With inflation outstripping income growth for most of our student families, the need for increased reliance on scholarships will be greater in the upcoming year. I would ask that all alumni and friends of Westminster reflect on our blessings and continue the tradition of financial support provided in the past.
This past academic year, the College provided approximately $30 million in scholarship funds to students, which made it possible for them to obtain the collaborative and experiential education Westminster offers whether the students are firstgeneration college students or from families steeped in higher education tradition.
The College’s mission “to help students develop competencies, commitments and characteristics that have distinguished human beings at their best” is realized through the dedication of our students, faculty and staff. Students continue to pursue and achieve excellence. During the past year, Titans have published and presented research, completed internships and practicums, worshiped and served in a variety of settings, and won Conference and national championships as athletes and as speakers. The faculty and staff provided guidance and encouragement as mentors and advisers.
The philanthropy of our alumni and friends makes all of these experiences possible. As the College commemorates its 170th year, we remember all those who have faithfully given to build and sustain this special institution. The Board of Trustees has continued its tradition of 100% participation in giving to support the mission of the College. The Honor Roll of Giving offers the College the opportunity for gratitude and celebration as we honor our donors. I am especially thankful for the financial support that allows the College to provide a variety of scholarships and grants, knowing how essential the funding is for so many of our students. I identify personally with that reality. My undergraduate education at a small private college was made possible because of a fulltuition scholarship and other grants—and I am grateful daily for the many ways in which that experience was transformative for me as a first-generation college student. The intellectual, spiritual and social growth I experienced there and the deep connections I made with caring faculty and staff continue to enrich my life decades after my graduation. I’ve heard similar stories from so many Titan alumni and friends—the investments in scholarships and grants that make it possible for students to engage in an educationally supportive and stimulating education pay lifelong dividends for those who benefit from them. It’s rewarding to be part of something that is so significant, and I hope you experience that as well.
I’ve been reminded this year that birthdays and anniversaries that end in zeroes or fives seem to have added significance— and the 170th anniversary of the founding of Westminster has rung loudly with such importance, particularly when it arrived during a global pandemic. While we began calendar year 2022 celebrating this big anniversary, we had many other reasons during the academic year to celebrate as well: the dedication of the new Hoyt Science Center wing and the Dar Huey Heritage Center in Memorial Field House; the outstanding URAC program in April that showcased students’ scholarly and creative works; numerous athletic championships and artistic performances; and the graduation of almost 300 Titans in May. Despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, the carillon in Old Main and the Victory Bell rang with joy.
We also celebrated the ongoing, faithful support from alumni and friends. We continue to make progress on strategic goals, enhancing enrollment efforts with enlivened on-campus events and expanded marketing and improving campus facilities.
Along with great teaching, support for students from the TRIO Student Success Services Program, Academic Success Center and the Campus Wellness Center have promoted student growth. The international study program has resumed; the
Entrepreneurship Center is thriving; academic programs across the humanities and sciences are forging important community partnerships. Gifts to the Westminster Fund and the Wherever Needed Most Fund helped resource programs, projects and scholarships. We have concluded dispersing the generous gifts offered to the Bring Back the Titans campaign, gifts that helped more than 100 students continue their Westminster education despite the financial hardships the pandemic brought—that’s certainly worthy of celebration and gratitude!
So, as we begin the new academic year, know how deeply grateful I am for your support of our students and the College.
Your gifts truly have immediate and lasting impact. As those who have provided support for the College since its founding in 1852 have demonstrated, each gift adds strength and allows the College to move forward with its critically important mission.

Since the early months of the pandemic, the Westminster College community has consistently and compassionately mobilized in many ways to support each other and to keep our community safe. We knew, early on, that many of our students and their families were bearing especially difficult burdens wrought by the pandemic—job losses and serious illnesses—that threatened to derail their educational goals. Now, as we move into the second half of 2022, it is worth pausing to reflect on the progress that has been made in creating the conditions that have allowed many to return—safely—to work and to school. It is also worth acknowledging those who helped to assuage the strife wrought by the pandemic.
