On Friday, September 16, members of the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee (CBC PAC) took a break from the CBC Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference and hastily called a press conference to address Donald Trump’s comments about the “Birther Movement” during a press event at Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C. The Republican presidential nominee and reality television star said that President Barack Obama was born in the U.S., but not before claiming that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton started the Birther Movement. Mainstream media treated Trump’s announcement like some groundbreaking revelation, and it dominated the news cycle for the rest of the

day. Trump has been called the leader of the Birther Movement for his role in promoting the falsehood that President Obama was not born in the United States. Trump continued these attacks, even after President Obama released his birth certificate in 2011. “Donald Trump is nothing more than a two-bit racial arsonist who has done nothing, but fan the flames of bigotry,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.). Then Jeffries ran down Trump’s legacy of racial discrimination and reminded journalists about the raciallycharged, full-page advertisement that the real estate developer purchased in a number of newspapers in New York City that called for the reinstatement of the death penalty during the controversial “Central Park Five” case. The five teenagers, who were interrogated until they

delivered forced confessions about the sexual assault and then convicted of the crime, were later proven innocent. “Run to the polls and make sure this hater is not elected President of the United States… he’s not man enough to render an apology to the President of the United States,” Jeffries added. Rep. G.K. Butterfield (DN.C.), speaking as a board member of the CBC PAC, called Donald Trump “a disgusting fraud” and noted that the Republican presidential candidate began to question President Obama's citizenship almost from the very beginning of his first term. “He would never have done this to Mitt Romney…he would have never done this to any other White [person] running for president,” said Butterfield. When our calls for help end in death They said to Samuel, “Pray to the Lord your God for us, your servants, that we may not die for having added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.” --1 Samuel 12:19 By Bobby R. Henry, Sr. I want to try and shed some light into some dark and scary places that seem to avoid light, like roaches running from a can of Raid. Many times we have called for help only to find ourselves in a much worst predicament than we were when we called for some relief. My heart bleeds for the families who sought assistance for protection from a love one who has been tormented beyond any normal understanding of their wayward behaviors. In this time of unusual temporary dysfunction caused by intoxication, not adhering to prescribed meds or some related military sickness even in the heated circumstances of domestic altercations- help may truly be needed.

HIV is claiming the lives of African Americans at an alarming rate. But how much do we really care? By Shantell E. Jamison Full disclosure. I am HIVnegative. Thankfully, I can say that I do not have to take several pills a day to survive. I am not among the roughly 37 million people living with HIV, and my immune system isn’t compromised by a horrific parasitelike illness. I do not have to be concerned with a virus as simple as the flu or common cold taking me out, or being discriminated against for being sick. And for these reasons, I can wholeheartedly admit that I do not care about HIV as much as I should. At least I didn’t until now. This isn’t something that I am proud of. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of my position until arriving at the 20th Annual United States Conference on AIDS (USCA) — thanks to the Black AIDS Institute — last week.

If you asked me before attending the conference, I’d say I gave a whole lot of damns about HIV/AIDS. As a Black woman who grew up in a lowincome community absent of proper healthcare, how could I not? I would certainly get offended at such a question and I would rush to tell you about all of the articles on the subject that housed my byline. I’d proudly point you in the direction of works where I’ve contributed to the narratives of those impacted by HIV, because they, too, deserve to be heard. But still, after it was all said and done and my job was completed, I went on with life and didn’t think about HIV until another headline came up. But for some reason we consciously — and sometimes subconsciously — discriminate against HIV and those who are affected by it. African American Poll: Hillary Clinton extends edge against Donald Trump Museum educates, inspires and sparks personal memories

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will officially open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016. More of a narrative than a museum, the exhibits tell the story of African Americans from slavery to the nation’s first Black president. Courtesy photo.

Back on the campaign trail after being diagnosed with pneumonia and a subsequent break from campaigning, Hillary Clinton plugged her leaking lead against Donald Trump, according to this week’s NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll. She now enjoys 50 percent support among likely voters and Trump has 45 percent support. As the first votes have already been cast via absentee and early voting in several states across the country, the NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll will now report out results using a likely voter screen instead of just registered voters. Previously, we reported out results among respondents who indicated they were registered to vote. The race looks slightly narrower among likely voters than it does among all registered voters in a two-way match up. Among likely voters, 50 percent support Clinton and 45 percent support Trump. Among registered voters, she holds a 6point lead over Trump — 49 percent to 43 percent. Last week, Clinton led Trump by 4 points among registered voters, 48 percent to 44 percent. In a four-way match up of likely voters, Clinton leads Trump by 5 points—45 percent to 40 percent. Libertarian Gary Johnson now has 10 percent support and Jill Stein maintains 4 percent. Johnson loses a single point when viewing these results using our likely voter screen. Among registered voters this week he had 11 percent— among likely voters, he has 10 percent. Stein maintains 4 points among registered voters and likely voters.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton speaks on Sept. 17, 2016 in Washington, DC. In addition to expanding her lead this week, Clinton outperforms Trump on the question that asks voters who they think will win. Currently, 56 percent of likely voters think Clinton will win. Just 39 percent think Trump will win. The NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking poll was conducted online September 12 through

September 18, 2016 among a national sample of 14,326 adults who say they are registered to vote including 13,320 likely voters. Respondents for this nonprobability survey were selected from the nearly three million people who take surveys on the SurveyMonkey platform each day. Results have an error estimate of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.

