Local residents take part in the March For Our Lives on March 24
Above, Churchville students and their families carried signs at the March For Our Lives on Saturday, March 24 in downtown Rochester. Churchville-Chili student AnnaSerra Weider said she wanted to “support the kids that want to save every caring kid and grown up.” Abbie Stair shared that she wanted “to show a younger audience that they can protest what they believe.” Caitie Stair (left) chose to participate to “support getting gun laws settled, and ban assault weapons.” She registered to vote while at the march. Sarah Dumrese (bottom left), teacher at Gates Chili Paul Road Elementary School with son Isaac Dumrese. Photos by Karen Fien.
The Lansing family from Brockport came out to show their support during the March For Our Lives in Rochester. Brockport student Samantha Lansing said, “Something has to change and we need to come together and constructively work towards a solution.” Photo by Karen Fien.
At right, College at Brockport journalism professors Kim Young, Marsha Ducey and Carvin Eison traveled more than 400 miles with 11 students on March 23, giving students the chance to use what they’ve learned in the classroom to cover the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C. the following day. Students captured photos and videos of, and conducted interviews with, marchers from all over the country who participated in the march to speak out against the issue of gun violence. Pictured are just a few who came from Brockport. From left to right are Carvin Eison, student Mark Cuminale, Kim Young, student Alexandra Weaver, Ducey’s daughter, Audrey, Marsha Ducey herself, and student Chelsea Nelson. Photo by Tori Martinez

PLANTATION PARTY HOUSE SPENCERPORT, NEW YORK
You’re welcome.
USAF Concert Band and Singing Sergeants offer free concert Churchville-Chili grad Ashley Harrington Keeks among performers The United States Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants will perform a free concert on Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. The concert is part of their 10-day Spring Tour largely throughout New York State. The U.S. Air Force Band uses the power of music to inspire audiences worldwide, create innovative products and programs, and represent Air Force excellence. This excellence is showcased in the technical prowess and virtuosity required to perform this tour’s musical repertoire. Selections range from classic wind band pieces such as William Schuman’s “Chester” to “A Night at the Opera” featuring the Singing Sergeants in crowd-pleasing arias. The concert will also include exciting modern works like John Mackey’s “Antique Violences,” which will feature principal trumpet Technical Sgt. Micah Killion, who is pleased to serve as tour soloist. “Preparing ‘Antique Violences’ has been an exciting challenge,” says Killion. “Although the solo requires me to play four different trumpets through demanding passages, the real difficulty is in being properly focused to make it through the piece night after night on a tour, making each show feel new and exciting. With such amazing colleagues making music with me, I’m thrilled to take the stage.” One of the advantages of touring is the occasional opportunity to perform in the hometown of one of the Airmen musicians. Sharing their military service in these community relations concerts is a meaningful way to give back to the places they’re from. Soprano vocalist Technical Sgt. Ashley Keeks is from Churchville, attended Churchville-Chili High School and studied at the Eastman Community Music School from 2000 to 2006. “It’s an honor to share our mission as military musicians with the community,” said Keeks. “What better place to do that than my hometown, performing on the beautiful Eastman Theatre stage.” Having the opportunity to perform at renowned musical institutions during national tours is a delight for the Airmen. This visit will serve as a homecoming of sorts for several members. Technical Sgt. Blakely Carroll-Rosengaft, a trumpeter in the Concert Band, attended Eastman from 2004 to 2006 for her Master of Music degree.
