Welcome
It is a pleasure to introduce this first edition of the Paddington Festival 2013 programme. As councillors in Harrow Road, Queen’s Park and Westbourne we are proud to have shown our preference for investing in the talents and aspirations of our local community. The Paddington Festival intends to further harness the qualities and skills of our local agencies, volunteers and local businesses. Activities and events listed in this programme show the range and diversity of skills and talents that exist here in Paddington. You may recall that last year was the Cultural Olympiad and many Londoners took part in those celebrations. We also live on the doorstep of one of the largest festivals in the world – the Notting Hill Carnival. And whilst we may not be the Edinburgh Festival we intend to follow their tradition by creating the widest possible opportunities for
local people to take part in a summer of activities that will hopefully form another part of our local traditions. We are rightly proud of you and the co-operation shown by local organisations in the formation of the programme of events. All we can ask is that you, your friends, your families and your carers – young and old – show support for the Paddington Festival by taking part in the activities and events. We would also like to thank our festival sponsors who have helped to make the very first Paddington Festival a possibility.

Volunteer profile
The Muslim Pilgrimage
Colin Vidal, 34, lives in Paddington and is the Lead Volunteer and Stage Manager for the Paddington Festival. “I’ve been a volunteer at Paddington Arts for nine years. I’ve been involved a lot longer as a performer from the age of seven when I was a scrawny little boy pretending to do drama. I was re-introduced to Paddington Arts through a friend, and have since been doing dance, drama, singing and steel pans, a bit of everything.
“My festival tip is to get involved. Whether you are sitting down watching and listening or taking part in an event or a workshop, simply get involved.” “I think I commit more to Paddington Arts than my own job. I do nine to five at my job and then I am at Paddington Arts from 6-9pm on Mondays to Thursdays and Fridays if there is an event like Milkshake Disco. If there’s a weekend event I am also involved. “My role at the festival is to ensure we have the right equipment for each location, construct the dance stage or platform, set up the seating areas, manage a team of volunteers and organise the sound equipment. “I first got involved in the festival as a performer, playing steel pans in Little Venice in 2009 and on the Harrow Road in 2011. This year I’m looking forward to just seeing what people bring to the table. Within Paddington you never know what you’re going to get, and it’s always going to be different. “My festival tip is to get involved. Whether you are sitting down watching and listening or taking part in an event or a workshop, simply get involved.”

Angie Durrance, 58, from Queen’s Park is involved in organising the Queen’s Park Festival, taking place on 10th August as part of the Paddington Festival. “I’ve taken on many roles including helping to coordinate the volunteers and organising the stalls that surround the park.
“We try to involve as many people as possible whether it’s having a say in what entertainment and activities they want, to helping to set up and run things. It’s a volunteer-led event.” “We’ve tried out different things throughout the years and have found that the more you involve local people, the more successful the event is. There’s such an amazing turn out now and a diverse mix of people. You just have to look round on the day and you see lots of faces enjoying themselves and all the hard work is worthwhile.” 14

Your local residents AMCs are working for you In 2011, CityWest Homes launched four area management committees (AMCs) across our estates. The committees are made up of local residents who decide service priorities, ensure we’re tackling issues of concern and assess applications to the community chest fund. With an annual fund of £10,000 for each area, the north and west have allocated £35,000 over the past two years on exciting residents’ groups, community projects and events across Westminster. During the Paddington Festival, the AMCs will be sponsoring a variety of events for all CityWest Homes residents to enjoy. There will be something for everyone, including:
Ping pong tournaments Street festivals Beach parties Summer pantomimes. To find out more, please contact your local CityWest Homes estate office or check the bulletin boards for details.

Natisha Williams, 15, will perform at the Paddington Festival at the Maida Hill Market event on 13th July. “I am performing in a street dance group from Paddington Arts. I love dance. I started dancing when I was two or three at the Royal Academy of Dance. “I joined Paddington Arts when I was seven-yearsold. I started with ballet and street dance. I also took steel pan and drama classes. I liked everybody and some of my friends from school came here. “I want to pursue a career in dance. I have watched my cousin who studies at Italia Conti and has performed in Billy Elliot. The festival is a good thing as many young people are lazy, like me, but not anymore because I got involved with dance. When they see us dancing they’ll probably want to dance too as it’s quite a cool thing. I’m looking forward to the festival to help me be more confident when I’m performing. I am just happy I will be dancing so I can show everybody my talent.”

Glenda Jaxson is a stand-up comedian and will host the Maida Hill Market Festival on 13th July. “There’s going to be a variety of acts such as young people performing street dance, to Irish dancing, magic and singing. I am there to welcome and get the audience in the mood to help the acts perform. I am happy giving something back to the community. “I have been doing comedy for over 15 years. I started accidentally by accompanying my friend to a comedy course for moral support, I was slipping her lines and then the tutor encouraged me to have a go. I went on to gain a certificate at The Comedy School. “My first live performance show was at Willesden Empire. There were top comedians within the black circuit like Angela Martin and 1,000 people in the audience. I went with my friend and husband who did not know I would be performing. I told them I was going to the toilet and then to their surprise they saw me up on stage and performing. “My comedy is just solid me, what I like, what I don’t like. My kids have come in handy: the way they talk, the way they walk, their trousers… “At the festival I’m looking forward to seeing the up and coming talent we’ve got in the area - we need that entertainment. The festival helps us to get together. We need to celebrate and bring culture into the area. We need to get together more often and have a laugh. It also helps generations to mix as the young people think we’re boring and the older people think the younger people are rude. Although we’re not and they’re not! “At the Jubilee party last year, people came out of their houses. We didn’t know half the people in the street and got to meet each other – you get an amazing mix of people.” Paddington Festival 2013 • www.paddingtonfestival.co.uk

Neighbourhood Funds in action
Queen’s Park Social Enterprise Workshops
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Youth Engagement Music Project
The Queen’s Park councillors recently funded two social enterprise workshops for local community groups and young people with the aim of developing new business ideas, accessing funding and creating local jobs. Participants were able to develop ideas for their own social enterprise under the guidance of industry professional, Gary Parker from management consultancy, CNT Associates.
Earlier this year, members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) worked with 60 young people from the Harrow Road, Queen’s Park, Westbourne and Church Street wards to produce and perform a concert for their friends and family. The aim was to help the young people improve their team work and communication. It was also a chance for young people from different areas and backgrounds to come together.
Eraj Miah and Leo Baquiri from Phoenix Youth Club were two of the younger residents who took part. “We were so impressed with the excellent package of information that Gary provided for us that we are now deciding what type of business we want to establish. “Our experience of running a Social Enterprise selling Christmas trees at St. Luke’s Church has meant we are now drafting a business plan for this year. This was a brilliant workshop.”
Alec Haylor from the RPO coordinated the youth ensemble and says: “The young people came together to share the musical styles that they are passionate about. These styles were used to create a series of pieces that were developed, rehearsed and shared with friends and family. “The project saw participants from all walks of life, from local schools and arts groups, to local youth centres coming together with the express purpose of making music.”
How to apply Visit westminster.gov.uk/funds to find out more or email areaforums@westminster.gov.uk to apply. All projects must be completed by the end of March 2014. Paddington Festival 2013 • www.paddingtonfestival.co.uk
