St. Mary’s in Holley marks 150th anniversary with year-long celebration by Kristina Gabalski Parishioners at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Holley are celebrating a special milestone in their history this year. The parish is marking its 150th anniversary and a year-long celebration began August 15th - the Feast of the Assumption - which is the exact date the parish held its first Mass in Holley in 1865. “The year kicked-off with a procession through the village square and then a party,” says Emily Kwiatkowski,

pastoral assistant. The celebration will continue through August 14, 2016 with special events planned throughout the year. One of the major events - a wine tasting - is planned for Friday, November 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish Center. The cost is $15 and the event is for those 21 years of age and over. Mark Bower - whose family history goes back four generations to the very first parishioners - is chairman of the 150th Anniversary Steering Committee. “The wine tasting will feature Orleans, Monroe and Niagara County wineries

and breweries,” he says. “There will also be vendors and samplings of food, including appetizers both savory and sweet.” Tickets are available by calling Chris Wing at 638-6305 and Bower says he expects some tickets to be available the evening of the event. Bower says there is a very good group of parishioners planning the year ’s events and pastor, Fr. Mark Noonan, “is extremely excited and totally supportive of the church and parishioners celebrating this entire year.” In addition to special events, Kwiatkowski says the parish (which is merged with St. Mark’s in Kendall) has implemented a monthly speaker series which includes topics such as, “the origin of swear words and how they impact how we think and act and managing stress,” she says. On Monday, November 16, the topic will be Eucharistic Miracles presented by Dominic Salamida. The talk begins at 7 p.m. The December talk with be given by a teen and focus on, “overcoming adversity,” Kwiatkowski says. “We hope to have many middle and high school students at that.” Mark Bower notes the speaker series, “takes a look at the spiritual aspect of the150th anniversary.” Fr. Mark Noonan has written a brief history of the parish in which he explains the first St. Mary’s Church was a frame building on Canal St. (now East Avenue), constructed under the direction of pastor Fr. John Castaldi. The effort to construct the current Medina sandstone church on South Main Street began in 1898. The church was dedicated on Christ-

This photo was taken in the former St. Mary’s School, which closed in 1991. A reunion of students and staff is part of the year-long anniversary celebration. Then and now - This sketch of the first St. Mary’s Church and the current church is printed on anniversary souvenirs. mas Eve, 1905, during the pastorate of Fr. James McCarthy. The church was honored recently by being inducted into the Sandstone Hall of Fame on October 22 in Medina. “It stands as a perfect memorial to the skill, generosity and faith of the Italian quarrymen and stonecutters, as well as the spirit of cooperation which moved the whole parish to the completion of this glorious house of God which remains our spiritual home today,” Fr. Noonan writes in his history of the parish. The parish today is vibrant, both Bower and Kwiatkowski say with 550 active families who live in Holley and the surrounding communities including Brockport, Bergen, Clarendon and Kendall. In his history, Fr. Mark Noonan writes, “We can only hold the sweetness of God’s goodness and the love and faith of those who’ve gone before us in our hearts and rededicate ourselves to continuing the good work that began with a small group of 50 immigrants over 150 years ago.” Other events planned for the 150th anniversary year include a Mass which will honor local veterans on Sunday, November 8 followed by a breakfast. “It may be the start of something we do every so often,” Mark Bower says. December 6, the Genesee Chorale will perform at 3 p.m. and on April 23, 2016, an Anniversary Dinner and Dance for adults will be held at The Pillars in Albion. During the Holley JuneFest, held the first weekend in June, the first-ever St. Mary’s School reunion will be held. “The school would have been marking 65 years this year,” Bower says. The school - grades K-8 - closed in 1991. A special Mass will be held that weekend with a social to follow. “All former staff and students are invited to attend,” Bower says.

Candy Buy Back returns by Kristina Gabalski It’s a sweet deal: your children have a place to take their excess Halloween candy while supporting our servicemen and women overseas at the same time. It’s the annual candy buy back program at the office of Steven J. Thompson, D.D.S., located at 42 Public Square in the Village of Holley. This marks the ninth year of the successful program and Dr. Thompson says kids and adults are invited to come into the office the week after Halloween and drop off their excess Halloween candy which is then donated to Operation Gratitude. The program includes the treats in special care packages sent to U.S. troops serving overseas. According to the Operation Gratitude website (operationgratitude.com), the program works to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of active duty and veteran communities. “They do a nice job,” Dr. Thompson says of Operation Gratitude. He notes the program will have sent more than one million boxes - which are personally addressed to service persons - by Christmas this year (they are currently on the “March for a Second Million”). “It’s a great program,” Dr. Thompson continues. “The dental connection came in nine years ago, we are proud to be a part of that effort. It goes to a good cause. We like to support our troops any way we can.” The office has collected hundreds of pounds of candy over the years. Dr. Thompson observes that kids continue to bring in their extra candy, but, “... more and more adults also come in with their left over candy,” to contribute to the effort.

