Before leaving on their special delivery, County Transportation Director Chris Walton poses with several of Santa’s helpers.

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County Transit (BCT) brought joy to hundreds of needy children living at the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center and Covenant House by delivering toys, clothes, and personal necessities. These organizations provide transitional housing and other services for homeless families and at-risk youth. BCT and Brightline/All Aboard Florida

partnered for BCT’s 2nd Annual Holiday Toy Drive and delivered the donations in a loaded holiday decorated bus. “Every child deserves to enjoy the holidays, and Broward County Transit is honored to bring joy to underprivileged children in our community and spread goodwill this holiday season,” said Broward County Transportation Director Chris Walton.

Water Smart Broward: Protecting Our Children Around

Water

Provided by Water Smart Broward! Drowning is the leading cause of injury death to children from one to four years old. The majority of children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool. Most children who drown in a home pool enter the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. Children need capable,

close and constant supervision, especially toddlers who easily and quickly leave a safe, supervised area unnoticed. SIMPLE STEPS SAVE LIVES The loss of a child is devastating to parents, siblings, grandparents, relatives and to a community. Drowning is almost always preventable with simple steps. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. (Cont’d on page 3)

As we begin the New Year with some befuddled, some confused and some wanting to give up, I wonder, where are we headed? Disaster is the kismet for such a way as for those who have no faith. A way filled with disrespect and no regard for life will surely be the gateway to misery in living such a faithless existence. We’ve divided our communities with conflictridden measures. By pitting families against government and citizens against police, our country is embarked and embattled in destruction with the world, seemingly into World War III. Who will win? As if stranded on some God forsaken island, I search the horizon, looking and hoping for a rescue vessel only to be entertained by the ghost ship, “The Flying Dutchman.” Where is our hope and where is our recovery? I’m reaching for hope, but it’s like trying to hold on to hot steam escaping from electrical turbines used to cool nuclear waste. It cooks the skin from your hands, leaving only charred bones, unable to maintain a grip. Yet my unconquerable (Cont’d on page 8)

Is Christmas still about family, Faith and community? On paper and in textbooks, Christmas is a religious holiday celebrated differently all around the world by billions of people. In London, swimmers meet Christmas morning at Hyde Park for the Christmas Day Serpentine Swim also known as the Peter Pan Cup

Race. While in Berlin, Germans take part in a traditional Christmas ice swimming session. In Chile, many Catholics attend a special church service for 9 days before Christmas which is known as Novena, and in India, Christian worshippers attend a midnight mass church service.

Across the globe, we can see Christians attempting to remain spiritually connected during Christmas by honoring the birth of Christ in their lives with either a church service or a community cleansing. However, conversely, many Americans crowd the malls and

grocery stores over-spending on food and gifts. In fact, most Americans may agree that Christmas has become so commercialized that the pressure to accumulate unnecessary debt is almost unavoidable. This year, I internally declared enough is enough and decided to use my influence to create better traditions and embrace the true meaning of the Christmas season: family, faith and community. Thankfully, my adult brother (20) and my mother agreed, and we collectively opted out of material gifts, decorated houses, ornamented trees, and over the top 12-dish dinners. Instead, we planned a Christmas experience that we will all remember for years to come. Our pre-Christmas turn up consisted of a Vision Board Party for family and peers where we gathered at my long-time friend Chanel Diana Walker’s vintage boutique, Lace Style Agency Emporium, located in east Fort Lauderdale. About 10 dreamers including myself broke bread with a very tasty charcueterie platter provided by Kitchen Killa Culinary Solutions and indulged in one of my favorite specialty holiday cocktails. Ranging in age from 12 to over 50, we sat Indian style on oversized pillows, clipping and gluing pictures from magazines while visualizing the next season of our lives. I opened the event with my personal testimony recalling how when God saved my home from foreclosure, my car from repossession, and transformed me from a secretary to a CEO, I relied solely on my faith to “see those things that are not as though they were.” It was a powerful moment as guests recalled times where they too had to “walk by faith and not by sight.” Between Jay Z lyrics, you could hear laughter, more testimonies and explanations of why vision would be so vital in the coming seasons. “Community Church” was definitely in session. Afterwards, my mother, my brother and I headed further east to check into a beachfront hotel suite. We arrived to a spiked egg nog greeting, and instantly knew we had made a great choice. We set our alarms for 6:30 a.m. and ended up on the beach with three flute glasses and a bottle of champagne Christmas morning. While sipping bubbly, we sat in awe of the Lord’s handy work: the ocean, the skyline, and eventually, the sunrise. Powerful rays of light broke free of the surrounding clouds and distributed energy up and down the Atlantic coast as other people who gathered with loved ones sat in gratitude, giving thanks and having faith that our next seasons will be even more blessed than the last… In this season, it is my sincerest prayer that we individually embrace our power to break free from traditions of old and create new hope for ourselves and communities for seasons to come. A Proud Paper For A Proud People

