the fundamental purpose of Westridge school is to develop in girls their intellectual and creative powers and their unique qualities as individuals. Essential to the school’s purpose is the commitment to be a community that reects and values diversity, respects individual differences, and responds to a changing, dynamic world. an intellectually engaging and challenging curriculum prepares students to continue their education in college and beyond as discerning, motivated learners who are committed to excellence and goodness in everything they do. the program offers balance among humanities, mathematics and sciences, ďŹ ne and performing arts, technology and athletics. Westridge strives to develop young women whose joy in learning, personal ideals, commitment to ethical action, social and environmental responsibility, courage and compassion will lead them to meaningful lives as contributing citizens of the larger world.

In professional sports, a rookie’s first year is often referred to as a campaign. Not much is expected during that campaign since a rookie is, of course, a rookie. But occasionally, a rookie will have a year to rival that of the best veteran. On July 1, 2009, Elizabeth J. McGregor became the11th head of Westridge School, and what a rookie campaign she has had. At the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, Westridge opened its new state-of-the-art Upper School science building, on time and on budget. This feat was accomplished as a result of the preparation and execution of a strong team of dedicated faculty, staff, and community members under Liz’s leadership in 2009-2010. The pending relocation of the Upper School science program from the Seeley G. Mudd Science Building initiated plans for that facility to be completely renovated as an exclusive center for our Middle School program. To help make all this a reality, Liz continued Westridge’s fund raising effort for this $11 million project and the results have been astounding during this period of economic uncertainty – in her rookie year, over $2.4 million was raised. Equally as important, the 2009-2010 Westridge Annual Fund raised $770,747, exceeding the goal of $750,000 due to the continued generosity of the Westridge community. Understanding the

importance of the Annual Fund, Westridge parents achieved 90 percent participation, Westridge faculty and staff reached 93 percent participation, and strong ongoing support from alumnae was illustrated by 100 percent giving from the Classes of 1945, 1947, and 1953. The Class of 1988 earned recognition for the largest total dollar amount gift to the Annual Fund, raising $14,850. These donations are used to fund program enhancements that Westridge would otherwise be unable to provide our students. Other high notes of Liz’s first year included the hiring of Associate Director of College Counseling Lynn O’Grady, Director of Advancement Rick Wilson, and Interim Director of Upper School Margaret Shoemaker; faculty and staff engagement in our accreditation process; completion of comprehensive parent and young alumnae surveys; and enrollment of 93 new students. The 2009-2010 year concluded with another beautiful Westridge commencement ceremony, including an address by Scripps College President Lori Bettison-Varga. In her second year as head of school, Liz is well on her way to becoming a Westridge veteran. With the 100th anniversary of Westridge in sight, all indications are that there will be much to look forward to as the school enters its 2nd century. Surgere!

chair’s message 3

The 2009-2010 school year marked the official beginning of my Westridge journey as head of this wonderful school. From my very first days on campus coinciding with the start of construction on the LEEDcertified science facility in July 2009, the theme of “building” took on both literal and figurative significance for me. In communities strong and sure, status quo can lead to complacency. Not at Westridge. As a vibrant community that embraces change, challenges convention, and insists on growth and improvement, 2009-2010 was another milestone year for the school and its supporters. Building on the Day-to-Day As a fundamental necessity of the day-to-day operations of the school, Annual Fund support illustrated the hard work, generosity, and commitment of the community. Over 200 parents, alumnae, alumnae parents, and trustees volunteered to encourage their peers to contribute toward this vital fund. Through this team effort, our 2009-2010 goal of $750,000 was exceeded, reaching $770,747. Built by Popular Demand Construction on the LEED-certified Upper School Science Building began once the board-mandated 75 percent of the total fundraising goal was reached. Throughout the school year, an additional $2.4 million was raised. The building – a teaching tool in itself – fully supports the expansive Upper School science and math curriculum that Westridge girls so eagerly sought and continue to pursue. Inevitably, as Westridge changes girls, so do girls change Westridge. 4

Building on Existing Strengths For a community to look inward and identify areas of reinvigoration requires confidence, honesty, and candor. The community launched its self-study as part of the re-accreditation process through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). In an intensely collaborative process, we began to examine areas where the school can grow and improve, as well as to identify elements of strength that can be developed and fostered. An integrated, well-rounded look at how others experience Westridge added valuable insights, with almost 75 percent parent participation in a 2010 survey and the completion of a young alumnae survey. In the 2010-2011 school year, faculty, staff, and administrators have given generously of their time, talent, and knowledge as they assess our school and complete the written portion of the study. These cumulative efforts will provide strategic direction as we approach our Centennial. In conjunction with the construction of a brand new campus facility, planning for the remodeling of the Seeley G. Mudd Science Building began. Repurposing Mudd into a central space for the Middle School community aimed to reinforce an already cohesive program, and to provide the 7th and 8th grade students with a more defined sense of place on campus. Building Relationships and Community My favorite part of the 2009-2010 school year was learning the school culture and building relationships with colleagues, students, parents, alumnae, trustees, and friends of Westridge. So many extraordinary people comprise Westridge School, as demonstrated by the myriad programs and achievements of which we are justly proud: • Seventy-four members of the Class of 2010 earned 330 acceptances to 139 different colleges and universities in 29 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. The Class of 2010 included two National Merit Scholarship finalists.

