Residential waste and recycling collections We do not anticipate major changes to waste and recycling collection times. However, a few recycling collections in the West End, Mayfair, St James’s and Knightsbridge are likely to start at 7am rather than the current time of 8am. We will write to you if your street is affected. Please put your waste and recycling out at the beginning of your time band to avoid missing your collection. Please check your time band ahead of the Games at westminster.gov.uk/rubbish or call 020 7641 2000. There may be unforeseen changes to collections. For the latest updates on changes during the Games please follow us on twitter @CityofWestminster or visit westminster.gov.uk/olympics to sign up to our enewsletter. Parking Some resident parking bays will be suspended during the Diamond Jubilee and the Games. We are working with Transport for London to minimise the number of suspensions and where possible will seek to provide some additional space. If you are affected we will write to you to let you know. There will also be on-street signage. Further information will be posted on westminster.gov.uk/olympics as soon as it’s available. Using the parks St. James’s Park The Mall will host the start and finish of the Road Race Cycling events (28th and 29th July), the Olympic and Paralympic Marathon (5th and 12th August) and the Race Walk competition (11th August). Horse Guards Parade will host the Beach Volleyball competition. Access to the venue will be from The Mall and St James’s Park, with some areas of the park to the north and east of the lake closed to the public during this time. Hyde Park Hyde Park will host the largest Live Site in London, the London 2012 Shop and the Triathlon (4th and 7th August) and Marathon Swimming (9th and 10th August) competitions. The park will remain open throughout the Games but some areas such as the Triathlon and Marathon Swimming venue on the north bank of the Serpentine Lake will only be open to event ticket holders. For further information, please visit www.royalparks.gov.uk/london2012
Get around more easily by planning ahead
Travel in Westminster will be affected during the Games
This year brings the largest sporting events in the world to the UK – the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Because we’re hosting these large events, you’d expect roads and public transport to be much busier than usual. We’re providing this information to help you understand where the travel hotspots will be and how your journey could be affected.
Olympic Games: 27 July – 12 August 2012 Paralympic Games: 29 August – 9 September 2012
The Olympic and Paralympic Route Networks (ORN/PRN) This network of roads connecting venues, accommodation and transport hubs across London will be open to all general traffic. Some changes to these roads will be in place to ensure reliable journeys for the Games Family (athletes, officials, workers and the media). Vehicles that park or stop illegally on the ORN/PRN will be issued with a fine and could be taken to a vehicle pound. Venues Central London will be particularly busy during Summer 2012 with some of its most iconic locations and streets transformed into Olympic and Paralympic sporting and cultural venues. With so much going on in Westminster the roads, paths and parks will look different every hour of every day. There will be restrictions around all venues for security and operational reasons. In addition, Westminster City Council will be consulting with the local community on proposed changes to parking around Lord’s Cricket Ground. If there is support for these proposals they would discourage spectators from parking in the area and help minimise disruption. Spectator walking routes will be very busy before and after events. Live Sites at Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square Between 28 July and 11 August BT London Live Hyde Park will show live coverage of the Olympic Games. Thousands of spectators will visit the site for free each day. Ticketed Opening and Closing Ceremony Celebration Concerts will take place on 27 July and 12 August – the area will also be busy on these days. Transport for London
From 29 August to 9 September Paralympic events will be shown on screens at BT London Live Trafalgar Square from 9am to 10pm daily.

On event days, race routes and surrounding roads will be closed to traffic but emergency and local access will be maintained as far as is possible. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the routes so you should plan your journeys particularly carefully on these days. In Westminster road events take place on the ORN so on these days the Games vehicles will use alternative routes. The necessary traffic management measures on the alternative route will have less impact than those on the ORN. Torch Relay The Olympic Torch Relay will pass through Westminster on the evening of Thursday 26 July and a concert will take place in Hyde Park. There will be a rolling road closure as it travels through the borough. The Torch will also travel along the Thames on 27 July on its final journey to the Olympic Stadium. On both days large crowds are expected to line the route.
Driving Drivers will encounter restricted turns, changes to parking and loading facilities and changes to some traffic signals associated with the ORN/PRN. Games Lanes will operate on some parts of the ORN/PRN. The Lanes will be clearly marked and when operational will not be open to general traffic. They will only be available for accredited vehicles and the adjacent lane will remain open to general traffic. To avoid a fine, don’t drive on Games Lanes when they are operational. Drivers will not be able to use Constitution Hill, Birdcage Walk, Horse Guards Road, Marlborough Road, The Mall or travel westbound over Westminster Bridge. In addition through-traffic access to Whitehall will be restricted from 6am to midnight during the Olympic Games. There will also be changes to parking and local access around the Games Family hotels on Park Lane. Local buses Many buses will operate more frequently and there will be some diversions as a result of temporary road changes. Detailed information will be available closer to the Games. Walking & cycling Walking and cycling could be your best way to get around during the Games. Whilst events are taking place in and around Hyde Park and St James’s Park some walking and cycling routes will be affected. In some places stewards and barriers will help manage the high number of spectators. Plan your journeys To find out more about how roads and public transport will be affected and how to get around more easily visit GetAheadoftheGames.com, follow us on Twitter @GAOTG or call 0843 222 1234.* *You pay no more than 5p per minute if calling from a BT landline. There may be a connection charge. Charges from mobiles or other landline providers may vary. All information correct at time of going to print March 2012.
