really stressed, “ said Qiu. “Outside of school, I like to have spa sessions at my friend’s house,” said Zhang. “Gotta have fun on the weekends, leave the weekdays to get things done, go to the gym, and study, lay out and study, you know,” said Ghaemi. Finally, valedictorians offer their advice for younger students. “Never believe in the rumors concerning someone’s intelligence; 90% of the time the rumor is wrong. Just do your best to get an A. Remember, an A- is equal in weight to an A+,” said Wong. Essentially, their advice echoes the same things that our teachers have been emphasizing for years—work hard and pay attention. “I pay attention to my teachers and ask a lot of questions when I don’t understand things,” said Semigran. “It’s your choice of natural intelligence or raw hard work...or a mix of both,” said Fang.

Favorite Quotes Kim Bielak: Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something. Jennifer Fang: Achievement is balanced by fault, by a lack. Can’t have one without the other. Everyone who excels, is overcompensating. Faryar Ghaemi: Life is a book and the ones who don’t travel have only read one page. Tim Pang: Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine perspiration. Lynne Qiu: What...is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? Jeff Semigran: The person who said it cannot be done is always interrupted by the person who just did it. Wesley Wong: It takes all the energy you have to stay where you are, to be faster, you must work twice as hard! Carol Yu: Sometimes glass glitters more than diamonds because it has more to prove. Another year has passed, and again, another senior class is getting ready to venture out into the adult world. With graduation approaching ever so quickly, it is time to reflect on these past four years. As the Class of 2009 steps out of the protective Westlake bubble, many students must prepare to confront the problems of the real world, such as cancer, war, and healthcare. Soon-to-be college students Liz Chan, Cassy Soltero, Joe Sterphone, and Haley Winter share their thoughts on facing these situations and post-high school life. On the issue of healthcare, students have many different views on whether it should be universal and the future status of this program. Some, such as Chan, believe that universal healthcare would be the best option for the future. “As a person interested in working in healthcare, I feel universal healthcare would help me touch as many lives as I can,” she said. “It’s not about lower wages to me. Isn’t the ideal wish when entering the healthcare profession to help people who are in need?” said Chan. Others believe that the current state of the American healthcare system will not be able to last and will change to one extreme or the other, sooner or later. “I think healthcare should be entirely privatized or entirely socialized. We keep trying to please everyone by staying in the middle of the road, and it only continues to hurt rather than help people,” said Winter. Not only does this situation pose a dilemma for the new generation, but the debates about this problem are also compounded by questions concerning drugs, war, and religion. “It’s very clear that the drug culture is rising again, now with marijuana back in the terms of legalization,” said Chan. “Drugs will always be there in future, but I think with it regulated, there will be less trouble.” As war and religion have always been present in human society, “they are two constants in this world [and] will continue to exist,” said Sterphone. “The
Joe Sterphone social networks seems like the easiest way to make public tidbits of private life that may make a popular social life but break a sound private life.” So with these numerous issues that they must face soon, seniors have reflected on the achievements and experiences of their years in high school that will ultimately shape their adult lives. “The sincerity and affability of youth will erode a little after escaping this protective bubble and facing the harsh worldly realities on our own,” said Soltero. “Thankfully, we will have much more to gain on our way towards becoming adults.” Despite the daily deluge of assignments and work, high school is essential to molding one’s character. “High school completes the cycle and produces students ready for any life they may have planned,” said Winter. In addition, although the amount of work may seem overwhelming, some seniors now realize that it was a necessary part of one’s development. “High school is a world in which everything is handed to you. It sure seems tough at the time, but just wait. Don’t rush through it. It’s all quite important to experience,” said Sterphone. And with graduation, students will inevitably mature and grow out of the faults of their high school selves. According to Chan, the main fault of students is that they “lack empathy and humility. Many feel they see the world, but in fact, they are so unaware of what is really out there and thus close their minds.” Sterphone added that “we think we are always right and that nothing we do could every be wrong. We roll our eyes when we get in trouble and consider the teacher to have done wrong.” So with the experiences and lessons learned from these past four years, the Class of 2009 is preparing for the once-ina-lifetime event of graduation. The memories and education from Westlake will undoubtedly serve them well as they enter the adult world.