By Courtney Davis WASHINGTON – The National African American Museum of History and Culture, scheduled to open this weekend to much fanfare and huge crowds, seems to have something for everyone —Black and white, young and old, rich and poor. For Remi Maarouf, who visited last Saturday as part of a special preview, the shards of glass from the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing that claimed four black girls, struck particularly hard. The exhibit that included Resurrection City, a tent community erected on the National Mall in 1968 as part of the Poor People’s March that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. planned but never lived to see, brought back special memories for Augusta Wills. Niyah Boney, a Washington 9th grader, said it was more recent history, the Black Lives Matter pieces, that resonated with him. Maarouf, Wills and Boney were among scores of a special group of Washington-area donors to the museum who visited the facility last weekend. Hundreds more who have visited the museum in recent weeks — from President Barack Obama to

Olympian Simone Manuel to 85-year-old Mary Smith of Charleston, S.C. – have said they were moved by what they saw. More of a narrative than a museum, the facility’s curators say, the exhibits are placed in a way that tells the story of African Americans from the beginning. The story begins 70 feet below the ground at the bottom level across three exhibits — “Slavery and Freedom,” “Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: Era of Segregation 1876-1968” and “A Changing America: 1968 and Beyond” – and works its way up to the top of the five-story building. Museum visitors can see pieces of a Portuguese slave ship, a slave cabin, a Boeing aircraft used to train Tuskegee Airmen, a lunch counter stool from the Greensboro sit-ins, the couch and a dress worn by Oprah on the Oprah Winfrey Show. There is Michael Jackson’s hat and jacket from his “Victory” tour, Harriett Tubman’s Shawl, Muhammed Ali’s boxing gear, Emmitt Till’s coffin, Chuck Berry’s red Cadillac Eldorado, Carl Lewis’ Olympic medals and hundreds more pieces of Black history. Gloria Snipes, who visited from Portsmouth, Va., last weekend, found the slavery exhibits the most thought-provoking.

“I thought about all the blacks who were from Africa that were torn away from their families and having to endure a trip on the ocean in the hull of a ship,” Snipes said. “It was moving to see the chains that were used to enslave people.” Snipes and her husband were among the thousands of African Americans, other individuals and corporations who made financial contributions or donated rare items so the museum could exist. Oprah Winfrey, for example, donated $12 million. NBA legend Michael Jordan and BET founder Robert Johnson are among those who each gave more than $5 million. Anthony Welters and his wife, U.S. Ambassador Beatrice Welters, gifted $2 million. Another 100 individuals and institutions, like Alfred Street Baptist Church of Alexandria, Va., donated $1 million or more. Then there are the thousands of others, charter members, who gave smaller donations and reached into their closets and donated some of the tens of thousands of exhibits. After finishing the tour Saturday, Kecia Wills of Washington said she likes how the museum is structured. (Read full story on www.thewestsidegazette.com)

CBC Member Corrine Brown loses primary battle, facing indictment By Lauren Victoria Burke (NNPA Newswire Contributor) Rep. Corrine Brown of Florida, who has been in Congress for 23 years, lost her primary battle, in late August, in the wake of a federal indictment. Brown was the second Congressional Black Caucus member to lose their seat this year. In late April, Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.) lost his primary race to State Senator Dwight Evans, 62, months after he was indicted on multiple charges. Fattah was later convicted of the charges. Brown lost to a former Florida State Senator Al Lawson, 67. Lawson had previously run for Congress in 2010 against Rep. Allen Boyd and lost. Lawson won 48 percent of the vote to Brown’s 39 percent with a third candidate receiving 13 percent of the vote. Brown and her Chief of Staff Ronnie Simmons were both indicted on 24 counts of fraud over an allegedly fake charity set up by Simmons according to the Department of Justice.

Rep. Corrine Brown of Florida, served in the United States Congress for 23 years. (Official Photo) The charges around Brown are the fourth time this year that either a Congressional Black Caucus member or a CBC chief of staff has been indicted. On April 5, Rep. John Conyers’ Chief of Staff Cynthia Martin was charged with receiving stolen property after an employee with the NFIB mistakenly began depositing money into her Congressional Federal Credit Union bank account in the sum of $13,000 as a result of writing down the wrong

account number. Prosecutors claimed that Martin refused to return the money. She later resigned as Conyer’s Chief of Staff over the incident. On August 6, Isaac Lanier Avant, the chief of staff to Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) was charged with allegedly failing to file federal tax returns for five consecutive years. All of the legal cases during 2016 involve members or their staff who have a great deal of seniority and power in Con-

For-profit colleges: Valuing profits before student achievement

By Charlene Crowell Higher education is supposed to be about opening doors to a promising future. Fortified by training, skills and credentials, a personal pathway to the middle class is the presumed goal. But in recent days, some higher education doors are closing, while others are writing checks for fines and refunds imposed by regulators. It’s almost enough for some consumers to

wonder, ‘What is really going on?’ If a for-profit college is involved, the answer is money. From a consumer perspective, dollars are dedicated and debts created in the name of higher education. Multiple for-profit in-stitutions all too often relegate education and matriculation to advertising and recruitment geared towards selling private loans. In recent years, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has sued and levied large fines against a few of these large institutions. Although specific violations varied, the bottom line was that student borrowers were getting short shrift from the institutions that promised far more. The latest unfortunate example came on September 12. CFPB charged the San Diegobased Bridgepoint Education, Inc., the parent institution for Ashford University and the University of the Rockies with engaging in “unfair, deceptive or abusive acts and practices”. As a result, Bridgeport will forgive and refund more than $23.5 million to students, including

principal and interest and additionally pay an $8 million fine to the Bureau. According to its 2015 annual report, Bridgepoint enrolled a total of 49,159 students last year. As early as 2009, Bridgepoint Education’s students were told they would pay only $25 a month for the institution’s private loans. By telling students the wrong monthly payment, Bridgepoint deceived its students and falsely advertised costs. Another recent for-profit college development led to ITT Technical Institute having its accreditation reviewed, to a loss of new federal financial aid and then finally the September 6 closure of its 130 campuses across 38 states. The closure placed an estimated 40,000 students in disarray, along with more than 8,000 employees. Under investigation by multiple jurisdictions, ITT Tech was overly dependent upon taxpayer dollars to keep its cash flowing. In 2015 alone, 68 percent of its students used federal grants and loans. To place that percentage in dollars and sense – yes, s-e-n-s-e — we’re talking

Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), speaking as a board member of the CBC PAC, called Donald Trump “a disgusting fraud” and noted that the Republican presidential candidate began to question President Obama citizenship almost from the very beginning of his first term. (Official Congressional Photo)

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) said that Trump wanted to delegitimize the most iconic African American in history. Moore and several other members of the CBC PAC called what

Trump was doing “classic dog whistle politics.” Moore added: “This is not just about degrading the reputation of Barack Obama, it’s about degrading the hopes of all African Americans.” Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) went even further and compared Donald Trump’s rhetoric and racist chants that are often heard at his rallies to the howling of wolves. “These are in-your-face kinds of efforts who are misusing the media in order to heap indignities onto the President of the United States,” said Clyburn. “[Trump is] floating a narrative that has been a part of this country for over two hundred years.” Many Democrats and some Republicans feel that Trump has led a campaign of inaccuracy that began with his effort to call into question the very legitimacy of President Obama. From asking to see his college transcripts to the so-called “Birther “issue, Trump has tried to lead a communications effort to promote the idea that President Obama is not a real

American. “Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has been based on the Birther campaign, which he founded,” said Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). “Our work now should be about unifying the country.” Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (DTexas) said that there has never been this low level of electioneering at this high a level. Jackson Lee then made a call to all minorities to get out and vote on November 8, adding that, “Mr. Trump has given up his right for running for President of the United States. He is unfit.” Rep. Charlie Rangel (DN.Y.), who is retiring at the end of the year, said that this issue is bigger than politics and the press. “We’re talking about the future of the United States,” said Rangel. “When Trump put out that Obama wasn’t President, he knew it wasn’t true at the time…what they did was to say we’re going to send the signal out and remind people his ancestors were from Africa.” Rangel continued: “I hope this is not reported as a Black issue. This is an American issue.”

gress. Brown was the ranking member of the Veterans Affairs Committee. Fattah was a member of the most powerful committee in Congress: Appropriations. Conyers is the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee. Thompson is the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee. Brown and Fattah’s defeats are not the first time two Black members of Congress have lost in the same calendar year. In 2002, former Rep. Earl Hilliard lost to former Rep. Artur Davis in Alabama as former Rep. Denise Majette lost to former Rep. Cynthia McKinney. In 1992, former Rep. Mel Reynolds beat the late Gus Savage and Rep. Bobby Rush defeated Charles Hayes in Chicago. But typically when Black members of Congress lose elections it’s because of redistricting not legal matters. Lately, there has been a spike in the number of prosecutions involving Black members of Congress in their staff. In the cases of Brown and Fattah the impact is obvious. In the cases of Conyers and Thompsons chiefs of staff the full impact is yet to be seen. about $580 million of ITT Tech’s reported revenues of $850 million, came courtesy of taxpayers. In effect, taxpayers were underwriting ITT Tech’s profits. ITT Tech was at risk of having its academic accreditation revoked, so the Department of Education required the college to post a higher bond to be used in the event of campus closings. The funds would be used to reimburse Education for liabilities related to investigations such as student refunds, student loan cancellations and other expenses. Additionally,

Donald Trump Says, “Low income Americans will not pay taxes at all” By Blacknews.com Presidential candidates promise many things when they are running for the office of President of the United States, but this one has caught the attention of millions, especially low-income Americans. Presidential Republican nominee Donald Trump recently stated that if he were elected President, “Low-income Americans will not pay taxes at all.” Trump’s campaign promise At a speech given recently at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, New York, Donald Trump stated that millions of jobs for Americans could be created by “lowering rates, streamlining deductions and simplifying the process.” He made it perfectly clear what he was talking about when he said “our plan will remove millions and millions of workers from the income tax rolls entirely.” Trump’s promised is based on the premise that “people flourish under a minimum government burden.” Eliminating taxes for low-income Americans will help grow the economy, according to Trump. However, others aren’t so convinced. But some don’t agree Others, like British forecasting firm Oxford Economics, think Trump’s idea will, instead, cost the U.S. a trillion dollars and millions of jobs. The Democratic National Committee thinks his plan is the same type of policy that led to the economic crisis in the first place. Either way, it is certainly a tempting campaign promise for all low-income Americans and would be a huge relief for the poor. VOTE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016 Education banned ITT Tech from making any unusual expenditures without federal approval, and was forbidden from allocating paying raises, bonuses or severance packages to its executives. In other words, the for-profit was sinking and no golden parachutes were allowed. From a strictly business perspective, complete closure might have seemed to be the only financial recourse. But what about the students and families who trusted these for-profit institutions? Consider the time and money invested.

