St. Mary’s in Holley marks 150th anniversary with year-long celebration by Kristina Gabalski Parishioners at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Holley are celebrating a special milestone in their history this year. The parish is marking its 150th anniversary and a year-long celebration began August 15th - the Feast of the Assumption - which is the exact date the parish held its first Mass in Holley in 1865. “The year kicked-off with a procession through the village square and then a party,” says Emily Kwiatkowski,

pastoral assistant. The celebration will continue through August 14, 2016 with special events planned throughout the year. One of the major events - a wine tasting - is planned for Friday, November 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish Center. The cost is $15 and the event is for those 21 years of age and over. Mark Bower - whose family history goes back four generations to the very first parishioners - is chairman of the 150th Anniversary Steering Committee. “The wine tasting will feature Orleans, Monroe and Niagara County wineries

and breweries,” he says. “There will also be vendors and samplings of food, including appetizers both savory and sweet.” Tickets are available by calling Chris Wing at 638-6305 and Bower says he expects some tickets to be available the evening of the event. Bower says there is a very good group of parishioners planning the year ’s events and pastor, Fr. Mark Noonan, “is extremely excited and totally supportive of the church and parishioners celebrating this entire year.” In addition to special events, Kwiatkowski says the parish (which is merged with St. Mark’s in Kendall) has implemented a monthly speaker series which includes topics such as, “the origin of swear words and how they impact how we think and act and managing stress,” she says. On Monday, November 16, the topic will be Eucharistic Miracles presented by Dominic Salamida. The talk begins at 7 p.m. The December talk with be given by a teen and focus on, “overcoming adversity,” Kwiatkowski says. “We hope to have many middle and high school students at that.” Mark Bower notes the speaker series, “takes a look at the spiritual aspect of the150th anniversary.” Fr. Mark Noonan has written a brief history of the parish in which he explains the first St. Mary’s Church was a frame building on Canal St. (now East Avenue), constructed under the direction of pastor Fr. John Castaldi. The effort to construct the current Medina sandstone church on South Main Street began in 1898. The church was dedicated on Christ-

School days - The celebration of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Holley includes photographs displayed in the Parish Center. This photo was taken in the former St. Mary’s School, which closed in 1991. A reunion of students and staff is part of the year-long anniversary celebration. The church was honored recently by being inducted into the Sandstone Hall of Fame on October 22 in Medina. “It stands as a perfect memorial to the skill, generosity and faith of the Italian quarrymen and stonecutters, as well as the spirit of cooperation which moved the whole parish to the completion of this glorious house of God which remains our spiritual home today,” Fr. Noonan writes in his history of the parish. The parish today is vibrant, both Bower and Kwiatkowski say with 550 active families who live in Holley and the surrounding communities including Brockport, Bergen, Clarendon and Kendall. In his history, Fr. Mark Noonan writes, “We can only hold the sweetness of God’s goodness and the love and faith of those who’ve gone before us in our hearts and rededicate ourselves to continuing the good work that began with a small group of 50 immigrants over 150 years ago.” Other events planned for the 150th anniversary year include a Mass which will honor local veterans on Sunday, November 8 followed by a breakfast. “It may be the start of something we do every so often,” Mark Bower says. December 6, the Genesee Chorale will perform at 3 p.m. and on April 23, 2016, an Anniversary Dinner and Dance for adults will be held at The Pillars in Albion. During the Holley JuneFest, held the first weekend in June, the first-ever St. Mary’s School reunion will be held. “The school would have been marking 65 years this year,” Bower says. The school - grades K-8 - closed in 1991. A special Mass will be held that weekend with a social to follow. “All former staff and students are invited to attend,” Bower says.

