Getting Out the Vote: Takes a Village of Individuals and an Army of Organizations By Linda Thigpen For midterm success in 2018, it will take a village of individuals and an army of organizations. The Color of Change Political Action Committee (PAC) spotlighted this week conducted a get out the vote “weekend of action” pushing support for Amendment 4 while canvassing for gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum and incumbent Senator, Bill Nelson. Voters were encouraged to vote “yes” on Amendment 4, which restores voting rights for non-violent offenders provided it obtains 60% approval from voters in November. The Color of Change organization is a welcomed ally for candidates, as Florida has not seen a democratic governor in decades. Notwithstanding, the state falling short by a 1% vote margin the last two attempts for the governor’s house. Organization members, led by Director Arisha Hatch, came from various areas of the country determined to work their plan: “Engaging with Black people and allies (Cont’d on page 3)

Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters went on the defensive when pundits and media friendly to President Donald Trump accused one of her staff members of secretly releasing the personal information of three Republican senators. Waters and Trump have long feuded with the president calling her names and Waters simply calling for his impeachment. However, as the contentious confirmation hearings of Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, roared on, allegations continued. While the testimony of
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford took place in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room, South Carolina’s Sen. Lindsey Graham and his GOP counterparts, Sen. Orrin Hatch and Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, saw information that included their phone numbers and addresses leaked onto Wikipedia. Gateway Pundit and RedState, both Trumpfriendly sites, reported that the IP address responsible for the leak was associated with Waters’ office and a staff member was responsible. Waters went on the offensive: “Lies, lies, and more despicable lies. I am utterly disgusted by the spread (Cont’d on page 4)

Sun Sentinel endorses Mayor Andrew Gillum For Governor To understand why voters should choose Democrat Andrew Gillum over Republican Ron DeSantis for governor, compare the candidates’ positions on issues important to Florida. Education: Gillum wants the state to spend more on traditional public schools, especially on teacher salaries. That would help Florida. DeSantis wants to continue favoring charter schools, which educate just 10 percent of public-school students. Because of Tallahassee’s decade-long trend of shorting traditional public schools, 19 counties this fall are asking voters to approve local tax increases to give teachers raises and make schools safer. Africa Umoja: The Spirit of Togetherness, a Journey Through South African Music
B y Nichole Richards Music makes us human. Songs expressing moments of joy and sadness, pain and celebration, death and birth have
existed as long as Man. A melody is a soul’s hum, dance a body’s natural sway, and drums echo the rhythm of the heart. Music is instinctive. Music is defining. Music makes us hu-
man. This single phrase captures the very essence of Africa Umoja: The Spirit of Togetherness perfectly. The captivating performance tells the social and
vide their students an atmosphere that is conducive for learning. To the childhood friend who opened the doors to their home without hesitation to raise someone else’s child. We feel an obligation to identify and praise these remarkable people. These are our Heroes and here are their stories.
“Growing up in an environment where selling drugs, getting into fights and making irrational decisions was the norm, I became a product of that environment. However, one day I realized that it was deeper than that. I was a product of a dysfunctional family where my parents abandoned me and left me with my grandmother to be raised. For years I was upset with my parents and that anger manifested itself to be a childhood delinquent. However, after a near death experience— crashing into a home going 90 miles per hour— I decided to turn my life around and influence youth and young adults who come from a similar background as me through motivational speaking, writing books and music.”
Jono The Giant Since the inception of modern media, certain narratives have consistently been promoted and only a handful of individuals receive positive recognition publicly. Our mission is to correct this imbalance and give the little guy and gal an opportunity to express themselves. We are determined to give those who deserve a platform an opportunity to control their narrative and share their story. Our Heroes of Broward initiative will exclusively focus on acknowledging the unsung heroes of our community. From the schoolteachers that spend extra hours and extra money out of their own pockets to pro-
political story of South Africa, from Zulu kraal to the bustling melting pot of Johannes-burg. Birthed from the imagination of creators Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni, both former members of the critically acclaimed cultural dance troupe Ipi Ntombi, Africa Umoja initially served to assist the youth of South Africa in remembering their heritage and providing an alternative for the under-privileged. However, since its opening in Johannesburg in 2000, it has become an international hit. Per-formed for royalty, political dignitaries, and the public in over 50 countries, Africa Umoja con-tinues its world tour with a stop in South Florida at the Miramar Cultural Arts Center, Sept. 28-30 & Oct 5-7. The electrifying performance has received rave reviews for its exploration of South
African history and culture through award winning chore-ography, thrilling music, and beautifully designed costumes. Told through the memories of an elderly man, the perfor-mance examines the effects of colonization and modernization on the continent and how African music adapted in response. In Africa Umoja we see the evolution of South African music, from power-ful tribal dances, like the sensual Venda Snake Dance and the undeniably spiritual San-goma, to Miriam Makeba’s rhy-thmic “Pata Pata” of the 1960s, to today’s globally popular Afropop music and dances, such as the famed gwara gwara dance most re-cently featured on the politically charged music video “This Is America” by American rapper and singer Childish Gambino. Africa Umoja
also deals with the racist and violent practices of Apartheid and police brutality. The musical performance demonstrates the South African people’s struggle for freedom and dignity and their impending victory. It is a perfect celebration of what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th year on earth. Performed by some of South Africa’s most talented and spirited singers, dancers, and drummers, Africa Umoja is a theatrical performance you do not want to miss. It calls with the sacred drum, entrances with soothing harmony, and excites with dance. It is not simply a performance on South African history, but a performance on the essence of the spirit and what makes us human. Note: Africa Umoja: The Spirit of Togetherness contains instances of artistic nudity.