Truth In Satire: Omarosa's last 20 minutes (Cont'd from FP) The Apprentice, who inexplicably landed a position in the his administration and was the only high-ranking AfricanAmerican woman on the president’s staff, is telling a different story. According to Manigault Newman, she was not fired by Chief of Staff John Kelly and was not forcibly removed from the White House grounds. But a leaked Secret Service account of her last 20 minutes in Donald Trump’s employment confirms that the inordinately obnoxious Omarosa was escorted away in a hail of flying fingernails, hair pulling, stiletto heel side kicks, obscenity outbursts, and high-octane physical hostility that had the White House roof snipers on maximum alert. Here is that minute-byminute transcript of Manigault Newman’s actionpacked, made-for-TV departure: Secret Service Classified Report Tuesday, December 12th Removal from the White House grounds of Omarosa Manigault Newman 4:10pm: Chief of Staff John Kelly calls Omarosa to the Situation Room under the guise that it’s her “one year review.” She believes she is receiving a promotion to Second Consort, perhaps even First Lady, and applies heavy red lipstick. 4:12pm: When Manigault Newman steps into the Situation Room, the 2-ft. thick, double reinforced steel doors slam shut behind her. A pair of beefy, fully-armed security guards stand at either side of the door. A top White House lawyer is sitting at the table with former General Kelly. Omarosa becomes suspicious and the adamantium claws under her fingernails reflexively extend. The guards rest their hands on their holstered pistols as Manigault Newman steps confidently toward the table, slamming the indestructible metal blades on the surface, gauging deep cuts into the heavy oak wood. Kelly and the lawyer recoil. Omarosa: What…exactly…the f**k…do you think…you’re up to gentleman? And it better be good because I need to get back to alienating lesser minorities before The Donald finds out that I’m gone. Gen. Kelly: Omarosa, please sit down so we can talk like respectful colleagues and reasonable adults. The adamantium blades slice through the air, nearly cutting open Mr. Kelly’s throat just below his Adam’s Apple. Omarosa: F**k sitting down, General. Let’s be clear. There is no one who works harder for Donald J. Trump in the White House than Omarosa Manigault Newman. I was with him before any of you brown-nosing bootlickers had memorized his golf handicap and I’ll be with him long after you spineless toadies slink down Pennsylvania Avenue with your tails between your legs clutching at your pink slips. Gen. Kelly: The president has asked me, Omarosa … Omarosa: ASKED YOU WHAT, you cringing lickspittle!? Gen. Kelly: …to tell you that you’ve done a fine job this past year, but your services are no longer needed here at… Omarosa: I CAN’T HEAR YOU, MOTHERF**KER! Did you say my services are the only things keeping this sorry administration from falling on its face? Because that ain’t fake news, a**hole, THAT’S THE F**KING TRUTH! White House Lawyer: Ms. Manigault Newman, the president has the power to terminate any employee at any time and Mr. Trump feels that your time is … Omarosa spins to face the attorney, then crawls slowly onto the table like a black panther ready to pounce, slicing his tie off with a slashing motion of her right hand. Omarosa: Shut your mouth you pathetic, a**-kissing, lying piece of legal fakery. With a quick nod of his head, General Kelly signals the guards to intervene. As they step forward, Omarosa wheels around, leaps from the table and drives an adamantium claw into the eye sockets of each guard. Both drop to the floor