The families affected by ITT Tech’s closure and Bridgepoint Education’s refunds probably trusted the institutions, faculty and staff. Unfortunately, a segment of higher education has changed – and not for the better. These recent developments with ITT Tech and Bridgepoint follow a disturbing trend in the for-profit college market. Illinois' senior U.S. Senator Richard Durbin, recently weighed in on the mounting evidence of problematic for-profit colleges. (Read full story on www.thewestsidegazette.com)

Kneeling for your rights may cause police not to protect you By Byler E. Henry The Broward County police union has a unique response to three of the Dolphins players who kneeled during the National Anthem, Ari an:Foster, Kenny Stills, and Michael Thomas. They have decided to ask the police officers not to escort the Dolphins to their games. Jeffery Bell, the president of the International Union of Police Associations, has spoken about this incident

and his stance on free speech to the Miami Herald: “I respect their right to have freedom of speech. However, in certain organizations and certain jobs you give up that right of your freedom of speech temporarly while you serve that job or while you play in an NFL game.” Although Jeffery Bell may not agree with this protest, I feel his stance is completely out of bounds. The NFL has issued a statement saying that players are encouraged but not required to stand up for the National Anthem.

The players who kneel or sit during the National Anthem are not breaking any rules; they are bringing attention to an issue that needs to be addressed while using their right of free speech. The Broward County police union is completely and utterly wrong for not wanting the players to have police protection. So because the players want to take a knee, you don’t want them to have any protection? A peaceful protest does not cause for such an action. Never once, did any of the players claim to be against

What’s the significance when polls say Presidential race tied? By Roger Caldwell There are less than seven weeks left in the Presidential campaign, and according to the New York Times, the race is tied. Clinton has outspent Trump 10 to 1, but he is closing the gap, and it appears he has momentum. The Democrats and Hillary’s campaign team are shocked, and everyone is wondering what they are doing wrong in 2016. But in 2012, the Democrats are forgetting the final Gallup polls had Romney winning 49% to 48% Obama. Only two polls had Obama winning and that was Pew Research Center and ABC news. All

the other polls had the two candidates tied, and everyone was biting their nails, or thinking that Obama was going to lose. During the first week of October in 2012, the polls were tied, and Romney moved ahead in mid-October after the first debate. President Obama’s support grew as a result of his response and handling of “Super-storm Sandy.” Many pundits also acknowledged that the Black and Hispanic vote helped determine the final results of the election. America is fundamentally divided and Hillary is considered the extreme left. Many believe there is limited enthusiasm in her campaign, and maybe Hillary is no fun. During late August, Hillary was missing in action, and she has not been transparent. When the candidate has been diagnosed with pneumonia, and most of her team is unaware of her condition, something’s wrong. The polls were wrong in 2012, and Obama decimated Romney by 51.1% to 47.3%.But Hillary has a different set of problems, starting with integrity and ending with scandals. Both candidates in 2016 are senior citizens, yet Hillary appears older. Many Democrats are dismissing her medical episodes as no big deal, but the Republicans are claiming that Hillary’s health makes her unfit for the job of President of the United States. Donald Trump has Hillary on the ropes, and he is starting to see and smell blood. As the race tightens, the polls indicate that very few Americans know what Hillary actually stands for, but she has a number of policy statements on her website. On the other hand, Trump has been talking policy for only three weeks, and if you

close your eyes, he is taking a page out of the Democratic playbook. If Trump wins the 24 states that Romney won in 2012, and wins any two of Florida, Ohio, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, he could potentially win the election. This year the polls appear to be more accurate, because the numbers are based on likely voters. The 2016 presidential race will probably end in a photo finish with both candidates running nearly even in the Electoral College. Clinton does have an advantage among minorities, women, people who make more than $75k, and people with progressive ideas and thinking. Trump has an advantage with white men, church-goers, and people who are nearing retirement age. If Hillary is able to win the youth, college students, senior citizens, and get 50% of the independent vote, she can win the election. Overall, Americans appear to be relatively uninspired by their choices for president, says the Reuters poll. One out of every five likely voters said they do not support Clinton or Trump for president. In a previous comparison, about one out of every ten likely voters wouldn’t support Obama or Romney at a similar point in the 2012 presidential campaign. It doesn’t matter which poll you use, the ground game will determine who will win the election. If youth, minorities, women, and senior citizens show up at the polls, Hillary will win. The polls are tight and this election will be a photo finish, but the debates could change the optics of the presidential election.

Trump can win theWhite House, if the GOP embraces Black Voters Raynard Jackson says that, historically, America has been at its greatest, when Blacks were actively embraced by the Republican Party. By Raynard Jackson (NNPA Newswire Columnist) On Saturday, September 10, I had the pleasure of being one of the featured speakers for the inaugural Liberty Farm Festival hosted by my good friend Martha Boneta. It was the last gathering of the who’s who of Virginia politics before this year’s presidential election. Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, Indiana’s Governor Mike Pence, was the keynote speaker. There were hundreds, if not thousands of Republicans from across Virginia in attendance. After my speech, I received a standing ovation for my remarks. My speech was, in essence, a recitation of many of the columns I have written over the years about the party needing to get serious about building relationships with the Black

community. Once I left the stage, the audience mobbed me; they wanted to talk with me and get my business card. Then I had a stunning revelation. The Republican Party’s base and rank and file members are not the problem; our leadership is the problem. There is a huge disconnect between the base of our party and the leadership of our party. Everyone that wanted to speak with me after my speech all agreed that the party needed to engage more substantively with the Black community and they admitted that they needed help in this regards and asked could they meet with me to discuss further in the not too distant future; of course I told them all, “yes.” These people represented the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV), as well as local and county parties. Their thirst to increase the diversity within our party was heartfelt and real. As I have stated many times before, the national party is totally incapable and uninterested in pursuing an honest engagement with the Black community. If it is to happen, it will happen from the ground up and from the outside in. The base of the party is willing to be led down the path of engagement with the Black community by Blacks like me, as opposed to national party leaders who think they know more about the Black community than Blacks. I often tell people: “never try to explain your vision to anyone, but rather invite them to stand beside you and to see for themselves.” (Read full story on www.thewestsidegazette.com)

America. You can love your country, and criticize your country because you want it to get better. Although America has come far from where we were we still have a long way to go and the Broward County police union proved it. Their lives won’t be protected because the players decided to exercise their first amendment rights and take a knee?