We are deeply grateful for the many alumni, friends, businesses, and foundations that chose to support our students with gifts to the Bring Back the Titans campaign, held in 2021, which provided significant financial support to help students who were most significantly affected by the pandemic. We are pleased to acknowledge the meaningful and measurable impact that gifts to the campaign have had on our students:
• Forty-one (41) students who received tuition and other financial assistance from our Bring Back the Titans campaign have now graduated from Westminster College.
• Fifty-six (56) students who received tuition and other financial assistance from the Bring Back the Titans campaign are on track to continue their education at Westminster.
• The retention rate among students who received tuition and other financial assistance from the Bring Back the Titans campaign is an impressive eighty-two (82) percent.
The above results demonstrate the impact of gifts of all sizes and when those gifts are directed to ensuring that our most vulnerable students can participate and succeed in Westminster’s exceptional experiential and educational environment. The above results speak to the College’s commitment—made possible through generous support from alumni and friends—to students of low socioeconomic status and those from traditionally underrepresented and under-served populations.

During their honeymoon in 1976, David ’73 and Kathleen (Kappy) Jackson ’73 Sarver hopped in their car and began driving from northern Arizona towards Phoenix for the next leg of their newlywed adventure. Before long, their views of the breathtakingly beautiful multicolored rock formations were interrupted with a hiss and a pop. Their car’s radiator hose burst, leaving them miles from civilization, stranded on the side of the road in the 115-degree heat until a local farmer in a dusty pickup truck pulled up next to them and saved the day.
The three of them sat hip to hip in his truck and made their way down the road to the nearest car parts store. They retraced their drive back to their stranded car where the farmer went one step further in his kindness and got their car up and running again smoothly. When they offered to compensate the farmer, he declined and said, “just pay it forward.”
This statement would become a theme in their lives for the 40-plus years following the car incident. Dave and Kappy continue to do just that, honoring the words of the farmer, by generously paying it forward through their time, talent and treasure in their careers and passions; to their family and to strangers; and in the spaces and communities in which they feel
blessed to dwell. Most recently, they chose to support Westminster students through the establishment of the William E. Blackburn Annual Fund Scholarship. This scholarship ensures that one student every four years walks across Senior Terrace on graduation day debtfree.
“We hope this scholarship gives students the freedom to focus completely on all aspects of their college education and experience, with the knowledge that they can graduate without any debt burden,” said Dave. “They will have monetary stability through four years and it assures them of being able to put their future salary to work covering housing, transportation and living expenses. Hopefully, it will give them the option of daring greatly upon graduation.”
As for their decision on the name of the scholarship, it stems from Dave’s experience working on Westminster’s Buildings and Grounds crew under William “Bill” Blackburn, superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. Dave credits Blackburn with having taught him many lessons that were pivotal to his work ethic throughout his life.
“The creation of this scholarship was based on our gratitude for what others have done for us,” said Dave. “We believe that the success we have achieved has roots in lessons learned, help received and encouragement from others.”
The Sarvers have indeed paid it forward in many other ways since their time at Westminster. Following graduation, Kappy pursued a career as a high school social studies teacher and, while raising a family, volunteered with their church, in their children’s classrooms, with their Girl Scout troop, and with the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet. During Dave’s career in public accounting with KPMG and, later, as senior vice president of finance with FirstMerit Bank, he has served as a member of Westminster’s Board of Trustees as well as the College’s Alumni Council, and on the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet and various leadership roles at his church.
“Just as a stone thrown into a pond creates ripples, our desire is for more ripples to be triggered by our gift,” said Dave. “The students our gift impacts have the potential to impact many more people in their lives.”

Westminster College’s roots and blooms are painted with equity, and her doors are open wide for an expansive opportunity for students of all backgrounds. The campus community, nationally recognized as a top 10 performer for social mobility this year by the U.S. News and World Report, celebrates the noteworthy accomplishments of students who are supported by generous donors and foundations, renowned members of faculty and staff, and an enriching emphasis on every student becoming a human being at their best.
