New Volleyball Court at Academy Sport
FREE SPORT IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
Play on the same sand that Team GB and other top athletes have competed on, by heading down to the new urban beach volleyball court at Academy Sport. The sand came from the London 2012 test event at Horse Guard’s Parade.
Eight to 19-year-olds can enjoy FREE activities all year round through the Neighbourhood Sports Programme. Take part in everything from boxing and multi-sports to parkour and cheerleading.

We want you to benefit from living in an Olympic city and have developed 12 ways you can get involved in sport and leisure in your community in the run-up to London 2012. Neighbourhood Sports Programme Enjoy 100 hours of free sport and activities every week if you are aged eight to 19. See pages 20 and 21. Outdoor sports pitches There are over 20 outdoor sports pitches in Westminster, many of which are managed by CityWest Homes. They are free to use on a turn up and play basis and great for enjoying a kick-about with friends. There are also club activities and coaching courses throughout the year.

Competitions There are lots of opportunities to get involved in competitive sport across the city. Call 020 7641 2012 for details. Unity in the Community football tournament Paddington Recreation Ground Saturday 18th February 2012 Registration 9.30am – u12 mixed and u14 boys (10am kick off) 1.30pm – u16 and u19 boys (2pm kick off) • seven-a-side (up to 10 players in a squad) • maximum of 10 teams per age group • places are filled on a first come first served basis.
Unity in the Community football league Thursdays from 6-9.30pm at Academy Sport: • u14s and u16s • up to 10 teams per age group. Each team will play each other twice over 18 weeks and take part in a cup competition • games will be 12 minutes with two halves • 6-a-side: maximum 10 players in the squad each week • the league is FREE • prizes for winners and runners up. Cycling is a great way to get around London – it’s quick, convenient, environmentally friendly and keeps you fit. And many journeys are quicker by bike than by public transport.

Banana Kids Camp
EDUTAIN meaning to EDUcate and enterTAIN, is a sports and arts activity programme for young people aged 8 to 13. The programme helps young people to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve and make a positive contribution to their community.
Jubilee Sports Centre offers a half-term kids camp run by qualified workers for ages 8 to 15. Your children can get involved in fun activities and games including swimming, football and trips to the zoo, museums and other local attractions. Ask at reception for details.

Parkour camp
Parkour is a new and innovative sport, where you move your body from one point to another efficiently and effectively, overcoming obstacles around you.
You will be shown the techniques and moves you need to perfect the art of movement and can receive an AQA Unit 1 and/or 2 accreditation.
London’s first and the world’s largest purposebuilt outdoor managed parkour facility provides the ideal place for all ages to practice parkour in a safe environment.

Free NHS health checks are available for anyone aged between 40 to 74 in local pharmacies and GP practices. A health professional will check your blood pressure, height, weight and cholesterol levels. Kickstart and Mini Kickstart Mini Kickstart is a free six week healthy lifestyle programme for toddlers aged 2 to 5 and their families, run by a qualified dietician and nutritionist. Sport and leisure volunteering programme
Aged 14 to 25? Why not make all the activities you are doing count towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award? Complete four challenges once a week for three to six months to achieve the award. The challenges are in four different areas:
If you are interested in becoming a coach, referee, administrator or instructor you can receive support in finding a role that matches your skills, interests and availability, along with funding for training courses and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.

The Westminster Sports Unit have teamed up with Volunteer Centre Westminster to help and support people to volunteer in sport.

Sports coaching courses
There is a range of training opportunities for education professionals, including Continued Professional Development (CPD) and Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) programmes.
There’s a great programme of free and low cost courses to help you get involved in sport.
CPD is provided by the Westminster School Sports Partnership for teachers across Westminster and includes teacher support, conferences, specific whole school INSET training and PE co-ordinator days. Other programmes available are: • • • •

The Mayor of London’s Skill Legacy Fund Up until March 2012, the Mayor of London will be investing in a lasting legacy for sport post-2012. This means that you could receive up to 75% of the cost of your training in exchange for volunteering in London, through the Mayor of London’s National Skills Academy. You must be a London resident and able to commit voluntary hours back to community sport. You will need to log your volunteer hours on an Active Passport – visit www.activepassport.com to apply. You can apply for your subsidy at www.sportactivensa.co.uk/mayorslegacy
