What a memorably challenging school experience,

Masks and distancing remained the most visible signals that campus life this year was different. Further, about 10% of our community remained distance learning students scattered far and wide around the world, many still remarkably connected to daily campus activities. One revealing anecdote: at the distribution of yearbooks from 2019-2020, we were reminded by the many photographs of how different everything looked on a pre-pandemic Williams Hill, a campus without universal masks. With “community” as our first core value, all of us felt personally the loss of family-style lunches, in-person assemblies and chapels, interscholastic games, and packed performances in Werner Centennial Theater, to highlight just a few examples. Nevertheless, we persisted. Student clubs thrived. The intrateam scrimmages at Hovey were fun community opportunities, as were the periodic Dramat, Dance Ensemble, Chorale, Chamber Choir, Concert Band and Jazz Band performances at various campus locations. In the process, we even discovered all sorts of new performance spaces around our beautiful Williams Hill campus.
Congratulations
Grit & Grace meant more than ever this year. Our circumstances, so unexpected and so hard, demanded lots of Grit. At the same time, we became more personally aware and appreciative of the circumstances of others, whether with respect to the suffering resulting from the health or economic consequences of the pandemic or related to our sustained focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, which you led with so much Grace. Simply put, the Class of 2021 rose to the challenge of this COVID-19 year so impressively and in the process assured its enduring legacy in our school’s history.

For Mrs. Philip and me, your graduation this spring is personally poignant. Yours will be the last diplomas I will sign. Although Mrs. Philip and I will join you in departing Williams Hill, we will continue to cherish all the lessons and the memories we learned here. Westminster School will always remain on our minds and in our hearts, and for that enduring gift we are so grateful. Of course, we will look forward to seeing you periodically in the years ahead at future reunions and alumni events. In all of your future endeavors, the Class of 2021 will be amazing ambassadors for our great school.

Led by Prefects Francesca Bradley, Jane Burke, Olivia Goldstuck, Jordy Nelson, Bennett Ostern, Hudson Stedman, Nate Stevens, Campbell Swift, Claire Taylor, and Olatunji Osho-Williams, with Junior Prefect and Sixth Form President Izzy Bailey and Head Prefect Will Rizzo, you embraced the challenges that accompanied these extraordinary circumstances with a warmly welcoming and empathetic leadership model. Will faithfully led weekly Zoom assemblies, Izzy’s boundless enthusiasm energized everyone, and Claire, as John Hay President, successfully coordinated our weekly chapel services. Yes, this school year was very different, but thanks to all of your efforts, we sustained many of our cherished traditions, including a Lawn Ceremony, the new student Sign-In Ceremony, and a virtual Candlelight Service!

From the newest state-of-the-art facilities to the daffodils along Perkin Memorial Drive that welcome spring visitors to campus, everywhere we look here on Williams Hill reveals the legacy of your eleven years as leaders of our school. The physical transformation has been nearly complete. Yet even more meaningful are the less tangible things that your leadership has preserved and safeguarded: our core values of Community, Character, Balance and Involvement. Our motto, Grit and Grace. And the foundation upon which the rest is built: the relationships we nurture among one another. Mr Philip, in our first moments as Westminster students you greeted us at registration, spoke at the signing-in ceremony and addressed us in chapel. Your words in these moments made it official: we were Martlets now, and that meant something very special. Mrs Philip, your cheerful smile and warm greeting never failed to brighten our day. Your care for us was always evident, whether as our coach, welcoming us into the dining hall each day at lunch, or just in passing around campus.. Throughout this year of unprecedented challenge to the life of our school, your steadfast leadership reassured us that our traditions would continue, and all would be well in the end. Taking our cue from you we came together as a community. While there were tough moments along the way, we discovered many unexpected moments for growth, camaraderie, and joy.

Not even Covid-19 could stop the Horizons at Westminster summer program. The program, now in its fourth year, allows Westminster students to volunteer with elementary school students from Hartford, CT. Our volunteers were thrilled to still get to interact with the kids, either virtually or socially-distanced. Everyone worked together to overcome the challenges the pandemic posed, and this summer really showed what a little Grit and Grace can do!
The elementary students were kept busy with lots of cool art and science projects!

