At right, College at Brockport journalism professors Kim Young, Marsha Ducey and Carvin Eison traveled more than 400 miles with 11 students on March 23, giving students the chance to use what they’ve learned in the classroom to cover the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C. the following day. Students captured photos and videos of, and conducted interviews with, marchers from all over the country who participated in the march to speak out against the issue of gun violence. Pictured are just a few who came from Brockport. A portrait of Susan Morgan was unveiled by Alicia Fink at the Morgan-Manning House on March 18. The event was the 150th birthday celebration for Sara Manning, Susan Morgan’s daughter. Gordy Fox, vice president of the Western Monroe Historical Society, presided. In the background are portraits of Phebe and Hiel Brockway, founders of the Village of Brockport. Photography by Gregory Lawrence. Used with permission.

Morgan-Manning celebrates an historic birthday and a present-day volunteer by Doug Hickerson About 50 members of the Western Monroe Historical Society and their guests attended “Sara Manning’s Birthday Party” at the Morgan-Manning House on March 18. It was the 150th birthday celebration for Mrs. Manning, the last occupant of the historic home which bears her family’s name. The party concluded with honored guest, Alicia Fink, unveiling a reproduction of an original oil painting of Susan Morgan (Sara’s mother). The portrait will hang in the first-floor hallway to be included in tours of the home. The original oil painting was found deteriorated in the home’s attic.

Don Voorheis and Gordy Fox, respectively president and vice president of the Society, paid tribute to volunteer Alicia Fink for her many years of dedicated service to the Society and to the historic home. They praised her fund-raising skills, organizational abilities (including four years as Society board president), and countless hours of work on the many details involved in running a non-profit organization. Also, citing Ms. Fink’s decades of support for the school she adopted in the mountains of her native Ecuador, she was presented with a $1,000 contribution to the school. The gift came from donations by individual members of the Society’s board of trustees.

Tickets on sale for Brockport HS spring play “Silk and Cinders” Tickets are on sale now for the Brockport High School original production of “Silk and Cinders: A Cinderella Story.” Performances will be held in the Brockport High School auditorium April 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. “Silk and Cinders: A Cinderella Story” is a brand new musical for the whole family. It is a fun and funny mash up of the classic stories “Cinderella” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” “Silk and Cinders” was written by Julie and Dan Izzo (Brockport High School English teacher) with music by Kelly Izzo Shapiro (2008 graduate of Brockport High School). In the story, a vain and foolish king rules the kingdom where Cinderella endures the abuse of her stepmother and stepsisters. The king’s son, Prince Harry, detests his father’s selfishness and greed. He wants to help the people who are struggling under his

father’s oppressive rule but does not know how. The prince and Cinderella join to help each other, but things are not always what they seem and their happy ever after will surprise. “Silk and Cinders” was written to showcase the many multitalented students involved in the production. More than 50 students and staff from the high school came together to create the theatrical experience. This venture is the second original musical by the Izzo family. “Alice Unraveled” premiered at Brockport High School in 2010. It was later accepted and performed at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and critically acclaimed. Tickets are $5 and on sale at the high school greeter’s desk, online at showtix4u. com or at the door on the day of the show. Provided information

Here, Ava Wagoner is congratulated by Ken Gropp. Grace Huhn, Service; Colby Leggo, Scholarship; and Corden Zimmerman ended with Citizenship. NJHS President Sarah Sue Streeter spoke about working hard for everything you want. She shared her story of not qualifying for membership in the society when she expected that she would. She was extremely disappointed, and determined to do better the next year. “I worked and worked and worked,” she said. “And all the hard work paid off. When you really want something, you have to be willing to work hard to get it.” The induction ceremony featured two guest speakers who were chosen by NJHS members: Byron-Bergen teachers Roxanne Wood and Peter Spence. They each spoke about the five qualities NJHS members must embody and how they are part of a successful life. Wood challenged students to “set your goals higher than you think you can reach.” As part of the induction ceremony, each new inductee received a certificate and pin, and the distinct honor to be a part of the National Junior Honor Society. Over a million students participate in NJHS: https://www.njhs. us/. Membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. The Village of Brockport Tree Board and Celebration Forest Adventures are “fun raising” to increase greater tree planting in our region. Invitations to “reside” in Celebration Forest include local residents, civic organizations and businesses with heartwarming results. Author, advocate and founder of Celebration Forest Lori Short Staubitz says, “I am so encouraged by so many who are willing to respond to the immediate and necessary task of reforestation right here in the community. When we think of health and wholeness for all residents, we certainly consider health care, access to jobs and nutrition. We don’t often consider that each life is totally dependent upon the ability to breathe in clean air. Each child that is born needs at least seven old growth trees to sustain their first breath to their last. Celebration Forest connects whole communities in support of this important, multi-generational relationship we have with trees.” Most people imagine a forest as “out there,” but Celebration Forest is being planted right where we live, work, play and breathe. Anyone can reside in Celebration Forest by simply supporting the planting of trees. Through donations or direct planting, individuals, families or co-workers can “live” in Celebration Forest. This concept is intended to support the efforts that are already established to reforest municipalities.