with a sickening thud as they grab for their faces and writhe in pain. Omarosa turns again to confront the Chief of Staff. Omarosa: Open this door, General, or prepare to be clawing at your own face next, because I’m losing patience. And tell that con man of an ambulance chaser next to you to stop staring at me. Gen. Kelly leaves his chair tentatively, walks to the steel doors, punches in the access code, and watches as the heavy obstacle creaks open and Manigault Newman slips through. At the same time, he covertly trips a silent alarm at the side of the door. 4:15p.m: Omarosa bounds through the basement passageways with newfound determination, intent on reaching the Oval Office where President Trump is in a meeting. As she reaches the access stairs to the main floor, she is met by Kellyanne Conway, one of the president’s closest advisers and a consummate liar herself, who, incredibly, also has adamantium claws which are now fully extended. Conway and Manigault Newman begin to circle each other on the main floor landing, each hissing with a frightening and deadly resolve. Omarosa: You f**king bit*h, I’ve hated you ever since election night when you took my spot on the victory couch next to The Donald. That was my victory seat, my win, and you stole the moment from me, you opportunistic backstabbing shrew. Conway: I’ve had your number since 2015, you useless, Spanx-corseted, bogus-boobed, political imposter. You manipulated your way into The Donald’s good graces with your feigned flattery and ingratiating grin and now you’re going out exactly the way you should—in disgrace. 4:17p.m: A high-pitched, stereo war whoop is heard coming from down the hall, and within seconds Ivanka Trump and the First Lady Melania rush in. Impossibly, The Donald’s daughter and wife also have adamantium claws, shiny and sharp, extending from their fists. Omarosa: Oh, how sweet, the strumpet trio all coming together in one white sisterhood of feeble reprisal. Prepare to meet your doom, you ambitchous snohoes! Fast, deadly, and accurate, Omarosa takes Conway down with a blow to her midsection that severs the blonde bullsh**ter in half. She never had time to scream. A tornado-like spin move catches Ivanka off-guard and as she staggers backward Omarosa removes both of the presidential paramour’s breasts with a blindingly quick slashing motion of her lethal claws, leaving the first daughter bleeding out on the grand staircase. Melania is cagier, more experienced, clearly having been in many a cat fight of her own before this one. She slams a stiletto heel kick into Omarosa’s chest leaving the black mamba with a piercing wound below her collarbone. But Omarosa drives her own stiletto heel into the femoral artery of Melania’s right thigh triggering a torrent of Slovenian blood onto the mid19th Century, Oriental rugs. Melania drops, quivers momentarily, then does not move again. Manigault Newman surveys the carnage, flashes that soulless smile that has sent chills through tens of millions of reality TV fans, then begins an executioner’s march toward the Oval Office. 4:22p.m: As she approaches the president’s lair, a loud commotion is heard behind the double doors, furniture obviously being stacked behind the mahogany barrier. Omarosa: Donald, you come out of there you yellow-belly, sissified, sorry excuse for a world leader. Come to Mama! A deep, forceful male voice is heard from the other side of the door, identifying itself as that of a Secret Service agent and warning Ms. Manigault Newman to keep back. Omarosa: Oh, f**k that, Donald. I know it’s you disguising your stupid voice, like you do on the phone, pretending you are your own publicist or some crap like that. You can’t

fool me, you fat piece of chickensh*t orange turd sausage. Now come out of there and tell me WHAT THE F**K YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING FIRING OMAROSA! Let’s go, move, before I chop that door into toothpicks and drag you out by your hay hair toupee. 4:24 p.m:Omarosa rubs her adamantium claws together filling the halls of the White House with the cold, metallic sound of razor-edged terror. President Trump: Omarosa, listen to reason. If I am going to keep my racist base happy, I can’t have a Black woman standing by my side, acting all chummy with the President of the USA. You understand… Omarosa: The f**k I do, Donald. I’ve stood by your side while you were nothing but a no-good, lying, cheating, thirdrate huckster on a schlocky, dime-store reality TV show. You’re still a no-good, lying, cheating, third-rate huckster but now you’ve got real power. You think for ONE F**KING MINUTE that you can get rid of me so easily after all I did for you? You owe me, you orange, Cheeto-filled, combover con artist mother**ker. I’m not going anywhere. Another voice speaks from behind the Oval Office door— timid, feminine, nervous, but still a man’s voice. Unidentified Male: Ms. Manigault Newman, we can make this painless for you, very lucrative, if you just quietly walk away and don’t make any more trouble. Omarosa: The f**k you say, Jared? I’d know your effeminate voice anywhere, you pathetic Jewbie co**s**ker. I just filleted your wife, sonny boy. And you’re next, you halfwitted weakling. Omarosa then steps purposefully to the door, tilts her head listening closely, then spears Kushner fatally in the heart with one lightening fast strike through the heavy wooden door. President Trump shrieks and begins to scream for help from Secret Service agents stationed in the West Wing. At this point, a dozen agents are scouring the White House hallways in response to Gen. Kelly’s panicked alert from the Situation Room, hunting for Omarosa.