Weekly surveillance testing ensured that students would be able to attend classes in-person, participate in a variety of afternoon programs, and enjoy seated meals in the dining hall. Without the endless dedication and hard work from the entire Health Center staff, this year on the Hill would have looked much different. The entire Westminster community is truly grateful.

Global Community Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some of our Martlets weren't able to return to Simsbury for the start of the school year. Instead, they stayed at home as distance learners. We caught up with a few of our distance learners from around the world to ask them about their experiences learning on Zoom, and getting to take classes from the comfort of their hometowns.

What's the hardest adjustment you've had to make? Alice: "Staying awake at 2AM. It was difficult to stay up that late during the first couple days, but I have gotten used to it." Dylan: "Having only spent 5 months total at Westminster, I sometimes feel not as connected to it as I do when I am there. Also, I miss my new friends." Phil: "How I can adjust myself to the best condition in order to focus on the classes and study efficiently during nighttime. I drink coffee in the afternoon or take a nap to keep myself “sober”." What have you learned about yourself from this experience? Alice: "I learned that I can stay up very late and still have a lot of energy. I had no idea I could do this!" Dylan: "I learned that Westminster is a special place and that it’s easy to miss." Phil: "'Time is like water in the sponge, which will always be squeezed out if you are willing to.' —Xun Lu, Chinese writer."

Distance learning allowed students from all over the world to continue their Westminster education safely from home. The positive aspects of this included time with family members (including the furry ones!) and home cooked meals. In places like China where the spread of Covid was largely contained during this school year, students were able to travel to historic and cultural sites, and spend time with friends in the cities. The downside? Being away from campus, and the often challenging hours of each class day. The photo below was taken from the window of one of our Asian classmates, showing her view during class.

This fall, students participated in a myriad of activities for their afternoon programs. In a newly introduced system, Martlets had the option to choose offseason sports to play in addition to their dedicated activity. With sports ranging from baseball to water polo, the opportunities were plentiful. Even though games were canceled for fall teams, the advantage of the beautiful New England weather still allowed for teams to use the fields every day. The school motto of 'Grit and Grace' was certainly evident in sports this fall. TRIM LINE TRIM LINE

Athlete Spotlight Q: What was different about XC this fall compared to other years?
Spencer Kwan '22
A: Masking was a big challenge. While many think that XC is an individual sport, but it involves camaraderie and teamwork. The required isolation made it difficult to carry the burden of running alone.
Q: What went well this fall? What didn't? A: The opportunity to race against other schools virtually was nice because we got to see how our times stacked up against others. But, the new members of the team missed out on the normal group runs, which I feel deepens the dynamic of our team.
Q: What makes the XC team special to you? A: It's really the people that make the team what it is. Without my teammates pushing me to get better, I wouldn't be where I am today. During my summer training, I ran thinking about how someone out there is working harder than me, and that made me think about my teammates.

Athlete Spotlight
Layton Harmon '21
Q: What is your favorite memory from your time on the water polo team?
Q: What do you think went well this fall? What didn't?
A: When we played Deerfield last November. It was such a well-fought game and I could tell how much the team wanted to win. Even Mr. G and PK were on their toes! That made it a memorable game to play in, not to mention the fact that such a new program like us bested a powerhouse program like Deerfield.
A: This fall was very challenging for us. But, I think our training on specific skills was detrimental to team growth. One thing I noticed that got better this fall was ball control; in previous seasons, we had been very hesitant and reluctant to pass, but our movement was much smoother this fall. One thing that could've been better this fall was our focus.
Q: What makes the team special to you? A: The team is so special to me because we always have each others backs no matter what. We are a real team, and it shows in games. When one player struggles, the whole team is there to pick him up. In practice, we were always put through difficult training, but that only made our bond stronger. We can adapt to anything, and I am proud to be a part of such a great crew.

