Welcome Welcome to Summer in the City, packed full of all the exciting activities and events taking place for children and young people this summer.
London is a great place to spend the summer holiday, with loads going on for everyone; children, teenagers, parents and the rest of the family. There are film classes, summer parties, nature trips, dance classes, carnivals and more.
Rahima Begum
Member of the UK Youth Parliament – Hammersmith & Fulham
There are lots of ways to get into sport as well, whether you like tennis, cricket, kayaking or basketball, there’s something for everyone. There’s a bit of a cycle theme to this summer, with the Tour de France coming to London in July and the chance to cycle the traffic-free streets of London at RideLondon FreeCycle in August. Activities are listed in date order under themes including family events, libraries, sport and leisure and play. Many of the listings are open to residents of all three boroughs, unless otherwise stated. All activities are free or low-cost and, if you live in Westminster, show your Westminster City Save card for even more discounts.
Amrit Tamana
Member of the UK Youth Parliament – the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
Everyone should be able to make the most of summer in the city and most of the activities listed have provision for children with disabilities and learning difficulties. There are also specific activities for young carers, as well as a dedicated disability section with specialised activities and who to contact if you need more information. We love London in the summer and hope this guide makes summer 2014 your best one yet. Soleen Rashed
Youth MP – City of Westminster

activities for Children and young people with disabilities There are lots of inclusive activities in this year’s guide and the activities on the following pages are specifically for children and young people with disabilities. Look out for the following symbol throughout Summer in the City: Disability access Providers will strive to cater for your child’s needs. If your child has a disability, a learning difficulty, or additional needs, it is always a good idea to contact the provider in advance to make sure that they can meet your child’s needs effectively. You may wish to see if it is possible to arrange a pre-visit to the site of the activity. A small number of specialist projects require referrals from a social worker – please contact the Children with Disabilities Team in your borough regarding this (contact details opposite). The cost may be able to be met through your social worker or via direct payments.

Become a foster carer like Victoria “I love them like my own, which I never thought was possible,” Empowering young women to have the confidence and ability to achieve in their lives – in spite of a tough start – has become a kind of mantra for Victoria. The foster carer, who reveals she had a ‘grand idea of having an orphanage and making a real contribution to society’ – is determined that the two teenagers in her care are not limited by the challenges they faced early on. “It is about teaching them to love and respect other people, and have self-respect and love for themselves,” explains Victoria. When the teens turned up at her door one evening, Victoria could immediately see the fear and uncertainty in their faces. They
had been in different foster homes already, and were only supposed to stay with Victoria for two weeks. But that was over four years ago, and Victoria – herself a mother and grandmother – believes there has been a real change in their behaviour. Both girls are in education, and the elder sister has already gained some GCSEs with the aim to reach higher education. “Because of the girls’ chaotic early upbringing, I do feel they didn’t have a childhood,” points out Victoria. “I want to hear them laughing, and for these two, stability, care and structure have been really important.” “I love them like my own, which I never thought was possible,” adds Victoria. “It has been rewarding and the girls perceive their placement as their home”.
