2 Welcome
A special Silver Sunday edition
2022 marks ten years since Silver Sunday first honoured our older generations! To celebrate this milestone anniversary, founder Christabel Flight, Silver Sunday associates, supporters and many of those that have held events throughout the decade gathered in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour at City Hall to raise a glass of champers, enjoy some cake and look back at the many ways the day has continued to bring our older communities together. This year we have more events than ever and there is something for everyone to enjoy. Turn to page 14 for the full list of what’s happening near you.
“Silver Sunday is a day that offers us all the opportunity to focus on older people’s contributions to our communities and to our society. Different generations gather together across the UK to celebrate their elders and to make new friends, through a variety of fun, free activities that range from tea parties to curling to Zumba dancing. As a member of Silver Sunday’s target audience, I can honestly say that it is a completely brilliant initiative.” –HM The Queen Consort

Joe is a 67-year-old and lives in a one-bedroom council property. He has significant health conditions including no use of his left arm. Let’s get active
Regular physical activity benefits both the body and mind. It can:
• improve bone and muscle strength and increases balance, flexibility and fitness.
• reduce the risk of depression, cognitive decline and delay the onset of dementia and simply makes you feel good!
Just taking a short break from sitting, by doing 3-4 minutes of light physical movement, such as walking or stretching or even participating in safe organised local activity, will help ease your muscles and improve blood circulation and muscle activity.
• for older adults in particular it has been shown to improve balance and help to prevent falls and injuries.
To find out more and start your journey to being physically active, go to active.westminster. gov.uk or call 020 7641 1444 – residents over 60 can enjoy a FREE casual swim with an ActiveWestminster Card.

It’s really important for people of all ages and abilities to be as active as possible.
It’s hard for us to get back into the routine of physical activity and have the confidence to be active. It’s even harder for people who don’t usually do a lot of physical activity to get started.
• reduce high blood pressure, help manage weight and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and various cancers.
Over the last few years we are all a little bit guilty of sitting down more, moving less and not taking as much exercise.
• help give our days a bit of structure or routine and be a way to stay in contact with family and friends.
Renewable energy
Your food waste will be used to create renewable energy used to generate electricity to power the national grid and heat for homes.

Your new food waste recycling service
Food waste will also be transformed into a biofertiliser, which will be used on farmland to grow more food.
The food waste recycling service is expanding across Westminster during 2022. You will soon receive your roll of liners, kitchen bin and outdoor food waste bin.
Wasting less
Food waste generates harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Using this service will help reduce waste and tackle climate change.
Cllr Hamza Taouzzale has had a busy few months at the beginning of his term, and with his high ambitions, he isn’t going to get any quieter any time soon
8
Four months later he was elected as the member of the Youth Parliament for Westminster, during which time he was instrumental in ensuring that Westminster joined the British Youth Council, thus allowing our Youth MPs to visit and speak in Parliament.
Hamza was elected to Westminster City Council in 2018, representing Queen’s Park Ward. At 22, he is the youngest ever councillor to be elected to the City and the first ever Muslim Lord Mayor of Westminster.

Having always lived in Westminster, Hamza’s introduction to the council was in October 2015 where he became a member of the Westminster Youth Council.
From sitting behind the young Royals at the Platinum Jubilee Party at the Palace to tree planting, raising flags and getting to know the community, Cllr Taouzzale is making the most of his year as Lord Mayor.

Since becoming Lord Mayor in May, the first few months of his term have involved events that will go down in London’s history books. At the Platinum Jubilee celebration he lit the Jubilee Beacon at Paddington Recreation Ground, attended many of the city’s 50+ street parties, and sat amongst the young Royals on The Mall at the Party at the Palace. Quickly followed was the momentous 50 years of Pride celebrations, which included just one of several flag-raising ceremonies at City Hall.

“Silver Sunday was the idea of one of my predecessors, Christabel Flight, a decade ago. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, giving many older Westminster residents a great deal of joy. The past couple of years have been tough for our senior residents so I’m looking forward to taking part in this year’s events and getting around to the care homes to meet everyone.”

Outside of his council life, Cllr Taouzzale is a trustee of a handful of local Westminster charities and sits on the John Lyons Grants committee. During his free time, the Lord Mayor is an avid Chelsea FC supporter!

Music to make your heart sing
Music really can make our hearts sing, and if you have always fancied having a tinkle on a piano, but never quite got round to learning to read music, or started and haven’t played in a while, then there’s no time like the present!
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220920131156-3d0a16ef6a768311e99913b428d27a5c/v1/036be8803f9f7076e821eab4863a33f5.jpeg)
Learning an instrument later in life can offer numerous health, wellbeing and even social benefits
10
Do you remember when some of the greatest music was being played for the first time? Elvis or The Beatles perhaps? Maybe your feet start tapping when you hear jazz, your air guitar comes to life at the sound of rock music, and you can’t help but sing along to a good ballad.
DecPLAY is an easy-to-use online platform that aims to make the whole process of playing the piano simple. There is a vibrant and thriving online community to meet friends and access support from a dedicated team.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220920131156-3d0a16ef6a768311e99913b428d27a5c/v1/78a3f68b54b9fa28039a12ffaada97e3.jpeg)
Harry, aged 90, was able to play a full tune within just 30 minutes of starting and continues to build his repertoire.
What is DecPLAY?
Mike tried to learn piano briefly as a boy, but soon gave it up after struggling with the traditional music. Now, six decades later, Mike has rediscovered the joy of piano playing through and is learning fast – alongside his grandchildren.
11
Designed with wellbeing in mind, the DecPLAY course is also accessible to those with conditions such as arthritis, low sight and dyslexia. Named ‘DecPLAY’ after its creator Declan Cosgrove, the course is already a hit with people aged 50 – 90+.
Following a stroke, Jean, also in her 90s, had to start learning piano from scratch and found she was no longer able to follow traditional methods. The accessibility of DecPLAY meant that Jean was able to pick up the piano again with ease.