One of the ways Westminster adjusted school life to due to the Covid pandemic was by increasing the number of athletic and afternoon activity options each term. Candlelight term: "Disrupting the narrative" of American history In December, as part of Westminster’s ongoing work in diversity, equity, and inclusion, all history students and faculty undertook a sustained, in-depth consideration of the history of Black America. As part of this three-week curriculum, the entire Westminster community read James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time; a copy of the book for every student and faculty member was

made possible through a generous gift to the school. Alumna Erin Corbett ‘95, who now leads a non-profit focused on diversity and opportunity, played a key role in the development of this curriculum. The goal of this curriculum was to encourage students, and participating faculty, to think and rethink the history of Black Americans. We consciously sought to "disrupt the narrative," and build an understanding that Black history is American history – not an adjunct or an add-on. In the past, we have treated Black history more cursorily, and this program has allowed our students to carefully consider these issues in an intensive, meaningful way. Moving forward, this curriculum and its materials will be curated and archived and used by teachers every year in a variety of classes and contexts. The four lesson-plan pairs of the curriculum included a close examination of the compromises that led to the institutionalization of slavery in the U.S. Constitution, contrasted with the history of antebellum resistance and rebellion by enslaved people; the efforts of the Freedmen to build new lives and communities during Reconstruction and the emerging national leadership of Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and others at the end of the 19th century; the remarkable story of "Black Wall Street," which led to the Tulsa Pogrom of 1921, and the power and influence of the Harlem Renaissance; and the structural and systemic racism of the post-1945 era, which fueled the Civil Rights Movement and continues today through many forms of contemporary activism.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT Mr Aber on Sabbatical THIS YEAR'S RECIPIENT of the generous faculty sabbatical grant was Mr. Aber. You may have spotted him around campus, as he mainly stayed in residence while taking time to develop his own personal and professional interests. "For the most part, I spent my days pursuing my three passions: music, writing, and math/computers," he shared. "I continued practicing the clarinet, learned some of the Bach Goldberg Variations on the piano, and played the sax a few times a week, rehearsing with colleagues Grant Gritzmacher (guitar and vocal) and Michael Cervas (piano) in our new band, Firetown Road. I explored various types of writing genres, focusing mostly on short satirical pieces. Additionally, I audited courses through MIT's OpenCourseWare, including Artificial Intelligence and Programming in Python. Most importantly, I expanded my baking repertoire," said our own self-styled Pi-man, and the results appear delicious indeed! Here's hoping Mr Aber will share the fruits of all of his work over this sabbatical year when he returns next fall---pies included!

Throughout her time at Westminster, Michelle has taken a number of math classes including AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC and Linear Algebra and is currently working on an independent study in Mathematics with Mr. Griffith. Michelle claims she “fell in love with math because math explained the fundamental logic of the world and assigned every movement and every natural phenomenon a precise pattern.” Outside of her coursework at Westminster, she researched rational solutions “of a type of cubic equations called elliptic curves, which are crucial to cryptography and the proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem.” She plans to continue pursuing math in the future as she hopes to use math to solve challenges in society.

Olatunji got to share his writing skills at a 2019 Friday Nights at Westminster event, when he read one of his short stories before welcoming visiting author Lucy Ferriss. The piece, entitled "Under the Cloud Cover" was a fictional horror story; according to Olatunji, "it was fun to share [my work] with people," and he had wanted to participate in the Friday Night events since freshman year. This year, Olatunji was a winner of the Hill-Stead Museum's 2020 Fresh Voices Competition, and was a featured reader at the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival in August. His winning poem will be published this winter. Olatunji likes writing science fiction and fantasy the best, saying that he enjoys building and exploring new worlds and timelines. Janessa Yan is testing the waters Many students probably know that the Farmington River flows through the valley between our campus and Tariffville on the next hill over. However, most students are not to be found knee-deep in its icy currents on a midwinter day. What inspired Janessa Yan '22 to this chilly pastime? The discovery that a number of our local lakes and rivers have been deemed insufficiently clean for fishing and swimming by the Environmental Protection Agency. Janessa explains, "By testing the water upstream and down from our local sewage treatment plant, I hope to see whether it plays a part in the contamination of our local water. Ultimately, through this research, I also hope to understand our impact on river ecosystems and solutions so that humans can simultaneously enjoy what nature has to offer and be conscientious about protecting our environment." In the photo at left, Janessa collects water samples from one of our local bodies of water that she will use in this research. Her findings will be presented at the 2021 Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair in the spring.