4:26p.m: They find the wildeyed, frothing she-devil standing outside the Oval Office door wiping blood off the blades of her death-dealing claws. She wheels, positions the dangerous metal talons above her head, and runs straight for the largest cluster of agents, decapitating three before being hit with a dart from a tranquilizer gun and then is subdued by four linebacker-sized security officers, two holding German Shepherds that are straining and snapping against collar chains. 4:28: Omarosa is quickly placed in a straitjacket and dragged into a bear cage brought to the White House specifically for this purpose, the firing of Manigault Newman. Agents call out in reassuring tones to President Trump, who is now hiding under the Resolute Desk clutching framed

DECEMBER 28 2017 - JANUARY 3, 2018 • PAGE 3 photos of himself. They urge him to open the Oval Office door and come out. He refuses, saying he’ll only emerge after Omarosa is driven far outside the city limits. 4:30: The bear cage with Omarosa inside, still groggy from sedation, is quickly and quietly loaded into the back of a D.C. Police armored riot van and driven to an FBI compound outside of Richmond, VA, almost 90 miles from the White House. There, after being given strict instructions not to venture within 20 miles of the White House, approach President Trump, or feed on any of the corpses she left behind, Omarosa Manigault Newman is freed by order of the president who is scared sh*tless of the woman he made famous, and is hoping her release might

keep her from disemboweling him or cutting off his n*ts at some later date. Twenty-four hours after her release, acting calm and cool, coy and confident, Omarosa appeared with ABC’s Michael Strahan on Good Morning America to tell her side of the story, which was dramatically different than the Secret Service account you just read. AUTHOR’S NOTE: If you doubt the veracity of the transcript above, ask yourself this— has anyone seen Kellyanne Conway, Ivanka Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, or Jared Kushner alive since last Tuesday? Enough said. Follow Allan Ishac I read. I write. I ride. I rest. http:// allanishac.com

children die who are under water for as little as 6 minutes. Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Kid Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is an ocean, lake, water park, pool or bathtub. It is also important to install multiple layers of protection to prevent childhood drownings. Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Doors Environments · Door handles should be

5 feet above ground level · Always keep locked · Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water Environments · Do not deactivate alarms · If the alarm can be temporarily tor an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/or Backyard Lake from The Home and From All Access Doors and Entrances · Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use · Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and selflatching

Water Smart Broward (Cont'd from FP) Here Are Some Ideas To Start With: “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall, and climb out or yell for help.” Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing to experience the sensation. Remember water safety It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most

The Great Rape of 2017 By Nicole Nutting

The majority of us have never suffered the personal assault known as rape. We hear about rapes often enough and, in decent people, it generates a feeling of sympathy. Without first-hand experience, though, it’s impossible to know true empathy.

The recent rash of sexual harassment accusations is not coincidental. Americans are currently living in a rape mentality culture, and it starts at the very top. This country is being governed by a bunch of shameless rapists, and apparently nothing is sacred or outside their reach. In their lust for fossil fuels, they’ve shown their willingness to rape the environment by seizure of national park lands and insistence on the Dakota XL pipeline. Gun nuts are salivating in anticipation of raping our wildlife, playing the mighty hunters by shooting wild animals from helicopters. Government officials have raped the public coffers to pay for luxury transport on personal vacations. The list goes on and on, but the most egregious rape of all came last week when the Republicans in Congress passed their tax scam. 1% of Americans, already the wealthiest

group, just raped the finances of the other 99%. Welcome to “Reaganomics—The Sequel”. Never mind that the concept of “trickle down” economics didn’t work the first time—if at first you don’t succeed, just keep abusing the poor. This is the fabulous Christmas present Trump promised everyone. Big business, the richest Americans, and the deep pocket donors to the GOP all just got a massive holiday gift. The rest of us get to subsidize it at income tax time, and many of us will ultimately lose our healthcare. THIS is what rape feels like. We were held down, against our will, while a cold-hearted force had its way with us. Morally bankrupt politicians flexed their muscles and people of conscience got screwed. Rape is an act of power, and our struggle was not enough to prevent the outcome. We did receive one gift from this, though. The next time we hear about a rape victim, we now have the experience to feel true empathy.

Drunk drivers are victims of greed On December 22, 2017, the Augusta Chronicle’s editorial staff published an article which lamented the case of Tara McConnell, the drunk driver convicted of causing a June 5, 2017, vehicle collision which injured

six children. Naturally, all the blame was heaped upon McConnell who was sentenced to 30 years in prison. In a pious tone, the article bemoaned how on June 5, 2017, McConnell “Piled six neighborhood kids into her Honda Accord and headed for a gas station for slushes – with a blood alcohol content, authorities say, that was five times the legal limit.” Then, McConnell “Turned into the path of another vehicle traveling the other way – injuring all the kids in a cataclysmic collision.” The article continued, “This was no accident. It was the natural, predictable, abominable result of the thoughtless, wanton, hedonistic act of a fully aged adult selfmedicating to the point of delirium and heedlessly placing those beautiful young creatures directly in the path of a moving vehicle.” The article concluded,” What is it with people today? Whither went responsibility?” First, pose the questions to the people who rule America. Then ask yourself, what would possess a nation to constitutionally protect the manufacture, distribution, and sale of a recreational, consumable product that has been a factor in the deaths and injuries of more Americans than all the wars combined? Expectedly, after each alcohol related incident, hypocrites preach personal responsibility as the body count keep ticking upwards. Unfortunately for Tara McConnell and the injured children,