The Hilton School District and several community agencies recently joined together to sponsor the Eighth Annual Make a Difference Day. The largest national day of helping others through volunteerism, Make a Difference Day is always held the fourth Saturday in October. Hilton students got involved in projects throughout the community, including: collecting electronics for recycling; sorting and collecting food for Hilton-Parma Food Shelf; visiting and doing activities with residents at Hilton East; making flowers for chemotherapy patients; collecting gently

used coats, hats and mittens; sponsoring a blood drive; doing fall cleanup at Mt. Carmel House; working in a community garden that supplies the food shelf with fresh produce; and cleaning up trails and planting a tree at Parma Town Park. Volunteers gathered in the cafeteria at Hilton High School both before and after volunteering where they enjoyed breakfast and lunch donated by the Latta Road Wegmans store. SUNY Brockport students clean up Brockport’s Main Street railroad bridge area The College at Brockport students support the plan for a Victorian mural to be displayed on Brockport’s Main Street railroad bridge. To underscore this interest, several students joined Walk Bike Brockport to clean up the tangle of weeds, small trees and debris on the right side of the bridge where automobiles, pedestrians and bikers pass beneath. Members of the College’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity (a fraternity devoted to community service) used tools and a heavy-duty truck provided by Harry Donahue, Superintendent of Public Works, to remove the brush and stack it in the truck. Fraternity member Scott Meyers organized Pi Kappa Phi participation in the clean-up work. Meyers - a Department of Political Science and International Studies student - is an Intern with Walk Bike Brockport and the Mayor’s office. The new Victorian gateway will feature a mural, designed by Stacey Kirby, on both sides of the bridge. Provided information

BUM Players present A Murder Mystery within a Murder Mystery The BUM Players of Brockport will present their annual murder-mystery audience-participatory, “whodunit” in conjunction with the Brockport Kiwanis. This event serves as a benefit for Kiwanis, with the proceeds put toward various children’s programs. As always, this is an original script written by director, actor and BUM Player founder, Gary “Turk” Thomas. Cast members include: David Hansen, Paul Kimball, Marcy Miceli, Charles Edwards, Kim Corcoran, Dave Odrzywolski, Steve Richardson and Carol Peterson. John “Mack” McCarthy will serve as Assistant Director. Entitled, “Lights! Action! Murder!,” the premise of this play revolves around the BUM Players themselves,

although their character “names have been changed to protect the innocent.” As the group prepares to present its annual murder mystery, its leading lady is found murdered in a rather out-of-the-way location; in the bell tower of the Brockport United Methodist Church. The performance will take place on November 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sweden Senior Center, 133 State Street, Brockport. Tickets cost $10 or two for $19 and many be obtained by calling Wanda Miner at 637-5656 or at the State Farm Office of Kelly Lewis at 59 Main Street, Brockport. Provided information

A Message From Cheryl Dinolfo

I’m running for County Executive to ensure that every child, every family, and every business in our community has the opportunity to succeed and build a stronger future, together, right here in Monroe County. Since my announcement on January 24, 2015, I have attended over 600 events, logged nearly 7,500 miles on my 2008 family van and visited with businesses and thousands of residents throughout the City of Rochester and Monroe County.

It’s our County- our community- that brings us together. It’s where we work, raise our children, and pursue our dreams. As we look to building a stronger future for our community, I will lead a County government that keeps property taxes flat; protects and helps to create jobs through smart investments that enhance and encourage businesses of all sizes; and I will lead a County government that inspires confidence by working collaboratively, transparently and ethically.

As your County Clerk for over a decade, the County Clerk’s Office is more customer-oriented, convenient and efficient than ever before. Through hard work and innovation, I have returned over $30 million dollars to County taxpayers -- a record surplus – to help keep property taxes stable demonstrating that we can deliver positive results positioning our community for greater growth and opportunity.

As County Executive, I will focus on the needs of all of our families and taxpayers which starts with property taxes. I will not raise County property taxes - our families can’t afford it and our community shouldn’t tolerate it. I will work every day to control costs, embrace innovation, identify fraud, cut wasteful spending, and fight for the respect and fair share we deserve from our State and Federal partners.