Dr. Steven J. Thompson invites kids and adults to drop off their excess Halloween candy during the week after Halloween Also being collected are toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss and other necessities including gloves, scarves and hats. Dr. Thompson adds that for soldiers deployed in Afghanistan, Beanie Babies are one of the most requested items. Why?, because, “They give them out to kids in the area as a good will measure,” he explains. “Kids are a means of information, such as where IEDs (improvised explosive devices) are located.” Adults are also welcome to donate to help with postage costs. There is a scale at Dr. Thompson’s office for weighing the candy, “We pay one dollar for each pound and we give away toothbrushes,” he says. The buy back time is extended this year to anytime during the week following Halloween. The office is open Monday through Thursday, November 2 through 5 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for candy drop-off.

SUNY Brockport students clean up Brockport’s Main St railroad bridge area The College at Brockport students support the plan for a Victorian mural to be displayed on Brockport’s Main Street railroad bridge. To underscore this interest, several students joined Walk Bike Brockport to clean up the tangle of weeds, small trees and debris on the right side of the bridge where automobiles, pedestrians and bikers pass beneath. Members of the College’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity (a fraternity devoted to community service) used tools and a heavy-duty truck provided by Harry Donahue, Superintendent

of Public Works, to remove the brush and stack it in the truck. Fraternity member Scott Meyers organized Pi Kappa Phi participation in the clean-up work. Meyers - a Department of Political Science and International Studies student - is an Intern with Walk Bike Brockport and the Mayor’s office. The new Victorian gateway will feature a mural, designed by Stacey Kirby, on both sides of the bridge. Provided information

I’m running for County Executive to ensure that every child, every family, and every business in our community has the opportunity to succeed and build a stronger future, together, right here in Monroe County. Since my announcement on January 24, 2015, I have attended over 600 events, logged nearly 7,500 miles on my 2008 family van and visited with businesses and thousands of residents throughout the City of Rochester and Monroe County.

It’s our County- our community- that brings us together. It’s where we work, raise our children, and pursue our dreams. As we look to building a stronger future for our community, I will lead a County government that keeps property taxes flat; protects and helps to create jobs through smart investments that enhance and encourage businesses of all sizes; and I will lead a County government that inspires confidence by working collaboratively, transparently and ethically.

As your County Clerk for over a decade, the County Clerk’s Office is more customer-oriented, convenient and efficient than ever before. Through hard work and innovation, I have returned over $30 million dollars to County taxpayers -- a record surplus – to help keep property taxes stable demonstrating that we can deliver positive results positioning our community for greater growth and opportunity.

As County Executive, I will focus on the needs of all of our families and taxpayers which starts with property taxes. I will not raise County property taxes - our families can’t afford it and our community shouldn’t tolerate it. I will work every day to control costs, embrace innovation, identify fraud, cut wasteful spending, and fight for the respect and fair share we deserve from our State and Federal partners.

The well-being of our families is tied to the well-being of their jobs. As a community, we need to focus on protecting our families’ jobs and attracting new jobs ensuring opportunities for all. Today there are a number of dedicated agencies and programs with the mission of helping to grow our economy. As County Executive, I will assemble a Job Creation Leadership Forum bringing together the heads of these agencies ensuring that our efforts complement each other and our common focus is always on creating and protecting jobs.

Our community deserves a County government that is the most ethical and transparent in the Nation.   As County Executive, I will implement a forward looking integrity agenda that will eliminate LDC’s, create an Office of Public Integrity, and post all County contracts online- an unprecedented level of transparency in County government. I have always fought for what is right and I’m proud that you have always stood with me. I would be honored to earn your continued support on Election Day.

Brighten spirits by becoming a DePaul Holiday Helper With the holiday season nearly upon us, DePaul, a not-for-profit community support organization based in Gates, seeks the community’s support for its annual Holiday Helpers Program. Individuals and service organizations can “adopt” clients from DePaul’s mental health residential programs who may not have family support. Participants can select from items on a wish list or choose to donate generic gifts such as hats, gloves, personal care items or socks. Past client wishes have included items as simple as a piece of chocolate cake, boots or basic clothing items. For nearly twenty years, generous

members of the community have made the season special for someone less fortunate by taking part in DePaul’s Holiday Helpers Program. DePaul serves some 5,000 people annually in programs that encompass mental health residential and treatment services, senior living residential services, addiction prevention and support programs, vocational programs and affordable housing. For more information about the Holiday Helpers Program, contact Amy Cavalier at 426-8000, ext. 3102 or at acavalier@ depaul.org. To make a tax-deductible monetary donation to the Holiday Helpers program, visit www.depaul.org. Provided information

Brockport mayor visits Barclay Elementary School Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman met with a group of second-graders at Barclay Elementary School on Oct. 21 to talk about the lawmaking process. Mayor Blackman shared with students some of the projects she is currently working on to improve the Village of Brockport. She told them what her job entails and explained the process she goes through when she wants to change a law. The students then asked questions regarding how laws are developed and approved.

