arts HEAVENS ABOVE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE UNIVERSE FROM THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE THE GALLERY COMMITTEE of The Rye Arts Center is honored to host the traveling exhibition "Heavens Above: Photographs of the Universe from the Hubble Space Telescope,” at The Rye Arts Center from January 13 through February 21, 2009.

This remarkable exhibition of thirty large-scale, illuminated images teaches us about the wonders of the universe and touches our souls. Each photograph is a cosmic canvas of stars being born, stars at the end of life, swirling masses of galaxies and mysterious celestial clouds. Organized as a joint project between the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art of the Midland Center for the Arts in Michigan and NASA's Space Telescope Science Institute of Baltimore, "Heavens Above" is a rich sensory and educational experience. The Rye Arts Center invites you to a special evening designed around "Heavens Above:" Cosmic Pizza Night takes place on Tuesday, February 3rd from 6:30 – 8:30 pm and is formatted for teens and adults. The night's events include a walk through the exhibition with docents who will explore the aesthetic and scientific aspects of the images, as well as pizza. RSVPs for Cosmic Pizza Night are recommended. $8.00 per person. School groups are invited to visit The Rye Arts Center for a docented tour created for grades 4-12. Students receive a hands-on experience of the wonders and beauty of astrophotography. The tour includes an imagination-stirring session aimed at enhancing creative writing skills. Available every Wednesday throughout the exhibition, except February 19. Limited Space and availability. By reservation only. The steering committee of this exhibition consists of members of The Rye Arts Center Gallery Committee, exhibition chair Elyse Faltz, gallery committee chair Marilyn Gasparini, Charlie Gibson and Larry Faltz, representing Westchester Amateur Astronomers.
