AMANDA M. ’17 (DIPLOMAT) An early childhood spent in Ethiopia shaped Amanda’s world view, which remains global and externally focused to this day. She is interested in social justice, is working toward an internship at the UN, and hopes to be a diplomat. According to Amanda, the Westridge community inspires her to “always be aware of the impact I want to make on the world, to always challenge myself, and be intentional in my actions.”

2015-2016 Annual Report

FROM THE

head & board chair Dear Members of the Westridge Community, When educators are asked why they do what they do, they often comment on how they are inspired by their students and that through them, they touch the future. Though you may not teach, when you support Westridge, you too affect the future in ways more expansive and enduring than you may have considered. From a very literal perspective, giving to the Annual Fund—The Westridge Difference—provides critical funds for each school year; but its true impact rests not only in the here and now, but in the future. The programs and opportunities you support now enable our students to grow and thrive, to set their sights high, and to be among the next generation of leaders. Students such as Alexandria Myers ’14, a legislative intern on Capitol Hill who plans a career fighting for women and girls’ education internationally. Or Elizabeth Oldknow-Huttinger ’68, the 2016 Ranney Award winner who benefited from gifts to the Annual Fund as a student, went on to dedicate her life to public health, and led the highly successful effort to eradicate schistosomiasis, one of the most devastating parasitic diseases in the world, second only to malaria. This year, your generosity to the Annual Fund exceeded our goal with a record $1,247,835 million in contributions. Indeed, parent giving grew by 23 percent and giving from alumnae jumped by 25 percent. We are grateful for your continued support and understanding of the critical importance of the Annual Fund in fulfilling our mission. 2015-2016 was also the final year of the “quiet” phase of The Campaign for Our Second Century. As of October 2016, nearly $10 million has

been raised toward the ultimate $15 million campaign goal to fortify the school’s endowment. Gifts to the endowment are investments in the future of Westridge. The fund is invested, growing each year to ensure the financial viability of Westridge and its vision for the next century of leadership and excellence in girls’ education. Details of the Campaign, which entered its public phase in October of this year, can be found on page 4 of this report. We thank all of you, our community of friends, for your continued generous financial support as well as for your time, your expertise, and the trust you have placed in us. It is with full hearts and a bright vision for the future that we thank you for tending to the prospects of our girls and our school. We are so fortunate to be part of a community that embraces our shared responsibility; a community of people who realize that schools and families collaborate in a labor of love and that all of our futures will be in the capable hands of our truly amazing young women. Sincerely,

Linda D. Tolbert Chair, Board of Trustees

Elizabeth J. McGregor Head of School

AVERY B. ’24 (DESIGNER/ASTRONAUT) This future fashion designer and/or astronaut has been inspired by her aunt, a dress designer, as well as by watching astronaut training videos, which she has done with her mom since she was little. She loves science and thinks going into space would be incredible, but might also offer some direction for the astronauts’ wardrobes.

campaign for our Second Century

O

ver the course of the quiet phase of the campaign, leadership gifts totaling $9.7 million have been made to The Campaign for Our Second Century, a $15 million effort to augment substantially the School’s endowment. This is a major step toward achieving our strategic goal of financial sustainability and we honor all of our early campaign donors who are listed on the following pages.

Our endowment is comprised of invested funds that generate interest or dividend income annually, a portion of which supports the School’s budget, providing a stable source of revenue for decades to come. This is only the second endowment campaign in the 100-year history of the school, and it is important that we build this fund now to sustain and expand the excellence of our educational programs for current and future generations of female leaders. A strong endowment relieves annual budget pressure so that we may invest in our program, equitably compensate our talented faculty members, and support an economically diverse community. Importantly, this non-tuition revenue from the endowment helps mitigate the pressure for significant tuition increases, and allows us to look beyond the current year to dream big and pursue our vision for world class girls’ education. Philanthropy has allowed programs such as the STEAMWork Design Studio and our initiative to establish Westridge as the go-to resource for information and best practices in educating girls to be fostered right here at Westridge. With the campaign approaching two thirds of its goal, the public phase of the campaign was announced at a celebratory dinner on October 18. Our goal is to finalize the campaign during calendar year 2017. Adding $15 million to our endowment will nearly double endowment revenue contributed to the school’s operating budget each year to approximately $1.5 million dollars. The impact of a gift to the endowment lives on forever. If you are interested in learning more about how you can support The Campaign for Our Second Century, please contact Director of Advancement Susan Bowers at 626-799-1153 ext. 252.

I always felt like there was something magical about the space that Westridge provided. I am talking about the physical “seat at the table” that allowed us to maintain leadership roles that we might not have had access to in a coeducational setting, but also the metaphorical space that encouraged us to become the unapologetic, wildly eager, and ravenous learners that most of us are. There is something about having access to this space that allowed me to face the rest of the world with a particular drive and gusto. - Zanny Regas ’09. Human Development Coordinator, Westridge School

