estside continues to consistently advance its building technology each year. One of these improvements for the 2020-2021 school year is the new golf center, which is built to replicate practice on a professional course. It will become the newest way for Westside’s golf team to get their swings in all year round. The addition will be known as the Swede center, named after Westside alum Scott Carlson’s dad, Merrill “Swedeâ€? Carlson. Not only was Merrill Carlson known as a good golfer, he was someone who loved what golf stands for. “I was informed by Terry Hanna of this concept to build the indoor golf practice facility,â€? Scott Carlson said. “Terry offered us the opportunity to name this after my father who grew up in the district, Merrill “Swedeâ€? &DUOVRQ DQG ZH ZHUH Ă€DWWHUHG WKDW WKH GLVWULFW WKH VFKRRO DQG WKH [Westside] Foundation would consider naming the facility after my father, so we graciously accepted.“ The new Swede center has been taking shape over the past year-and-ahalf and will make use of empty space left in the building by the school’s expansion completed in 2000. Westside foundation development director Terry Hanna said that the area was used for various purposes, but nothing worked for the space. Hanna said the idea was brought to the district’s attention from the golf team and their family members. Their goal was to have an indoor practice space to use. According to Hanna, golf is one of the only sports that lacks a dedicated practice space at Westside High School, and the team was determined to change that. 7KH WHDP ZRUNHG WR ÂżQG DQG GHYHORS LGHDV IRU WKH VSDFH QRW RQO\ WR EHQHÂżW WKHPVHOYHV EXW WKH JURZWK RI WKH VSRUW ZLWKLQ WKH FRPPXQLW\ An important factor of the original proposal was completing the project without school funding. Before the idea could get off the ground, a group of patrons would have to be willing to donate to the project. According to Hanna, the community response was promising, as the interest and excitement of the construction was high. According to Hanna, 47 donors agreed to support the project, including alumni, district members, friends of the Westside community and golf program. Hanna said the Swede center would be an undeniable achievement for the school. It will become a unique addition that is unlike anything across the country at a high school level. According to Hanna, Westside was nationally recognized for the recent welding expansion, and with the magnitude of this project, it may be possible to be recognized again. “The golf training center will not only be a valuable tool for our competitive golfers,â€? said Hanna. “It has great potential to be an incredible resource for all of our learners.â€? This project will mark a new era of opportunities for all prospective golf players within the community and will greatly impact the collective Westside golf team. The Westside golf team currently commutes to nearby courses for after school practice, mainly hitting at Westwood and Elmwood and occasionally practicing at Tiburon or Miracle Hills according to senior Portia Lenczowski, a Westside golf team member. She said that this can take time. “We usually start practice [around] 3:30 to 3:45, because it takes everybody [awhile] to get over to where we’re practicing and change before we can begin practicing ,â€? Lenczowski said.

A look from outside the construction of Westside’s new Swede golf center. Westside golf coach Barry Glanzer said that the team members are responsible for helping each other with rides and feels the commute doesn’t hurt them. Both Glanzer and Lenczowski said the new Swede center will give the team the opportunity for year-long practice, as well as preventing canceled practices due to weather conditions. According to Lenczowski, the team will be able to swing anytime throughout the year and won’t have to halt practice when winter weather takes over. According to Hanna, when completed, users can expect the simulation of different courses from around the world, as well as a putting and chipping area to practice on the greens. The center will be equipped with an additional hitting area, making use of a net system. “Short game is something I have been working really hard on right now,â€? Lenczowski said. Editorial Prior Review Hurts Westside Journalism A