The students have been learning about laws and local government and are currently working on a project to add/change a rule in the handbook. The project started with the question, “how do people persuade others to change rules or laws?” They are in the process of creating advertisements and writing persuasive arguments regarding their ideas, which range from adding more playground equipment to allowing personal electronic devices at school. Hilton School District seeking hosts for two Chinese language teachers Beginning in January 2016, the Hilton School District will participate in the Chinese Guest Teacher Program through the Confucius Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Two teachers will spend one year teaching Mandarin Chinese at Merton Williams Middle School and Hilton High School. Students will have the opportunity to take the .5 credit elective course during study hall time in the spring and fall semesters. Additional courses may be offered through Hilton Community Education. The district currently seeks hosts to provide housing, transportation and sightseeing opportunities for the two guest

teachers for the 2016 calendar year. Host families would need to provide a separate bedroom and bath, in-home laundry access and a kitchen facility. An in-law apartment situation works best. Transportation to and from school, shopping, etc. would also need to be provided if the housing is not located on a bus line. The Institute will pay a stipend each month to the host families. The district also seeks community mentors to show the guest teachers local sights. For information, contact Gloria Hoffer at 392-1000, ext. 3153 or email ghoffer@ hilton.k12.ny.us. Take the Community Free Library Survey The Community Free Library in Holley will conduct a survey via print and electronic sources to find out how to best communicate with individuals and families about library programs and services in their circulation area. “We plan many programs for children and adults. Some are well attended. Some are not. We want to use our tax dollars effectively by having programming people want to and will attend,” according to Barb Kerns, President of the Board of Trustees for the Library. “We also have many free services available to our community members we’d like to make sure they know about. To do this, we need to know the best ways to reach people.

“Make A Difference Day” in Hilton

Therefore, we have prepared this survey to see how people obtain information.” To encourage people to return the survey to the library, names of all people completing the survey will be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift card for Walmart. The survey will take place during the month of November, with a December deadline for returning the surveys to the library. The Suburban News has both the print version available as well as an electronic version. Those preferring to submit the electronic version may go to http://goo. gl/forms/T4uzUkbiyf Provided information

Local residents were very generous in donating food and supplies for the local food shelf during “Make A Difference Day.” Three of the Hilton Lions Club members who “packed the bus” include (left to right) Lions Joe Lee, Dave Tresohlavy and Murray Weaver.

Hilton students and community members Make a Difference for the eighth year The Hilton School District and several community agencies recently joined together to sponsor the Eighth Annual Make a Difference Day. The largest national day of helping others through volunteerism, Make a Difference Day is always held the fourth Saturday in October. Hilton students got involved in projects throughout the community, including: collecting electronics for recycling; sorting and collecting food for Hilton-Parma Food Shelf; visiting and doing activities with residents at Hilton East; making flowers for chemotherapy patients; collecting gently

used coats, hats and mittens; sponsoring a blood drive; doing fall cleanup at Mt. Carmel House; working in a community garden that supplies the food shelf with fresh produce; and cleaning up trails and planting a tree at Parma Town Park. Volunteers gathered in the cafeteria at Hilton High School both before and after volunteering where they enjoyed breakfast and lunch donated by the Latta Road Wegmans store. A video of this year’s Make a Difference Day projects will be posted at Hilton.k12. ny.us soon. Provided information

A FINAL GOODBYE As uncomfortable and as awkward as a visitor might feel when making a final visit to a dying loved one, the benefit derived from such heartfelt meetings quickly outweighs any uneasiness. Visitors should make it a point to sit at eye level, within touching reach, while taking their conversation cues from the dying person. Silence is fine, since the mere presence of a caring visitor is sometimes all that is needed. At the same time, visitors should not contradict the patient, who says that he or she is dying. Visitors should accept any emotion that may accompany the statement by empathizing and listening. Talking about unfinished business should be