The well-being of our families is tied to the well-being of their jobs. As a community, we need to focus on protecting our families’ jobs and attracting new jobs ensuring opportunities for all. Today there are a number of dedicated agencies and programs with the mission of helping to grow our economy. As County Executive, I will assemble a Job Creation Leadership Forum bringing together the heads of these agencies ensuring that our efforts complement each other and our common focus is always on creating and protecting jobs.

Our community deserves a County government that is the most ethical and transparent in the Nation.   As County Executive, I will implement a forward looking integrity agenda that will eliminate LDC’s, create an Office of Public Integrity, and post all County contracts online- an unprecedented level of transparency in County government. I have always fought for what is right and I’m proud that you have always stood with me. I would be honored to earn your continued support on Election Day. Paid for by Friends of Cheryl Dinolfo

Dr. Steven J. Thompson invites kids and adults to drop off their excess Halloween candy during the week after Halloween

TURKEYS OrDer NOW FOr ThANKsGIVING

Candy Buy Back returns by Kristina Gabalski It’s a sweet deal: your children have a place to take their excess Halloween candy while supporting our servicemen and women overseas at the same time. It’s the annual candy buy back program at the office of Steven J. Thompson, D.D.S., located at 42 Public Square in the Village of Holley. This marks the ninth year of the successful program and Dr. Thompson says kids and adults are invited to come into the office the week after Halloween and drop off their excess Halloween candy which is then donated to Operation Gratitude. The program includes the treats in special care packages sent to U.S. troops serving overseas. According to the Operation Gratitude website (operationgratitude.com), the program works to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of active duty and veteran communities. “They do a nice job,” Dr. Thompson says of Operation Gratitude. He notes the program will have sent more than one million boxes - which are personally addressed to service persons - by Christmas this year (they are currently on the “March for a Second Million”). “It’s a great program,” Dr. Thompson continues. “The dental connection came in nine years ago, we are proud

to be a part of that effort. It goes to a good cause. We like to support our troops any way we can.” The office has collected hundreds of pounds of candy over the years. Dr. Thompson observes that kids continue to bring in their extra candy, but, “... more and more adults also come in with their left over candy,” to contribute to the effort. Also being collected are toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss and other necessities including gloves, scarves and hats. Dr. Thompson adds that for soldiers deployed in Afghanistan, Beanie Babies are one of the most requested items. Why?, because, “They give them out to kids in the area as a good will measure,” he explains. “Kids are a means of information, such as where IEDs (improvised explosive devices) are located.” Adults are also welcome to donate to help with postage costs. There is a scale at Dr. Thompson’s office for weighing the candy, “We pay one dollar for each pound and we give away toothbrushes,” he says. The buy back time is extended this year to anytime during the week following Halloween. The office is open Monday through Thursday, November 2 through 5 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for candy drop-off.

Hilton School District seeking hosts for two Chinese language teachers Beginning in January 2016, the Hilton School District will participate in the Chinese Guest Teacher Program through the Confucius Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Two teachers will spend one year teaching Mandarin Chinese at Merton Williams Middle School and Hilton High School. Students will have the opportunity to take the .5 credit elective course during study hall time in the spring and fall semesters. Additional courses may be offered through Hilton Community Education. The district currently seeks hosts to provide housing, transportation and sightseeing opportunities for the two guest

