MEET SUPERINTENDENT DR. PAMELA SWANSON Welcome to Westminster Public Schools, I am so pleased to have the opportunity to tell you about our school district and share with you why I think it is such a special place. Every person in Westminster Public Schools (WPS) embraces our motto, “Where Education is Personal” and all of us are committed to ensuring that every student rises to their full potential. We believe the most important day for all students is the day after graduation. Our commitment to personalized instruction and a true Competency Based System (CBS) allows some students to move more quickly though their education, while others may take more time to master a learning topic. Parents with more than one child know their children learn differently and appreciate a school system that realizes this as well. You can learn more about CBS and why we think it is the best way to educate children on page 17. In 2019, I was honored to be named Colorado Superintendent of the Year by the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE). As I said when I accepted the award, it was only possible because of the amazing team that supports me. As you look through our enrollment guide, know that all of our school principals welcome the opportunity to talk with you and give you a personalized tour of their building. We are an open enrollment district meaning you can choose the school that is the perfect fit for your family’s needs. Again, thank you for considering Westminster Public Schools, Where Education is Personal. Kindest regards, Dr. Pamela Swanson

In 2019, District Administration magazine selected Westminster Public Schools as one of just 34 districts across the country to be honored as a District of Distinction. The magazine wrote: “These districts have developed innovative programs to support students in their education and well beyond the classroom. We hope our readers are inspired by the efforts of these honorees to create successful initiatives in their own districts.”

Why Westminster Public Schools? WPS has created a school district that is responsive to the needs of all children. Every student is pushed to fulfill their unique potential and given the tools to lead a successful life so they can support their family and give back to their community. “Where Education is Personal” is more than a catchy phrase, it is an approach to education that works for all students. WPS believes the most important day in a student’s life is the DAY AFTER GRADUATION!

Competency Based System CBS requires students to prove mastery and deep understanding of a topic before moving to a new learning level. WPS is a recognized leader in bringing competency based education to public schools.

1

stronG neighborhood schools Our neighborhood schools are built around a strong sense of community and place a high value on the personal relationships developed between principals and teachers and the families they serve.

2

Innovation & Magnet Schools WPS offers schools focusing on STEM, International Studies, the Arts and a unique Academy with a special emphasis on personal responsibility and giving back to the community. WPS also offers several PK-8 schools for families who prefer a different option for their children.

Early Childhood Education All elementary schools offer preschool opportunities and free full-day kindergarten. WPS also has Early Learning Centers providing daycare for students as young as three months through four-years-old.

Career Technical Education The CTE Program prepares students to walk off the graduation stage and into a well-paying job. Not all students want or need a four year college education and the district’s CTE program connects students to industry leaders and technical college opportunities.

Future Center The Future Center at Westminster High School serves students of all ages as they begin to consider career and post-secondary opportunities. Many students are able to receive college credits through concurrent education programs with local schools of higher education.

Future Plan

It’s the way students learn about who they are, what kind of life they want, and how to get there! Includes preparation for careers and college.

Beginning in 6th grade, talk with your child about his or her Future Plan at the start of each semester.

• Apprenticeship On-the-job career

The SAT is a test that helps determine where students can enroll in college, what financial assistance they may earn, or what path they take in the military. The PSAT is a practice test that helps your child prepare for the SAT. A strong SAT score can help students show they’re ready for a job; qualify for scholarships at technical, two-year, and four-year colleges; get accepted at more colleges and universities; test out of college classes; and have more choices in the military. Starting in 8th grade, make sure your child practices for the SAT for 45 minutes each week!

Careers and College Start in High School

Students can explore careers and college coursework while they’re still in high school! Many FREE programs can help them earn tuition-free college credit and gain hands-on work experience. Saving them time and money after high school, no matter what their plans are!

There is Help to Pay for College

There are two types of help — “financial aid” is based on your family’s income, and “scholarships” are largely based on what your student accomplishes in high school. Financial aid includes loans, grants and work study. It’s first-come, firstserved, so the earlier you apply, the better! Scholarships are up to your student: working hard in school can mean receiving FREE money for college that doesn’t have to be paid back!

7

Beginning in 9th grade, start exploring scholarships. Attend a financial-aid workshop in the fall of 12th grade. Apply for financial aid, ideally by December 1 of 12th grade.

Help your child keep all options open!

Good attendance, working hard in school and staying at or above grade level in all classes will help with EVERY career and college goal.