Seniors to Attend Black Tie Affair SOFIA TALARICO FEATURE EDITOR
The long-awaited event of the year is here. After countless hours of planning, searching for the perfect dress, and choosing the ideal date, prom has arrived. A Black Tie Affair, Prom 2009, will be held at the Ronald Reagan Library in the Air Force One room from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. on June 6. The seniors will enjoy a buffet filled with salads, chicken, and pasta. For dessert, there will be brownies and other assorted tart treats. Prom court nominees, which were selected at senior seminar,
will be announced. Dress codes for this year will be similar to previous years. All girls and boys are expected to wear formal attire; the boys should wear a tuxedo or a fancy suit and girls should wear formal dresses. All attendees are forewarned that limousines will be searched for any alcohol or drugs. Security has been hired to conduct random breathalyzers. The decorations tie into the “Black Tie Affair” theme with black tablecloths and bouquets with red roses and white hydrangeas. Air Force One will be the centerpiece of the room. DJ Money, last year’s DJ, will
return to help the seniors dance the night away. Senior class advisor, Carly Dritz said out of all the venues she has seen, “this is the best one. It should be a really fun night.” “Prom is what we’ve been waiting for over the past four years,” said Senior Class President Austin Walker. “It’s the last big thing that we all do together before graduating.” Treasurer Shane Hegeman said, “It’s going to be a really great, classy, and elegant night and we’re really excited.” Prom will be an unforgettable night for all seniors, leaving them with lifetime memories.
For seniors, the month of June means finals, last minute college confirmations, summer plans, savoring last memories of high school, and prom. All over the country, prom is an extravagant rite of passage that has dated back to the late 1800’s. Unfortunately, this popular ritual may be modified this year due to the deep recession. Students are cutting back costs by renting dresses instead of buying, using family cars instead of limousines, and hosting mani-pedi parties rather than spending hundreds of dollars at pricey salons. According to event planners and marketers, the 4-billion-a-year prom industry is said to drop by as much as 20% this year due to rising unemployment rates for adults and teens. “To save money, I spent less on a dress,” said senior, Allison Montroy. “Also, I’m going to combine two limo
groups together so it is less per person.” Many schools are holding their prom on campus as opposed to a glitzy hotel. “There probably won’t be as much glamour this year because of the recession,” said Montroy. In many ways, getting back to a more simple prom embraces the original purpose of the event. The importance of any social function should not become lost in the grandeur of the affair. When reflecting back on prom, many years after the event, seniors will treasure the memories that will overshadow the amount of money spent. But for some, many of these rituals are not on the chopping block. Many are savoring the over-the-top tradition by purchasing sparkly dresses, party buses, and hundred dollar up-do’s. ”I know I’m going to go all out this year because prom is such a special occasion,” said Cassy Soltero.

McCorkle felt satisfied to have been able to act in several plays while maintaining her grades. Looking forward, McCorkle, who is headed to UC Berkeley in the fall, hopes to pursue a career teaching drama to underprivileged children. Looking back, McCorkle knows that the one thing she’ll miss is the “family dynamic about the theater program.” Conti is also sad to lose one of her valuable members in the program. “Behind the scenes, she’s a true leader,” said Conti. But she knows that McCorkle STAGE PRESENCE: Melanie McCorkle’s outstanding acting will be successful with has brightened Westlake’s theatre program.

If you were to look for a common theme in senior Melanie McCorkle’s life, it would be a passion for acting. Since her kindergarten years, McCorkle has dabbled in community theater, playing such roles as Pinocchio, as well as doing some professional work. Her passion for acting, however, has always come from a deeper desire. “I just wanted to make people laugh,” said McCorkle. Comedic acting is a favorite for McCorkle. Late nights watching “Saturday Night Live” served as a source of early inspiration for the aspiring thespian. In her many roles, McCorkle strives to incite laughter in her audience. “It’s a really good feeling when you can bring some momentary joy to people,” said McCorkle. Drama teacher Catherine Conti fondly recalled a role McCorkle acted for a theater exercise in Drama 1, when McCorkle played a Wisconsin nun in a
reality game show parody. By the end of the performance, Conti said she had experienced “one of the rare moments when I could not see through the tears of laughter,” and asked McCorkle to act it out several more times so she could tape it. This is not to say that McCorkle has shied away from her share of drama. One of her most challenging forays onto the WHS stage was when she played Big Mama in Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, a role she played as a freshman. Because the play addresses many mature issues, Conti first invited all the actors into her office for a script reading. Then she did something that surprised McCorkle. She asked the actors how far they were willing to go with the play. To McCorkle, that opportunity was a demonstration of Conti’s high expectations, and she was motivated to meet them. That role in addition to some of her other prominent roles as “Chris” in Rumors and “Emily” in Our Town made both McCorkle and her teacher proud. “Even as a freshman she has been one of