Puerto Rican Leaders Endorse Gillum for Governor President Barack Obama endorsed Mayor Andrew Gillum to be the next governor of Florida. ORLANDO, FL – Monday, Oct. 1, President Barack Obama endorsed Mayor Andrew Gillum to be the next governor of Florida. President Barack Obama recognized Mayor Andrew Gillum’s civic leadership and vision for Florida— providing Floridians with access to quality and affordable healthcare, ensuring our kids receive a strong education, and protecting Flori-
da’s environment. “Andrew is a proven fighter with the courage and determination to stand up for Florida families. As Governor, Andrew will expand access to affordable healthcare, protect Floridians with pre-existing conditions, invest in education, protect the environment and build an economy that works for all. Andrew believes that healthcare is a right, not a privilege,
and he will make expanding Medicaid a priority on day one as governor,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. “As Mayor of Tallahassee, Andrew developed a thriving innovation economy, grew workforce training programs, and built safe communities where our children can thrive — a strong record for which I named Tallahassee a TechHire city. PALATKA, FL – On Sunday (Sept. 30) in a county Donald Trump won by 36%, Mayor Andrew Gillum’s grassroots event packed an auditorium in Palatka, Florida. Palatka has a population of just over 10,000 people and today, hundreds came out to hear the Mayor speak on his vision for Florida, where all Floridians have access to affordable healthcare and our kids have access to a quality education. “This enthusiasm and energy for Mayor Gillum and his message of fighting for all Floridians is historic,” said communications director Johanna Cervone. “Today’s event in Palatka is another example of this campaign’s momentum and a reminder that Floridians are ready to elect a leader who will put Florida first. We’ll continue to bring this message to every corner of the state for the next 38 days because the only poll that matters is on Election Day.”
Getting Out the Vote: Takes a Village of Individuals and Attorney Offices across the an Army of Organizations country and persons running (Cont'd from FP) to win elections.” Their staff on hand, engaging residents of Miami and Broward counties, were young, personable and mission focused — as evidence by the execution of their volunteer training sessions last weekend at the Betty T. Ferguson complex in Miami Gardens. The PAC is the nation’s largest online civil rights organization providing get out the vote training and canvas activities. The organization, founded in 2005, was the brainchild of James Rucker and former Obama administration Green Jobs Czar, Vann Jones — with its political committee formulated in 2016. It was started to support and elect leaders to office with the idea that those leaders would serve to protect the expressed interests of its constituency. Conversely, when leaders do not operate in the best interest of its constituency, those same members of the community—would vote them out of office. Consequently, the accountability of elected officials is its organization’s core principle. Operating under such a principle, Color of Change sought to devise a system with a structure that brought com-
munity stakeholders together over brunch, engaging them in relationship building around a table and providing them voter contact training then sending them out to canvas neighborhoods. At the completion of canvassing, squad members return, debrief and celebrate with a block party. At the inception of the organization, the first area of focus was to begin looking at the State
to fill it. Recognizing, too often, those holding the office did not resemble the individuals they sentenced. Thus, the group’s mission was to help elect black state attorneys around the nation. One such success story is that of current Orange-Osceola State Attorney, Aramis Ayala. Aramis Ayala is the first African American woman to pull such an upset in Central Florida. The organization also hosts “Serve Our Sisters,” a Miami Gardens community service group who prepares care packages for women returning from incarceration. Sisters from the group were eager to collaborate and knock on doors with approximately 115 other squad members attending the event. Canvass opportunities are available every day at 4609 NW 199th Street. For those who choose not to canvass, there is phone banking and voter texting opportunities. Jennifer Edwards, Communications Director, reports that to date, over 200,000 text messages have already gone out in support of Amendment 4 and messaging supporting candidates’ Gillum and Nelson. ORLANDO, FL — On Monday Oct. 1, 2018, Mayor Andrew Gillum proudly received the endorsement and support of over 15 leaders from the Puerto Rican community from cities and towns across central and south Florida. The endorsements include: “It’s an incredible honor to have the endorsement and support of Puerto Rican community leaders across the state who are working every single day for the people of Puerto Rico - on the island and here in Florida. As Mayor, I’ve stood up for our Puerto Rican brother and sisters and as governor, I will work to build a Florida that works for everyone — and I will ensure Puerto Ricans are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve,” Mayor
Gillum said. “The best tool we have this year to send a message that nuestros Boricuas

There is truly a message in the music Howar d University gives way to Inaugural Sports Howard By Bobby R. Henry, Sr. It’s not very often that you can pick up a book, find it easy to read and comforting because it speaks to something that pertains to your history. This book, Black American History, From Plantations To Rap Culture, is of such. It was an easy read and very familiar. The sound of music resonated not only in my head but in my spirit as I perused the pages. Reading through the pages I was able to go back, and to my understanding of our history ascertain how the songs played a tremendous part of our history through the association and the context made it resonate more as well as remembering the rhythm of the music. This book, filled with history, offered comfort and gave me guidance and a piece of mine. The amount of history covered in this book in such a short space proved both binding and tremendously welcoming. bout his objects and his quantitative research proved worthy. I would openly and duly suggest to anyone that wants to understand a part of our history through song and music to read it in the pages of this book. Again, it is well worth the time spent reading, obtaining acquaintance and being reminded of how our songs and music play a role in our history and in transforming it. From enslavement to rebellion, to outright defiance our music is an umbilical cord to our struggle for identity and freedom. Thank you

The only all Boys School in Broward County is set to have A Mock Trial in the New Broward County Courtroom On October 10, 2018 By Alton Bolden Downtown Fort Lauderdale, (October 10, 2018) Piney Grove Boys Academy will be sending the entire school along with some volunteers to re-enact a court case detailing a crime that was committed in Texas. The students will act as the lawyers for both sides, students will get a chance to be the jury, and there will be a real judge presiding over this case. The students range in grade from 6th through 12th grade and they are members of the school’s debate team. These students are being trained by Judges and Lawyers from the Public Defender’s office. Gordon Weeks has partnered with Piney Grove to help bring this experience to life for these students by sending over the case to study along with experienced lawyers to help. Students enrolled in Piney Grove Boys Academy are students from the Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Tamarac and Sunrise Communities. Piney Grove is an inner-city school offering a Private Prep Education for a minimal fee. Most of these students are from a singlefamily home with hopes and dreams of making it big one day. The school does its best to expose the students to different careers and opportunities such as this mock trial experience. Based on Principal Alton Bolden’s observations he stated, “A lot of my students have friends and family members that have been on the wrong side of the law or have seen an abundance of injustice but with this program we are giving them a voice and an opportunity to change the narrative on their life story.” “We want ev-
ery student to know that they don’t have to sell drugs, rap, or be an athlete to be successful, all they have to do is study and be disciplined enough to stay focused and good things will follow.” This opportunity comes with a cost. Each student must sacrifice 2 days a week after school to study, read the case files, and meet with his team and coach to prepare for trial. The students learn how to work cooperatively, how to sort through lies, and how to argue a point with facts without becoming physical towards one another. In addition, the students learn how to support one another and how to speak in front of large crowds. Teaching kids how to debate and have adult conversations is important for moving ahead in life and a career. These skills that are being learned now will develop their character and give them the courage to speak up even when no one else will. More programs like this need to be implemented into schools. The Principal has reached out to other schools with debate teams and has discussed having mock trial competitions. Inspiring the next Thurgood
Marshall or Johnny Cochran just by asking a student to be apart of the team. The mock trial is one of the 13 pillars that his students go through every year in order to complete the Rites of Passage. The Rites of Passage is something Piney Grove has done over the past 4 years which helps students get the mental nurturing they need to become successful men. There are several programs for girls to get advice and guidance but not enough geared towards boys. The Rites of Passage at Piney Grove includes: African American History, Economics, Politics, Family Responsibility, Career Development, Spirituality, Community Involvement, Physical Development, Home Care, Auto Care, Women Rights, and Sex Education. For more information, or interested in volunteering or assisting in any of these programs please contact the school office (954) 735-1470, visit the w e b s i t e s : www.pineygroveacademy.org , Facebook www.facebook.com/ pgba.pineygroveboys, or visit the school’s campus: 4699 West Oakland Park Blvd, Lauderdale Lakes, FL, 33313.

