Choosing the Right Course for You Your Post-16 Qualifications
Vocational Courses (e.g. BTECs) Vocational courses are the perfect route for students who want to go to university or progress into an apprenticeship or a job. On a vocational course, you will: ● Study one subject in a lot of depth ● Experience hands-on learning ● Be assessed through coursework ● Progress to university with a level 3 qualification or into employment BTECs are vocational qualifications, rather than traditional academic courses. One of the main differences between BTECs and A-Levels is the way both are assessed. A-Levels mainly involve two years of study with exams similar to GCSEs, whereas BTECs are continually assessed through coursework and practical projects. The vast majority of universities including those within the Russell Group accept BTEC qualifications with over 25% of all applicants to university having a BTEC qualification. Inclusive Learning We believe in giving every student equal life chances as they move into adulthood. This includes supporting students into paid employment, volunteering, good health, independence, making friends and relationships as well as community inclusive. Our specialist team works with a range of students, especially those with an Educational and Health Care Plan (EHCP), supporting them to achieve the best outcomes. Traineeship A Traineeship could be ideal for you if you are aged 16-24, don’t have a level 3 qualification and need employability skills training and work experience before progressing to an Apprenticeship. 9
Have you decided what you’re doing after your GCSEs? We offer courses across a range of industries and levels, making sure that every student is on a course that is right for them and helps them grow academically, professionally and personally.
Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are a great way to get invaluable work experience alongside a qualification. These are very competitive and are perfect for ambitious students looking to get straight into the workplace, or progress onto degree apprenticeships. ● Most learning is done with the employer, in the workplace ● Minimal time spent at College for theory sessions ● Assessment through continuous performance review and exams English and Maths At West London College if you do not achieve Grade 4 or above in your English Language and/or Maths GCSEs, you will also be enrolled in English and Maths classes. This means you can study for your main course, and at the same time study for your English Language and/or Maths resit(s).
GCSE Retake Programme 16-18 year olds can enrol onto our GCSE Retake study programme to gain five GCSEs, which they can then use to progress onto a level 3 programme. Students can choose from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Maths and Business. Foundation Learning These courses support students who may not have prior qualifications to develop a wide range of employability skills and progress onto vocational courses. A-Level Hybrid Programme Students can study A-Level Maths alongside their vocational course. This two-year programme will enable you to gain important UCAS points to progress onto university. Students will get a deeper understanding of maths, which is essential for a wide range of careers such as Business, Science and Computing.
English and Maths GCSEs are essential for your progression. We want you to leave our College with a good grasp of English and Maths, to ensure you are well equipped to work effectively in the industry of your choice. ‘Those who achieve their Maths and English at FE colleges earn on average 4.2% more than those who do not.’ Cerqua & Urwin, 2016. 10
Sixth Form Centres Ealing Green College and Hammersmith & Fulham College offer dedicated sixth form Colleges which offer a full range of A-Level equivalent technical and vocational qualifications as part of your study programme. These Level 3 courses are ideal for students wishing to follow a pathway into university, higher apprenticeships or employment. We are now offering A-Level Maths that students can take alongside their main Level 3 qualification. A-level equivalent qualifications are technical courses that attract the same UCAS points as A-levels, you will generally need 4 GCSEs (9-4) including English and Maths to gain entry onto these courses.
Level 3 Courses offered include: ● A-Level Maths ● Extended Diploma in Applied Science ● Extended Diploma in Art & Design ● Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Digital Design) ● Extended Diploma in Business ● Advanced Diploma in Accounting ● Technical Diploma in Childcare & Education (Early Years Educator) ● Extended Diploma in Information Technology (ICT & Digital Skills) ● Extended Diploma in Information Technology (ICT & Games Development) ● Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production ● Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing ● Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care ● Advanced Diploma in Professional Cookery ● Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance ● Extended Diploma in Public Services ● Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching & Development ● Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science ● Extended Diploma in Travel, Tourism and Aviation