A Letter of Appreciation to all who decided to open accounts in Black Banks: This might prove to be a game-changer By Michael Grant Michael Grant, president/CEO National Bankers Association As president of the National Bankers Association, whose members include many of the Black-owned banks that received and are still receiving an unprecedented level of support from all over America, I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude by simply saying: Thank you! While efforts to get the Black community to utilize Black-owned banks is not new (Black banks have served the community since Reconstruction), what has been happening over the last two months is nothing less than phenomenal. The outpouring of support, triggered by the clarion call of rapper Killer Mike and answered by such superstars as Usher, TI, Solange and others, caught the banks by surprise - a very pleasant surprise. Black people moving millions of dollars into Black-owned banks within such a short period of time might ultimately prove to be a game-changer! The catalyst for this mobilization of people and purses was born of frustration but the timing of this effort at selfempowerment could not have been more perfect. After decades of celebrating the colossal achievements of the Civil Rights Movement, the thought leaders in Black communities across America are beginning to reach a consensus: Black America will never be able to enjoy the full privileges of first class citizenship in this country until it had secured the ultimate badge of liberty in America: financial freedom! So many of the social ills that continue to plague large swaths of America’s Black communities can be summoned up in one phrase: financial dependence. High unemployment rates, underperforming businesses, crime, inadequate education and job training opportunities, low aim and an all-pervasive nihilism - especially among many Black youths - is defining far too many Black neighborhoods in our country. Then along came this bank Black movement. The idea of using one’s dollars to improve the overall condition of the community has been resurrected. And, to be sure, opening accounts in Black banks is a great first step. But what should follow? Next, the Black bankers have a responsibility to teach banking 101 to the masses. You see, placing millions of dollars in the bank as deposits creates the need to support those accounts with investment capital. It takes both core deposits as well as capital in order for the bank to increase lending which is where real economic development takes place. When banks’ capital ratios meet regulatory requirements, they have more capacity to provide home equity loans, small business loans, mortgage lending, personal lines of credit and so forth. The bank is also the community institution that can leverage a million dollar investment eight or nine times. The bank’s increased lending capacity is how we begin growing the collective wealth of the community. For example, the more home equity loans are used to create new businesses or to expand existing ones, the more jobs (and job training) these businesses can provide. It has been estimated that if the Black community would spend one-tenth of its disposable income with Black businesses, one million new jobs could be created. So much of our economic destiny is in our own hands! Since statistics show that a qualified Black borrower has a higher probability of getting his or her loan approved at a Black bank, doing business with these banks - as a first choice - is a no brainer. The Gantt Report