teachers for the 2016 calendar year. Host families would need to provide a separate bedroom and bath, in-home laundry access and a kitchen facility. An in-law apartment situation works best. Transportation to and from school, shopping, etc. would also need to be provided if the housing is not located on a bus line. The Institute will pay a stipend each month to the host families. The district also seeks community mentors to show the guest teachers local sights. For information, contact Gloria Hoffer at 392-1000, ext. 3153 or email ghoffer@ hilton.k12.ny.us. Sweden to receive funding to continue tower restoration The Town of Sweden has been notified it will receive funding from The Rochester Area Community Foundation to continue the restoration of the Soldiers Memorial Tower on Owens Road in the Town of Sweden. Noted architect Clarence Birdsall designed the tower in 1894 as a memorial to Sweden’s fallen Civil War Soldiers. While popular as a tourist attraction in its early years, the tower had fallen into a state of disrepair so severe that there arose concern that it would completely collapse. In 2013, the Town of Sweden acquired the tower property and undertook a stabilization project. The town hired noted local mason Steve Monno who rebuilt a missing buttress; stabilized the foundation; leveled the jagged top of the tower (about 20% of the top had collapsed); and installed a copping stone cap to stop further water penetration and freeze/thaw damage into the tower. The stones that had fallen from the tower were washed and put on pallets for storage at the town’s highway garage for future restoration. A faux wrought iron fence was installed around the tower to deter vandalism. The highway crew keeps a path from the fire station to the tower site so that visitors may appreciate the historic structure.

The newly restored Soldiers Memorial Tower awaits further improvement upon funding. Provided photo. The newly announced funding from the Rochester Area Community Foundation will help the town pay for the repointing of all mortar joints. The repointing will help preserve the tower for many years to come and perhaps someday, the stones held in storage will be used to reconstruct the top of the tower. Provided information

New college and career center helps Byron-Bergen students explore options for their future

Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman made a special visit to a group of Barclay Elementary School second-graders to discuss the lawmaking system and how to apply it to the classroom. Provided photo

Brockport mayor visits Barclay Elementary School Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman met with a group of second-graders at Barclay Elementary School on Oct. 21 to talk about the lawmaking process. Mayor Blackman shared with students some of the projects she is currently working on to improve the Village of Brockport. She told them what her job entails and explained the process she goes through when she wants to change a law. The students then asked questions regarding how laws are developed and approved.

The students have been learning about laws and local government and are currently working on a project to add/change a rule in the handbook. The project started with the question, “how do people persuade others to change rules or laws?” They are in the process of creating advertisements and writing persuasive arguments regarding their ideas, which range from adding more playground equipment to allowing personal electronic devices at school. Scores of enthusiastic students filled the halls of Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School on October 13 for the school’s annual College Day. Hosted by the new College and Career Center, College Day featured the Rochester Area College Consortium and representatives from 12 local colleges and universities who were on hand to share information, answer questions, and provide direction.

Representatives from Genesee Community College and St. John Fisher College discuss their academic programs with Byron-Bergen students. Provided photo

“This is an opportunity for students to see that there is a wide world of options open to them when they leave high school,” said College and Career Counselor Robert Kaercher. “These colleges are right in our own backyard. They have excellent two- or four-year programs and a huge variety of majors for every interest.” The College and Career Center provides students with resources, tools, personalized attention, and expert advice to help them find the college or career path that is right for them. In addition to the College Day event, the Center arranges for many out-of-area colleges and universities to visit the campus, especially if students have a particular interest in their programs. The Rochester Area College Consortium’s 12 participating colleges: Alfred State, Alfred University, The College at Brockport, Finger Lakes Community College, Genesee Community College, Keuka College, Monroe Community College, Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher College, and the University of Rochester. about business a special feature of Westside News Inc. offered exclusively to advertisers.

Former Cupola building gets new life Once the Cupola and the Lakeside Nursing Home, 122 West Avenue is now home to Tender Loving Family Care. TLFC offers a multitude of programs for all ages within the community including Child and Adult Day care programs and Home Health care services. Built in the 1940s, the 24,000 square foot building has been vacant for almost 20 years. Now, TLFC occupies less than fifty percent of the space and sits next door to Strong West Emergency Department and medical offices. When TLFC first moved into its former office at 97 West Avenue, the staff believed they would have more than enough space but quickly realized that was not the case. With a workforce of over 100 employees,

everyone struggled in the small office across the street. This move however, has created an immediate need for twenty new positions. TLFC Child Care and Learning Center offers a new intergenerational program for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old that gives them the opportunity to spend supervised quality time with the adults in the Social Adult Day Program. The benefits of interaction between adults and children create an environment in which they can form relationships by learning and sharing together on a daily basis. TLFC offers a traditional Child Care and Adult Day Care program with many options and benefits for families in the community. Provided information

