Welcome
Welcome To this special Silver Sunday edition of Westminster Plus magazine Following 2020’s somewhat low-key celebrations, it’s with great delight that we’re able to bring you this year’s programme of Silver Sunday events. Our annual day for celebrating older people is bigger (and dare we say better) than ever before. Silver Sunday is, for many, a key date in the yearly calendar – a chance not only to get out and meet up with friends and family, but also to make new acquaintances, try new things and remember why we love Westminster.
Councillor Tim Mitchell Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health
tmitchell@westminster.gov.uk
Councillor The Lady Flight
We’d like to thank everyone who is going above and beyond to organise a Silver Sunday event or activity this year. There are some exciting additions to the roster, including news about our legendary Tea Dance (see page 6), and what we hope will be a spectacular dog show at Paddington Recreation Ground (details on page 8). During the pandemic, many of us have turned to our faithful four-legged friends for much needed comfort. So why not treat them to a day of fun and excitement and perhaps even win a rosette? Today, Waggiest Tail at Silver Sunday. Tomorrow, Best in Show at Crufts! If you would like help to access our services, you can find lots of information on our website at westminster. gov.uk/adult-services. You can also email us at rsvp@ westminster.gov.uk. But we know that some of our residents are not able to access information online, so you can call us on our adults services line 020 7641 1444. 2

All aboard the Vaccine Bus
Connecting carers in Westminster Carers Network has launched an exciting new project in Westminster called Carers Connected. Local unpaid carers of all ages, as well as members of the wider community, can share their skills, hobbies, interests and passions with other carers in their area. Storytelling, embroidery, cookery, language skills – anything can be covered and sessions will take place via in-person groups in COVID-safe environments or online. Call 020 8960 3033 or email events@carersnetwork.org.uk for more details
One way we are ensuring everyone stays protected from coronavirus is through our vaccination programme – a key component of which is our amazing Vaccine Bus! Staffed by wonderful NHS workers and council staff, the bus provides vaccines, home testing kits and advice on how to stay safe. Find a link to the Vaccine Bus’s schedule, plus a list of vaccine centres across Westminster at westminster.gov.uk/vaccinations

Join in this Silver Sunday This year, Silver Sunday returns on Sunday 3 October with live, in-person events and a jam-packed programme full of exciting activities From boat trips to blue plaques, cycle tours to chocolates and cake, danceathons to dog shows – this year’s Silver Sunday promises a feast of fun for everyone to enjoy. Silver Sunday is always a fantastic opportunity to meet up with friends old and new, and as we all recover after months of lockdown, there’s no better chance to socialise with others and try something new. Remember to let your friends, family and neighbours know about the exciting events taking place, especially those that might not always have the chance to get out as much as they’d like. Silver Sunday is about bringing communities together and celebrating our older residents, so be sure to spread the word far and wide. The following pages give a flavour of what’s on offer this year, but new events are being added to the programme all the time. The Silver Sunday website is always kept up to date with the very latest activities, so please do check silversunday.org.uk if you don’t see something here to your liking, or if spaces are already filled.

Silver Sunday and care homes Silver Sunday has always paid special attention to Westminster’s care home residents. This year, the Lord Mayor of Westminster, along with Cllr The Lady Flight, will be visiting our care home residents accompanied by the fabulous Lucy Clark who will be treating residents to a medley of popular tunes that will be sure to raise a smile. In addition, members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (pictured right) will be paying special visits to several care homes in the city – complete with their magnificent horses!
Events and activities are donated by businesses, organisations and volunteers across the city and many of them are run by volunteers. Silver Sunday is a programme run by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation, a Westminster-based charity. New events and activities are being confirmed all the time so do visit silversunday.org.uk for the latest listings. Bringing back the Tea Dance Plans are afoot to welcome back this hugely popular event towards the end of the year After last year’s Tea Dance sadly had to be cancelled because of the pandemic, the Sir Simon Milton Foundation is very much hoping that it can once again go ahead this year. Sunday 5 December has been pencilled into the diary and, at the time of writing, consultations are ongoing with the venue – the Grosvenor House Hotel – to plan a safe event. We’re planning to make the final decision on whether to go ahead in the autumn. To attend, you must be over 65 and a resident of the City of Westminster, unless accompanying a resident of that age as a carer.
6
If you’re interested in attending, please write to the address on the right with: • Your name • Your date of birth • Your email address (if applicable) • Your full postal address • Your telephone number • Whether you will be accompanied by a carer If you wish to be accompanied by a carer, please also let us know their name, email address, postal address and preferred contact telephone number. We will only send out tickets once we know we are going ahead and will ask you to confirm at that time.
If you are interested in attending, please contact Lucinda Hurrey either by email at info@ sirsimonmiltonfoundation. com or in writing to: The Sir Simon Milton Foundation, Westminster City Hall (16th Floor), 64 Victoria Street, SW1E 6QP. Email is preferred as it will enable us to get in touch with you more quickly if circumstances change.

Putting your best paw forward For many, our four-legged friends have been faithful companions during the lockdown restrictions. This Silver Sunday we’d like to put them front and centre Since the start of the pandemic, London has seen the highest spike in dog ownership in the country, our beloved pooches often being a valuable source of comfort during times of isolation. Westminster City Council has long been committed to improving animal welfare and we’re currently the only local authority in the country to hold four awards from the RSPCA PawPrint Awards, recognising organisations that go above and beyond for the welfare of animals. For Silver Sunday this year, in partnership with The Mayhew Centre and Platinum Natural Pet Food, we thought it only right that we celebrate our canine companions with an Animal Welfare and Dog Show.
From 10am to 3pm on Sunday 3 October at Paddington Recreation Ground, there will be advice stalls, free microchipping, a dog ability show by Whirlwind Agility and prizes including ‘pawtraits’ by professional doggy photographer, Gruff Pawtraits, to be won in the following categories: • Waggiest Tail • Most Handsome Dog • Best Yearling (12 to 24 months) • Best Veteran (9 years and over) • Best 6 legs (dog and owner) • Dog the Judge Would Most Like to Take Home!
For full details of the event, head to westminster.gov.uk/dogshow

Putting your best paw forward
“As a dog owner myself, I recognise the time, energy and commitment having a pet requires,” says Councillor Jacqui Wilkinson, Animal Welfare Champion at Westminster City Council (pictured right with Georgie). “I hope that you come along not only to take advantage of the excellent free advice available, but also to enjoy the superb agility shows and perhaps even win a prize with your paw-fect pal!” 9