• Westridge maintained a 95 percent enrollment retention rate, a testament to the strength of our community and the value of the education we provide for young women. • The school strengthened its partnership with parents by creating more interaction through the Parent Association. A special science night, for example, included parent participation in hands-on demonstrations and experiments. This opportunity gave parents a feel for their daughters’ experiences in the classroom and allowed them to interact with Westridge science faculty in an academic setting. • Alumnae gathered at many Westridge events, both regionally and locally, to maintain their strong ties to the school. Events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, New York City, Boston, and Greenwich reconnected alumnae with Westridge and one another. They also returned to campus to work with students and share of their talents. Professional cellist Valerie Marshall ’69 and Seattle Symphony violist Susan Gulkis Assadi ’84 participated in a concert with the Upper School Orchestra in the Fran Norris Scoble Performing Arts Center. World-renowned multi-media artist Pae White ’81 was the visiting Artist-in-Residence, sponsored by the Cynthia Clark Maxwell ’71 Endowment, presenting a community lecture about her experience and work. • Westridge hosted the bi-annual People of Flavor Conference. In support of its commitment to diversity and multiculturalism, the school invited students, parents, faculty, and staff from local independent schools to participate in this inclusive event. • The Westridge Swimming & Diving team placed second in the Prep League, winning six of 11 events with two students named league co-

MVPs; swimmers competed in the CIF-SS Finals and Masters Meet; one student diver placed third in the Prep League Diving Championship and advanced to CIF-SS Finals. Overall, 23 Westridge athletes were named to the Prep League All-League Team. Westridge athletes in basketball, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field competed in CIF-SS post-season playoffs. • Despite another year of rain, parent and student volunteers organized and staffed a highly successful 19th annual Summer Opportunities Fair. An important community resource, the fair also raised funds to support Westridge student initiatives and supported students from the Pasadena Unified School District through the Skills Enrichment Program. Gratitude underlies all the physical, emotional, and intellectual “building” that has occurred in my first year at Westridge. I am honored to be a part of such a thoughtful, inclusive, and giving community. Ultimately, all that was accomplished in the 2009-2010 school year was made possible through the support and generosity of others, such as those listed in this report. On behalf of Westridge, I thank you for every dollar, every minute, and every idea and suggestion you have committed to this school and these girls. I look forward to your support in years to come and reach out to others to encourage them to do the same. Sincerely,

Elizabeth J. McGregor Head of School

“Thank you, Westridge” When I arrived at Westridge nine years ago as a new fourth grader, the promise of tomorrow floated in front of me like an eager butterfly. Little did I know at that time how much of a wonderful promise was in store for me at Westridge. As I’ve come to understand over the past nine years, Westridge’s promise to its students runs much deeper than the excellent education they receive. Westridge nurtures and develops its girls into independent, intelligent, and inspired young women. I know I am wiser, kinder, more understanding and more curious than I was before I considered Westridge a second home. Because of that, I feel so incredibly lucky to call myself a Westridge girl, and soon to call myself a Westridge graduate. Today the promise of what the future holds for us as we begin new and separate journeys hangs excitedly just beyond our grasp. But tomorrow our future will be in our hands with our diplomas. And with our futures and our diplomas we will go out into the world as bold young women who have the brains, the courage, and the compassion to change the world. I know we can change the world because Westridge believes in us, our family and friends believe in us, and because we as a class have grown to believe in ourselves. Don’t let the promise of tomorrow fall flat. As Westridge women and soon to be graduates, we can do anything. I want to thank you, Westridge, for all the challenges, hard work, laughter, and beauty you have given me and this fantastic Class of 2010. Truly, thank you. — Josie Ahrens ’10 Vespers, June 10, 2010

Katie Rothenberg Wei ’94

Westridge Teacher | Upper School English

I’ve redefined the term “lifer.” I attended for all nine years and now, having taught for eleven years,

I’ve been a teacher here longer than I was a student.

In my 9th grade classes, we use a writing model (Introduce, Present, Explain) and one day a student told me, “I use this now when I’m telling a story to my parents. I used to just start in the middle of something I wanted to tell them, but now when I talk to them I set context first and then they know what I’m talking about.”