One recent alumna and first-generation college student, Annalisa Echevarria ’22, recalls being stirred to attend Westminster College because of the opportunity she saw on campus during her time at the Bright Futures summer camp. The Bright Futures camp, funded by the Marion G. Resch Foundation, has been held at Westminster since 2005 and focuses on enhancing academic growth and preparation for higher education.
“When I was accepted into the Bright Futures program, I thought it was a way to get out of the house for a week, but looking back on it now, that program helped me make my decision to come to Westminster,” said Echevarria.
“Being a first-generation college student, coming to Westminster was the best decision,” said Echevarria.
“Westminster has supported me in all kinds of ways from day one. Whether it be helping me find an internship, giving me the opportunity to meet with professionals in my field or giving me and others an opportunity to represent Westminster on high levels.”
Westminster College views its commitment to increasing financial support for first-generation college students, in Echevarria’s case, as well as for students with a low socioeconomic status, and others who are from historically marginalized populations as a missiondriven imperative.
The Board of Trustees and the President are united in efforts to encourage significant philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations who share the College’s commitment to creating opportunities for students to fully experience the transformational benefits of higher education. The College has identified a bold goal of securing additional endowed funds and funding per year in unrestricted and flexible giving.
Creating a backbone of support for students, Westminster established the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program which benefits first-generation, income eligible students and students with disabilities. Funded by a $1.3 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, TRIO SSS provides academic tutoring, financial literacy, cultural and wellness programming and mentoring to more than 105 first-generation and lowincome students so that they achieve the outcomes that mark a successful Westminster graduate.
Westminster College has recently established a chapter of Alpha Alpha Alpha, a national honorary society for firstgeneration students, including first-generation students participating in the TRIO program. This society will recognize first-generation students who achieve a GPA of 3.20 or higher for 36 or more credit hours of college work. An active Tri-Alpha chapter promotes academic excellence and provides opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, and campus and community service for first-generation college students. A faculty member and an administrator who were first-generation undergraduates themselves will co-advise the chapter.
“My time in college was nothing that I could expect,” said Echevarria. “Getting hands-on experience in the classroom, being able to live on my own, getting to meet new people who I’ll be friends with for a long time and just being able to experience life in a new perspective really helped Westminster exceed my expectations.”

The 2021-2022 Honor Roll of Giving recognizes all donors to Westminster College during the period of July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022. Gifts received since July 1, 2022, will be acknowledged in the 2022-2023 Honor Roll of Giving. The following endowed funds were established during the 2021-2022 fiscal year through contributions from alumni and friends of Westminster College for the purpose of providing supplemental sources of financial assistance to students who meet the criteria set by the donors.
William E. Blackburn Annual Fund Scholarship. Established by David A. Sarver ’73 and Kathleen D. Sarver ’73 to honor the life of William (Bill) E. Blackburn who was superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Westminster for 40 years. Awarded to nursing and education majors.
Howard B. Eklund ’51 & Marietta Anderson Eklund ’51 Endowed Scholarship. Established by Robert Eklund to honor his parents who met as students at Westminster. Awarded to math or science majors.
R. Scott Kirschler Jr. ’88 Memorial Scholarship. Established by R. Scott Kirschler Sr. ’63 in memory of his son, R. Scott Kirschler Jr. ’88, a business major and former member of the Westminster golf team. Awarded to a junior in the Westminster School of Business.
Susan Anderson Lydon ’68 Endowed Scholarship. Established by Patrick J. Lydon ’70 in memory of his wife, Susan, to keep her conservative values, hard work ethic, passion for nursing, and fighting spirit alive. Awarded to nursing majors.
Margaret Williams Migliore Memorial Scholarship in Education. Established by Daniel L. Migliore in honor of his wife, Margaret, who graduated from Westminster College in 1956. Awarded to a senior education major.
David R. Nesbit ’79 & Mary Jo Nesbit Accounting and Finance Scholarship. Established by David R. Nesbit ’79 and Mary Jo Nesbit. David graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Business Administration/ Accounting in 1979 and was a member of the cross country team and the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity while attending Westminster. Awarded based on academic achievement to accounting or finance majors.