Sgt. Ashley Harrington Keeks. Provided photo. “I am very excited to return to the Eastman School of Music as a member of the Air Force Band,” shared Carroll-Rosengaft. “It is a wonderful institution, and I have so much gratitude for my teachers who played a key role in helping me become the musician I am today.” Other Eastman alumni in the Concert Band include percussionist Master Sgt. Adam Green (1994 to 1998), and clarinetists Technical Sgt. Brian Wahrlich (2002 to 2008) and Technical Sgt. Jeremy Klenke (2005 to 2007). The performance at Kodak Hall will be unique, featuring collaborations with Eastman faculty members. Mark Davis Scatterday, Professor of Conducting and Ensembles at Eastman, will conduct the Concert Band in a performance of his work “La Salsa.” Following Scatterday, internationally-acclaimed percussionist and Eastman professor Michael Burritt, will rejoin the Concert Band after his recent performance in their Washington, D.C.-based Guest Artist Series. Burritt will perform the newly premiered “Pseudovector for Percussion and Wind Ensemble” by Eastman Assistant Professor of Music Theory Matthew Curlee. Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre is located at 433 East Main Street, Rochester. For free tickets call 585-274-3000 or go to eastmantheater.org. There are no reserved seats; first-come, first seated. Riga Recreation’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt On Saturday, March 24, the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The sun was shining and the snow had melted, so egg hunters from 1 to 10 years of age went onto the grass and into two huge straw piles to hunt for over 2,000 eggs and “Special Eggs.” When the hunting was finished, the following boys and girls found the “special” eggs. One to five years: Gold Egg - Lily Bridenbaugh, Silver Egg - Laelynn Parsons, Bronze Egg - Erika Saunders, Jelly Bean guess (795 Jelly Beans) - Owen Baxter and Daniel Tyshkav. Six to 10 years: Gold Egg - Jordan Larson, Silver Egg - Joe Flanigan, Bronze Egg - Ellison Baxter. The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, facepainting, airbrush tattoos, and caricatures. Thanks go out to the following organizations and individuals that made this event possible: Kohlman Farms, Marty Molinari and his members of the Churchville “LEO” Club, the Riga Highway Department, “Face Painter” Adrianna Wellin, Kathy and Cindy from Arlene’s Costumes and Airbrushing, “Sam the Caricaturist” and of course, the hunters and their parents. Gates to Recovery is heading to Hamlin The successful addiction and support services drop-in center, Gates to Recovery, will be opening another satellite center on the westside of Monroe County. “With over 90 people being placed into treatment and over 125 families getting support services, we felt we had no choice but to look for more options to reach more people needing treatment and more families needing support,” Recovery Now NY’s Outreach Director Ashley Gnau said. Beginning Tuesday, April 3 and every first Tuesday of the month, Gates to Recovery Hamlin will be in operation at the The Lion Charlie Maier Lodge, at 2806 Roosevelt Highway from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Anke Applebaum, Hamlin’s recreation director, said, “We are committed to the health and wellbeing of our
community and the opioid crisis that has reached us. We need to be proactive in confronting these addictions and are pleased to partner with Recovery Now NY to provide addiction support services for residents of Hamlin.” The Gates to Recovery program has proven effective in other towns. Gates to Recovery Hamlin will include a drop-in center to provide fast access to treatment for those suffering from addiction, as well as monthly Narcan training sessions for the community. “To be able to bring our services to the residents west of Rochester and surrounding areas will result in more people, more families, getting the support and services they need, which ultimately will end up with more lives being saved and less families being ripped apart,” Executive Director David Attridge said.
Swing into Spring at the Community Free Library Annual Wine Tasting and Farmers’ Market It has been a long, cold winter, and we are all ready for spring. The annual Wine Tasting and Farmers’ Market Gala at the Community Free Library, 86 Public Square, in Holley is just the place to swing into spring. The seventh annual event takes place on Friday, April 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. Spring is the theme and reading is the goal as tickets go on sale Monday, April 2 in the library and from Board of Trustee members. While listening to Swing Music, attendees will be able to sample wines from area vineyards, shop with local farmers and entrepreneurs and have fun with friends. In addition to the opportunity to win the huge basket on display in the library starting April 2, attendees can participate in a 50/50 drawing, take pictures at a themed selfie station, and hope to win some of the other wonderful door prizes. This sell-out event, held annually on the last Friday in April, provides funding for the library’s summer reading program for both children and teens. Because of the success of previous wine tasting events, the library has been able to double the number of programs offered to children throughout the summer from six to twelve, with special programs being planned to attract area teens. The theme for this year’s summer reading program is “Libraries Rock.” The 2018 event welcomes a new stop on the Niagara Wine Trail - The Winery at Marjim Manor, from Appleton, New York. You will be able to taste their fruit and grape wines and hear about their haunted manor. Returning are favorites: Black Willow Winery & Valhalla Meadery (Burt), Schulze Winery (Burt), and A Gust of Sun Winery (Ransomville/ Spencerport). All four of this year’s wineries have won awards at State or National competitions. As a Farmers’ Market, this event will provide attendees with the opportunity to visit with Penna Farms (Holley) and Kirby’s Farm Market (Brockport) and find out about this year’s plans, purchase hanging baskets and bedding plants, jams, jellies and other products.
