eading shouldn’t stop when school’s out. To make reading a priority year-round, Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company, is encouraging millions of kids across the country to participate in the Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza. Summer is a pivotal time for families and communities to come together to support students’ reading skills by encouraging kids to keep reading and ensure kids have access to books while school is out of session. Research shows that kids who do not read during the summer months are more likely to feel the “summer slide” — the learning loss that takes place during the long break from school. Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza empowers kids to unlock book access for other kids by reading and tracking minutes on the online “challenge” experience or participating in local book drives or both! Through the power of kids helping kids, Scholastic will donate at least 200,000 books to book deserts across the country and together with local partners, enable kids to give back in their own communities. There are three major components of Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza: • Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge • Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Give Back • Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Celebrations “The Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza program unites students, educators, parents, public librarians, community partners and booksellers in a nation-wide movement to get books to kids in need during the summer, keeping every child reading,” said Stephanie Smirnov, Executive Vice President of Global Corporate Communications. THE READING CHALLENGE The Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge is a free online reading program specifically designed to help students turn the “summer slide” into the “summer leap” by helping kids discover the power and joy of reading for fun. And this year, every minute read and entered will help to unlock book donations from Scholastic through the Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Give Back. The Challenge officially kicks off on Monday, May 6th and over the course of 18 weeks, kids can enter their summer reading minutes and unlock digital rewards by completing weekly reading activities, gain access to book excerpts, videos, and content from beloved titles such as Clifford the Big Red Dog®, Captain Underpants, Dog Man, The Baby-Sitters Club, The Bad Guys, Geronimo Stilton and more! Data from the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™: 7th Edition reveals that 77% of kids ages 6–17 and 94% of parents believe reading books over the summer will help me/my child during the school year. And for over a decade, kids have collectively entered millions upon millions of minutes between May and September through the Challenge. In 2018, kids read an impressive 135,865,170 million minutes! Whether you’re a parent interested in signing up your child, a teacher looking to get your whole school involved, or a public librarian or community partner organization leader hoping to start a reading group, you can get started as early as April 8th to pre-register with the Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge at scholastic.com/summer Educators, public librarians and community partners can register students for the Challenge and together work towards earning “Best

in State” and Top honors for most minutes read! THE GIVE BACK The Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Give Back empowers kids to unlock book access for other kids. Every minute read during the summer counts on the Summer Reading Challenge website, as kids work together to reach Give Back minute milestones. Upon reaching 25, then 50 and then 100 million minutes, Scholastic will donate a minimum of 200,000 books to book deserts across the country! What are “book deserts”? While you may have heard of “food deserts”—areas where people face limited access to supermarkets, grocery stores and other places that sell fresh, whole foods—book deserts are another detrimental yet more unfamiliar geographical experience that can have a lasting impact on academic outcomes. Once children are out of the classroom, where can they turn to for reading materials if they don’t have access to any at home? The most common answers are a public library or bookstore, but these can still present their own challenges. While many communities simply don’t have either of these options available to residents, other communities face barriers such as limited public transportation services, working hours or library staffing. In schools, a classroom or school library is right at a child’s fingertips; in book deserts during the summer, reading materials can be completely out of a child’s grasp. In Game Changer! Book Access for All Kids, authors Donalyn Miller and Colby Sharp describe how plentiful and meaningful access to books both at school and at home goes a long way in ensuring that all children reach their full potential. “When they have access to books, they read more and they read better” (Miller & Sharp, 2018). This summer, kids can also help close the gap in access through local book drives. Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Give Back boxes will bring the experience to retailers in select communities that are participating in the Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Celebrations. THE CELEBRATIONS The Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Celebrations will take place at participating stores and libraries nationwide to bring communities together in the spirit of giving back while encouraging every child to keep reading. Families who attend will be dazzled by a fun and engaging event that brings literacy to life! Readers can engage in activities, photo ops, and giveaways based on their favorite characters and series. Select events will even have appearances by both Clifford the Big Red Dog and Dog Man. All events are anchored by a Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Give Back book drive to collect books for a local charity partner of the retailer’s choice. Every minute read during the local celebration events can be entered on the Summer Reading Challenge website to help reach minute milestones that unlock book donations throughout the country—enabling kids to help other kids near and far. Check scholastic.com/readapalooza for an event list to find a celebration. “Not only does the new Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza campaign tap into children’s natural sense of altruism, it also brings summer reading to new audiences and encourages ongoing learning,” said Smirnov. “With the Give Back element, Scholastic is helping bring books directly to the areas that need them most. As we’ve discovered in the Kids & Family Reading Report, creating a literacy-rich environment for children by surrounding them with books makes a difference.”