on Sept. 21, Holt dared scholars to re-imagine their views on journalism and “tap the breaks” on stories that might otherwise be considered a little “too good to be true.” “I think we are all programmed to believe stories that confirm our beliefs,” Holt said. “We can’t be afraid to tap the brakes

Growing up in a country village in Jamaica, I saw my Grandma Ida cook enough food every day so that if someone should drop by, there’d be plenty for them to eat. We weren’t rich though we had enough, and my Uncle Baugh who lived with us was very disgruntled with Mama’s generosity. I don’t know how much he contributed to the food budget, but Mama was the chief breadwinner, and this was her way of life. As the Anniversary of Irma passes, its effects still a reality for many in Broward FORT LAUDERDALE – As the anniversary of Hurricane Irma passed recently, its aftermath is still very present for several thousand Broward residents. Lasting damage to homes and finances continues to be an issue for over 400 families being assisted by the Long-Term Recovery Coalition

Red Tide likely spreads in Florida, causing breathing problems concern because they affect not for beachgoers only the health of people and WEST PALM BEACH, FL — Preliminary tests show red tide may be the cause of breathing problems some beach goers on Florida’s Atlantic coast have experienced. Palm Beach County officials said Monday state water tests found the algae that causes red tide. The statement said more testing needs to be done to determine its concentration before a final determination can be made. At least six beaches in Palm Beach County have been closed to swimming as a precaution, though officials are planning to reopen them Wednesday. Florida’s Gulf Coast has been hit hard by red tide this summer, causing a massive die off of both fish and other sea life. It also causes breathing problems in some humans.
There have been 57 Gulf Coast outbreaks since 1953. Officials say red tide is uncommon on the state’s Atlantic Coast, with only eight outbreaks since 1953. Red tide is a term that describes a harmful algal bloom (HAB), which occurs “when colonies of algae-simple plants that live in the sea and freshwater-grow out of control while
producing toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and birds” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Ocean Service. “HABs have been reported in every U.S. coastal state, and their occurrence may be on the rise,” the National Ocean Service says. “HABs are a national

His new book From Fields to Courts was written to inspire and inform its readers that regardless of the challenging circumstances and adversity in your life, whatever you can conceive and believe, you can achieve. The book is about how a poor Black country boy in the segregated south was inspired by his grandparents and many others to become the first member of his family to graduate

From Fields to Courts is a remarkable and galvanizing true story about a person overcoming adversity, learning the value of education, and refusing to accept failure over success. Pierce is also a proud alumnus of the class of 1980 at Bethune-Cookman University, whose commitment to service was spurred by his involvement in activities while a student that led to his becoming an attorney and later being appointed as a judge. Among his accomplishments, Pierce was appointed to serve as a Pinellas County Judge in 2006 by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. He or-
less Court sessions in an effort to prevent minor criminal cases from standing in the way of defendants’ efforts to emerge from homelessness in 2010. Targeting male juvenile delinquents, he established the Sixth Judicial Circuit’s first Build Optimal Youth Success (B.O.Y.S.) Court in 2016 focused on character development, mentoring, community service, tutoring, and academic enrichment. Pierce has also been recognized on numerous occasions, including the FreshStart Innovative Mentorship Beacon of Light Award, John U. Bird Award from Clearwater Bar Association and many others. Pierce will returned to Bethune-Cookman University at “I Love B-CU Day” on Sept. 7, 2018, where he shared with students and promoted his memoir, From Fields to Courts Courts. Pierce will donate 25 percent of earnings from the book to the student body for scholarships. I Love B-CU Day is a university-wide event that will be filled with school spirit, music, fun and an appreciation for our beloved University. How to buy the book: For a personal autographed copy of From Fields to Courts, send a check or money order in amount of $25.00 to J. V. Pierce, P.O. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County unveils new brand positioning aimed at volunteer recruitment
New brand look emphasizes the potential inheren inherentt in all children By Cindy Schutt Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County along with
more than 270 Big Brother Big Sisters affiliates across the country, today unveiled a new, modern look and brand repositioning with a goal of recruiting more diverse volunteers. “The need in Broward County for young people to have a role model is more urgent than ever,” said Ana M. Cedeño, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. “To attract more volunteers of all generations, we needed a modernization of our brand to make an impact in the community and meet the need of the essential work of
matching youth with mentors.” Months of research – focus groups with potential Bigs, with current Bigs, Littles, donors, staff, and leadership – showed that the brand was not effectively connecting with younger, prospective mentors or conveying the urgent mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The organization is intentionally pivoting from messages of the importance of mentoring, to messages of the urgent need for the adults in the community to step up to defend the potential of every child. marine ecosystems, but also the ‘health’ of local and regional economies.” After something in the air caused beachgoers in Jupiter to become sick this weekend, beaches from Martin County to Lake Worth were shut down so area agencies could investigate CBS affiliate WPEC-TV reported. Dr. Acey Albert told WPECTV that red tide can cause a variety of symptoms including skin irritation and trouble breathing. “Throat irritation is a pretty classic one. People talk about the red tide tickle, sort of a scratchiness or soreness in the throat as a well as a cough,” Albert said. Albert says the symptoms are related to the toxins that the algae gives off and if you start to feel sick you should leave the beach immediately and find someplace cool. “Symptoms do tend to get better in air-conditioned situations. That includes the car. If you’re on the beach and you develop any symptoms getting in the car and turning that recirculation button on and just getting in the air can help quite a bit,” Albert said. The Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission is also testing the water in Deerfield Beach for red tide, CBS Miami reported.
abled. “Carol now will have food stamps and Medicaid. We both would have been homeless and hungry. The food and encouragement were so needed at a time when we could only pray, not daring to hope. Like angels, God sent you and our prayers were answered. Thank you for helping and thank God for sending you to us.” The Brown family from Plantation, consisting of a single mom with a disabled child, had also suffered extensive storm damage to their apartment. LTRC partner United Way helped them find temporary housing and the Disaster Case Manager from Memorial Healthcare helped to place the child in a special needs daycare through Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care Services (PPEC), among other supports from other agencies. Organizations and businesses interested in supporting the work of the LTRC should contact Bill Condon at bill@ccbroward.org. Broward County Residents affected by Hurricane Irma and needing assistance should call 211 to register and have a Disaster Case Manager assigned to them. VITAS: Helping patients & families focus on living Breast cance cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death among African American women, surpassed only by lung cancer. An estimated 27,060 new cases and 6,080 deaths from breast cancer are expected to occur in African American women, this year alone. Invest in your future. Breast self exams (BSE): It is recommended that women, starting
in their 20s, complete monthly breast self exams, preferably after their period. Women should have their BSE technique reviewed by a health care professional. Mammograms: Starting at age 50, women should have screening
mammograms every 1 to 2 years. Your doctor may recommend a mammogram before age 40. Clinical breast exam (CBE): As part of a thorough exam, the doctor
will examine the breasts and under the arms for any abnormalities. Ask your doctor if you need a CBE. VITAS® Healthcare reminds women of their value to their families and the community. We honor the survivors and the memories of the women who have died from breast cancer.