Cheerleaders Bring It On NATALYA SIVASHOV FEATURE EDITOR
The spirit cheer will not be the same next year without the 2009 graduating seniors. Coach Missy Zuckerman said ”I will miss all of the seniors. They all are such an important part of the team.” The senior cheer standouts this year were Haley Winter, Becca Winter and Melinda Peters. They all have been on the squad all four years, and “displayed tremendous leadership and always set a great example.” Melinda Peters has been the varsity captain for two years. ”With Melinda’s guidance and leadership skills, the varsity squad has been able to soar to new heights. I appreciate all that she does and will miss her,” said Zuckerman. Peters plans on going to Texas Christian University next year and she is going to be on the equestrian team there, although she has not yet decided what career she wants to take on in the future. Peters began cheer at around eight years old as a flyer. Her favorite memory out of the four years in cheer is cheer camp senior year. “All the girls bonded so well, and it was the most fun we all have ever had,” she said.
The Winters both did gymnastics from second to eighth grade and then joined spirit cheer upon entering high school. They have devoted their time and energy to spirit cheer. They helped make up the performances and made sure that all the girls are having a memorable experience. They have been strong assets and wonderful role models for the team. “I will truly miss them next year,” said Zuckerman. Becca is going to attend Chapman University with an undeclared major next fall, while Haley is going to University of Denver, where she is contemplating majoring in business. Both Becca and Haley agreed that they want to end on a good note, so they aren’t going to continue with cheer in college. “I love performing so I’m going to miss it a lot “ said Haley. Becca said that her favorite memory from cheer at WHS was the first football game of the season senior year. “It was our chance to set up the standard for the year, and right from the beginning we knew that it would be much better than last year,” said Becca Winter. The Winters and Peters agreed on their advice for the lower classmen: “Listen to Miss Zuckerman; respect her and then she’ll respect you.” “And just have fun,” Haley said.
DANCING AMONG THE STARS: Platt (left) will continue dance in college, while Bielak will keep it as a hobby.

Two dance team seniors, Rory Platt and Kim Bielak, are preparing themselves for college and getting ready for what is coming next in their lives. Both girls have dedicated themselves to dance team since their freshman year. Right off the bat, both girls made it into the top dances. Platt and Bielak received top places for their solos and helped the team win at the National Grand Championships. Platt began dancing when she was four years old at Bobbie’s School of Performing Arts. She decided to join dance team because she wanted to be a part of the school and be able to perform at rallies. Her favorite memories on dance team are winning the National Grand Champion title and dancing at all the football games at half-time for the rest of the school. Lucky enough, four years on the team paid off and helped Rory make it into the UCLA dance department (the World Arts and Culture major). “Rory will always be remembered for her amazing and flawless technical ability. Rory can beautifully execute any turn, kick, jump, or trick given to her. Ask Rory to do five turns and she will do them
perfectly the first time,” said Coach Becky Alderson. She will attempt any move given to her no matter how difficult it may be. She will always perform every dance with perfection.” Bielak started at two years old as a “bumble-bee.” She continued to dance because she was really into Britney Spears and thought hip-hop was intriguing. She auditioned for Dance Team because she wanted to be a part of the school. Her best memories on the team were when the girls decorated her hotel room for her birthday. With Nationals being such a stressful time for three days, it helped lighten the mood and make her birthday one to never forget. She will attend Berkeley and does not plan to take dancing anywhere else; she just plans on keeping it as a hobby. “Kimberly will always be remembered for leaving her heart on the floor every time she dances. Every time I watch Kim dance, I see her passion and love for dancing,” said Alderson. “She is inspiring in that she has the ability to draw an audience into the story she is telling with her movements.” “Throughout their experience on team they were hardworking, dedicated and an inspiration to the rest of the girls and to me as a coach” she said.
Nebens to Continue Music Career at Berklee CONRAD WILTON SPORTS EDITOR