UCONN PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER

For over 50 years, Syracuse University Summer College has been giving high school students the opportunity to explore potential careers and college majors through its renowned pre-college programs. Students can pursue their artistic, intellectual, and professional passions while living the life of a college student on the Syracuse University campus in scenic upstate New York. Credit and noncredit pre-college programs are offered in ten of Syracuse University’s schools and colleges. Areas of study reflect the richness and diversity of the majors and minors at the University. Programs are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 weeks long and led by Syracuse University faculty and instructors. A significant part of the Summer College experience is the opportunity to live in a residence hall with high school students from around the world. It’s a safe environment where friendships are formed and worldviews are broadened. The live-in residential staff is trained to create an atmosphere that encourages Summer College students to adjust quickly and comfortably to the college environment. The staff includes at least one Residence Director and up to three Assistant Residence Directors who are full-time residence life professionals. These individuals usually hold, or are working toward, advanced degrees in the field of student affairs. Field trips and activities on campus give students the opportunity to relax, have fun, and make new friends. Summer College students have access to Syracuse University recreational facilities, including sports fields and courts, gyms with workout equipment, game rooms, a pool, and an ice skating rink. While the primary focus of Summer College is educational, the residence hall staff organizes a range of social events and activities so students with widely varying interests can find opportunities to take a break and socialize. Room and board are included in the overnight summer program costs. Summer College students eat in a university dining hall as part of their meal plan. Marshall Street, which is home to coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants, is also a popular destination to grab a bite with friends. Students can walk or rent a bicycle to get around campus. Syracuse University Summer College 2019 session dates are June 29 to August 9. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and programs fill quickly, so students are encouraged to apply soon. Students work with and learn from University faculty while exploring the nuances of college life. Interacting with peers in the residence halls and faculty in the classroom provide students the opportunity to create individual successes. We consider a student successful in Pre-College Summer if they use the opportunity to learn more about their future aspirations, find that the course they enrolled in is a good (or bad) fit to pursue as a potential college major, or feel better prepared for learning and growing in a college or university setting. Through supportive and caring faculty members, our students are able to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment while attending Pre-College Summer. This relates to students’ readiness to learn in a college setting and the ability to see how their passions may transform into a college major. Dr. Kimberly Bergendahl, Assistant Professor in Residence from the Political Science Department and Pre-College Summer faculty of the Pre-Law course, has had wonderful experiences with Pre-College Summer students, both during and after their time at UConn Pre-College Summer. Dr. Bergendahl has connected with students during their time in the program, and is currently working with a former PCS student, now a UConn honors student, studying political science and performing undergraduate research. This continued collaboration is an example of how our faculty members can foster incredibly transformative learning experiences through the Pre-College Summer Program that help students build connections and guide them toward a path to success. Interested in joining us? Apply now! The admissions committee reviews completed applications and admits students to UConn Pre-College Summer on a rolling basis. LAWRENCEVILLE SUMMER SCHOLARS

Every summer at Wyoming Seminary, students come together from around the world to grow as creative performers in Music, Dance, Theatre, and the Visual Arts in the Summer at Sem Creative Arts programs. Summer at Sem offers day and boarding programs for domestic and international students ages 12-18. The Music Festival program is unique in a couple of aspects. We offer chamber music, private lessons, large ensemble rehearsals, and more; the idea is to give students as many different types of music-making experiences as possible. Music Festival students also take courses such as “Mindfulness and Wellbeing for Musicians” and “Music Entrepreneurship” to empower them to think about how music will fit into their lives in the long term. Guest artists and