Is the Gillum VS DeSantis Contest ReallyARace War? By Roger Caldwell The Gillum Campaign is really a political mistake, if you ask any political expert. Gillum did not win because he ran a great primary race, but four Democratic candidates spilt the White vote. Once there are too many candidates in a race, the Democrat leadership cannot help decide the outcome. Anyone who studies politics are aware that the Democrats and the Republicans decide very early, which candidate will win the position they are running for. Gillum is a wonderful mistake, but it is a political Democratic mistake in 2018, and the party must support their candidate 150%. Florida has a history of the KKK determining in many small rural
towns, who will win the election, and it does not matter if they are Democrat or Republican. Many forget it was no accident in the Ocoee massacre on November 2, 1920 that a White mob attacked African American residents in northern Ocoee, when the Blacks attempted to vote. “As many as 50 or 60 African Americans may have been killed during the massacre, and most African Americans owned buildings and residences in northern Ocoee were burned to the ground. Other African Americans living in southern Ocoee were later driven out on threat of more violence. This massacre started as a result of White attempts to suppress Black voting,” from the Wikipedia Encyclopedia. No one in the State of Florida was
charged with murder, and there was no investigation by the police. In 1951 in Cocoa ,Florida, Harry T. Moore and his wife were killed by a bomb for registering Blacks to vote by the KKK. A-gain, no one in Florida was charged with murder, and no one knows exactly when the police started to protect Blacks when they voted. But, one thing for sure, voting in certain Florida towns was dangerous, and even in the sixties and seventies you could lose your life voting. So a racist dog whistle from the GOP candidate in 2018 should not come as a surprise. US Congressman Ron DeSantis has started the race for Florida Governor by calling Mayor Andrew Gillum a monkey. This is a code word for the
When a Father…
The reluctance to come forward after being sexually harassed
We sons observe our fathers in awe at first, because of the size differential. But as the luster of the bluster wears off, sons see exactly what kind of man their fathers are by the way they treat and care for the women in their lives – their wives, their sons’ mothers, other relatives. By Sean C. Bowers, NNPA Newswire Contributor Seeing one’s son, not as the next generational offspring, but rather as “competition” sets the stage for a toxic relationship. Because fathers are supposed to discipline and guide their sons, it is incumbent upon fathers to be able to exemplify self-discipline and leadership. When fathers are undisciplined or scatterbrained, this causes their sons to see they can choose to emulate these behaviors or to try and avoid the same failed traits. When fathers are absent or mentally checked out of the father / son dynamic, this leaves sons to puzzle their own survival skills, direction, and life plan. Some fathers actually see their sons competing for Mom’s time, love and attention. Later, these types of fathers view their sons’ successes as somehow up-staging Dad — showing him up. Narcissism in fathers is all too common in today’s America: Over half of our children come from divorced homes. Destructive Dads pass down their flawed insecurities and fears to their sons, sometimes knowingly, sometimes unaware. Narcissism’s biggest danger is the father-in-question’s ability to self-justify or rationalize their limited mental approach to the task of raising their sons in a positive, loving environment. Whether in the case of Anita Hill or Christine Ford, the word of a woman is not simply challenged but vilified should she choose to speak up against alleged sexual misconduct. Such a scenario discourages anyone from coming forward. By Bill Fletcher, Jr., NNPA Newswire Contributor The debates that have unfolded in connection with the campaign to appoint Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court increasingly centered on charges of alleged sexual assault by him against Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. The attacks on Dr. Ford have come to represent everything that is so blatantly misogynistic about current U.S. society. The political Right has pulled out all of the stops to demean her character. One of the critical ‘arrows’ that is being fired is one that goes like this: why didn’t she come forward sooner? If such a question was asked by a 12-year old, it would be quite understandable. But in a society that has a very ambivalent attitude—indeed hypocritical attitude—towards sex, such a question should not need to be asked. The first answer is that most victims of sexual harassment—particularly women victims—do not believe that they will be believed. It really is as simple as that. When women see the way those who alleged sexual assault are treated, they are discouraged from opening their mouths. (Read full story at www.thewestsidegazette.com)
I Am Dr. Ford!
Letter to Editor President Trump has the power to pardon federal criminals but not state criminals By James J. Hankins By Earl Ofari Hutchinson The U.S. Supreme court will hear a case this October that, if passed 5 to 4, would prevent people who were given a presidential pardon for a federal crime from being tried for that crime at the state level. This new law would allow TRUMP to pardon his children- Eric, Ivanka, Donald Jr.- and son-in-law Jared Kushner from the numerous crimes they committed in New York. Brett Kavanaugh can and will give TRUMP two more victories by overturning Roe and stopping any indictment against him. This “coup” would give TRUMP and the GOP the triple crown. While TRUMP is tweeting, saying and doing something shocking in public every day to control the media with “BREAKING NEWS”, he is slipping case NO. 17-646 Gamble vs U.S. (separate sovereigns) and other backstabbing actions in through the back door. Save our DEMOCRACY by telling your two U.S. Senators to vote no on Kavanaugh
I am Dr. Ford. I am a man, but I say that because of the terrible remembrance and epiphany that her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee brought back to me. I watched Dr. Ford choke up and almost fight back tears as she bravely told the traumatic story of the attempted rape of her by Brett Kavanaugh. My mind flooded back to that day some years back when a teen family member told me of the attempted violent sexual assault against her by a man she thought was a friend. That didn’t end the horror. She then told me that he continued to stalk her even coming to her college class. Like so many men then, my first thought was, “Did this really happen.” But then I saw the scars on her body from where she fought off the attacker and heard the unmistakeable terror in her voice as the tears streamed down. This was not some made up tale. I knew I had to act. I drove to the campus, and with two campus police in tow confronted him. (Read full story at www.thewestsidegazette.com)