Obama X By Lucius Gantt President Barack Obama made quite a splash at a 2016 Congressional Black Caucus dinner. News reports say Obama gave his most fiery Presidential speech ever as he tried to fire up some political puppets before the upcoming fall elections. I say puppets because even if the President didn’t say a mumbling word, Black elected officials would probably vote for every Democrat anyway. The people that represent African American communities in the United States have been classically conditioned that way, sort of like Pavlov’s dogs! Classical conditioning (also known as Pavlovian or respondent conditioning) refers to a learning procedure in which a biologically potent stimulus (e.g. food or campaign contributions) is paired with a previously neutral stimulus (e.g. a bell or political puppet strings). It also refers to the learning process that results from this pairing, through which the neutral stimulus comes to elicit a response (e.g. political salivation) that is usually similar to the one elicited by the potent stimulus. These basic facts, which require many qualifications, were first studied in detail by Ivan Pavlov through experiments with dogs. Anyway, in his speech, President Barack Obama sounded like Malcolm X. However, don’t get it twisted, the President wouldn’t go to sleep and dream about saying things like Minister Malcolm said with the predominately white Capitol Press Corps in the room writing, taping or videoing his every word. The tone of the President could be compared to the Malcolm X tone when Malcolm was trying to make an important point. The President was pretty much blasting Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump and praising the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. That was expected. But one comment the President said caught my attention. He suggested that votes by African Americans to support Hillary was a vote needed to continue his legacy. Well, The Gantt Report only wants to continue the “good” parts of his legacy. Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about. I don’t want to continue his legacy of letting Goldman Sachs, AIG, Lehman Brothers, Wells Fargo and other beast bankers wheel, deal and steal as much money customers and bank depositors as they want to and not going to jail like the poor parents that shoplift food to feed their children do. I don’t want to continue the legacy of spending trillions of tax dollars to fight ISIS in the Middle East and little or nothing to fight Boko Haram and other terrorists in Africa that kidnap and rape Black children. I don’t want to continue the legacy of letting Federal Prosecutors and investigative agencies rubber stamp whatever decisions that State Attorneys make in regard to the murders, beatings, false arrests and false charges of innocent Black men, women and children. Oh I could go on and on, but I try to keep my columns somewhat short. Yes, I’ll be the first to agree that President Barack Obama has been the very best President of the United States in my lifetime or, perhaps, in history. But in one significant way, Obama has treated us just like every other Commander in Chief, Blacks always put Obama first and Obama put us last with speeches for us, pardons for us and money for us! Oh, I’m sorry Obama and every other political candidate of every political party never seek to spend political money with the Black people whose votes they need so much! The “money comment” was a cruel inside joke! (Buy Gantt’s latest book, “Beast Too: Dead Man Writing” onAmazon.com and from bookstores everywhere. Contact Lucius at www.allworldconsultants.net. When our calls for help end in death (Cont'd from FP) When a call for help leads to death in family situations, that death permeates through an umbilical cord that shocks from the cradle to the grave. When that death is surrounded in a shroud of doubt caused by perceived negligence from law enforcement, the family is ripped apart like their skin is being torn from their bones. In this case, the bones represent the structure of the family and the skin is the family. Yes, we want to be protected and in some cases protected from our very own family members. That does not mean for the most part that we want our family members to be gunned down after a brief three second psychological evaluation from a nonlicensed therapist (the-rapist) without any obvious proper intervention skills. Based upon several incidents with outcomes similar these deadly characteristics, yes, that violation I’m sure has very much the same ugliness of a rape situation, which it can be compared to. Like a rape victim, violated without consent, left physically abused, psychologically, damaged and temporarily dead is this family who in their call for help, now has lost more than a family member. In the Ghost Busters movie there is a line that asks “Who you gonna call?”. The response is Ghost Busters. How ironic now the ghost of that loved one will haunt them from that time forward. In scenarios like these, the question always come: Why? We have not the answer because, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. Isaiah 55:8 My comforting words to the families that are experiencing the brokenhearted repercussions of calls made for help which, in turn were calls that were directed to bring loved ones home; are please seek the comfort of forgiveness. Forgiveness for anything that was not Godly in thought, action or emotionally towards anyone. Forgiveness is one of the most difficult things to do, especially to forgive one’s self. It is presumed that every believer will have had some involvement at real forgiveness, even if you experience it indirectly. And in the assortment of human sentiment, honest forgiveness is rated right up there as one of the greatest and most gratifying sensations that a person can feel. It’s like the floodgates of Heaven have been opened. The burdens of resentment, anger, shame and lack of self-worth is removed. There is a holy ghost “perfection” to it; battles are interchanged with reverberations of love where bombs of hatred once reigned. There are no accidents; it is the work of God running its course through us. Grace is at work accomplishing what God sent it to do. The way to true forgiveness is to have His life in us. Everything else is a reflection of the Pinocchio theory. “Dear God for those who have called on and relied on a false hope, please through Your unmatchable power of redemption let them experience Your awesome power. Amen.” GOD CAN RIGHT ANY WRONGED SITUATION.

Rep. Charles Rangel reflects on StellarPolitical Career By D. Kevin McNeir (The Washington Informer, NNPA Member) Charles B. Rangel, the celebrated dean of New York’s congressional delegation currently serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has always been one who step-ped to the front of the line on behalf of his fellow Americans. Now, the 86-year-old attorney, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the first Black chair of the highly-influential House Ways and Means Committee, the recipient of both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for service in the U.S. Army, and the former New York State Assembly member who successfully defeated long-time incumbent Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. in his 1971 quest for election to the House, will retire from office at the end of the congressional year. But, have no fear – the Harlem-born stalwart for “the least of these” says he plans to continue to serve his community, his Democratic Party and his fellow Americans. However, his primary focus will be enjoying life with his wife, Alma, and spending more time with their children and grandchildren. “After 46 years in political office, it’s going to be strange when the new Congress takes over in January and I’m not among the members,” Rangel said. “The emotional impact hasn’t hit me yet. I’m just grateful for enjoying a career that has given me the opportunity to improve

Looking at the upcoming presidential election, Rangel said he hopes his fellow Democrats will follow the example of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and make a significant investment in education and America’s infrastructure while tackling ongoing social problems and issues related to world trade. “We’ll have to wait and see what happens to the Republican Party, but I think the party of Lincoln has become a coalition of very sick people – Ku Klux Klan members, Dixiecrats and those who hate immigrants and are opposed to gay rights. And, they’re able to hide behind Donald Trump whose rhetoric resonates with a large number

of uneducated whites,” Rangel said. As for family matters and his retirement plans, the wily New Yorker said he and his wife are excited about the future. “We have a very long list of things we want to do, and we’ll need to cut it down. It will definitely include traveling, speaking engagements from time to time, and raising funds for City College,” said Rangel. clearer light. Fortunately, my wife and I are both in good

health, and so we’ll be able to enjoy this new phase in our lives.” “A career in politics tends to blind you from so much because you have to be so committed, maintain so much energy, and are constantly working to succeed on behalf of your constituents. It takes a lot out of you. Soon that will be behind me.” Rangel continued: “I can’t wait to simply wake up every day and spend more time with my wife.”

like somebody in distress who needed help. Instead of giving him a hand, they gave him bullets.” Crutcher’s twin sister, Tiffany, described him as a brother and father who was enrolled in Tulsa Community College and loved singing at church. And she criticized one of the officers in the chopper who can be heard telling a second officer aboard that Crutcher looks like “a big bad dude.” “That big bad dude — his life mattered,” she said. Earlier Monday, a dozen or so protesters gathered outside a Tulsa courthouse with signs that read “Black Lives Matter” and “Am I Next.” Crutcher’s killing comes amid an ongoing nationwide debate over police use of force, particularly among African-Americans. Crutcher was Black; Shelby is white.

