The fundamental purpose of Westridge School is to develop in girls their intellectual and creative powers and their unique qualities as individuals. Essential to the school’s purpose is the commitment to be a community that reflects and values diversity, respects individual differences, and responds to a changing, dynamic world. An intellectually engaging and challenging curriculum prepares students to continue their education in college and beyond as discerning, motivated learners who are committed to excellence and goodness in everything they do. The program offers balance among humanities, mathematics and sciences, fine and performing arts, technology and athletics. Westridge strives to develop young women whose joy in learning, personal ideals, commitment to ethical action, social and environmental responsibility, courage and compassion will lead them to meaningful lives as contributing citizens of the larger world. Approved by the Board of Trustees April 8, 2003; Revised August 2006

Westridge School admits students of any race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, tuition assistance programs, athletic, and other school-administered programs.

My family and I are in our ninth year at Westridge – our daughter, Sophie ’13, now in her senior year, is almost officially a Westridge “lifer.” As Westridge parents, my wife Debbie and I have been active in various capacities because we enjoy being part of a community that does so much for our daughter, her friends, and many other girls who have come before and will follow. Throughout our time at Westridge, the school’s willingness to change and adapt has been a core asset to its growth, academic distinction, and all-girls advantage. Institutions that embrace change endure. They grow, evolve, and improve in ways that may not be easy, making success that much more significant and visionary. Westridge is that institution — this school does not shy away from change. As we continue to work on the school’s strategic plan, this is evident in our critical areas of focus: longevity through financial sustainability, outreach and growth through marketing, and academic strength focused on 21st century skills and values. As we look toward the next century, this strategic planning process reminds us of where we are now, helps us to see the bigger picture, and establishes a vision for enhancing an already exceptional Westridge education. In order to achieve a well-rounded perspective, we have reached out to many constituents for their feedback — students, parents, alumnae, employees, and other schools — receiving thoughtful responses that reinforce the school’s strengths and identify areas for improvement upon which we can build.

As an independent school, Westridge is only as strong as the community that supports it. We exceeded our Annual Fund goal of $840,000 by over $25,000 in 2011-2012 and are proud of the 87 percent parent, 90 percent faculty and staff, and 100 percent trustee participation. Alumnae from the Classes of 1945 and 1947 achieved 100 percent participation, and giving from parents of alumnae increased 42 percent from the previous year. We thank all of you for your support! Establishing a strong sense of community has been a priority under Elizabeth McGregor’s leadership. With the support of school, parent, and alumnae leaders, the Westridge community has become more integrated, inclusive, and active. The formation of the Multicultural Parent Collaborative and Westridge Dads’ Club are just some examples of the new ways that Westridge is engaging its community members with one another and the school. Community is also a keystone of the school’s upcoming Centennial in 20132014. Nearing our 100-year milestone is a testament to the legacy, excellence, and longevity of Westridge School. Our Centennial will celebrate the Westridge community, past and present, and salute a century of educational excellence. Working with a diversely talented board deeply committed to the school’s mission, values, and traditions has been an inspiration — I am honored to play an active role in the school’s leadership during this exciting time in Westridge’s history. Thank you for all you do for Westridge. Surgere!

chair’s message 3

The 2011-2012 school year launched with a call to action that is now well integrated into the Westridge lexicon: Be your best, bold self. From Convocation until Commencement, the year revealed innumerable ways in which our Westridge community embraced and demonstrated this powerful theme. The Lower School introduced the Tiger Cub Spirit Club, a squad of enthusiastic 4th, 5th, and 6th graders eager to build school spirit, improve attendance at Westridge games, and learn about athletics and teamwork. The group, organized and coached by Lower School parents, boosted our Upper School athletes during their home games and became a collective group of little sisters cheering on their big sisters. In its inaugural year, the Middle School Debate Team far exceeded expectations. Made up of 7th and 8th graders, the team joined the Rancho California League, competing with area schools including Campbell Hall, Chandler, Clairbourn, Gooden, Mayfield Jr., Polytechnic, Sequoyah, and Waverly. Brand new to debate and ready to make their voices heard, our Middle School girls learned the art of public speaking and how to research and analyze topics, organize ideas, form logical arguments, and stay on topic. In their second tournament of the year, the team earned six trophies. With a strong season, they advanced and won two rounds in the Claremont Invitational Championship.