Be Here. Be Known. Be Incredible. For three weeks in July, Lawrenceville Summer Scholars encourages middle school and early high school boys and girls to experience boarding school life. We challenge students to engage in active inquiry through the Harkness pedagogy while developing the habits of a life-long commitment to personal and community responsibility through the House system. In the Lower School, which is designed for sixth through eighth graders, Summer Scholars choose two classes (one in the morning and one in the afternoon), and they take those classes for the threeweek summer program sessions. Course options include Robotics, Speech & Debate, Creative Writing for Academic Success, Shark Tank, Creative Portraiture, and dozens of other options. In the Upper School, ninth and tenth grade students will study and work with a team of Lawrenceville faculty and Harkness teachers, both on and off campus, around the interdisciplinary theme of Revolution! Politics, History, and Disease, which will allow them to take advantage of Lawrenceville’s locale and history. In alignment with the Lawrenceville School curriculum, upper school students will take a required Humanities course (expository and creative writing, public speaking, reading) and a STEAM course, and they will complete a group research project of The Summer Scholars Difference. With limited enrollment and the low student-toteacher ratio, each student receives individual attention in order to flourish in a safe and supportive environment. The school day balances class time and outdoor fun, and in all activities, students will be encouraged to think critically, problem solve, collaborate, socialize, and discover their passions in order to leave the program with 21st century skills. Summer Scholars, who are both residential and day students, come from around the world and many states to experience life at The Lawrenceville School. The combination of academic and school tradition, such as communal meals and house competitions, make the Summer Scholars program memorable. Summer Scholars are authentically engaged learners who benefit from rigorous, experiential classroom experiences. As one scholar said, “My favorite part of Summer Scholars was meeting students from other countries and learning.” Lawrenceville Summer Scholars 2500 Main Street Lawrenceville, NJ 08648 609-620-6683 Summerscholars.lawrenceville.org

New York City: LMHQ (Financial District) Dwight School (Upper West Side) The Kew-Forest School (Forest Hills, Queens) Greenwich, CT: Greenwich Academy

What are your children creating this summer? In Upperline Code’s summer immersive coding courses, students learn to program with the same languages and tools used by actual developers. By the end of each course, students will have built a fullstack web application, mastered the basic structures of computer science, and had a lot of fun! We have courses available for students from ages 13 - 18. No experience is required -- we’ve taught students who are brand new to coding and students who have already taken AP computer science with equal success. We are computer science education experts, with experience training computer science teachers and running courses for organizations like Google, the New York City Department of Education, and Prep for Prep. We pride ourselves in our ability to

hire and train instructors who can create an environment where every student can learn to code and love the process. Our pedagogy is centered on challenging, engaging, and collaborative projects. Our current course offerings include Modern Web Development with JavaScript (JavaScript 1), Python Programming for the Web (Python 1), Data Science with Advanced Python (Python 2), Advanced JavaScript with React.js (JavaScript 2), and iOS Development with Swift (Swift 1). Not sure which course is right for your child? Give us a call at (646) 653-2633 for a free consultation. Learning. Transformed. You’ve heard of the dreaded “summer slide” – but your child won’t experience it here. The Summer Programs at Eagle Hill School are designed for students ages 5-14 who need additional learning support and/or have a diagnosed language-based learning difference. A continuation of the philosophy and strategies for learning found in our full-year program, learning is multi-sensory, students are grouped according to skills rather than grade level, and there is a specific focus on finding innovative methods to encourage learning. Eagle Hill offers two morning academic programs (one for students entering kindergarten or first grade and one for students entering grade two or higher). The academic programs run from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Class sizes are small and classes are taught primarily by members of Eagle Hill’s exceptionally trained faculty. Each student participates in a language arts/tutorial class each day, as well as three additional classes in: reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills. Students enrolled in one of our academic programs have the option to sign up for an afternoon activity program, which runs from 1-3:30 p.m. This program immerses children in a fun and energetic program with field trips, games, crafts, and more. Students are encouraged to take risks and actively participate in a variety of group activities while fostering positive relationships with staff and peers. 45 Glenville Road Greenwich, CT 06831 (203) 622-9240 July 1-31 (except July 4 and 5) Early bird pricing is available until May 1, 2019. Students are able to learn and have fun with like-minded peers while also getting a taste of college life. Expert instruction Instructors at Education Unlimited are not only subject-matter experts and industry professionals, but they are also educators who value the importance of summer learning for middle and high school students. Our instructors are passionate about the subjects they teach and enjoy devoting their time helping guide our students on their personal and academic journeys. Innovative Curriculum & Hands-on Learning All programs at Education Unlimited seek to immerse students far beyond sitting in a lecture taking notes. No matter what program they choose, students learn to think critically, collaborate with peers and classmates, communicate their opinions and knowledge effectively to others both in written and verbal form and hopefully walk away with a life-long love of learning. Small Class Sizes By keeping class sizes small and student-to-teacher ratios around an average of about 1-to-8, Education Unlimited ensures that students will be able to get much more one-on-one attention during the course of their programs. Not only do students get plenty of time in the classroom for guidance and evaluation of their work, but they also benefit from being able to spend time outside the classroom with their instructors during meals, excursions, and recreation time. Future mentors can be found, and students learn what it means to have a truly memorable teacher. University Campus Locations Students in an Education Unlimited program are able to enjoy a college experience while getting a taste of college life by staying in the residence halls and eating in the dining halls. Programs are held on the campuses of Yale, Connecticut College, MIT, Georgetown, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Caltech. { I N D EPE N D E N T S C H OO L G U I D E } AVON OLD FARMS