seen as opportunities to express love or say goodbye. Nothing adequately prepares you for the initial shock of a loved one’s death. Feelings of panic and helplessness may be overwhelming, but it’s important to know you are not alone. It is important to reach out to close relatives, friends, and professionals for the help, support and comfort you need. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Opinion How do elected officials plan to manage the traffic problem in Sweden & Clarkson? As I was reading Paul Kimbell’s letter in the Clarkson Newsletter, I was thinking that once an individual becomes an elected official, his/her common sense goes out the window. I would like both the Sweden and Clarkson elected politicians to drive to Rochester via Sweden Walker Road North to Route 31 East between the hours of 7 and 8:30 a.m. and then drive back to the Brockport area via Route 31 West to Sweden Walker Road South between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. The morning commute on 31 East can be backed up to Sweden Walker Road (let’s not count how many accidents occur there) and the evening commute going from 31 West to Sweden Walker Road South can be backed up to East Avenue. Now our elected officials want to build apartments, senior housing and a gas

station on the southeast corner of Sweden Walker Road. They have told us that a traffic study has been conducted. I can’t understand why money needs to be spent on a traffic study when all you have to do is drive the route and you can see the highway cannot handle these projects. Have any of you driven Route 31 West from 531 to go shopping at Walmart and Wegmans between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. to see that it’s a frustrating experience? I am beginning to think you care nothing about the residents of our area and are seeing dollars signs instead. Karen Hobson Clarkson Note: The Clarkson Newsletter was delivered with Hamlin-Clarkson Herald newspapers the weekend of October 18, 2015.

Roast Pork loin, mashed potatoes, vegetable, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and dessert. Donations of non-perishable items are welcome for the Brockport Food Shelf.

The BUM Players of Brockport will present their annual murder-mystery audience-participatory, “whodunit” in conjunction with the Brockport Kiwanis. This event serves as a benefit for Kiwanis, with the proceeds put toward various children’s programs. As always, this is an original script written by director, actor and BUM Player founder, Gary “Turk” Thomas. Cast members include: David Hansen, Paul Kimball, Marcy Miceli, Charles Edwards, Kim Corcoran, Dave Odrzywolski, Steve Richardson and Carol Peterson. John “Mack” McCarthy will serve as Assistant Director. Entitled, “Lights! Action! Murder!,” the premise of this play revolves around the BUM Players themselves, although their character “names have been changed to protect the innocent.” As the group prepares to present its annual murder mystery, its leading lady is found murdered in a rather out-of-the-way location; in the bell tower of the Brockport United Methodist Church. The performance will take place on November 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sweden Senior Center, 133 State Street, Brockport. Tickets cost $10 or two for $19 and many be obtained by calling Wanda Miner at 637-5656 or at the State Farm Office of Kelly Lewis at 59 Main Street, Brockport. Provided information

Photographer Rick Nicholson caught this scene through his camera lens on a crystal clear and cool morning Columbus Day, October 12, as sportsmen were heading out to Lake Alice to see if the salmon had started to run. Waterport Reservoir (Lake Alice) is a 335-acre hydroelectric reservoir created by damming Oak Orchard Creek in Orleans County, Town of Carlton. The NYS Barge Canal is a major tributary and fisheries influence, according to the NYSDEC. Orleans County maintains a concrete boat launch with parking for eight cars/trailers on Oak Orchard River Road (NYS Route 279). Fishermen visit the popular area year ‘round.

opinion

Creation of village court came with costs While Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman launched criticism of the Town of Sweden Court (Suburban News West edition and Hamlin Clarkson Herald, October 18, 2015) let us look at the Village Court she has formed. In her wisdom, she decided that a community of 14,181 (population of the town and village) needed to fund five judges; four clerks, bailiffs, security staff and all the benefits and support costs that go along with that. The town is attempting to mitigate the costs of her duplication of services through eliminating one full-time court clerk and one judge. However, the town cannot eliminate all the extra costs associated with running two courts in one small community. Those extra costs are squarely on Mayor Blackman’s shoulders. The Town of Sweden judges, currently and in the recent past, have all held law degrees or long careers in law enforcement. The first two village judges nominated by Major Blackman had no legal training or careers in law enforcement. They came into office with no knowledge or any relevant experience. What they did have was political patronage - one is the son of Vice Mayor Bill

Andrews, another a former Village Trustee (who served alongside Mayor Blackman). Finally, the village’s preparation for opening a court was so shoddy that it was impossible for the town to tell when the village court was actually going to start - it was delayed a couple of times. The village actually approved paying then-trustee Carol Hannan’s partner $950 a month rent for a building to house the court, until the NYS Office of Court Administration said “no.” The village opened doors to their village hall court before renovations were complete - renovations that had to do with life safety. The village knowingly violated NYS Building and Fire Codes during the early months of its court - until the required second exit and other changes were made. Mayor Blackman may be just beginning to reap the consequences of the poor decision-making that led to the formation of a village court, hence her unwarranted and political attack on the Town Court.