4

Westridge Tennis had a standout year. For the first time in 27 years, Varsity Tennis won the Prep League title. Junior Varsity Tennis has remained undefeated in Prep League play for three consecutive years! The school rallied around Erica Wu ’14 as she contended for a spot on Team USA competing in table tennis at the 2012 London Olympics. She triumphed, and at 16 years old, now has the distinguished honor of having the title “Olympian” attached to her name in perpetuity. Seventy-one members of the Class of 2012 earned 409 acceptances to 158 different colleges and universities in 35 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Scotland, and the United Kingdom, with 845 submissions to 215 colleges. One hundred percent of the Class of 2012 were admitted to four year colleges and universities. They are attending 51 different colleges in 19 states and the District of Columbia. During its second school year, the Science & Mathematics Building became central to Upper School culture, but also made an impact on the surrounding community. As a result of the thoughtful and purposeful design, Westridge earned three awards for the facility: a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Pasadena & Foothill Chapter; the inaugural Sustainable Innovation Award from the U.S. Green Building Council Los Angeles Chapter; and a commercial design award from the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation. Furthering Westridge’s commitment to sustainability, outside of the integrated “green” features of the Platinum LEED certified science facility, the school also earned a Green City Award from the City of Pasadena for campus-wide water conservation and the installation of a new solar panel system on the roof of the Fran Norris Scoble Performing Arts Center.

Westridge’s partnership with the parent community continued to grow and deepen. The Parent Association’s launch of the Multicultural Parent Collaborative and the Dads’ Club introduced new ways in which the parent community can develop a stronger connection to one another, their daughters’ Westridge experience, and the school. Regional events in London, Oakland, San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, and Santa Barbara brought alumnae of all ages together, illustrating that the ties that bind Westridge women extend far beyond the boundaries of Madeline Drive. Much like the parent partnership, these events — and myriad local events — help alumnae maintain a strong connection with the school, reinforce their relationships with one another, and establish a network of diverse women with a shared foundation. Exemplifying the promise of a Westridge education, our alumnae continue to be their best, bold selves and reach new heights. One example is Carrie Ryan ’08, who in spring 2012, was one of 32 American students and the first Westridge graduate to be selected as a Rhodes Scholar. This past fall, she began her program at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom pursuing a Master’s in Philosophy in Evidence Based Social Intervention. The work accomplished to date on a new strategic plan has informed the Board of Trustees and the administrative leadership team of Westridge’s strengths and opportunities. The success of a 100-year-old institution such as ours lies in our ability to stay relevant, be forward thinking, and examine areas where growth is crucial and change is necessary. The exercises where this planning process has involved the community have proved to be invaluable and will inform Westridge’s trajectory as it begins its next century of educating young women.

Preparation for the school’s Centennial celebration in 2013-2014 is well underway. Under the leadership of Westridge retired head of school Fran Norris Scoble; Centennial Coordinator Ava Megna, who is a past parent and former trustee; and an exceedingly thoughtful steering committee, event planning and volunteer recruitment is ongoing. The diligent committee work — from researching the school history to planning the celebration weekend — is a persuasive indicator that the Centennial year will be one to remember. Members of the Westridge community have made it clear that being our best, bold selves is not a theme that can be associated with just one school year — it is a lifestyle by which we all strive to live. Thank you for putting forward your best, bold selves as supporters and philanthropists who place the school’s well-being as a priority in your lives.

With gratitude,

Elizabeth J. McGregor Head of School

it all starts... with great teachers.

I love the jubilant feeling of walking into our classroom...and the kindest teachers who make you feel like you can do anything and be anyone! — ashley ’19

Westridge has the most wonderful teachers who will listen to and be available for the students. They guide us and encourage us. It’s amazing that Westridge has so many adults who we can trust and go to especially as teenagers. They are truly wonderful! — misao ’14

I really appreciate the way the teachers really care; they want us to do well. They’ll take on extra work for themselves and stay after class or after school to make sure we master the concept. They’re passionate about what they’re teaching, and that makes us passionate too. — erika ’13

There is a remarkable support system at Westridge. All of the faculty members express a dedication to helping students discover their own passions and go out of their way to grant them the tools necessary to fulfill their ambitions. — cassie ’12

In Memory of Timothy Wright | 1953 — 2011 Tim Wright, Middle and Upper School drama teacher and director, passed away in December 2011. During Tim’s 19-year tenure at Westridge, he was instrumental in building the drama department and transitioning the program from its home in Braun Center for the Performing Arts (now Braun Music Center) to the Fran Norris Scoble Performing Arts Center. Westridge students loved Tim’s storytelling. From musicals and black box productions, to directing and acting classes, his guidance and inspiration on stage and in the classroom will not be forgotten. Community members have memorialized Tim’s Westridge legacy in a new endowment fund, the Timothy Wright Memorial Fund. See page 60 for more details.

it all starts... with compelling curriculum.