The event also provides a showcase for local entrepreneurs. This year Kenne’s Cakes and Confections (Brockport) will provide samples of their sweet treats while Tripleberry Farm (Kendall) will bring their locally made jams and jellies and goat-milk soap. In addition to the items provided by the vendors, the library will have a cookbook of favorite appetizers from previous events on sale for only $5. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, there is sure to be a great gift for that special someone. This highly anticipated evening has something for everyone, promoting local businesses and the Niagara and Ontario Wine Trails, as well as highlighting community support for children’s reading. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door and can be purchased at the Community Free Library, 86 Public Square, Holley, starting April 2. Be sure to get yours before they run out. For more information, look for the library website (www.holleylibrary. org) or Facebook page (www.facebook.comholleylibrary). For questions, contact Sandra Shaw, Library Director, at 585-638-6987. A Blue Devil Tribute: A Celebration of the Life of Mr. Neil R. Hartwick Neil R. Hartwick was the former band director at Batavia High School and Brockport High School, and alumni of SUNY Fredonia. He touched the lives of a countless number of students and families. His gift for inspiring the love of music in others was magical, but his love for his students was the reason he made such a difference in their lives. So many were saddened to hear of his passing in September. Looking for ways to honor the man who had meant so much to them, the alumni and families of Batavia and Brockport have worked together to plan a tribute to Mr. Hartwick, as well as show their love and support for his wife,
Nancy Hartwick. Coincidentally, the mascot for all three of these institutions is the Blue Devil, so it seemed only fitting that it be A Blue Devil Tribute. This celebration of Mr. Hartwick’s life will take place in the Brockport High School Auditorium on Sunday, May 27 at 2:30 p.m. with a reception to follow. Mr. Hartwick touched the lives of so many. We invite you to share your memories and photos by sending them to remember_neil@netacc.net. These will be compiled in a memory book, and the photos will also be used in a slideshow at the celebration. A Memorial Concert to honor Mr. Hart-
wick will be performed by the Batavia Concert Band on Wednesday, August 1 at 7 p.m. in Centennial Park, Batavia. Alumni and friends from both Batavia and Brockport are invited to participate in the concert. More information and a sign-up sheet will be available on May 27 or by calling Peter Mark at 547-2372. Mrs. Hartwick has designated the Batavia Concert Band as recipient for any

In addition to the new agreement, the Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic is announcing a new charitable beneficiary, the Pluta Cancer Center Foundation. “We are thrilled to extend a four-decade tradition of professional women’s golf in Rochester with the continuation of the Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic,” said tournament co-chairman Mike Vadala. “The Pluta Cancer Center Foundation also represents the best of the area’s talents, and we are proud to support the exciting, innovative solutions they bring to patients and their families battling cancer.” The fourth annual Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic will be held July 16 through 22 at Brook-Lea Country Club, which was the home course of tournament

Celebration Forest celebrates fundraising The Village of Brockport Tree Board and Celebration Forest Adventures are “fun raising” to increase greater tree planting in our region. Invitations to “reside” in Celebration Forest include local residents, civic organizations and businesses with heartwarming results. Author, advocate and founder of Celebration Forest Lori Short Staubitz says, “I am so encouraged by so many who are willing to respond to the immediate and necessary task of reforestation right here in the community. When we think of health and wholeness for all residents, we certainly consider health care, access to jobs and nutrition. We don’t often consider that each life is totally dependent upon the ability to breathe in clean air. Each child that is born needs at least seven old growth trees to sustain their first breath to their last. Celebration Forest connects whole communities in support of this important, multi-generational relationship we have with trees.” Most people imagine a forest as “out there,” but Celebration Forest is being planted right where we live, work, play and breathe. Anyone can reside in Celebration Forest by simply supporting the planting of trees. Through donations or direct planting, individuals, families or co-workers can “live” in Celebration Forest. This concept is intended to support the efforts
that are already established to reforest municipalities. Each organization, town, village, city or state set the standards for the levels of giving and manage all funds. “The expectation for this project is that all donations are used for tree planting. Together we are making this virtual forest become a reality,” Staubitz says. “The care and concern is evident and reinforces the power we have to make good things happen.” Upcoming 2018 Celebration ForestBrockport fundraising events: “Little Nut” book signing and Growing Celebration Forest with Founder & Author Lori Short Staubitz; Saturday, April 21; Lift Bridge Bookstore 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beyond Yoga-Earth Day Kirtan & Meditation on Saturday, April 21 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Celebrating Mother Earth with music on the harmonium and Tree of Life meditation; 88 Main Street, Brockport. A well-written life by Maggie Fitzgibbon When Stu Krieger was a young boy, he knew that he wanted to be in the movie business. “My mom would tell the story of how I would take a photo out of the family photo album and write on the back, ‘Look, I’m the cute redhead in this photo, you should put me in your movies,’ and then I would ask her to send this to Walt Disney,” Krieger said with a laugh. “Oddly enough, I never heard back from Walt.” A family trip to California convinced Krieger that when he grew up he was going to move to that sunny state and venture into the entertainment industry. Krieger grew up in the eastside of Rochester where he attended Brighton Central Schools. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1969, and The College at Brockport in 1973. After college graduation, he packed up his car and moved to California. “I had a single focus from a very early age that I wanted to pursue this profession,” Krieger said. Upon arrival in California, Krieger knew he had to support himself. He sent applications to any business that was in any way related to the industry. He took a job as a copyboy for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner newspaper. “The job of a copyboy was to run errands for every newspaper department. But whenever I had time, I would hang around reporters who worked for the entertainment section to pick their brains and get their advice,” Krieger said. “The two best pieces of advice I got was this: to write all the time and to look for an agent.” This began Krieger’s quest to become a writer. He sent manuscripts and
samples, and after almost two years, he found an agent. The next several years brought new opportunities. He was signed by a producer to write a script for a movie called Goodbye Franklin High. This job led to work as a production assistant on another film where he met an actress who became his wife of over 37 years. Through his new wife, he met the renowned producer Garry Marshall. He co-wrote a script with Marshall that opened many doors for Krieger. “Working on that project with Garry got me a lot of attention which led to other breaks in the business. People started to take note of my work,” Krieger said. “The producers of the TV series called Amazing Stories, which included Steven Spielberg, read some of my work and asked me to write an episode for the show,” Krieger said. “That led to me working as a story editor for this series.” One of the biggest breaks in his career came when he was approached about collaborating with two of the most influential men in the film industry. “Spielberg contacted me about writing a script for an animated dinosaur film that he was set to produce with George Lucas. When Spielberg and Lucas ask if you want to write a movie for them, of course, you say yes. And so became the film “The Land Before Time,” Krieger said. “That was a life long gift that premiered in 1998. The movie is still in sequel, and it also spun into a cartoon series.” This film led to work with the Disney Channel writing scripts for the movie of the month. He wrote 10 of the 50 best movies. While Krieger can certainly claim many successes in this film industry, his true reward came in the last 11 years when he became full-time professor of film and TV writing at the University of California at Riverside. This career change has led him to help
Stu Krieger. Provided photo. mold future writers and producers. “This move to academia was a pivotal change in my life. My 90-year-old mentor is the person I can credit for this change and motivation. He was the head of the department at the university and wanted to add a film and TV writing class,” Krieger said. “I teach my students the artistry of writing and to write from the heart and write what you know. We talk about reliability, integrity and work ethic. It’s tough to find work in this business, so you need to prove yourself. ” Like any writer, spending time honing the craft is part of fulfilling one’s creative self. Although he is a full-time professor, Krieger continues to write and has recently penned his first novel called, That One Cigarette. Krieger describes it as a counter factual history tale that follows four families who live in different locations from 1963 to 2009. The story begins with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and shows how this event impacted four families. One of the families depicted in the book lives in Rochester. The book includes many references to the area including Wegmans and the now closed Don and Bob’s Restaurant
that was located on Monroe Avenue in Brighton. Krieger describes the book as the story of life changes. “The genesis of the book began when three former students came to me seeking advice. Each one was turning 30 years old and felt they hadn’t made any significant achievements in their lives. They wanted to know what to do and I advised them to reconcile themselves and chart a course of change,” he said. Krieger has a long list of accomplishments including an Emmy Award for the mini-series A Year in the Life, a Lifetime Achievement Award in Screenwriting at the Riverside International Film Festival, and an honorary doctorate from The College at Brockport. While this list is full of accolades, Krieger is humble. “I grew up in a close family with parents who grounded me. Where and how I grew up were important influences. I think the book gives a sense of hope, change and optimism,” Krieger said. That One Cigarette can be ordered from Lift Bridge Book Shop, 45 Main Street, Brockport, 637-2260.

Churchville-Chili students share knowledge and a love for wildlife Students in Churchville-Chili High School’s Wildlife Ecology class have been hard at work, studying animals, their behavior and their habitats, and then assessing existing books on those subjects. Their aim was to design engaging books for children that would communicate everything they had learned. Meanwhile, Fairbanks Road Elementary School second-graders have also been researching animal classification and how animals interact with their environments. They did in-depth research on seals, polar bears and other arctic wildlife that resulted in spectacular hall displays and digital presentations.