t the start of this school year, District 66 administration made the decision to enforce school board policy 5470 and enact mandatory prior review of all studentrun publications. This means that all content produced by students in Westside Journalism must be reviewed by school administration before it is published. This policy has completely compromised the way Westside Journalism operates and is only making it PRUH GLIÂżFXOW IRU VWXGHQWV WR SXEOLVK DQG deterring them from honestly addressing sensitive topics. According to District 66 School Board Interim President Adam Yale, in a statement made through email, the school board holds the journalism department and the work it does in high regard. He said that despite that, the school board has an obligation to protect the District. “We respect Westside Journalism and the quality and rigor of its publications,â€? Yale said via email response. “That said, if/when our publications run something provocative or improper, it is the reputation of the District on the line, and therefore, we feel it is proper to retain the right of prior review.â€? You cannot respect the journalism department if you completely disregard the way that our program operates. Westside Journalism prides itself on being a completely student-run program. Student editors run class and plan what to cover for their publication. They used to have complete control over what and when things are published before this policy. Libby Seline, Westside Class of 2017, is currently studying journalism at University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She was an Editor-inChief of the Lance during her senior year and said that she credits her experiences in journalism at Westside in deciding to go into it for her career. “I really appreciated not being restricted by anything or not having the administration be able to look over what we were doing because with that we ‌ explored topics like [diversity, drugs and mental health],â€? Seline said. “Westside Journalism was the place where I was able to fall in love [with journalism] and eventually grow that into a career.â€? Throughout the history of Westside

journalism, we have won nine sweepstakes state championships, including the last two years, as well as countless individual state FKDPSLRQVKLSV 7KH GLVWULFW UHDSV WKH EHQH¿WV and prestige of our competition wins and yet implements policies that disrespect us. It is understandable that the administration would like to be more cognizant of what is published, especially in the political and social climate we are living in, but they approached this issue in the completely wrong way. If they would have reached out openly to student editors to create a dialogue about topics like Covid-19, the election and the Black Lives Matter movement, which according to Bobby Truhe, a school law attorney that the district consulted, were a part of implementing this policy, we would have been very receptive to that discussion. We happily would’ve given

them a heads up on any story containing controversial matters such as these. Instead, they met with our advisers and informed them of this policy change, leaving them to be the unfair middlemen in what should’ve been a discussion between those who run the publications and those who had an issue with what’s being published. Prior review seems to be a step in the direction of censorship. Why would they want to review all content if they didn’t want to stop any of it from being published? Superintendent Dr. Mike Lucas said, in a statement made through email, that restraint would be extremely rare. “As I look back at the hundreds, if not thousands, of submissions created by our amazing student-run journalism department last year, I can only think of one article

that would have been redirected had our instructors, students, and journalism program been following the policy we’ve had in place since 2006, Lucas said via email response. According to Lucas, it was an article regarding a school program. “The article I am referencing was written late last October or early November and featured a classroom-business partnership that had not been approved and violated another district policy, Lucas said via email response. Whether this would’ve been the only content restrained or not, at the moment, the actual act of prior restraint is not a problem. The problem is that this new system that has been put in place creates a constant fear of our content being restricted from publishing. The prior review policy prevents students from doing their best work based on how they think administration will react. According to Seline, policies like this can cause journalists to not tackle tough topics. “[Journalists are] meant to be the watchdog, Seline said. “You’re meant to bring up issues that are hard to talk about and so if the administration is watching over your every move, you can’t do that and that’s really unfortunate because the students need a voice. Prior review affects all of our publications in a different way. For Westside Wired, and other publications which post their content on the website, it slows down the process of publishing. For publications that print, such as The Lance, it not only slows us down which creates a domino effect of pushing back publishing by several days, but also if something were to be restricted from publishing, we would have to readjust the whole issue. This prior review policy is unfair to members of Westside Student Journalism. We have worked for years successfully as student-run publications and this not only prevents us from doing our best work but is disrespectful towards the work that we do. We implore District 66 Administrators to rethink the implementation of prior review and give full control back to student editors.