Hazel was originally developed to DAY be just an alarm clock but Matt realized that he could use scent for “aromatherapy that could help enhance people’s emotional health.” The project took Matt three years to complete, and was filled with complicated challenges for him to work through. For example, he noted that he “had a hard time coding to activate sensors and actuators,” and “there were a lot of uncertainties on figuring out the problems (compiling error, short circuit, infinite loop.” However, Matt persevered and was satisfied with his end product. Outside of this project, Matt hopes to continue working with electrical engineering and computer science and is passionate about exploring machine learning.

"When coming to Westminster this year, I was interested in the Spanish 4 class because it was unlike any other Spanish course I had taken," she explains. "It was less focused on grammar and vocabulary, but rather, the culture and history.
I've found this course very interesting and a lot more engaging as we learn more about the relevant and fascinating history of Spanish-speaking countries." Tatum Constant '21, talks about what makes Spanish 4 special.

Global Perspectives: Letters to Madagascar Westminster offers unique opportunities to connect with people around the world. We sat down with French teacher Madame Barrillon about her leadership with Westminster's French pen-pal program. Customer is allowed to have objects outside of the margin.
How did this program start? Madame Barrillon: Four years ago, I wanted my students to start a correspondence with a French speaking country other than France. So, over the summer, I started my research and decided to email schools in Morocco, Togo, Congo, Madagascar, and Côte d'Ivoire. I received a very positive and enthusiastic answer from Madame Lydie in Madagascar so we decided to start this project that fall.
How long have you been doing this project with your students?
Why do you think this project is important to do every year? Madame Barrillon: This project really matters to me for several reasons. First of all, this is an amazing way for my students to i nteract in the target language. Also, a great way to discover a different culture, to understand the traditions, the way of life, different types of food that this country can offer. It is a wonderful and authentic source of information for students. Students are able to compare cultures which is a wonderful asset for the language learning process. Furthermore, this project is extremely rewarding as students are able to apply their knowledge: the vocabulary, the structures learned over the years. Finally, they make new friends and who knows, one day they might go and visit.
Language Options "Before coming to Westminster, I read a biography of Caesar and was impressed by his military tactic as well as literary talent. Driven by the desire to analyze his original texts, I started learning by myself Latin that summer. As I explored more about Roman history, I discovered that even American culture takes its root in Roman History. For example, the Founding Founders were influenced by classical education. America’s executive (President & Vice President similar to the two consuls in Rome), judicial (Supreme Court), and legislature (Senate) branches were directly derived from the Ancient Roman model. Working with Mr. Stump enables me to explore the connections between language and history. I really enjoy discussing the cultural part that lays behind the language and how authors formed their distinct styles influenced by periods they lived with Mr. Stump."

"My freshman year, I was the only freshman in the dance ensemble. I had experience in competitive dance at home, so I was excited to join the team! The program has allowed me to meet new people and branch out. This has been very rewarding as I have made many new friends who share the same passion for dance as I do. The program has also allowed me to express myself through the amazing choreography of both students and our lovely teachers."
"I believe that everyone is an artist, but everyone has their way of expressing their vision. For me, visual art is a very effective tool for expressing my thoughts and aesthetics. My motivation comes from music, movies, sports, friends, and a whole lot of meaningless daydreaming. At Westy, the open studio helped me focus on art and design studies, as I spent a fair amount of free time in the art studio in my junior year. Mrs. Kendall and Mr. Sandoval, my art teachers, were very supportive as they always share their honest critiques." This year was particularly exciting, as all actors got to play a variety of roles (something that is not common for a normal fall production.) As co-president of Dramat, I was pleased to see how enthusiastic everyone was throughout the experience. My favorite memory has to be the day we decided to all get together and do improvisation. Everyone was laughing and putting themselves out there. It was very fun.
The Spectator staff caught up with several Sixth Formers whose artistic contributions have enhanced our community over these few years. We asked them what inspires them to create and perform, and to give us some insight into their experience studying performing and visual arts here on the Hill.