this is just another case of alcohol doing what it was designed to do. After the first drink alcohol impairs the brain and central nervous system impairing judgement. From there it’s all downhill. Alcohol is a depressant, meaning it slows down vital functions; resulting in slurred speech, unsteady movement, disturbed perceptions, and the inability to react quickly. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines alcohol as a drink such as whiskey, vodka, wine, or beer containing ethanol. Ethanol is not harmless. It is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid that is the intoxicating agent in fermented and distilled liquors. It is commonly called alcohol or spirits. Its purpose is not to make one spiritual, but to intoxicate. Intoxication is a state in which a person’s normal capacity to act or reason is inhibited by the effects of alcohol. The alcohol profiteers know this, but the love of money trumps human life. Hence, Tara McConnell and the injured children were the victims of greed who never had a chance. Indeed, by deceptive advertising and propaganda, millions of Americans have been seduced into worshipping the distilled evil spirit instead of the Holy Spirit.

While it was a year of tumult, pain, violence, racism, failings by the White House and so much more, the year is ending on more than a shard of hope. Most importantly, the Senatorial voting in Alabama demonstrated what the power of the Black vote could be if we would just vote and not consider ourselves Democrats or Republicans but the “swing vote.” That vote determined so much more than we thought we could or many believed we could. America knows there is a power in the Black vote nationally that had not been fully made evident, not even in the years of the Obama Presidentcy. In particular is the explosive power and weight of the votes of Black women. They have not just in Alabama, seized the political initiative in both voting and running for office. But all over the country. And they are smart enough to know better than tying themselves to one party or one selected candidate. 2018 will usher in a new power group for this corrupted power group system that has taken the Black vote for granted for so long or ignored the Black vote completely. This was a year in which the President of the United States made clear his racism and racial indoctrination by declaring American Nazis and white supremacists were “nice people” even if they used an automobile to kill someone who disagreed with their

Something to think about Hello, I know this is a very sensitive issue, but I must say something. I respect everyone who came out about their sexual abuse. However, as a man who’s sitting in jail for false allegations of sexual abuse, I feel that we should not be so fast to point the finger and judge because next week it could be you that the finger being pointed at. And the crazy thing is there is “no” evidence needed, only your name and it’s over for you. The so-called victim in my case comes to see me, she writes me, and she tells me how sorry she is for allowing her grandmother to use her to lie on me. All am saying is we need to look into allegations more that have “no” evidence behind them. A lot of people may not care because it’s not their dad, brother, son or love one… Yet!! As for the people out there who are sexually violating or violating of any kind, you need to seek help. Yes that also goes for you to, Mr. President. J.D. Osborn, Sr., God Knows All….!! 2017

imbecilic thinking. More racism was apparent as he was discharging his duties to alleviate the devastation of a hurricane to American people. He found a reason to treat people who are persons of color much more poorly than people who looked like himself. Everything about this President’s policies is birthed out of his divisive thinking and his determination to take America as far into a police state reality as he possibly can. Think that’s hyperbole? He has demonstrated he is determined to destroy the free press, to silence any opinion that does not agree with his, to undermine the power and confidence of the American people in the foundational institutions of this country. Condemning these institutions as too politicized to be impartial out of one side of his mouth but designating Fox News as a state run media in everything but name. No government entity, not the State Department, the Court system, the Justice Department (in particular the FBI), the public Educatio, has escaped his venom. And while a lot of folk have been focused on his vulgar and vile texts, he has stocked the lower federal courts with individuals whose main qualification to become jurists is to be in their legal thinking far to the right of Germany’s Sondergericht courts during World War II. Those courts were used to remove internal opposition to the Nazis. Just think about it. Yet again the Alabama election comes to mind. There appears to be a growing number of people in this coun-

try, Independents, Republicans and Democrats who are now determined to change the course of this country and the impact of this President’s policies on its citizens. They have decided that being right is more important than being partisan, that the character of a candidate is more crucial that the label of a political party and even more that all politics is local and local power can nullify or check federal power. I think too that 2018 will be the year of women. They have shown what unity can do to some of the most influential power systems in this country. They have declared an independence, not based on gender but formulated from decency. This movement of American women may well change the world. It has definitely altered America. I’m optimistic for the coming year and secure in my thinking. Why? Because the Bible tells me so.