I thought: Okay, I’ve done my job.

Judith 11th grade

I arrived in 4th Grade – so I guess you can say I’m a “lifer.” I feel like every piece of who I am is because of what’s happened to me while at Westridge. When I was in 3rd grade at my old school I was kind of shy, reserved, and not very outgoing. Over the years I became more and more outgoing and I’ve gone out for student body positions;

I think the whole atmosphere encouraged me. I saw so many girls who were really active and passionate about what they do.

in and out of the classroom

leaders 56

Laura Hatchman

Westridge Teacher | Upper School Science I love lively discussion in the science classroom. Some of the most complex societal issues of our time are filled with conflict. There is a lot of gray area to be considered. Cloning, for example: might there be some times that it is okay to clone and other times when it is not okay? We talk about what health care means in today’s world. We discuss AIDS and other controversial subjects.

Often, the girls run these discussions; they’re amazing leaders and really work well together.

Veronica 11th grade

When I was younger I wanted to be a pediatrician, a dolphin trainer, or a marine biologist. But coming to Westridge, you get to take a lot of classes, and Environmental Science was really interesting to me. Even if I don’t become an environmental scientist,

now I turn the water off while I’m brushing my teeth

,

in addition to various things to help the environment.

worldly leader 72

Sandy de Grijs Westridge Teacher | Upper School History For many years I’ve taught a research project on human rights and genocide. It is an in-depth project and culminates with student presentations. It is fantastic to be present as these girls become experts in their areas of study and learn from one another. The subject matter is compelling and every year,

I watch as students become teachers. When we debrief the presentations, something exceptional happens: a situation happening anywhere in the world has entered the classroom, and the discussion leads to our personal responsibilities. What do we need to do to become committed global citizens? And it can be wonderful for me to see who suddenly shines in those discussions —

it may be a quieter student who finds her voice and surprises herself!

Juanita Jimenez Westridge Teacher | Upper School Ceramics Many parents are interested in expanding their girls’ life experience, so I find that many students are becoming world travelers at a young age. This exposure to many cultures is a natural enhancement to making art — the girls begin to see how all of life’s aspects come together in different parts of the world.

This encourages us to incorporate life experience into making and discussing art.

an educational partnership | Skills Enrichment Program Celebrating its 20th anniversary year, the Skills Enrichment Program (SEP) is a summer program that partners Chandler School, Mayfield Junior School, Polytechnic School, and Westridge School with the Pasadena Unified School District. SEP provides an intensive five-week summer school experience for Pasadena Unified students who have demonstrated strong academic potential and a commitment to learning. SEP began at Polytechnic School in the summer of 1990 with 55 Pasadena Unified students and now serves 400 students annually across the four campuses. The program’s goal is to offer qualified students from grades 5 through 12 with an enriching summer experience that will enhance their academic careers. SEP works to retain students all eight years of the program in order to provide them with a fully balanced college preparatory experience. The program is offered at no cost to participants. Operating funds are raised jointly by the SEP executive director and development directors at each of the participating independent schools. With the generous support of those listed below, this valuable and successful program continues to benefit hundreds of students each year. The Ahmanson Foundation Anonymous John W. APPRECIATED SECURITIES If you own stocks or other capital assets that have appreciated in value, a gift of those securities to Westridge can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full value of the gift and avoid paying the tax on the gain you would have if you were to sell the asset. MEMORIAL OR HONORARY GIFTS Gifts may be given in honor or memory of a friend or a family member or in recognition of a significant event. UNITED WAY Westridge may be designated as the recipient of your United Way contribution. Simply list the school’s name and address on your United Way pledge form. Processing charges may be imposed by United Way. DONATE YOUR CAR Westridge accepts donation proceeds from many organizations that will purchase your vehicle. A donor may wish to sell their car to these organizations with the proceeds of the sale going to Westridge.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES* Through the California Community Foundation Westridge is able to offer charitable gift annuities — a very attractive planned gift. In exchange for a gift of cash or stock you will be paid a guaranteed lifetime income. You also receive an immediate charitable tax deduction and a portion of each income payment is considered to be a tax-free return of principal. INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS* Donors over 70 years of age may wish to give up to $100,000 without a tax penalty when given from an individual retirement account. This legislation expires in 2011. OTHER PLANNED GIFTS* Westridge also accepts planned or deferred gifts through bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance, or pension plans. A donor may wish to consider these gift vehicles as a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. Planned or deferred gifts are recognized through The Madeline Society (page 71).

*A tax consultant is your best advisor in designing a giving plan for the benefit of Westridge. However, to explore the various ways to make contributions, contact the Advancement Office at 626.799.1053, ext. 252.