base, and it is telling everyone who is white, they must vote in this election Republican. According to the Quinnipiac University Poll, Gillum is winning by 9% points, but the NBC Poll has Gillum ahead by 4% points. Ninety (90%) of Republicans are voting for DeSantis in the polls, and in mid-term elections, more Whites usually vote. In 2016 election, Hilary was winning in the polls during the end of the campaign, but she lost on Election Day, because Republicans showed up at the polls and voted. Florida is a swing state, where the most important races are decided by the slimmest of margins. In the last week, Congressman DeSantis has charged the Gillum camp as anti-Semitic and supporting The Dream Defenders, and Council on American Islamic Relations, who are critical of Israel. There are 630,000 Florida Jews in the state, and they will become a key demographic in the governor’s race. DeSantis was strategic by selecting the first Cuban American women, Miami Rep. Jeanette Nunez as his lieutenant Governor, and the Hispanic and women vote will be split. Gillum is leading with the Black vote by, 98% to 2% and the Hispanic vote by 59% to 40%. DeSantis is winning with the white vote in the state by 53% and 43% for Gillum. Gillum’s strategy is to win with a strong ground game and over 50 political offices around the state. DeSantis will continue to fight with a smear campaign, and Trump will give more resources and support to the state of Florida. The Republicans are not beyond cheating, and the campaign will get uglier and meaner The youth, the African Americans, the Caribbean’s, the Haitians, the progressive Whites, women and seniors must organize and unite, because the fight is in the trenches. If the Blacks don’t remember their history and people of color stay home, Gillum cannot win.
The Gantt Report SCOTUS pick more about money than politics By Lucius Gantt People that sit on court benches are people just like you that come from communities like yours, are educated in schools similar to yours and have imperfections just like you have. You have good and bad people in your neighborhood and you have good and bad judges on SCOTUS. President Donald Trump has taken full advantage of a Republican plot to block and deny most, if not all, judicial nominations made by former President Barack Obama and to rush through each and every judicial nomination made by America’s Liar in Chief. This country’s most conservative men and women, described as the Trump base, will support the nominations of any judges that Trump tells them to support. Even if the nominees are liars, cheaters, sex criminals, mean spirited, alcoholics or closet klansmen, Republicans that are terrified of “Tweets” will rubber stamp whatever nominations that the President tells them to. However, don’t get your mind twisted and turned by your favorite cable news networks and don’t get fooled by the news sources you hate! Political punks and pirates want you to think considerations of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to become a member of the Supreme Court of the United States is all about a fight between Democrats and Republicans. It is not! Most people in America had no problem in accepting Trump’s earlier SCOTUS nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch. Gorsuch “acted” like he would be fair. He acted like he had the appropriate mindset and demeanor. The reason supremacists, separatists, skin heads, neo-nazis and ku klux klansmen desire to go to war to get Kavanaugh’s nomination confirmed by any means necessary is because the Special Prosecutor is on top of financial crimes committed by the President, his children, his son-in-law and his Russian handlers! Greatness
Replace Ineffective School Superintendent By Kevin Palmer Out of control best describes discipline incidents in the Richmond County school system located in Augusta, Georgia. According to data supplied by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, in 2017 Richmond County had a total of 30,368 discipline incidents. To put that number in perspective, from 2014 to 2017, the Columbia County school system had a total of 28,854 discipline incidents. In just one year, Richmond County had more discipline incidents than Columbia County had in four years. Since Dr. Angela Pringle became Richmond County school superintendent in 2014, discipline incidents have skyrocketed. From 2014 to 2017 there have been a total of 100,266 discipline incidents. Other than giving lip service by blaming parents, the leadership has been unwilling to acknowledge mounting classroom discipline problems may result from a high number of ineffective teachers with poor classroom management skills. An article titled, Discipline or Classroom Management, by Bulent Tarman, stated, “Effective managers were defined as teachers who have a minimum of student misbehavior and high levels of time-on task and were found to be more skilled at preventing disruptions from occurring in the first place.” Moreover, “Effective managers intervened more quickly when disruptions occurred than did ineffective man-agers, and their intervention got results more quickly.” Albert Einstein defined insanity as, “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” That means Richmond County school board leaders must now do what college leaders do when undisciplined football teams do not win games. They replace the head coach.
Periodic greatness is the result of overcoming obstacles. True greatness comes from removing those obstacles so that others won’t have to overcome them. By Sean C. Bowers, NNPA Newswire Contributor
I do not dare to be great. I dare to think, hope and believe that I can do great deeds. Greatness is accomplished in direct proportion to the good our deeds do for others. Measuring the quality of a deed’s greatness and goodness is an imperfect science from the start. Herein lies our challenge: To overcome expectations, perceptions and biases and break through to accomplish something is a personal battle between potential, delivery and performance. Periodic greatness is the result of overcoming obstacles. True greatness comes from removing those obstacles so that others won’t have to overcome them. Is it great to have unfair advantages, to use them and maintain them? Or is it far greater to dare to disassemble them from the root cause, thus clearing and leveling the playing field? Great leaders, whose actions have changed history for the better, often did so because pressures forced them to. Like striving for the Jeffersonian dream of true democracy — unattainably perfect, yet well worth the pursuit. Leaders are not born, nor are they groomed. Leaders are forged over time by cause and effect. Often, great leaders are virtually drafted by their own visions of a better way, of what is possible, or of what could be. This occurs when they are at the crossroads of their existence and a world-at-large that is ripe for their concepts, ideals and attitudes to be set free. Sensitive people, like King, Gandhi, and Jesus displayed compassion and empathy for their fellow man through personal sacrifice. (Read full story at www.thewestsidegazette.com)