In Defense of Black The Gantt Women andReport Girls

Black Women and Girls Deserve More Respect, Visibility in the #MeToo Movement. Ed Gray, a senior columnist with the North Dallas Gazette, says that we must elevate Black women from social media hashtags to highly-valued and respected members of the global community. (Creative Commons/Pixabay.com) By Ed Gray (North Dallas Gazette/NNPA Member) This has been a monumental year for the reaffirmation of women’s rights in the workplace and the ballot booth. This is long overdue. The battle for the rights of women, and specifically Black women and girls, has gone on for centuries. In America, the spotlight on this fight for women’s rights shines brightly on White women, while Black women, who have often fought more vigorously for equality and justice, are largely consigned to the shadows of the movement. TIME magazine placed “The Silence Breakers” on their cover, noting that the tenacity and courage of the women’s voices could be heard over the walls of systemic oppression. Still, in the stories of Dajerria Becton, a teenager who was violently handcuffed and thrown to the ground by an overzealous McKinney, Texas police officer and Sandra Bland, who was arrested and died in police custody in Prairie View, Texas, that oppression seems unsurmountable. Most acts of extrajudicial violence and aggression towards Black women never become national headlines and many Black women suffer in quiet silence as their complaints of sexual harassment are ignored and discounted, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Mainstream America labels Black women as angry Jezebels unfit for normal, social interactions. Black American pop culture hypersexualizes our young girls while condemning them for being too fast. There is a deafening silence in the Black community that is complicit in the degradation of our Black women. When we do speak, instead of a healing, sometimes our words just cause more wounds. One of the most influential hip-hop artists of all time, Tupac Shakur, spoke directly to Black women in “Wonda Why They Call U Bytch”: You leave your kids with your mama ‘cuz your headin’ for the club In a skin-tight miniskirt lookin’ for some love Got them legs wide open while you’re sittin’ at the bar Talkin’ to some n**ga ‘bout his car I guess he said he had a Lexus, what’s next? You headin’ to his car for some sex Today, some people would criticize Shakur for slut-shaming, while others would applaud him for telling it like it is. White women have been applauded for coming forward to tell their stories of sexual assault and harassment under the #MeToo flag. The movement would be much stronger and more credible, if its leaders forced mainstream media to also carry the stories of Black women on their morning shows and popular websites. Black men must bear some of the blame for mainstream media’s ignorance and apathy towards the plight of Black women. We band together, as brothers, ignoring the anguished cries of our sisters. We must stop, look and listen. We must reject R. Kelly for his alleged abuse of Black women and girls with the same unanimity that Black voters in Alabama rejected the alleged sexual predator Roy Moore. We must step in the name of love and in the name of justice with respect for our Black mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. This respect must begin in the Black community; we must clean our own house, first. We must (Read full story on www.thewestsidegazette.com)

human spirit that comes from a lineage of overcoming suffering and my determination which is fueled by oceans of ancestral blood won’t allow me to stop reaching for hope. A spiraling of disgust towards our country from without and within appears to have created a drunkenness in our leadership that has led to a state of ‘delusions of grandeur’. Where am I? Poor people have no health insurance and rich people keep getting. There used to be welcoming signs that begged people, all kinds of people, to move to Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia and people are really doing just that; now they’re wondering if they have stepped back into the Twilight Zone? Sicknesses of all kinds are finding shelter in the homes of the rich and famous; nobody is left undisturbed in the wake of new diseases. People in New Orleans, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and many other places still can’t go home because there are no homes to go home to. Just outside of my office is a homeless camp. I don’t have the heart to call the authorities and have them vacated or relocated. They (the homeless) say that they have no place to go. Drive-by shootings, homeless people being killed, babies being dragged by hit-and-run-drivers and bodies being found all over the place have become the norm. This can’t be America. Every morning I awaken from what appears to be a reoccurring dream but with constant reminders from news media. I wonder if it is a dream at all. It’s got to get better. Nothing ever just happens. There is a cause and effect. Where do we fit into this equation? Are we just the cause or an ill effect of the cause? Throughout our struggles, there have always been “the needs” to keep us. It’s as if we’re the soil that life itself is planted, grown and nurtured in. We know that unless you break the soil and plant the seed, if a struggle does not exist, then nothing can come forth. When the storms and reality of dreams become too unpleasant, I can understand better the confrontations and emotions expressed in the words of our Negro National Anthem, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing”, written by James Weldon Johnson and his brother, John Rosamond. The particular stanza suitable for this piece : “God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, Our God, where we met Thee; Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our GOD, True to our native land.” I struggle with dreams. Reality is what fuels my dreams and the reality of it all is: “you have to have a dream in order to live.” “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” As we move on into the New Year, my dream for the New Year is for all of us to dream; to dream dreams of hope and to act upon those dreams to make them come true. Dear God, in the name of Jesus, because of your Spirit we live and because of your Spirit we dream. God grant us peace and hope that pushes us to act upon Your Love for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Q & A: What Does Reverend Deal Say!