Each organization, town, village, city or state set the standards for the levels of giving and manage all funds. “The expectation for this project is that all donations are used for tree planting. Together we are making this virtual forest become a reality,” Staubitz says. “The care and concern is evident and reinforces the power we have to make good things happen.”

Swing into Spring at the Community Free Library Annual Wine Tasting and Farmers’ Market It has been a long, cold winter, and we are all ready for spring. The annual Wine Tasting and Farmers’ Market Gala at the Community Free Library, 86 Public Square, in Holley is just the place to swing into spring. The seventh annual event takes place on Friday, April 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. Spring is the theme and reading is the goal as tickets go on sale Monday, April 2 in the library and from Board of Trustee members. While listening to Swing Music, attendees will be able to sample wines from area vineyards, shop with local farmers and entrepreneurs and have fun with friends. In addition to the opportunity to win the huge basket on display in the library starting April 2, attendees can participate in a 50/50 drawing, take pictures at a themed selfie station, and hope to win some of the other wonderful door prizes. This sell-out event, held annually on the last Friday in April, provides funding for the library’s summer reading program for both children and teens. Because of the success of previous wine tasting events, the library has been able to double the number of programs offered to children throughout the summer from six to twelve, with special programs being planned to attract area teens. The theme for this year’s summer reading program is “Libraries Rock.” The 2018 event welcomes a new stop on the Niagara Wine Trail - The Winery at Marjim Manor, from Appleton, New York. You will be able to taste their fruit and grape wines and hear about their haunted manor. Returning are favorites: Black Willow Winery & Valhalla Meadery (Burt), Schulze Winery (Burt), and A Gust of Sun Winery

(Ransomville/ Spencerport). All four of this year’s wineries have won awards at State or National competitions. As a Farmers’ Market, this event will provide attendees with the opportunity to visit with Penna Farms (Holley) and Kirby’s Farm Market (Brockport) and find out about this year’s plans, purchase hanging baskets and bedding plants, jams, jellies and other products. The event also provides a showcase for local entrepreneurs. This year Kenne’s Cakes and Confections (Brockport) will provide samples of their sweet treats while Tripleberry Farm (Kendall) will bring their locally made jams and jellies and goat-milk soap. In addition to the items provided by the vendors, the library will have a cookbook of favorite appetizers from previous events on sale for only $5. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, there is sure to be a great gift for that special someone. This highly anticipated evening has something for everyone, promoting local businesses and the Niagara and Ontario Wine Trails, as well as highlighting community support for children’s reading. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door and can be purchased at the Community Free Library, 86 Public Square, Holley, starting April 2. Be sure to get yours before they run out. For more information, look for the library website (www.holleylibrary. org) or Facebook page (www.facebook.comholleylibrary). For questions, contact Sandra Shaw, Library Director, at 585-638-6987. USAF Concert Band and Singing Sergeants in concert Churchville-Chili grad Ashley Harrington Keeks among performers The United States Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants will perform a free concert on Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. The concert is part of their 10-day Spring Tour largely throughout New York State. The U.S. Air Force Band uses the power of music to inspire audiences worldwide, create innovative products and programs, and represent Air Force excellence. This excellence is showcased in the technical prowess and virtuosity required to perform this tour’s musical repertoire. Selections range from classic wind band pieces such as William Schuman’s “Chester” to “A Night at the Opera” featuring the Singing Sergeants in crowd-pleasing arias. The concert will also include exciting modern works like John Mackey’s “Antique Violences,” which will feature principal trumpet Technical Sgt. Micah Killion, who is pleased to serve as tour soloist. “Preparing ‘Antique Violences’ has been an exciting challenge,” says Killion. “Although the solo requires me to play four different trumpets through demanding passages, the real difficulty is in being properly focused to make it through the piece night after night on a tour, making each show feel new and exciting. With such amazing colleagues making music with me, I’m thrilled to take the stage.” One of the advantages of touring is the occasional opportunity to perform in the hometown of one of the Airmen musicians. Sharing their military service in these community relations concerts is a meaningful way to give back to the places they’re from. Soprano vocalist Technical Sgt. Ashley Keeks is from Churchville, attended ChurchvilleChili High School and studied at the Eastman Community Music School from 2000 to 2006. “It’s an honor to share our mission as military musicians with the community,” said Keeks. “What better place to do that than my hometown, performing on the beautiful Eastman Theatre stage.” Having the opportunity to perform at renowned musical institutions during national tours is a delight for the Airmen. This visit will serve as a homecoming of sorts for several members. Technical Sgt. Blakely Carroll-Rosengaft, a trumpeter in the Concert Band, attended Eastman from 2004 to 2006 for her Master of Music degree. “I am very excited to return to the Eastman School of Music as a member of the Air Force Band,” shared Carroll-Rosengaft. “It is a wonderful institution, and I have so much gratitude for my teachers who played a key role in helping me become the musician I am today.” Other Eastman alumni in the Concert Band include percussionist Master Sgt. Adam Green (1994 to 1998), and clarinetists Technical Sgt. Brian Wahrlich (2002 to 2008) and Technical Sgt. Jeremy Klenke (2005 to 2007).