Dillard High School Class of 1956 Celebrate 60th Class Reunion

1 st Row Left to Right: Henry Mosby, Lillie Clarke, Joanna Murray VermeIl Smalls, Mary Youngblood Edna Hall, Constance Hall; 2nd Row: Willie Morris, Loraine Robinson, Barbara Carter, Annie Webb, Al Jackson, Theophilus Morley 3rd Row: Lewis Tunnage, Robert Strong, Betty McCray, Argie Spann, Joseph Clair, LeNelda Woodard, Robert Kemp, Francena Duncan; 4th Row: Roberta White, Hattie Bruce, Earl Thomas. The class of 1956 of Dillard High School celebrated its 60th class reunion during a 4- day weekend, August 11 - 14 in the city of Fort Lauderdale. The primary goals for this reunion were to be an inclusive affair. All classmates were invited to attend regardless of circumstances; and to keep the activities within the community as much as possible. The opening night was a Meet, Greet and Eat at Golden Corral’s Meeting Room with classmates and their spouses. This provided an opportunity to register, update records, receive information schedule of future events, socialize and enjoy as much to eat as wished. On Friday night, the class enjoyed a wonderful evening with a Banquet and Program at Mt. Hermon Family Life Center. The deceased class mem-

bers were remembered with a brief memorial service. The highlight of the evening was a special recognition of former teachers who were in attendance and those who were unable to attend. Coach Herman Pittman and Coach Frank Robinson were presented with a plaque. Mrs. Alzora Simmons was also recognized in absentia. LeNelda Woodard and Constance Hall, who joined the class in 1953 coming from Braithwaite Junior High School in Deerfield Beach, were blessed to have one of their teachers in attendance, Mrs. Maude Storr and two who were unable to attend, Mrs. Ruth Giles and Mrs. Mary Rizor. Mrs. Cassandra Robinson, the current principal of Dillard High School, was also in attendance. She presented an update of the extraordinary

accomplishments made under her leadership. Rev. Henry Green, Jr. Pastor of Mt. Hermon AME Church was present and so was Kyle Woodard who provided the musical entertainment. Franklin Park was utilized for the class picnic and Tom Jenkins was the caterer. The fun really began when the walkers and canes were set aside to do the Electric Slide and other Line Dances. We had a blast!!!! Stated the participants. The class could not conclude its activities without a word from the Lord. Sunday morning church service was held at Mt. Hermon AME Church. Robert Kemp, who grew up in this church and is a member of this class, delivered the Word. Robert is currently serving as Presiding Elder of the Cascade District in Vancouver, Washington. The title of his message was “God Still Has Work For Us To Do.” A few points from his message were: There is power in prayer, praying and proclamation; Remember God’s righteousness, grace and mercy; and stop using God’s Blessings of old age as an excuse to not work. The message was very inspiring, uplifting and thought provoking. Everyone in attendance whether they attended one or all of the events stated that they had a wonderful, renewing time.

For aging Blacks, ‘Golden Years’ often marred by disability Black women more likely to face unique pressures that affect health While Americans are living longer than ever, a new study finds there’s still an important racial gap in health: Older Black people are more likely than older white people to live their final years with disabilities. “In 2011, at age 65, whites could expect to be free of disability for 15 out of their nearly 20 remaining years of life — about three-fourths of the time,” said study lead author Vicki Freedman. In contrast, “Blacks could expect to live 12 out of 18 years — or about two-thirds of remaining years of life — without disability. The gap was a similar size in 1982,” she said. Freedman is a research professor with the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. It’s not clear why this difference exists, but the study authors said older Black women seem particularly at risk. “The gaps persisted in part because of the lack of progress for older Black women in gaining years of active life,” Freedman said. “Why this group has lost ground is not clear. A better understanding of the root causes occurring earlier in life, particularly those that disadvantage Black women, is needed.” The study included information from national surveys and studies from three points in time. The 1982 information included about 18,000 whites and more than 1,500 Blacks. In

2004, the researchers had information from around 14,000 whites and more than 1,000 Blacks. In 2011, the study included nearly 6,000 whites and 2,000 Blacks. All of the participants were 65 or older. They answered questions about whether a disability or health problem kept

them from doing things without assistance, such as eating, getting in or out of bed, getting in or out of chairs, dressing, bathing, using the toilet, preparing meals and managing money. (Read full story on www.thewestsidegazette.com)

Question: Is the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit separate Spirits, and what are some of its functions? ANSWER: I truly believe that the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit are one of the same. Some preachers and theologians believe the opposite. Please give me a moment to explain my view. The English word ‘Hermeneutics’ is’ the science of interpretation’, and the Greek word is ‘hermeneia’ which means: translation, explanation or interpretation. When reading scripture you should be prayed up. You must allow the unction of the Spirit to teach you the correct explanation. One must interpret, exegete, and translate specific words. You must take in account the time, place and setting when the words were written. In this case it is possible to say that the word ‘ghost’ is of an older translation and the word ‘spirit’ has an innovative approach. But the meaning is the same. When Jesus stated in Bible” for John truly baptized with