'G. R pel ls F avor' R.. A. C. E. S Spel pells Favor'

Roy Mizell & Kurtz Funeral Home

Question: What is grace? Answer: Grace is a part of God given to us when we do not deserve it. In other words grace is the unmerited favor bestowed on us. Grace is the confidence we have to live a successful Christian life. Grace is the power to assure our success in all that we do. The word “grace” is Greek meaning charis or charismatic, beauty, beautiful conduct. Then a magnificent thing happens. Under God’s guidance the Bible writers borrowed this word and clothed it with a new significance so that in the New Testament it means the forgiveness of sins is granted out of the Goodness of God. So often, there are some misconceptions about grace that causes us not to benefit from its power. Many Christians fall into this misunderstanding and confusion that (a) grace permits us to continue to sin. We’re quick to say that ‘Jesus died for our sins’. Yes, Jesus died for our sins, but that’s not a welcome mat to sin continuously and knowingly. Why is it a struggle for all to live a sin-free life? Because we must partake with Jesus' suffering before we enjoy His glory. Grace is that extra power we have to strive to live a holy life. (B) Many think that through grace God has lowered his standards. David said that He is the same God yesterday, today and forever. With grace and the Holy Spirit we can live and fulfill the standards of God’s law. Jesus did not come to destroy the Law but to fulfill the law. But it is contingent upon us to provide an effort to live to please God. There are 66 Books in the Bible that will give you examples on having the hope to live a Godly life. May you pray and meditate that the understanding of Grace will change your spiritual life. Reverend David Deal is the senior pastor at Every Christian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Rev Deal can be reached at the Westside Gazette 545 NW Seventh Terrace, Fort Lauderdale, Fla 33311, or by email at David.deal55@gmail.com.

(Cont'd from FP) Black History Month edition, this Crusader reporter discovered that little was being done to honor Lawrence, while NASA held two memorials to mark the 50th anniversary of three white astronauts who perished in a fire aboard the Apollo 1 space module. The Crusader story lauding Lawrence’s achievements was published in dozens of Black newspapers after the National Newspapers Publishers Association (NNPA) carried it on its newswire. NASA maintained that Lawrence wasn’t an astronaut because he had not flown 50 miles into space. Twenty years later, that explanation led Black leaders to mount a campaign that forced NASA to recognize Lawrence and added his name to its revered Space Mirror Memorial in 1987. Thirty years later, NASA went back to its original explanation, justifying its reasons for not marking the 50th anniversary of Lawrence’s death. This past January, they relented, and on Dec. 8, held a grand ceremony fitting of an unsung hero.

The ceremony honoring Lawrence on Dec. 11 came before President Donald Trump signed a directive requesting NASA to end a 45-year hiatus in sending astronauts back to the moon. But on earth is the legacy of a man who never got there, but taught many to dream big anyway. The ceremony recognizing Lawrence was a spirited, but at times, somber one for 300 guests that included decorated NASA astronauts, dignitaries, relatives, and friends, who had flown and driven miles across the country to honor Lawrence at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL. Lawrence’s older sister, Dr. Barbara Lawrence, attended and spoke to the many who came from Chicago, including Lawrence’s sister-in-law, Lorne Cress Love, who lives in Washington, D.C. Another prominent Chicago resident who was present was E. Dawn Griffin, the oldest daughter of Ernest Griffin, founder of Griffin Funeral Home in Bronzeville. The Griffin Funeral Home, which closed in 2012, handled the funeral arrangements for Lawrence.

Also in attendance were members from Lawrence’s college fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, who turned out to honor one of their own. On the sprawling grounds of the NASA facility, they participated in a two-anda-half-hour ceremony that began at the Center for Space Education and culminated with an emotional wreath-laying ceremony at the base of the national Space Mirror Memorial, a massive black granite structure where Lawrence’s name is among those of 20 astronauts who either died in flight or in training. Bobby R. Henry, publisher of Fort Lauderdale’s Westside Gazette—a member of the NNPA— covered the ceremony as well as a reporter from the Chicago Crusader. The ceremony brought out some of NASA’s astronauts and biggest officials. Charles Bolden, America’s first Black NASA chief administrator, and Stephanie Wilson, the second Black female astronaut, attended the service. Another Black astronaut, Winston Scott, played the trumpet in a band that performed various jazz songs, including, “Fly Me to the Moon.” Reportedly, jazz was one of