The excitement I feel for science is because of my teacher and the cool projects she comes up with. We don’t just listen to a boring lecture. We learn about science in so many different ways. I can see myself as a scientist in the future because of her! — ella ’18

I couldn’t live without my art class. It’s our chance to really talk to each other (while we do our art). We’re taught to “love” our art. If we are stuck or not happy with how it’s going, our teacher tells us to give our creation more love. She’s always happy and always looking on the bright side. She’s amazing! — hannah ’19

I love being in the costume shop with Ms. Hawk where I can learn and explore all of the different drama productions through fashion.” — kaitlin ’15

During my senior year, I embarked on an Independent Study in Filmography. With the school’s support, I was able to take control of my own education and explore different fields of cinematography that weren’t typically offered in high school classrooms. — cassie ’12

it all starts... with strong community.

68

I couldn’t live without all the kindness of the people at Westridge, especially my friends. Being at Westridge makes me happy and when I am happy I learn more. — summer ’19

I like that there are no boys to distract us and that class size is small enough that we all get time and attention of our teacher. — hannah ’19

Westridge’s sense of community makes it a very appealing place to want to attend school. Even though the academics are challenging there is never a sense of isolation because your friends and teachers are always there to lend a guiding hand. Community is also present especially during town meeting where we sit in a circle and listen to our peers play music and have open discussion to express our ideas and opinions. — erin ’14

Westridge has really given me a home – a place that defines me, where I can be confident and comfortable being myself, and a place where people know my name and I know theirs. Because of Westridge, I’ll never forget where I went to high school and I’ll never want to; Westridge is very special to me. — elinor ’12

an educational partnership | Skills Enrichment Program Founded in 1990, the Skills Enrichment Program (SEP) is a partnership between the Pasadena Unified School District and four local independent schools (Polytechnic, Mayfield, Chandler, and Westridge). Each summer, SEP provides an intensive five-week enrichment program to approximately 400 public-school students who are chosen by their school principals based on their academic promise and financial need. Once students are nominated in their fourth grade year, they remain in the program for eight consecutive summers. This long-term commitment between SEP and its students is essential to the program’s success. During their time in SEP, students build their skills in math, science, and language arts.Virtually all graduates of SEP go on to attend college, most at four-year universities. Westridge School hosts an all-girl experience for students in grades five and six. During their two summers at Westridge, students take a variety of academic classes to boost their math and verbal skills, with an eye on preparing for success in middle school. Classes are small (averaging 20 students) and teachers are joined in the classroom by high school and college-age interns, half of whom are themselves graduates of SEP. In addition to the academic enrichment courses, SEP students at Westridge have the opportunity to take classes in art, music, multimedia creation, and technology. Field trips provide adventures in the community, and our annual Etiquette Tea gives the girls a chance to dress up and attend a special event with a featured speaker. Daily physical education classes and Friday swim days balance the summer days with exercise. For more information, contact Danae Howe, Site Director at 626.799.1053, ext. 239 or dhowe@westridge.org. In order to provide this program at no cost to the students, funds are raised from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Contributions are made by the four member schools. With the generous support of those listed below, this valuable and successful program continues to benefit hundreds of students each year. ways of making a gift All gifts are vital to the support of Westridge School’s annual and ongoing needs. The school hopes that your primary motive to give to Westridge remains your belief in the school and its mission to provide the highest quality education to young women. Federal tax laws make giving beneficial to you. CASH Current cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent allowed by law, and may be made with cash, checks, or credit card. Pledge payments may be arranged. APPRECIATED SECURITIES If you own stocks or other capital assets that have appreciated in value, a gift of those securities to Westridge can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full value of the gift and avoid paying the tax on the gain you would have if you were to sell the asset. MEMORIAL OR HONORARY GIFTS Gifts may be given in honor or memory of a friend or a family member or in recognition of a significant event. UNITED WAY Westridge may be designated as the recipient of your United Way contribution. Simply list the school’s name and address on your United Way pledge form. Processing charges may be imposed by United Way. DONATE YOUR CAR Westridge accepts donation proceeds from many organizations that will purchase your vehicle. Donors may wish to sell their cars to these organizations with the proceeds of the sale going to Westridge.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES* Through the California Community Foundation Westridge is able to offer charitable gift annuities — a very attractive planned gift. In exchange for a gift of cash or stock you will be paid a guaranteed lifetime income. You also receive an immediate charitable tax deduction and a portion of each income payment is considered to be a tax-free return of principal. individual retirement accounts Name Westridge as a beneficiary of your retirement plan and leave less-taxed assets to family. OTHER PLANNED GIFTS* Westridge also accepts planned or deferred gifts through bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance, or pension plans. A donor may wish to consider these gift vehicles as a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. Planned or deferred gifts are recognized through The Madeline Society (page 71).

*A tax consultant is your best advisor in designing a giving plan for the benefit of Westridge. However, to explore the various ways to make contributions, contact the Advancement Office at 626.799.1053, ext. 261.
