Silver Sunday
Coffee Morning (with sketching) for Art Lovers
“During my time as Mayor, I have met older Londoners from every walk of life and have seen first-hand the contribution they make to our great city. It is unacceptable for an older Londoner to feel lonely or isolated - at City Hall, I’ve made it clear that bringing communities and people of all ages and backgrounds together is a key priority. Silver Sunday is a great opportunity for Londoners to get to know their older neighbours and to celebrate the energy, character and diversity older people bring to everyday life in the capital.” Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London 20

Health and wellbeing Getting to the heart of a good night’s sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is a practice that many seek to conquer. As people get older, the body experiences a change in sleeping patterns and some people have great difficulties getting enough sleep to feel refreshed in the morning. The NHS refers to this lack of sleep as insomnia, a problem that affects one in three people in the UK. It is particularly prevalent in older people. The most common causes of sleep deprivation range from stress and anxiety to poor sleeping habits like long periods of napping during the day as well as certain prescriptions or over the counter medication. Noise pollution from late night bars, cafes, concerts and even sirens can also make it hard to fall asleep. 24
Why sleep matters Sleepless nights can eventually take their toll on mental and physical health. Depriving the body of sleep has been linked to depression and diabetes. It can also lead to accidents and injuries as well as affect memory, because sleep cycles usually give your brain a chance to consolidate memories.
Good sleeping habits Establishing good sleeping habits is an important first step to help regain control over sleep. Age UK provides advice to help older people manage this change in sleeping patterns. Tips include:
Health and wellbeing • establishing

a preand post-sleep routine and sticking to it • making sure that your bed and bedding are comfortable and avoid cluttering your bedroom • avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol in the evening • not eating a heavy meal late at night • cutting out daytime naps • keeping your bedroom cool and dark • banning TV and computers from the bedroom. There are also certain calming exercises that can help with sleepless nights. Yoga has often been hailed as giving the body the rest it craves. Gentle poses,
breathing techniques and meditation can help promote restful sleep patterns. There is even a form of yoga designed to help encourage good sleep. Yoga Nidra involves lying down and being talked through a meditation as well as visualisation and breathing routes that plunges the body into a state of ‘conscious deep sleep’.
Help is at hand Westminster City Council works with a number of partners that run activities and workshops to help you with sleep. If you do have trouble sleeping, speak to your GP about the services available to help manage and improve your sleeping patterns.

Battle of Waterloo Hero remembered Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Westminster school children are learning about a forgotten hero from the Battle of Waterloo. Samuel Godley may not be a household name, but the bravery displayed by this Battle of Waterloo veteran pays tribute to unknown soldiers throughout British military history, whose stories are too easily forgotten. Originally from Whitwell, Derbyshire, Godley joined the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards in 1808. Their principal duty was to protect the monarch, then King George III, but they were also called to serve in the Household Brigade against Napoleon in 1812. Godley’s service came at a particularly tumultuous time in British history, as conflict in mainland Europe was set against a backdrop of 28
economic turmoil in the lead up to the 1815 Corn Laws. Although their duties had historically been largely ceremonial, in Regency London the Life Guards were charged with policing Mayfair and Belgravia, dissuading and disbanding rioters.
During the Battle of Waterloo, the Life Guards broke the French cuirassiers’ lines and found themselves cut off from the main force. Godley was struck, lost his horse and fractured his skull, but continued to fight on regardless. A comrade in arms, Major Thomas Playford, writing afterwards said: “One man, Samuel Godley, had his horse shot and his helmet knocked off and he raved about the field of battle on foot until he met a cuirassier, whom he slew and rode off on his horse to new scenes of conflict. I saw Godley perform that daring exploit which is recorded of him by his regiment.”
Westminster Remembers
Despite suffering a fractured skull, Godley survived the battle, and continued his service in the Household Cavalry until 1826. Following his discharge, Godley earned a living in the Baker Street bazaar for six years, before passing away in 1832. Remarkably, Playford’s account of Godley is the only first-hand source we have of his feat, and his illustration the only image of the act.
Saving Samuel Godley Schoolchildren across Westminster have been learning about Samuel Godley’s story thanks to work led by Westminster City Council’s Archives Centre. The project, entitled “Saving Samuel Godley,” was awarded £82,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and National Lottery Players to provide school resources, local museum visits and community talks on Godley’s life and times. The culmination of the project saw the restoration
of Godley’s grave at St John’s Wood Church cemetery. This is followed by a dramatic recreation of Godley’s life by Barrow Hill Primary School, St Saviours
Church of England Primary School and Westminster Cathedral Catholic Primary School at neighbouring Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Top of the Shop Community Award Winner Ellen Bridgewater talks “Little Bingo Club” What started out as a small gathering of residents playing bingo, soon turned into a must do social event for the residents of Elgin Estate. This was thanks to local volunteer Ellen Bridgewater who was recognised at this year’s Westminster Community Awards for bringing the community together. Ellen said: “When the Elgin Estate was refurbished 30 years ago, my friend Rhoda and I thought it would be nice to have an evening Bingo group. A place where residents could socialise. When Rhoda sadly passed away some time ago, I took it over, lock, stock and barrel. “You can instantly see what Little Bingo Club means to attendees when you see the lengths some go to get here. We have some very frail residents who make the trip, and some arrive by Dial-a32
Ride. New faces come in all the time. We’ve created something really special here. A safe place, where people can come, have a laugh and make some new friends.”

She said: “As long as we have enough to keep up the social aspect, that’ll do. You don’t have to have funding to do something like this, or to see it grow. The people who come know that it’s all theirs for the taking and they all chip in to make it what it is. I encourage everyone to come along and join in the fun.” Ellen

I chose to do both. I went to India, married my wife and then we settled in London. Westminster truly felt like our home away from home. I have worked here for 49 years, 24 years manufacturing medical equipment and 15 years maintaining them at Hammersmith Hospital.
I retired at 69 but keep myself busy. I am the chairperson of The Patient Group at Health @ the Stowe where I enjoy meeting new people. I have diabetes but this has not stopped me from enjoying life in Westminster. There’s a lot of support available so I encourage everyone to get active and live for the moment.

“I was attracted to the hustle and bustle of Westminster. Bayswater was popular with students at the time and it was very different from where I grew up. It was during this time that I had to make a decision. Do I go back to India and get married or do I stay and settle in London.