Olivia Goldstuck '21 Dance Ensemble Co-President shared her thoughts about the Westminster dance program, and how it has adapted and thrived this year
Q: When did you get involved in the dance program? A: I got involved my sophomore year because I had been dancing all my life and I wanted to continue it in high school. Q: What has the program meant to you over the years? A: I came from a very competitive dance studio, so I sort of felt like I was falling out of love with dance with each day that passed. When I came to Westy, I found my love for it again and that is something I will always be grateful for. Q: How did the team adapt to newfound challenges this year? A: I think that, with a few bumps along the way, we have made the most of this year and learned how to play cards we have been dealt. When the year started, we were told that we couldn’t practice in the dance studio so, instead, we had to dance in the gym and do an outdoor performance. Surprisingly, the outdoor performance was better than any of us ever expected and the community absolutely loved it!

Jane Burke - Co-President of Dramat How was your experience in the cabaret? Although I was sad that the winter musical was cancelled, I was excited to hear that we would be doing a cabaret. It has been amazing to see everyone bring something to the table for the show, and I have enjoyed watching the group grow each day. One thing that is great about cabaret, is that everyone is able to have an opportunity to showcase their talent through songs of their choice. I am really impressed with the passion that everyone has brought to the show. It was a great winter for Dramat.

Q: How has the swim team changed due to COVID? A: We usually have more people crammed in a lane for practice, which has resulted in our practice time being cut in half in order to accommodate all of the swimmers. Thankfully we have been able to compete through virtual meets which have been a lot of fun. 60

Q: What drew you to pick the swim team as an afternoon program?
Jean-Claude Lane '21
I chose the swim team initially because because it was the sport I have had the most experience and success in. After my freshman year however, I chose to remain in the swim team due to its positive environment, challenging training regiments, and strong sense of camaraderie.
Q: How would you describe the swim team community?
Q: How has the swim team changed due to COVID?
The community is extremely tight knit and always willing to give their all. It is not unusual to see people going as fast as they would in a meet during a regular practice, as we are constantly pushing each other to improve. There is joy and laughter in the team even if everybody is exhausted .The saying "It's always sunny on the pool deck" holds true when it comes to swim team.
COVID has brought a lot of challenges. Usually we would have the opportunity to swim for two hours per practice, but this year that time has been cut in half. As a result, sets during COVID has seen an increase in intensity, and practice now includes significantly more time spent on dry-land training. However, despite the practical changes to the team, spirits have remained high and the community is as close as ever.

Athlete Spotlight What were some changes in the squash season this year? This season was not what anyone imagined it to be, with only a few weeks of being able to really play due to the covid progressions, but we had a great group of girls that still made the most of our time together. We had a lot of new players who were great additions to the team. What were some pros and cons of this season? Even though we didn't have any matches and had to work with the covid progression guidelines, we were lucky to be able to spend the season together as a team!
Ellie Bailey '21
What’s the most special part about the girls’ squash team? The people who make up the girls squash program make it so special. The girls are fun, hard-working, dedicated and bring a lot of energy to every practice, and Mr. Ulrich does a great job, always coaching us to our full potential.

Athlete Spotlight What were some changes in the squash season this year? Without the ability to play matches against other schools, we were able to put more emphasis on solo practice. Everyone had the chance to work on whatever technique or skill they needed to improve, which may have been different for somebody else. Also, in years past the first and second teams had been able to practice together. Given the fact that all sports were split into developmental and AP groups, we had a smaller number of players than previous seasons. What were some pros and cons of this season? Obviously losing out on match play was tough since playing matches is the best way to get better. Luckily we got to the point where we could play each other and even were able to play a full intrasquad scrimmage with the group split into two teams. It was fun to be able to play each other in a competitive environment, something we lost due to no real season.
Peter Miller '22
What’s the most special part about the boys’ squash team? I think the most special thing about any squash team is that in a match against another team, the number one player’s match matters just as much as the number seven’s match. In other words, you can have the bottom four spots on the ladder win their matches while the top three lose, and your team would still win the overall match. You can be the most or least skilled player on the team yet you still matter just as much as the guy next to you.

Athlete Spotlight The Spectator asked team captain Bella Tawney and Mather Thompson about their season.
Bella Tawney '22
I’ve played basketball all three years of my Westminster career. Although we didn’t have any games this year, we had a lot of new players and were able to build a stronger team aspect for next year. With our change in schedule we had more time for practice and could better develop our skills. I'm excited to see what we do in competition next year!
Mather Thompson '23 What were some changes in the basketball season this year? This season we had no games and the practices were shorter. In addition for the most part we had to stay six feet away with masks, which made it harder to do team drills. What were some pros and cons of this season? One con was not being able to play any games, especially away games. Some pros were being able to still improve on basketball skills throughout the fall and winter, and having good feeds every week. What’s the most special part about the girls’ basketball team? The most special part is the players. The team works well together and has a fun time regardless of the circumstances, especially this year.