The performance at Kodak Hall will be unique, featuring collaborations with Eastman faculty members. Mark Davis Scatterday, Professor of Conducting and Ensembles at Eastman, will conduct the Concert Band in a performance of his work “La Salsa.” Following Scatterday, internationally-acclaimed percussionist and Eastman professor Michael Burritt, will rejoin the Concert Band after his recent performance in their Washington, D.C.- Sgt. Ashley Harrington Keeks. based Guest Artist Series. Provided photo. Burritt will perform the newly premiered “Pseudovector for Percussion and Wind Ensemble” by Eastman Assistant Professor of Music Theory Matthew Curlee. Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre is located at 433 East Main Street, Rochester. For free tickets call 585-274-3000 or go to eastmantheater.org. There are no reserved seats; first-come, first seated. “Brockport Stories” now on permanent display at Seymour Library In Seymour Library’s Local History Room, four opened portfolios present 26 years of newspaper clippings about Brockport area people and places. The nearly-200 human interest features in the Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, dating back to 1992, are the work of local writer Doug Hickerson. He recently donated the collection to the library, after several years of loaning it for three months at a time. It is on permanent display on top of bookshelves containing books and documents on Brockport’s history. Clippings of his most recent articles will be added as they are published. “The Seymour Library is very grateful for Mr. Hickerson’s generous donation of articles chronicling life in our beautiful community,” said Carl Gouveia, Library Director. Hickerson’s training and background are not in journalism, but in higher education

administration. With a Doctor of Education degree from Penn State University, he has served in dean of students positions for over two decades in liberal arts colleges. His last position was assistant vice president for student affairs at The College at Brockport, retiring in 1987. “As a pastime in retirement, exploring my community and writing about the people has been very gratifying,” Hickerson said. “I am grateful to publisher Keith Ryan at Westside News, Inc., for accepting my articles for over a quarter of a century. And, I am grateful to Carl Gouveia and Seymour Library for placing my articles on perpetual display for the community to enjoy.” Doug and his wife, Dianne, have lived in Sweden Village for over 30 years. She is an artist and retired from teaching elementary school in the Brockport Central School District. Provided information

Byron-Bergen CSD earns 2018 School Safety Excellence Award The Byron-Bergen Central School District is one of 152 school districts and Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York State to receive the Utica National lnsurance Group’s School Safety Excellence Award for 2018. On March 22, District Superintendent Mickey Edwards, Jr./Sr. High School Principal Patrick McGee, and Elementary School Principal Brian Meister accepted the top “Titanium with Honors” level award, as well as a $500 prize, to be used to further safety efforts. “Our district has continued to take action in making our school safe and secure,” Edwards said. “We were one of the first in our area to bring in a school resource officer. Over the past few years, he has become an integral part of our schools and our culture, forming personal connections and relationships at all grade levels. Our character education program and anti-bullying activities are making measurable impacts on a daily basis. We also continue to use and improve security measures like the New York State Sheriff ’s Association (NYSSA) Rapid Responder Program, an all-hazards, site-based crisis management system; our security camera system that oversees buildings and grounds; and our comprehensive visitor management system.”

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the tentative budget for the Village of Holley, New York for the fiscal year 2018-2019 is on file in the Office of the Village Clerk,72 Public Square, Holley, New York, where same will remain open for public inspection until April 10, 2018 at 7:00 pm when a Public Hearing will be held to consider such budget before the final adoption.

