EATing

Family

For the family

Tea Time?

There’s loads going on across the West End for all the family to enjoy this weekend – from picnics and tea to arts and crafts, get out with the kids, explore and enjoy!

What could be more British to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne than afternoon tea at one of the West End’s legendary spots?

Here’s our pick of the best:

Fortnum’s on Piccadilly has a long history of inventing new tea and coffee blends for the royal family, many of which are still sold today. For the Jubilee they’ve created two exceptional new blends that would be fit for a queen, as well as a commemorative box for one’s favourite tea bags.

For the first time in 100 years Selfridges on Oxford Street will reopen its roof top terrace from 12pm – 6pm for Crazy Golf and The Big British Tea Party which will serve drinks, light lunches and proper afternoon tea – now that’s what we call ‘High’ Tea!

Brasserie Max For £32.50 per person, indulge in a quintessentially British afternoon tea in Covent Garden complete with a glass of Pommery champagne, tempting tea-cakes, delicate sandwiches and flavoured teas, coffees and infusions. Especially for the Jubilee, cakes on offer will include a Victoria sponge cake, shortbread with cream and English strawberries and a Limited Edition Queen Elizabeth cup cake.

Fancy your tea with a French twist? The Langham, London, has partnered with Asprey in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to create a selection of irresistible treats, inspired by Asprey’s exquisite jewellery collection. The afternoon tea includes items such as a blueberry and bilberry battenburg, purple jasmine with apricot and a praline truffle. Visit the hotel’s glittering centerpiece, Palm Court and indulge yourself for £45 excl.VAT Book now by calling 020 7806 1000 to avoid disappointment.

Head to Covent Garden and soak up the atmosphere with a Frenchinspired afternoon tea on the balcony of Laduree tea salon – a temple to high tea and the classic French macaroon!

Feeling regal? Pop in to the Crypt at St Martin in the Fields for Jubilee Family Fun art sessions where children can decorate their own royal crowns. The event is free when you present that day’s receipt for £5 or more from the Café in the Crypt or Shop at St Martin’s, or £2.50 without a receipt. Sessions run on Saturday from 10am – 12.30pm or 1.30pm – 5pm and on Sunday from 12 noon – 5pm. There is also a selection of royal replica brasses for brass rubbing on special offer (28 May – 10 June) for £3.00 (normally £4.50).

Why not take in a matinee show with the family? You are spoilt for choice in Theatreland, with a wealth of plays, spectacular musicals, dance and entertainment for all the family. Outside of the West End, The Polka Theatre and Unicorn Theatre specialise in world class children’s theatre. For the best family friendly theatre information in London, subscribe to Officiallondontheatre’s free fortnightly Family Bulletin at officiallondontheatre. co.uk/family-theatre

Visit Hamley’s renowned toy store on Regent Street to add a very special Diamond Jubilee Teddy Bear to your collection. The bear’s pale silver dress features the Royal Commemorative 2012 Diamond Jubilee crest.

From Saturday 2nd to Tuesday 5th June, Disney Store on Oxford Street are inviting all little Princesses and Princes to take part in themed crafting events in-store where the little Royal Darlings can personalise their very own Union Jack flag with a special Disney twist! Plus, children who visit the Disney Store dressed in Royal attire, will receive a free gift*.

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (3,4 and 5 June, 11am–3pm) visit the National Gallery and join in the Jubilee celebrations by creating and adding your own boat to an amazing waterborne parade as it sets sail across the Gallery. Plus find inspiration in their Art Labs, new, short, focused and experimental art sessions showing how to do specific tasks. For mum, dad and kids of all ages.

*See in store for details.

Piccadilly Big Jubilee Lunch On Sunday, head down to iconic Piccadilly to enjoy a British food and community market, alfresco dining, musical and symphony performances, vintage fair rides, street entertainers and theatre shows, military marching bands and much more.