Ricci sends top-seed Blue Devils to finals by Warren Kozireski Senior Alex Ricci scored exactly two minutes into the first overtime to allow Brockport to escape with a 2-1 boys soccer victory over Spencerport in the Class A1 semi-finals held at LeBeau Filed in Hilton. The teams played scoreless through the first 40 minutes despite each threatening. Blue Devil Simeon Horton’s cross to Jason Hayes was headed just wide in the tenth minute and a shot from 30 yards out by Zachary Langelotti needed a diving saves by Rangers goalkeeper Connor MacKenzie to stay out of the net in the 34th minute. With the first half clock ticking off the final ten seconds of the half, a Spencerport corner kick by David DeBellis was headed by Nick Turnquist toward the goal, but dribbled along the goal line as the horn sounded. Ricci broke up the 0-0 duel just 1:04 into the second half as he picked up a loose ball at midfield, outraced the defender and put a bullet-shot from 30 yards out off the crossbar and into the net for a 1-0 Blue Devils lead. In the 59th minute, Brockport tried to pad their lead as Ricci fed a pass to Horton down the right wing, but MacKenzie came out of the net to challenge and made the save. Spencerport moved to a three-forward strategy late in an attempt to tie the game and had several chances. A pass

from DeBellis into the box was just out of the reach of Mike Caceci in the 64th minute before a shot by Evan Connoly that was ticketed for the upper corner was tipped wide by Brockport goalkeeper Joe McNulty. But with just 1:47 remaining in regulation, the Rangers finally converted. Joe Curtis passed to the scoring area where Caceci banged into the back of the net to tie the game and send it to overtime. “We stopped playing and tried to sit on our lead for 22 minutes,” Brockport head coach Chris Zorn said. “We mentally struggled in the second half and give Spencerport credit; they kept bringing the pressure, worked hard and kept at it.” Just two minutes into the sudden-victory overtime, Jonny Autenrieth headed the ball to Ricci, who headed it off the post and into the net for the game-winner. “We had to get back to laying our game in overtime,” Ricci said on the jubilant sideline. “We didn’t want to play two overtime (sessions), so we had to get the job done. “We’ve lost in the semi’s the last two years, so this is a good feeling. We put a good package together this year. Spencerport is a tough opponent and we were worried about their pressure, deadly throw-ins and long passes, but our D (defense) did a great job defending.”

Setter Jarod Barnard dished out 38 assists to lead Spencerport to a three-game sweep over Brockport in the final match of the regular season for both volleyball teams. The Rangers will enter the Section V playoffs seeded either first or second in Class BB and try to win their first crown since 2009. With a 6-5 lead in game one, Spencerport took control with an 11-3 run highlighted by a pair of kills by Zachary Baxter, an ace from Josh Rabidoux and a kill by Andrew Bertino. Trevor Lane had a kill and John Olmstead an ace to finish off the 25-12 win. The Rangers never trailed in game two, but saw a four point lead evaporate to an 18-18 tie as Brockport railed behind a block by Zach Sweet and kills by John Bamburoski

and Jake Vergari. But Bertino and Michael Dinh registered a kill and an ace on consecutive points to build the lead to 23-18 before Rabidoux finished the 25-21 win with a pair of kills on the final two points. Game three was tied 10-10 before the Rangers found their offensive rhythm with a 12-3 run as Rabidoux had three kills, one ace and one block in the stretch on their way to a 25-17 win to complete the sweep. Barnard added three kills to his 38 assists, Rabidoux had a game-high 17 kills with four aces, Bertino added 11 kills and eight digs and Lane had five kills with a pair of blocks for the Rangers. Bamburoski and Vergari each led Brockport with ten kills while the Blue Devils only senior, Shaye Bartnick, had ten digs with 21 assists. The Blue Devils expected to be a six or seven seed in the playoffs.