WHAT IS A COMPETENCY BASED SYSTEM

Show What You Know

and graduate ready for the real world About Personalized Learning in Your Child’s School Did you know? Your child’s school uses a Competency Based System (CBS) to help teachers customize the way your child learns, according to his or her strengths and challenges. CBS enables all students to:

• Master knowledge and skills—demonstrating confidence and ability in one area of knowledge and skills before moving on to the next • Real-time student information—at any time, parents and teachers can go online to see where a student is excelling and where they need additional time and extra help in order to grow

• Learn at a customized pace—progressing quickly in strength areas, and receiving extra help from teachers in areas of challenge

Literacy is a challenge area, so Luz is getting extra help from teachers as she works in Literacy Level 3. She’s right on track in Science and Social Studies. How Personalized Learning Works The Westminster Public Schools Competency Based System (CBS) presents knowledge and skills as a series of blocks that build up on each other. Students show that they have mastered one block—called a learning target—before moving on to the next. Within each content area, there is a collection of learning targets that make up a performance level. Students complete all of the learning targets within one performance level before moving on to the next level. To graduate, students complete 12 performance levels in each content area. LEVEL

Math Level 2 includes ten learning targets.

To complete a learning target, students must earn a score of 3 or better on a 4-point scale.

Performance Levels

Traditional Approach: All students move through the same content at the teacher’s pace.

Traditional Approach: Students are placed in one grade level according to their age, for the entire year for all subjects.

Personalized Approach: Students learn at a customized pace, mastering groups of knowledge and skills called learning targets. To complete a learning target, students must earn a score of 3 or better on a 4-point scale. A variety of learning targets make up each performance level.

Personalized Approach: Students work in a performance level in each core content area according to their demonstrated abilities.

Example: Math Level 2 includes ten learning targets. A student must earn a score of 3 or better to complete each learning target; they must complete all targets to move on to the next performance level. 18

Example: A typical fourth-grader may work in Math Level 5, Literacy Level 3, Social Studies Level 4 and Science Level 4. This would mean that math is a strength area and literacy is a challenge area.

Student Proficiency Traditional Approach: Students move up one grade level in all subjects each year, regardless of their ability in each subject. Personalized Approach: Students learn at a customized pace. They move from one performance level to the next when they have demonstrated proficiency in all of the learning targets that comprise that level. Students complete Level 12 in all subjects to graduate. Example: A student may complete all of the learning targets in Literacy Level 3, and move on to Literacy Level 4, during the middle of the school year. Or, he may start a new school year continuing his work from the previous year on learning targets in Math Level 2.

JOSEPHINE HODGKINS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY Hodgkins Leadership Academy focuses on meeting our students exactly where they are academically. Our classrooms are learner centered and students learn at their own pace and advance only when they demonstrate proficiency or mastery in all of the Colorado State Standards at their academic level. Advancing to the next level can occur any time during the course of the school year rather than waiting only until they are age appropriate. We build on a student’s strengths and guide them to set and achieve their academic goals. Hodgkins is also a Leadership School, which is based on the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey and the “7 Habits of Happy Kids” by Sean Covey. At Hodgkins, we believe that every student has genius and by using the 7 Habits, our student leaders find their voice and become well rounded individuals who will become amazing citizens in their school community, neighborhoods, cities and the world. Additional community resources such as Book Trust, Reading Partners, Springboard and Celebrate the Beat add depth, value and increased enrichment for our students. We received the 2019 Center of Excellence Award – making Skyline Vista Elementary one of the top performing elementary schools in the North Metro area.

RANUM MIDDLE SCHOOL At Ranum Middle School, home of the Knights, we empower students to excel through their levels as they demonstrate proficiency. Students who advance through the levels have an opportunity to leave Ranum with high school credits. We offer a variety of applied core classes including orchestra and band, choir, art, drama, stagecraft, piano, guitar, physical education, technology, Genius Hour, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and four varieties of STEM. We strongly value Social-Emotional Learning. Upon entering, students are grouped in small Knighthood Families where they develop relationships with a teacher and others in the group throughout their three years here, so that together these students can learn to navigate education at the middle school level. Additionally, students receive direct instruction through our Connections classes in selfmanaging, being an effective participator, teamwork, reflective practices and being future minded. Our students also have multiple opportunities to demonstrate leadership through Where Everybody Belongs (WEB), Student Council and Youth Education and Safety in Schools (YESS). 303.428.9577

HIDDEN LAKE HIGH SCHOOL Hidden Lake High School is a state defined Alternative Education Campus (AEC) serving “High Risk” students for educational success. Hidden Lake believes that rather than “At-Risk” or “High Risk” we identify students as “At-Promise,” aligning with the Reaching At-Promise Students Association. We have a firm belief that, “ By identifying students as ‘At-Promise,’ we accentuate the belief that despite difficulties, all students can succeed.” This is the first step in re-engaging students and encouraging re-enrollment of out-of-school youth. We specialize in credit recovery and acceleration while maintaining a consistent focus upon building and maintaining relationships with the student and family. To accomplish this, we have the ability to customize schedules with day and delivery options that range from brick and mortar, independent study and online classes.