"I learned that you really shouldn't take things for granted. Being a part of a team, with good people, and good coaches is a privilege that most people don't get to experience. I learned to take all that in and enjoy the adventure as its happening, because we aren't guaranteed tomorrow."
This winter I got to work with a lot of people who don't play basketball as their main sport. I got to guide them and coach them through certain scenarios, so they can be prepared for the future. There were a lot of questions asked, but it was great to watch them develop on the court. Also with a small group this winter there was a lot of personal development, where I can focus on myself and have a lot of one on one time with Coach Pringle, along with developing other people's games as well. My favorite memory from my time on the team was playing against the Gunnery in one of our final games of the 2020 season. We lost 2 of our main players to unfortunate circumstances, so me and Gabe needed to step up. We both did. We both put up great stats, and won the game by three at their place. Definitely one of our best wins of the season, and best memories as well.
Teddy Mangiarotti '21 tells us about his experience playing basketball at Westy
The best part about being on the team is probably the friendships that are created. You become closer with people you don't regularly talk to including kids from all grade levels. Special bonds are created that will last years and years after we graduate.

Whether spending a warm, sunny day with friends on the quad, kicking back in Armour with a puzzle or a game of chess, or hanging out with nest mates, Westminster students are never out of fun things to do-even during a pandemic! Student club meetings and other activities looked a little different this year, with masking and Zoom meetings required. It took some getting used to. But overall, most Martlets would agree that except for the quarantine periods campus was buzzing with a variety of things to do, thanks to many clubs, our form deans and class officers, and Mrs Griffith and the Student Activities Council. For several years, Mr Tony Griffith has been the Dean of Student Life here at on the Hill. Often he is the first faculty member students meet when we arrive here for orientation. He has worked hard to make sure our dorm life is happy and healthy, and he's been there with a caring word to help many a Martlet through the adjustment to living away from home. We are lucky to have a highly dedicated faculty, but nobody puts more time and heart into looking out for each "little dude" here at Westminster. 84

Following the campus’ and the world’s shutdown last spring, the administration was tasked with designing a new dining hall plan within the CDC’s guidelines while also maintaining the tradition and connectivity of the Armstrong Dining Hall. Many new protocols and safety precautions had to be implemented and the dining hall staff have worked tirelessly to accomplish an environment in which the community can enjoy meals and feel safe doing so. One of the biggest protocols to accommodate was social distancing. The head of dining services, Mr. Greaves explained “We loved Family style but, It was hard from being able to seat 480 guests at once to only 120.” Along with the change in table occupancy, came a shift in the flow of the dining hall; 6-foot marks were placed on the floor to maintain social distancing in the newly implemented lines of the dining hall lobby and servery. The meal monitor, Mrs. Phillips commented, “The servery is wide enough for multiple lines of students to maintain six-foot distancing while selecting their food.” Despite these changes, the traditions of the dining hall have been maintained. While there is no longer family-style dining, the new table arrangements allow for two community members to connect and converse mask-free. This opportunity is something many students and faculty appreciate given that it is one of the only times people can talk face to face without a barrier. The Armstrong Dining Hall continues to be a place that brings the Westminster community together and fosters a sense of togetherness that is especially valuable given these circumstances. 89