staying hands on in a hands off time a look at interactive classes during a pandemic here’s no question that the COVID-19 Pandemic has caused our entire school to drastically change and adapt quickly, but certain classes have had to adjust much more than others. Classes that require more hands-on work, ones that are mainly performance or team-based, and courses that require lots of materials and equipment have all been forced to greatly alter much of their plans for the 2020-2021 school year. A class that has been particularly affected by this pandemic is pottery. Being largely material based, getting supplies to students was one of the biggest concerns at the beginning of the year. According to pottery instructor Amber Tomasek, the art teachers were eventually able WR ¿JXUH RXW D V\VWHP WR JHW supplies to students and make sure that materials were sanitized and safe for use. Tomasek stated that each student enrolled in pottery was given a kit that they could bring to and

from school and a kit that could be left on the table. Accommodating at-home students presented a challenge as well. Tomasek said that the best way for her to get information to at-home students was to record videos with the necessary content, as well as to conduct meetings during class. “[We are] webexing [at the] same time as we’re in class, for demonstrations and presentations and things like that, so they’re getting what their classmates here are getting,â€? said Tomasek. 7KH ÂżQDO VWDJH RI SRWWHU\ UHTXLUHV ODUJH RYHQV specialized for pottery called kilns. For some students enrolled in welding, not only did their method of learning change, but even the class altogether, according to Bombac. “The hard part that we have in this department are our classes that are like welding, woods, that have that handson performance-based piece,â€?

Bombac said. “What we’ve done with those students that have decided to stay online is we’ve removed them out of our regular course because there’s no way they’re going to get that hands-on portion.â€? Another class that involves a huge amount of groupbased work, which was greatly impacted, was band. Adjusting to regulations and keeping students safe is a tedious task, according to band director Thomas Krueger. He now is adapting and working to implement social distancing guidelines into his classroom. Social distancing and de-densifying the classroom has been a top priority for him. In the band room, he tries to maintain a six-foot distance between each student, the distance recommended by the CDC. Taking the different sections of the band in small groups to rehearse has been one of the best solutions for Krueger. He stated that playing an instrument, and a wind or brass instrument at that, can be a dangerous thing to do at this time. Blowing into the mouthpiece of an instrument can release aerosols into the air, which is the main thing that masks are trying to prevent. The implementation of the school-wide mask mandate was another question for the band, because of the way that the instruments are played. “Our masks that we have for band have a slit in them so that they can pull apart and open up so that you can insert a mouthpiece and then the mask condenses down on the mouthpiece, so it makes it so all the kids are still able to play their instruments with a mask on,â€? Krueger said. “We also have bell covers for most instruments, as well, where it’s basically a mask for their instrument to help prevent any aerosols from coming out of their instrument as well. â€? According to Krueger, the greatest challenge was WKDW WKH FODVV E\ GHÂżQLWLRQ LV VXFK D SHUIRUPDQFH based class, and they were unable to practice altogether. The main focus of band is to perform as a group, and with some students being at home, and others being at school, that was a big problem. “It’s impossible to get that same type of feeling that we have as a group and as a team to perform,â€? Krueger said.

learning with covid ince the spring of 2020, the Westside District has had to change its normal procedures to accommodate the recommendations of the CDC during the COVID-19 outbreak. Westside Middle School has taken precautions such as wearing masks, separating students during lunch, and two separate passing periods. According to WMS Principal, Kimberly Eymann, these restrictions have affected both the students and staff. “ [The restrictions] have been going really well and the kids have been awesome,â€? Eymann said. “Going into this, I thought the biggest challenge was going to be the face mask, but it hasn’t been.â€? According to Eymann, she was worried about how the students would handle the new restrictions. But, students are adapting well to these new challenges. “We took it really slow,â€? Eymann said. “It kind of allowed for students his teaching experience through COVID-19 with a line from the show. and staff to get adjusted and kind of iron out any kinks we needed to iron out.â€? “My teaching time through COVID-19 can easily be interpreted by the wise intellect Claire Veylupek is an eighth-grader who goes to WMS. Veylupek said. Not only have students of Westside been affected by the new restrictions, but their parents have as well. Meyerson said. “It was hard for her to be on a screen all day.â€? Sixth-grade instructor Jason Campbell said the masks have been a struggle for his students, and he found that his students have been acting differently with them. The kids who tend to be quieter are even more so with masks. Along with masks, Campbell expressed that the students can’t work as easily in groups and each table has plexiglass to separate the students. “[The restrictions] almost takes the fun out of everything because you can’t be your normal self,â€? Campbell said. Campbell said he’s been having to plan way more ahead and now shares his lesson plans with parents and online students.