Diana M. Reed Early Education Scholarship. Established by Dr. John R. Reed and the family and friends of Diana Reed in honor of her 31 years of service to the Education Department at Westminster College. Awarded to a junior or senior in the School of Education with a strong interest in becoming a Pre-K educator.
Robert C. & JoAnn Richardson Scholarship. Established by Dr. Robert R. Richardson and Dr. Kathy B. Richardson in honor of Robert and JoAnn Richardson, to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college. Awarded based on communication related or leadership activities.
Andrew L. Sands ’54 & Eileen J. (Drugmand) Sands ’54 & Lori A. Sands ’80 Endowed Scholarship. Established by Andrew L. Sands ’54 in support of the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education and a strong work ethic can provide. Awarded to math, computer science, biology, chemistry or physics majors.
Elizabeth A. Smith ’81 Scholarship. Established by Betsy Smith ’81, who was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority and instrumental in establishing the first women’s softball team at Westminster. Awarded to a first-year student (preference to a female), in good academic standing and demonstrated leadership qualities, strong involvement in extracurricular activities and majoring in the fields of sports management, history or sociology/criminal justice studies.

Beginning on page 37 of this issue of the Honor Roll of Giving, you’ll see an impressive list of new endowed scholarships established during the 2021-2022 fiscal year. These newly endowed scholarships represent a special commitment by donors to our students, now and in the future, because endowed funds have the unique feature of providing support in perpetuity.
These newly endowed gifts are the latest additions to what is one of Westminster College’s many strengths: its endowment. Recently, the College’s endowment was valued at $132,721,401, representing the combined generosity of donors over the decades and sound investment practices overseen by the Board of Trustees.
Endowed funds are vital to the mission of the College because they help build the financial health of the institution and they help the College remain competitive and affordable for deserving students from all socio-economic backgrounds.
To begin a conversation about establishing an endowed scholarship in honor or in memory of a loved one, or in your own name or you family’s name, please contact the Division of Institutional Advancement, 724-946-7018. Effective Jan. 1, 2023, the minimum gift level for endowed scholarships will be $50,000. Endowed funds may be established with an initial gift and with the balance funded over a period of up to five years.
A ccording to the National Philanthropic Trust, the number of individual donor-advised funds (DAFs) exceeded one million for the first time in 2021. Here at Westminster College, we are seeing an increase in the number of our alumni and friends who choose to give via donor-advised funds. The College’s Division of Institutional Advancement took a closer look at donor-advised funds recently and offers the following insights for our alumni and friends who have DAFs—and for those who might be considering a DAF:
A donor-advised fund is a fund that is established by a donor and managed by a sponsoring organization, such as a community foundation. Donors make irrevocable, taxdeductible contributions to the sponsoring organization in the form of assets such as cash, stocks, etc. The DAF sponsoring organization then invests the assets with the goal of growing the philanthropic impact of the funds. The donor may then make recommendations to the sponsoring organization for grants to be made from the DAF to a qualified charity of the donor’s choosing.
• Why do some people choose to use this method of giving?
According to givingusa.org, many donors who use DAFs choose this method because they receive immediate tax benefits at the time the assets are transferred into a DAF; in this way, some donors find that there is more predictability and control over financial planning when using a DAF as the preferred method of giving. In addition, a key benefit of using a DAF is asset growth: donors can plan for future philanthropic gifts at a higher level than they may be capable of making today.
• If I have (or intend to establish) a donor-advised fund, can I direct my gifts to Westminster College?
Yes! DAFs are intended to benefit qualified charitable organizations; Westminster College meets that standard as it is recognized as a tax-exempt organization registered with the IRS and recognized under Section 501(c)3 of
the Internal Revenue Code. Note, however, that methods for recommending grants from DAFs are subject to the procedures established by the DAF sponsoring organization and may include limitations on the number of individual contributions, minimum individual donation amounts, and minimum account balances.
Whether you choose an outright gift to Westminster or a gift through a donor-advised fund, know that your gifts are making a difference in the lives of our students and that we deeply appreciate your support.
