It is with great pleasure that we introduce the 2016 Paddington Festival programme. Our 2015 review proved that locally organised festival events are much liked. What we had not realised however, is that the Lebanese Festival, held on Paddington Green, is one of the biggest community events in Europe – with nearly 9,000 people attending on the day. Paddington Festival’s underlying principles remain constant - promoting local talent, volunteers and performers who organise and perform at ward-based festivals, the Film Festival and Paddington Book Festival from late June until September. In addition, there is a diverse programme of dance, music, sport, children’s play, youth and older people’s activities that contribute to the vibrancy of historic Paddington. In November 2015 we held an awesome ‘GALA Awards’ ceremony at Paddington Arts, at which 38 people were recognised for their special contributions to the local community. We hope to build on that success and will be inviting ideas and nominations for similar awards this year. The organisers of SouthWest Fest in Pimlico also convinced us of the value of appointing a part-time co-ordinator Liz Thorpe-Tracey. Liz is a local resident and has been beavering away, introducing weekend taster sessions called ‘Maida Hill Inspires Me’. She has also helped ensure that we have an ‘Irish Day’
4 | Paddington Festival 2016 | paddingtonfestival.co.uk
in the programme and she will be there to witness the return of the Big Dance Bus on Sunday 10 July.
This year’s festival focuses on happiness and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
Our investment in community values and talent is paying off. Our well respected dance and youth steelpan bands are an example. But none of this is possible without the enthusiasm of local people – performers, volunteers and agencies who support local interests and entertain the audiences. We are indeed rich in talent. We would, of course, like to thank our festival sponsors and supporters – without whom the Paddington Festival would not exist. Cllr Barrie Taylor Ward Councillor for Queen’s Park
Enjoy Irish music and dance performances, food and drinks.
Watch diverse local and professional talent on the main stage, with stalls and entertainment dotted throughout the park.

Elaine Harkin from Queen’s Park has volunteered at the WECH Festival for the past 10 years. This year she is organising the festival in her new role as Community Development Manager. “This year there will be a climbing wall, bouncy castle, food and music. We’re getting creative to see what we can do that doesn’t cost money, so our volunteers are putting their heads together to come up with ideas for energetic sporting activities such as football.
“It’s a great chance for people to get to know each other and have fun. One of my best memories over the past 10 years volunteering at the festival is a space hopper race where children, parents and grandparents all got involved and everyone was laughing together. “Life’s tough for a lot of people so little things like the festival help to lift their spirits. It’s a stress free day and people can forget about their worries for a while. “It will be a day you won’t forget.” “I’ve volunteered at the festival in lots of different ways. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty so arrive early on the day to help set up the gazebos and carry out the risk assessments. I’ve also worked on the stalls and one year even did a festival BBQ. “It will be a day you won’t forget so come along and enjoy the atmosphere.”

Paddington Film Festival with Maida Hill Place
Deborah Lauder has volunteered at the Film Festival for three years.
“I help with promotion in the lead up to the festival and with lots of different activities on the day to make sure everything runs smoothly.
“Volunteering is so much fun. Our community is really friendly and you can see how much people in the local area appreciate it. “The part I enjoy the most is seeing families have a good time and helping to choose the films for the programme. My top pick this year is Kung Fu Panda because the kids really enjoy it and there’ll be a great atmosphere.”

Tiffany Kearton is the Director of Paddington Farm. “Paddington Farm is a 43-acre organic farm in Glastonbury, which was originally set up by the residents of Paddington to give local people the chance to access and experience the countryside. We also work with local services such as the Westminster Play Service, Westbourne Family Centre and Paddington Arts so that local young people can come and find out more about the countryside. “We were initially set up as an organic dairy farm but are now a residential centre offering accommodation for groups, families and individuals who want an affordable rural experience or to have a holiday in the countryside.
Songs and rhymes followed by a simple mask-making craft activity, as part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2016.
“We show everyone where food comes from, let them feed the farm animals and get stuck in with gardening. It’s really great for people as they tell us how happy they are to see the countryside. Some visitors have never been outside a big city so it’s great to see them run around in the country and get really excited. Some of them don’t want to leave!

“I think that the Paddington Festival is something really positive that brings all the local communities in the area together. I used to live in the Walterton and Elgin Estate, so it’s great to see the area being used in such a positive way. We’ll be supporting the festival and hopefully help set up a cider festival for next year!”

Paddington Film Festival with A2Dominion
Rosie Holloway is a 22year-old singer and guitar player from Queen’s Park. Rosie is recording her first record this summer, watch this space! “I sing in a sort of jazzy style. I write songs about my life and perform covers of really great pop songs. It’s the kind of thing people sit back and relax to. A favourite is my version of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together with my intricate guitar accompaniment. I also love everything by Amy Winehouse. “I performed at Paddington Festival last year and can’t wait for this year’s event. There was such a great vibe, it was really sunny and everyone had a lot of fun. There’s a delicious selection of food and the location by the canal is beautiful. “Paddington Festival is a positive thing for the community that brings everyone together. We need more events like this!” Rosie will perform at Queen’s Park Festival. Find out more about Rosie at rosieholloway.com.