Dolphins Lose Rivalry Game to Patriots for 89 yards while the Patriots only had 6 penalties for 57. On a brighter note, the Dolphins still lead the AFC East standings at 3-1, while the Patriots
are in second place at 2-2, and the Jets and Bills are tied at 13. The Dolphins have another road game against the Bengals and if they want to have a chance at winning they can’t bring this same performance to
Cincinnati that they brought to Foxborough. The Bengals are also 3-1 tied with the Ravens at the top of the AFC North division. The Bengals just won a tight road game against the Falcons 37 to 36. This road game will be important to the Dolphins, this is not a must win
but I will say this is a have to win game. This is another tough road game, even though they have a week to tighten things up the Bengals also have that week to prepare. This big loss to the Patriots will serve as a wakeup call and the team will be ready for the Bengals. Sunday October 7 it’s on.

what was supposed to be an intense rivalry game, ended up being a one-sided contest, the final score was 38 to 7. Dolphins were undefeated at 3-0 coming in to this game while the Patriots were 1-2. From the opening kickoff it was a total beatdown. The Patriots were having their way from the first quarter until the end of the game. The Dolphins played like they were 1-2, while the Patriots looked like they were undefeated. They were moving the ball with ease, whether it was on the ground or through the air. It was 24 to zero by halftime, and Dolphins didn’t score until the fourth quarter. Overall, Tom Brady had a pretty good game passing for 274 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, completing 23 passes on 35 attempts (65.7%). Sony Michel had an ex-cellent rushing game with 112 yards and a touchdown. Although the Dolphins defense was able to hold Gronkowski to only 44 receiving yards, Brady was able to find other targets to throw to. On the other hand, the Dolphins stalled out drive after drive and couldn’t find ways to answer the Patriots drives. The running backs could not find ways to gain any yards, Frank Gore led the running backs with 41 yards rushing while Kenyan Drake and Kalen Ballage had a total of six yards rushing. Before Ryan Tannehill left the game, he had an average game going 11/20 with 100 passing yards and an interception. Brock Osweiler threw the Dolphins only touchdown pass to Frank Gore. Everything that could go wrong ended up going wrong for the Dolphins that afternoon. Not only could they not move the ball, they couldn’t get any stops either. Injuries to key players have also played role,as a few practice squad players had to be called up to the main roster because the starters are out. However, in sports, there are no excuses! The next man up must be ready to step in. Compared to the Patriots the Dolphins shot themselves in the foot yesterday with penalties. The Dolphins had 10 penalties

Deconstructing Reconstruction in the aftermath of Baton Rouge, Falcon Heights and Dallas After Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Falcon Heights, Minnesota there was Dallas, Texas. After rogue cops unceremoniously killed two Black men, a deranged shooter killed five police officers. The shooter, identified as Micah Johnson, reportedly said that he wanted to kill White police officers. By Julianne Malveaux (NNPA News Wire Columnist) After Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Falcon Heights, Minnesota there was Dallas, Texas. After rogue cops unceremoniously killed two Black men, a deranged shooter killed five police officers. The shooter, identified as Micah Johnson, re-
portedly said that he wanted to kill White police officers. Too many commentators referred to his middle initial “X.’ in an effort to be more racially provocative. Too many, like the unrepentant racist and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, used the shooter’s actions to excoriate the Black Lives Matter Movement. The phrase “Black Lives
Matter” is not racist, because it simply reflects our nation’s history. From our founding until today, there have been too many opportunities to legalize the misguided notion that Black lives do not matter. The fact that our Constitution reduces enslaved African Americans into a fraction of a person suggests that Black lives did not
matter, at our nation’s founding, as much as White lives did. The differences in the terms and conditions of indentured servitude for Whites and enslavement for Afro-descendents further cemented the notion that Black lives did not matter as much as white lives did. The persistence of enslave-
ment, and the contradictions that came from the practice of “breeding” (i.e., treating Black people as animals to increase “stock”) heightened contradictions, because the slave owners were selling their children and siblings. (Read full story at: www.thewestsidegazette.com)
Julianne Malveaux said that when the 13th Amendment was passed, there was no playbook to detail how our nation would transcend enslavement.

Wilson issued the following statement on calls for an FBI investigation of Judge Kavanaugh:“Like millions of Americans, I was both riveted and dismayed by Christine Blasey Ford’s televised testimony as she bravely shared with strangers who would judge her details of the sexual assault she experienced 36 years ago. Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans, all men, hired a woman attorney to question Dr. Ford to avoid the appearance of persecuting a victim, but that pretense fooled no one. “Dr. Ford delivered a compelling and credible account of her horrific encounter with Brett Kavanaugh and I believe her. He, on the other hand, was frequently dismissive, rude and utterly unconvincing. Moreover, despite all of the fear and anguish that she has already experienced since her story became public, Ford still supported the call for an FBI investigation of the incident, while Kavanaugh and Senate Republicans did not. What were they afraid we would learn? “The American Bar Association, which has given Kava-
naugh its highest ranking, also agreed there should be an investigation into the accusations against him. Failing to do so, ABA’s president wrote in a letter to the committee’s chairman and ranking Democrat, will ‘negatively affect the great trust necessary for the American people to have in the Supreme Court.’ “Thankfully the committee, after much debate, decided today to ask the White House to instruct the FBI to conduct a background check into Kavanaugh. It’s the right thing to do because proceeding with a confirmation vote at this point would be adding insult to the grave injury sexual harassment and assault victims everywhere already have endured. BALTIMORE – NAACP, the nation’s foremost civil rights organization, is looking to mobilize personal networks, activists and supporters to energize its base ahead of the 2018 midterm elections on November 6. “Our lives are on the ballot this year, so it is absolutely crucial that African-Americans as a whole participate in these midterms elections at rates that reflect our true voting power,” said NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson. “Today on National Voter Registration Day, we’re urging everyone to use their power to register and mobilize new voters and get involved in one of the most important election in our nation’s history.” President Johnson’s statement echoes the urgency of NAACP’s message for voting this year. The increase of brutal #livingwhileblack incidents, the continuous stream of hateful rhetoric, disrespect and racist policies coming from the White House, all point to the notion that Black lives, civil rights and the issues of