water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days from now’ (Acts 1:5. KJV), or when Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:30’ And grieve not the holy Spirit of God……’ so, by the unction of the Spirit, staying prayed up when you read, and using the techniques of Hermeneutics the interpretation of the word ‘Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost is the same. In essence, or the core of the matter is that the Holy Spirit/Ghost comes from God in Heaven. AMEN. Pneumatology is Doctrine of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is referred to as the Third Person of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost). It is virtually impossible to discuss the entire functions of the Holy Spirit. Understanding the Holy Spirit is a lifetime endeavor. But I can start with an examination of my life and what the Holy Spirt has done for me. (1) The Holy Spirit convicted me and make me realize when I am doing something wrong. (2) He is my teacher and guide. He teaches me the Spirit of Truth pertaining to God’s Holy word. (3) He reminds me that through Christ I can do all things. (4) He enable me and He speaks to me on how to please God. (5) He is my comforter, my advocate, my counselor and my friend (6) He sanctified me: Just to name a few wonderful traits from God. Although the 2014 measure and the 2016 measure were both designed to legalize medical marijuana, there are some differences between the two proposals. The 2016 measure clarifies requirements for parental consent for the use of medical marijuana by minors and also further defines what is meant by “debilitating” illnesses that would qualify for marijuana as a treatment option. The 2016 measure also addresses concerns regarding caregivers by making it clear

dical marijuana issue. Bobby R. Henry, Sr., President of FABOM said, “We as Black media owners need to be able to present an unbiased report from all sides. This issues will affect us from now on.” Members of FABOM met recently in Orlando Florida To educate themselves and be properly prepared to offer valuable information that would be the best for their voting readership. Listening to both sides of Amendment 2, the group found the meeting to be one of educational awareness in all aspects of the medical marijuana issues. Acting Secretary for FABOM, Irene Pridgen of the Weekly Challenger wanted to know from both sides, what has change since the last election? “It appears to be the same old thing, what’s new? Marijuana is marijuana, isn’t it?”, asked Pridgen. “There’s been some changes in the language. The new initiative contains explicit language clarifying issues about which some opponents of Amendment 2 were concerned in 2014,” said Ben Pollara, Campaign Manager for Vote Yes. Differences between 2014 and 2016 measures

that doctors would not be immune from malpractice claims for negligent prescribing of marijuana and by limiting how many patients a caregiver can treat with marijuana Both sides were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their perspectives. Dr. Jessica Spencer of the Vote No for medical marijuana was extremely enlightening with views on how this medical marijuana was nothing like what people recreationally smoked in the 70s and early 80s. Dr. Spencer stated, “The marijuana that was being smoke then is very different from the marijuana of today. The THC content has rose from less than 1% to almost 13% today and in some other forms even higher.” There were other pertinent factors that Dr. Spencer offered to consider such as recently discovered kid-friendly pot candy infused with 250mg of THC. Dr. Spencer noted that in states like California, where medical marijuana is legally being sold, children as young as 21 months are being rushed to the emergency room as a result. Ohio officers indicted in shooting of unarmed suspect and beating case From yourblackworld.net A Cleveland police officer was indicted for negligent homicide in the shooting death of an unarmed Black man on Friday. Two former officers in East Cleveland were also indicted for kidnapping and assault for beating a Black man while he was under arrest. Cleveland officer Alan Buford was indicted for misdemeanor negligent homicide in the 2015 death of Brandon Jones. Buford and his partner, Greg King, were responding to a break-in at a grocery store in Cleveland when Jones was fatally shot. Jones was carrying a bag of stolen items when Buford and King drew their weapons. According to Cleveland.com, the officers allege that a struggle between the suspect and the two officers led to the fatal shooting. “It is not reasonable for a police officer to use deadly force if he or she does not believe a suspect poses a threat of death or serious bodily harm to the police or the public,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty said, according to Reuters. Tanya Brown, mother of Jones, says she is not getting justice for her son. “He deserves time for what he did. He killed my baby. Reality check: Do we really care about HIV? (Cont'd from FP) As human beings, we tend to pay attention primarily to what affects us the most. It is an instinct of survival, but one that can be drastically damaging if left unchecked. Thinking about any disease can be depressing, but not thinking about it can literally cost a life; maybe even your life. HIV isn’t just a disease that individuals who practice certain behaviors suffer from. You can be a straight, monogamous man and still contract HIV. You can be an innocent little child and still get HIV. You can be young, old, promiscuous or virginal and still be affected by HIV. It is a disease that does not discriminate. But for some reason we consciously — and sometimes subconsciously — discriminate against HIV and those who are affected by it. Every year, I host a breast cancer walk. I rush to participate in other breast cancer walks that have more of a national reach, and the reason why is simple. My mother is a breast cancer survivor. I’ve lost several aunts to the disease, and my best friend’s mom died this past May due to complications stemming from breast cancer. But a personal connection shouldn’t be needed to feel for human beings. A personal connection should not be the deciding factor between you posting a trending topic and actively giving a damn. It shouldn’t have taken me to fly to a conference 1,400 miles away to understand the significance of HIV. I shouldn’t have had to witness the strength, resilience and commitment of those living with and advocating for HIV awareness for me to get it. But it did. These people who I've had the privilege to be around are living and fighting for their lives and those of other individuals. (Read full story on www.thewestsidegazette.com)

(for) nine months. He took away a life, for what?” Brown told reporters. “This is all a game and it’s all for show, just taking my family and I through this trial and grand jury and indictment for this cop, Buford, to walk away with probation. This is not justice for my son.” Buford could face up to six

months in jail if convicted. Also, East Cleveland officers Denayne R. Davidson-Dixon and Gerald A. Spencer II were indicted on charges of kidnapping, dereliction of duty and felonious assault, among other charges, for the July 2016 beating of prisoner Jesse R. Nickerson.