What I learned from the mentoring inherent in my Westridge education was to be a confident, independent thinker. Owing to the diversity of experience, culture, and physical ability in the student body, the Westridge dialectic is intrinsically rich and able to prepare girls to be confident in challenging situations. I can say that Westridge gave me a voice, confidence, and a passion for learning and examining the world around me. - Elizabeth (Tizzie) Oldknow-Huttinger ’68, Researcher and public health expert whose work led to the cure for human schistosomiasis, a devastating water parasite disease. Much of the time, being a public defender means experiencing your client’s pain and worrying about your client’s future. Once in a while, there is a rush of joy that comes from working hard in the service of a person in need. For me, that joy has its foundation in Westridge—where brilliant educators pushed us to deeper levels of analysis and social consciousness and where magical connections were formed with women who would change the world. - Seema Ahmad ’99, Trial Attorney with the Office of the Federal Public Defender in Los Angeles; Chair, Board of the Muslim Public Affairs Council Rebecca & Peter Knell Jean Lin & Matt Stevens Ingrid & Gregg Logg Mary & Peter Lowin Margarita & Robert Munoz Pilar & Jorge Munoz Shannon & John Petersen Samantha & Marc Sandman Annika & Jeffrey Santoro Wendy & Craig Tanouye Edie Morrison Tyebkhan ’86 & Yosufi Tyebkhan Cheri & Bert Washington Kelly White & David Timoner Laura Hui Xiang & Edward Xuesong Wu Halle & Joseph Yuhan

Westridge taught me to be fearless and to take on any challenge put to me. As a woman who has built her own career on a platform of non-traditional and typically maledominated disciplines like video game audio, game design, and game production, I am passionate about programs that teach and empower women to follow their path wherever it may take them. Westridge empowered me to break down traditional barriers and, in the process, demonstrated to me that I truly could do anything I wanted to do. - Chanel Summers ’87. Pioneering video game designer and producer, Microsoft’s first Audio Technical Evangelist, Co-Founder, Syndicate 17, Director, Experimental Audio Design Lab, USC School of Cinematic Arts and professional drummer.

ADRIAN C. ’23 (SCIENTIST/ENGINEER/ ENTREPRENEUR)

Adrian wants to be a scientist and engineer who gets her start at Tesla before launching a Teslaesque start-up of her own! Her love of science blossomed into STEM after she whizzed through building a National Geographic kit of a robotic spider. And after seeing Inc. Magazine’s Top 500 Entrepreneurs cover story that included several interesting STEM businesses founded by females, she decided that just might be in her future as well.

MEZTLI M. ’22 (ACTRESS) Meztli got her start in acting at the wee age of seven and thinks there may be a career in the field in her future. She loves that acting allows her to be imaginative, to explore other people’s lives and beliefs, and to think about things and perspectives she might not consider in the course of her “real” life.

Westridge does create mindful humans. Even as a dentist, I am able to serve the community with my professional skills. For the last four years, I have worked with Housing Works and Union Station who are helping people get back on their feet. In their road to recovering from difficult years, access to restorative dental care is limited or unavailable. Having a healthy, nice smile is an essential part of self-confidence. Providing people with healthy, happy smiles enables me to use my talents while also improving the quality of life of someone less fortunate. - Mary Chess Abelson ’91, DDS

In Memoriam:

Nancy H. Owen

Former Headmistress

N

ancy Hughes Owen, headmistress of Westridge School from 19771986 and an important figure in the history of Westridge School, passed away April 20, 2016 in Portland, Oregon. Nancy dedicated 19 years to Westridge School, having served as the development director prior to her appointment as headmistress. She is also remembered as an inspirational English teacher by her former junior and senior students. Quick witted and kind, Nancy loved the school and her students. Her daughter and Westridge alumna, Gwyneth Owen ’82, remembers her mother as “a fierce advocate for the advanced education of young women and someone keenly aware, ahead of her time, in the importance of sports for young women.” She also embraced diversity. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Owen, who wrote for the spring 1986 Westridge magazine in honor of Nancy’s retirement, “What I remember most – and most gratefully -- about Nancy’s years at Westridge, is that with all the demands and all the responsibilities that came to her as head, she never failed, at home, to be a warm, sympathetic, and witty person for our children and for me.” And that is how Nancy is remembered by so many. She was a strong woman who was driven by a fierce dedication to the advancement of young women and brought a welcoming acceptance and sense of family to all she did. In 1986 Westridge established the Nancy Hughes Owen Endowed Scholarship Fund to honor Nancy’s retirement. Anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Nancy can send their gift to Westridge School designated for the Nancy H. Owen Scholarship Fund.

A few people in your life are absolute show-stoppers. They show you what it is to be fully alive, they are zingers. Every time you are with them, you are infused with their vigor and energy. And that is Nancy. She is a show-stopper. - Pricilla Dunn Flynn ’47 from the Sprint 1986 Westridge Magazine

An Educational Partnership With Pasadena Public Schools

F

ounded in 1990, Partnership for Success! (PFS!), formerly the Skills Enrichment Program, is a partnership between the Pasadena Unified School District and four local independent schools (Chandler, Westridge, Mayfield Junior, and Polytechnic). Each summer, PFS! provides an intensive, five-week academic enrichment program to approximately 400 public-school students who are chosen by their school principals based on academic promise and financial need. Once students are selected in their fourth grade year, they remain in the program for nine consecutive summers. This long-term commitment between PFS! and its students build their skills in math, science, and language arts. All graduate high school and virtually all graduates of PFS! go on to attend college, most at four-year institutions. Westridge School hosts an all-girls experience for students in grades five and six. During their two summers at Westridge, students take a variety of academic classes to boost their math and verbal skills, preparing for success in middle school. Classes are small (averaging 20 students) and their teachers are joined in the classroom by high school and college-age interns, half of whom are themselves graduates of PFS!. In addition to academic enrichment courses, PFS! students at Westridge have the opportunity to take classes in art, music, multimedia creation, and technology. Field trips provide adventures in the community, and the annual Etiquette Tea provides the girls an opportunity to practice social skills with a featured speaker. Daily physical education classes and Friday swim sessions balance the summer days with exercise. The program is provided at no cost to the student. Funds are raised from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Contributions are made by the four independent schools as well as the Westridge Parent Association. With the generous support of those listed, this valuable and successful program continues to benefit hundreds of students each year.