“Providing a safe and secure learning environment for our students, teachers, staff and visitors is our first priority,” he said. “We are honored to receive this recognition.” The School Safety Excellence Award Program has three levels - titanium, platinum and gold - and annual awards are given based on quantifiable measurements of excellence in categories that include bullying prevention programs, playground safety and other areas. Utica National has kept children and school staff safe for over 40 years, and currently insures more than 300 school districts in upstate New York alone. “Safety and health concerns continue to be a priority in our school districts,” said Brian Saville, resident senior vice president in Utica National’s Educational Institutions Unit. “Districts that go above and beyond to provide a safe, healthy and focused culture for learning are to be applauded, and we’re pleased to count Byron-Bergen Central School District among them.” Saville noted that, beyond the recognition itself, an added benefit of following the safety program is the chance to pinpoint specific threats to safety. “The time to address those threats is before a loss happens, which really helps contribute to the safety culture that districts are working toward.” Provided information

A well-written life by Maggie Fitzgibbon

Sara’S Garden

When Stu Krieger was a young boy, he knew that he wanted to be in the movie business. “My mom would tell the story of how I would take a photo out of the family photo album and write on the back, ‘Look, I’m the cute redhead in this photo, you should put me in your movies,’ and then I would ask her to send this to Walt Disney,” Krieger said with a laugh. “Oddly enough, I never heard back from Walt.” A family trip to California convinced Krieger that when he grew up he was going to move to that sunny state and venture into the entertainment industry. Krieger grew up in the eastside of Rochester where he attended Brighton Central Schools. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1969, and The College at Brockport in 1973. After college graduation, he packed up his car and moved to California. “I had a single focus from a very early age that I wanted to pursue this profession,” Krieger said. Upon arrival in California, Krieger knew he had to support himself. He sent applications to any business that was in any way related to the industry. He took a job as a copyboy for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner newspaper. “The job of a copyboy was to run errands for every newspaper department. But whenever I had time, I would hang around reporters who worked for the entertainment section to pick their brains and get their advice,” Krieger said. “The two best pieces of advice I got was this: to write all the time and to look for an agent.” This began Krieger’s quest to become a writer. He sent manuscripts and samples, and after almost

two years, he found an agent. The next several years brought new opportunities. He was signed by a producer to write a script for a movie called Goodbye Franklin High. This job led to work as a production assistant on another film where he met an actress who became his wife of over 37 years. Through his new wife, he met the renowned producer Garry Marshall. He co-wrote a script with Marshall that opened many doors for Krieger. “Working on that project with Garry got me a lot of attention which led to other breaks in the business. People started to take note of my work,” Krieger said. “The producers of the TV series called Amazing Stories, which included Steven Spielberg, read some of my work and asked me to write an episode for the show,” Krieger said. “That led to me working as a story editor for this series.” One of the biggest breaks in his career came when he was approached about collaborating with two of the most influential men in the film industry. “Spielberg contacted me about writing a script for an animated dinosaur film that he was set to produce with George Lucas. When Spielberg and Lucas ask if you want to write a movie for them, of course, you say yes. And so became the film “The Land Before Time,” Krieger said. “That was a life l o n g gift that premiered in 1998. The movie is still in sequel, and it also spun into a cartoon series.” This film led to work with the Disney Channel writing scripts for the movie of the month. He wrote 10 of the 50 best movies. While Krieger can certainly claim many successes in this film industry, his true reward came in the last 11 years when he became full-time professor of film and TV writing at the University of California at Riverside. This career change has led him to help mold future writers and producers. “This move to academia was a pivotal change in my life. My 90-year-old mentor is the person

Stu Krieger. Provided photo. I can credit for this change and motivation. He was the head of the department at the university and wanted to add a film and TV writing class,” Krieger said. “I teach my students the artistry of writing and to write from the heart and write what you know. We talk about reliability, integrity and work ethic. It’s tough to find work in this business, so you need to prove yourself. ” Like any writer, spending time honing the craft is part of fulfilling one’s creative self. Although he is a full-time professor, Krieger continues to write and has recently penned his first novel called, That One Cigarette. Krieger describes it as a counter factual history tale that follows four families who live in different locations from 1963 to 2009. The story begins with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and shows how this event impacted four families. One of the families depicted in the book lives in Rochester. The book includes many references to the area including Wegmans and the now closed Don and Bob’s Restaurant that was located on Monroe Avenue in Brighton.

Krieger describes the book as the story of life changes. “The genesis of the book began when three former students came to me seeking advice. Each one was turning 30 years old and felt they hadn’t made any significant achievements in their lives. They wanted to know what to do and I advised them to reconcile themselves and chart a course of change,” he said. Krieger has a long list of accomplishments including an Emmy Award for the mini-series A Year in the Life, a Lifetime Achievement Award in Screenwriting at the Riverside International Film Festival, and an honorary doctorate from The College at Brockport. While this list is full of accolades, Krieger is humble. “I grew up in a close family with parents who grounded me. Where and how I grew up were important influences. I think the book gives a sense of hope, change and optimism,” Krieger said. That One Cigarette can be ordered from Lift Bridge Book Shop, 45 Main Street, Brockport, 637-2260.