Lawrence’s favorite musical genres. Dr. Herman B. White Jr., a physicist and lecturer at Bradley University in Peoria, IL, Lawrence’s alma mater, gave a presentation after giving a similar one in October at the university where a memorial scholarship and a conference room bear Lawrence’s name. Recently, Ohio State University in Columbus, OH renamed a dormitory in Lawrence’s honor. Bolden, who piloted the space shuttles Columbia and Discovery, praised Lawrence for his spirit. “He took that first step,” Bolden said. “If he had lived, he would have been flying on that space shuttle also.” Another speaker, Col. Robert Cabana, who flew on four shuttle missions, agreed. “Major Robert H. Lawrence truly was a hero. He set the stage for what was to come,” he said. Dr. Barbara Lawrence shared her experiences with her brother as they grew up on the South Side of Chicago. She said when Lawrence was young he was a very disciplined student and dedicated to learning. “I’m truly proud to have been his sister,” she shared. “He wasn’t interested in being the first Black astronaut. He was only interested in being given the opportunity to do what he wanted to do. I’m sorry he wasn’t here a little longer, but I think his job was one that was well done.” Born in 1935 to the late Gwendolyn Duncan and Robert H. Lawrence, Sr., Lawrence was a man ahead of his time. Long before magnet and STEM programs were part of the high school curriculum, Lawrence excelled in math and science. At 16, he graduated with honors from Englewood High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Bradley University. He married the late Barbara Cress from the prominent Chicago Cress family and entered the Air Force at age 21 before earning a doctorate in physical chemistry from Ohio State University, becoming the first astronaut at NASA to earn a doctorate degree. As a United States Air Force pilot, Lawrence accumulated

DECEMBER 28, 2017 - JANUARY 3, 2018 • PAGE 9 over 2,500 flight hours. In June 1967, Lawrence graduated from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School (Class ‘66B) at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. In that same month, he was selected by the USAF as an astronaut in the Air Force’s Manned Orbital Laboratory (MOL) program, thus becoming the first Black astronaut. (At the time, USAF and NASA were two separate branches of the government, but the Air Force was used and viewed as the training ground for future astronauts). In Chicago, Lawrence’s name is on the Bronzeville Walk of Fame on South King Drive, but there were no ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of his death and few know about his life and his significance in Black history. Robert H. Lawrence Elementary School on the South Side closed in 2013 after dwindling enrollment and low academic achievement. Lawrence’s ambition to fly into space came at a time when there were few Blacks in NASA’s space programs. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy in 1961 had selected Ed Dwight to become NASA’s first Black astronaut, but NASA officials claimed Dwight’s academic performance wasn’t good enough and on the same level as other candidates. Dwight quit the Air Force in 1966 after some Civil Rights leaders accused NASA of discrimination. The next year, Lawrence’s success renewed hope that America would finally have a Black astronaut. On Dec. 8, 1967, Lawrence was training another pilot in an F-104 Starfighter jet. From the backseat, he was teaching the pilot the steep-descent glide technique, but the pilot made the approach too late. The jet struck the ground hard. The main gear failed and the jet caught fire, and rolled. The pilot trainee survived with major injuries after his seat was ejected. Lawrence was killed instantly. His funeral was held in Chicago before his remains were cremated. Two years later, NASA cancelled the MOL program, but many participants in the pro-

gram became astronauts who flew on the space shuttle. In addition to Bolden, several NASA officials at the 50th anniversary ceremony said had he lived, Lawrence would have flown into space on one of NASA’s space shuttles, too. Sixteen years after his death, Guion “Guy” Bluford became the first Black astronaut to fly in space. In all, 13 Blacks have traveled into orbit. “Because he was willing to risk his life to go out and make a difference for others, people are learning and having that opportunity today,” said Antonio Knox, national president of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. After his death, NASA did not recognize Lawrence as an astronaut, saying he didn’t fly at least 50 miles in space. However, Cong. Bobby Rush (D1st) mounted a campaign that forced NASA to put Lawrence’s name on the Space Mirror Memorial in 1997—30 years after Lawrence’s death. At the beginning of this year, NASA officials told the Crusader that there were no plans to mark the 50th anniversary of Lawrence’s death, but two services were held to mark the 50th anniversary of three white astronauts who perished aboard the Apollo I that year. In a special Black History Month pullout on Lawrence, the Crusader published a story in February about the situation. Three weeks before the exact date of the 50th anniversary of his death, the Chicago Crusader was informed that NASA would honor Lawrence after all. “Bob was a terrific pilot to work with,” said retired Lt. James Abrahamson, who shared his experiences of Lawrence when the two were in the third group of the MOL, a program that studied the dynamics of space flight and information gathering. “He had a unique ability to be calm in every circumstance. It was a characteristic people loved, admired, and, in the end emulated.” Tony Hill of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity said when it comes to having Black astronauts, Robert H. Lawrence “was the first, but he certainly was not the last.”