Most outsiders perceive the WHS Regiment as a disciplined and industrious organization of musicians searching for a painless way to secure physical education credits, but for Richard Nebens ‘09, the Marching Band has provided him far more than a mere gym class exemption. The Regiment’s most attractive feature for Nebens is the “adrenaline rush” he savors after a performance and the opportunity to “just play [his] heart out.” Nebens has been a part of numerous field shows: Romeo & Juliet, A New Beginning, Frequency, and Journey Through Life: Trials and Tribulations, in which Nebens was a soloist. Nebens especially appreciates the social outlets the program offered. The Marching Band’s communal and cordial philosophies eased Nebens’ transition from Colina Middle School to WHS. The Regiment allowed Nebens to “connect with lots of kids,” and after meeting over 140 students in the summer, he “felt more comfortable” the first day of classes. As Regiment reached the pinnacle of its regime, the program received a new face, for Band Director Brian Peter became the head of Instrumental Music after Director Kyle Luck left. Despite the departure of nearly a third of the marching band, Nebens stood determined to persevere through the rough transition years. Reminiscing, Nebens made the right decision to stick
with the program and follow his preliminary instincts that drew him to the regiment in the first place. This last winter, Nebens was elected “section leader” of the trumpets and treasured the chance to improve the experience of the younger musicians. “After seeing how successful and accomplished the seniors were when I was a freshman, I remember wishing to be just like them.” According to Peter, Nebens’s habit to “lead by example” and his passion toward the organization elevated him above the average talented musician. Nebens “loves to volunteer and help in any way.” According to Peter, “Richard never had an off-day.” In addition to achieving excellence on the field in marching band competitions, Nebens earned membership into the prestigious Wind Ensemble from his sophomore year on and performed at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall last spring. Recently, Nebens was named the “most outstanding brass player” in the winter of 2009. “Richard enjoys practicing frequently” and possesses a thirst to improve his musical skills,” said his brother Daniel Nebens ‘12. According to Peter, Nebens has become a much “smarter player” with “good endurance” and strategic talents. Nebens was a lead player in the Studio Jazz Ensemble since his junior year, played numerous first trumpet parts in the Wind Ensemble, and received a “most improved player” award.

Dear Class of 2009, Thank you to everyone for making this year the best one yet. All of the good times we will take with us from senior showcase, picnic, and prom were definitely worth all of the stress and numerous class meetings. I could not have made these events possible however, if it wasn’t for all of the help I got from Ms. Blackburn, Ms. Harrison, Ms. Simpson, Ms. Funfar, The Enforcer, the rest of the senior board, and of course our class advisor, Miss Dritz. All of the administrators, parents, and ASG class also put so much effort into making this year unforgettable, so thank you for all of your time and hard work. The past four years at Westlake have been indescribable; and we have all made memories and friendships that will stay with us long after we leave our safe “Westlake bubble.” All of the lessons we have learned and changes that we have made here have prepared us to achieve remarkable accomplishments wherever we all end up next year; and even though we are separating, Westlake will always be the bond that holds us together. It has been a crazy, stressful, intense, and needless to say amazing time over these four years, but we did it! Congratulations Class of 2009!

SCHOLAR ATHLETES 2008-2009 ALESSANDRA CATANESE SPORTS EDITOR
When looking at the records of swimming champion Jackie Brousseau ‘09 and football star Spencer Christiansen ‘09, the lists seem to never end: broke this record, set that record, won this many titles, received this many awards. The only question left is what do they have that’s not on paper? What do they have that makes them worthy of the title “Scholar Athlete?” The one word that both used to describe themselves was, “determination.” Both Brousseau and Christiansen believe they have more than enough determination to have earned them the numerous honors and awards they hold. Now the nominees for the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame, Brousseau and Christiansen are proud of all the hard work, time, and effort they have put in and devoted to their teams. “On average I swim about 20 hours a week, and I have to wake up at 5 a.m. three days a week to swim before school,” explained Brousseau. Learning to swim at the age of three, Brousseau began swimming competitively only two years later for Conejo Simi Aquatics (CSA). She continued to
compete successfully with CSA until 8th grade. As Brousseau entered WHS, she joined CLASS at Oaks Christian to continue swim training and competition, as well as the WHS’s girls varsity swim team. Currently, Brousseau holds six school records: 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 breast-stroke, 200 IM, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay. Brousseau plans to attend Ohio State in the fall on a 75% scholarship: 45% athletic and 30% academic. For Christiansen, football is in his blood; literally. Not only have both Christiansen’s older brothers played football for WHS, but his father, along with the rest of the men on his dad’s side of the family have all played professionally in the NFL at one time in their lives. Starting at the age of eight, Christiansen has been playing football for the last ten years. “I love the adrenaline rush it gives me, and my friends are a big part of it too,” explained Christiansen. Having been on varsity since his sophomore year, Christiansen has earned the titles of Honorable Mention All League in ‘06-’07, First Team All League ‘07-’08, First Team All League Ventura County ‘08-’09, and offensive MVP. “I think Spencer makes good choices. He is able to stand up for what is right, even if he is standing alone,” said Coach Jim Benkert. Christiansen plans to attend Moorpark College in the fall, in hopes to transfer to a UC in two years and major in engineering or sports therapy.