The two studies intersected on March 16 when the upperclassmen made a special visit to FRS to work with the younger students. Older students had researched and created short monographs tailored to children on a wide variety of animal subjects: from wolves and vipers to dolphins and sea turtles. Each author was paired with a second-grader who was eager to learn about the animal and interact with an older role model. “The younger children really look up to our high school students,” said FRS teacher Kaitlin Krahmer. “They respect the older kids and enjoy learning new things from them. Our older students are fabulous teachers and their enthusiasm is catching.
Students, young and old, bonded over a shared love for wildlife and a passion for learning.
Visiting Churchville-Chili High School students prepared for one-on-one interactions with FRS second-graders.
The students read an original book together featuring a specific animal and then discussed it, making a new friend along the way.
It is really lovely to see the relationships that are developing here as they all share what they know.” After the custom book was read and discussed, each second-grader had the chance to share their own class wildlife research with their new friend. “My students have been impressed by
how much the younger students know about forming hypotheses, gathering and analyzing information and organizing their results into presentations,” said High School teacher Paula Mir. “This is a great way for both age groups to benefit, academically and socially.” Provided information and photos
Morgan-Manning celebrates an historic birthday and a present-day volunteer by Doug Hickerson About 50 members of the Western Monroe Historical Society and their guests attended “Sara Manning’s Birthday Party” at the Morgan-Manning House on March 18. It was the 150th birthday celebration for Mrs. Manning, the last occupant of the historic home which bears her family’s name. The party concluded with honored guest, Alicia Fink, unveiling a reproduction of an original oil painting of Susan Morgan (Sara’s mother). The portrait will hang in the first-floor hallway to be included in tours of the home. The original oil painting was found deteriorated in the home’s attic.
Don Voorheis and Gordy Fox, respectively president and vice president of the Society, paid tribute to volunteer Alicia Fink for her many years of dedicated service to the Society and to the historic home. They praised her fund-raising skills, organizational abilities (including four years as Society board president), and countless hours of work on the many details involved in running a non-profit organization. Also, citing Ms. Fink’s decades of support for the school she adopted in the mountains of her native Ecuador, she was presented with a $1,000 contribution to the school. The gift came from donations by individual members of the Society’s board of trustees.
Brockport Rotary President Eileen Whitney and President Elect Linda Menear welcome current Greece Rotary President Chuck Gannon to Brockport. His visit had two purposes. The first was to introduce himself as the 2018-19 assistant district governor for Area 9, which includes Greece, Gates-Chili, Hilton and Spencerport clubs, as well as Brockport. He will assume his duties July 1. The second was to discuss and promote some of the activities the Westside clubs are working on together. The most important is a “Meet and Greet” at Ridgemont Country Club, Greece on April 19, from 7 to 8:45 p.m. (including appetizers). Don Alhart, former district 7120 governor and legendary news anchor for TV Channel 13, will emcee the meeting. Included will be opportunities for potential members or persons just interested in finding out more about Rotary’s westside clubs and informally meet club members. Provided information.

And, I am grateful to Carl Gouveia and Seymour Library for placing my articles on perpetual display for the community to enjoy.” Doug and his wife, Dianne, have lived in Sweden Village for over 30 years. Full concession service returns to Sweden Town Park After a one-year absence, full concession stand service is back at the Sweden Town Park. Baseball families and other park visitors will be able to feed the kids a hot dog for dinner or a snack to tide them over, and get everyone in the family a cold drink (or a hot beverage for the chilly early season days).
Construction began this week on new restrooms adjacent to the baseball concession stand and the restrooms should be complete before the season is over. The site will be fenced to keep everyone safe; however, parents should be vigilant so that curious kids don’t try to enter the construction area.

It's always a challenge to become familiar with your new neighborhood when you relocate? Ask your real estate agent to take you around the neighborhood, showing you the most convenient route to take to work, the location of the nearest grocery store, gas station, pharmacy, mall, movie theatre, park and the school your children will be attending. When your family arrives, you will be able to take them on a guided tour and point out the local landmarks, thus helping to reduce relocation anxiety. You can usually find information about the community through the Chamber of Commerce. Many towns offer publications that list emergency telephone numbers for the local fire department, hospitals and police station, advertisements featuring popular local restaurants and places of interest, historical data about the community and the names and contact information for local clubs and organizations. With a little research and help from your realtor, you will feel comfortable in your new community.