A word from the John Hay Society Q: What does chapel mean to you? What impact has it had? A: Chapel is a place for the whole community to gather and take a break from the hustle of our daily lives. It's like a little haven from the stress and schoolwork that can be overwhelming. The chapel has given me time to reflect back on my day, week, etc, and appreciate other people's stories. It has really opened my eyes to the experiences of others and how you never truly know what someone is going through.
At left: Socially distanced chapel spectators. Students and faculty who delivered chapel talks included, left to right, Ms Mayopoulos, who spoke about how she used Spanish to reach people in meaningful community action, the Black Affinity Group who generously shared insights into their experiences at Westminster and in their communities, Mr Williams, Mr Rasheed, Mr Huguley and Mr Pringle, who gave a series of roundtable discussions of their experience as Black male educators. Memorable talks were also given by Olivia Goldstuck, Hunter Hoogkamp, and Aliie Masthay.
Q: What do you love about chapel? A: I love that Chapel never fails to amaze me. Each time I enter the Chapel and hear a story, I grow to appreciate that time even more and the willingness of the speaker to share their story. I also love the people in John Hay and the small, close-knit community that forms. Q: How has chapel changed this year with the pandemic? A: Chapel is now a lot less frequent and the whole teacher and student body are not able to fit inside the Chapel. Except for when we have four hours in between classes and our boarder friends are in their dorms...

Fourth Form
Hi! We're still in the library because day students don't really go anywhere else. This is one of Armour's beautiful study rooms. You can do anything here: from Zoom meetings to making TikToks, you don't ever need to leave the library. They're also a great place for an impromptu nap!

Fifth Form
We've moved down to the first floor of the library now! It's decorated for every season! This is where the really cool kids hang out, if you couldn't tell. We have lots of amenities down here: the printer, Mrs. Stevens, crossword puzzles galore, and you can even find the occasional dog! There's also books if you're into that.

Sixth Form
Our last stop on the tour is Lobdell Reading Room, a popular hangout spot for only the coolest in the class of 2021. Though it is a "silent" room, don't let that fool you. It's the loudest spot on campus! Though it looks a little different from last you, it's still the only place that you can find someone cramming for their math test and someone else practicing their cartwheels.

From the day student lounge our freshman year all the way to Lobdell (a full 30 steps away), we senior day students have really explored all corners of campus. Thanks for tagging along on our tour!

Jordy Nelson
It has been a crazy four years together. I suppose "crazy" is an often cited word to describe a high school experience because it encapsulates all of its aspects - the good, the bad, and the ugly. However, I think ours has been particularly unique. No one would have thought that a global pandemic would come in to thwart many of our individual and collective plans and goals for our senior year. Although much of what we will look back on, especially related to this year, has been skewed by this virus, it in no way defines us. We are a creative, intellectual, athletic, and passionate group of individuals. Yet, even more importantly, we are a group of incredible people that have made so many positive contributions to the communities which we are a part of. Nothing can ever take these qualities we have that are so special away from us. Over the last four years, we have watched each other, through our successes, failures, and a ton of adversity, grow to incredible heights. We have formed memories that will last long after we leave the hill, and built relationships with both students and faculty that will shape our lives forever. While I am sad that the inevitable ending of our Westminster days is nearly here, and I have yet to accept the reality of the many shortcomings of this past school year, I couldn't be more sure that each of us is leaving the hill with a multitude of experiences that will allow us to accomplish incredible things, both in college and beyond. I love each and every one of you, and will forever be grateful to have been a part of this special group of people.

To the Class of 2021,

Mr Rasheed has been with the class of 2021 since their first moments as a Martlet, whether they arrived as a PG or a Third Former. The Class of 2021 is proud to be his first graduating class as a dean, and we thank him for always wanting the best for us, and expecting the best from us, over these four years.
A note from Sixth Form Dean, Mr A-men Rasheed Dear Class of 2021: You did it! I’m proud of you. From day one, I have done my absolute best to hear you, support you, and serve you. I will never forget these four years with you. It has been my honor and privilege to watch you grow as scholars, athletically, in all realms of the arts—but most importantly: in
your character. This year in particular has been incredibly difficult; however, I have been nothing short of amazed to see so many of you seize the moment to create wonderful memories, and help make this community a better place in spite of this pandemic. I’d like to personally thank our
Prefect Board for your endless energy and input. Many of you have been together since the beginning. Your leadership has made all the difference. 2021, the best form: I love you, and I will miss you. Thank you for allowing me to learn and grow with you. I wish you all the best! Mr. Rasheed

Advice for your Customer is allowed to have objects outside of the margin.
What do our Sixth Formers most wish they knew back when they began their time at Westminster? From the nostalgic, to the practical, to the sublime, we have collected the wisdom they shared from four years here on the Hill. They have clearly learned a lot that will serve them well in college, and in life.