The NAACP recognizes this threat and is engaging voters based on the all too real idea of “Vote! Our lives depend on it.” (Read full story at: www.thewestsidegazette.com)
South Florida Sun Sentinel endorses Mayor Andrew Gillum For Governor (Cont'd from FP) Continued cuts to traditional public schools would hurt Florida. Health care. Gillum wants the Legislature to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Doing so would give about 400,000 poor people access to health care, almost half of them in working families. It would
also mean we’re no longer paying for expanded access in 33 other states without any benefit to ourselves. A 2015 Florida Senate study said expansion would boost the state’s economy. That would help Florida. DeSantis opposes Medicaid expansion. And if Congress had repealed Obamacare, as he repeatedly voted to do, nearly two million Floridians would
have lost health care coverage through the exchanges. Plus, insurance companies would have been able to deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions — which includes most of us. DeSantis would bring the same attitude to the Governor’s Mansion. That would hurt Florida. The environment. Gillum calls climate change an “urgent
threat.” He understands the economic imperative we face as insurance companies prepare to build risk into premiums. Gillum would make the state’s response a priority. That would help Florida. DeSantis says climate change is not a problem state (Read full story at: www.thewestsidegazette.com)
Proposed Florida Constitutional Amendments: See what’s on the state’s 2018 ballots The November election includes 13 Florida constitutional amendments. Here’s what they all mean. When you head to the ballot box in November, you’ll vote on 13 statewide constitutional amendments along with candidates seeking seats in the U.S. Senate and House, state House and Senate and the state executive branch, among others. The number of ballot amendments is the most since 1998 and propose measures like betting on dog racing, prior felon suffrage, school board term limits and vaping indoors. Amendments need 60-percent approval from voters to be green-lighted. Here are the 13 proposed statewide amendments and what they mean. Amendment 1: Increased Homestead Property Tax Exemption What it means: Would increase the portion of a home’s value that’s exempted from non-school property taxes. The changes would apply to the value of a home between $100,000 and $125,000 with the maximum exemption climbing to $75,000. Amendment 2: Permanent Cap on Non-homestead Parcel Assessment Increases What it means means: Would limit increases to assessment rates to 10-percent per year. Secures an existing cap on non-homestead property assessments. Amendment 3: Voter Approval for Casino Gambling What it means: Would provide voters with the “exclusive right to decide whether to authorize casino gambling” and expansions in the state. Both the state legislature and the voters currently have the authority to authorize casino gambling through constitutional amendment. Amendment 4: Restorage of Voting Rights for Individuals with Felony Convictions What it means: means Would restore the right to vote for more people with prior felony convictions upon completion of their sentences. It would exclude those convicted of murder and felony sexual offenses. Amendment 5: Increase to Two-Thirds Vote Majority in Legislature to Increase Taxes What it means: means Would increase the majority needed in the state Legislature to two-thirds to impose, approve or raise taxes. It would also mean it would take only a third of members in either the House or Senate to block tax increases or repeal exemptions. Amendment 6: Rights of Crime Victims, Increase Judge Retirement Age, and Interpreting Statutes What it means: Would add a list of rights for crime victims, known as a Marsy’s Law. The other two aspects of this measure would increase the retirement age for judges to 75 and would prohibit judges from deferring to administrative agencies’ interpretations of a law when ruling in cases. Amendment 7: First Responder and Military Member Survivor Benefits, and Public Colleges and Universities What it means: Would require employers to provide benefits to surviving spouses of first responders if they die on duty, and it would require the state to provide benefits to surviving spouses of active-duty military members who are killed. The last parts of the measure would require university trustees to agree by a third-thirds super-majority to raise college fees and establish the state college system in the state Constitution. Universities are currently in the Constitution, but state colleges (community colleges) are not. Amendment 8: School Board Term Limits and Duties, Control of Certain Public Schools by the State, and Civic Literacy in Public Education What it means: Creates a consecutive eight-year term limit for school board members, allows state governments to control public schools not established by the school board and requires the Legislature to promote civic literacy in public education. Amendment 9: Prohibition of Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling and Prohibition of Vaping in Enclosed Indoor Workplaces What it means: It would ban offshore drilling for oil and natural gas on all lands beneath state waters. The measure also bans the use of vapor-generating electronic devices, including electronic cigarettes, in indoor workplaces. Amendment 10: State and Local Government Structure and Operation What it means: Would add a state Department of Veterans Affairs and create a state office of Domestic Security and Counter-terrorism. The measure would also require the Legislature session to start in January rather than March in even-numbered years. Lastly, the measure includes a proposal that would require five county-level offices to be elected statewide: sheriffs, tax collectors, property appraisers, supervisors of elections and clerks of circuit court. Many counties already elect these positions. Amendment 11: Repeal of Prohibition of Foreign-Born Persons Owning Property, Removal of Obsolete High-Speed Rail Provision, and Revision of the Effect of a Repeal of a Criminal Statute What it means: Would do away with the prohibition against foreign-born persons from owning, inheriting, disposing or possessing property. The measure removes a provision that stated a highspeed rail system be developed in Florida and revises a provision on criminal prosecution so that it’s clear that repealing a criminal statute does not retroactively affect the prosecution of a previouslycommitted crime. Amendment 12: Lobbying and Abuse of Office by Public Officers What it means: Expands restrictions on lobbying for compensation by former public officers, creates restrictions on lobbying by current public officers and prohibits certain abuse of public office for personal benefit. Amendment 13: Ban on Racing and Betting on Dog Racing What it means: The measure would prohibit the racing of and betting on greyhounds and other dogs after a specified date.

What Bae rally wants this cuffing season
As we approach holiday season aka cuffing season, we must discuss what bae really wants. Without a doubt, women can be complex and maybe even confusing, but we are necessary. Hence, as I reflect on my personal idiosyncrasies, it is evident that a navigational system could prove useful. Starting with the numbers, according to cenus.gov, there are 110.6 single people nationwide. Percentage wise, unmarried people in America age 18 and older make up 45.2 percent of all U.S. residents. Of that number, over 60% have never been married. And last, for every 100 single women, there are 88 single men. This means, I am definitely speaking to somebody, so let’s begin. It is often quoted that when a man finds a wife, he finds a good thing, but I think our complexities often make us hidden in plain sight. Case in point, today’s woman works, runs a business part-time, is possibly a mom and a stepmom, she cares for an elderly relative, attends networking and empowerment events and is required to show strength and mental fortitude in all areas of her life and the lives of others. She is every-where and everything to most people, except vulnerable. Yet, behind closed doors, wig, make-up and stilettos off, she is ready to submit. She wants to be desired, but she is waiting on you to make the first move. Truth be told, she can handle the rest.
Pastor John Gay says it this way, “She can do what I can’t do on my own. What I give her in concentrated form, she can multiply. The power of a woman is the power of multiplication.” (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=cFpHCBubf_E). We are goddess ladies. We turn groceries into dinner. We turn houses in homes, and we transform his dreams into blueprints. We are his helpmate by design. Now that I have sold you on Bae, here is a small list of what she (we) would like this season. Fellas be bold but not overbearing. This means at the next networking event, football game or even Bible study session you attend, make the first move. Go beyond eye contact and have a conversation that says I am interested in knowing more about you. Get her a genuine compliment, save her a seat, walk her to her car and ask for her number not her Instagram. We want to know you are interested. Be persistent but not typical. While the “good morning beautiful” text is thoughtful, it’s overused without clear intent. Try “Good morning beautiful, what time can we meet for dinner later? I would like to make reservations.” If you are into classics, consider a classic that never gets old, show up with flowers and chocolates instead of sending emoji hearts and flowers. Bae wants to truly be appreciated by you. If you picked a Proverbs 31 woman, she is of noble character, worth far more than rubies, and her work is worthy of praise. She is considerate, blessed and Godfearing. Between work, the bros, and your mom, make time to show her that she interests you. Put thought in the moments you create with her. Here are a few ideas: Painting with a twist, private dinner, salsa lessons, matinee movie dates, pedicures, matching outfits, breakfast on the beach, park picnics, double dates for dessert and so much more. And when you show up, be funny not goofy. Communicate but don’t over talk. Compliment her but avoid excessive flattery. Above all, express your happiness with a smile. There is nothing more attractive that a happy man. Ladies, please share this edition of On the Scene, with every single man you know. He will thank you later. However, I must admit this list could change from woman to woman, and other items could be added without warn-