THE HUN SCHOOL OF PRINCETON

Nestled among Cotswold-inspired architecture on 860 acres in the Farmington Valley, Avon Old Farms stands as the leader in preparing young men for higher education. The school’s founder, Theodate Pope Riddle, was one of America’s first, successful, female architects, and she serves as the cornerstone of our school’s motto, Aspirando et Perseverando -- To Aspire and to Persevere. Mrs. Riddle’s fortitude and vision in 1927 created the groundwork for an institution that challenges boys in the pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement. Throughout this process, students find unwavering support and create fraternal bonds that will last a lifetime. At the core of the Avon Old Farms experience are dedicated and passionate teachers that understand the intricacy of educating boys. Teachers demonstrate expertise in their disciplines, and they also contextualize learning; this helps students to explore meaningful roles as men in today’s complex society. Small classes allow teachers to cater to the learning needs of each individual. As relational learners, boys derive tremendous benefit from faculty that serves as advisors, teachers, mentors, and coaches. Athletics is an honored tradition at Avon Old Farms where boys learn the value of teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship. Experienced coaches, state of the art facilities, strong competition, and countless athletes at the collegiate and professional level shoulder our athletic program. Each year, Avon Old Farms competes as one of the best programs in the United States. Avon Old Farms possesses a top-tier curriculum in visual and performing arts. Our rich and varied programs provide many opportunities for boys to express themselves creatively. From our top choral group, the Riddlers, to our exquisite visual artists, students are consistently honored on local, regional, and national levels for their talent. Avon Old Farms is a special place for young men to explore drawing, painting, singing, or acting. The College Counseling Office is fully engaged with every student, which allows us to be one of the most successful college preparatory schools in single-sex education. We identify and facilitate the proper matches between Avon students and institutions of higher learning. The foundation of Avon Old Farms, and all that the school offers, will always be rooted in our core values of brotherhood, scholarship, integrity and sportsmanship; these lessons are fundamental to success at Avon and stay with our graduates for a lifetime. Each boy at Trinity-Pawling is assessed for the effort he devotes to a given endeavor: academics, athletics, dormitory responsibilities, civic engagement, attendance, and extracurricular programs. Hopkins School is an independent, coeducational day school of 700+ students in grades 7-12. Located on a 108-acre campus overlooking New Haven, the School takes pride in its classic academic curriculum, enhanced by innovative programs, arts and athletics and community service. Here are the core beliefs that Hopkins embraces. We think intellectual curiosity is the most powerful energy in the world. We’ve created a culture dedicated to celebrating intellectual curiosity. We believe that education should be a multifaceted pursuit of the whole intellect, where a diverse community of individuals bond together to inspire each other, challenge each other, explore, discover and achieve. We think questions can be more exciting than answers. The ability to originate precise and probing questions is the foundation of intellectual curiosity at Hopkins. In practice, this means Hopkins students challenge assumptions, investigate facts and experiment with new approaches. We believe learning to ask better questions results in better thinking and better answers. We think a vibrant community starts by embracing individuality. We believe an endless variety of viewpoints, traditions, beliefs, talents and styles is what makes up a stimulating, healthy intellectual community. While excellence is the common goal,

students are encouraged to be who they are and contribute to a culture of thought that is enriched by individual perspectives, inspiring to all. We think intellectual growth is a shared journey. Everyone has ups and downs. At Hopkins, we navigate them together. Students and teachers join forces to meet challenges. The results: close friendships, the gratification that goes with shared success, the development of grit and perseverance and a lifetime of learning set in motion. We think engineers can be athletes, artists can be scientists, and mathematicians can be actors. We believe a well-formed intellect is the sum of many experiences. Each student is encouraged and empowered to explore far and wide through academics, art, social activities and service opportunities. FORK UNION MILITARY ACADEMY

