Report on Philanthropy 2020–2021
MESSAGE FROM THE PAST BOARD CHAIR December 2021
Dear Westmark Community, When I became Board Chair of Westmark School in 2015, I knew the possibilities were endless for this extraordinary community. I had witnessed firsthand how the learning environment nurtured our students, including my sons Gabriel, Class of 2019, and Alexander, now in his senior year. I was well aware of the commitment of the trustees, who were working tirelessly on long-range strategic planning. And with Claudia Koochek as our then newly hired Head of School, I was confident she would take Westmark to new heights, integrating research more deeply into the curricula and growing the expertise of the faculty and staff. As I look back on the many accomplishments of Westmark School, I am filled with gratitude and pride. What I had envisioned at the start of my tenure has come into being: an even stronger foundation upon which Westmark can continue to thrive. Together in 2020–2021, we advanced our mission to educate and empower our students, despite the exceptional challenges posed by the pandemic over all too many months. This success against all odds was made possible in large part by your philanthropy. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your generosity. Earlier this year, I stepped down from my role as Board Chair and passed the baton to my friend and fellow trustee James Kilcourse. Under Jim and Claudia’s leadership, the future of Westmark School is bright as ever. Even long after I watch Alex graduate at the end of this school year, I will be indebted to this caring and compassionate community.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL December 2021
Dear Westmark Family and Friends, Welcoming you back to campus was our greatest joy in 2020–2021. Although we had successfully adapted to remote learning, conducted parent chats from afar, hosted celebrations virtually, and came up with myriad ways to stay connected, we can all agree on this: it is uniquely heartwarming to teach, learn, create, perform, play, laugh, and engage with one another face to face—even if masked! So what a thrill it was to greet you in person at last! Our spirits lifted as our classrooms and courtyards buzzed with energy once again. We cheered for our artists and athletes as they returned to the stage and sports field. Behind the scenes, our teachers continued to deepen their instructional expertise, while a task force continually evolved our protocols in keeping with the highest of public-health standards. Our safe return to campus was a humbling achievement; we could not have done it without you. So first, I thank you for partnering with us to prioritize health and safety while continuing to meet our shared goal to inspire and celebrate our students. In this Report on Philanthropy, we acknowledge, too, the remarkable generosity of our donor community in 2020–2021. Without this vital support, Westmark couldn’t have delivered on our mission with as great an impact. As you read the publication, I hope each and every one of you feels my gratitude for your many sacrifices, your outpouring of love, and your unwavering dedication to our students and families, our faculty and staff, and one another.
Claudia Koochek Head of School

FINANCIAL STATEMENT July 1, 2020–June 30, 2021
“I am happy to report that Westmark School’s financial condition is excellent. This year, nearly 80% of all revenue sources were spent on Westmark’s academic programs. The School finished the year with an operating surplus that was further enhanced by the forgiveness of a federally funded loan of $1.7M granted to Westmark during COVID-19. This, coupled with revenue for a major gifts initiative, has made Westmark’s financial future very bright.” — Steve Taylor, Director of Finance and Operations