A Message From Our Publisher (Cont'd from FP) assault against the Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Donald Trump, an American businessman and current President of the United States, has been accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment, including non-consensual kissing or groping, by at least nineteen women since the 1980s. Those accusations have resulted in three widely reported instances of litigation. These are only a few of the noted incidents of lewd and unscrupulous acts from those who are purported to be respectful people in prominent positions and should, one would think, know better. People are showing up at rallies with guns and assault rifles. The Republican Right is so wrong that it is about to cause an implosion in this country. While the Democrats are being so politically correct, they are allowing the incorrectness of others to dictate the heated atmosphere of this country. Floods, diseases, political mutiny and lack of respect, family turmoil added with Church dysfunction, all point to a world in chaos. While one might disagree, the oblivious is for certain; we are doomed if we don’t find a way to respect one another. How long will the enemy mock you, O God? Will the foe revile your name forever? Psalm 74:10 These vile acts are not needed, but they show people spewing pent-up irritations at those of differing hues. Are they coincidences or are they indications of what we are about to witness on the many stages of life. Weapons by the hundreds are being brought to every level of our schools, and our students are being killed in our schools as well as continually on our streets. Who has the remedy? Who is willing to take a stand for what is right or better yet, do we know what is right? What we once considered unacceptable has now become tolerable, and we are quick to defend that which is inadequate for an amendable way of life. It’s as if we are giving up and allowing the sick people to run the asylums. There is only so much a people can withstand, tolerate or stomach before something regurgitates, backs up or blows up. The ‘finger in the dike’ won’t solve the problem; pointing fingers will not either. There must be concerted actions of ALL those concern that we don’t pull this country further apart. I pray that what appears to be a strong hole for the wicked is only a mirage and a figment of my imagination coupled with my nothingness compared to the indeterminate KNOWLEDGE of GOD. “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Selah Psalm 82:2(NIV) It is not for us to know; we must have FAITH supported by good works of an equal action! “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJ)
David vs Goliath/Survivor Now Playing Out in Figi
By Gregg Reese OW Contributor PART II Inspiration from abroad Curiously, “Survivor” did not originate in America. It was derived from the British “Castaway,” (conceived in 1994 and launched in 2000) which became a hit for the British Broadcasting Company (BBC). This initial success was replicated in Sweden with the 1997 “Expedition Robinson (an allusion to the literary classics “Robinson Crusoe” and “Swiss Family Robinson,” two tales of European natives surviving in tropical climates), which predated its 2000 debut in the United States. What we see on primetime has been refurbished with all the production values and bells and whistles of American sensationalism, while keeping the core ingredients that likely keep viewers tuned in for every weekly update: a grouping of individuals who might otherwise not interact in everyday society, and the spectacle of seeing them react under pressure. The premise of the show is simple enough: divide groups of competitors into two separate “tribes,” place them on an isolated locale, usually a remote island, wherein they must fend for themselves in seeking food and shelter in order to subsist. Periodically these “tribes” are brought together for specific challenges or competitions on the path of determining who is the fittest of the fit. Along the way, this makeshift narrative is enhanced by the participants ability to cooperate, engage, and outwit their compatriots/rivals on the way to a one million dollar cash award as the final “Survivor.” As one might expect, the assembly of various individuals in a hostile environ leads to internal conflict, manifested in the infamous tribal council ceremonies, in which contestants must account for individual behaviors and indiscretions, with the offending parties being “voted off.” A personal challenge A testament to its overall popularity was the competitive process just to apply to appear on the show. Prospective applicants must submit videotapes as a preliminary step before being interviewed. One of those intrigued by this phenomenon was a rising corporate media executive at Times Mirror, which owned the L.A. Times. For Natalie Cole, a self-admitted type “A” personality and natural competitor, the time consuming routine of career progression and raising a family precluded the urge to spread her wings by testing her mettle against other, younger, more viral challengers before a national audience. Fast forward decades later, children grown and financially solvent, the perks of middle age mean the luxury to reflect and delve into a “bucket list” of fascinating experiences unencumbered by the responsibilities of “the real world.” For Cole, the episode she was about to engage in was not so much a “middle life crisis,” that the opposite gender might undertake in the form of buying a Porsche or acquiring a “trophy wife.” Rather, hers was a continuation of the challenges of climbing the corporate ladder, or launching a private business as a means of “measuring up.” “I was attracted to going forward as I wanted to prove to myself that I haven’t “aged-out”; that I could do whatever the 20 somethings could do,” she declares. Abetted solely by the assistance of an offspring with the technical expertise often lacking by contemporaries of her generation, she produced a video “self portrait” to serve as entry in the selection process. A subsequent “audition” before Executive producer/ host Jeff Probst had Natalie Cole calmly declaring that she would be standing before as the last (wo)man standing. “I set goals, gather information and resources to support my goals, visualize myself achieving my goals, and then go after them,” she says of the process that enabled her to reach the apex of the hierarchy of a major newspaper, and establish a successful periodical in the ranks of the Black publishing industry. Building Bridges from Africa to America (Cont'd from FP) understand the history and cultural significance of Ile-Ife, as well as to better inform African Americans and others throughout the world about the development opportunities and important cultural intersections between our sisters and brothers in Nigeria and across Africa and with people of African descent throughout the global African Diaspora. “It has truly been a blessing to be a part of this unique and meaningful pilgrimage to IleIfe, Nigeria,” said Dr. Chavis. “African Americans have a history that did not begin or end with slavery in the United States. It is time we fully reconnect with who we really are without the trappings and ornaments of White supremacy.” Ile-Ife is widely regarded as the cradle of the Yoruba race and culture. According to Yoruba myth, Ile-Ife is deemed the cradle of human existence
based on the collection of historical information, empirical facts and science. Ile-Ife is celebrated as the original source of all mankind and The Olojo Festival is celebrated annually as the spiritual confirmation that God created the world and deposited the elements of creation in Ile-Ife. The city of Ile-Ife is widely known for its many sacred shrines and spiritual sites that are meant to regularly highlight, promote and remember the Yoruba race and its cultural identities. The members of the NNPA delegation were able to visit many of these shrines and sites during their visit to the historical land.