CLARK UNIVERSITY

Fork Union Military Academy (www.ForkUnion.com) was founded in 1898 by a prominent Baptist preacher, Dr. William E. Hatcher, from Richmond, Virginia. Since its beginning, the Academy has changed with the times, but, since 1950, two things haven’t changed: the school’s mission teaching Christian values to young men of all faiths, and its unique education program that has proven over time to be highly effective, the “One-Subject Plan” of study. The OneSubject Plan affords the Academy’s high school-aged cadets the opportunity to study and focus on one course at a time, remaining with one teacher every day for the entire school day, encompassing 7-weeks of instruction. Intensive immersion in this one-course-ata-time approach results in greater understanding, comprehension, and application. This program, accompanied by an hour and a half of supervised homework time each evening, helps to promote success among our cadets. Because of this program, we find that our students’ grades and test scores improve, their work ethic strengthens considerably, and they are better prepared for life beyond high school. Our graduates attend America’s very best colleges and universities and more than 100 have been invited to

Founded in 1887, Clark University is a community of passionate individuals who put education into practice to create positive change in the world. This is our legacy, and our future. Clark gives problem-solvers, collaborators, and status quo disruptors the skills and experience to create positive change everywhere: in the world, in the community, and in themselves. Here, we celebrate difference, encourage forward thinking, and nurture enduring connections among students, faculty, and staff. Clark students engage in an exceptionally rigorous learning environment fueled by professors’ own research interests, high standards, and dedication to teaching. Through our pioneering education model, LEEP (Liberal Education and Effective Practice), they engage in life-changing world and workplace experiences that allow them to confront complex problems, collaborate with faculty, learn directly from industry experts, and explore topics of global consequence. Clark is located in Worcester, Mass., which offers the intimate, affordable, and manageable scale of a small city balanced with the pulse and rhythms of big-city life — all within an hour of Boston and Providence, and three hours from New York. Enrolling approximately 2,200 undergraduate and 890 graduate students, Clark is featured in Loren Pope’s influential book, “Colleges That Change Lives.” Recent rankings that acknowledge Clark’s growing reputation include U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges, #66 in National Universities; Times Higher Education, #7 in the World’s Best Small Universities; Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, #33 in Best Values in Private Colleges; and Princeton Review, #11 in Top 25 Schools for Making an Impact. Through our ClarkCONNECT network, alumni, faculty, and Clark partners provide career mentorship, expertise, and internship opportunities to help prepare students for life after college. Because the student-to-faculty ratio at Clark is 10:1 and the average class size is 21, professors know their students well. And with approximately 1,000 international students from more than 80 countries, our students encounter a variety of cultures, traditions, religions, and political ideologies. In tandem with its excellent graduate programs and research institutes, the University offers a unique cost-saving opportunity: Eligible students can earn both a bachelor’s and an accelerated master’s degree from one of 14 different programs, with the fifth year tuition-free. No matter the path, at Clark students develop the creativity, adaptability, and resilience to translate their passions into remarkable careers and purposeful lives. They graduate with the skills employers demand and the world needs, prepared to live the University’s motto: “Challenge Convention. Change Our World.” clarku.edu

Study at Cambridge this summer

For centuries, the University of Cambridge has shaped and changed the world through its visionary ideas and groundbreaking discoveries. Its International Summer Programmes (7 July - 17 August 2019), with a reputation for excellent teaching and inspirational courses, reflect this heritage of innovation and tradition. Our open-access programmes are geared towards undergraduates, graduates and other adults. The programmes are made up of over 200 courses and are all taught by leading Cambridge academics and guest subject specialists. Some students stay for all six weeks, others for just one or two. Classroom sessions are supplemented by plenary lectures and evening talks, with visits and laboratory sessions included in some courses. To add to the experience, you can stay in one of five historic Cambridge Colleges and get to know fellow students at meals in magnificent dining halls. Long summer days allow you time to explore the Colleges and vibrant city centre, relax in a punt on the river, enjoy a traditional English tea at Grantchester, attend concerts, ceilidhs, and weekend excursions. Our Pre-University Programme has been designed specifically for 16-18 year-olds seeking to study at any of the world’s leading universities and to help with the transition from school to university study.
