Chetan Kumar’s illustrations have been spotted around central London on theatre posters, websites, in magazines and even on skin – tattoos that is. Inspired by London and his many travels, Chetan studied illustration at the University of Westminster. “I’ve always wanted to work in art. A teacher really pushed me forward in secondary school and I began applying for illustration internships. The internships I did were invaluable as I learnt how other illustrators work and plan their days and I made good contacts.
“If I were to give advice, I’d say try everything in school and you’ll eventually find that thing that clicks. You have to be patient as a lot of industries are tough to get into. I get huge satisfaction from my job, particularly when people appreciate my work and hang it in their house.” Inspired by Chetan to get into work or build up your skills? Facing abuse at home AND PROBLEMS AT SCHOOL, Dale was at breaking point. a Savile ROW tailor
brought him back from the edge. “I was in foster care as a child and then went to live with my grandma who was physically abusive. It’s little surprise that at school I was starting fights and lashing out at teachers.” Bullying and fights became a daily event for Dale. And things weren’t getting much better at home. The police ended up getting involved and put Dale’s family in touch with the council. “That was the first time I heard about Boost Mentoring – a scheme that links up volunteer mentors with young people. My mentor, David Ward, was a Savile Row tailor and we’d meet once a week. We’d go for a sandwich, play football, whatever really. “We became friends, he told me about his life and, when I felt ready, I told him about mine. He never dictated what I should do, but gave me honest advice and let me make my own decisions.” Dale and David are still in touch and life has transformed for Dale, who is now studying for his A-levels and has had work experience at the House of Lords. “Meeting David was a huge turning point for me. I learnt there’s more to life than just focusing on the negatives. Now if bad things happen, I work out what I can do to move forward.” Get more information about Boost Mentoring. Contact Fozia Sadiq at fsadiq@westminster.gov.uk or 020 7641 5403.

STRESS FREE
Aaron
Being a young carer can be hard, but there’s help out there. Aarron cares for his grandmother and uncle who has multiple sclerosis, and is the first to admit it can be tough. “It’s not easy, but it’s easier with the help of my support worker. They are really nice and are always there to help. “I hadn’t had time to myself for so long, but now I get respite every two weeks and I get to go to places and do things I never had time to do before. I also go to a young carers group with my brother and we go bowling and to the cinema. It’s nice to be
with other young carers, they’re all cool.” Aarron gets support from Spurgeons, an organisation that has helped hundreds of young carers on behalf of the council. They don’t just organise free activities and breaks, they can also help answer questions like how to keep up with schoolwork when you’re looking after someone at home, and who to talk to when you’re feeling like no one else understands. Check out spurgeonsyc. org/london or call 020 8969 7812.
